take your bibles and turn to john's gospel as we conclude our series this morning entitled i declare and this morning we're going to come to the pinnacle of declarations as we see the declaration of jesus christ concerning himself and concerning his gospel and i'm excited about this message this morning and looking forward to the next series of messages beginning next week entitled overcomer and i want to encourage you uh first of all to be present but also if i've ever preached in my 35 years a series of messages that can help your friend or neighbor it's going to be this series this is the one you want to invite a friend to come and hear because every sunday morning they're going to hear about the power of christ to help them overcome the various trials and difficulties of our lives and boy when you study the new testament and the old testament characters you'll find that there were every challenge there was every kind of a challenge in the biblical days that we face today and whether that was the challenge of not knowing what to do next uh whether that was the challenge of of discrimination as with moses and jochebed whether that was the challenge of of family turmoil as it was with joseph and on and on and on you go through the bible stories and god gives the answers and so we're going to be looking at these beginning next sunday next sunday morning i'll introduce the series from the new testament and then we'll be moving along from there but this morning john chapter 3 a very familiar passage to most of us and i want you to follow with me i'm going to read the first 17 verses just so that we all can kind of get the context together great great passage let's read it follow with me as i read beginning in verse 1. there was a man of the pharisees named nicodemus a ruler of the jews the same came to jesus by night and said unto him rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from god for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except god be with him jesus answered and said unto him verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of god nicodemus saith unto him how can a man be born when he is old can he enter the second time into his mother's womb and be born jesus answered verily verily i say unto thee except a man be born of water and of the spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of god that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit marvel not that i said unto thee ye must be born again the wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but cants not tell whence it cometh and whether it goeth so is everyone that is born of the spirit nicodemus answered and said unto him how can these things be jesus answered and said unto him art thou a master of israel and knoweth not these things verily verily i say unto thee we speak that we do know and testify that we have seen and you receive not our witness if i have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall ye believe if i tell you of heavenly things and no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven and as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life for god sent not his son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved let us pray father bless the reading and the preaching of your word this morning may we never get over the wonder the fact that you came down to us to provide for our salvation and father if there's one here without that salvation this morning may they open their heart and receive christ today is my prayer in jesus name i pray amen you may be seated have you ever noticed there's something about human nature that causes us to resent being told what to do have you ever noticed that i mean it might be an usher asking you to scoot in uh-oh it might be your parent asking you or telling you to do your homework it might be your boss at work saying we need to do this this way and you'd rather do it another way there's just something about our human nature that kind of wants to push back we don't necessarily want to be told what to do or how to do it all the time it's like a little boy who was told in sunday school you need to sit down johnny it's time for you to sit down and so finally he sat down and he said to his teacher i may be sitting down on the outside but on the inside i'm standing up and sometimes that's how we go through life you know we just have that that tendency to want to do things our way well in the bible this morning there is a decision deemed so wonderful and so necessary by jesus christ that he says to us today you must do this this is not an option if you want to see heaven this is not a suggestion this is not just a conversation but this is a mandate for anyone who expects to be in heaven someday today we see the declaration of jesus christ regarding salvation when he simply says these magnificent words ye must be born again let's say that together ye must last week we had a guest and as i met him in my office the first question i asked him was have you ever received jesus christ as your personal savior and the answer was something like i hear from time to time well i've always had that or i've always believed that but the truth is that no one has always been saved the truth is that if someone is saved there is a moment in time just like they have a physical birthday they're going to have a spiritual birthday when they are born again and it is vital that we as soul winners and witnesses for christ understand the difference between religiosity and and knowing about god or having been raised in a christian family and actually having received jesus christ as our savior jesus said there must be this matter of being born again as a record in your life this morning i speak to you about this declaration of jesus this declaration of his gospel and i