NFL 2022-2023 Season - Week 18: Rams @ Seahawks

and we welcome you to Seattle Washington where week 18 has major Stakes for the home team the Seattle Seahawks know what's on the line they clinch the playoffs with a win and then they become the biggest lions fans around who'd like to spoil it none other than former Seahawk Bobby Wagner in his return to Seattle but for Geno Smith he wants to cap his season as a Seattle starter with a playoff bid hi again everybody alongside my partner Mark Sanchez I'm Kevin coogler this is very simple for Seattle they win and then they hope they hope that the Lions beat the Packers tonight Mark what do they have to do to get it done well most importantly Gino Smith has to keep doing what he's done all year 29 touchdowns only nine interceptions he's taking care of the football well leads the league in completion percentage hey in the Bobby Wagner bull you got to be your best he can't let him come up here and play spoiler he's got to be sharp and Kenneth Walker has to help him out of the backfield they're stud running back for the defending Super Bowl champs we all know it's been a disappointing season but for quarterback Baker Mayfield who came in late in the year it's one more chance to make a positive impression that's exactly right and people aren't going to Care this off season that it's a little wet that the conditions aren't great that this is an energized Seattle Seahawks football team they're just going to watch the tape and it's a cold-blooded business if he can perform today that's just more good tape in his favor to go get a job somewhere next year he's going to have to be aware of those fans though the 12's shown up they're going to be loud and make it tough on them should be a lot of fun today with high stakes involved but we will not kick it off without saying hello to our friend of the field door opener all right Kevin the last time Bobby Wagner was obvious ly 171 days ago leaving the game after the first play with the knee injury Bobby's motivation today not having that play be his last play on this field no matter what Jersey he's wearing saying I was injured I was released and having to prove to the world you are who you are all those feelings he said are so much more important than revenge or ending Seattle season but that he added is the cherry on top Kevin yeah when we saw these two teams when both Sean McVeigh and Pete Carroll met up earlier in the season in Los Angeles Bobby Wagner tried to downplay playing his old team at that point too and then he came out played like a man with his hair on fire running all over the place see if he comes out that way again today it is a rainy day in Seattle that's not a surprise to the folks who live in Seattle 46 degrees light winds La won the toss they elect to defer so Seattle starts with a football and week 18 is underway in Seattle and the Touchback will bring it out to the 25-yard line where Geno Smith the Pro Bowl quarterback will make his way out completion percentage that leads the National Football League 29 touchdowns nine interceptions he's had firm control of this offense from the start of training camp Mark as he's been the starter and taken every single snap he absolutely has and he told us that was one of his preseason goals to take every snap once he was named the starter he's about to do it and let's see what happens they're fighting for their playoff lives it's wet it's sloppy it's slick we're only missing a slip and slide out here he's got to be sharp with that football on first down off the play fifth good protection and it's intercepted by Ricky Jalen Ramsey with a pick down the sideline and out of bounds DK Metcalf was the intended receiver and Gino Smith threw it right to the All-Pro well he just undercut it undercuts this little magra basically like a sting route you show hard play action up front low pad level by the offensive lineman try and sell run give them the illusion of run and Jalen Ramsey undercuts it makes a Savvy veteran play you see the opening there they got the opening at the second level with the linebackers they parted right there for Metcalf to run into it you'd love to see him come back downhill a little bit more friendly to the quarterback but overall just a great play by Jalen Ramsey and now first down and 10 for the Rams at the Seattle 11-yard line play action for Baker Mayfield pass deflected and incomplete Abram all over that chenaosu with the tip in its second down and even if he completed this ball watch after it gets tipped here look at Abram the former Raider signs here to help out in that run game because they lost Ryan Neal their safety number 26 he's got some serious slack to pick up he would have blown it up too at well in motion on second down this is acres and cam Acres who has been an absolute Revelation for the Rams late picks up four up the middle and here's Baker Mayfield came over this is his third team this season Cleveland Carolina Rams began the calendar year with the Browns then traded to Carolina and now a ram and you see that record there one or two I know he didn't technically start the game against the Raiders right obviously Wolford played the first three plays the first series and then Baker comes in but really this is about getting him to essentially a winning record for Rams quarterback this year and I know that sentence doesn't make sense based on the way they played third down and six quick toss Acres with the grab good tackle by Cody Barton his first career 100 tackle year stops him short of the first down just an excellent Tackle by Cody Barton you're going to see him fly to here as soon as he sees it he knows he has the half back and he had to go get an early step almost jumped the snap count to run away usually you're jumping the snap count to go get the quarterback to go make a tackle