hello well it's nearly New Year so it's time to look back on the old year and look forward to the new year and all things like that but all I can think about a scratch disks I don't know I think something went horribly wrong with my thought process over the years I love lemonade anyway where was I oh yes scratch disks now the thing about video games is they have a very short shelf life like milk only completely different and what I mean is video games released a year later it's gone you can't find it in the shops in fact usually six months later it's gone you can't buy it anymore you might find it in a few online places and that's your lot unless it sells a load of copies then it will get a re-release at a cheaper price or as a game of the year edition which includes all the overpriced DLC for three movies of course I mean DVDs you can buy pretty much any film ever released um retail no problems easy peasy but if you want old video games you go secondhand or you go without and of course the thing about buying secondhand games is they come on discs and the thing about discs are wait for it they scratch now I've never worked out why second-hand DVDs and games are almost always scratched it surely all you have to do is remove the disc from its case put it in your device play it take it out of device put it back in the case no scratches but no it just doesn't happen which is very very irritating and in fact to prove my point I have here for second hand games the cheapest I can find em they worked at two pounds each and basically I've not opened them and I am betting they are going to have some pretty hefty scratches on shall we have a look not enough one to not work don't get me wrong but you know just weird surface scratches you think why aren't people taking care of their discs let's start with get fit with Mel not entirely sure what mill is possibly some kind of alien I am Mel from space Channel seven you will bear fo r me o as mill B rent for four pounds keep for five nights yep let's Waiting Murphy did would even I feel bad about that one right anyway Mel B black bean has come out of her room yeah that's blue yes what's she doing she's stretching a giant giraffe's tongue while standing on it this is weird and it will requires a Kinect so I imagine this has probably been played once by the one person in England who has a living room big enough to set up a bloody Kinect right let's have a look I didn't did a oh no that's fairly clean actually I don't know if you can see from there I hope so if not these videos gonna be rubbish yeah that's almost entirely new no scratches at all you see that's good that's good as you'd probably have to play the game and you know we don't want to actually have to do that anyways fire over there and have a look at Raven squad which is some sort of crappy first-person shooter and mentally crappy from what I hear what's this disk likes has probably been in a couple of times I would have thought no that is as new again there's a couple of bits of fluff on it and a partial fingerprint I'll send that to CSI for analysis but yep that's not been touched really they probably played it once thought oh my god I spent 20 quid on this and then jumped off a cliff I know I would have the Golden Compass the official video game of the failed movie Luke is Daniel Craig with the beard and a Ian McKellen polar bear with armor on and look there is the titular golden compass which if I recall is neither golden nor a compass in fact wasn't the book originally called Northern Lights but they inexplicably changed it for a foreign market I don't know I'm so confused let's just look at the disc as this is vaguely a children's game I'm expecting a lot of scratches because you know kids aren't going to be looking after things as much and you yes yeah we've got some nice surfacey ones here you know picking those up some sort of big scratches on the top of there what I say big there's nothing major you know it run perfectly will mold surface scratches is what I'm described that as I was selling it to an idiot and rise of the Argonauts which I was intrigued by as I thought this only came out for the PC so my good friends at code masters who made dizzy the egg many years ago a man may choose his fate but destiny chooses a hero but has this been played more than once I suspect not actually I think I've picked bad games oh no hang on oh this is finger print II very finger print II you could probably get somebody's DNA from this quite easily yeah that's a bit of a mess actually that will come in handy for demonstration in a moment in fact that's a better example than the one I was going to use you can stay there and glare at us I wish I was in that Zack Snyder fell shut up you weren't right so scratches the first thing is how do they happen how why this has confused me are people too stupid to put them back in cases and surely even if you don't put them back in a case immediately you're going to put some of vaguely safe well an answer to this was given to me by a friend who said my DVDs are scratched and I said we'll destroy yourself and everything you care about then he thought I was a bit of an overreaction and instead decided to explain to me why basically his wife and rather than putting the DVDs back in the cases will often lead them to one side and even on a relatively clean surface all you have to do shuffle him