OSPlays: HADES (ouch)

hello everybody welcome to the live stream it's osp we are playing hades uh today i am joined by red hello and cyan i have a blanket cyan is winning today so cozy uh get on science level coz combo unbelievable uh so yeah today we are gonna be playing a little bit of hades this is gonna be rough because hades is a game that requires a lot of concentration or you die and even when you do it give it a lot of concentration you will still die so uh we're gonna we're gonna do some yeah it's it's like quitters talk luckily there is no escape you are trapped in hell forever until you get out so we're going to excuse you yeah yeah um uh the the house thereof so we're we're fairly early in the game um for those of you who are new to the thing don't want the camera to wake up for those of you who are new to the game um we'll we'll bring you up to speed uh not a lot has happened so far we're just gonna go uh do a run and uh try to bust on out of here that's her dad that's surprising indigo says our audio is perfect so wow so no one else say otherwise because indigo gave us the okay yeah yeah we're taking the win you're no longer allowed to uh complain about the audio it's been decided that uh we we've nailed it on the first try i can't wait for the frame rate to break though that's gonna be fun uh yeah i am everything's all set uh this is where we sleep it's kind of adorable it is also very funny that whenever there is a chair or anything on which you could theoretically rest if you push the button uh zag race is like no i can't do that i couldn't possibly i've got places to be things to do ways to die i'm a busy boy this is the mirror where we get our upgrades uh we just look at ourselves a bunch and the power of our vanity makes us stronger oh man this low latency is great i can almost immediately see what you're talking about yeah i'm so excited i'll be seeing you die on like a second delay yeah my cousin's in the chat so this is our our friend skelly who exists for us to beat him up oh yeah the old living training dummy thing yeah living really hilarious at one point zagreus is like do you want to fight back and scale he's like no it's contractually mandated that you have to beat me up it's like oh yeah i really want to punch the boss's kid which is funny because everyone else in hades has no problem with that currently i'm running uh a shield builds uh but we can do sword if you want to shoot uh so no he's only unlocked two weapons so far it's the shield and the sword sword the sword you start with i'm saving up for the the spear because the spear looks like a kick's ass you can do a you can do a spear but like i feel like with the shield you have like the perfect like you can do some long range shots yeah but you also have like a good melee weapon whereas like the sword you can only melee like we can go the boom boom knock him around yeah let's go you have to check the display case check the display case all right we got a thing yeah we got achilles number because we gave him a flask with a thing yay equipped take 20 uh percent less damage from the front but take 10 percent more damage from the back hilarious oh no how far should we be reading into that i mean it's just like a caesar thing or no i mean it's it's just it's achilles heels it's the achilles heel thing i know come on you said you got his number i thought we were okay all right no sorry that's an embarrassing start no you're battle buddies totally just buddies who share attention in battle amigos cyan can you tell the story from what happened last weekend we went to give your sister some cake yes she was like hey blue i have a question for you um was socrates gay and i'm like yes that is that is a valid interpretation of the task uh the text you are correct oh no oh hey it's aphrodite hi there in the name of hayden i must be a mess what are you gonna try to flirt with the god are you not no hello not really into it oh no where is my pants gone no pants are allowed when you speak to aphrodite okay so the way that this works is that when we talk to the gods and they try to like schmooze with us and and get on our good side um they will offer us boons uh that uh so far in the game uh will help our attack our special attack um our our cast or our dash so this one here is an epic ability so i'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna be epic let's uh let's do the heartbreak strike attack deals more damage and inflicts weak uh oh it makes them sad yeah in the power to break hearts why not a different cousin of mine posted her cat and her cat has like a little you can't lick yourself oh i can look it's got like a little gem oh that's so cute it's forehead it's like an all-black cat with like a little white belly and a little white dot right in the center of its forehead though that's like adorable a gem utterly adorable meanwhile uh claire's taking a little nap over there that sounds like the kind of cat design that they would use if like a character got turned into a cat yes and they were trying yeah exactly um some quick context for the way this game works this is a roguelite which means that it is a game with uh random or procedural generation so each run that you do to escape will be different from the last and that's a big like point of having the game works that there's a randomness aspect so you have to get good rather than rely on like memorizing the level layout or anything like that oh my god she's adorable that cat is adorable right but then there's also there's persistent progression so every time you complete a run you gain benefits that will help you in the next one so you're not starting from scratch each time you're constantly getting stronger i kind of like the idea that the reason all the rooms get rearranged is that like while you're floating in the blood pool slowly reconstituting they're just like all right maybe this will keep the whole out for longer there is some lore that kind of implies like there's someone who put a curse on the underworld to make it so that like was it curse i thought hades just did this or yeah like some of haiti's design notes are like hey make it that the room's changing around so my idiot's son can't get out yeah no i like to think that like like the other people that work in hades are like maybe you should just let your son uh leave and hades himself is like maybe you're fired shut up now go rearrange those rooms before he gets back you see like some guy pulling a lever it's just