be in the service we used to sing a song back in the day glad to be in the service one more time are you glad to be at the service one more time amen [Music] i want to call your attention to the book of first chronicles first chronicles chapter 28 verse 9. that's first chronicles chapter 28 verse nine uh we'll ushers you can go ahead and let folk get to their seat we'll give them time we'll give them time because folk gotta turn the page in the bible so go ahead we we want you ready for the word amen we'll give you time to get there i'm just so happy to see you amen first chronicles chapter 28 verse nine amen you ought to wave at somebody near you and just let them know that it's good to see them amen amen so good to see you amen there we go we're all in our seats now first chronicles chapter 28 verse 9 and it simply reads as for you my son solomon know the god of your father and serve him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind for the lord does what who searches all hearts and understand and understands all the what intent of the thoughts if you seek him he will be found by you my lord but if you forsake him he will cast you off forever consider now for the lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary be strong and do it amen i'd like to speak to you from this text and from the subject this morning pure intentions you may be seated amen pure intentions i won't be before you long i just want to talk for a moment about pure intentions to god be the glory we finally seem to be headed in the right direction with these covet 19 numbers amen reports came out that over 50 percent of the eligible population in our state is now vaccinated it appears once again that we are beginning to see a faint light at the end of this long dark tunnel but we have lost over 700 000 people to this disease gone in less than two years this number is sadly continuing to grow each and every day and the most painful reality is the fact that most of these deaths now are avoidable the vast majority of people who are in the hospital right now and those who are dying are unvaccinated more and more jobs in schools now are requiring vaccination which means some of the people who are dying eventually would have gotten vaccinated anyway because we're finding out that once people are threatened by the loss of employment there's a change of heart this season of covet 19 this pandemic has been arduous and taxing for everyone all people have gone through all of our lives have been disrupted all of us have struggled all of our churches have survived only by quickly adjusting to a new world of virtual worship and non-traditional liturgy everything has changed even the way we partake in the lord's supper just to make sure that we're keeping everyone as safe as possible as social distancing and pews being empty became the norm this season i have consistently began to reflect and begin to realize over and over again that god is dealing with us i've invited the holy spirit in and asked this comforter in this guide who leads us to all truth to reveal some truth to me that will help me make sense of all this pain and tragedy invited him in and i said lord teach me your ways and he began to evaluate the condition of my heart in my mind and some questions began to arise and i'm going to tell you what some of these questions were because i want to invite you into the inquiry the question arises do you preach just as hard to a vacant sanctuary and do the singers sing just as strong you still dress up in your sunday best on the first sunday just to go sit in the living room do you give your undivided attention to god on sunday morning or are you flipping back and forth to the nfl preacher somebody just put their remote down just there they say oh lordy the cowboys playing the panthers i just thought i was going we won this one day do you still faithfully contribute and cheerfully give even though nobody can see you put an envelope in a basket as it passes by your seat the answers to these questions reveal the conditions of our hearts and the intent of our thoughts if the music ministry is performing for an audience of one and that one being god then their melodies and voices will never diminish because of empty seats if the preacher proclaims the gospel with pure intentions then one repentant soul watching on youtube is worth more than a thousand season saints yelling out amen see king david was a deeply flawed man he was a flawed father he was definitely a flawed husband and he was a flawed king but his motives his intent still made him a man after god's own heart despite his flaws he committed adultery with boshiba had her husband murdered intentionally wasn't an accident wasn't but happenstance he did it to cover his own tracks and to cover his own mess there are some stenches that febreze can't cover you can try to wash it with febreze oh but that smells coming back it's he fled jerusalem because of his son absalom who created a rebellion in an attempt to overthrow his dad he couldn't keep his own house in order and he would not return until after the death of his son and the end of the rebellion david's story was so scandalous that it was censored in the bible david's story appears twice the book of samuel is the first appearance and it gives a true depiction of the great king in all his flaws there was sexual and physical violence passion scandal dysfunction and outrageous moral access but then the book of chronicles said we need to reign this in and censored some of the negative attributes of david and focused more on his spirituality and his milder side how could a man so flawed be mentioned more than a thousand times in the text how could a person who made the mistakes of david be considered a man after god's own heart how could the messiah come through the lineage of such a stench that cannot be febreze away you see god's kingdom operates differently than the world's system the world is