Finally saw one of the Stone Coil βbundlesβ in stores. It was a $18 bundle with what appeared to be ONE modern horizon 2 pack in it
Not to get all Andy Rooney on everyone, but yes, the repacks use to have Commander decks in them circa 2013 - 2014. For $20 - $30.
Man I wish I could buy out of print boosters for half price. I don't think that'd ever really happen though 'cause the sealed pack itself is often worth more than the cards inside, partially because it's not made any more. Each pack opened is one less in the world, and while there's plenty to start, over time it'll become more and more difficult to find unopened ones to either collect or use for drafting. Plus there's always those 20 dollar mythics that might be in it, and while it's probably not in it, the possibility of a payday drives up the price.
I'm definitely in favour of cardboard not costing so much, but I'm not hopeful.
Wow wow wow, so much respect for the honesty with the sponsorship.
Wait... are these repackaged by 3rd party? How is WOTC fine with that?
Like I commented on the video, these are only worth it if you directly see what is in them and the value is equal or higher than the cost.
Around the Rav Allegiance, War of the Spark release they used to have 4-pack ones for $20. They usually seemed to have at least one pack that was either a masters pack or something older like Torment or Onslaught. They likely wised up a little while ago, and you'd be lucky to find a collector's booster by itself once in a blue moon.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't encourage buying these "value packs." The odds of coming out ahead are so slim that you might as well be buying lottery tickets...
That said, I feel that if a Commander deck was pulled from one of the packs, it should have been noted - intentionally omitting the information comes off as deceptive to me, even though I'm aware of the reasoning.
Still, I wouldn't recommend buying them. That's still good advice.
Confession time: I've bought a few of these in the last couple of months, but I only do so on a couple of conditions. Firstly: I can tell what packs are inside, and secondly, at least two of those packs are from a set at least a year old.
Sometimes, with the power cubes, they pack them improperly so that you can see the packs inside; I got a [[Smothering Tithe]] from one of these, and a [[Goldspan Dragon]] from another.
With the blister packs that have a promo in the front, it's a lot easier to determine what the pack is by looking in the side; that's how I got an MH2 Collector Booster, a Kaldheim booster, and a Throne of Eldraine booster for $12.
These are very much outliers, but if I have some cash burning a hole in my pocket and I can tell what's in one of these repacks, I'll sometimes pick one up.
It's unfortunate that this is the way it is. Used to be that these kind of things at least occasionally had worthwhile stuff in them, but not anymore. I remember some of these (plastic cubes with multiple sets of cards) which had stuff like duel decks, planechase decks, or sometimes even commander decks in them.