a slot machine of random room configuration spinning around or like you're like i don't know shade number three million in 78 working in the cafeteria and then there's a rumbling and the doors shift and you're like oh zag didn't make it all right that's a shame people are like taking bets and oh my god no he didn't make it out yeah so now you see our shield has lightning on it yeah the aesthetic of this game is just so incredibly well done it's just it's impressive because it's dripping with color all the way through but it's so consistent it doesn't feel like it's a it's just a visual mess like a lot of games that are very colorful and tend to be it's so well done you can tell they put a lot of care into how this game works on on every single level small dev teams man it's the future i i really like that the visual designers in this game like they were like we're gonna make this aesthetic and we're gonna make everyone really sexy yes exactly one of the design notes i recall reading an interview where it's like the design notes or just make everyone hot yeah well yes um but like i don't know if you guys saw the storyboard notes for the trailer that got released there's this bit where zag like pushes like kind of pushes blood out of his hair and the storyboard notes are like he does it sexily what do we have here like i respect it oh hey you must have had a run in with the lovely aphrodite am i right or am i right there zag but i have just the thing to go with her wine uh drunken dash strong drink trippy shot using a fountain restores all heart could be useful that could be very useful and then we get damage afterwards so if we run into a fountain that's great uh we have the ability to spend some of our money to buy um basically renovations to the underworld um that can help so so far we have bought a fountain um that can be one of the rooms that we randomly stumble into uh which is is very useful so this boot that we just got from diane is that if we stumble onto one of the fountains we built um we get full health back and then some extra extra damage it's also fun because you see like the little yellow bars some of them have like i guess it's like a shield where you have to break that in order to be able to hit them they also have like no explanation for what these things are they're just like forbes all right aha all right do we want hurt and lightning oh but this looks like a challenge see the little skull on the front or um another challenge but fairies no aries you're right the simon's blue let's let's see what happens when we get it two and one we we may die but that's a risk i'm willing to take is it really a risk if it's the core gameplay well like it says like challenge of the gods and you have to pick one or the other oh yeah whenever there's a competition we want i want to pick aphrodite the choice is there really does she get butt oh right she gets buttered if you don't pick her yes that's why i'm like wait no no no there was a whole book about this and a sequel due to popular demand yeah yeah so you choose one and piss off the other that's hilarious oh god what a what a beautiful mechanic that it just it's so true to how the the story goes very accurate it's an apology i did not sit here to be insulted by my own nephew that's the only reason you have nephews they think you're cool and they also will insult you if you're not ready for that you're not ready to be an uncle it'd be funny if zeus took away his boon for this fight it's like well you don't need this oh i'm gonna die yeah probably i mean you are trying to fight zeus yeah statistically yeah yeah yeah there we go oh i got different you forgot about that i did forget about that maybe stop stepping up i like how there's no need for like game balance exactly because every time you die you keep all the stuff that you got that made you stronger so even if you die after getting like one thing it's incremental progress so they can't just have zeus fill the arena with lightning bolts you yeah that's great sweet okay so it's a little risk reward do you want to piss off one god for the chance to get two moons that's very funny i did use my one uh revive my my death uh defy give all these gifts oh no oh ah what happened uh hades is about to uh throw some at me yeah hell yeah gets angry and then literally you're not supposed to defeat these guys you're just supposed to survive for 45 seconds oh wait these are the things shows up aren't they uh not not yet i think you have to be in the next area for that all right well have fun surviving that i'm going to be sitting here sipping tea i actually really like banana bread oh yeah it's sad it's delicious yeah i guess like there's other things there's like pumpkin bread and stuff five more seconds you can do it you can do it just spam whatever button makes you do damage there there we go no negative consequences god everything's so pretty i like the idea that like hades is just sitting on his desk doing paperwork occasionally glancing over the security camera and pushing the this button to just like spoot out more ghosts just by you time to ruin my son's day it's like i said you were grounded young man doomstone oh that sounds pleasant that's what the kids call it when you give a really bad high oh good time it's like a boomer joke better than that she got like a really bad kitty high from it it felt so bad oh like i didn't realize that there were like cause cat that's a plant and i guess like all things are plants if you look hard enough so that's better rocks oh okay fine let's okay go on we found out when we get catnip from this one place she's totally fine and chill but catnip from some other places she's not so fine and chill uh indigo actually actually sent uh blue a birthday present which was actually cleo's birthday present that she tried to eat through the box to get to the cat and then other times she's like no i don't really care so oh yeah get the epic one positive outlook take less damage while at 40 percent or below hilarious okay oh what's this examined lost souls with nowhere left to turn and congregate in deepest tartarus creepy were they fused together with the earth itself everything is either a plant or is eventually going to become a rock if you think about it with a large enough hammer and long enough time anything can be a rock sure to quote the church remember man you are dust and to dust you shall return yeah baby when this game was announced i i got the vibe that it was going to be kind