Our Remanufactured Engine Showed Up For The 1968 Pontiac Firebird! Iola Car Show Part 2

[Music] oh just spilled all my coffee ah shoot a little hot a little hot yeah yeah morning guys morning well welcome back to vice grip garage and day two of the 1968 Pontiac Firebird build live right here at the Iola car show yesterday we had a really good day the engine and transmission are out today the goal is something has to go back in with our tkx five-speed transmission it's a kit we got from Silver sport transmission but there's a lot of questions in the air what engine are we gonna use the one I've got we potentially might have a long block crate from O'Reilly Auto Parts we could potentially find something here I don't know intro music [Music] you know [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] so day two here at Iowa we're in the circus tent back with the firebird I was hoping an engine would be in here this morning but no still have a huge mess on the floor spent most of the morning just cleaning up I got 700 pounds of sawdust everywhere and all that stuff was able to sell the old transmission I actually gave it to a swap meet guy kind of hung out with him a little bit last night might get a deal on him anyway we'll see uh but we got everything else cleaned up just going through the transmission boxes right now laying out all the parts I think where I'm going to start is trying to twist my body into the small first gen I gotta hang the pedals we need that third pedal start figuring out the master cylinder all of that it's got to have juice pipes and hydraulic stuff and oil to run the bearing clutch disc plate unit coupler the Hymer and then hopefully we'll have an engine later today we'll bolt up those Transmissions and drop it in [Music] well I'm finally I've been avoiding some reason opening the parts boxes to said transmission five speed I'm finally digging into it we're potentially still waiting on this crate motor I got through O'Reilly so I'm going through all the parts right now trying to come up with a plan I've never used this kit so it's all going to be new to me and of course we're doing it just like most of you at Homewood just rolling around in your driveway you know so I'm just laying everything out looking at what I got gonna have to go through the constructions and uh probably heed those a little bit but this should have everything you got the bell housing you got the transmission you got the shifter you're gonna have the master cylinder it's a hydraulic clutch has all the hardware everything like that even has uh you know flywheel bolts all that stuff so I'm just going to get it laid out here [Music] [Music] [Music] I just I'm I'm not good at reading instructions or English for that matter actually there's some drawings in here but so far nothing that I have on the car looks like it should apparently for the instructions which are very detailed so that's you know that's fine minor minor stuff really um they have really good instructions arrows and pictures technically I'm just gonna go by the pictures I think I'm gonna stop reading and just start looking at pictures okay let's do that [Music] how do I get in here can we have a step later ah right here basically I'm just I just started cut that's what's happening located the hole for the clutch rod every wire that's been added to this car for the last few years has run through it I'm trying to deal with that currently on a homemade brake distribution blocks in the way by the homemade power steering mines that are in the way [Music] under this Dash is insane I've never seen I think it's been hot wired 15 times or something there's really no other way to explain it bread ties we got bread ties under here don't need that [Music] drunk what is this who's this now why is that twist hat and twist tie house wiring nut going the 75 feet of wire over here that goes to this is that why does this exist I don't know that's getting cut okay look at that [Music] I got some yellow the other wires oh they're going looks like it used to go to a column or something this this is scotch locked to a fuse [Music] what the devil I think this car is going to need a whole new wiring harness this is just some expert cobblemanship let's take care of that oh you need that nope don't know what this wire is it yellow one I can go away I don't think I'm going to be able to even get underneath to see where the pedals go is that normal I don't know what to do should I take the seat out pretty gross I might have to take the seat out so I can lay in there this boat doesn't want to come out there you go just bend it out of the way [Music] oh ah still works yeah well it's really clean in here that's good yeah yeah yeah yeah [Music] oh all right 50 years of regrets right there [Music] oh boy we don't have a vacuum do we thank you it's on the floor kinda [Music] 15 hours later got it huh so this I think was the original pedal but I need the third one you know for this to work over here so now I got to do that and reverse her great giant sasquatches are not supposed to fit under the dash of a fire turkey telling you it I'm telling you it right now [Music] great news just got a call from the local O'Reilly store the crate motor has made it here way ahead of schedule I don't know how they pulled it off but they did that's great news now this old engine it needs re it needs Rings it needs valve seals you know it just needs to be rebuilt we're going to be donating it to a shop class and my friend Brian is going to be taking it back with him and he's going to drop that off for us I just got to get the pulleys couple few things out of this probably pull the lightning whirler and we'll load that up get it out of the way I got some folks here at the Iola show they're nice enough they're going to take my cherry picker throw this in their truck run all the way to O'Reilly's for me grab that engine and bring it back because well I got parts and stuff everywhere I got to keep working on the snowbird here they should have a back craft the show is huge the traffic's backed