hi i'm alex archbull and i've been buying and selling antiques since i was nine years old from basements to scrap yards i'll look just about anywhere i can to find lost antiques and collectibles and sometimes i'll go big and buy everything with my wife and kids we run an antique shop in edmonton alberta canada filled with some of the most unique items we can find i never know what's going to happen or who i'm going to meet this is our life this is our adventure and this is curiosity from home honey [Music] hey guys and welcome to today's episode last night my security system went off and no it wasn't anybody breaking in we had some strange flashing lights that were occurring all around my building and i think what it was was a construction crew coming to do a little bit of work in the backyard if that's the case i really don't know what i'm pulling up to this morning did they finish will i have a big hole will there be a mountain of dirt will they uncover a roman horde of coins who knows i'm just about at the store now so let's go check it out and see what's going on okay well i see my little ambulance sitting there and oh yeah it looks like a pile of dirt okay we've got a caterpillar we've got a big chunk of dirt there i'm gonna pull around front see what it looks like from the other side okay let's go check this out i'm kind of excited and kind of nervous at the same time [Music] well it appears they have successfully scraped down the surface here uh if this foundation thing doesn't work out i'll have the uh world's most shallow swimming swamp that back corner looks a little bit wet strange looks like there was bits of prior foundation that were underground there must have been some other structure here at some point that's kind of interesting you guys see that big blocks poured concrete that's uh thicker than your average sidewalk slab it looks like he just has to cut out this one little corner here and bring it down a little bit and that should be that starting to feel real that's gonna be a pretty good sized building too the world's biggest honeybee hopefully we didn't disturb a beehive man that's a lot of dirt hopefully they have the trucks coming today i mean they wouldn't leave their equipment behind i wouldn't think unless they had a plan for it let's hope this all gets hauled here before too long then i can get my engineer in so why are we waiting on an engineer well before we put a pad down in this spot here an engineer has to come and make sure this ground is stable enough to withstand the weight of a big cement pad and a building so they come and they test it and make sure it's all good once we get that stamp once we get that seal of approval from them um we get the go ahead to put it in so this is one step closer to actually getting this all put together and done but you know it all comes down to what the engineer says and what the city says there's no certainties when you're doing construction uh i'm hoping that there's not gonna be any other surprises or any big surprises but my goal this year is to try and get at least the foundation done to get the water and the gas lines moved over and that should be enough of a head start that uh come spring that we can get the uh the rest of the building put up so step in the right direction so a friend of mine barry has come in i've known for a couple years now and he brought me in i said i shouldn't let him in the door because he looks horny but he's uh brought me in uh these are uh novelty horns but they're ooga horns so they sound like a model t uh the reason why we're doing this trade is that my wolf whistle horn didn't pass the inspection on the old station wagon uh so he's gonna take the wolf whistle and put it to good use i presume i think so yeah and i'm gonna swap it out for this ooglehorn which will pass because it is an actual horn and give me kind of a fun little look so i appreciate that that's really cool that's good i hope you can use them and what is that you and the volvo did you pull up in a vault in the uh oh the gmc yeah okay i saw a volvo sent out there and it said head hunters on the front steering wheel i was worried that uh you know maybe some karma was catching up and we're gonna have a a fellow come looking for me but no uh maybe he's a recruiter and not an actual vicious head i think so yeah yeah today i'm driving my buick and you didn't bring yours i didn't i actually uh when i left here my um power brake started giving me issues so big thanks to barry for dropping off the ooga horn i'm gonna put that to good use it's just as comical as a wolf whistle but it actually serves the purpose of being a horn so hopefully that'll do the trick while i was sitting here at the shop though i did have uh diecast dave come in and he brought me some toys from his childhood and they're just so neat i had to show you one of the other things that i have to do while i'm at the store today is try and figure out what i'm gonna do with all this stuff now for the past year you've seen me buying and buying and buying and yes we do sell stuff in the store we have lots of customers that come through on a daily basis and things do sell but we are overstuffed so i've decided uh to partner with castner auctions i've dealt with them before and we are doing a unique um specialized auction sale in the middle of september and uh they've asked me to bring about four or five hundred lots in which means i have to go around the store and figure out exactly what i can live without four or 500 things that's a lot of stuff so it's going to take me a while to figure out exactly how uh i'm going to decide what goes and what stays but it's going to be a really big sale so i've got to start thinking about that plus i want to start redoing parts