imagine a story about a woman who has done everything by herself for years she is extremely smart and resourceful but the lack of companionship slowly turns her into a bitter and arrogant person she fools herself into thinking that she can save her people on her own until reality hits her heart and she realizes that she is powerless against the big bad guy she breaks down in tears and turns to the people she rejected for help and they help her because they are her friends and they know she's been suffering all along this could have been rings of power elorondo the writers don't understand that crying and asking for help in such circumstances doesn't make you weak it makes you human so she says nothing and her quote-unquote friend has to investigate to understand what the hell is going on and he doesn't do anything because the story won't let him what a boring and stupid show and that's a difference between rings of power in one piece the showrunners understand not only the story of one piece but storytelling in general Galadriel and Nami are put in an impossible situation where they have to ask for help for the sake of the story in their character development but only Nami does okay this has a tremendous impact on her character and her story her play for help allows the boys to rise to the occasion because this isn't Disney Star Wars and it isn't written by losers who have their heads so far up their own asses that even their characters can't see which way is up just four Dudes going after the guy who met their friend their crewmate their nakama cry they don't make jokes they don't make excuses they don't talk about their feelings they do what needs to be done the season ends with an anime song about tsunami's Journey I'll sell my ship on my own I've always been taught to be brave and strong and look the price the price I pay the lyrics are not exactly worthy of a Howard Ashman song but at least they capture the point of the story unlike The Little Mermaid reimagined where the idiot writers make Ariel sing during under the sea and it's also a bit more creative then nobody goes away nobody goes up hey nobody goes on train which is not exactly worthy of Tolkien The live-action adaptation of one piece is far from perfect but it manages to convey the main themes and Stakes of the Manga why does one piece succeed where adaptations like Cowboy Bebop sequels like Kenobi and remakes like Peter Pan are giant piles of garbage based on someone else's work created by Oda in 1997 one piece is the best-selling manga of all time and it's not even close one piece is a story written by one man and it has outsold every single Batman comic ever made in less than 25 years so let's just say you don't want to screw it up it would be like making a shitty adaptation of a book from The Lord of the Rings Universe nobody would be stupid enough to do that one piece is still running with currently 1091 chapters or 1074 episodes and with the inability of streaming platforms to produce shows longer than two seasons with more than 5 episodes I'm confident the show will eventually crash can burn the great thing about making a show based not just on a book but a good book is that half the showrunner's job is already done all the ideas are there they just have to extract them and adapt them to a different medium being faithful to the source material doesn't mean copying the book who had forward in the process of adaptation some details and nuances will be lost and that's fine as long as the broad message is an essence of the story are preserved it's not easy but given the fact that Game of Thrones tend to [ __ ] the moment the writers run out of ideas to adapt it's fair to assume that it's easier than building your own IP from scratch so why is it so hard for these writers to do it ego I'm sure when you were a kid you had to write a summary of a book for school and somehow you didn't include your fan fiction or ideology in the paper well these writers graduated from high school and now they think they can do a better job than the book they were asked to summarize they believe their World Views matter and that it's their moral duty to gonna Crusade and spread their [ __ ] video opinions I'm going to say something crazy if a book has sold hundreds of millions of copies it means it already has Mass Appeal and has no need to update correct or fix anything the idea that you can not only improve but fix what you perceive to be a problem is ridiculous don't pretend to write the wrongs of the past as if you're better than the people who came before you you're not special stop pretending you've reached the Pinnacle of Enlightenment your job is to adapt not to fix you adapt to today's audience you don't fix a [ __ ] because it wasn't a problem when it was written a new fix will have to be fixed in the future you can argue that it's semantics but the words you use to qualify your piece of art are important because they reflect your opinion of it your negative attitude towards an IP creates resentment among fans because you sound stupid and imply that what they like is wrong the casting director of The Witcher would have cast a non-white actress as Nami to challenge waifu beauty standards they didn't and choose Jennifer's actress because she was the best for the role they used her to promote their cause what kind of Twisted people are you nobody gives a [ __ ] about your social cause and your view on society especially when it takes precedence over the story and a human being it will come to you as a shock but The Witcher is not about you I know you don't have the skills to make your own book but instead of rewriting art you don't like you should find something that fits your reality but don't act surprised when no one watches your show because as a reason some stories sell and some don't the writers of the Rings of power would have made tsunami fight along and she would have been the one to defeat him completely destroying the point of her story and of the show the writers of the willow show would have turned the fellowship into a group of horny teenagers where everyone talks about their feelings and tries to have sex with each