of like like a devil may cry style kind of edgy you know just like the way zagreus was designed i was like oh i know exactly what this character is going to be and i was so wrong and i love it what this game is so goofy you thought well i mean guy with one red eye was gonna be yes yes i thought the guy with one red eye who sexily whipped blood out of his hair in the trailer was gonna be edgy excuse me for assuming how dare you technological conclusions and instead he's just this goofy-ass himbo who's just fighting his dad's co-workers like oh hey zack how's it going he's like nothing personal but don't know i've just i've never been so happy to have a trope subverted like that time to break the pottery you don't get anything from breaking the pottery you get satisfaction some potter ghost who's just been like making pretty vases to liven up the underworld it's just like at last my masterwork now i can pass into lethe and rest in peace and just like is there coins in this sick a burrito smashing piggy banks uh is the modern version of just destroying pottery excuse me i have to time out jesus for spamming in chat yep smart all right bye jesus christ your presence i was trying to figure out how to do that from uh mobile and i couldn't figure it out it's all good i got it i do have to also keep approving sometimes the things that have the word zag in it just get flagged also anything with the word himbo oh no what why is himmo flag i don't know but i've been trying to go through and like show them when they come by me also uh we've passed 4 000 concurrent viewers i'm sorry what they're here they're here for the himbo normally we max out at 3 000 so this is pretty dope how you guys doing chat loves a bad boy i don't think you can be a bad boy if you're a hippo like isn't the whole point of the himbo is that they're good natured yeah the good naturedness is a fundamental component of the himbo's carry yeah that's why i like it cronk is a hindo because he's generally good nature whereas like i'm trying to think of someone who's like generally like large and bulky and that gaston is not a himbo because gaston is not a hamburger he's too malevolent to be a himba and he's he's like possessive in a weird way he he's got the kind of negative qualities that a himbo does not have the brain space for exactly not that gaston has a lot of brain space but no no but you know gaston has at least one brain cell dedicated to disrespecting women whereas a himbo at all times has a brain cell dedicated to respecting women that's a fundamental difference sorry i needed blue to open a bottle for me because i have both of my thumb braces on which makes it really hard to open anything 4 000 concurrent viewers hot damn well i hope you're all having a lovely day yeah you want school yeah you can go to the yeah yeah let's go to cairo and buy some uh some health yeah look at that yeah you can talk to karan and he's just like just uh honestly looks like you're selling is that it come to help me out caron is loaded in gold very true to his characterization as being greedy oh that's like how they subtitle that yeah it's like so unnecessary bless up for this game for automatically subtitling everything oh yeah yes well i mean it's kind of got like a visual novel style so subtitles are kind of necessary yeah but then it's just beautifully voice acted on top of it yes the one thing i wish is that i wish that these characters weren't all british that's like come on guys dude what did you greek i mean they had speaking well yeah there's also not a greek language uh there is not a greek language localization option which as someone trying to learn basic greek is infuriating all right haiti's team if you're listening and i know you are i guarantee you they're not come on we need the greek localization it could be one of these 4 000 people here yeah we don't know listening to us discuss whether or not zagreus is a limbo if anyone on the hades team is here excellent job uh yeah absolutely fantastic no no uh is the guy going to kick your ass what's this what's a subversion of a subversion because this just reverts him to being like kind of uh uh an edge lord again oh come on he's allowed to be a little bit edgy also why does she only have one wing like is this like a mythological thing or does she no idea it's not i to my knowledge um i think it's just like a design choice all right i forgot the as a dash hell i mean come on this is just how youtube learn really obvious attempt to get blue to learn greek i'm trying to learn greek faster [Laughter] it's not going well because uh the only like basic greek knowledge i have is like the kind of stuff like you learn in science yeah i'm just really bad at all languages english included but i learned that one early enough that people can't tell as much but like i mean half of my english is just like using hand signals which has only gotten simultaneously better and worse since i started learning asl because now i know what hand symbols to use but most other people don't understand what i'm signing so like my brain will like forget a word and i'll just start like signing it and blue will be like are you trying to say that it's nice i'm like yep that's what i'm trying to say honestly that's really cool i i've tried to learn asl before because i think that would be a very useful skill to have i'd be able to communicate over long distances even if it was noisy and stuff like that i just suck at it i'm bad at languages that's fair i i had learned a little bit growing up and then i so i found a like death center near me who does asl lessons and obviously they were in person at one point now they're all be assumed i did have to take a couple months off because of chemistry but i'll be starting again in april and i'm looking forward to it it's very fun it's also nice to just have some time where there's not sound that your brain has to process processing sound is very tiring oh yeah let's talk to achilles achilles my man thanks for the bracers i did like how hades was like that's right kerberos he was a very bad boy how dare he disturb your nap and just goes back to his paperwork it's like love you too dad it's like kerberos is the kid and uh zach is the dog yeah exactly so we talk about cleo we're going to put him in in timeout for now because he's been very naughty but you'll be able to play with him later i love things that like youtube like otto decides it's like oh that's not okay like they're like this person is speaking