oh 1987 was a huge year for pop culture everybody was concerned for Baby Jessica who fell down the well Beastie Boys Licensed to L the first rap album to hit number one and stayed there for seven weeks Ronald Reagan told Gorbachev to tear down this wall and Patrick Swayze ensured that nobody puts baby in a corner and the NES was establishing itself as the premier video game console or entertainment system for U.S homes providing a ton of great arcade games that looked pretty close to the arcade version as well as establishing a few IPS for the NES that are still making new video games today how are you feeling you got Jon rakester covering a ton of games that came out in 1987 for the NES the good the bad the Obscure and although Genesis does what Nintendo you can't spell Genesis without NES and if you agree with that make sure you're subscribed and going chronologically in 1987 the first game released was a game by Capcom Trojan brings the arcade classic home to the NES now Trojan in my opinion not the greatest game in the world but it's still worth a play it's a PO post-apocalyptic world but here's you with your sword and your Shield the unfortunate thing is even in the arcade you have a sword button and a shield button up is jump and up should never be jump unless it's a 2d fighting game but still the fact he had a shield is kind of cool even though sometimes the enemies attack too quickly and it's hard for you to block the attacks and everything like that again not the best game in the world from Capcom but it was a decent arcade Port I do have fond memories going down to my local gas station the Tiger Mart getting a Big Gulp and playing me some Trojan when I had an extra 25 cents pro wrestling came out in 1987 and this game more than any other game was the reason I knew I needed an NES now I was aware of the Nintendo Entertainment System before this and I didn't have mine yet but soon as I saw this game in action I knew I had to have it had a cast of characters six wrestlers to choose from and depending on who you play as you have your own specialty move just like your finishers man I love it some seem a little bit more devastating than others but still the fact that each wrestler had its own moves that only they could do with no one else and most people love star man and starband's great and everything I liked the Amazon because the Amazon would do the old heel move you know stab him in the head with a fork and then like show the referee that his hands are clean didn't have any weapons pro wrestling in my opinion still fun today it's easily one of the best wrestling games we had on the NES an arcade classic in Russian attack from Konami the best pun in video game history Russian attack rush in attack come on now another gamer up his jump oh well you know whatever notoriously hard not that it's a hard or difficult game it's the fact that it's a one hit kill game and games with a one-hit kill well they're quarter bunches in the arcade and on the NES it just makes it that much more frustrating it was still worth borrowing from a friend if they already had it now video game rentals weren't quite a thing yet but they just started becoming a thing around this time yeah all you can do is just stab the fools anyway and you'll watch out for the other guys but you can also pick up these Bazookas and you know that'll help you clear a path in a big hurry [Music] yeah you're gonna see a whole lot of arcade classics coming to the NES helping build the NES Library track and field with a great game love playing this ER kid I do wish that they would have released a track and field controller for the NES much like they have in the arcade well much like they made for the Atari 2600 they can do it for the Atari but can't for the NES come on now well it still played pretty well on the NES I was a big fan of this game pretty close to the arcade version yeah still you know lots of different things you can choose from I was a big fan of this skeet shooting one that was kind of fun and a fun game to play two player if you're looking for that competitive uh mode with you and your friends or you and your brothers and sisters and all that yeah track and field always fun Burger Time Another arcade classic the first NES game I've ever played I literally remember playing this at a mall kiosk when they were trying to sell Nintendo Entertainment Systems you know just separately they have these displays set up and yeah you could you could play from a selection of games and the first game I played hey I recognized Burger time I'll check out burger time pretty difficult it wouldn't be so difficult if you had more pepper you'll get a few options for pepper where you can like you know you know freeze the enemies or where they're going it took me a while to play this game to realize that if you drop the burgers or items while uh enemy is on top of them it makes it go down further that's gonna help you out a ton but I do love Burger Time still fun today foreign [Music] I first saw as an arcade game as versus Castlevania at my local Red Robin in the back of the arcade there so when I saw this on the NES I was like oh my God it's Castlevania there I just thought it was an arcade game when I played in the arcade I thought it was an arcade game little did I know it was like the NES game so I was like oh it's the same exact game and that's exactly what I wanted and maybe that's what they were shooting for with those versus cabinets it's like hey it's the same in the arcade as it is at home well I