of the store too to make it more interesting and more unique and and uh boy i've got my work cut out for me um the good news is the engineer did come and check on the soil outside and he said that the land looks good you can put a foundation on it so that should give us a go ahead to do the other construction we have to do and i'm really pushing a timeline here to get that foundation in before winter hits so fingers crossed that all goes well but in the meantime i've gotta walk around the store and figure out what we can take the auction sale and that's not gonna be an easy job this was a little series put out by ideal toys back in the early 1970s called powermite and what the powermite series was was a tiny little set of power tools that you could use to do things like this young guy is cutting a piece of balsa wood so they can make airplanes or what have you but what's really neat about it is that they're all itsy bitsy they're little tiny actual die cast that's a little sander um there's your skill saw uh we've got a little drill here and you can put bits in it it's a real little tool and they're powered off of two d-cell batteries that would just go in the little power unit there and then you plug your tool in but it came with little tiny hammers and tools and wrenches and so forth and i just thought it was so cool now um sadly i haven't been able to get this set going i think the contacts of the leads need some cleaning before it'll go again but really really interesting piece and you know you kind of ask yourself well i wonder why they don't make that for kids nowadays well they probably should i mean the drilling that would be fun but all it took was one pesky younger brother with a tiny little skill saw to probably you know create some havoc around the house and make it so they discontinued it forever but for a collectible it's really neat and they are tiny little basically quarter scale working power tools and there's lots of people who collect miniatures that be a great little addition to a miniature collection but just super super cool stuff so i've come out to the backyard and we've got uh diecast dave nitrous die cast um we're kind of looking at the the aftermath of them digging all this out we had a little bit of rain and it's starting to fill up in that corner the engineer has come and checked it out he said it's all good and i see there's this big giant hole here that wasn't here the other day i don't think it's groundhogs i have a feeling it's from uh them taking a core sample yeah probably because i you know they would have had to take it from somewhere that was a surprise and i think there's little bits of core sample over there but we never had a chance of metal detect in this area and the last time we metal detect up the front we did find some coins that were from 1910 and i might kind of poke around here later today and see if anything jumps out i don't want to get too muddy though but hopefully nothing jumps out well might be if that's a gopher hole something might actually jump out at us um i've invited zach back over so we're gonna see if he wants to come and do some metal detecting yeah that's cool yeah he'll have to tell him to bring him some hip waders with that mud that's over there little bits of foil there's a marble i mean you can see that there was there's people and a whole pile of ants um bits of garbage and debris foil gold looking foil but just foil oh hang on that looks like maybe part of an earring or something oh a lump oh it's okay it's kind of a stone i'm gonna take this inside and wash it off okay this is super caked in mud [Music] oops okay i want to make sure i don't drop anything it looks like a charm bracelet maybe [Music] well it's really on there oh look look it's a tiny little coin it's a and there's another coin okay [Music] what's that it's gold colored i don't know if it's real gold anyway i'm going to clean these guys up the date on that four pence 1840. [Music] that is not familiar with that oh united states of america 1853 [Music] this that predates this building by quite a bit now what's this well that'd be nice if that was really gold 1790 okay i'm gonna give that a bit of a rinse look at the condition these things are in so far the oldest coin that we found out there was 1910 but 1790 not too many coins were gold colored that weren't actual gold so um i'm gonna take a break i'm gonna get grab a toothbrush and try and clean this off let's get it cleaned up first look who stopped in it's josh can you tell you can't tell because of the mask but he's a man who's abiding by the biology um you brought me in some stuff to look at yeah some of it's cool some of it's pretty interesting well i i can recognize it right away what it is they're animation cells yeah so where did these come from my my mom had them these are the good ones your mom had them but these ones are kind of a little bit possibly ruined yeah my mom had them what was your mom doing with the disney animation cells i don't actually know she picked them up somewhere yes okay so let's see what does it say i and p note the change was made on pwg 529 snow's chin so snow white [Music] also the dimple well look how specific they are they're right now they're talking about like hey take the dimple out cell s33 yeah so these ones i don't know but like because usually they have a paper in between them like these right yeah but for some reason all the papers and the cells themselves have been whatever i don't know now you kind of called me about these before yeah and we figured this was from the 50th anniversary of snow white that they put out a re-release or a newer version of it based off of on one of these it has it has a yeah right here 1986 yeah 1987. and snow white was i