[THEME MUSIC] DISPATCHER: 9-1-1,
what's your emergency? GEORGE: There's two guys
trying to break into my house right now. DISPATCHER: Can you see
what they look like? GEORGE: Tall guys-- they have
dark sweatshirts and caps on. Come immediately. DISPATCHER: Can you lock
the door where you're at? [BEEPS] Are you there? Hello. Hello. 9-1-1, What's the nature
of your emergency? CASSIE: I need help. Somebody just threw me in
the back of their truck. They kidnapped me from school. DISPATCHER: Do you know
where you're going? CASSIE: I don't know. Please, I need help. Oh my god. I don't want to die. DISPATCHER: 9-1-1,
how may I help you? CAROLYN: Somebody
broke into my house. They're in the house now. DISPATCHER: Are
you in the house? CAROLYN: Yes. Hurry up. They're coming up the stairs. DISPATCHER: Can you
lock yourself in a room? CAROLYN: No. I hear him. DISPATCHER: Are they in
the room where you are? CAROLYN: Yes. Oh, God. DISPATCHER: 9-1-1,
what's your emergency? GEORGE: There's two guys
trying to break into my house right now. I'm at [BLEEP] Lane. DISPATCHER: Can you see
what they look like? GEORGE: Tall guys-- they have
dark sweatshirts and caps on. They're trying to pick my lock
on my back door of my house. Come immediately. DISPATCHER: Can you lock
the door where you're at? GEORGE: Yes. [BEEPS] DISPATCHER: Are you there? [BEEPS] Hello? Hello? [MUFFLED VOICES] Northfield looks just like
a small little town that you would see if driving through
to go to a bigger city-- people everywhere and families. Bad things just
didn't happen here. A lot of people knew
George personally. Or they knew of him. George was a successful
local businessman. But he was also a
very private person. And his property reflected that. It was set back,
secluded, and immaculate. Unfortunately, those trees
provide the perfect cover. Because our
neighborhood was so quiet, it was easy to notice when
something was out of place. There were two guys in a car,
and they passed us twice. But they never pulled
into a driveway. It definitely didn't
feel like they were lost. It felt like they
were up to no good. On the day of
the May 17, 2011, it was a normal day for George. His kids were in school, and
he was preparing for his day to go to work. George is getting his coffee,
and he heard some noise. He saw two men dressed in
black, looking right back of the residence. [BEEPS] [TELEPHONE RINGS] [TICKING] GEORGE: There's two guys
trying to break into my house right now. I'm at [BLEEP] Lane. They're trying to pick my lock
on my back door of my house. DISPATCHER: You're home alone? GEORGE: They've been
peepin' in here for probably about 10 minutes. And I just-- I thought they were going to
go away or something, but no. Come immediately. I'm in my front bedroom. [SIRENS BLARING] [TICKING] DISPATCHER: OK. Stay on the phone with me. GEORGE: They're trying to
picked the lock, ma'am. DISPATCHER: In the
front door or back door? GEORGE: Back of my house. DISPATCHER: Can you lock
the door where you're at? GEORGE: The place is locked up. They're trying to get in. DISPATCHER: I mean,
the room you're in, can you lock the door? GEORGE: Yes. DISPATCHER: Lock that
bedroom door where you're at. GEORGE: You got it. Come quietly. DISPATCHER: Yeah. GEORGE: Come quietly,
and you can nab them. DISPATCHER: And they have
dark-colored sweatshirts on? GEORGE: Yes, black--
black with hoods. Come quickly.