a little bit push him a little bit and he said they get quite hefty surface scratches and I'm now going to test this theory out with this copy of EverQuest 2 which I bought for two pounds thinking wow look 30 days two pounds I'll be a bit of a laugh you can you know run around and see what the game world is like I'm up for that for two quid got it home discovered it had gone free-to-play anyway the point is I have never taken these discs out of here because I just installed it from the internet then wished I hadn't because I didn't see a single other person playing at the whole time yep that is absolutely pristine baby that is as clean as a DVD gets so I'm going to put it on a wealth of standard table ething and scratch it around a bit watch okay that's probably simulated many hours of scratching you wouldn't get that much in real life I would hope and from that subtle movement hmm yes scratch is quite nasty ones actually all over the surface yep didn't take much at all really just a little bit of movement and disky Scratchy so there we are that appears to be where scratches come from I thought they came from Mars shows what I know so anyway how do we get rid of them well your first thing you want to do with a crapped up disc is clean it and for that our friends at 99p stores come in with this device and this little thing you spray with yes it's a disk cleaner Poundland do one as well but it's not as good it's not as well made it doesn't seem to sort of do the rotation thing as well and you will be surprised the difference this can make to a disc often what look like scratches and damage I actually just horrible filthy dirts and allow me to demonstrate through this copy of riser auginaush from earlier because that was finger print City all you got to do is put it in spray some guff on it mmm guffy lock it up spin it around a few times actually might be worth checking the rollers at this point to make sure nobody has clarity but stapling because that probably would scratching my badly open it up and if well ah look at that it's a little bit damp but all the fingerprints are gone revealing a couple of very light surface scratches that I couldn't see before due to fingerprint coverage so yeah that's excellent I cannot recommend one of these enough they're 99 pence for crying out loud and this bottle of disk cleaning solution seems to be good for about 40 million different cleans and you will get things that didn't quite work working with those it is very good let me put this away like a good boy so I'm not hypocrite there we are now what if it has got deep scratches and won't actually play well I don't actually come across these things very often they're always got these surface scratches on there we seem to work alright that is until I bought this copy over the Karate Kid from Amazon usually second-hand DVDs from Amazon are pretty damn ace you'll use often say things in the description like you know like surface scratches to get in is almost completely new not so much with this one they claimed it worked it bloody don't hear from The Karate Kid incidentally is the famous scene of course where daniel-san and mr. Miyagi kiss on a beach whilst a kung fu trophies in the background right come on then look at this bloody thing I was not impressed The Karate Kid Karate Kid Lim Armand de verte the moment of truth I never knew the Karate Kid had a subtitle in the foreign languages hmm it's also prohibited from the location what does that mean not like to rent it no idea and now have a look at this oh yeah big chunks out of that there's the main culprit there's also a lot of scratches down here and I don't know if you can see this probably not actually but there are two weird points here that looks like it's been bitten by a dog or something would be my guess and basically this doesn't work I have an old pioneer DVD writer in my PC and it will read any disc almost in fact you could probably get a DVD crush it up into little pieces feed it to a cat get the cat to vomit in the disc slot and it would still read the movie from it but it will not read this DVD players just spit it out and my right kind of has an attempt and then just gives up and says it's scratched mate so say we desperately want to see The Karate Kid right now and we don't want to watch that one with Will Smith's son in the remake well we need to somehow fix these scratches the old fashioned way was with some syrup all plastic polish which is I believe a German product relatively difficult to get over here and got it from Amazon actually if I recall and it's a plastic polish which basically means it's a chemical that eats plastic and you put a little bit on a soft cloth and you rub it on the scratches and it slowly eats through the scratch surface blah blah blah and eventually your CDs should work and thus course you do it too much and then it will go right through it all so it takes a lot of time and patience to thin I'm far too old to have any more ideas also get this is an honorable mention for you scratch killer repair and polish and it's like a pound from somewhere but it wasn't pound land an electrical shop if I remember comes in a semi DVD style case with big things and some bits of sandpaper and what appears to just be something like a zero Pole with a very small tube the end of which is broken off that's not good hmm some tissues there are inexplicably DVD