Off Grid Wood Working: The Home Made Rocking Chair

Jesse [Music] it is winter and it is beautiful and it's cold so we're gonna go to Dave's and see if he's in the shop now that Sara's here because I'm here yeah what you're building I'm in the middle of a rocking chair Oh does not look like a rocking chair that's half of a rocking chair hey I feel like maybe he hasn't seen a rocking chair before that's this seat okay is this custom for someone's bump this one uh yeah is this one the one right well I have like a what I call the the standard standard that I visualize as I as which are based on mine remember the time you built me a chair and you have to take all these measurements I still feel uncomfortable about that bend over bend so you bend the final Bend you bended bend over I think some people would be surprised that this type of tool like this was last seen in Braveheart and yet now it's in it's in like a fine woodworking shop that's a fro okay sorry that's one of those tools that start making shingles yeah you just don't want it to be very sharp action okay so it's a good tool for a beginner [Music] wow that's a real piece of wood right there this this beautiful birch is known as the silver tree and youth silver our silver way to cut it up for making a spoon hey hey Dave oh wow you look festive oh girls brought some maple over oh they wanted to know if we split this right they want to carve some spoons going across it or should we do it this well I think either way works it's you're just gonna have a different like the grain will just look a little different one or the other just depends what you're looking for where did you get the maple front or anything are you at liberty to say I got it from uncle Shawn Oh uncle Shawn gives you maple well he doesn't know he gave it to me where'd the tree go maybe the glue this together yeah well you really want to make sure you get those holes in the right spot hey cuz you can't just go ahead and redo those screwed up you kind of like an air traffic controller that way yeah yeah yeah like if you screw up people die what are these red marks is that that's your blunt that's sort of the secret finish that's why this stuff is so expensive hey there's literally a piece of Dave's body that's why I can't do left on each chair I can't do too many chairs per month right I start getting anemic and then I have fancy digital feeler gauges what you do not yep oh and they tell me you mean digital like fingers yeah digits really so that you just told yourself that right there yeah I felt that too pretty high-tech what's a normal kind of duration to make it so I can if I'm not doing other things like a couple weeks you got you get you need a lot of time for parts to dry yeah this is a pole shape looks like a like a Star Wars guy [Music] oh yeah nice it uses their feet to push down on the pedal and then the pedal jams the wood in here yeah jam it in yeah there you go is that as satisfying as it looks when I'm sawing all the action is oh yeah no I totally missed out on that music let's leave up just just roll it up a little bit because I couldn't really see a big smile it's hard to have the drill on here and check that angle but if I have the mirror look watch oh just with your eyeballs yeah but it's easy to see and make your eyeballs [Applause] the secret about people gonna cheer by hand yeah I'm trying to make it perfect that angle yep but it's gonna be slightly imperfect yeah and it's that tension then when you cuz I got to force it all together that makes it it's like a symbol of our relationship that's the tension is what makes it so strong now it's starting to look like something yeah it's still weeks away no no it's not days away yeah let's see how Dave's coming along with the chair that's coming Dave oh man look at any oh right now the chair is like how I look first thing in the morning like right now yeah I love the grain of the birch oh it kinda gets that it's done like a transparent glistening [Music] yeah for some reason that reminds me of a Dutch baby the legs are all trimmed up now the the wedges yep give this little blind pocket here that's cool know what that is why do you always laugh at me that's a blind pocket if that's not a blind pocket I don't know what is here's that steam vent back peace Hey look at this nice handle to hold on do it just feels so good to put your hand on there it's like it's like a fidget spinner for adults this is amazing I feel like a king in this chair really put your heart into this thank you I have nothing else to give would you say you're working for about $7 an hour right now if you weren't here and I was able to go full speed yes I feel like I'm trying to keep the craft alive as well yeah well you're doing something interesting right and you know what a lot of us have done things and we've said to ourselves I'm not really doing anything interesting you guys bring your when your spoons is gonna be gorgeous that's like a serving spoon or yeah what are you making can I see it oh you kinda it's very faint yeah it's gonna be a short fat spoon eh all right let's see it this is that nice piece of maple thanks Sean he's he still doesn't know that he why is he saying thanks why is there a tree missing in my front yard Blaz king yeah one of the original something they should give us money hey we do love blazed king we both have blazed Kings who thinks blaze king didn't have a tattoo your mom would be so mad wouldn't she my mom doesn't watch these but like how these handles like they look identical yeah but they're not no I can feel there's tiny variations yeah number that guy in Jurassic Park and he's hitting on that other guy's girlfriend and they're in the truck and he's like touching her hand yeah any stake holders like these little tiny vibrations and then the cup starts to go and the little ripples in the cup oh yeah all I remember is that the guy was a scientist and he was hitting on that girl but what was really happening was the tea mix was coming enough talk yeah No can't make me I came at that Sun yeah but you won't here hit the turbo boost yeah just hit the turbo boost just hit the turbo boost on the chair it's good let's go strange seeing a man walk through the snowy woods with a rocking chair woah hey man hey how's it going alright well it looks like it's going great look at this thing Wow I just thought Sara's house needed a little something yeah this is super thoughtful hey do you think it'll fit me are these marks from like from Oh from like pencil marks I couldn't get it no but are they like they're from bugs and things oh stop rubbing it in like you keep pushing this it's all birch except for the rockers from around here isn't that interesting though like how if it's all birch it looks so different like the different pieces yeah that's all pretty much from the same tree tree this is like very comfortable so nice update - give it to us how's the rocking action nice smooth yeah it's beautiful yeah hey do I look more I think that's what this chair does makes you feel like you've lost weight no it makes you look like you've lost weight do you got your spoon look at the color in there awesome you could serve like ice cream no way that thing is so cute Wow beautiful spoons girls beautiful chair Dave so uh do you like sitting down I could help you with that these things are well they're just like
