Fuck me.
Also I love that a bunch of people just got together, self organised and ran a massive distributed computing experiment to solve something so pointless.
Hacking in it's truest (and original) form.
That's a really impressive array of techniques used to reverse engineer a seed.
Has this found its way to r/hacking?
Also BOINC is a fantastic project everybody should look into. Currently there are a lot of work units for Covid.
If your looking for an in-depth documentation on the techniques, here it is: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PpZqHWXPLjOsXf_T7uyH4rWuxUMxzBlxvv5gm19P_Z8
Here's a naive question. What if it was a screenshot of a mountain and/or lake that had already been sculpted and modified? Seems like there no guarantee that a seed that would generate what was captured and crapped for that icon actually exists because it could have been handmade.
Wow, that is a very high level of dedication!
I'm not a Minecraft player. I understand how Minecraft generates its worlds and all but can someone explain what Pack.PNG and why anyone is bothering to find its seed? Is this something that happens often?

I just love this, the level of dedication to get something so insignificant just out of curiousity...wow.
