by the end of the program and our host as he is every tuesday the aforementioned father wade menezes how are you i'm doing great jack brushing up on my latin ah you know we had uh kicked off the month of may the a marian month uh with some some uh conversation about our blessed mother last week and during this year of saint joseph we're going to talk a little bit about her earthly spouse this week that's right exactly especially the fact that the vatican had added recently seven invocations to the litany of saint joseph and i'm going to talk about those for a little bit and right after that i want to give our listeners a little catechesis if you will on the seven joys and seven sorrows of saint joseph but first of all the vatican's divine worship office announced on saturday may 1st 2021 the the feast of saint joseph the worker the addition of seven new invocations or titles to the litany of saint joseph bringing the number of titles of saint joseph himself from 25 to 32. the seven invocations in latin are kustos radim torres survey christie minister salutis full chipen fulchiman excuse me in difficulty tatibuz patrone exulum patrone afflictorum and patrone pauperum now i want to give those in english huh these new invocations of saint joseph can be translated respectively as the following guardian of the redeemer servant of christ minister of salvation support in difficulties there's a big one right there an important one i think patron of refugees another important one patron of the afflicted and patron of the poor seven beautiful new invocations or seven new beautiful titles added to the litany of saint joseph the congregation for divine worship and the discipline of the sacraments wrote a letter to the presidents of bishops conferences on may first the feast of saint joseph the worker explaining the inclusion of the new invocations and the letter said this quote on the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of saint joseph as patron of the universal church the holy father pope francis published the apostolic letter patrice corday with a father's heart with the aim to increase our love for this great saint to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal the congregation said in that letter in this light it added it appeared opportune to update the litany in honor of saint joseph first approved by the apostolic sea in 1909 under pope saint pius xi by integrating seven new invocations or titles drawn from what drawn from interventions of various popes who have reflected on different aspects of the important figure of saint joseph patron of the universal church and the life of the church pope francis approved these seven new editions these titles are invocations to the litany of saint joseph and again they are guardian of the redeemer servant of christ minister of salvation support in difficulties patron of refugees patron of the afflicted and patron of the poor the bishops conferences will be responsible for the translation and publication of the updated litany of saint joseph in their local languages the divine worship congregation stated this and also bishops conferences can also add according to their own prudential judgment uh they can introduce other invocations by which saint joseph may be honored in their own particular countries and territories and of course a litany jack is a type of repetitive petitionary prayer we could say often invoking the intercession of the saints or the virgin mary under different titles that have been approved officially by the church but not vain repetition that's that's right that's exactly right now a little bit about the the seven sorrows and the seven joys of saint joseph it's it's a very ancient um a pietistic uh prayer uh where we go through sacred scripture and in the 13 times joseph is mentioned in the gospels we can draw on these 14 aspects of his life seven of them joyful we could say seven of them sorrowful and so i want to comb through the seven sorrows first and then go through the seven joys but then i'm going to repeat them side by side and see how the first sorrow is remedied by the first joy how the second sorrow is remedied by the second joy etc etc so first i'm just going to go through them each of the two categories in and of themselves but then we're going to go through them in a linear fashion and line up all 14 1 to 1 2 to 2 3 to 3 because we can see the joys of saint joseph remedying his sorrows if i could put it that way so first of all the seven sorrows of saint joseph his doubts wonder in awe regarding mary's pregnancy number two his pain at the lowly poverty of jesus's birthplace number three watching the circumcision and witnessing jesus first blood spilled for us number four listening to the painful prophetic message from simeon number five having to take the holy family into exile in egypt number six the hard trip back from egypt to nazareth and number seven the loss of the child jesus for three days and now the seven joys of saint joseph the angel's message of joy regarding the sacred incarnation number two the wise men and the angels adore the infant jesus number three having the honor of naming jesus number four knowing the effects of jesus's redemptive work number five the idols of egypt falling at jesus feet during the holy family's flight into egypt number six uh holy family life with jesus and mary and number seven finding jesus in the temple after his being lost for three days so now i want to i want to reread these 14 total aspects of joseph's life from the gospels the seven sorrows and the seven joys but we're going to line them up side by side to see how each sorrow is remedied by each joy listen to this this is beautiful this is just a beautiful beautiful devotion and i might add jack that we're we're just under one month away now from being halfway through the year of saint joseph proclaimed by pope francis