think 36 or 37 when the first animated film so this would make sense 50th anniversary yeah yeah sw snow white yeah scene 30 so that would be your scene number yeah background 39 so they're saying what background still to use segment 3 snow white scene 39 and so you could look if you had the script you could see scene 39 something obviously bad is happening to snow white she's upset somebody's like being mean to her you'll never amount to anything and she's like really no yeah and then here she has a she has a stick oh yeah oh here she goes she has no eyes yeah well that's a problem oh this one's just a stick oh yeah maybe she got hit by the stick we'll have to watch it and see what happened yeah yeah she's holding the stick yeah she's waving it around angrily something's going on yeah so when it comes to animation cells when you have a full body like that and you can see the face that's gonna have much more value than if you just have like you know a stick i feel like since these ones are kind of stuck together we might have issues with uh separating them because i mean these have been sitting for who knows well years obviously right and there might be even more than just this but uh this is what i randomly found so that's really cool and have you met zach before metal detector zach okay so you can see we we peeled back most of the dirt here um and we never got this far back before but i was digging see where that shovel hole is right there that area right in front of me over here yeah that's where it came out of it it was just stuck in the side i thought it was an earring okay and there were some marbles and some other stuff yeah there's a piece of glass but so i kind of poked around and sure enough it was a handful of coins including a gold one so if you've got your metal detector you do right yeah okay um i would definitely check this area i don't have a metal detector with me today man they could have easily like shoveled it away yeah well and see there's a big chunk of cement um that was part of a foundation that i didn't even know was underground um so i was told that back by the puddle is where the house was and there was another house or property back here prior to this being a story even uh he said he used to pass by the store and say hi to the old man when he was sitting back there he said that the funny thing about the house he said was it was like down a hill like the the land had been built up around the house because the house had been there so long oh interesting so it was probably a really old farm or homestead yeah um so i hope you find something i'm going to leave you too and i'm going to go back inside and talk to joshua what the plans are for the shelf awesome okay have fun i will don't forget to record it if you see anything yeah i'll try and what's the name of your youtube channel by the way uh it's edmonton relics edmonton rel i only have the one video up so far i've not really enough time to make another video but there should be some more up soon for sure okay everybody was saying you gotta do uh do some videos and put them up so okay well good happy hunting hopefully you find more than a broken glass bottle but if it was a pocket drop or something i'm hoping there's something else so definitely all right have fun um dude this is dope i like this yeah it's cool apparently it drives too really yeah everybody likes the tow truck i feel nervous about these pedals being here i feel like if i press them we're just gonna go flying out into oh i have the emergency brake on and there's a cinder block on the other side but knowing you you could probably still find a way to make that happen we kind of chatted about this before um i built the top that's on there right now but it's not as dramatic as what we have on the other side so what i want to do is build it squared off go all the way up to the top and all the way over pretty much exactly like what we did on this side so i want it to look like this like it was built the same way like the same people that built that you know you um and but not the 100 year old guy that built it originally um i wanted to look consistent but my question was i have this space here bothers me because it's wasted space i would like to have something come all the way to the window but then what do we do for the base so it kind of ties into this or do we just build the shelf as narrow as we do the back and go straight down with it what do you think there's a lot you can do like i'm thinking if i would like it to come all the way to the window so i have extra shelves yeah and then go all the way to that window oh that was fast a little muddy up there but this is a military button of some kind you found a button already yeah well maybe maybe military explains what that was maybe it was uh well you can use the sink you want to go wash it up yeah definitely okay that was fast okay well i guess we'll see what zac found what's so muddy out there my shoes are muddying up your floor okay oh yeah look at you uh well why'd you use the garden hose outside okay yeah maybe that's better poor zach you know people always say i'm i'm unprepared but he came in sandals and he muddied my floor today no that's okay okay there's a garden hose outside though [Music] he was so excited he tracked mud all through the store but that's all right we can mop that up i think i see zach coming back hey so what'd you find out well it looks like it's a northwest mounted police button oh are you serious yeah see oh yeah nw mp yeah that would be northwest mounted police it's a little squished yeah that's okay though it turned out really pretty it still has a shank on the back too i wonder if it'd be popped back out probably yeah no i wouldn't try it but that's a queen's crown