every time I speak American English people still tell me to repeat myself what am I doing wrong well on this video I'm going to share with you one secret tip to stop people from asking you to repeat yourself [Music] hey there I'm Gabriel brofaro from GB voice Academy your action reduction instructor to help you master the American accent like in all my videos I'm not going to just lecture you I'm going to share with you these secrets but then at the end of the video we're going to implement them to make sure they stick in your brain because remember you don't learn anything by just watching videos you have to practice this is like the American accent gym and I'm your personal trainer with repetition comes results now I've said many times on these videos that you need to take your time when speaking American English to not get all caught up in fast-speaking American speakers we don't have the luxury of speeding up because we're still learning but there are more elements to that you could still have an accent and talk very slow and not be understood it's the pronunciation that we have to nail as well as a slower and more enunciated speed here's an exercise I want you to do that's going to fix this pronunciation issue instantly I call this the target link game so what we do is we isolate the target sounds which in my American accent course I go through specifically these are specific American sounds vowels as well as very common targets that are set and placed in certain areas of the Mask so it's easy to listen to so what we do in this target link game is we isolate the American sounds and we just do the American sounds forget about the consonants for now and you could hear it in individual words well let's do a few here with you now some very common words so you understand what I'm saying for example this word here which is a big issue for a lot of my clients ah ER just the target sounds ah ER that's all it is now if we add the consonants in there water see how light that was that W was not overpowering the word water water no the open Target sounds were the star of the show water water see how easy that was you notice that I added the ER sound in there in my target map system ER is a very specific Target you notice that ER is emphasized a lot when Americans speak so that's why I don't like calling it vowel targets let's look at this other word here just the target sound what is it a a you don't need to worry about anything else just put that emphasis on that Target sound a now let's tack on the pl at the beginning very lightly play see how I just touched it I didn't hit it hard no consonants take a back seat it's just the framing of the picture and the picture the main focus of this picture is the target sound a play we're not putting emphasis on those consonants good what's the target emphasis here ah right that has to be the star of the show this target ah now let's add the consonants one one again that W and that n didn't take over the word one no the emphasis is on the target wa you hear that Target sound the consonants are just an afterthought now let's put it all into a sentence I want to play in the water we're emphasizing those Target sounds I want to play in the water not I want to play in the water consonants are not the star the target sounds are excellent now remember to stick around because at the end I'm going to make a sentence that is very commonly used in the American language and we're going to implement everything I'm teaching you let's look at another sentence e now there are a lot of consonants in this word let's but I don't want I don't want to put the emphasis on those consonants let's just focus on the target sound now let's tack on those consonants let's let's barely heard that l barely heard that t let's and that s just touches it at the end we're putting the emphasis on the target let's not let's now next word Aho ah oh making sure those Target sounds are the star uh oh open that up oh you got to keep yourself open and flexible now let's add on the consonants follow again I'm barely touching that F and that L like follow follow because what happens is that when you put emphasis on those consonants they affect the target they dampen the target hence creating that accent versus letting those Target sounds be the star e uh let that be the star now let's add on those consonants each other each other that CH barely touched each other I'm putting so much emphasis on those consonants each other ER put it all together with just the target sounds to review uh-r-o-e-r uh r o e r let's follow each other a lot of accents from different regions of the world and I've taught almost all of them is that they tend to put the emphasis on consonants one thing you have to understand is that when Americans speak they always put the emphasis on the target vowels so by isolating these Target vowels and practicing to emphasize those making those a priority then the consonants just become a frame think of it like a a frame of a picture the picture are the vowel Target sounds the frame are the consonants good now look what happens when I add the consonants thank you all for coming today do you really hear did you hear me hit those consonants hard was it a major component of this first part of the sentence it wasn't it was like an afterthought thank you all for coming today not thank you all for coming today no relax those consonants don't hit them hard relax that tongue relax that soft palate let the target vowels be the star of this show thank you all for coming today don't close that off don't let the consonants take over the star of this show are the targets now let's do that second part let's review just the targets you are one more time again the emphasis is on the target sounds let's lightly add on those consonants but don't put too much emphasis they're there yes but they're not the star of the show I look forward to meeting you all not the consonants I look forward to meeting you no I look forward to meeting you all now let's put it together from the top again still putting the emphasis on those targets framed by the consonants thank you all for coming today I look forward to meeting you all you see that it's all the targets framed by the consonants so if you find yourself hitting those consonants hard like oh coming to thee back it off let those Target sounds resonate open overtake your cavities so that's something good for you to practice when you're reading out loud isolate sounds you could start with just words like responsible just the targets now frame it up with some consonants responsible I'm still putting emphasis on the targets not responsible the consonants are not the star the targets are so Implement that in your everyday practice remember the target sounds are always the sounds that are emphasized in any word Hospital refrigerator indispensable we always land or put the emphasis on a particular Target so when you train your muscles to welcome these sounds and make those sounds a priority you'll realize that the consonants are just an afterthought a lot of my clients are like oh I have a lot of problems with the PS and the L's and the W's we get that and I have videos on this YouTube channel to address those specific sounds but remember at the end of the day when we're talking the emphasis is not put on the W's and the L's and the P's when you're at the level of speaking fluently the target sounds are the star of this show now remember to get access to all of my practice videos
