well this is richard at precision transmissions today we got a 48 re training out of a 2004 uh dodge diesel four-wheel drive uh they brought it in from dallas uh they had it rebuilt into us a while back and it just doesn't seem to last very long they pull a big fifth wheel uh trailer they're gonna head to the nascar race uh this coming weekend so we're gonna get this thing built the tour down and built up for them but we've already noticed when we got it out uh the converter's already cooked it's just got a stock torque converter in it uh we can offer him a single billet converter that they get rid of these lugs that break off it'll be just a flat face here with a big a single clutch a bigger clutch or we can go back with a triple disc has three clutches in the toilet with this customer uh he wants the three clutch so we're going to put a triple disc in this uh and fix that problem right there now we are also the flywheel uh is wore out where this converter be mounts up to the flywheel right through here uh we're going to put a billet flywheel in this thing too because the villa fly was cheaper than an oem so we'll get that part fixed too and get rid of the flex scene and stuff like that that's on the flywheel [Music] these little bolts right here anytime you take these apart you want to kind of just shock them hit them with a little bit of a hammer just a little smack because they're really bad about stripping so if you just do that one time they will come right out i already loosened them but i want to just kind of smack them with a little hammer and loosen them up because they will strip out really easy now this uh training come in with leaks everywhere the customer didn't know where it was he thought it was leaking around the pan but actually the overdrive housing's correct he had the front drive shaft repair with a rear view joint on the front driveshaft broke and that causes uh such a bad vibration that it breaks his [Music] housing [Music] woof a lot of pressure on this housing right here because uh when it goes into overdrive there's a piston in here that tries to push these apart every time it goes into overdrive so there's always a lot of force trying to push this housing off i'll get this apart and show you what i'm talking about because when we build these we build them in two pieces and then we slide them back together there's so many in play and clearances you have to set in this unit it's unreal it usually takes me about seven hours to build one uh this is the output speed sensor right here the two two-wheel drives have them here too same spot this training is really an amazing unit it operates this one piston right here does two things it applies the overdrive clutch and it pushes off the direct clutch in here there's two sets of clutches in here but this piston does both things it pushes one on and pushes one off at the same time so if it ain't set the clearances ain't set up perfectly in here then you can burn them clutches up just by that piston uh pushing that one clutch on and not pushing that other clutch off in time so you really got to know what you're doing here with these it takes a long time to set these up we've been doing them a long time i just did one another day that made 1200 horsepower uh 2400 foot-pounds of torque we took the they took the six feet out and put a 48 re in it it held a lot stronger and better units and you can see here these overdrive clutches are just cooked so we're going to take uh this piston this plate here out and put a special plate in here and we're going to take and leave this one snap ring out right here by leaving this one snap ring out and getting this special plate we can add one more clutch to this overdrive pack now when you do that uh if you have a tv motor up here instead of a cable uh and a tow haul button it'll cause a harsh downshift so if you've got a tv motor you don't want to do it because it will cause a harsh downshift but if you've got a tv cable you can do it and it won't affect the downshifts at all it works really really nice you don't want a customer complaining about a harsh down kick now we had a customer come in the other day we did a service on one of these these snap rings are bad about breaking you always want to replace them we found a half moon of this uh snap ring in his pan so once it starts beating it out it'll get wrapped all up in here and wadded up like a a noodle in here so these do break now right here you're probably not going to be able to see it because i have to air pressure and stuff this crack is right above this bolt right here is where it's at right through here you can't see it but i can hook put air on it on the back side and i can blow bubbles through there probably no you can't see it but that's what happens uh on that when the drive shaft uh u-joints get bad on these dodges they'll break this housing right here it's right here that's it these housings from the dealer about 400 450 but this one cannot be welded it will not we've already tried it done it won't work now this here's your overdrive direct clutch that's in here this thing's got a 800 pound spring in here that applies this clutch instead of hydraulic oil they use a spring but this piston right here is what pushes this bearing and pushes the spring down and pushes that clutch off or on so i got to put this in a press to get this apart to get this snap ring out of here it's real dangerous we have to do it over here on the other side of the shop i'm not going to do it in this video but it's a real dangerous thing so now this is the overdrive piston overdrive direct piston it does two things like i was telling you anytime we rebuild as we update this support back here in the back i'll show you in a minute in the video what the new one looks like when they went to throttle by wire with these units they kind of messed them up really i like them better with the tv cable it's a lot better to adjust you don't have tv timing issues with the gas pedal stuff like that when they first come out with shift kits for the uh tv style motor uh they didn't upgrade they made it tuned for the motor but not the training so it really messed with the real big so they finally come out where they tune the motor in the train at the same time it's an option so this is your intermediate band adjustment right here your second gear band adjustment we build it back it you turn that in and set the band adjustment now all these cooler line fittings here do have a rubber o-ring down in the bottom