in a different language i'm like they're asking how you are like edges open oh my god you fixed it up adorns one of the stoic walls within the lounging area is that achilles i think that's achilles oh yeah that looks like achilles a duty bound gorgon oh wow i don't want to talk over the dialogue because there is single-handedly stopped it oh she's so cute i like how they were like how do we handle medusa in the underworld disembodied head sounds good okay but what do we do beyond that she's adorable yes brilliant she looks like she just wants to like make you cookies it's like i think i think they've been doing floating medusa heads since like castlevania won so that design choice is old but making her adorable is new is this like a librarian oh yeah oh you can get more nectar for achilles nice i know i want to keep these keys because i need to get the thing oh statue statue there was a statue down that looked like it had multiple arms i was curious about it um oh yes oh yeah these are kind of everywhere on the uh periphery of levels hmm do you think it's supposed to be a heck of hungry or oh that's probably exactly what it is yeah smart it only seems to have one head but you know yeah hundred eyes and a hundred hands is a little tough oh yeah knicks was gone for a second can't really see me oh hell yeah go hang out with no uh with a with a scary mom as opposed to other moms i don't know the full extent yeah persephone is not here i don't know if she ever shows up oh buddy okay chet don't tell him okay he does to be fair blue has done a very good job avoiding spoilers for this game i've done a really good job of avoiding spoilers for this game you only watched the trailer when we bought the game yes oh chad's pointing out that she's made dusa that's funny oh [Music] did you get the nectar to give to achilles i gave that to him on the last run you can get yeah but you could buy another one oh i want to use the keys on the spear i like the spear i'm a spear and in addition to being a shield i can do better uh you can only do the top one you don't have enough for any of the other ones if you want to wait for greater reflex you can but oh yeah no that would be great yeah i'll get greater reflex next time can i nap no can poor boy take a sleep i'll sleep when i'm dead you're already dead bad news zag god everything in this game is aggressively pretty it's so funny i would love to have been on the like the pitch meetings for the character portrayals in this game because they're all just flawless also i just want to point out that like they made this game without crunch like no crunch time everything in here is beautiful and they made it on the schedule they wanted it to and they took the time they needed and they didn't like overwork anybody and that's so incredible like this just proves that you can make incredibly good content without you know running your team into the ground and producing a glitchy half-finished unlock your spear unlock my spear but no exactly uh new weapon the eternal spear uh okay striker all right jesus if you're not gonna behave in the chat you're gonna get muted for realsies is that what you want to release to spin very directional but that's pretty great you can also get the um bow oh can i yeah you have enough right yeah probably because it's not very good the heart seeker fire oh it's only ranged uh hold x to or press x to volley fire oh so if i time it right there's a thing oh okay interesting no not not yours not a fan of that bow at all you're not a ranger you're a paladin i love the dash attack though um but yeah no the way that hades was made was was no crunch it came out in early access like two years ago and a lot of the core mechanics of the game were in place obviously there was a lot of tweaking that went into it but like the skeleton of the game had already been built by that point and then they were able to spend two years just like iterating on it developing it out uh building out the systems and the consequences making more complexity and just polishing it to a mirror shine uh whereas a lot of games are basically unplayable until about two months before release or in the case of cyberpunk two months after uh boom ah i was gonna say um red someone in the comments mentioned that you can definitely uh mute jesus but if you do he'll unmute himself in three days i'm ready ah well three days i can handle it gives you three days of leeway yeah baby um yeah so when a lot of other games were built under crunch even a lot of the ones that are celebrated this year like you know last of us you know whatever um uh i'm trying to think one of the games came out last year um animal crossing was specifically delayed to avoid undue crunch which was great um what is do crunch um there is a certain amount of expectation that in the last like less than a month before a game is finished there will be some long days and possibly a couple weekends to make a release date but that is only ever permissible over a very short span of time most of the time that that crunch is done it's like oh you know i want to get this thing done i'm gonna i'm gonna take a long week i'm gonna mark that i'm gonna get those overtime hours and it's fine however the problem the video game industry is that crunch basically becomes a prolonged work commitment that is implicitly or explicitly forced upon the employees so in the case of cyberpunk they've been working on crunch conditions working like upwards of 60 hour weeks for basically a year before the game came out because they were crunching to meet the original release date last year and then they delayed it to march and then they delayed it to fall and that entire time the team was working anywhere from 60 to 100 hour or more weeks um uh long nights weekends uh people were sleeping in the offices just regularly uh and that becomes unsustainable there's a certain amount of of like you know oh you know i'm gonna work really hard this next week to do this thing and get it great and then you take a little bit of a break after that that's fine people can work on their own schedules but that kind of work pressure is becoming only more common in the games industry in the aaa space and the result is either you destroy your employees and then you get you know a game that's workable on time maybe but you just ruined an entire team or you get what happens to the last of us in cyberpunk where the team is so worn down that they are worse at their jobs and it takes them more time to