want you to notice in the first place this morning the priority of the new birth the priority that he places upon this why would jesus say to a religious man you must be born again nicodemus had memorized more verses than perhaps any one of us in this room this morning he understood the law he understood the old testament history he had a zealousness for the jewish religion and yet we see in verse number six a very pivotal truth the bible says that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the spirit is spirit you see jesus is introducing to these who had lived in the old testament economy that there is now available to them a spiritual birth whereby when they receive christ as savior the spirit of the living god would take up residence in their life you see the the rebirth is regeneration it is new birth from the inside out and in fact when someone receives jesus as their savior the spirit of the living god takes up residence in their life romans chapter 8 in verse 9 says that if we have not the spirit of god we are none of his it is to be said that the holy spirit indwells the believer at the moment of salvation ephesians 1 and 13 says it this way in whom he also trusted speaking of jesus after that he heard the word of truth the gospel of your salvation in whom also after that you believed you were sealed with that holy spirit of promise it is actually not only the holy spirit that indwells us it is the holy spirit that seals that decision so that we will never lose our salvation that's the sealing ministry of the holy spirit of god how many of you are thankful for his presence in your life today he indwells he seals yes he has ministries such as comforting and guiding illuminating but he indwells the believer and so jesus places the priority on the new birth because we must have his salvation his new birth the presence of his holy spirit if we will ever have hope of heaven now there are some specific reasons why a man must be born again i want you to think of them with me today we must be born again first of all because of our sin nature that which is born of the flesh is born of the adamic sin nature and because of that that nature must be redeemed by the blood of jesus christ now in your note says romans 5 12 notice what it says wherefore as by one man's sin entered into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned now understand this morning that we are not merely sinners because we commit sin we are sinners because we are born as sinners the bible says that because of adam's sin that death passed upon all men that we are spiritually dead though we are physically alive we are spiritually dead and it is only by the second birth by being born again that we come to life spiritually all have sinned and come short of the glory of god and by the way if you don't believe what i'm preaching right now let me encourage you just to visit the nursery sometime just walk across the hallways and just look in the nursery and these little angels come in and they're cleaned up they look so beautiful and and they're doing great until two of them want the same toy and then it's world war three over there and they begin to fight and tussle and nobody teaches them how to do that it's a part of their nature they understand and we understand that that sin is a part of the human nature and so because of our sin we need a new birth we need the presence of god and the forgiveness of god and that leads us secondly to this thought not only because of our sin but because of god's righteousness now god is righteous therefore he requires a payment for sin god's perfect son came to make that payment and when we are born spiritually his blood covers our sin and his spirit creates within us a new nature we are forgiven and god's righteousness is met through jesus christ now i want you to think about the verses that i've placed in your notes this morning and just look at them with me if you would to see not only how we are forgiven but also how that christ's blood meets god's righteous demand notice if you would romans 3 24 what it says being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in christ jesus now we know the word justified sometimes as divine just as if i had never sinned we are justified by his grace and we are justified not by the church but we are justified by jesus christ everybody with me so far all right verse 24 what a wonderful verse verse 25 speaking of jesus whom god hath set forth why do we make so much of jesus why do we not emphasize seven sacraments for salvation why do we not emphasize baptism for salvation why do we not emphasize church membership for salvation because the bible emphasizes the finished work of jesus and it tells us that god set him forth you see if god set forth jesus to provide the payment for sin then our responsibility is to preach jesus christ here in the antelope valley so god have set forth christ to be a propitiation now i love that word this is a word that makes me glad that i'm preaching this morning from the king james bible i don't know what it said in other translations but i love this word even the fact that you might have to look it up in a dictionary i love that fact because this word has such depth this word alone is a beautiful word it means the covering or it means the mercy seat and it reminds us that in the old testament the priest would sprinkle blood on the mercy seat on the day of atonement for the covering of the sins of israel but what the word propitiation tells me is that god set forth jesus to be my mercy seat he alone now can provide the covering for the sin not only of israel but of all who believe so the word propitiation reminds us that jesus becomes the covering and by the way as sinners we need a covering and thank god for that covering so it says god has