here you can see there's a brown rubber rubber o-ring right there you already want to replace that that was all tore up also uh this one here don't have it but most of the time there's fluid in this connector and it will cause all kinds of weird shifting to burn the up so you always want to replace that whether it's got fluid in it or not because if you don't it'll have fluid in it six thousand miles or so it looks like a v this is a 47 re it don't have the the uh ring on the stator right here uh it's a converter drain back and better lock up stuff like that so it's probably tempting to get them apart start messing now this does have a real nice ats pan on it we love these pants just keep the filter off the bottom okay i think he said a few of these case bolts are stripped but i know the bolts aren't very good yeah probably on and off once or twice sorry i didn't get that fan bolts out now i'm gonna try to get him out for you guys hmm hey now we really like these ats pans because of the deepness and the fins that keep all the trash away from the filter so if you ain't got one get you one they work really nice and the ebay pans aren't as good either probably now we do have our governor pressure sensor and solenoid right here uh that the earlier design uh was a round solenoid of a black plastic one this one here looks the same but these all have to be replaced every time you do it though but you can't wash these things and solve it and you'll ruin them now the temp sensor for this too on this one here is right in here in this connector right here the temp sensor these are your shift cylinders your overdrive your lock-up solenoids and your governor sensor and your governor pressure now anytime we rebuild these we replace this plastic piece right here this is what uh tells the this switch on the outside right here uh it pushes this in like this and puts it on the dash to park reverse neutral drive and stuff like that what makes it light up turns your back up lights on and stuff like that these are really bad about wearing you can see the little line all the way across here it'll usually just wear plumb out right here then it'll get into this metal piece and lock it come down we can't move the shifter so where was this thing right here this ball is uh the detent ball you feel it clicking well that ball right there wears at the end of here and we put one in there that's a sleeve about that long that uses the whole piece instead of just just a ball so that's another upgrade i've never seen one a 47 re with this spring in there especially in the diesel so i don't know where that come from uh somebody built it or put it in there because the train's been built before but the shift kit we got we're putting it will come with a different one here won't be one here and we'll replace this plastic with aluminum one that where we know it ain't gonna break knock out the shifter seal that's on this piece like that i like that this seal doesn't normally leak but there's a seal in this shaft right here that does leak so today release other shifter sensors normally not this one's usually this one in here so this is your reverse bands servo this is your intermediate band servo i'll still i'm gonna try not to blow fluid now basically when it goes the second gear foot comes in here and pushes on that band watch this lever right there i got the band out of adjustment that's why that's coming out so far normally it'll only move about this far but since i was loosening that band anchor but this is your reverse one here this should just come up today say that take that out they do make an updated one of these uh it's a lot thicker in the middle uh some of the 48 res you bump the pressure up really high it's capable of bending that so we don't bump the pressure up on these max because uh it's bad about pushing the converter out and knocking the thrust out of the motor so you got to be really careful on how much you turn these up [Music] now you want to look at these pumps for wear here this is your lock up ring right here and stuff you want to look at that any type of wear we'll be putting high pressure rings here look here for any type of wear any you see it's a little the darking is gone but it's still in really good shape same way with the pump gears you want to check for any type of wear looks really good we'll put new gears in there but you definitely want to check if you notice this gear has a chamfer on this side and a flat on this side you always want to put the chamfer towards the torque converter that way it slides in if you put it this way it's harder to get the torque motor in it'll go in either direction but that's where it goes 48 re's also have special pump bushings they have a a dimple pump bushing to where it holds a lot of oil on the bushing you see the dimples in there you don't want to put a fabric or anything like that in there because it won't work it don't last now this is the intermediate band the second gear band that dodge uses i mean it's plump wore out there's just nothing left it's almost down to the rivets now when we go back with our band we like to use the early style 727 three-speed band it puts a lot more material on the drum well this band to me is just really a bad design so we put the three speed 727 band in there and it's just a lot better band now being at this uh doesn't have a tv motor or anything like that uh we can take this wavy snap ring out and put a standard flat snap ring in here like this one here this is out of a 350 case but it'll go right in there and that just firms up third gear so much better when you get rid of that wavy just that one thing get rid of that wavy it does firm up reverse a little bit but these still they have a pretty decent stall converter from factory so you'll never know it but it does firm up third gear now if you look at third gear here this is really amazing what i just found now this is the third gear clutch pack well they put the forward clutches in it the clutches that's in this stuff let me take these out here now now when they went to the 48 re they did change the teeth pattern up on this clutch here but on the early models the forward clutch had this stop style of teeth well on the 48s they didn't change this teeth in the direct drum so the forward clutch will fit into the direct drum but this material ain't designed for to come on under a high load it's only designed to come on when you just put it and drive when the motor is idling so but if you get over here this is a clutch