accomplish something so one of the reports about and i'm sorry we'll play in a second i just want to talk about this because i was like wait have you not been doing anything i know i've been doing screen's not changing i i've been trying to talk because i can either talk or play so right now i'm talking someone someone said they're like uh actually the stream can't see the whole screen i can assure you based on seeing the screen and seeing the screen on my phone you can okay there's nothing else i think there's like a little cut off on the edge there's a little cut off on the sides unfortunately um crunch it's a little bit but um yeah just like the wrist of that guy yeah it is fine um now where was i uh you're talking about crunch and why it's bad yeah that is their job okay so yeah so the team on the last of us there was a report from i want to say bloomberg that basically said um consensus among some of the staff was that a more senior team that was not like turned over because the previous teams left from because of the crunch was too much could have put out the last of us two a year earlier and you know the cyberpunk delays that had to keep getting delayed because as they went on the team got worse so targets that would have made sense a year ago were now unfeasible and then when they were like okay i think we can do this in three months and three months passes and it's like oh no we can't we need more time and then you know that kind of thing happens so hades is not only a great game in its own right but it's a beacon of light and what a game can actually you know still look like and how it can still be productive and you know profitable if you let your employees do good work and still make sure that they work hard but that they don't work long because that's a very nuanced difference and they need time to recover yeah like yeah you know uh working on a game or working on any project it takes energy and and brain power and stuff you can't just do it for as long as you can physically go you know i mean any artist or writer knows this like you can sit down to write and even if you can physically type a bunch like x words a minute that doesn't mean if you sit down for five hours you have you know x times 60 times 60 uh sorry no x times 60 times however many hours you wrote oh words whatever um you don't get that many words on the paper because you need to know what those words are and you need to pull those out of your brain and for that your brain needs to be working and after you do a lot of work you have to relax and you know even if you're just doing like busy work or or something where you know exactly what you have to do you just have to do it a bunch repetitively like in parts of game design that's true it's like i just need to make this texture and i just need to write this dialogue like even then if you're worn out you're not gonna be creating well because you need time to rest and if you aren't resting your brain's not recovering and you're trying to pull from a dry well and that's not good that won't produce good work and it'll be really bad for you in the long run like that's that's how you get artistic burnout artistic burnout does not happen if you give yourself time to rest between working and once you burn out it takes you a lot longer to recover than it would have if you'd just taken the rest yeah so like if you're if you're just doing a project on your own time if you're managing yourself you know don't overwork yourself too much and you you can afford to crunch like for a couple days but then you've got to give yourself time to recover if you're working for some like massive mega corp that will replace you you the minute you're like you you flag a little bit like in in the case of the a lot of the senior uh and mid-level naughty dog team that was working on on games like uncharted but then left so that the last of us team um was working with a lot of new talent that wasn't experienced because a lot of the older people had left um i'm not sure it was exactly that clean of a narrative um i think it's probably a little more nuanced in it but i can't recall it off the top of my head usually but yeah um you know it's i understand the the need for crunch in small amounts i mean i i'm gonna be the last person to tell people that they shouldn't overwork themselves to get done because that's that's like what i do um but i do it in small bursts and then i take time to like nap and eat food and watch shitty movies and live tweet them and i do the kinds of things that that restore my creative well because i guess that's the way i think about it it's like you have an energy reserve of creativity that lets you work on stuff and once it's depleted it's gone like you can do stuff that doesn't require creativity but you'll not do it as well uh and you know there's no there's no hacking that it recharges on its own time sometimes you need to like do things that recharge it in my experience like sometimes you know watching movies or shows or reading books can recharge it seeing other people's creative works i know for some people playing games recharges it sometimes you just need a net yeah sometimes you just need a nap i i have to keep reminding myself of that because i already think i sleep too much slash not enough whatever i do i sleep different but you know it's like like yesterday i slept for like 10 hours it was bonkers that never happened and then i had to take a nap in the evening anyway because i was like i'm so tired but i'm not being productive i should do this other thing but i'm tired and i was like maybe i'll just take a nap and stop complaining and i took an hour and a half nap and then i had energy to do other stuff what were the odds it's like even if it doesn't make sense or fit the schedule you know your body and brain have needs and it's probably good to listen to them sorry yeah get the snacks i'll get sick well well no because this this increases my my total health because that would have just brought me back up to full and i was only snack i mean i was only two points under i don't think i've spent 50 questions snacks over life any day fine day to you as well there mate anyway yeah tldr uh massive gaming megacorps should probably stop uh burning out entire crews worth of game game developers probably yeah it's like if the game doesn't even end up good then it wasn't even worth it and if you have to crunch the odds are that it usually won't i mean if you have to crunch for like months at a