set forth jesus to be a propitiation through faith in his blood and always remember that without the shedding of the blood there's no remission of sin and then it says this to declare and this is what i want you to see his righteousness for the remission of sins that are passed through the forbearance of god notice verse 26 to declare i say at this time his righteousness that he might be just and the justifier of him which believeth in jesus i can still remember my granddad driving me and his ford f-150 truck all around the farm and we would do do some chores and go out and spray some weeds or fix a tractor or whatever he had to do that day but what he really wanted to do ever since he was saved in his early 40s was to talk about the grace of god and he would oftentimes come to this passage and though he had never received more than an eighth grade education he had memorized the entire book of romans and he would often quote this passage to me and he would say paul god is a just god and a just god cannot allow sinners into heaven but because jesus shed his blood god in his justice can allow us entrance into heaven he would explain to me that at this time his righteousness has been satisfied when was it satisfied grandad it was satisfied at the cross of calvary not only are we declared righteous but god is righteous in letting the sinner off because of what jesus christ has done and oh what a great truth that is this morning that he is a righteous god and the righteous demand of god was met at the cross of calvary you see sin had a wage attached there was a payment that had to have been made the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life through jesus christ our lord when you have a sin debt to pay it's a terrible thing i remember several years ago we were driving down to the ontario airport and i was late for the plane terry was with me and while i was coming down that 138 kind of going down towards interstate 15 you're kind of on a downhill how many of you know where i'm talking about right and when you're downhill and your car's a little heavy and you're maybe running a little behind sometimes you can lose track of how fast you're going how many of you are with me on that help me out here just a little bit right i wasn't speeding i was just going quickly down a hill i was just floating down the hill there and uh boy all of a sudden that that policeman behind us boy he lit up those lights and he came up and he said i want to see your id and he was in a bad mood that morning i tried to be as friendly as i could be and tried to have a little small talk you know and share a few things with him he wanted none of it and uh and and he wrote me that speeding ticket and terry was sitting in the passenger seat smiling about it she thought that was funny ladies and gentlemen pray for terry to have more grace upon her fallen husband and i'm telling you what i was going a lot faster than i realized and that was a that was a heavy payment that i had to make the wages of sin there's a price to be paid and yet we see that that price for sin was paid ultimately by jesus christ and when he did that he not only he not only met the righteous demand of god the father but he allows us then to enter into his righteousness that we might experience the new birth the priority of the new birth is based upon the fact that all of us fall short of god's glory and that only christ met the righteous demand of god the father this is why we place such a priority on the phrase you must be born again but notice secondly the preeminence of the son of god the preeminence of the son of god and we're just surveying a little bit this morning chapter 3 allow me to bring you to verse 13 if i may notice what it says and no man hath ascended up into heaven but that he came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven now why should we consider the declaration of christ this morning why should someone that you know who has no religion or some religion why should they consider the declaration of jesus christ and not muhammad or not buddha or not some some other person why would they accept the declaration of christ and i say to you this morning it is because jesus christ is the preeminent one now notice first of all his eternality the eternality of jesus christ verse 13 explains it it says it this way and no man hath to send it up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven here we begin to understand the nature of our savior that jesus as god is pre-existent he was pre-existent with god the father that jesus came down from heaven indicates he pre-existed his conception and his birth by the way conception is the beginning of life even if president biden denied that this week in the news according to the word of god the bible says that mary was great with child and we as bible believers believe that human life begins at conception but jesus christ was eternally pre-existent before his conception and his birth and the fact is that he came down from heaven he was conceived of the holy ghost now we know the jehovah witness and other cults teach that jesus began his existence in bethlehem but the bible teaches that he was existent before he came in the form of a man in bethlehem's manger now some of this is review for some of us but the the centrality of the deity of christ to our faith is something that we must understand and be prepared to give an answer to others about so let's just look at a few quick verses to help us understand the eternality of our god the one who came down from heaven john 1 1 in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god this word word speaks of the eternal nature of jesus christ himself he was in the beginning the same was in the beginning with god and all things were made by him and without him was