so probably queen victoria so 1800s definitely yeah probably okay so that gives us a time frame of the the fines why is that why are we finding stuff so much earlier than what i didn't really try that corner when we were here so maybe well we just uncovered it yeah oh okay yeah like we just uncovered all yeah this was actually in a clump of dirt that was just like i didn't have to dig for this it was just a clump of dirt laying on the surface oh okay yeah so i wonder if the excavator like disturbed the site uh i'm hoping so okay yeah well if you find a gold coin bring it to me but i think we'll have to give that to you as a memento uh of your fine today awesome all right yeah but keep digging okay guys of all the crazy finds i wasn't expecting to find in my own yard i had to just tear up the whole place here that is a 1790 it is a gold coin that thing is actual gold it's um it's called a guinea uh i don't know if it's a half guinea or full guinea but it's pretty big and it could be worth like a thousand bucks so you know what i'm gonna do i'm gonna get my shuffle and dig some more because uh maybe somebody dropped something out of their pocket or who knows what but anyway i'm gonna go do some more digging because i don't miss anything else um but you know i'm finding stuff and i don't even have metal detectors so there's got to be more stuff here i think there's still are you getting a hit somewhere in here there's just so much iron that it's not making it [Music] just you know one thing i have to say about you zack you are a man who's not afraid to get dirty no i'm not this mud smells funky you're gonna be it smells like cow crap yeah it does i wonder if if it was an old privy or something you'd think it wouldn't have smelt after all this long that's very true yeah but it does smell like we're at a farm and the cows have been nearby i can't quite tell where that signal is unfortunately your feet are gonna be very well exfoliated yeah after all this i think you've got a garden hose yeah we're gonna need it for all of you after this i think did you check the where did the uh buffalo thing the northwest mountain police from one of the clumps of dirt well that's where i found the i found it in the side there yeah but well i found mine where that bottle top is there okay like right here yeah yeah are you getting a good hit over there yeah so zach just pulled up really good uh skeleton key which is probably from maybe from the old house that was there [Music] what kind of signal is it giving you uh it's not it might be something silver it's kind of raining up higher but we'll see maybe it's pirate treasure you are you know i am actually quite thrilled about finding a gold coin i looked it up that's like a potentially like a thousand dollar coin maybe not the hole drilled in it but it's a good coin it was a really good condition too but even in the late 1800s that would have been an old coin then yeah absolutely that would have been somebody's you know keepsake that's probably why they had it on a ring with other coins just as a hand-me-down all right it's out okay hopefully it's something good it's in my hand if it's a rusty nail gonna buy a new detector if it's arrested hopefully it's another old coin or something uh sure looks like a coin is it gold uh it might just be a penny no is it an old penny at least uh it's a wheat cent so american yeah see it's too muddy [Music] so you found a 1919 american penny yeah americans they were visiting they were over here too i guess still yeah well like i was saying you know fur trade klondike this was a pool hall yeah they could have stopped here on the way up to the klondike okay let's see this penny you found oh yeah is it over here yeah it's right there you can show them the uh the skeleton here okay so that's the skeleton key and this is the 1919 wheat penny [Music] another hit [Music] one over here well i see a marble right underneath here see i think it must have overturned some debris or [Music] or something yeah there's a glass there's a glass um yeah i saw the glass marble or the the marble but the jar top yeah oh there's a jar top yeah oh yeah like a mason jar yeah see this is why you gotta look before you just bury everything in concrete because you might be burying history yeah i'm glad you had some detectors out here before you buried all this stuff well yeah i would have buried literally like a thousand bucks that that's gonna be enough to possibly pay for part of the foundation it would have been history huh hold up my my inner alex there ah oh you never know you hope that strikes twice there's part of an old broken bottle right by where i found it i mean it's possible it was inside of a bottle but look how close it came with the excavator like one dig an inch over and that thing would have been probably split in half this is the spot where i found that little bundle of coins and the only other thing i found was a tiny little key um but i haven't found anything else i'm gonna dig around here a little bit more um i don't know if it was like a um a pocket drop you know like or if it was this dirt looks like it was disturbed so this might have been pushed up when they were excavating uh but that is the oldest bundle of coins i found on site so far the other stuff we found was 1910 1913 around then but english coins i guess that makes sense you know we're commonwealth so this is an old old part of town and that was a big surprise found another coin but it's just a new newer penny not as exciting but this tells me that there's stuff on my property and we better check it out before we put a foundation in it might get buried for good okay let's see how the coin stew is going well the dirt looks like it's coming off i'll give that a bit of