to run from december 8 the immaculate conception solemnity of saint joseph's spouse the blessed virgin december 8th of 2020 through december 8 of 2021 so june 8th come up in just a few weeks we'll mark the halfway point of this wonderful year of saint joseph so it's a nice time to recall these these aspects of joseph's life that we learn about in the gospels themselves huh so i'm going to say the first sorrow then the first joy the second sorrow then the second joy etc so we can see how each sorrow is remedied by the joy number one his doubts wonder in awe regarding mary's pregnancy and yet the angel's message of joy to saint joseph of the sacred incarnation telling him not to be afraid number two joseph's pain at the lowly poverty of jesus's birthplace and yet joseph witnessing the wise men and the angels adoring the infant christ the third sorrow the circumcision of jesus and his first blood spilt for us and joseph sorrow at witnessing that and yet having the honor of naming jesus at the time of the circumcision number four listening to the painful prophetic message from simeon and yet knowing the effects of jesus redemptive work also told by simeon to joseph and mary number five the fifth sorrow having to take the holy family into exile in egypt and yet the fifth joy the idols of egypt falling at jesus's feet huh and we see that especially in tobit 14 verses 6 and 7 and isaiah 19 verse 1 foretold from the old testament number six the hard trip back from egypt to nazareth and number six the the sixth joy of saint joseph the holy family's life of jesus mary and joseph in the home at nazareth holy family life right and number seven this is the seventh uh sorrow of saint joseph the loss of the child jesus for three days and the seventh joy remembering that finding the child jesus in the temple after three days so the seven joys of saint joseph remedy his seven sorrows a beautiful devotion as we approach this mid-year of the year of saint joseph having just added from rome the seven new titles guardian of the redeemer servant of christ minister of salvation support and difficulties patron of refugees patron of the afflicted and patron of the poor saint joseph pray for us 833 288 ewtn is our toll-free number 833-2 it's open line tuesday with father wade [Music] [Applause] the leading catholic voices are on ewtn radio part of the success we've had on the world over i attribute to certainly my relationship with mother angelica and her teaching me early on that when you sit with someone you talk to them you share with them and you create an environment where they will tell you things they wouldn't tell anyone else the world over with raven arroyo thursday night eight eastern on ewtn radio there's a certain kind of prayer people are often afraid to say those really honest prayers the prayer of saint augustine when he prayed lord help me be pure but not yet the prayer of job when he was complaining god why did this happen to me the prayer of mary when lazarus died if you had been here lord my brother wouldn't have died where were you the prayers i find myself saying sometimes are difficult moments in life when i'm at the end of my rope lord i can't do this you gotta kick in here i think people refrain from those prayers because we think they're unholy or maybe god can't take it or maybe we think we're faking him out by pretending we have it all together and everything is great and we're as pious as can be listen be honest with god you can't hide yourself from him he wants honest prayers because he doesn't just want your words he wants your heart and when you pray with all your heart the answer you might get might not be a change in your circumstances but i guarantee you it'll change you this is christophanic time for your calls at 833-288-3986 first up today is john in springfield ohio listening to ewtn on st gabriel radio john you are on with father wade menezes all right hi father hey john how you doing thanks for your call today we really appreciate it i just wanted to talk to you about adoration how pretty it is great great do you do you have an adoration chapel there at your local parish i go to church called saint vernon turn springfield at god's adoration every first sunday of the month okay beautiful beautiful you know a great website lord i'm sorry repeat say again i stare at the lord beautiful beautiful you know eucharistic adoration is such an important part of the spiritual life uh we believe as catholic christians at the most holy eucharist john as you already know this i'm sure is the source and summit of the entire christian life and of course the eucharist is brought into existence at the sacred liturgy the celebration of the eucharist holy mass and so we could also say that the mass is the source and summit in regards to worship and ritual of the entire christian life and because the eucharist is reserved primarily for the sick to take it to to them whether in the nursing home or if they're homebound in their home we can secondarily adore the blessed sacrament that is reserved in the eucharist and we can do so either if it's not exposed in other words still in the saborium in the tabernacle or if it's exposed in a monstrance and it's just a beautiful beautiful thing to do and it sounds like that when you have your adoration there you said you stare at the lord i presume that it's exposed adoration where our lord is exposed in a monstrance is that correct yes wonderful wonderful you know uh for the benefits of other listeners john and and something that you may not be aware of that i want to bring to your attention there's a wonderful website titled the realpresence.org the realpresence.org it's just a wonderful website on what catholics believe in the doctrine of the real presence and i believe it was founded as a website and organization from father john hardin's intermurifica organization originally