not anything made that was made john 1 14 very familiar and the word that we read about just a moment ago the word jesus was made flesh so this eternal one jesus christ the one who existed in in eternal times with god the father then when he came to this earth and was conceived of the holy ghost and born of the of the virgin mary then the word became flesh he did not begin to exist there for he had eternally existed but now he took the form of of a human he became the god man and so the bible says the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory as of the only begotten of the father micah prophesied this notice micah 5 2 but thou bethlehem ephrata though thou be little among the thousands of judah yet out of thee shall come forth unto me a ruler in israel whose goings forth have been from old from everlasting you see jesus is sometimes referred to as the ancient of days in fact he said in john 8 and 58 verily verily i say unto you before abraham was i am he is the i am that i am he is the eternally pre-existent one and so jesus came down from heaven showing us his eternality and then he is ascended back to heaven now surely he is at the right hand of god the father but can i blow your mind with something this morning catch this now even as he spoke to nicodemus he was at the right hand of the father did you see that in the text this morning notice that if you would in verse 13. pretty amazing and no man have to send it up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the son of man which is in heaven say that say that with me would you please which is in heaven the son of man which is in heaven i like how gabelline expressed this in his commentary he said the expression which is in heaven is one of those many expressions in the new testament which can be explained in no other way than by the deity of christ it would be utterly absurd and untrue to say of any mere man that it at the very time he was speaking on earth he was in heaven but it can be said of christ with perfect truth and propriety he never ceased to be very god when he became incarnate he was with god and he was god as god he was in heaven while he spoke to nicodemus what an amazing thought and you see this tells us about another attribute of the deity of christ not only is he eternal he is omnipresent and by the way if he could not be on earth as he was with the father in heaven then we could not worship him in california while our brothers worship him in new york or in london or in manila or wherever they worship him ladies and gentlemen we serve an omnipresent christ this morning and as he spoke to nicodemus on this earth he was also with his father this phrase indicates to us that he was present in heaven at that same moment and so why does jesus say you must be born again someone says why do i have to listen to him and not some other because only jesus is eternal god only jesus is on the present god only jesus is pre-existent in this way and so we see his eternality and that is why we see secondly his exaltation the exaltation of jesus christ so notice this in verse 14 it says and as moses lifted up the servant serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up that whosoever believed in him should not perish but have eternal life now here we see and we're reminded of an old testament story the commandment of moses how that around 1445 bc the children of israel were in the wanderings in the wilderness and uh they were moving from mount sinai toward a place called kadesh barnia and as they were along this journey the bible tells us something that took place in their life and i want you to see it if it's in your notes it's numbers 21 verse 7 and i want you to notice it says therefore the people came to moses and said we have sinned for we have spoken against the lord and against thee pray unto the lord that he take away the serpents from us and moses prayed for the people some of you will recall the story they're journeying they had been grumbling they had been speaking against the man of god they had been speaking against god bringing them to this place and suddenly they were surrounded by serpents and the serpents were biting them and people were becoming sick and dying it was a horrific day in the life of the children of israel and they came to moses and moses prayed for the people verse 8 and the lord said unto moses make thee a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole and it shall come to pass that everyone that is bitten when he looketh upon it shall live and moses made a serpent of brass and put it upon a pole and it came to pass that if any if a serpent had had bitten any man that when he beheld the serpent of brass he lived and so it is in the book of numbers we read about this tragic day in the lives of the children of israel and we read that moses was instructed by god to create a pole to have a fiery serpent of brass on the pole the people if they would simply look to that serpent that had been elevated if they would just simply look to that serpent they would live according to the promise of god they would be spared from the bites they would be spared from the poison and the brazen serpent represents the cause of death uh yet as it is lifted up on the pole it now represents life to all who would believe and so the command of moses was moses lift up a brazen serpent onto the pole and whoever will look will live and now look at the verse before us here in john chapter 3 and verse number 14. and as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up ladies and gentlemen our declaration is not about our church it is not about our tradition it's not about the sacraments it's not about the vatican it's not about salt lake city it's not about man's tradition we exist as a church to lift up jesus christ the preeminent