[Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] all right now friends before we start on this maple and we'll talk about the maple here in just a second I need to finish up this white oak I was hoping to get a nice 6x6 post out of this with the heart right in the center but right there's our problem on the top as you can see got a lot of rot right in there there's a lot of issues that's pretty punchy that's soft and it goes in you know gosh some of it goes down to here so this is not a good candidate for a post so what I'm going to do is is make a 3x5 out of it just like that one over there and that's going to be made into braces for the drying shed so we'll probably get two braces out of this we'll saw these out real fast and then we'll go ahead and put the maple up here and start on end [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] alright guys we got a good one on the sawmill today I'm not had a good one like this in a long time one that kind of keeps you up at night you know you think about logs like this and you really get excited about sawmill and when you look just something like this or at least I do and if you're not you're not signed up good stuff like this so go the log yard and get something nice so this right here is a soft maple and if we're lucky today and follow the signs are right that I'm seeing on the bark this should be some really nice curly maple inside this timber let's go over the measurements real fast this log is nine feet long so this is the operators side and the dam that are down here at the widest point is about 27 inches and that's the way we're gonna saw it today I've got it turned and its widest point going up and down it's about 18 inches so I got it turned so we'll get the widest boards possible out of this timber and here on the other end the dam there looks like 25 inches are not free it's like I was saying this is soft maple nine feet loaned a really good-sized log right here should get some really nice slabs out of it we saw these at nine quarters like the way all these dude if you're new to this channel that's two and a quarter inches in thickness including the curve right there the turf is actually set on the sawmill already it kind of configures the kerf in your cut and the turf is the amount of material that the blade removes and I need to do a honey-do video on that one day about the kerf and how you program that sawmill head right there we'll do that soon guys I need to do that what we're probably gonna do is come down to make your first cut on the top and take off a very small amount of material right here I want to do the most I can out of this log right here so what we're doing live aged slabs full width as we can get so we'll come down and just barely skim off the top of this barge and take a really light cut we'll flip it over 180 through the Accu say therefore nine quarter and start working our way down after we live with the pits we get that pit level also or we'll do the best we can because we have a crotch on this end and it's really hard to level a pith when you have a crotch on one end of a log you know you can get it sometimes around the money but sometimes not so much so you may be wondering why is this loud going to be curly how do you know that and what causes it I'm gonna try to explain that rule briefly here and I hope it makes sense to you so when the tree groves obviously it grows up and down that's obvious right there and curl de Valence whenever the tree has a little bit of tension and compression and I have no idea what causes that I'm sure a forester will maybe a pipe in in the comments and let us know but what happens is the tree gets compressed when it's growing and it's just like taking a towel and twisting it and it gets wrinkled up and it causes that grain to wrinkle because of the compression that's going around it's not growing up it's going around the Lord and that compression is what causes the wrinkles and what's causes it to be curly and there's a lot of signs on this bark right here that tell me it's probably going to be curly now how far down it goes inside the tree we won't know until we get into it here but there's a lot of signs right here that we're going to have some nice curly slabs right here and I will bring the camera in and show you guys what I'm talking about and when you look for laws that are curly I think about any kind of tree can have some curl to it but I think maple is the most dominant species for having the most curl and I could be wrong about that but I'm pretty sure I'm right but if I'm not right somebody will correct me down below because maples real famous for its curly wood and a lot of instrument makers look for this stuff and high in furniture guys because it's hard to find I've never had a true curly maple and what do I mean by true curly maple I mean a maple slab or board those curl just everywhere on it I've gotten lucky a few times and had a little bit of curl on different spots of the wood but never throughout the whole timber to where you look at it and that's the first thing you see is just the curls going everywhere so hopefully that'll be the first time today guys but on this bark here you're buying timber you know like I do here at this meal I bought this slog about a week ago you can peel the bark back on maple and sometimes the machines will do that for you you know the log loaders will grab these things and some of the bark will come off just naturally let me bring the cambrian guys and show you all these little ripples in here you can feel them you can put your fingers on here you can feel these little ripples in the bark truly interesting here to see something like this with this much curl it's just going on everywhere on this log it's at the bottom at the top all around if there's just signs of curl everywhere so hopefully this is going to be a really good day guys throughout friends right here on top of the log I'm not going to show you every single one of them but right here is what I'm talking about the bark has been peeled back right there and look at those you can see those ridges right there 99% of the time that's a sign of curl and timber right there and you can feel those little ridges coming up and they're all over this timber guys right here above it you see those striations running right there across it right here on the top you can see them as well so look for that guys when you're buying timber especially with maple and you might get a maple that's gonna be better than the rest if it's got some curl in it because that makes it a lot more valuable it's all over it guys all over it look around here I'm tilt the camera you see them right there all over this thing guys hopefully this first cut will reveal some curl right in here let's see what happens let's get the wood-mizer go [Applause] [Music] alright friends let's take a look at this slab this st. is heavy guys let me tell you this is really really dense wood it's really green heavy stuff right here I'm not looking forward to stacking this later so this slab here we're looking at about 22 inches wide half way up up here toward the top it's about 25 inches and it looks like about 22 from the whole way down and there's a lot of stuff going on here you really got to be here in person to really appreciate these curls on here it's kind of hard to tell through the video footage I'm assuming on what's going on will knock the dust off of it and throw some water on it anyway and see how it looks we got some really nice color coming right here through the middle and this slab is free of heart right here there's no heartwood in it and up here toward the top let me move the camera so right here toward the top this is actually the operators side I had to swing this thing around to pull it off the meal cut dropping it right here we have some crotch wood going on where it flared out at the top some nice color in here and a lot of curl coming up through here guys a lot of curl going on so this is really good this is what I was looking for we're go ahead knock the dust off of this throw some water on it see how loose [Music] right now free from the rain a little bit harder here so I apologize for screaming at you this will probably be the last slabs we look at today it's about five o'clock it close to dinnertime and we'll come out here tomorrow finish up this timber this one's pretty interesting here to finish the video off with this slab does not have the heart in it although you can start seeing the heart form right here in the middle the neck slab will have the pimp right down the middle of it but this one's going to be pretty interesting because you have that heartwood coming up right in the center and it's a darker color than the outside here with the natural color you see in Maple so let's go ahead and knock the dust off this I want to throw some water on it call this day I got to stack these up also once I'm done recording these things are heavy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