to time it up but he's jumping the snap count just to get away thank you 22-yard try from Matt gay Le Dixon to hold and the Rams on the board first that's a huge stop by the Seahawks no question Jalen Ramsey on the very first play gets the interception but the Rams are held to three join us in a moment of support and love for Demar and cheer for him and his family as they continue their fights foreign galvanized this week with one goal in mind watching Demar Hamlin bounce back from that horrific scene on Monday night and it's been so encouraging and awesome to see the recovery happening from afar we were all captivated by that on Monday night in horror but now today across the league we joined in celebration of what appears to be a miraculous recovery and we're so excited for him for his family and for everybody who follows the National Football League and really it was you know people say well you know Sports brings people together that was the ultimate example of a mark it brought everybody together behind one goal that young man it really wasn't I've never seen anything like it in my career being around this league for a while that was uh it was an intense moment I thought the coaches handled it well and uh so great and inspiring to hear that he's coming back and coming back strong so for Gino Smith the 16th game with at least one giveaway this season the very first play of the game an interception by Jalen Ramsey his third of the year but that Seattle defense really provided a shot in the arm for the team because they get the stop from the 11-yard line holding the Rams to just three points that was huge they got to be sharp here and also get Geno's confidence back a little bit you know Kate Johnson In Motion from the 25 it'll be Kenneth Walker who will get the carry first and Walker picks up five to the 30-yard line before Marquis Copeland can make the stop offensively for Seattle it's an offensive line with rookie bookend tackles Charles cross and Abraham Lucas back out there this week after missing last week with a tendon injury in the backfield we saw Kenneth Walker III second among all rookie running backs to Damian Pierce in yardage tops in rookie rushing touchdowns this year he's been tremendous extra linemen on the field for Seattle on second down it's Walker again a hole up the middle he's got a first down and more and Kenneth Walker to the 39-yard line picks up nine and a Seattle first down that was a good looking power play as they pull Tammy and Lewis from left to right into the left guard inside and lead the way here goes big 68 picking off Defenders along the way exactly what you want get Kenneth Walker Roland you got to steal Gino a quick completion here in these first 15 plays remember they're still in their opening script having that interception in the first play of the game but you see there are multiple personnels they went big now they're with two tight ends 12 Personnel there's Smith there's that easy completion you talked about Mark this to Noah fans and Out of Bounds at the 42-yard line let's take a look at the defense for the Los Angeles Rams the defense that it was without Aaron Donald that which is obviously a huge loss along that defensive line Laurel Murchison starting in his spot today Bobby Wagner the former Seahawk we've chronicled his story his 11th straight 100 tackle year coming back and Raheem Morris's defense to the town he called home for a decade and still calls it home he's still got a place up here and off to Walker again and Walker up the gut right into the arms of Ernest Brown the fourth and it'll bring up third down for Seattle but after that interception Raheem Morris has had to deal with the Run game of Kenneth Walker III sure have now they get to this third down let's see if what the story is what the plan is for Geno Smith I'd expect a little bit of pressure try and get him off his game a little bit move him around trying to get some Free Runners on them down and six Smith to the sideline for Lockett and Tyler lockett's First Catch gets a Seattle first down well it's just so much access for me here on this speed out watch him I think that's just a little soft there on this third down it looked like Trent was coming open underneath as well and once again I mean Bobby Wagner an absolute monster but if they get him one-on-one with the half back again be ready for that see if Shane Waldron switches this up and if Bobby's gonna play him man-to-man I'd I'd Sprint out that uh running back I'd get Kenneth Walker outside and line him up as a receiver and make Bobby cover there's Walker zigzags his way into the arms of Bobby Wagner an eight-yard pickup on the play for Walker just a little play out of the pistol you see the running back right behind Geno Smith getting two linemen out in front you see the game plan for them are these Gap trap type runs you saw the power with one puller that's more of a counter type play with two pullers in front of them that's the story and here goes DJ Dallas in the backfield look at this Wildcat we saw this a little bit in practice on Friday Dallas will fake the give he'll keep us outside the 15. Gabe Jackson The Right Guard leading the way and DJ Dallas rumbles his way down inside the foot watch the yard line for 29. he's gonna hit to the right quickly just to wait for his guys and then zigzag back underneath quick fake time it up let Noah get involved he collects rap in the secondary and springs him to the third level almost immediately doesn't even get touched till the very end of the Run huge play and why not if it ain't broke don't fix it to Wildcat well motion and you know move yep false start oh offense number seven it's a five round penalty first down getting in that receiver I'm not apologizing for him he can't move out there okay I've had my own share of troubles out