other completely destroying the dynamic and the point of One Piece I'm not sure Dove you're being gross and very creepy know you're being so creepy if old you could see the new you hit bag the writers of Disney's Towers would have ignored their target audience and the built-in fandom to make one piece for people who don't exist as long as these losers think their opinions matter we won't have good adaptations because they're not adapting a work of fiction they're adapting their World Views art means something and you can't just put whatever you want into it without fundamentally changing it their ego is bleeding into the story and their blatant disregard for the IPS evident in the marketing all we know about Peter Jackson's involvement with the rings of power is that the foreigners ghosted him they responded with valid arguments as to why they didn't want Peter involved but as the article points out all their arguments are cool but that's not the problem One does not simply offer to send Peter Jackson a script and then leave the man hanging this shows a complete lack of respect on the one hand you have this foreign and on the other you have that the other time we heard from the cast of The Lord of the Rings was to show us their cool t-shirts based on fan fiction notice how here you have great and emotional interactions between author voice actors and live action actors Dear Mr Oda thank you for creating one piece and making so many people around the world happy I am beyond honored to be a part of this story and me and the entire live-action team admire you so much and there you have only drama I don't expect the cast of The Lord of the Rings to be part of the marketing because they are different people on different projects just like I don't expect Disney to listen to Lucas because he sold the Star Wars but if you're interacting and it's all about drama then there's something seriously wrong with your show The Witcher showrunner refutes claim the teamwork to the books as a show is based on how the hell do you get headlines like this whereas those headlines for the Lord of the Rings trilogy are for One Piece having to refute accusations doesn't mean that true but you put the show in a situation where it sounds like it is no one would believe this headline for one piece and even if the showrunners of One Piece hated the manga people wouldn't care because it doesn't show in the final product I don't care if these promo clips and interviews are real or not maybe these people are just in it for the money good if they want money they won't insert themselves or their reality into the show this clip shows a level of respect not seen in the sequel Trilogy this hat is not just a hat it was given to Luffy 26 years ago just like this lightsaber is not just a lightsaber even if you're only here for the money try to show some respect and humility instead of [ __ ] on the source material the Snow White disaster is just to the latest in a long list again it's so simple don't throw the hat off your Cliff don't slap your main character thank the fans and the people who gave you this opportunity and cash your checks the fans will love you but don't go too far and take the fans for idiots too like Moffitt Clark why didn't she talk to Caitlyn and chat about the role of Galadriel there's a billion legitimate reason why she didn't but she chose to say this because Kate is like mythical someone I can't believe even exists but I kind of see her as my Guiding Light what the hell are you talking about the fan base of One Piece sometimes refers to Oda as Goda but it's for the memes we know that he's a real person it sounds so fast and fake a queen what a pathetic fake excuse somehow a 20 year old can meet a God and she can't meet a queen in any case you're disdain for the source material bleeds into the story I don't need confirmation that Ryan Johnson hates not only episode 7 but Star Wars in general because the movie speaks for itself in the same way I'm convinced from The Witcher adaptation that the showrunner hates a good portion of the books Kenobi or the sequel Trilogy Of The Wheel of Time or The Witcher or Cowboy Bebop or rings of power and Peter Pan all had some sort of controversy and somehow one piece didn't it's almost like they invented controversies to get the moral High ground and hide the fact that all these adaptations are trash I checked the Twitter profiles of the one piece cast for some juicy drama and I didn't find any what I saw instead is Emily Rudd's bio and now I'm a huge fan then I searched for articles about a potential drama and I couldn't find any how peculiar I'm not kidding the only article I found was about how fans are surprisingly not body shaming Emily Rudd they are desperate for some drama I love the clever use of the word surprisingly to insult to the fandom it's great and the funny party that I can guarantee she received negative comments because Nami is a very popular waifu no one should receive such comments and the best thing to do is to ignore them if you get involved it will backfire on you I just wanted to address a couple of things that sort of keep coming up in the comments amongst fans first I wanted to apologize to the fans of all the mistakes she made the biggest one was using the word fans because now she has thrown my valid criticism of a stupid outfit in the garbage with inappropriate comments of 12 [ __ ] now everyone feels alienated and the conversation has changed now we are not discussing a piece of entertainment anymore you would think that being the best-selling manga of all time would guarantee a certain level of respect but rings of power proved that the hubris of these people is out of this world luckily there was no ego involved in the making of the one piece show or at least it didn't affect it just by watching the show you can see that they didn't have preconceived notions such as there's not enough of this there's too much of that the original shouldn't do this the story is missing that I don't like this so it's bad and if they did they were quickly shut down by Oda we obviously come from very different cultures so when it comes to entertainment we have