up probably two three hours we'll have a crate motor back here we can start fitting things back together Fired Up Now excited [Music] [Applause] [Music] move [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Cuts pedals in they're just swinging in there uh now I'm trying to get this master cylindray in and uh the fitment is very tight with this gigantic brake booster thing um and I have to drill three holes but in order to drill those holes I believe I have to remove the brake master cylinder and booster which I just spent 40 minutes putting the pin in to the pedals upside down the dash and that also mean I'd have to disconnect brake lines and then bleed the brakes awesome so I really don't know what's happening at this juncture seeing if I could tape this in maybe or if there's like a way to use zip ties maybe I'm not sure but this needs to be lined up perfectly with the clutch pedal if it's offset either direction it's going to wear this out very very quickly so this needs to be in a true straight line with the pedal so I might need some help here have someone hold this and I gotta go inside and maybe I could drill the holes from the inside um because there's you know this sandwich is on the firewall that's what I'm saying so huh something else foreign [Music] [Music] that's where I've been for like three hours but look we got a third pedal things are happening yep and someone already currently cut a holes for oh wow it's already modified yep going back to manual okay now got holes drilled a few more cuts we're very close to getting the master cylinder hooked up and then this rod goes in connects to the third pedal and then we can actually Mount the reservoir run the line there put some juice in it and then we can actually start working on transmission stuff this is just all ancillary we haven't even got the guts right here it's awesome things are happening [Music] foreign [Music] yes it's a little dented that's okay so this is a crate motor directly from a Riley Auto Parts you can get long blocks short blocks this one's semi-assembled this one is 290 horsepower and 300 some foot pounds of the torques you know it's already got the carburetor on it we got a lightning whirler in there this is a little damaged but we'll fix that no problem vortec heads so we could do something in the future make a little bit more horse out of it but these come with a nice warranty and everything right out of the box so pretty excited to get this in that car this is not how they're normally packaged I think we we got a good deal on a scratch and denter wow it's got a brawler on it that's cool we're gonna need a digital fuel pump this one is blocked off and the rod is missing so we'll figure something out I might be able to overnight nope it's too late maybe let me check might be a wolverine at a pump you guys think Holly Blue Pump what should we do blue red don't know undecided okay pump two hundred dollars holy comes with the regulator I ain't gonna have the fittings though is the problem man alive I can't believe they're out much money now uh put it on the most dangerous one all right got it yeah I think I drilled my own hole too yeah there you go yeah the valve covers mucked up rotor got snapped yep I don't know what this side looks like probably more of the same but I think I could put a block of wood on here or something and just [Music] well I got other junks we could put one she got the one piece yeah [Music] all right downage all right you're on the hook this should have a roller cam so at least I don't have to worry about that [Music] oh we got new speculators kind of more like ceramic powder all right [Music] [Music] oh this one's wow [Music] so we one's not like the other well we just received our engine it's gonna work probably it's got a it's a little dinged up but we'll that's no problem this is the warrior intake I already wanted actually in fact we bought one for this engine just in case now I can return that we've got a brawler car if I could return the other carb these are really great they bolt on they usually run right out of the box water pump looks the same so we could just swap the pulleys and all the accessorize should maybe work we got a one piece rear main this is a two piece which requires a different flywheel but silver sport was nice enough to overnight air first am delivery another flywheel so I got that so I think we're back on track to get this five speed mounted up to this engine and we'll be able to drop this oh that's a little loose don't worry about that uh we'll be able to drop this in this one's gonna get donated to a school that could tear it apart we're going to rob the water neck lightning wheeler pulleys a couple plugs doodads bell housing bolts uh the starter which I need to confirm is right to its configuration and then that goes away we can get this one in right now I've got to do go to a signing for about an hour hour and a half we got a line of awesome folks been waiting out in the sun I got to get them in here in the shade as soon as possible somebody got cleaned up started scribbling and meeting some awesome people oh okay where's my oh there it is [Music] that's incredible take a picture quick even the we the people on the valve covers block valve red and blue seat it's got the handles the glitter wheel this is impressive it's got all the right stickers on it yeah yeah it's very cool it's a lot of hard work young man thank you it's beautiful thank you [Music] thank you oh my God we got space elators we got counterweights now that's new oh man that's a big chunk of Steel right there so that's our flywheel for a one piece rear main seal [Music] we've got to try to fit this on I'm just going to test fit it make sure everything's good there and then start looking there might be some counterweights we have to put in potentially some spacers because again we changed from a two-piece remain seal to a one piece rear main seal but this has got to get done we've got to measure everything up make sure the clutch the thrust bearing all of that's going to work before we