time especially and yeah that's the difference between making a push and doing crunch because really uh mike bithell um indie game designer most recently made a solitary conspiracy which very fun game said that crunch is the later result of an earlier failure to schedule time properly that if a team is good at scheduling they will never have to crunch because they will understand what their capacity is they will understand what their limitations are and they'll understand how long things take and if they have to crunch later on it's because they misjudged one of those things and missed every possible opportunity to fix that earlier well it's also like video games and like also like film and tv are an odd place where like you don't wait for the thing to be done to release you decide when it's gonna be released and finish it to be done on that release date whereas like you know i mean i work vaguely in the pharmaceutical sphere yeah there are deadlines for things and sometimes we have to push things to be done but if the stuff's not done it's not done it's like you don't release half the data set because the data set wasn't done like you finish it and then you release it where so you might be crunching to get it done but if it's not done it's not done whereas i feel like video games they're like okay well it needs to be done by the state that we set like two years ago so finish it that's why um one thing that i was really impressed by was uh ubisoft is doing a remake of the principals in the sands of time really exciting awesome game so happy to see that i i never had the pleasure of playing it myself earlier on but i'm like i'm so hyped to play the prince of persia game they delayed it out of last year no supposed to be early this year they delayed it into the spring and then like last week they delayed it again but they didn't give a new release date which is exactly how they should do it it's like hey yeah we're gonna need some more time we'll let you know when it's ready and that's absolutely the way to do that kind of thing blue someone says i think it's with the spear if you hold the attack button to charge an attack and then dash it does a huge shot yeah i i just learned that after the last fight i'm gonna start using that more yeah but yeah i mean you know you could use the analogy of like running a marathon uh you know you can't sprint to the finish line of a marathon you will die if you can even pull it off soldiers and marathon am i a joke to you he needs to be like ah first time you know the other analogy is like um in in olden days uh when you had to get from point a to point b uh frequently what you would do is you would ride a horse but horses actually aren't very good in the endurance department humans are uh better at the endurance thing than horses are uh if you set a human and a horse on a marathon the human will win uh so what this means is that the horse would get exhausted and often what they would do is like they would stop for the night they would essentially swap out the horse for a new horse like they'd leave the horse to rest for like a week two weeks and then they'd get a new horse and just ride this fresh horse for as far as it could go uh this is great if you're trying to get from point a to point b as quickly as possible uh this is not great if you are the horse and in the in the analogy we're using in the game development thing essentially they're treating their teams like horses they they you know run them as as hard and for as long as they can and then when they give up and crash they drop them and they get a new team but with the addition of like well the new team needs to be trained and taught and they're not very experienced and often they're new and kind of like you know fresh-faced newcomers to the field because the older people know their worth and don't like being crunched and thus won't take the job so yeah it's just a recipe for disaster and it could be solved by just taking a little more time and like actually treating the workers like people rather than you know a resource that will make the game that will make you a billion dollars which please capitalism why would we treat workers like people of course how silly of me no i know yeah no crunch bad haiti is good baby's good crunch bad why in this screen is he like you dressed differently zagreus yeah it's just a different angle on him yeah he's always wearing a hat shirt it's just that usually he's turned to the right this time he's trying to left everything looks different i think it's just the lighting um yeah and the the hat thing it sometimes looks like it's kind of flaming but it's not here yeah i think it's just you know different because like at least on here he's wearing mostly red and it looks more like gradient on there and also yeah that's so special it's an exclamation point is that good or bad probably bad everything is bad highness i mean like there aren't many friendly things hey must look like i'm slacking off with the old boulder here but i was just getting the back of my feet curious sisters don't often leave me be how like that that's part of the game's charm where it's like finally i've advanced to level two oh ah everything's on fire hades is like oh pretty rough boy but you want to come back and chill out grateful that while i was living he was merciful to me down here however i must say i rarely feel his influence all of us good shots you know what i like about this i i feel like every bit of information they have about accuracy is like drawn from the the tiny tiny details we have from the actual mythology so it's like i've heard that there are little mythology gags in the rest of the game too where it's like if you talk to orpheus uh or or die in isis dionysus is like hey wouldn't it be cool if we made people think we were the same god that would be hilarious right uh and like little hades like there's there's a lot of kind of um eponyms that get used in uh greek mythology that like refer to gods as versions of other gods um so hades is actually fairly regularly referred to as the zeus of the underworld um which is interesting because that could mean a lot of different things but like i i'm pretty sure that one of the uh i don't know has enough kids for them i think it's more about the be in the top banana situation rather than the rather than the sleeping with everything that moves stuff but um i i think and it's been a while since i researched this so i don't remember for sure but i'm pretty sure