DISPATCHER: They are, sir. They're on the way. Stay on the phone. [SIRENS BLARING] GEORGE: I have a driveway
that comes in behind my house. Tell the county sheriff he
can come behind my house. Left-hand side of
the house, it's a driveway goes to the back
where there's a garage. Are they on their way? DISPATCHER: Oh, yeah. They've been on their way. Just stay on the phone. Can you hear anything now? GEORGE: No. Because this home invasion
happened in the middle of the day, we didn't know
if this was a random burglary or an actual personal attack. [TICKING] DISPATCHER: Is there a window
you can look out and see anything? GEORGE: Here comes
the sheriff, great. I see him out front. DISPATCHER: You
see him out front? GEORGE: Yes. DISPATCHER: I want you just
to stay on the phone with me. GEORGE: Hm. [PHONE BEEPS] [GRUNTING] DISPATCHER: There's
somebody in the house. They're in. Hello? Hello? George was locked
in a room, looking out the window toward the street,
waiting for my arrival. The two suspects were
up looking room to room, looking for George,
knowing he was in there. [TICKING] GEORGE: Here comes the sheriff. Great I see him out front. Hm. [PHONE BEEPS] DISPATCHER: Are you there? Hello? Hello? Hello? There's somebody in the house. They're in. Hello? [MUFFLED SCREAMS] INTRUDER: Go lock the
back of the house, dude. Go lock the back of the house. I heard the muffled
screams coming from inside. I advised my dispatch someone's
screaming in the residence. I don't know how
far away my backup was at this point in time. But I had no option. [TICKING] DISPATCHER: He's screaming. Hello? [MUFFLED SCREAMING] Hello? Get down! Let me see your hands! Let me see your hands! Get on the [BLEEP] ground. Do it before it's
all done, buddy. Get on the [BLEEP] ground! Get on the [BLEEP] ground! Put your [BLEEP] hands up! Don't [BLEEP] move! Put your [BLEEP] hands up. And don't [BLEEP] move! [POLICE RADIO CHATTER] OFFICER: You got
any weapons on you? Stay there. Get on the [BLEEP] ground! Put your [BLEEP] hands up. Don't [BLEEP] move! Down! You don't [BLEEP] move. You understand that over there? INTRUDER: I understand. Roll back on your belly. Roll back on your belly. Hands behind your back. DISPATCHER: I can hear him. We has got him on the floor. [POLICE RADIO CHATTER] You almost got shot. You know that, right? DISPATCHER: I'm gonna hang up. When I saw the second intruder
come around the hallway, I was alarmed. I was the only officer. Backup hadn't arrived. And I had to apprehend
two suspects. The overall master
plan of the intruders was to harm or torture George
to get what they wanted. They had a lock pick kit. They had a knife. They had wire ties. They had wire cutters, a metal
cable that locks at both ends, and later, they found some
gasoline cans in the vehicles. They just would have tried
to clean up behind them, if you will, with a
little house fire. George is doing good now. I still see him around
the neighborhood, outside doing yard
work, cutting the grass. This was the ideal outcome. George didn't get hurt. Deputy Dobbins didn't get hurt. He ended up arresting two guys
that never have a chance to do this to anyone else again. That's the outcome
you always want. I think he was very lucky. Had he not called
9-1-1, I honestly feel it wouldn't have
been this outcome. [PHONE RINGING] DISPATCHER: 9-1-1, what's
the nature of your emergency? CASSIE: I need help. Somebody just threw me in
the back of their truck. They kidnapped me from school. Do you know
where you're going? CASSIE: I don't know. I'm in the back of a truck. I'm in a cab, closed up. Please, I need help. What's your name? CASSIE: Cassie Crawford. Please, help me. Oh my god. I don't want to die. My daughter Cassie was 29. She was very pretty and smart. She was outgoing,
lovable, friendly. One month before
the incident, Cassie received a Facebook request
from an old high school friend, Nathan Parsons. Cassie and Nathan
dated for about a year. And then they didn't talk
to each other for 10 years. Even though Cassie knew
that Nathan was nice, She wasn't interested in
a relationship with him. Unfortunately, Nathan
felt differently. After Cassie rejected him,
Nathan become obsessive with her. She wasn't answering his texts. She wasn't answering his phone
calls, wasn't calling him back. Nathan acted like if Cassie's
not going to answer me, I'm just going to go
where Cassie's at. CASSIE: (SCREAMING) Help! Help! Somebody help me! Somebody help me! According to witnesses,
he struck Ms. Crawford and then grabbed her and drug
her and threw her into the back of this pickup truck. [BREATHING HEAVILY] [TELEPHONE RINGS] [TICKING] CASSIE: I need help. Somebody just threw me in
the back of their truck. DISPATCHER: OK. Do you know where you're going? CASSIE: I don't know-- DISPATCHER: What
road are you on? CASSIE: --if I'm on the highway.