shapes they don't have to be the shape of a DVD to work on a DVD but this quite handy thing that will hold your discs solid for you there you are so it doesn't move around while you do all this stuff on it but this is boring we want an automatic machine to do it you know like the ones in game station and that well here's a story for you the ones they have in game station where they charge you one pound fifty to clean a DVD are very very effective when they big abrasive disc take off the first layer of plastic will pretty much leave it looking and working like new whoever those machines do cost around two thousand pounds I haven't told there is a home sort of version a little one you can have in your house it costs around a hundred but that was still far too much money so I went to Maplin and bought the ProCare compact disk surface scratch repair er ultimate protection and repair for digital media features professional repair for all compact discs CDs game disc DVD CDR cd-rw s will not do GD roms from Dreamcast immediately catches fire ez six minutes automatic restoration environmental friendly why how environmental friend eggs means of throwing away less DVDs is that there thought I don't know anyway let's get this out and have a look this reminds me slightly of those old skip doctor things you used to get I did use one of those once it literally told chunks off the surface of the game and ruined it the ps2 game becoming what it was now anyway here is the device it literally just looked like a portable CD player for many years ago but through the magic of abrasion and destruction can apparently make our karate kid' discs work again at least that is today's quest right I'm going to set this up and get it going which will take a while and be very boring so here is kind of an edited highlights thing right it's plugged in which is magical 12 volt DC connection you open it up for the pink abrasive pads dew point at the top put the disc in it obviously flip it on down push it in and press power Ready Steady Go this takes about a minute and a half jump cut it is done that actually took three minutes I don't know why I have the amount of time in my head right open er up puing and remove the disc what does it look like now about the same but with very light weird round marks all over it and if you can see those probably cared if I hold it about there not sure you can they are visible and they could I it's certainly think it look like new by the time this is finished but it might work which would be nice right part two involves removing these off they go and putting in these lovely buffer pads and then I coins the instructions here put two drops of the fluid on the right hand one Oh God is spraying everywhere the doctor said I wouldn't have that problem anymore right drop there drop there right one drop is bigger than the other but we'll let that off I have to find some way of getting rid of that blob in the middle jump cut right there we go that's stopped it falling into the mechanism and destroying the universe now we put this back on and run the machine again tell you what smells like another jump cut okay tits done Open Sesame and what does it look like kind of the same only more scratched hmm but the naked eye is not the same as the reading laser so I'm going to do is probably wipe off the residue from the bloody cleaning solution that I don't particularly want that in my DVD recorder there we are as good as new and extremely scratchy if you have no concept of what the word new means right at the moment of truth then I'm going to go and stick it in my DVD writer and see if it now works back in a sec nope still doesn't work great well that was a waste of time what are the instructions say to do if the results of disk repairing aren't satisfactory repeat the procedure or replace the sand and repair pads we're not replacing the pads we'll use them once plus I haven't got any replacements and well blimey ham shall we try again then ah six minutes here we go brilliant been through twice still doesn't work in the slightest well from this entirely unscientific test we can only assume that this disk is perhaps too scratched for repair by cheap means or maybe this machine just isn't very good I imagine the truth lies somewhere between these two parts basically this will only fix very slightly over-the-hill discs but you're not generally going to find they're generally either going to work or be rather knackered I imagine if we did take this to game station and pay them one pound fifty to stick it in their magical expensive mechanical machine of dreams it probably would work but as the discs cost considerably less than one pounds fifty I am unlikely to do that I can of course attack it with the zero Pole and a cloth that might do it again not going to do that and to be honest I think the best recourse would probably be to get back to the person who sold enjoy doesn't work it's too scratched give me back my one pound twenty however that's not what's going to happen I'll tell you what's going to happen this is going to go back in its case and I'm going to keep it and over the years if I come across any other cheap discs repairing stuff we shall see if any of them have the power to make Ralph Macchio go and kick a kid in the face on our TV screens again whilst Pat Murr rita cheers him on well there we go in conclusion lemonade you