one of the things where it's like is this a thing about zagreus is this a reference to him is that there's like there was a line referencing like hades and also like baby hades babies let me just real subtly google something see if i can find that um probably not though just google baby hades and see what comes up oh yeah that'll get me exactly chimera jerky that's pretty funny or cyclops jerky okay what it might be is that escalus says that zagreus is either haiti's son or hades himself so calling him little hades is a way to kind of bridge that gap okay chiron or um i don't really have anything to spend at chirons so then don't go to town haiti or aries you might be going to haiti's we'll find out i really hate that you can just walk into the fire you're recognize that it is closed and if it doesn't recognize that it's closed it won't heat up smart but annoying so every time i kept opening it and then taping it again my hair was stuck either in like a screw or the tape and i'm like whoa is me and now it's just been getting stuck on my velcro the cons of having hair that is decently long yeah when i was in middle school uh we had these metal chairs with these oh yeah every time my hair would get stuck in it and it was like ah i used to pretty consistently just my hair was pretty much always braided for school for that exact reason like i only really stopped wearing my hair almost always in a braid like midway through college or a ponytail i would sometimes do a ponytail but yeah i just don't have the patience for that but recently i've discovered uh an excellent life hack where i can actually tie my hair into a knot and it works as well yes i do that all the time when i'm in lab and i forget a hair tie i just tie it in like just an regular youtube content is like well produced and professional and stuff and the streams are just like all the swear words we know i mean come on i think there's nothing wrong with that there's drama but i do occasionally vicariously look at it because i'm like woof glad that's not me you know how it is um endless toilets but i think one of them was like in the gaming youtube sphere and then the next day it was in the makeup youtube sphere um it was like like on day one a youtuber like became the first youtuber to lose more than like 100 000 subscribers in a day and then the next day james charles lost a million subscribers in a day wow so it was just like wow um but yeah i know very little about it just that there was drama that i don't care about yeah i only know because i have younger cousins uh specifically younger female cousins who are into that kind of space they're like oh my gosh blue does youtube right i'm like yeah like so does he like have an opinion i'm like i can we'll see but yeah apparently physical therapy is good for you and it will make everything stop hurting as much hopefully they all still think i'm headed to join them on olympus no offense physical therapists out there you're great you do great work i've just done physical therapy enough times before that i'm like yeah i mean it's it's not fun i've only i only did it once when i broke my clavicle because like breaking your clavicle up like everything in your shoulder so they were like well when two weeks were done and they were like okay the bone set now you got to immediately start doing stretches with this and i was like oh tough one oh wait oh yeah you don't have five yet i was gonna say that that would be cool uh yeah now for see the problem with me is it's like it's a chronic condition that doesn't really go away it's not like something you can physical therapy away away so like yeah like when my sister tore her acl you know that has lasting impacts and but when she did physical therapy it was mostly like okay you can't walk and after therapy you should be able to walk so like there's like an end goal but when it's like a chronic condition there's not really an end goal so to speak so it gets like i always feel bad for the therapist because you know they have to ask you like are things feeling better today i'm like no no yeah it wouldn't it would be weirder if it did yeah they're like does anything feel worse i'm like not really they're like yay i'm like i don't know yeah yeah i i don't know man i mean that's just like that takes some willpower like just getting through it on my end i was like once i once i do this for six weeks my shoulder will be back to about 95 and i'll be fine and i can stop doing it and like that was really what like pushed me through it because it wasn't fun but i don't know man doing it to mitigate things rather than fixing it yeah it's fine i'll see because you know now that we have like a better idea because like the last time i did physical therapy was probably about a little over a year ago probably almost a year and a half at this point because it was pre-covered right yeah yeah but i was working at my current job so it can't have been two years ago so you know about a year and a half um and like it was still kind of new so they were just like let's see what we can do so maybe now that we have like i guess the uh the therapist was like okay we need to figure out how much mobility this joint should have so we're going to see how much mobility your other shoulder has and so they kind of like took it and they just kind of twisted it they kind of kept twisting and then they were like did you do gymnastics or something and i was like yeah i did gymnastics like oh okay because i guess that makes your shoulders way more flexible yeah because they were kind of like bending it all the way around like sure this doesn't hurt and i'm like no what are you doing yeah so that's the other thing i have i can't do anything super mobility intensive because you know right a lot of physical therapy is yeah it is increasing like flexibility and mobility of a joint and for me they're explicitly like no double stretch problem yeah no big stretch only small stretch and i'm like small stretch like yes it i mean yeah really what this means is that physical therapists are very impressive because they have the therapists are so good so it's like okay for you we need to make your joint really stretchy for you we have to very carefully not do exactly that exactly i'm just like you do such good work i interesting question of when did greek go from ancient to modern i learned a very weird truth about ancient greek which is that apparently and i told red about this um apparently based on some research in the 70s