son of god and even as moses lifted up the serpent our responsibility is to talk about jesus to lift up jesus to point people to jesus christ notice verse 14 the bible says and as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up jesus then became the substitute for every sinner when he was lifted up on the cross for all of us who were bitten by sin for all of us who were poisoned by the adamic nature jesus christ was lifted up on the cross of calvary and there he suffered and died for our sin notice in your notes john 12 27 now is my soul troubled and what shall i say father save me from this hour but for this cause came i into this hour and i this is jesus speaking if i be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me this he said signifying what death he should die father if it be possible let this cup pass for me nevertheless not my will but thine be done and father i realize that if if i be lifted up from this earth then then all men will be drawn unto me this is the preeminence of christ this is the opportunity and privilege of the church and so jesus was suspended between heaven and earth as a satisfactory payment for our sin the substitutionary sacrifice for the sin of the entire world and just like the israelites looked up and saw the serpent and they lived in the day of moses so men and women who look up from their religion from their atheism from whatever else they're believing and they turn to jesus christ and see him as the son of god see him as the substitutionary payment for their sin they will live for all of eternity for he god the father hath made him god the son to be sin for us who knew no sin jesus knew none that we might be made the righteousness of god in him and so this morning we see the priority of the new birth you must be born again and it is based upon the preeminence of jesus christ who is eternal and who is omnipresent and who as god went to the cross and was lifted up so that men and women and boys and girls could look to him and be saved we see the priority of the new birth we see the preeminence of the son of god but notice finally this morning the provision of eternal salvation so what does all of this death on the cross provide this resurrection from the dead well notice in verse 15 the bible says these words that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life even as moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the son of man be lifted up why that whosoever believeth in him should not perish you know religion messes a lot of great things up doesn't it religion overcomplicates the simplicity of the gospel i believe in education i believe in getting as much education as we possibly can get but let's never get so educated that we forget the simplicity of john 3 15 and 16. because the bible is very clear that whosoever believeth verse 15 in him should not perish but have everlasting life we see here the declaration of eternal life this is the first of two times that jesus says whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life listen when god puts something twice like this in a row in his word he's emphasizing for us there is no other way in fact the bible says there's none other name given under heaven given amongst men whereby you must be saved it is truly all about the lord jesus christ and we see here a declaration of eternal life but notice secondly the delivery of eternal life we come now to a verse that we could perhaps preach for weeks from this one verse but let's read it and let's read it together shall we verse 16 ready begin for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life john 3 16 addresses many of the isms in our world today the phrase for god responds to atheism which claims there is no god the phrase so loved responds to fatalism which asserts that god is just an impersonal force in the world the phrase the world responds to nationalism which falsely asserts that god only loves a particular people group the phrase that he gave responds to materialism and teaches us that it is more blessed to give than to receive the phrase his only begotten son responds to which says that god has no son john 3 16 is the answer for the world's needs it is the refutation for the world's false teachings it addresses the isms in the world today and some refer to this as the greatest verse in all of the bible and i want you to think about it in this one verse we see the greatest love the world has ever known for god so loved the world his love is not like a trickling faucet it is like a bottomless ocean the love of god is everlasting and god is the principal mover in our own salvation his love being the first love first john 4 9 and this was manifested the love of god toward us because that he sent his only begotten son into the world that we might live through him here in his love not that we loved god but that he loved us and sent his son to be a propitiation for our sin this world knows so little of love i get tickled i laugh at people sometimes they say love wins and they're talking about lust they're not talking about love they know nothing of the love of god my friend the fact is that the love of god is the greatest love the world has ever known i heard of a story of a of a gal that wrote her former boyfriend a letter she said dear johnny no words could express my love for you or the unhappiness that i have felt since i broke off our engagement please say you'll take me back i love you i love you i love you love always jane p.s congratulations on winning the lottery that's the world's love the world's love says what do i get out of it god said i'm going to provide something by grace i'm going to give you the greatest love but i see not only the greatest love i see the greatest gift for god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son