that's designed to come on under a high load it's got the disc to kick the oil out and stuff like that see so we go back we'll go back with the right clutches but you can see here they put forward clutches in this drum so cook the steel but if you get over here the forward clutches you know that's the natural color they got some wear on them but they're you know they're still alive you want to look in here for any type of wear make sure there's not a lot of up and down that's that's that's good right here if you get any more excessive then this bevel needs to be replaced [Music] it has a plastic ring right here and then this bevel right here now we're going to change this out because they make multiple different styles this is the weakest one they make to me it should never be putting a diesel the one i put in there it's the fingers are totally a lot bigger and stronger so you can put a lot more pressure to it without bending it and it not going back because this bend supplies the clutch and then it bows back so we want to get rid of that and then here's your piston let's see that that sets on now this is your forward your input shaft that moves it forward we changed a lot of these to billet this isn't the biggest one they make it is a little bit smaller one so we're not going to be changing shafts or anything like that the third gear drum looks really good where the rings run there's no wear just little shiny marks put a new bushing in here it's got the five clutch it's got the snap ring all the way to the top they make them where the snap rings a lot lower a gas one and you've got to be careful you'll pull them out of these diesels and find out they put a gas drum in it the snap rings down to here and you can only get four or five clutches in there when they do that so now this does have uh six pinion diesel planets in it uh this is a selective washer here that comes different thicknesses you can set your end plate this is one of them here there's one right here this comes with different thicknesses here to set in play we get them in here sometimes where they put aluminum ones here and they will physically break they'll strip right out here look at the front planet first and see what it looks like you want to check all these gears and make sure they don't wobble all the way around clean them up spinner for any type of noise this here is a six tab washer they make a five tab if you have a five pinion you have a little spacer there a little plastic spacer that keeps this for touching then you have another washer here this is not selected neither but you want to look at this sun gear for wear on these teeth we replace every one of them with a brand new one i mean no matter what because it's hard to see them but if they get hot or anything like that it can mess them up we just replace them you see there's little bitty pits on these gears and stuff you want to replace that stuff now it's kind of amazing here diesels you know they pull so much weight off the starting line when when they take off from a red light or something like that they upgraded these washers to six tab and great big they used to be little thin ones like this uh but they still i'm gonna show you how much load that this washer puts on it it puts so much force on this washer it embeds it into this planet you can physically feel where it embedded it into that planet where it pushes on it so hard if it wasn't for oil on this it'd just burn it plumb out so they put a ton of oil in here but look at the load that it puts on that washer from the dodge diesel now this is uh the washer that takes a load in first gear when you take off when it's bracket here it goes to this washer you can see here but look at the load what it did to that washer here and seeing this washer goes on the top of this planet where this one went on the bottom but if you look at the washer again look at the load it put on that washroom from pushing it so hard against that planet if it didn't have oil in there i mean this oil that we use nowadays is just phenomenal so pretty crazy now when we go back with this we'll put a brass washer right here that says this plastic one will upgrade this hub uh if you look here where it's already got metal in it and already started tuning it up here now there is a sprag that runs right here you can see this frag it's a plastic let me dig it out of here this is a one-way bearing uh it lets this spin one way and lock the other direction uh it looks in good shape but you can see where metal got in here and started to mess it up right here i'm going to show you right here now this is that support i was telling you that we upgrade to this one right here to the new one here it puts a seal right here where it puts a lot of pressure right here on this bushing in here because there's no bearing enough that it just runs aluminum to metal but it gets cooler line oil that comes right out of the cooler at the rear cooler line in the back right here when that oil comes in it goes right into this chamber and comes right into here and then lubricates the rest of so it gets cool oil instantly but if the torque converter fails like this one does that oil that comes back in goes right straight to here pumps metal into here and destroys this piece here and and choose this thing up here too see so update that's this update for you uh rebuilt before they did a pretty terrible job we'll get this thing uh striking back out the way it's supposed to be get a good triple disc converter in all new bushings and stuff like that get this man back to dallas if y'all need anything give us a holler precision transmission back to the the video again we kind of forgot something here to pull out the reverse band and show you what this band looks like the early designs just had a single wrap band it's just a little narrow one uh they got away from it really bad because uh the dodge diesel has a little higher uh gear ratio in reverse than it does forward and they would slip that band so they went with this big old massive band so we get them in here sometimes that that has a really low stock converter and they don't want to back up because the gear ratio in reverse is so much higher on this unit than it is when you put it first gear and take off and they don't want to back up big trailers and stuff like that so they just put them in four wheel loaded back up because of that reason because they like the converter that we put in there it's a lot lower stall and pulls a lot better so if anything give us