there as a wide receiver trying to block for Brad Smith way back with the Jets but you see him he's just trying to stay off balance I've done that so many times in practice and you get so nervous going out there on an island because you know the best thing to do is honestly just stand straight don't try and get in a receiver stance don't try and fake it just be who you are get out there stand there and just eliminate yourself from the play nobody can miss you when you're out there a little bit so first at 15 and Walker picking his way forward for a yard or two not much there with Jonah Williams in the way and it'll bring up second down now for Seattle Red Zone touchdowns have been a problem 51 percent touchdown percentage 26th in the NFL they're one of the best Red Zone scoring teams in the National Football League but they settle for field goals time and time again and that's part of it you get a first year starter and Geno Smith putting these young rookie pieces together this thing's going to grow over time and gosh if they can get a win here today draft the right way with all the extra picks they got this team could be something serious in the future nobody opens Smith on the Run gonna have to use his legs and again this Turf is wet it has rained for most of the day now it doesn't appear to be doing too much in the rain Department right now but it was pouring pregame and the footing is going to be interesting on this surface in Seattle it really was slick conditions and you see it right there on the scramble looks decent right now Laura set up a deal where it would stop raining by the time take care of our girl down there tenth play this one these are the situations getting into third and long like this after the penalty that's why they're settling for field goals and not capitalizing and getting touchdowns down here Smith looking for a touchdown and it's knocked away from DK Metcalf by Troy Hill outstanding play by Hill to deny Metcalf foreign s he had to recover because Metcalf had him beat on this double post type look you see Noah fan occupying rap for just a second and that ball there's an old school West Coast play double post let the inside guy run to the free safety that's Taylor rap go shake hands with him and get him out of the play and then open it up for your outside big guy generally a big receiver running it just a tad late by Gino and an excellent play uh Defender Jason Myers from 37 to tie this one up and Myers just sneaks it in along the right upright the teams exchanging field goals early 3-3 Seattle and L.A [Music] 11 play 56-yard drive for Seattle they settle for a field goal after taking 6-19 off the clock knotted up at three a piece in a game Seattle must win to have a shot at making the playoffs they need to win then they need the Lions to beat the Packers tonight to go to the postseason let's get a game break our first of the day in Seattle with Carissa in Los Angeles thank you so much Kevin so Niners trailing six nothing Brock Purdy dumps it up to who else Christian McCaffrey who does the rest McCaffrey's 10th touchdown in 11 games with the Niners Niners up 7-6 yep hi Carissa Christian McCaffrey seemingly a solid pickup for the San Francisco 49ers this year I don't want to be that bold Mark so I'll let you be bold well the Rams were in on the McCaffrey sweepstakes and it just didn't work out but I'll tell you what it worked out is Kobe Bryant in the backfield his second sack of the season watch him show like he's gonna cover in the slot there takes off at the snap that one the halfback's got to go back for that and make it right you see cam anchors leaking out of the backfield and then Powell too saying hey my bad I got to get a piece of that guy to slow him down and give Baker Mayfield the chance second and 13 at the 22. Baker will keep fakes the option pitch and Baker Mayfield oh took a big hit and down at the 32-yard line action Clips soon boom get some of that right in the air hole here's played by Baker just to set up the third and short it's doing signaling third down and three Mayfield with pressure ladies in trouble and he's set the second time on the drive Bruce Urban's third sack of the Year [Applause] what's preserving [Music] [Applause] there he goes on the game then the tackle go first he goes and runs into Shelton catches the crease there and makes the most of it but credit to Seattle that defense I mean they locked up everything nobody had a chance on those routes fourth and 12 Dixon Dupont DJ Dallas from the 31. Dallas across the 40. Dallas across Midfield into Rams territory timeout in Seattle the Seattle defense with two sacks on the drive getting it back in good shape for the offense as Mark Sanchez called it earlier the Bobby Wagner Bowl underway in Seattle and in the pregame a lot of love for the long time member of the Seattle Seahawks players with plenty of hugs even the head coach with a big hug and Laura a lot of emotion down there for Bobby Wagner to deal with today it's a funny thing when you bring up emotions though to Bobby Wagner he said he's a master of emotions I thought that meant holding them in and he said actually the opposite it means embracing and expressing how you feel because the more you express the more you embrace the more you experience he said I I don't run away from emotions you know who also isn't Ernest Jones that's a linebacker that Bobby has taken under his wing or what Ernest would say was I am attached to his hip I asked Earnest what would this game this win mean to you and he said we are considering this the Super Bowl the Super Bowl for Bobby Wagner wow says a lot for the kind of person Bobby Wagner is in the locker room is Walker pop through to pick up yardage to the 45 Ernest Jones the aforementioned linebacker on a able to pull him down but I mean you can you talk about