if i'm not if i'm not mistaken um it may be led by a different group now but it's it's all about the real presence of christ in the eucharist and what we believe and it's just a great resource website for eucharistic documents what we believe about the mass and liturgy what vatican ii said about the eucharist what vatican once said about the eucharist there's a whole section on eucharistic miracles how to begin a eucharistic adoration chapel in your in your parish personal testimonies from laity and consecrated religious and priests um on what the eucharist has done for them in their spiritual life also what the church teaches about worship of the most holy eucharist outside of mass obviously within the context of the mass we're worshiping the most holy eucharist but but for example with eucharistic adoration or with the eucharistic procession of the importance of the worship of the eucharist outside of mass that's important too so the realpresence.org and john i'm going to take your call to also bring to everybody's attention that um uh on june 6 of this year 2021 is corpus christi sunday it's the sunday where we honor in a particular way the doctrine of the real presence of christ in the eucharist in his body blood soul and divinity and often many parishes will have an outdoor eucharistic procession in fact that weekend i'm filling in at a parish in tennessee the pastors asked for assistance that weekend and i already know that uh following one of the sunday masses he's going to lead an outdoor eucharistic procession and it's it's quite beautiful the beautiful ornate canopy over the eucharist which is in the monstrance and the altar servers with the with the incense and the candlesticks and the people following in procession and the ringing of the bells and it's just a beautiful thing to witness especially if the procession has permission from local city ordinance to go off campus from the parish and actually process in the streets it's such a beautiful beautiful testimony of our one holy catholic and apostolic faith and in our belief in the doctrine of the real presence so uh thank you so much john for your call and your witness about the doctrine of the real presence we greatly appreciate it eight three three two eight eight e wtn is our toll-free number it's a free phone call anywhere in north america 833-288-3986 hello father wade god bless you and god bless the fathers of mercy um i know very little history about the fathers of mercy but i know a little bit that they came out of france and i was wondering if you would expound and tell our everybody about the fathers of mercy because it's a wonderful wonderful uh uh order i love it well thank you so much andy we greatly appreciate those kind comments about our community and we thank you very much for your call today on open line tuesday from michigan the fathers of mercy is is simply a roman catholic congregation of priests and permanent deacons whose primary apostolate is preaching parish missions and retreats and devotions with an emphasis on the sacraments of the most holy eucharist and confession the congregation of the fathers of mercy was founded in 1808 originally under the title of the missionaries of france uh the community was founded precisely for the purpose we could say of reevangelizing the french people after the catholic faith had been subjected to years and years of attacks and persecution just before during and after the havoc and destruction of the french revolution uh it is now an exclusively american community of the general it meaning the the main headquarters of the community we call it the general it's where the superior general resides the general of the community is located a few miles outside of bowling green kentucky in a small town called auburn kentucky and again our primary apostolate of the father's mercy is to conduct parish missions and retreats and devotions and conferences which are now given throughout the united states canada and australia and i invite yourself and our listeners to take a very very thorough look at our website at fathersofmercy.com in fact one thing i forgot to say during my springboard topic on the seven new invocations or titles of the litany of saint joseph and the seven sorrows and seven joys of saint joseph devotion is that i have posted as a blog the seven sorrows and seven joys of saint joseph so if you go to fathersofmercy.com and simply click on the magnifying glass icon in the upper right hand side of the homepage of fathersofmercy.com what we call our home page the first thing that comes up when you input the address click on the magnifying glass icon and then a search bar shows up on the middle of the screen on that search bar just put seven or types seven sorrows seven joys or just seven sorrows or just seven joys and it'll come up right away the seven sorrows and seven joys of st joseph and they're listed right there all 14 and you can print them off on your home printer but do andy take a look at fathersofmercy.com if you haven't already and any other listeners who might be listening and take a thorough look at our website we have short bios on all of the members there i said that we're a congregation of of priests and permanent deacons we don't have any members who are permanent deacons only all of our men so far have discerned to go fully into the priesthood but it's interesting that our uh our communities constitutions do not permit a permanent brotherhood so we don't have permanent brothers in the fathers of mercy but we do allow in our constitutions approved by rome in the late 80s we do allow for permanent deacons now why is that because deacons can still preach officially on behalf of holy mother church the bride of christ and preaching is such a huge part of the mission of the fathers of mercy precisely because of the founding immediately in the aftermath of the french revolution