a performance based system the world will treat you like an old janet jackson song not that song i was referring to what have you done for me lately i don't know what the praise team was back there thinking [Laughter] mr remember god knows the intentions of your the world operates based on what have you done for me you could have been on that job for 29 years never missed a day came late worked hard and you make one mistake and they will treat you based on what you have done lately you can be a champion in a sport but have a bad season or just one game and they'll be calling you washed up they'll be saying that you past your prime they'll be saying that there's no hope for you that they'll be looking to next season and have given up on you this season and you haven't even made it halfway through because the world just wants to know what have you done if we are honest we even treat god this way the lord will take care of you provide for you heal us in our past put food on the table clothes on our backs give us employment help us when everybody else forsook us and then we run into a new problem and we begin questioning god where are you we begin asking god what have you done for me lately all because lately hasn't looked as good as your past that's why i take comfort in david's words here david had a deep desire to build god's temple to do god's will but because of david's poor decisions he would not be the person god would use to build the temple see god's grace covers us but our actions do impact our witness and there may be certain spaces because of our witness that that that we can't operate in as much as we wish we could it doesn't mean god can't use you it doesn't mean god doesn't love you it doesn't mean any of that all it means is this space right here just isn't your main space of operation of upper operation can i make that plane can i make that plain if you are failing algebra you probably shouldn't be a math tutor i'm i'm just i'm just saying i'm just saying i i i'm i'm just saying if if if you aren't a medical professional or or have not at least studied the official data and verified reports around the covet 19 vaccinations maybe you ought not act like you an expert i i'm just saying i'm just talking about what i'm talking about if if you have never had a healthy relationship maybe relationship counseling is not something you ought to readily offer i'm not saying you not say that god all that is true this is all about where god is calling you to operate and using you to build see there are many people in this world in positions and have self-proclaimed themselves as experts when in actuality just like david their paths may not allow them to operate fully in some of the areas that they are most passionate about david had a deep desire and was passionate about the temple he wanted to build it but god told them you won't be the one sometimes god will give you a vision but your role is to impart that vision to the next generation watch the text god will give you a vision but the role in this particular season david is not for you to build it it's for you to give it the mothers in the church when i grew up understood this because i remember them telling me things guiding me and pushing me and saying things like i won't be here to see it but you've got to do it i i i remember my grandmother when i was in fifth grade i remember sitting at her dining room table and i remember doing my homework and she looked up and stopped working on her crossword puzzle for a moment and told me shane that's what she called me i won't be here to see you go to college but you gonna go she was imparting in me an expectation and pushing me even though she would not be here physically to see me see there are many people in this world who are trying to build what they should be sowing because it's the kingdom which means we're all in this together and you have to know what is yours to build and what is yours to sow what is yours to build and what is yours to give to someone else and encourage them to build god gave the vision to david but david gave the mission to solomon and david could have been all egocentric and say no i have slain goliath and i have killed thousands of men and i am the king of jerusalem the king of israel i'm going to build the temple and he would have failed trying to fulfill a vision that wasn't his mission all i'm saying is sometimes god will give you a vision that is really somebody else's to fulfill david had enough humility to know god's will and that he still had a role to play so david began to sow into solomon's life solomon had to learn from david's wisdom and guidance david had to sow solomon had to receive watch this transgenerational vision solomon in his youth had to posture himself to receive from his elder father and king even though he was a flawed man watch it solomon could have walked back up at daddy and said well god has called me to be king i don't need you solomon could have said what kind of father have you been anyway solomon could have said what kind of husband have you been any way solomon could have thrown all of david's flaws back up in his face but solomon humbled himself and listened to the elder wisdom that was being given to him you've got to see it you've got to catch this you've got an elder who is looking back over his life at all his mistakes and understanding and still has vision and purpose and has given it to a young man who has postured himself to receive humble himself to say i don't know it all give it to me father we must be careful in this season as the elders and as the youth that we are also following this example in the text because the kingdom is about elders sharing and youth listening and following it's about elders bequeathing and giving and the young folk putting hand to plow and beginning to work but too often either the elders are refusing to share and empower or their younger are refusing to listen and build can i