mean with Castlevania you can't go wrong it was cool because it gave it that spooky vibe there weren't a whole lot of spooky Vibe games you know what I'm talking about games with monsters game with you know zombies and stuff like that you know games with public domain villains like Dracula like Frankenstein like a mummy yeah anybody can make those games and while Castlevania combined them all candidates popularity yeah 1987 believe it [Music] Dakari Warriors played okay for the NES it was more fun in the arcade because you had the little turn dial knob so you could like walk forward but shoot sideways and all that but in this game you just shoot the direction you're facing and it works pretty well for the most part now you can pivot your tank torrent so you can drive a certain direction and flip the torrent around just shoot in a different direction so you can kind of do it with the tank and enough tanks in this game that you can kind of almost always be in a tank sometimes it seems but akari Warriors was great more than anything because it was two players simultaneous so you and a friend could play at the same time without having to you know share the controller first you go then I go two-player alternating games that shouldn't even be a thing it honestly shouldn't yeah play two players at the same time or don't play two players at all that's my thing [Music] well three Silver Box games we had the Black Box games and then there's three silver ones the first one being Kid Icarus as much as I want to say that I love this game man I think it's more nostalgic than anything because the game is like it's kind of hard it's a whole lot of like heart grinding for items that you don't truly need to beat the game there's a lot going on for this game it was I think it was ahead of its time for sure but man they could have eased up on the difficulty just a smidge to help me out a little bit interesting that you scroll upwards instead of left to right although the later levels you do scroll left to right you know I'll just give it a New Perspective and introduce us to a new character that we will only see a few times compared to other Nintendo characters but when we saw him a old school fans like myself would be very proud to see him foreign Mighty bomb Jack as well well I mean I never to this day don't have a clue what I'm doing with Mighty bomb Jack it has these stages where you go through you can collect the bombs I guess you can open up these treasure chests what do they do I don't know it might be because I never had the manual and then in these final stage rooms with all the bombs I'm guessing I'm supposed to pick them up and you can pick them all up any way you want but if you pick them up in order of when they're being fused then maybe or more items drop or this thing floats around to turn the enemies into coins something like that I don't know I really should do my research to find out more because the game isn't terrible I mean I have fun when I play it I just don't have a clue what I'm doing half the time I just go around and not die and that's the premise for most NES games right just go around and don't die perfect foreign another arcade game coming to the NES confusingly not the same arcade game as you play in the arcade as you do on the NES this happened a few times where they would change the game just a little bit to give it more of a storyline maybe not so much of a storyline but they give it more Adventure so instead of it just being linear one two three four five in game whatever uh this game um you have an Overworld map and you know it's kind of a little bit open you go over here go over there explore the map why not the game well it's a little buggy it's a little glitchy but at the time we had what you had there were no DLC you know he just had to work with what you got and figure it out and the game is beatable I love watching speedrunners beat this game I love watching speedrunners glitch this game but rygar is a classic and I still love the music today [Music] well section Z just looked cool now there is an arcade game a section Z I never saw it I've never seen it in the arcade uh the arcade game is more linear this one kind of gives you a path to choose you can choose if you want to go up or down sometimes you skip a level sometimes you go back a level so there might be some memorization or maybe writing something down in a book saying okay you know first level I go here the second level I go there yeah whatever the case might be but it plays like a shooter and um the A and B buttons shoot uh in front of you as well as behind you they didn't sneak up on behind you so pretty fun game if you were playing this back in 1987. foreign I do love my puzzle Platformers Solomon's Key is well not necessarily one of those games but I I enjoy it I get it I appreciate it how about that um I'm not very good at it that's not the reason I don't care for this game but sometimes I like with load Runner I get a little confused and I shouldn't uh how the block building or block disintegration thing works and then I'm usually too busy trying to do something and then an enemy comes up and you know kicks me in the backside and I die but I remember seeing this a lot in magazines I remember people talking about this game pretty regularly um in back in 1987 when it was a thing it just looks like one of those kind of games maybe it was originally on dos or like some kind of computer or something maybe it was I don't know but I remember more hearing about Solomon's Key than