to preach the catholic faith in an effort to bring the people back to practicing that same catholic faith and so preaching is such a big part of our community that we do allow permanent deacons who discern to stay unmarried deacons but we don't have a permanent brotherhood because a permanent brotherhood would not have the official uh ability or capacity to preach in the name of the church but deacons do remember deacons is is the first level if you will of the fullness of holy orders in the episcopal so there's diaconate presbytera or priesthood and then the episcopate meaning the bishops so the diaconate deacons are a part of the sacrament of holy orders so we do permit a permanent diaconate but we do not have a permanent brotherhood so maybe there's some men out there who are discerning a possible religious vocation and maybe god's calling you to be a permanent deacon unmarried with the fathers of mercy so do take a look at our community so andy thank you so much for your call from michigan we greatly appreciate it eight three three two eight eight e wtn that's our toll free number it's a free phone call anywhere in north america eight three three two eight eight three nine eight six if you're outside the united states and canada we'd still love to hear from you your number is one two zero five two seven one two nine eight five and we will even put you straight to the front of the line at one two zero five two seven one two nine eight five next up is jessie in bismarck north dakota listening on real presence radio jessie you're on with father wade benesis hi um i i've been born and raised catholic but just have questions um so as catholics we believe in the bible and tradition so i'm wondering if you can explain what what is meant by tradition and then also um i my mother-in-law is missouri senate lutheran and at one point i had overheard her saying that she that were as her lutheran is their old testament people and i don't really know what she means by that so you could explain that yeah i'm not sure what she would have meant by that either uh the catholic christians are indeed an old testament people too and that we believe that the old testament has a solid foundation as it and is very very important to understand the fullness of the new covenant found in the new testament brought to that fulfillment by jesus christ himself so we are not um we are not a christian people that focus only and solely on the old testament of of the faith but but on both old and new testament and believe that the new testament um is the fruition in the new covenant brought forth by jesus christ and his paschal mystery the passion death resurrection our lord of our lord jesus christ who came to redeem us and save us um he is the one foretold by all the prophets in the old testament and his life and service as our redeemer and savior is that fruition par excellence uh foretold in the old testament as far as sacred tradition goes we believe that tradition and this is right out of the catechism uh of the the universal catechism of the catholic church and i'd like to why don't we hit that in just a minute father wait if you'd like to be part of the program the number is 833 288 ewtn 833-288-399 it's ewtn's open line tuesday with father wade menezes [Music] the words of blessed carlo agutis our goal must be infinite not finite the infinite is our homeland heaven has been waiting for us forever christ is the answer with father john ricardo let us strive to know the lord quick question to you and me right now is that what you and i are doing every single day when you and i wake up every day do we strive to know jesus or not in the old testament in the same book of hosea a little bit later on it's in chapter 14 the lord says through the prophet my people perish or in another translation my people are being destroyed because of a lack of knowledge not a lock of data we got tons of data not a lack of information we got a lot of information not just about things that are happening in the world we got a lot of data a lot of knowledge a lot of information about god but not a lot of intimacy with god not a lot of relationship with god not a lot of friendship that's the cry of god's heart god wants to give himself to us in the incredible gift of friendship and we're not taking advantage of it unplanned the true story of abby johnson i would be the youngest director in planned parenthood history she believed in a woman's right to choose i've had an abortion myself so i don't have any problem with another woman making the same decision until the day she saw something that changed everything tiny perfect little baby and then it was just gone now she's pulling back the curtain on the abortion industry unplanned available at ewtnrc.com and the ewtn app matt swaim here join us for a wednesday edition of the sunrise morning show when we talked to t.l putnam about the book of nahum in our series on the old testament minor prophets join us tomorrow morning now back to open line this is open line on the ewtn global catholic radio network 833 288 ewtn is our toll-free number we're talking to jesse in bismarck north dakota and father wade we're talking about uh what we mean by tradition in the catholic church yeah and this is right out of the the universal catechism the catholic church jesse and if you don't have a copy of the universal catechism uh i would like to recommend that you get one it's just a a wonderful sure norm of the faith quote unquote those are words from saint john paul ii who promulgated the first universal catechism since the closing of the council of trent in the 16th century it came out in the early 1990s i believe 1992 but you know we believe in sacred scripture sacred tradition and the magisterium the teaching office of the church which itself is rooted or grounded in the apostolic college of the apostles so let me comb through