hey everyone joe here in today's video i want to show you how you can set up audio ducking in obs studio 27 now this is actually pretty easy but you're probably wondering the big question is what is audio ducking and what is sidechain compression well this is a technique that broadcasters started doing many many years ago to actually lower the volume and stuff on their music when they actually start speaking that way when the actual broadcaster is speaking they got music going background it automatically lowers the gain on the music so you can hear the broadcaster on the radio station so anyway streamers started using this many uh quite a few years ago and it's actually one of the best ways to balance out your audio it for your streams and everything that way you can play your music up pretty loud when you're really into fast-paced gaming stuff but when you speak it automatically lower it for you right there on the spot hey that was completely hands-free and it's a great way to improve your audio for your streams that said let's hop over here to obs studio 27 and i'll show you how to set this up okay everybody so now i have obs 27 open up here on the desktop now i had to use audio ducking on both my game and my music the only real difference is the amount of compression i use which i use a higher one on my game now like i said obs 27 has this built in it's really easy to set up now you do want to pay attention here i actually have my microphone volume as you can see here it's kind of peaking around negative five you know db to negative six db and that's how i got my audio set pretty high and the settings i'm going to give you for the audio ducking stuff kind of is built around that so if you want to know how to get your audio sounding real good for your microphone stuff and how i got everything set up do check out my audio tutorial i have linked up in the cards above and that said let's uh set this up right quick so it's pretty easy just right click on your music or your game i'm gonna set up music first and let's go down to filters and choose filters alrighty now you notice we have no audio filters set up yet see the little plus sign down here that's how you can add the minus sign is how you can remove them so let's go ahead and click the plus sign here and the first one on the list here is compressor just simply click on it and we want to name this one music compressor or music ducky matter of fact i just better choose music ducking okay now the ratio they have set here 10-1 little too high i don't use ten to one i actually prefer like a five to one however uh when i do play my music and stuff what i normally do is uh it breaks and stuff when i'm away from the computer or like the interlude of the music stuff when the stream's starting i have playing around negative 12 db when i'm doing like fast-paced gaming you know running some raids some mythic plus keys a world of warcraft or something that nature i normally have the music going about negative 18 db and that's when i'm not speaking that much when i got normal gameplay going on i normally use the music volume around negative 24 db that way it's still pretty uh loud but it's not really loud loud but slot enough players can really hear it but if i want to say anything you can easily push it down but when i am carrying all my conversation and stuff and talking to people i do lower it down to negative 30 db alrighty so that's normally what i use for the music and stuff now the threshold is going to be based around my microphone game since i like i said i peek out my microphone around negative 6 to negative 5 db and the threshold i want to set negative 30 db now you can actually type this in just negative 3 dial it in real uh right on the spot and what's going to happen here is any time that my microphone volume gets above negative 30 db it's automatically starting applying a ratio of five to one to the music and lowering it down this will help let you be able to hear you know when i speak and push music down but still not too too low and i'll demonstrate that here in just a moment now the attack here i like to use 100 milliseconds now what the attack is is what uh how it responds how the compressor responds when you speak so when you start speaking it responds with one tenth of a second which is 100 milliseconds now this is still pretty fast i like to keep it fairly fast but you don't want to get too fast like it originally had negative six or hadn't had six milliseconds in there which would sound really unnatural you don't want that but you don't want to go too slow either because if you do the the music can start muffling out the first part of your sentences when you start speaking so 100 milliseconds to as low as 250 milliseconds at the most i prefer 100 milliseconds just choose and see what fits you uh best now release i like the release as slow as possible and 1 000 milliseconds which is one second is what i use and that's the maximum you can have to use in the compressor here now what this does is after you stop stop speaking stuff it takes a full second for the music volume to go all the way back to max this is very helpful when you're doing sentences and speaking like i am right now that the music doesn't try to jerk up too fast didn't have to come back down it could sound choppy this keeps your music sounding real smooth and nice and pleasant alrighty the output game i don't change anything on it it's fine don't mess with it but the side chain uh ducking source we gotta find the microphone now if you're using a blue yeti find the blue yeti mine is labeled microphone because that's what i set it up and labeled it as in the uh for the tutorial but find out whatever source is your microphone and choose that because that's what the signal is going to listen to to be able to know how to comply the uh the ducking and stuff you know compression on here so like i said i'm gonna demo this for you so let me actually uh i'm actually gonna click on the little eye here says music duckings and turn the uh you know the compressor off a second and let's start playing some music yeah vlc up here and start playing some music [Music] and okay so now you're hearing what the music stuff sounds like with no compression and i'm running like a negative 18 db on the music here so it's not too loud as you can hear it's still still pretty you know it kind of muffles out what i'm speaking now let me turn on the music ducking here and as you can notice this is easily pushing down from like negative 18 db pushing it down to round that 35 to negative 30 db and you can tell this makes it easier for you to hear what i'm speaking while still letting the music play in the background alrighty and you'll notice when i quit speaking the music actually comes back up okay so i start speaking it pushes it back down really helpful now like i mentioned if you want to increase the ratio of which your music is pushed down you can simply bring it back up and bring it up to say 20 to here and as you can see that really pushed the music down quite low here it's pushing down around negative 40 db and so it works perfect quite well so anyway yeah i use a five to one at least for my uh music and stuff that's pretty much also what i use when i'm making any of my videos stuff and uh in davinci resolve as well all right now i mentioned i also use the same one on my game only differences is the ratio so let's close this one right quick and let me turn the music off alrighty so now let's go back over here to game i'm gonna go to filters again now so hit the plus sign hit compressor i want to type in game ducking hit okay threshold i'm going to use negative 30 again because i like to keep it consistent attack 100 release 1000 side chain ducting source microphone again now for the ratio here of the game i'm put seven to one now that's because i normally have my game audio always around negative 24 db so it's very consistent that way you know your viewers streaming everything here the game audio but it's not overbearing but soon as i start speaking it does push it down a little bit more than with the music and which is kind of helpful because a lot of times the music's more you know background oriented it's not over uh it's not trying to step in front of your words and stuff whereas if you get like explosions and a lot of gunfire or other characters yelling on the screen that can kind of get muddied in with your words and stuff a little bit more so you do want to use a bit more higher compression on your game one but that's it folks that's how easy it is to balance out your uh audio and stuff in obs studio 27 and make your streaming and audio sound just so much better but anyway that's it for this video like i mentioned you do want to check out my other audio tutorial on how to get your microphone audio to sound really professional using free vst plug-ins and stuff that would work great in obs studio 27 and anyway that's it folks if you like this video have a give me a thumbs up thumbs up so is highly appreciated now if you're not a subscriber to my channel now's a great time subscribe subscribing's free it's for you unless you know when i release more videos until next time everyone thank you for watching