different codes skill sets and aims it also seems like Oda had a say in the production there were numerous scenes the production agreed read the two reshoots because I felt they were not good enough to put out into the world how much Freedom did the directors and the writers had to change the original story only as much as Oda gave us because everything went enter odor apparently some weirdos are shipping Zorro and Nami but the showrunner explained that due to the agreement with the original author it is impossible for Zoro and Nami to have a romantic relationship turns out Oda has a rule for Netflix no romance within the crew oh my God thank you Oda I'm watching a Shonen not fan fiction if you really want to see crew romance then you're a fake fan that's not gatekeeping that's a fact not everything in a story is open to debate or interpretation it's like saying Frodo and Sam are Gimli and Legolas should bang at the end of the movie it means you don't understand the story now I'm always skeptical when a showrunner says that the original author is involved with a project but like the fake controversies if we compare this headline no really Oda was deeply involved in the live action one piece with this one Cowboy Bebop Creator couldn't bear watching the Netflix adaptation of his work it's clear that one sounds good and one sounds not so good I found an article written by a failed journalist saying that Oda hated the live-action adaptation unfortunately for them a simple Google search showed that the article lies and takes his words out of context to generate some clicks this is not an honest mistake and I hope one day someone suits their asses it seems like you can tell if a show is good just by looking at the amount of made-up [ __ ] from the media what works in favor of a one-piece adaptation is that Oda is still writing the story every day he hasn't lost touch with his story and his audience he hasn't spent all his retirement money yet and he still cares about his story if we are going to do it I want to be able to supervise things while I'm still active there is no disconnect between Oda and the fans as he gave a great answer to the biggest criticism of the trailer there were also some lines that I thought didn't feel like Luffy and paper but when I saw the film scenes I went it works we all agree that Luffy doesn't sound like the original character we're on the same page page regarding negative criticism about missing characters and omitted sins he says I'm sure they'll come from a place of love so I intend to enjoy even those comments qualifying criticism as love instead of toxicity is refreshing especially with a quote from the manga next to it don't focus on what the adaptation lacks focus on what it has because it's true that the story is different in many ways one quick example in the live action Gap is introduced in the first episode and he gives a better speech as a hero who captured the king of the Pirates in the anime Gap is introduced in episode 68 and he falls asleep in the middle of a conversation he hasn't slept in five days because he is trying to set a record for the most Donuts eaten in a single sitting despite the stark contrast between the two scenes the show makes it clear that Gap is not all there and that's what's important not betraying the core values of the story in the characters taking away some of the wildest aspects of a character is necessary to make them feel somewhat human otherwise you end up with this [Music] the reasons our changes are not offensive is because the characters remain familiar and viewers don't have to drastically change or adjust their understanding of the story sure they only gave us 10 percent of usapa's story but it's not 10 person to imagined it's 10 percent that matters in comparison The Witcher is not about The Witcher so viewers will have to make a tremendous amount of effort and adjustment if they want to watch the show unlike Disney Star Wars one piece isn't about fan service seeing bounties of future characters hearing a certain song or listening to a story are elements that serve the World building not the fans hearing being Sasaki actually improves as a manga because it was introduced later in the story when it should have been there on day one it's a pirate song in the universe not fan service fan service is putting a clumsy line in your show just to reference the name of a book better that than allowing thrawn's return turn as heir to the Empire that's stupid because that's fun service in fact has a little fun service in one piece that a casual viewer wouldn't feel anything during the Hudson because the show doesn't make it more than it is there's no epic music crazy acting or insane camera angles it's just a simple goodbye between a guy and a kid it's the only scene that takes more time in the show than in the original is when Luffy meets the Mary but again it's a setup and it makes the story more consistent as a one-piece fan the show is great it would be very easy to destroy the show but as we've seen they've earned a good will of the fans the way I see it they focused more on making a viable Western live-action adaptation of a manga than on writing a perfect story this first season is like a giant pilot episode that only cost 144 million dollars now that they have successfully launched this adaptation they need to drastically improve the pacing character work and writing in general if enough people watch the show they have everything they need to make a decent season 2 the show has Hearts but as we've seen with Blue Beetle hot isn't enough to make it good because we're not talking about a school play made by 5 years old the anime often elevates as a manga and it would be swell if the show could do the same in its own way I hope the Witcher or Cowboy Bebop didn't die in vain and that their sacrifice will allow one piece to succeed I read reviews to see what's people and familiar with the source material thought of it and I got an ad for The Wheel of Time it was funny talk about a contrasting adaptation if enough people watch the show they have everything they need to make a decent season too foreign [Applause] [Music]