actually seeing it and none of my friends had it that I remember so I didn't get a chance to play it until much later [Music] ever heard of Metroid well I mean we're still waiting for like a Metroid Prime 4 or something new I mean they had the other new metric game that came out kind of recently I suppose as of filming this video but this is the first one and this one was the one I was like oh my God you're in this huge area in space aliens you're in this you know you're in this suit they can get upgrades you can jump higher you can shoot farther Ice Beam wave beam you get to choose which beam you want at the time they can only have one or the other you couldn't have both just so much area to explore and everything that was half the fun for me was the exploration I mean they call it metroidvania for a reason I mean that's you know it's the exploration it's the you can go wherever you want but you might not be able to get there yet until you get a certain thing that you can make it so you can jump over that wall that you couldn't jump over before yeah I think it was stuff like that so it's fun to explore big old Maps love me some Metroid still love it today haven't beaten this game in a long time I should go through it again just for just for all time sake do not need to spend a whole lot of time talking about Legend of Zelda and the impact it's made adventure for the Atari 2600 was my favorite Atari game and then playing this game to me was basically adventure for the NES but so much more in depth this game get this yo seriously this game took me two literal years to beat this when I first played it no of course it was off and on and of course I was going to school at the time and I did other things I had other friends and I collected Garbage Pail Kids you know other things happening at the same time right and I couldn't imagine any one game that I would play consistently for two years straight you know going back to it going back to it until I finally beat it than this game now of course when you play it now you can go through it in couple hours you know two or three hours whatever but at the time when we didn't have guides we didn't have the internet all you had to do was make friends with people and share secrets I have friends today because of the Legend of Zelda to tell me where the seventh Palace was or to tell me you know you know how to defeat a certain boss or something like that Legend of Zelda is always gonna be one of my favorites forever big fan of arcanoid in the arcade and it played pretty well on the NES too in fact it looked similar enough for me you could get it with that controller it plays fine with the d-pad but those later levels I don't know if this game is beatable with a d-pad I think you have to have that special controller I was a big fan of breakout for the Atari in this game like that only it also drops upgrades every once in a while which made it even better and they just released a new arcanoid game just recently on the switch that I was playing recently so it brought me back to this I was like oh yeah yeah you got to go back to the classics man oh maybe you played Athena well first of all I apologize second of all I don't think it's as bad as most people say now to say that it's still not great but think about it even back then like you know you defeat an enemy the enemy drops an item you pick up and use the item that makes sense to me you're playing all these other games that are people are shooting at you you kill them and they drop their you can't pick up their gun and use it well in this game well they don't have guns but you kind of can you know you can pick up the club you can pick up you know upgrades like your helmet and your shield and stuff like that another game based on the arcade I never saw the arcade that didn't come out in America I'm not sure if you haven't played in the theater in a while I know it's notoriously one of the worst NES games according to a lot of people I I think there's still a little bit of a charm to this though I don't think it's as terrible as some but it's not great and the fact that Grimace is a villain well it's not really Grimace but you know it's something [Music] elevator action although it came out a few years earlier than the NES version uh still very fun still very good a very good Port of this game and I'm a huge fan of elevator action still love playing this game today I still love playing this NES version of this game today I had to go through the red doors to pick up the secret documents and make the Escape going all the way down using the elevators to your advantage hopefully you can crush the enemies in and of course little strategies on where to go and what to do and watch out for the other enemies and stuff like that I like that we can shoot the lights down and like make everything go dark for a little bit yeah it's a fun game with elevator action big fan of this game Legend of kage came out or Legend of cage as I think most of us called it back then kage meaning Shadow I believe and I was a huge fan even back then of those Hong Kong Action Martial Arts films and this reminded me a lot of that with like the address ridiculous you can jump over redwoods you can climb the trees and jump over them too you got your little sword you can just shoot your throwing stars and all that I mean kind of a simplistic key game for its time but I still had a lot of fun playing this game it's like only like four levels or something like that but then until it Loops again another game I think was