it's Dr Lori I'm at the Russell home Boutique just next door from the Russell home Thrift Shop come Thrift with me let's talk about what was in your grandmother's dining room it probably was a table like this this is a Duncan F table modeled after a designer in New York called Duncan F in the early 1800s this isn't from the early 1800s this is from the early 1900s and you can see that it would accept if you pull it out it would accept an extension Leaf so you can see everybody in the family whether you want to or not at the holidays and um this particular piece is solid hardwood it could use a little bit of loving care but it is in very good condition um it also has if you look underneath it has very characteristic style of Duncan F two pedestals that hold these ear shapes and the ear shapes have a canthus leaf um designs that are not only on the ear pedestal but also down what are called Spade legs when the legs go out out three tripod legs that go out and you can see the encanis leave come down and then a paw foot and that's called a capped brass paw foot and those show the form of an animal's paw and then like a nit lion for Penn State but um also a brass cap on them so that uh protects the actual wood because of course A lot of times that's would get scratched by people's feet as they're sitting at the table very tradition style it's got these um recess little lines in it carved in and it's a really nice piece it also has a long apron that's called an apron uh this portion that's right above these lines you see this apron portion that's a nice piece too this is a big table and it if the extension leaves are here um this particular table could probably see 1 two 3 4 5 6 7 8 H it could see a lot it could probably see 10 with the extension leaves what do they want for the mAh dining table $200 is what they want for it and I will say it is a typical example of Duncan five but what's not typical about it is the capped brass paw feet the carved in canthus leaf um ped uh pedestals at the bottom um and but it doesn't have its original chairs so that's what's unusual about the table I would say the table is closer to $400 because of those attributes um so $200 is getting it at half price and no it doesn't have chairs so a lot of people look for is it the set I'm looking for the chairs these are not the chairs that go with it these chairs are caned chairs early 20th century um these are probably $40 chairs each in this condition and this style but the table is really quite fine um other things on this table that are kind of interesting uh the Bavarian pink Ro T set you can see there's a lot of these pieces here it's marked Bavaria it's a nice set but they do seem to have one two three four uh sugar and creamer so a lot of the sets um also you can see the Mark here indicating that particular Mark and you can see that what do they want for this set so they want $33.99 for the set um I would say in terms of it uh this set is probably worth in the $600 to $800 range um so for 13.99 that's a little bit high for it but perhaps they have more of the set elsewhere maybe not all of it is out on the table that's possible too I also like on this table um well Crystal we dinging the crystal you hear it that dinging doesn't matter and it doesn't matter because higher quality crystal does not sound better than lower quality quality crystal uh it's all based on someone's ear and what they hear that's an old wives tale from the Antique World but these particular pieces are crystal and they're and they're mass-produced a lot of people have that particular brand they are actually given out as giveaways at Banks and giveaways in grocery stores in the 1970s and 80s um so you'll see this pattern show up a lot if you're looking at if your internet shopping for Crystal stemware they're nice what do they want for them they should be relatively in expensive $35 for the set of four so they're worth about $10 each so that would be $40 so this is a little bit of a barg in here they're worth about 10 bucks each what do I like on this table um I really like the Royal Albert platters I think you can always use a platter whether it's a small platter like this one or a larger platter like these that are sitting on the table and there are two of them sitting on the table of the large platter one smaller platter there is a serpentine design with with a guilt Edge those are real that's really nice and what did I tell you about the flowers on English Ceramics told you there's going to be a repeating pattern of flowers on the edges of English Ceramics and then this one has a big burst um of the floral design here Royal Albert really desirable this one's really quite fine and they want $80 for it and that's for this particular oval platter it's probably 12 in maybe it's 10 in this particular platter I would say for 80 bucks it's easily 250 if you're going to buy it retail so that's a great deal I want to see how much they want for the for the big ones how much they want for the big ones they want 100 for the big ones I take that for the big ones too Royal Albert that's a $300 platter retail so for 100 you're getting it for onethird of what it's really worth and that's a nice piece as well so I like this I like the design I like the white color of the clay and the gilding and the gilding is not worn off so it hasn't been used a lot and there's two of them so you could have a set one at each end of your dining table that's my that's that's a real bargain on the road so these chairs at the top have a curved and car curved and carved crest rail what's the crest rail the crest rail is the big um form at the top and it's like the crest of a wave it goes up and it comes down so that's pretty typical of these types of chairs solid hard wood they have spindle backs but the spindle backs are turned so whenever you see those different shapes within a spindle that means they've been turned on a lathe so what a lathe does is it spins the piece of wood it's like a rod of wood and then a knife goes in or a sharp edge goes in and cuts in takes away certain areas and that's how you get that nice decorative spindle you've got caned seats cane seats are popular throughout the 19th and early 20th century looks like these are the original cane seats on this chair you can see how it's Bowing in at the bottom but these are newly cane a newly caned seat on this chair over here if you look at the um the tightness of the caning on this chair that's how you can tell whether or not you have a newer cane or an older cane um also you can see that it has stretchers but not stretcher bars across the bottom of the chair from side to side but across the front and where the legs are so it goes around the perimeter of the legs and not right across the underside of the actual sea so that's pretty typical of late 19th early 20th century chairs so uh the price here for this chair is $65 you get a 65 a 60% discount here God love them uh so a 60% discount is going to bring that down to lower than $30 and I would say that this chair on the retail Market probably has a value of about $70 um particularly the one that has a very nice cane SE then as you come down you see more caned chairs see this caning needs to be redone you can see how it's coming through and it's got holes and it's got some issues here with the caning this is actually new caning that's now given way um this chair has a carved crest rail too and it looks like little scroll work see that little design looks like a comma that's called scroll work little scroll work design at the front the back has a Splat that goes across not up and down so a cross Splat is what that's called a back Splat and a nice curved Edge right at the seat so you know you put your legs on it your legs have that nice curve it's very comfortable to sit in this chair and then the foot actually comes out it curves outward that chair dates to probably 1920s 1940s that chair they're saying $35 for this chair and they're saying I'm I'm sorry $25 they're selling it as is and that's probably uh just about $5 less this is a $30 chair in this condition so they're still a little bit low on this one this really are these are some Bargains if you can use some old style chairs this chair is painted and a lot of these chairs get painted in the 1960s that was a thing in the 1960s that we see a lot of with these types of chairs oh there's an old chair hanging around so Mom decides to paint it you know you guys aren't the first diyers let me tell you so you've got this notice here you've got a leaf and some fruit fruit is a symbol of prosperity in furniture and antique design so a lot of people will actually see Crest rails with fruit on them because it means oh we're prosperous and we're doing well same kind of backs spat as this older chair why well because it's been painting painted it really is that older chair we've got a um we've got a pety point needle point seat really nice nice this is probably the original from the 1940s the original Petty Point how do you know that you can tell that of course from the actual um from the actual color pattern and also the decoration the contrasting dark seat with the light painted chair was very popular in the 1960s as well I don't know how much they want for this one I don't see a price tag oh no um assuming that they're around the same let's say they're thinking $40 for this chair value on this chair is probably in the $40 range so if they're asking 40 then that's retail I don't know what they're asking and this one is a match to this particular chair these are just the matches but when you're looking at Old chairs you want to look for stability okay so you want to sit on it you want to you know make sure they're not creaking too much and make sure that these areas right here are nice and tight right up here see how tight that is you don't want that to be coming A Part if you can see daylight through that you want to either um tell them maybe you get a discount for it or be ready to bring it to a Furniture restorer who can glue that back or restore it properly