say that one more time too often either the elders are refusing to share and empower or the younger are refusing to listen and build david knew what it was like for prior leadership to stand in the way of progress because he experienced it with king saul do you see that and david was determined not to make the same mistake that his predecessor had made with him because he saw how the end of saul's journey was the worst end that one could ask for after being a good king and the first king and so david tells solomon as for you my son in other words i don't care what your friends do can we contemporize this i don't care i'm gonna tell my parents i don't care what those boys and girls that you call friends at your school are doing i don't care what they believe as for you my son know the god of your father and serve him loyally with a loyal heart and with a willing mind for the lord searches all the hearts and understandings all the intent of the thoughts see david keenly understood that his success was not based on his performance it was not performance based no it was rooted in a loyal heart in a willing mind it was all because of his intentions it was all because his intentions were pure see with man things are performance based your job evaluation is not going to give you points for what you intended to do your values tied to your work i'm sure that every panther intends to beat the cowboys today but their intentions will not warrant them aw their performance will determine that that's the reality in the facts of life but the kingdom the kingdom works differently see in the world i can intend to be nice and kind to you but the impact is different i could see that you know a piece of hair is out of place and because i love you and i don't want you to look bad i i i i'll let you know about it my intentions are normal but i could offend you how did he tell me to fix my hair how did he tell me i got lipstick on my teeth my intentions are noble but the impact is hurtful and that's the reality of life and so in life in the earthly realm we have to work hard to make sure that our impact matches our intentions when they miss a lie i'm reminded of a story years ago a friend of mine called frustrated about his marriage he said byron i i bring flowers home to my wife every friday she doesn't even say thank you she doesn't appreciate them i don't feel valued it goes on and on i'm listening and when he stops i go uh let me ask you a question i completely understand let me ask you a question he says yeah does your wife like flowers he pauses for a moment and then i hear him say well yeah don't they all i said um brother you might want to check in on that just to make sure he calls me the next day he says man you won't believe this i go well try me he said she can't stand the flowers she says she's been wanting more time with me and i've been bringing her flowers and she resents the flowers because she feels like i'm trying to pacify her with flowers because i don't want to spend time with her so he said this friday i'm not going to go by the store and get flowers we're going to go out you can have the right intentions but the impact doesn't align with man and woman we have to work to align intent and impact but with god it's all about intent and then he steps in to correct so that we can have the right impact let me show it to you david with all his faults had good intentions when it came to his walk with god he truly wanted to please the lord and knew that his son solomon would have to acquire such an attribute if he was going to be successful in building god's temple and being a good team being a good king my brother and my sister catch this you can have the right plan but possess the wrong motives with god it is better to have a bad plan with the right motives than a good plan with the wrong motives god can easily convict correct and redirect a misguided person who has a loyal heart and who has pure intentions yet a person with great talent and magnificent credentials may find worldly success without eternal reward on that day won't they say lord did we not heal in your name did we not save in your name did we not do miracles in your name we had the right performance we had the right behavior we had the right credentials we had the right praise we knew when to say amen but jesus says depart from me you wicked and servant of iniquity i never knew you your intentions weren't right if your intentions were right i could step in and convict you and aligned you with purpose aligned you with destiny i use david i can use anybody but just because you've got the right plan does not mean you've got the right motives see with god my intent and my impact don't have to align because as long as my intent is right he's going to straighten me up to get the right impact you don't believe me look back over your life at where you started from when you gave your life to jesus i imagine are some things you just shake your head at as i look back at the sermons i preached 20 years ago i go god how in the world did you use that mess how in the world did you use that person in order to proclaim your gospel and he came back and said because your intent because your motive was right i can work with your brokenness i can work with your humanity i can work with your frailty i can work with your weakness what i can't work with is a person whose heart is closed off they've got to get the heart right let me prove it to you some more and i'll take my seat that's why romans 8 28 tells us and we know that for those who love god all things work together for the good for those who are called according to his purpose if my intent is right even that which i have done in the past that was wrong god works for my good so you have to testify like me and you have to begin to boast over how god took you from your wrong and somehow put you in the right direction you have to talk about how god raises up the foolish things of this