uh and 80s current understanding of the shift between ancient modern greek is that greek became phonetically recognizably modern in the like late hellenistic early roman period which is free black just pre-bible so like yeah like during the writing of the the new testament in in in um it basically was like this huge shift in greek pronunciation from ancient where uh all of the um all of the vowels have their own unique sounds um and it's it's very uh emphasized and accented to modern greek where most vowels just make an e sound everything is e oh you can do the oh i was gonna say you could do the one for 15 coins that gives you more of the stuff that you need later oh yeah sure yeah i was buying it all but yeah no so that was a really cool thing yeah i i asked um just because you know we barely know what english sounded like in like the 1600s yeah like figuring out like original shakespearean was kind of a process like we figured it out but like it took a while yeah but like yeah so i'm like how do we know what ancient greeks sounded like and apparently there were like pronunciation guides like his ancient greek grammarians were a thing and we have some stuff from like you know the books that the kind of books that have been stored in alexandria of like here's how you speak greek properly um romans did it a lot too and there are some imperial era ones i'm getting beat up in this fight yeah uh there's some because i'm trying to talk i'm trying to be interesting uh there's some like imperial era um grammar manuals that gave us an indication of what things would have sounded like and we can tell based on like recreating like rhyme schemes of what rhymes and what doesn't and we can we can see in the text that there are some uh rhymes that indicate a much more modern style of pronunciation uh even as early as like the imperial period and the the byzantine period so grammatically a lot of greek change during the byzantine period there was a lot of time spent on on just like you know finding language and very like slow methodical adoption but after uh the conquest of alexander greek changed a lot really fast because the language was simplified from its original like attic aeolian um peloponnesian dialects and such into uh coiny which was the like greek for everybody it's the universal accessible like jump in point of greek um and we had people from beyond just like greece and and western anatolia like all of anatolia all of the levant well into persia um like far far into central asia down into egypt speaking greek and that all kind of impacted the way that or affected impact it is not technically actually a verb that affected the way that that greek was pronounced such that a huge phonetic shift took place in a very short span of time which was then codified with the writing of the new testament uh in that version of coiny and then given that byzantines were like you know a christian kingdom um that remains the like fundamental text of the it was like the language yeah so we're like greek had a lot of exclamation point uh yeah uh greek had a lot of um like anchor texts in um in in homer uh in thucydides in in plato and in in the tragedies and stuff um the new anchor text was the the coin a bible which is really really cool because you think like modern greek would have been a much more modern invention imperial early imperial yeah which is impressive because like modern english i mean in 1 000 ish we had like old english which is utterly incomprehensible yeah yeah in english i had a teacher once who like had on the side specialized in uh old english and at one point he read i believe an excerpt from the canterbury tales as they were originally pronounced and it was bananas i couldn't understand any of that purple mobile money yeah okay that's fine um but yeah no so that was like an interesting thing that we were discussing i don't know i've always found linguistics very interesting yeah like especially the evolution of languages over time it's not something i've ever really had a chance to like study in depth but i always find it very very cool yeah so yeah it does make it difficult because the only greek blue has done previously you knew like kitchen greek yeah ancient greek from times uh spent in greece around greek family owners but uh you and then you studied ancient greek yeah so there are some differences like for example there's no breath marks in modern greek you said yep in ancient greek uh there are breath marks the beginning of every word to indicate whether it's hard or soft breathing so like uh the word like hades is really just spelled 80s and there is a breathing mark in ancient greek that would tell you whether to put a sound in front of it making it hate it in modern greek the breath marks are not there the pronunciation is implied so like the sun yes yes as opposed to like helios yeah that explains several things actually hades is sometimes spelled everything in it is a lot yeah it's like the first time i ever watched overwatch like if you don't know exactly what's happening it's just impossible i still don't know what's happening i'm time that oh my god a lot of this is possible maybe it's got a kurosawa mode it's mostly just like there's a lot of flashing yeah yeah that's fairly common for games like this i mean they have to signify that you're doing an attack somehow and you know big glowy sword beams are the easiest way to do that visually this version of artemis seems very nice she's pretty chill she's just like oh that would suck if i were in your position i'll try to help you out she's got nothing against you artemis basically never interacts with hades in any capacity so they don't really have any reason to hold grudges yeah oh i gotta say i had a thing from one of the gods in the last round that i never used forgot about that huh um when i was researching artemis and apollo uh a while back it's interesting it's like together they cover almost everything that mattered to actual greek society like like apollo is this god of civilization and domesticated animals and apollo is the goddess of the wilderness and non-damas artemis is the goddess of the wilderness and non-domesticated animals um yeah well together they cover all of civilization and everything outside of it exactly it's it's sorry guys it's the set and the not set you know so together they cover the whole thing it's uh it's interesting i i don't know that there's some weird stuff there it's like the book what they teach you in harvard