these briefly you're asking about tradition tradition is the living transmission but it's the living transmission both orally and written of the message of the gospel in the church the oral preaching of the apostles and the written message of salvation under the inspiration of the holy spirit the bible are conserved and handed on as the deposit of faith quote unquote the deposit of faith and continued in the apostolic succession of the church both the living tradition and the written scriptures have their common source in the revelation of god in jesus christ now the theological liturgical disciplinary and devotional traditions of the local churches you know east and west the latin rites some of the eastern rites etc both contain and can be distinguished from this apostolic tradition because that comes from the particular churches but in regards to divine revelation and what's revealed to be saved we believe in both that oral and written tradition of the church the written being sacred scripture itself which is the next thing i want to talk about sacred scripture is the sacred writings of both the old and the new testaments what we call the bible the bible consists of the books that contain the truth of god's revelation and were composed by human authors inspired per se by the holy spirit the bible contains both the 46 books of the old testament and the 27 books of the new testament when we say biblical inspiration quote unquote we say biblical inspiration in reference to the gift of the holy spirit which assisted the human author of that particular book to write that biblical book so that it has god as its primary author and thus teaches faithfully and without error the saving truth that god has willed to be consigned to us and then thirdly the magisterium come it comes from the latin word magister which means teacher okay the magisterium is jesse is is the living teaching office of the church it's it's rooted in the apostolic college of the apostles whose task it is to give as authentic interpretation we would say of the word of god whether in its written form sacred scripture are in the form of handed-on oral tradition the magisterium ensures the church's fidelity to the teaching of the apostles and matters of faith and morals so we could say in a very real sense that it's the magisterium the teaching office of the church rooted in the apostolic college that gives us sacred scripture because the canon of scripture of those 73 books the 46 books of the old testament and the 27 books of the new testament was voted on decided on you could say at the council of carthage definitively in 397 a.d well that was that was a gathering of the church's bishops okay so because you have the pseudo gospels etc so you you have the magisterium of the church um discerning sacred scripture in its uh canonical form the collection of the books not in the books themselves they they predate for example the old testament books obviously predate the magisterium because the old testament predates the apostolic college of the twelve called forth by jesus during his three years of public life but as far as discerning and deciding on the canon of scripture canon is simply means collection quote unquote the collection of books the the canon of books of these 73 books that comes from the magisterium so if you're familiar with my preaching when i talk about the church's ecclesiology i talk about the three-legged stool and i say you know if you take a three-legged stool and turn it upside down what shape do the legs make they make a triangle well if you remove one of those three legs from the stool you risk falling and the stool risks falling right so you don't want to separate yourself from either sacred scripture and or from sacred tradition and or from the magisterium of the church because you risk falling huh and so it's a collective whole and each one is distinct from the other two and each one has its prominence and importance so great question and i hopefully that also answers the importance of the old testament and what we as catholic christians believe which was the first part of your christian your question there jesse thank you so much god bless you 833 288 ewtn is our toll-free number we head from the top of the country down to the gulf of mexico georgia is in mobile alabama listening at ewtn.com georgia you're on with father wade hi father wade how you doing doing great georgia thank you oh father wade i always wanted to call you and talk you seem like such a kind man well i appreciate that i'm glad you called today well i have something really that's not good i wanted to know should i or should i not remind or let my husband know since he says he can't remember anything about the things he has done in our marriage that we're not good not good for the children still not good he's well it's got worse since he retired he's now smoked marijuana also and he's just a drunk and a mean person always i mean it doesn't make any sense to me buddy that's the way he is okay let me ask you one question are you asking this question because you and your husband have had conversations in the past for example about maybe the the beauty and reality of him getting back to confession is is he a baptized counselor he's not catholic oh he's not catholic correct to be a method it's supposed to be okay okay so you're you're asking if you should approach him to talk about things that he's done in the past both within the marriage toward you and within the marriage toward the kids to help him effectively examine his conscience to hopefully help him tend toward a change of heart by god's grace okay i think that's what you're asking you have every right to do that but you want to make sure you do it in the right way okay first of all i think you're wanting to help your husband examination examine his conscience georgia because you want to one day see