world to confound the rise you have to talk about how it was in your weak moment that jesus found you lifted you up and started you on your way you have to testify that it's not because of your works it's not because of your credentials it's not because you've dotted every eye and crossed every t it's not because of your performance it's because of jesus performance when i look back over my life if elevation was simply based on performance i wouldn't be the pastor of mount moriah missionary baptist church today because my past performance would have disqualified me but i know i'm not the only one there's some deacons that wouldn't be deaconing right now there are some ministers that wouldn't be ministering right now there are some ushers that wouldn't be ushering right now there are some singers that wouldn't be singing and musicians that wouldn't be playing if it was surely based on my performance i would not be qualified to proclaim the gospel but because it's based on his performance because it's based on my intent so pastor what is the intent the intent we have to have is simply this god have your way that's it god not my will be done but thine will that's it god move me out the way so that you can have your way that's it god decrease me so that you may increase in me that that's it god deliver me from my own emotions that would get in the way of me doing your will that that's it god correct me along the way if i go the wrong way that's it god let me only say what you want me to say walk where you want me to walk pray the way you want me to pray study the way you want me to study god show me who i need to be free and show me who i need to walk away from god wake me up and start me on my way god for you i live and for you i die that's it that's it you don't have to know all the scripture memorized you don't have to know how to pray like the deacons you don't know how you don't have to know how to sing like the music ministry all you have to do is say god have your way in my life god have your way in my family god have your way at my job god deliver unto me a clean heart and renew the right understanding god i just want pure intentions that's it it's not based on our performance because jesus has already performed the appraisal has already been given he is already marked high in every category he was sinless he gets attend he walked according to the spirit's guidance he only did what he saw his father doing in heaven you get a kid he was a loyal son a great pastor he was an amazing man and he died a free man because they didn't kill him unless he gave himself because jesus is a king and a lord he paid our debt he saved my soul and by his stripes i've been made whole he carried that cross to set me free and i'm here today because of his grace twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relieved how precious did that grace appear that hour i first [Music] or may [Music] sing grace how sweet the sound that save the red like me i want well but now i'm found was blind but now i see can i get a witness is it his grace that helped you is it his grace that changed you is it his grace that saved you do you have strength because of his grace not my words but his when i come to this table i'm reminded it's his body that was broken for me it's his blood that was sad for me not my words not how much bible i know not how many degrees i have but his works he died he lives life [Music] so it's just about pure intentions you don't have to have it all figured out you just have to have to have a willing heart willing mind you you don't have to have it all figured out you you don't have to be perfect all you have to do is say god have my own way have that own way have the unknown way have none own way have the unknown way have the unknown coming away [Music] yes no no way so [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] say god search the corridors of my heart but y'all hear that too though clean me up clean me up so my intentions are pure show me oh god where i'm doing it just to please man i'm not doing it to show you your how much i love you and want to please you show me show me [Music] show me where my intentions show me [Music] as a husband were my intentions [Music] show me as a wife where my intentions as a mother as a father show me as a spiritual leader as a pastor show me god and my job show me show me show me show [Music] and clean up whatever mess you find i just want to please you [Music] i just want to hear you say well done one day that's all i so god you can take this world all that it claims to be fortune and fame [Music] i will gladly exchange just to give your name the praise [Music] and god [Music] help those situations where our intentions were good but the impact [Music] was bad [Music] teach us and show us convict us and guide us so that the impact aligns with the pure intention [Music] god we pray for every household every individual every person under the sound of my voice [Music] and for that one today who says i need to surrender my life to jesus christ for that one who says i need to rededicate my life and surrender all to him if you need to give your life or rededicate your life with every head bowed every eye closed say these words say father i am a sinner and i confess today that jesus the christ is my savior and lord say i believe that his performance [Music] carried my sins and has made me whole say i believe by his stripes i am healed my soul is set free [Music] i'm delivered and i am a child of the most high [Music] god i pray for each and every one of us as we journey through this road it's so easy for stuff to get in our hearts [Music] to begin to steer our intentions the wrong way none of us are immune from that god but just like david we know if you send your word of correction [Music] as long as our hearts truly desire you you'll make the crooked path straight so straighten every crooked path oh god [Music] heal every broken body [Music] heal every sickness comfort every person who is grieving [Music] continue to walk with us give us the strength to walk with you in the name of jesus the christ we pray and together we pray that prayer that our savior told us to pray our father [Music] give us this day our daily bread forgive us our trespass as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us thine is the key the power and the glory forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever amen amen come on and bless the lord [Music] come on and put your hand over your heart and just say pure intentions pure pure intentions come on at home put your hand over your heart pure pure [Music] your faithfulness and for your cheerful hearts a member of our document is going to come at this time to pray over the tides and offering i invite you if you have them with you to put them in your hand amen you can put your phone in the air you can put your hand in there wave it around like you just know i'm just kidding don't do that everybody at home put your hand in the air put your phone in the air we're believing god giving is a spiritual thing it's a faith thing the intent matters if you got nothing else out of sermon here the intent of your giving will connect you to blessings that far surpass the monetary amount and so make this a faith thing in this moment as we get ready to give give because this is about building god's kingdom doing the will of god that lives will be transformed and changed and souls will be saved let us pray father god we come before your holy presence this morning father first of all just thank you for the opportunity to give back a portion of what you blessed us with we thank you for those who have a mind to give god and those who are who want to give god not and are not able to do what they want to but father we just thank you for you for your faithfulness god that what we give father to a blessed father some 60 some hundredfold god let it be used for the building of your kingdom in jesus name amen amen to god be the glory come on and bless his name we will prepare for this time at this time for the lord's supper if you have to give today as you exit later as you exit the sanctuary later on your way to your vehicle you can give our deacons or walk-in deacons will be at the exits with baskets and they will collect the tithes and offering at that time amen let us prepare [Music] please join me in the reading of the church covenant [Music] amen let us stand and read together our church coming having been led as we believe by the spirit of god to receive the lord jesus christ as our savior and on the profession of our faith having been baptized in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit we do now in the presence of god angels and this assembly most solemnly and joyfully into covenant with one another as one body in christ we engage therefore by the aid of the holy spirit to walk together in christian love to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness to give it a place in our affections prayers and service above every organization of human origin to sustain this worship ordinances discipline and doctrine to contribute cheerfully and regularly as god has prospered us towards its expenses for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us the relief of the poor and the spread of the gospel throughout the world in case of difference of opinion in the church we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit and if we cannot unanimously agree we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern we also engaged to maintain family and secret devotion to study diligently the word of god to religiously educate our children to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance to walk circumspectly in the world to be kind and just to those in our employ and faithful in the service we promise others endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith we further engage to watch over to pray for to exhort and stir up each other unto every good word and work to guard each other's reputation not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others to participate in each other's joys and with tender sympathy bear one another's burdens and sorrows to cultivate christian courtesy to be slow to give or take offense but always ready for reconciliation being mindful of the rules of the savior in the 18th chapter of matthew to secure it without delay and through life amid evil report and good report to seek to live to the glory of god who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light when we remove from this place we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of god's word amen let us hear now the word of the lord 23-33 for i have received of the lord that which also i delivered unto you that the lord jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks he break it and said take eat this is my body which is broken for you this dude in remembrance of me after the same manner also he took the cup when he had sup saying this cup is the new testament in my blood this do ye as often as ye drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you do show the lord's death till he come wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the lord but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup for he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drink of damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body for this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep for we would judge ourselves we should not be judged but when we are judged we are chastened of the lord that we should not be condemned with the world wherefore my brethren when you come together to eat tarry one for another god's word for god's people please right here for a moment of prayer the heavenly father i pray that you'll bless the bread dear god that we're to receive today father i pray that you'll consecrate the