in the arcade that I never saw in the arcade foreign 3D World Runner because it looked like space Harrier and it turns out it's not exactly like space here at all the only thing that they haven't similar is kind of that 3D View and there was the 3D option for this game too but instead of floating around you'd have to jump and you have to jump over these holes and watch out for those too I remember seeing it I remember I had to play it I'm glad I played it maybe you did too thank you oh boy all right so uh 1987 NES deadly Towers everything in my body wants to love this game why wouldn't I big Maps you can kind of go wherever you want you can shoot the enemies you can get your money to buy upgrades but man it does everything that makes you not want to play this game we all played it you stop all right moving on double dribble even though you didn't play sports games you wanted to play double dribble it's one of the better basketball games still is today for the NES and this the fact that it has all these other strategies that you can use I'm not very good at it here when I'm just capturing this footage but the first time I saw that frame by frame slam dunk my mind was blown double dribble when in doubt well even though it looked like a kids game it is far from a kid's game Sky Kid are you kidding me on this thing this was a lot of fun and it has that strategy it has that gameplay Factor where you know you can do better next time you're flying the opposite direction first of all uh shooting the other enemies you can kind of go up and down a little bit your other button is a little loop-de-loo and then you pick up the missile pick up the bomb drop it on the enemy base land and then you move on to the next stage but you keep on playing it because you keep on waiting to see what the next levels are going to be as the difficulty keeps amping up Sky Kid like I said looks like a kid's game it's not a kid's game a lot of difficult level on this one spelunker from broderbund I think it's just another brother but like I think the broader button games were like maybe originally computer games and then brought to the NES because I remember seeing this on something else before I played it I was like oh it's this game it's the game where you die if you fault three millimeters okay well uh still it's pretty cool and I still kind of had fun with uh with uh with splunker here and I just kind of go around the mines and shaft and grab the bombs and blow up stuff man not Ryan huge fan of spy hunter in the arcade Believe It or Not Spy Hunter came out in 1983. but it came out for the NES in 1987 and it played very well uh in my opinion it took me forever to realize you're not supposed to shoot all the cars you're only supposed to get rid of the enemy cars when your score starts flashing it's because you killed a civilian you're not supposed to do that spy car huge fan of James Bond so you drive up in the back of these things and get your weapon upgrades too you can get oil Slicks or smoke screens you know missiles to destroy the helicopters and stuff like that you cannot beat this game it isn't a high score Gator a lot of fun to be had with this game though check out Spy Hunter for sure it's always a cheap game to find at conventions and all that too Stinger which was confusing for a name but we didn't realize it at the time or I certainly didn't this was my introduction to Twin B no I was a big fan of Shooters at the time like gradius and stuff like that but when I saw a game like this where the enemies were unique it wasn't just other enemy ships it was things like donuts and turnips and toilet seats are we or whatever whatever it was uh the wacky and craziness and the comedy that you could have with a shooter that says hey you know what you can have a fun shooting game you can have a fun video game you don't have to take it seriously and we're just gonna have some fun with this that's what I loved about this game the most and I was happy to see that with this and happy to see that with like the Proteus games later on too foreign [Music] 's Punch-Out was the game everybody wanted this game still impresses me today there's still so much strategy with this game today it's a twitch favorite I play it defensively I know there's strategies you can like punch them a certain way then Dodge then you do this thing I don't know all those um I could learn all those I just like to play it at my own pace though I play a defense and that's the other thing about this game is you can either play it like offensively where you just keep on going for broke and hopefully you'll land a punch or play defensively where you wait for them to strike move and Dodge and then get them and know the strategies and then the different characters in this game oh man such a fun game still fun today [Music] we already had Kid Icarus and Metroid and rad Racer rounds off the third of the Silver Box games and rad Racer it's a decent racing game had that 3D element it came with 3D glasses I never used I've had them but I never bothered using them did anyone ever play as that the F1 like the Formula One racer actually I only played as the red car anyway and I thought it was kind of fun that you could choose the soundtrack too when you button there's three different songs you can choose from yeah that's kind of fun and squaresoft the people who brought us Final Fantasy beta racing game hey can we get a can we get a new rad Racer that might be kind of fun Jaws may have been many people's introduction to LJ Yen here's the thing