jesus came willingly as the substitute for our sin john 10 and 11 says i am the good shepherd the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep no one took jesus life jesus gave his life on the cross of calvary and no matter what your question or your need the cross is god's last argument people say well i don't think god should do this i don't think god should do that friend he gave his only begotten son for the sins of this world it is the greatest love it is the greatest gift and then we see thirdly the greatest invitation for god so loved the world that whosoever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life oh god loves each one augustine said he loves each one of us as if there was only one of us has it occurred to you friend that god is no respecter of persons do you understand that god is in the business of saving souls and sometimes that may be a criminal a child it may be someone in prison it may be someone that seems very successful in this life romans 2 11 god is no respecter of persons for as many as have sinned without the law shall also perish without the law and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law you see god is wanting us to know that whoever wants to be saved can be saved first john two and two and he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world what does this tell us it tells us that there's no one on this planet who cannot come and look to the cross and be saved that whosoever will may come that there was blood shed enough on the cross of calvary to cover the sins of the whole world second peter 3 and 9 the lord is not slack concerning his promise and some men count slackness but is long-suffering to us word not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance does everyone repent no but is god desirous of them to come does he love the world did he shed his blood for their sin yes for whosoever shall call upon the name of the lord shall be saved it doesn't matter their background it doesn't matter what their a cultural background and i'm telling you we live in a race-baiting world and a divisive world where people want to separate men from women and they want to somehow have just one unisex movement and they want to cause division between all of the different races of the world i'm going to tell you something there is one race it's the human race it's a fallen race and god says to every member of the human race if you look to my son you can be saved and that's why there's unity in god's house this morning at lancaster baptist church because we're not here identifying around a particular culture we're here identifying around a cross and it is the cross of jesus christ because whosoever will call upon the name of the lord shall be saved my number one question and concern for everyone that i meet is not first and foremost where are you from what's your cultural background what's your favorite food what's your national costume none of that is as important as do you know jesus christ as your savior because whoever believes can be saved here we see the greatest love known in the world the greatest gift ever given to the world the greatest invitation ever made to the world and the greatest provision ever provided that is eternal life whosoever believeth shall not perish but have everlasting life you see the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life through jesus christ our lord during world war ii there were a number of soldiers that had been assigned a new chaplain this chaplain rolled in and some of the soldiers came to see him they'd been fighting some heavy heavy duty in in in japan and uh actually in the philippine islands and they came to the chaplain they said we have a question for you they said do you believe in a literal hell and by the way how many of you know that not everything called church holds to the doctrines i'm preaching right now and how many of you understand that oftentimes people shift over the course of their lifetime in their beliefs and these men wanted to know they said they said sir do you believe in a literal hell and the chaplain said well no i i really don't he said i think it's just kind of maybe a you know a darkness or something or an eternity that but he said i don't believe in a literal hell one of the soldiers spoke for the group he said then if there is no hell we don't need you and he says if there is a hell we don't want you to lead us astray friend it is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgment every man whose name was not written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire god is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance why must we go out this week and share the good news because there is a hell but there is a heaven the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life and just like the children of israel looked up to the serpent and were saved and the word of god says that if we'll look to christ we can be saved and our responsibility is just to point people to jesus and point people to jesus well i don't really always know what to say just point them in the right direction just get them to the right connection group get them to the right church service just just give them a gospel tract just tell them how you got saved you may not feel like you're an expert but just keep pointing them to the preeminent son of god the priority of the new birth is clearly seen you must be born again the preeminence of the son of god is irrefutable just consider the empty tomb and the provision of eternal salvation that is made possible only by john 15 and 16 according to the word of god by jesus christ he made himself of no reputation he took upon him the form of a servant he humbled himself to the obedience of the cross and he did it all for you and for me