can continue pretty much anything at this point okay [Music] this should be in the car with the transmission right now but I'm struggling putting a flywheel on hey that's not fitting that's not good I don't know why [Music] that's great that's really good not a very important part [Music] [Music] things are going really good new parts on new parts and new parts don't like new parts I don't know this seems like we need a new part [Music] so anyway on this episode we put a Firebird without an engine transmission on trailer oh boy we're in a pickle there's no way I gotta Waller that out it's supposed to be made for One Piece [Music] it was a dead blow and everything I just I can't even get it on the crank everything's going real well if this flywheel doesn't work we've got no transmission no transmission no running car I've got like an hour today and six hours tomorrow five hours tomorrow this thing to be running so we are between two boats and rock and soft spot or whatever we're saying is it's not good so I think I'm gonna get a drill Out start watering holes because flywheels don't need to be perfectly balanced no they do definitely but maybe not to do a burnout inside a circumstance [Music] things [Music] I might be able to draw that in with bolts probably not [Music] this flywheel is neutral balance so it doesn't have any weight offset for internal or external balanced engines so depending on your configuration and this one's set up for you know they have instructions for Ford Mopar whatever but this is a Chevy flywheel so depending on uh you know whether it's a 305 to 350 or a 383 or 400 or for example a big block 454 or 502 or whatever there's different weights and you can calibrate this specifically for your engine so for us we're going with this smallest weight it's got the radius edges and we're putting it in what they call position a with some never come off juice and now that is ready to install [Music] oh maybe changed my mind we're going uh EV because that's the flywheel bolts I got so we're gonna have to switch this up a little bit put some more batteries in here I wonder if like 30 superstars put the firebird down the road I don't know I thought no no [Music] it's good on the thrust bearing it's going to beat the shot out of your crankshaft at the screen door don't worry about all the stuff in there [Music] that's not good they ain't really wanting to they're not sit lights real good that one is this one is that ain't good man good at all cross thread is better than no thread oh for Pete's sake [Music] just be happening [Music] I guess we'll just cross thread it Nature's Loch bite [Music] I mean three of the six that's probably gonna hang in there I'm thinking that one's definitely that's rune for life [Music] [Music] I didn't bring a torque wrench but if you just do this you're torquing it essentially right [Music] okay well I'm tired of this so now that we've forced this on it's basically hermetically sealed I'm gonna go take out the old cross member quick put in the new cross member for the kit and then I've got a really big surprise for you guys you have to stick around we've got private access to a it's not really a junkyard it's a collection of cars was not open to the public it's tucked back into the trees up here and I think we're going to get to go walk through there and check out some of these cars and it's big enough you can see it from the Google webs NASA satellites stick around for that [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] right and there's a lot of pockets like this is beautiful there's a 51 Chevy and a 55 Chevy and Cadillacs there's a Buick back here just gorgeous Vehicles we're going to walk through here kind of explore it a little bit and Jessica might give me a jacket maybe we can buy something probably not but we'll try I'm gonna get injured definitely [Music] okay well you saved your life thank you that was unexpected so uh [Music] don't hold your body weight on trees around here I guess huh I was trying to get to this Ford Wagon back here oh this thing is cool [Music] oh [Music] I don't know if I some horse drawn implements here side seat it's just crazy to think how many thousands of hours someone sat here and operated this thing [Music] at some point in time yelling at horses all day oh my gosh 100 degree Heat we had a bubble top Dino dynamatics 88 two-door this thing is pretty sweet I love the color you just wonder why these get parked I don't know why but this thing is a cream puff you want to crack the door oh my gosh it's a drag radial oh my goodness of Dash on this is so cool jolly good cream soda oh my goodness I feel like a sweet old lady on this she went downtown I thought her name was Edith hey grab that there's a medicine bottle nice knowing you good luck [Laughter] wow it's a vitamin hormone formula okay all right we're we're putting it together all right the light cream soda and and horse vitamins mineral vitamin hormone formula boom sealed it's like a tomb look at this I wish they still styled cars like this they had the front visors and some like the pickups were kind of the fewer higher echelon this is what A guy ran they didn't have the heated grips and all that this had a little windshield back then but these were classy machines uh this is the rare Cloverleaf wheel there's an RPO option called Flat and they didn't work very good they didn't sell them very often they're unique nonetheless that's a good swap meet a little trinket [Music] that's a nice rig [Music] yeah it was a diesel you're right huh [Music] [Music] I gotta let's look yeah it's a GMC it's an actual coal 67 is a plate straight six probably a 292 or something this is a gem foreign well we're going to keep digging through this this is amazing there's so many awesome vehicles in here we're probably going to keep walking through here for a little bit but don't forget tomorrow by the end of the day we have to have a running 68 Firebird with a random crate motor we got from O'Reilly's and a five speed we got to have them do this and they gotta go back in the car
