Old vs New: The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Is Completely New - Here’s What’s Changed From The Old Model!

welcome to Hawaii and we've got something that is a very rare indeed because we're here with Toyota looking at the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma but because this is Toyota we have the old one so this is the classic tfl old versus new video now I've got Andre who's behind the camera who's going to provide the expertise I'm going to provide the color commentary and I can start by saying this one's more colorful Andre you're absolutely right let's start with what's under the hood because there is a big difference between these two uh so I'll open the hood and actually there's more than just a big difference between the two there is actually a weight difference now this hood is made of aluminum and check this out Andre I can lift it with one arm one finger maybe two fingers yeah I'd say one Palm okay but it is substantially lighter than this old one which is by the way also brand new this truck has like 700 miles on it so the question is four cylinder or six cylinder let's find out remember I said this is a direct apples the apples comparison and they're both TRD Sports my friend they are both TRD Sports and they all have something else in common that we'll show you in a second which is also oh my gosh is that heavy well that's a real steel hood that is a real steel Hood so the biggest difference immediately obviously is this has a V6 and this doesn't so what's under the hood of the new one and there is no V6 well the New Gen has a turbocharged power all the way around that's a 2.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and in this case it's made it to an 8-speed automatic oh I'm sorry no it's not Andre they're both manuals and Toyota just like well Jeep yeah it's now a six-speed manual option so you can get this six-speed manual or or this six-speed manual or of course the 8-speed automatic so uh you can get your Tacoma in the 2024 in any number of cylinders as long as they're four right yeah but there is something new about it there's a hybrid version of this as well yep but the size that we need to talk about sizing a little bit and also style because let's talk about style and then hold you can hear the difference in uh how these even close this one is so much of you listen to that that is a big difference bam all right so style wise uh they both have hood scoops yeah that are what they're non-functional they both have hood scoops that are non-functional but of course this looks much more modern right if you look at the recent Toyota design language like in the Forerunner you'll see a lot of resemblance to that much sharper many more angles much more I would say modern and in some ways even aggressive when you put the two together this look this starts to look very old very quickly would you agree Andre yeah but I think there's something very very special because just from a long ways away yes I think they're both unmistakably Tacoma you know what I mean because they just kind of have that shade tape with the horizontal headlamp and they kept kind of the same Motif I would say in the new one let me show you something else that's different look under here remember they got a lot of grief for not having recovery points in the tundra yes but the new one and the big Chen spoiler yes just like the old one they both have recovery points yes now this is the debut of the truck so if you're expecting pricing information or fuel economy we're probably going to disappoint you because we don't have that we do know that the new one will be available Andre starting in about uh what six months just think about it decemberish decemberish well let's compare the beds before we show them the inside so let's look at the bed of the old one so this is a double cap crew cab obviously and the five foot bed like we said this is the sport the sport continues tier the sport model the also of course in the new generation have the SR SR5 it is also now the new pre-runner there's the TRD Pro to the off-road and the trail Hunter and we've got videos of four of them models over at all tfl so check that out now if I want to open this tailgate I have to do it the old fashion but it doesn't fall down so it's damped uh you have a little cubby hole you have a little 400 watt Outlet here and it's composite but I want you to kind of remember what this looks like because they've increased the bed volume yeah because if I want to close it it's a little bit well it's a little bit different than the new one so let me show you the bed of this new one Andre because there's something really cool same thing right TRD sport if I want to open it why don't you do it uh with my elbow maybe no I can't see that but you could push this button on either side look at that and here's something else that's pretty cool you know on the the co on the tundra you could do that on one side here you could do it on both sides so you can push this button or better yet let's say your hands are full of I don't know Lumber your favorite dog concrete bags concrete bags whatever Tacoma drivers carry you can use this you can use your knee and open it up there it is it's closed yeah oh yeah close it up how cool is that huh yeah and of course there's a there's pinch protection in in here there's another button under there so they increase the bed size by about seven percent and you know uh partially