I'm in the back of a truck. I'm in a cab, closed up. They kidnapped me from school. They three me in the
back of the truck and shut the leather
covering and locked it. DISPATCHER: OK. OK. So how many of them were there? CASSIE: Just one. DISPATCHER: It was a man? CASSIE: Yes. DISPATCHER: OK, honey. What's this guy's name? CASSIE: Nathan Parsons. Please, I need help because-- DISPATCHER: I understand. What kind of trunk are you in? CASSIE: It's a Ford. It's got an extended cab. And it's got like a black thing
that covers the back of the-- of the truck-- a closing
thing that comes down. [SIRENS BLARING] OFFICER 1: I'm looking
for a Ford pickup truck. OFFICER 2: Copy, Ford pickup. We'll keep you advised. [TICKING] DISPATCHER: Is he a student
at the college too, Cassie? CASSIE: No, I went to
high school with him. And I haven't seen
him in 10 years. And he like wants me to be
in a relationship with him. DISPATCHER: Did you know he was
even going to be there today? CASSIE: No. Where are you at right now? CASSIE: I think we're
on Tri County Highway. It's a back way to
Winchester, I'm pretty sure. OK. Is it a four-lane highway? CASSIE: Yeah. We're turning left. We're going towards
Adams County. DISPATCHER: And what makes you
think you're headed possibly towards Adams County? CASSIE: I don't know. I was just trying to go
by the way he turned. I don't know. DISPATCHER: It's the
direction you felt it go? CASSIE: Please, I need help. DISPATCHER: Cassie? Cassie? Nathan Parsons was an
incredibly dangerous man. He just murdered his stepfather
just hours prior to kidnapping Cassie. He strangled to
death his stepfather and disposed of his body,
and then took his belongings to purchase heroin. The situation wasn't going
to end well for Cassie. We feared that it would
be a murderer suicide. [TICKING] DISPATCHER: How long have you
been in the truck driving? Can you tell? CASSIE: About 5 or 10 minutes. DISPATCHER: Cassie,
honey, where do you think he might go in Adams. Do you have a clue? CASSIE: No, I don't think he
knows anybody in Adams County. I don't know what he is doing. Please, I need help. When her cell
phone disconnected, I didn't know if it was because
Cassie was in a bad cell phone range or if Nathan
had harmed her. The moment the call was lost,
we lost the GPS coordinates. So at that point, we didn't
know what way they were going. [TELEPHONE RINGS] [TICKING] DISPATCHER: Brown County 9-1-1,
the address of your emergency? CASSIE: I don't have an address. DISPATCHER: OK,
honey, look around. What do you see
around you right now? CASSIE: I'm in the back of a
truck, and the top is down. I can't see anything. I'm in pure darkness. DISPATCHER: And
you're Cassie, right? CASSIE: Cassie, yes. DISPATCHER: OK.