your husband in heaven it reminds me of the primary reason of a sacramental marriage and i've said this before on open line tuesday the main purpose of a sacramental marriage is to help get one another into heaven also the greatest the greatest gift we can give to the other even beyond this life beyond this earthly life which is an average of 78 years according to the latest longevity statistics is to want them to enter the beatific vision heaven for all eternity the greatest gift you can give for another in this life of 78 years as an average is to lay down your life for them but the greatest gift you can give the other even beyond this life is to want them to attain heaven so that's something you hope for your husband it sounds like and also as his covenant spouse within matrimony you want to help lead him to heaven so you have every right to help your husband examine his conscience and hopefully hopefully you have a relationship where he would be open to that but you want to make sure you do it correctly first thing you set by the example yourself he needs to see the faith-filled life you're living georgia whether you're a catholic or not i don't know because non-catholics call the show as well you want to it set by example how you live your life and if you are a catholic by your loving of the holy eucharist your your love for sunday mass your love for your neighbor your love for monthly confession and you're witnessing to your husband on these things in this regard okay saint thomas aquinas and i've said this many times as well on the show st thomas aquinas says there's three guides or three guide posts or three hallmarks if you will whenever we go to evangelize somebody who has strayed from the faith and we attempt to bring them back around to the fullness of faith he says we need to do it privately charitably and rarely we do it privately give them the correction so as not to embarrass them in front of other people number two we do it charitably because charity is the queen of the virtues huh faith hope and love and the greatest of these is love the new testament tells us and we do it rarely because they're an adult they have to work out their own salvation with hopefully filial fear and not servile fear okay so privately charitably and rarely you want to help bring your husband to the truth but instead of beginning with his sins what you deem are his sins by what he's done to you in regards to infractions within your marriage and what you believe he's done to your children and how he's raised the children by the bad example of smoking marijuana in front of them etc i think you mentioned earlier instead of beginning with the sins why not begin with the virtue by witnessing to your husband on what a beautiful life the christian life is when it's lived in conformity with god's will and in conformity with the moral principles that have been revealed through divine revelation why don't we begin there and then when you witness to him about those things georgia you can begin to guide him in an examination of conscience even if he's not a catholic you can share with him a really good written form of the examination of conscience there's a great one at fathersofmercy.com again at the homepage of fathersofmercy.com click in the upper right on the magnifying glass icon and the search bar comes up simply type in the words examination of conscience and our wonderful fathers of mercy examination of conscience brochure comes up you can print it out on your home printer and it combs through the ten commandments and you can tell him say honey look what i found that's helping me it's greatly aiding me see how you put the onus on yourself georgia you're saying hey honey this helped me it greatly moved me this examination of conscience so much so that i i feel called to share it with others and so honey i want to share it with you you're telling him okay that's a great witness you're putting the onus on yourself you're humbling yourself saying that you benefited from the examination of conscience yourself so this is a beautiful way that privately charitably and rarely and what's rarely today for 2021 i'd say once every three months once every four months maybe three to four times a year try to plant the seed to bring the loved one back around to the fullness of truth you know it's interesting saint thomas aquinas defines fraternal correction as quote an attempt an attempt to bring back a loved one back around to the fullness of truth a loved one who has strayed from the truth notice that saint thomas doesn't call it a successful endeavor he does not say that fraternal correction is a successful endeavor to bring back around to the fullness of truth a loved one who is strayed from the truth no no no no a lot of it's going to bear on the one you're evangelizing to is their heart open to the truth because it all has to also it has to springboard from their own openness to the truth the evangelizer who loves the truth and wants to witness to the truth can give the truth but the one who's receiving it has to be open to remember we believe that faith is both a gift from god and a human act by which the one receiving the faith as a gift is open to the faith and responds back to god with acceptance of faith okay we believe that faith is both a gift of god and a human act it's not either or it's both and okay so it's an attempt to bring back a loved one back around to the fullness of truth this fraternal correction and which literally means brotherly correction but in this case it's it's it's the correction of one spouse giving it to another spouse because they love that spouse and they want to one day see that spouse in heaven you know one time i i saw a beautiful beautiful um uh wedding invitation of a young couple and it simply said on the front of the wedding invitation quote the main purpose of a sacramental marriage is to help