a stir and a rinse we'll see how it came out okay that is pretty cool looks like a citrine it has kind of a little etching in the end of it of it looks like a harp you see that the gold coin the guinea it's been discolored by having this other little um i guess silver coin resting against it for so long that it left a little impression it didn't come out in the cleaning it's hard to say what kind of condition that's in i don't know if i'll be able to clean that up a bit that side's good i'll see if that'll come off if i give it a little bit of normally you don't clean coins that one has discoloration on it from the silver so probably won't hurt anything but i'll see if that'll rub off have is brasso at the store i don't have any other polish than this but it works on quite a bit of different surfaces and i again i never recommend cleaning a coin that one was discolored but look you can see even with just a little gentle uh movement on that with the toothbrush that little ring has come off and he's not in bad shape you can make out quite a bit of the detail on there i'm glad that came off so we'll give that a bit of a wipe down and see what it looks like looks way better with the mud off of it but this is um i've learned they've drilled holes obviously to make this into sort of a little charm probably hung from a necklace or something but um that just bends open and i can take these off so we're gonna take all the coins off here so we can have a better look at it so now that it has that big discolored ring off of it you can actually make out a lot of the detail and an old king george there he's not in bad shape you can see his hair his eyes his nose um the uh the front of it i guess that would be the obverse the other side the front of it i'm sorry a little bit my hands are dirty from digging outside and stuff but look you can actually see everything nice and clear um the other coin that was cool i learned that this is a us silver three cent coin and every star was for one of the 13 or one of the colonies i think it was 13 at that time still but that's a good early piece 1853 that's you know it's got some wear like some of these have a little bit more wear than others the silver coins 1840 you can see the there's quite a bit of wear on that but overall i mean who am i to complain i just found a bunch of silver and gold out in my own backyard that does not happen every single day and i'm keeping the little uh the rings and such as well because uh my guess is that if you had a gold coin you probably had it on a little gold ring so that's probably end up being solid gold too and the price of gold has gone way up lately um i do need to check and see how that cleaned up nice i just took a little toothbrush to that and look how good that came up this i believe is probably a citrine but how old would that have to be for somebody to have engraved a harp into it like what type of tools and machinery did they have back then do that kind of work but um that's pretty darn neat so i got a little information from a customer that was walking through he lived in this neighborhood across the street well when there was houses across the street he said there was houses there they were on the other side of the community hall and he remembers when my store was here and there was a vacant lot and another vacant lot and a building next to it and what he told me was that um back in the 30s or 40s there was a gentleman who had sort of a really old little house and it was it was so old that it was built down sort of at a lower level than the rest of the land around it so it would have predated even my building here which was put up in 1913. so it's possible from where i found that thing that it could be a remnant from when that fellow had the house there and it could be an 1800s home that was here at one point that was not on the record uh it's hard to say i didn't see anything on the land titles about a building being there but you know apparently there was and it was nice to get some uh some evidence from a guy that lived in the neighborhood at the time that there was in fact a house very either on my property or close to my property line right back where we're putting the addition so he was saying that right where that puddle is maybe a little bit over used to stand an old old house that was here before any of these other buildings were and it was built down much lower that and he said they remembered that the dirt kind of came up to where the sidewalk was so that would be um you know lower elevation that could have been a very old you know pioneer home and i found a picture online from the old fire station that was here around the turn of the century and sure enough if i look at the picture in the backyard there was a structure or a house that was in this area so who knows maybe the guy buried stuff in a bottle in the yard or maybe there's a can of coins who knows but we're definitely going to try and dig it i was definitely not expecting today to turn out to be a day of metal detecting and finding buried treasure josh came by zach came by and so far found a few things i'm gonna leave zach out there to work a little bit longer and hopefully he'll post an update on his channel with what he finds and uh maybe if i'm lucky he'll find another gold coin it'll help pay off some of the renovations of the building but anyway fun day never see this kind of stuff happen uh i go out looking for antiques everywhere like people's houses barns addicts whatever and i got stuff in my own yard that i wasn't even uh aware of so i guess pays to metal detect anyway guys have a wonderful day thanks for tuning in don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already and we'll see you all soon bye for now [Music] you