OK. It's all right. We're going to find you, OK? Just keep that phone open, OK? Even if you can't talk to me,
Sweetheart, just leave it open. All right? I'm tracking your cell phone. CASSIE: Oh, OK. OSHP DISPATCHER: 8-3-9. OFFICER : Go ahead. OSHP DISPATCHER: I have a
report of a possible kidnapping around the Winchester area,
Winchester and Cross Street 136 and Cross Street. Can you head that way? OK. I'm on 73. I'll be en route from there. [SIRENS BLARING] Adams County is
exceptionally rural. There are multiple small side
roads that are heavily wooded. CASSIE: We're turning left. We're on a gravel road. DISPATCHER: You can
tell it's gravel? CASSIE: Yes. DISPATCHER: OK. She can tell they've
turned on gravel. I'm waiting for the
rebid to go through. Cassie, listen to me. If he stops, I want you
to leave that phone open. Just flip it on in your
pocket or something. Just keep the call on. The rebid's still showing her
on 136, just north of Matias. I don't know what he
could have turned on. She just knows that it
suddenly turned to gravel. [SIRENS BLARING] How many turns have you
made since it turned gravel? Any at all? CASSIE: I think we turned
right, and it's still gravel. Oh my god. DISPATCHER: OK. Say real still and quiet
for just a second, Cassie, till we know what
he's going to do, OK? CASSIE: Please help me. I don't want to die. He couldn't live without her. And we believe that he was going
to kill her as well as himself. Anytime you see
someone kidnap, you know you're working with a
person that looks at situations differently than society does. And you have to approach that
situation with severe caution. [TICKING] DISPATCHER: As
long as you've got that phone open on an
active call, Cassie, I can keep tracking it, OK? CASSIE: OK. Please help me. I don't want to die. Oh my god. DISPATCHER: Cassie? Cassie? [SIRENS BLARING] She believes he made a
right turn and the road is still gravel. Adams County's advising
Mathias Road turns to gravel. All right, I'm going to
take 136 down to Mathias. I'm heading that way. [SIRENS BLARING] OFFICER: I've got a unit
coming in off of 247 that way-- 593 is coming up 136, and
1005 is coming south on 136. The police were on the way. But it was difficult because
he was a moving target. [SIRENS BLARING] OFFICER 1: 137 and
Potts Road now. Vehicle's approaching
right at us. OFFICER 2: OK, 839. OFFICER 1: He got around us! Hands where I can see
them, outside the car. Put your hands on your head! When we turned
down the gravel road, I thought we were going
to some abandoned house, and I'm never going
to be seen again. It was like my life
flashed before my eyes. Cassie did everything
right on the call. Her ability to stay calm helped
us to get help to her faster. 15 years on the
Highway Patrol, this by far was the most
intense stressful situation I've ever been involved with. The first thought that
went through my mind when I heard this is I need
to get there as fast as I can to get this victim back safely. Nathan was high on drugs. He was upset. He was hurt. And he was out of control. Looking back on that day, I try
to figure out what I could have done differently. But there isn't anything. I'm just so lucky to be alive. [TELEPHONE RINGS] DISPATCHER: 9-1-1,
how may I help you? CAROLYN: Somebody
broke into my house. They're in the house now. DISPATCHER: Are
you in the house? CAROLYN: Yes. Hurry up. They're coming up the stairs. DISPATCHER: Can you
lock yourself in a room? CAROLYN: No. DISPATCHER: Where
are you in the house? CAROLYN: [PANTING]
I'm in the closet. Oh god. My wife Carrie and I lived
in a house outside of Tacoma. And it was in a secluded area. You know, it had five acres. It was only accessed by
a single road in and out. Driving by, one would not have
realized that there were even homes up the long dirt road. There is not a
sign at the bottom. TIM: We liked this seclusion. We felt always safe there. Her office faces the driveway. So she saw a car stop
on the road out front. [TELEPHONE RINGS] [TICKING] Is your name Carolyn? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: OK, Carolyn. I'm going to stay on
the phone with you. What's your address? CAROLYN: [BLEEP] East Pioneer,
right at the gravel road. DISPATCHER: Sending canine. I'm just typing this in. Is there a mailbox out front? CAROLYN: No. DISPATCHER: When we go up
to the gravel driveway, do we want to go to the
left or to the right? CAROLYN: He's in the house now.