get one another into heaven and if i remember correctly jack i quoted that in the homily at johnette's uh wedding homily and um uh it's the truth it's a statement of truth it wasn't my favorite quote though i prefer the one about uh one imperfect man and one imperfect woman oh yeah i personally absolutely absolutely refuse to give up on one another yeah what is a perfect marriage a perfect marriage is an imperfect husband and an imperfect wife that absolutely refuse to give up on one another that's a perfect marriage and how true is that so georgia i commend you it sounds like you love your husband you want to bring him back around to the fullness of truth um set the example you show him the faith you live so much vibrantly and lovingly that you are drawing him to it and then privately charitably and rarely according to those beautiful guideposts from saint thomas aquinas you try to plant the seed georgia there's a there's a great great website called the alexanderhouse.org the alexanderhouse.org it's a great resource website for marriages catholic and non to help strengthen marriages it's founded by dear dear friends of mine greg and julie alexander the alexanderhaus.org be sure to take a look at it thank you so much for your call georgia 833 288 ewtn is our toll-free number eight three 833-288-390 eight six you know we do this program open line every day monday through friday a different host every day we call it our lineup of heavy hitters and tomorrow father mitch pacqua keeps the ball rolling uh he'll be in the house tomorrow three eastern time right here on ewtn radio next up is marie in windsor ontario canada she's watching us on youtube today marie you're on with father wade thank you hello father uh wait how are you doing i'm doing great marie thank you so much um i'm i wanted to call and i love the ewtn and i thank you wwg so much because i've learned so much of my faith and everything and just gone closer to god but i'm phony because of my very dear friend she passed away on mother's day and fortunately of covet and in where i live in winter ontario we right now we have a lockdown so the churches are closed and there's a huge restriction at the hospital nobody was allowed so her family was not allowed there in the 14 15 16 days she was there except for the day that she died they allowed finally her three children to go in and and full ppe and be with her i tried to get with their permission because she's catholic the kids aren't practicing but they believe that priests could come and give her the sacrament of the sick but unfortunately they told me because she was positive that the priest the hospital priest was not allowed to go in there unless she was a covid negative so she died without the sacrament of the sick and her last time going to church was easter easter sunday i remember i don't know how long for confession she went but i mean i say the divine mercy and the rosary for her and i'm trying to help encourage the children because one of them is my god child that god's always there and that prayers you know our faith is so important so i pray for them to come back to the church and i pray i just want to know i'm so sad and i don't think she's not gonna have the math because we can't have the um funeral and i don't know if she's gonna be buried right away they're talking about she'll be cremated so and then i don't know if the kids they were saying that she may they may bring her home in the urn and like i just explained you can't keep her there so i just want to know what what is how can i feel my friend sure you're asking a question i think primarily about suffrages for the deceased it sounds like she was a catholic woman you because you mentioned about not being able to get the priest to her side because of kovid um you know pope francis's document that came out at the beginning of the pandemic on what priests can do even standing at the threshold of a hospital and administering the sacrament from afar and giving the words of absolution suffices also for a plenary indulgence a lot of priests don't know about what that document states but it came out at the very beginning of the pandemic and it's unfortunate that a lot of people in nursing homes and hospitals have not received um the words of absolution the words of the apostolic pardon from the priest standing on location even from the parking lot depending on how close the the administration will let him come to the threshold god never demands more than what we're able to give and pope francis specified very clearly what can still be done for those who are in danger of death not only because of the pandemic but for other reasons but because of the pandemic restrictions a priest cannot get close to them so that's the first thing because i want to i want to inform consciences here and inform intellects that there are other means where holy mother church still provides what can be done in danger of death even if one cannot literally be touched by the priest for example during the anointing of the final anointing of the sick which can be part of the last rites if the if the priest cannot literally give the apostolic pardon at the person's death bed they can do it from afar go back and read that document we catholics need to inform our consciences and our intellects of how holy mother church bends over backwards for her sons and her daughters to be able to receive the fullness of graces at the end of their earthly life and marie i want to thank you so much so much for caring for your friend and being concerned in this regard about her her children for example who seemingly don't know about the faith don't know to fulfill their mother's wishes because i'm sure the mother's wishes would be not to keep me in perpetuity and an urn on the the fireplace mantle but indeed to bury my urn not scatter my ashes but to entomb my urn in a columbarium or