they kind of redesigned the way that the interior of this bed is this also is a composite material yeah it's it's Blacker and it's maybe Slicker or this is pre-production yeah and you've got you know you kind of tie down points here as well this is nothing new uh you have a window that is now powered I don't know is the old one power do you remember that is a loud peacock I don't think so but the peacock disagreed with you we can we can figure that out let's head over to the old one and let's look at the Interiors I want to mention one more thing because they increased the wheelbase so we gotta we gotta talk about this even though they did not increase the overall uh length of the truck you see the rear end is more stubby but they pushed out the rear axle about four and a half inches to the back so increasing the wheelbase uh making the turning radius just a little bit a little bit uh larger yes uh but kind of creating a slightly different proportion as well you know what I like I like this little baby spoiler back here I think that's pretty cool and they also of course you talked about Interior right they increased the height of the cab giving yeah so that's what I want to show you guys now classic well before I show you that might as well talk well actually there's too much there's too much but look if you look back here you'll see the this one has disc brakes every grade of Tacoma now has discs no more uh drum brakes in the back some of them have a five-link system some of them have leaf springs and this architecture is tngaf yep which is based you know related to the tundra and the other great thing you get when you do a disc brake is you can do electronic brake right so clears up some space in the console so let's look at the inside so let's start why don't you go in the passenger side I'll go on the driver's side just to verify yep uh that's a drum yep that's the drum okay all right so for all of you Tacoma fans once again no little spoiler here that's why I like the new one and here's the biggest problem for me of course and for a lot of people let me take this out uh it's a seating position Andre you know the problem right so the problem is with the Tacoma and it's been doing this forever when you sit here your legs are right in front of you and your head hits the ceiling you can see my head is hitting the ceiling right now in the new one what they have done is they've actually changed that geometry so that you've got more Headroom and the seat actually goes down lower so the body is still high but the seat is lower so you're sitting more of a true I call it a traditional position look in the chair so yeah so they actually kind of improved they call it heel to hip I believe so actually your hip can be actually positioned a little bit higher so let me show you something else here in terms of gauges of course you want to close the door yeah so here you have aha six speeds six speeds here you have analog gauges and that's what stops beeping so analog gauge is of course very familiar um you know smaller screen smaller screen you have both the volume knob and a tuning knob uh dual temperature controls uh you know they get if you go electronic break you have to have disc brake so that's there as well um you know it's very basic your traditional Toyota layout here if you've driven a Toyota in the last five years or hacked 10 years this will be very familiar and let's face it Andre it's a little bit sea of gray in here wouldn't you say yeah so there's kind of gray on Gray on Gray so it's kind of monochromatic even though there's nice kind of material here on the seat it could be improved okay let me sit in the back so I'm kind of sitting behind myself so let's see how much space we have in the back uh so I'm sitting behind myself here and as you can tell uh oh it's tight yeah your knees are barely fitting your head is it's very tight yeah well because the floating was always important to Toyota right and so they they that's why they try to give you a little bit more clearance so the cab is a little bit taller and under here you have a little bit of a storage space right there yeah uh a little cubby yeah and this is actually a pretty good sized rear view mirror I mean it's not it's not powered though is it manual you sure uh oh I think it is powered Andre I'm pretty sure it's powered because I don't see a way to open it without yeah you're right it should it could be powered exactly I think it is powered uh can you lift uh that little and show the back behind the seat and show the show the difference so when we get to the new one so there's once again a little cubby hole but this actually doesn't go all the way even though there's some clearance here let's eat up yeah so we will show you the new one because that's quite different let's go let's go let's go to the one you've all been waiting for we've got uh horizontal lights we've got round lights there so let me sit down over here and immediately when you get in here Andre you're going to see a huge difference come on in here look at this look at the color in here how about that huh so here's my thing you don't have to make the truck really expensive yeah but inject a little bit of color into it see I love this you can actually have this I think in three different colors this one happens to match you know blue exterior blue interior also now Andre all of Tacomas come with two very important things uh stop start button so no more key