DISPATCHER: OK, when you go-- CAROLYN: Yes,
they're in the house. DISPATCHER: I understand. When we come up the gravel
driveway, do we go to the left or to the right? CAROLYN: Oh, the driveway--
we're on the left. There's only one way. [SIRENS BLARING] DISPATCHER: Carrie
was my eyes and ears. And I needed to get
as much information as I could from her. Keeping her quiet and calm
was my number one priority. CAROLYN: [PANTING] DISPATCHER: Did you
see anybody by chance? CAROLYN: I saw a guy. DISPATCHER: OK. I'm sorry. You saw a guy? CAROLYN: [PANTING] DISPATCHER: I am having
a hard time hearing you. CAROLYN: There was
a girl in the car. I hear their voices.
DISPATCHER: OK. I just want to
talk to my partner. Hold on. She saw a male in the house. She believes a female
was still in the car. CAROLYN: They're
coming upstairs. DISPATCHER: Can you
lock yourself in a room? CAROLYN: No. DISPATCHER: Where
are you in the house? OK, if you can't talk
to me, that's fine. Are you in a bedroom? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: OK. Are you under a bed? CAROLYN: No, I'm in the closet. I heard a noise upstairs. DISPATCHER: He's upstairs? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: You can still hear
them as we're talking, right? CAROLYN: Yes. Oh god. The situation that Carrie
was in was like a nightmare. Something's terrifying
you, and you're trapped. DISPATCHER: We had two suspects. One suspect was
breaking into her house. The other one was
in the car, which led me to believe the one
in the car was the lookout. You're in the closet? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: Are they in
the room where you are? CAROLYN: I think
they're upstairs. But they're not
in this room yet. DISPATCHER: OK. We have officers in
the area already. And you're in the
upstairs bedroom? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: You can still hear
them as we're talking, right? CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: I'm
staying with you, OK? CAROLYN: OK. [SIRENS BLARING] CAROLYN: [CRYING] DISPATCHER: I'm still
here with you, Carolyn. OK? You're in an upstairs bedroom. If the officers goes up the
stairs, which room are you in? CAROLYN: (WHISPERS) The
first one on the left. DISPATCHER: She's in the
first bedroom on the left as you go up the stairs. And he's not in
that room, right? CAROLYN: Yes. I hear him. [POLICE RADIO CHATTER] Is officer here? DISPATCHER: Yes,
there's officers there. I don't want you coming
out of the closet, OK? I want you to stay
in the closet. We'll find you. CAROLYN: Oh, god. Hands up!
Hands up! Out of the car! [DOG BARKING] CAROLYN: Oh, god. [DOG BARKING] DISPATCHER: OK. We have one arrest. You said there was
two, though, for sure. There was a girl in the car. And there was a guy. CAROLYN: Yes. DISPATCHER: OK. Did you only see one
male in the house? CAROLYN: I only saw one. Hands up.
Hands up. Put your arms up! On the ground. On the ground. On the ground. [DOG BARKING] [POLICE RADIO CHATTER] DISPATCHER: OK. We're coming into through
the rear side, OK? And they're going
to come to you. You stay right where you are. CAROLYN: Now I'm shaking,
now that they're here. [DOG BARKING] The dog found me. OK, yes. DISPATCHER: OK I'll let you go.
CAROLYN: Thank you so much. Bye. When I was in the
closet, all I could see was a strip of light
underneath the door. And I could hear him enter
the bedroom I was in. And I was just focused
on that strip of light-- really, really hoping not
to see the shadow of feet beyond there. OFFICER: The
suspects in this case were a mother and
son burglary team. Having your house
broke into and ransacked makes you feel violated. Your home IS the one place
where you should be able to feel safe, and I wasn't. As time has gone on, I
have been able to move on. It's given me a greater
appreciation for life because you never know
what's going to happen.