though Jaws is actually a pretty decent game once you know how to play it once you know how to play it it's a pretty decent game in fact speedrunners play this game they can probably beat it in you know like four minutes it seems like but really just grab the shells you can get your upgrades and get your items get the get the shark tracker and all that it's actually kind of a fun game once you get into it I'm a big fan of Jaws and if you're just like I'm not gonna play Jaws that's LJ in I mean give it another chance foreign [Music] a game I wanted to play because I loved this game in the arcade and the NES Port done very well yeah of course you're gonna have the ingrish in this one but the radical ninja had a spiky hair ninja kid you twirl your sword around which I thought was super cool that was your weapon of attack you don't slice you don't Dash you don't slash you twirl your sword like a baton I guess and the bosses were pretty creative too I like that when a game would have like you know fun creative bosses too I love me some kid Nikki and if you didn't know I've done videos on it in the past there is a kid Nikki two and three in Japan for the famicom three ain't great but kid Nikki 2 is really really fun if you like hey Nicky one you like that one that says that's that's another video for another time oh and then we go into Super Pitfall now Pitfall famously one of the best Atari games of all time super Pitfall notoriously one of the worst NES games of all time the very first thing most people do go down the ladder that happens every time okay now I'll give it to Pitfall huge level huge level to explore a huge area to explore but man alive is you know just you know what let's move on we have The Goonies too where's The Goonies one well Goonies came out for the famicom and there was a versus Goonies in the arcade that's what I played first I was a big fan of those and still am now Goonies 2 plays more like a metroidvania in fact it could have been called Goonies Vania or metro metro goonie I don't know big area to explore open the doors get the items you're trying to rescue the kids eventually saving a mermaid what made a great plot for a Goonies 2 movie but instead We Got The Goonies 2 video game that suits me fine I haven't played this game in a while and I would love to play through this game I've only beaten it once playing from start to finish back in the day uh would love to do it again sometime soon it's on my it's on my bucket list of games to beat again [Music] Top Gun as I've joked before Top Gun is the game that everybody had in their collection and nobody bought it it just showed up one day you're just like oh hi August I'll play Top Gun here's Top Gun laying around here it's actually a pretty decent game it was a pretty fun shooting game flying game you fly around you shoot other enemies and stuff like that too 1987 a huge year for Top Gun in fact 1987. uh Top Gun was the first commercially available VHS tape because before that if you wanted to like if you want to buy Star Wars on VHS you're paying 100 bucks a Top Gun sold for something like 25 bucks which was very affordable for a commercial VHS tape at the time kind of Paving that way a lot of people don't care for the landing sequence in Top Gun I'm here to tell you it's doable just do what it says to do and cross your fingers and hope for the best this time I don't always luck out and if you were asking for a Christmas present in 1987 heading into December had a couple of options the first one being Mega Man not Mega Man 2 not Mega Man 3 not Mega Man X not Mega Man cross-dimension not Mega Man Alpha 694321 this is Mega Man the first one because at the time it was the only one in this IP I'm telling you Mega Man how it looks in this one how he looked in all of them is this the same one why would you why would you change the graphics how the games like oh let's let's make them more shaded let's make that dude don't touch it it's fine great music great level design when you beat the boss you can use their item against other bosses what a brilliant idea what a brilliant idea the first Mega Man because they're still kind of doing the arcade thing looking for a high score you have a point system in this you don't have to worry about it though and it's just fun to see you get to choose where you want to go and you know hope for the best of everything Man Mega Man is fantastic and it certainly paved the way for a lot of more Mega Man games coming out later and I'm all for it also coming out in the month of December in 1987 as Wizards and warriors I've talked about this game several times huge fan of this game you can beat it the first time you play it unlimited continues this game made by Rare love the animation love the music Big levels on each stage and everything too you pick up different Keys those keys will open up that color of door that color of treasure chest you get so much treasure you have to build up your treasure so you can make it to the boss and defeat the boss and move on to the next stage and everything like that and love this game and it's amazing and it's wonderful and you're wonderful and I thank you for watching make sure you're subscribed for more videos always come out in the near future and if you like this style of video I've done so many others like it too for other systems too NES Genesis even turbo Graphics 16 and Game Boy and stuff like that too man make it happen binge all those other episodes and we have more years of more consoles coming in the very near future