which is cool and Toyota's third version right 3.0 over their safety systems on every level of Tacoma and I love that I hate when manufacturers charge more for safety so things that you know save your family's life I believe should be like autonomous you know emergency braking should always be yeah Lane tracing uh radar cruise control right adaptive cruise control pedestrian and motorcycle detection right exactly now here we have three different Drive modes of course too high four high four low uh a bunch of missing buttons If This Were like the TRD Pro or maybe the new Trail Hunter you'd have a locking rear diff you'd also have a disconnectable sway bar all those videos are over at all tfl so be sure to check those out this is kind of a comparison between old versus new and then they had the little handle here yes and then we'll handle there oh you know what handle all right but look at me Andre look at the amount of Headroom I have even with the same sunroof I mean my legs are no longer straight in front of me I feel much more comfortable in this uh this is a little high but that's kind of the latest design language where where the sill is high but if you like resting your elbow on the door sill this is a perfect vehicle to do it and I got to tell you I love the manual transmission in this you also have two USBC ports and a wireless charger and look at these switches how nice are those that's a little bit uh tundra-ish but they're really uh they feel like they're tactile right so you have your HVAC controls here volume knob uh heated seats heated steering wheel vented seats if you had it and of course your new Toyota infotainment 14 inches it's big it's a huge screen and then check this out on me look at that you have a removable speaker that's bluetooth enabled so you can take take this to the beach you can pair it to your phone or you could leave it there for charging and have it as a part of the sound system in the truck pretty cool I know it's in the rivian but I like it there as well yeah it's actually part of the system when it's installed yeah and so let's try the back seat so here's something pretty cool if I can do this so this now folds down right Andre there's another little handle up here yeah I'll pull this one up and then check this out look at that so flat folds flat how cool is that and this is also very clever and very thoughtful what this does is you know when you usually fold these the third occupant seat belt gets in the way so you know it's over here they've actually thoughtfully put it here so it stays out of the way until you need it for instance for a child seats how cool is that if this subwoofer wasn't here you'd have a cubby hole but the question is Andre how do I fit yeah there's still a cubby hole here all right how do you fit let's compare same thing I'm sitting behind myself look at that Andre wait how's that possible they made the cabin well it is possible yeah they made it bigger yeah I don't know it's it's bigger right and I'm not sitting bolt upright I always hate that in mid-sized truck you know but here's what they said being garrageable was very important to them because a lot of customers said I want to put my Tacoma in the garage right so they did not increase the width almost any in the doors the track width is a little bit wider than than the old truck and the overall length is the same like I said so that was important to them yeah I mean obviously many full-size trucks don't fit in the garage and so the reason people buy mid-sized trucks is that they can still fit them in the garage all right so let's go back to the front here and let's look at it one more time I have to say Andre uh we're in the middle of a great time right now if you're in the mid-sized trucks we've got a new Colorado we've got a new ranger and now we've got a new Tacoma and when you compare the new one to the old one I have to say it's a major difference and unlike maybe the ranger the frontier and even the Colorado Toyota has gone I would say full F-150 mode on the new one there are so many different trim levels there's so many different variants right four engine output power yes levels right eight grades you can have different size disc brakes you can have different suspensions I know it's crazy uh so I mean it is a completely new and completely uh more modern truck oftentimes we show these videos and you know they're mild refreshes or mid-cycle refresh this is ground up new and I think this old versus new video really demonstrates that yeah but I'm really happy that they kept the manual transmission they're also going to have it's not here but they're gonna have a two-door version of the cab Optical extra cab with a little bit of space behind it so they kept a lot of things that people asked for right yeah but we designed the entire thing we don't know efficiency yet so I'm still not sure about that because I mean you have more power so you can have a hybrid than this with 326 horsepower versus 278 horsepower in this old truck but is it more efficient that's we don't know well you know when Honda did away with the six cylinder in the Accord a lot of you guys were pretty upset but you know it's been what now five six years that Ford actually started putting twin turbos and everything actually way longer 10 years now right yeah when the EcoBoost came out and now of course we're seeing that in the midsize trucks so it's a Brave New World Andre but I really like this new