if the cemetery permits it to bury my urn in the ground which is what the church permits the church permits cremation but the church does not permit scattering in the ashes so the urn can be entombed in a columbarium above ground which you see a lot of parishes now constructing on the parish grounds themselves or at a cemetery you'll see a columbarium above ground or you'll see a cemetery that permits the bearing of the urn on an existing grave of a loved one let's say her husband died five years ago and the husband had a full body burial in the ground five years ago now that she's passed but she was cremated her urn some cemeteries permit her earn would would permit her urn to be buried in her husband's earthen grave above his coffin how beautiful is that so we're seeing a lot of different options now that are available that don't involve the scattering of the ashes so again with fraternal correction what i just answered the previous caller you want to privately charitably and rarely once every three or four months educate her children her grown children i presume on what they don't know about the catholic faith which are things that the mother would have wanted because the mother practiced her catholic faith although at the end the practicing of her catholic faith was restricted because of kovy okay so these are things that we need to inform our intellects about to know the faith and to spread the faith to others so that others you know this is why i wrote the four last things a catechetical guide to death judgment heaven and hell two reasons were the primary impetus is why i wrote that book number one too many catholics that i met believed that purgatory was an automatic doctrine that that purgatory was not avoidable well that's a heresy god's plan a for you is to go straight to heaven when you die and that's very possible and number two i got tired of meeting fallen away catholics who knew absolutely nothing about the last rites so when when their 50-something and older parents are dying these late teens up to their 40 year olds who no longer practice the faith have absolutely no idea what to do for their parents when their parents are in a death bed situation for the last rites nor do they know what to do for themselves should they get in a car accident and all of a sudden find themselves in icu they've informed nobody in their family that they prefer to have the last rights as well and the devil's loving all of this the devil's loving every bit of it the fact that we're that we don't know our faith we don't know our faith of baptism and we don't know the the mandate of our baptism we don't know the mandate of our confirmation we don't know the mandate of regular eucharist receive and regular confession receive because we don't receive eucharistic confession regularly these fallen away catholics so that was the second reason why i wrote the four last things a catechetical guide to death judgment heather and hell because they don't know what to do for their parents when their parents are on their deathbed and and your call marie is up is a pure example of that these kids didn't know what to do when their mother was on their deathbed you know and it's very very sad now in regards to suffrages i'm so glad to hear that you're still praying the rosary and the chaplet of divine mercy even if it's just your regular daily rosary and regular daily chaplet that you're lifting her name up in it it doesn't have to be her a a separate rosary in a separate chaplet that you're praying just for your friend's repose of soul it's it's nice if you want to do that and that's beautiful if you got the time to do that but all i'm saying is don't overburden yourself god knows what your intentions are and if you pray a regular daily rosary in a regular daily chapel of divine mercy just include the blessed repose of your friend's soul as one intention among many intentions in that one daily rosary and one daily chaplet that's what you want to do okay also how about doing good works for the blessed repose of your friend's soul not for the works themselves okay but for the charity they prosper how about how about going to one of these big um stores where you can buy things in bulk huh and uh and and maybe buy uh extra diapers or or whatever and donate them to a birthright office or to a pregnancy crisis center uh in memory of your friend who recently died in her honor and her memory you're doing that good work as a suffrage for her soul how about the three imminent good works of prayer fasting and almsgiving carrying out any one of those three or any combination of those three marie with that particular intention there's so much you can do in regards to suffrages you can also contact a religious order directly or contact your parish church and say i realize the churches are closed right now in windsor ontario canada or in the province of ontario but i have an in mass intention that i presume father is still celebrating his daily mass albeit privately without a congregation because of covet but his father taking uh intentions for masses because i have a an intention i'd like him to celebrate a mass for a recently deceased friend of mine this is you talking to the parish secretary when you call the parish for example or call a religious orders main offices and ask them the same thing and you can still have a mass said a postmortem after her death a postmortem for your friend so marie there's so much you can do and uh in regards to suffrages and knowing the faith in regards to end-of-life issues what a great witness question thank you so much and i'll lift up your friend's soul tonight when i pray my vespers father way would you leave us with a blessing i certainly will jack may the blessing of almighty god the father and the son and the holy spirit descend upon all of our open-line tuesday listeners this day and always and remain with
