assalamu alaikum guys hello  everyone i hope you're okay   as you can see a little bit of a  different start to the video today   i'm in a wooded conversation a wooded conversation  wooded conservation a wooded conservation area wow i can't even talk wooded conservation  conservation it doesn't even sound like   a word now you know when you say a word so  many times and it just loses all meaning   anyway i'm in a forest type thing which is  uh around a five minute walk from my house so   i like to come here quite often there is a  park off to the side um so we might hear some   kids shouting and it's a little bit of a windy  day so no idea how the sound's going to turn out   apologies in advance seeing as it's the month of  ramadan pretty soon well by the time this goes   out it probably would have already started  but it's starting tomorrow or the day after   and i definitely won't have this  edited by then but i always hear like   misconceptions and just random things about it  so i just wanted to chat about that a little   bit and i also want to talk about the books  that i plan to read for the ramadan readathon   which is a month month-long readathon and i'll  put all the links to that in the description   so first things first what is ramadan ramadan is  a month in the islamic calendar which is based   on lunar months so every time you see a new moon  is when a new month starts and ramadhan is a name   of the ninth month in the islamic calendar one  of the most common facts about ramadan that you   probably know already is that muslims will fast  from sunrise to sunset every day for the whole   month but the aim isn't to starve yourself it's  about increasing your spirituality and becoming   closer to god and forming that connection with god  and to kind of empathise with those who are less   fortunate than yourself personally i see it as a  way of resetting myself literally almost as if i'm   pressing a reset button on myself so physically  i'll cut out all the caffeine and sugar content   in my diet i've actually started weaning myself  off of it already just so that i don't get those   sugar crashes and caffeine withdrawal headaches  and spiritually i find it quite grounding like   i feel really appreciative is appreciative a word  appreciative appreciate appreciating oh its a a verb   not having a very good day with my words today  but i feel really appreciative i feel grateful for   all the things i have in life so here's a  few things that i just wanna and these are   things that people have actually asked me that i just wanna clear up and bust any myths   so the first one is you can't swallow  your own saliva when you're fasting   this is just fake news like this is not true  at all like your saliva is produced by your   glands your salivary glands all the time  like constantly so you would constantly be   spitting it out so yeah you can swallow your own  spit if you're fasting like it doesn't break your   fast something else that people have asked me is  what happens if you forget you're fasting and you   eat or drink something by accident well that's  never happened to me like i've never forgotten   that i'm fasting but it has happened to a couple of people that i know and if it does happen i   mean if it happens it happens if you forget you  forget and you eat something but your fast is   still considered valid because it was completely  unintentional obviously of course you have to   stop eating or drinking as soon as you realize  like you can't just finish off your cup of tea   just because you're halfway through it i think  i'm gonna find somewhere to sit because this   walking and talking business is uh getting me  out of breath another thing that i get asked   is not even water? you can't even drink water  when you're fasting? and this one is true so   you can't drink water when you're fasting do  not get thirsty well yeah you do get thirsty   but there's things you can do to help and like  there's some common sense things like i wouldn't   go planning on running a marathon or i mean i  wouldn't run a marathon anyway but i wouldn't   do like a hardcore session in the gym or even  day-to-day stuff like moving furniture around or   i don't know going for a hike or a long walk in  the hot sun or anything like that anything that   makes you sweat um save those things for when  you're not fasting or later on in the day also i   just want to mention here that if you're fasting  and you're experiencing signs of dehydration   like dizziness or fainting like if you're  fainting come on you need some sustenance so   you are allowed to break your fast if you're  fainting and if you have a health issue that   prevents you from fasting altogether then yeah  you don't have to fast but otherwise yeah during   long hot summer days fasting can be difficult  but for millions of muslims around the world   who haven't yet fainted or ended up in hospital  it is completely fine so the last misconception   that i want to talk about is quite a funny one  really considering bearing in mind that this is   something that somebody has actually asked me okay  so they've gone wait you can't eat or drink for   a whole month like come on like use some common  sense man isn't it like two or three days that if   you go without water your body will just shut down  you won't even survive so yeah i don't know where   they got that one from but yeah it's sunrise to  sunset it's british summer time right now and   where i am in england that will be fasting from  around 4 00 a.m ish to about 8 p.m ish obviously   some of those hours you're sleeping anyway and  if you're anything like me you'll be taking a   couple of naps in between as well okay back home  now so let's talk about some books and i want to   talk about the books that i'm planning to read  for the ramadan readathon and i want to read   books that are specifically by muslim authors and  i don't know if i'm going to read all of these but   basically i'm just going to choose from this list  so the first one that was supposed to be on my   readathon tbr was other words for home by jasmine  warga but i've already read it i ended up reading   it last week i don't know how that happened i  think it was just staring at me and i just had   to read it so yeah anyway i thought i'd mention it  here because i really enjoyed it i think it's got   some deep lessons for a middle grade but yeah  let's talk about that one in my april wrap up   so properly now the first one on my tbr list for  the readathon is amal unbound by aisha saeed this   one's about a young girl who has big dreams but  she ends up becoming a servant for a rich family   so i'm really intrigued by that synopsis really  interested to see where that's going so definitely   checking that one out the next one on my tbr is  the beauty of your face by sahara mustafa i think   this is her debut novel and this one's about a  school shooting in an all-girls school and i just   want to read it for that really i don't think i've  ever read a book about a school shooting so i'm   hoping this was going to be quite an interesting  read we hunt the flame by hafsa faizal has been   on my tbr for so long this one gives me kind  of like mulan vibes like mulan crossed with   robin hood so the protagonist here is  disguising herself as a man in order to   feed her family feed her people what's putting me  off is that it's a series and i don't really want   to start a series right now and it has an enemies  to lovers trope so if that's your thing then   definitely check this one out but i don't really  know if i want to read that right now so i don't   know i might read it let's see what happens moving  on to another one that i don't really know if i   want to read right now is a very large expanse  of sea by tahereh mafi so i've seen this one   around quite a lot actually the story's set just  after 9/11 and the protagonist is a girl who is   tired of being stereotyped so she keeps herself  to herself she does her own thing focuses on her   own life until one day and this is the bit that  puts me off until one day she meets a guy and then   well do i really need to say the rest she meets a  guy and i'm not a particularly big romance reader   anyway so but then this is supposed to be quite  a short read so maybe i will read it who knows   let's see what happens and the last one on my  list is a place for us by fatima farheen mirza   this one's about an indian american family who are  coming together for one of the siblings weddings   and basically well it's a wedding so there's bound  to be loads of drama and i'm gonna grab my popcorn   hopefully when i'm not fasting and i am here  for it i'll put all the links to the readathon   in the description of course you don't have to be  a muslim to participate in fact if you do please   let me know i hope you enjoyed this video thank  you for watching and i'll see you in my next video these misconceptions Morning!