him with Pete Carroll he said the thing that stood out most his remarkable consistency they said he's a Hall of Famer oh no doubt and one of the best backers to do it in recent memory for me and haven't played against a guy just an absolute monster in the middle there and you see you know he knows he's in his last few years of playing and he's bringing these young guys along that's such a mature thing to do but here comes again watch this pressure off the edge comes up pressure Kobe Durant providing the late heat she don't need to take it that way and Gino Smith chugging for the first down chased out by Leonard Floyd that's where somebody has to keep contained on the opposite side see Leonard Floyd goes watch Leonard Floyd here he moves with Parkinson down the middle and that's where he loses contain right there he's got to get help inside from Bobby Brown 95. we cover 20. so it could have been worse for Gino is what you're saying yeah no doubt just a simple penalty as long as we got the slo-mo replay on the second one oh Walker there's a field and a little oh do essentially what you want to do like just get in the way of the big bowl and then kind of move out of the way like a matador I loved it right there just slow him down knock him off track that's the cross start offense number 67 it's a five yard penalty still third down first round left tackle Charles cross see him on the left side here just a little Flinch no got it but once again another penalty first Gino early in the game then Charles cross that's why again another third and 11 plus I mean these are these are tough situations it's over the middle as a man open it's caught by his tight end but short of the first down is Noah Fant Taylor wrapped with the ankle tackle after the eight yard gain and that'll bring on Jason Myers to try to give Seattle the late first quarter lead well that's been the story these penalties getting them into third and long they got to be more efficient on first and second down avoid the self-inflicted wounds and offensive penalties that are back is what's going on today in the hunt the Lions and Packers they play tonight but for Seattle and for Pete Carroll the only thing they were going to talk about with us when we met with them in their facilities on Friday was this game only thing we can control they'd say is this game and they know if they win then they have to become big fans of the Detroit Lions and hope that the Lions can knock off the Packers tonight I just thought that was interesting as we kind of pulled the players we just assumed you know hey these guys are going to be watching the game they'll probably have a watch party whatever most of the guys are like yeah I'm gonna be watching Netflix I can't watch I'm gonna be playing Call of Duty you know I did I do think coach Carroll will be watching them kind of hinted it at that so this is tonight Lions are three and 27 in their last 30 games at Lambeau Field and Aaron Rodgers 18-1 in December and January under Matt leflore however in game one between those two teams this year Lions won 15-9 they picked off Aaron Rodgers three times both teams are better or at least playing better than they were in that meeting earlier in the season that was coming back from dead I mean that was incredible everybody had written them off from the 25-yard line on first down well in motion Acres trying to find room to run slipped a little bit on his cut and then ran into the arms of Shelby Harris no gain on the play and that will take us to the end of quarter number one it's been a field goal Fest so far in this one a couple of sacks for the Seahawks a pick for the Rams and a 6-3 ball game after one negative 10 pass yards in that first quarter for the Rams with those two sacks from Seattle Seattle got it going on the ground 79 yards rushing in the first quarter no first downs yet for the Rams they Trail 6-3 they're three points coming after a Ramsey interception on the very first play of the game that turned into three points Seattle's done a great job but mixing up Personnel going big getting into phone booth and slugging it out with that run game let's see if the Rams can get some runs under their belt second and ten and the toss to Tyler Higby and Higby tumbling forward close to the first down it'll be a yard short Kobe Bryant on the tackle [Applause] the Mayfield getting a little Pace going with this offense on Third and one well in motion Acres the carrier move to the edge in acres down the sideline cam Acres lowers the shoulder into quandary digs and a first down for the Rams at the 34. of the Seattle Seahawks watch the block by Powell he's the one who's who Springs this thing he Nails Jonathan Abram there goes Mike Jackson looking at the fly sweep motion and they were Off to the Races stepped out of bounds before he delivered the blow at the end there but what about the Resurgence of Cam Acres talk about a Lazarus Story I mean it sounded like he was on the chop and block the training block he was out of there didn't sound like he was going to take another snap as a ram earlier in the season and here he is coming back having a couple great games to close out the season looking like the guy they drafted him to be acres to the 30-yard line that was the interesting part for cam Acres this week no Graham's running backs had back to back 100 yard game since CJ Anderson in 2018 until Akers is done at the last two games and we were talking with Sean McCain he said it's a real credit to him Thomas Brown's done a really good job with him he maximized his opportunities became a huge bright spot they've indicated that they're now not looking to move him in the off season so all of a sudden the guy who thought for sure he was gone wasn't even around the facility maybe an integral part of what they do next year interesting how it changes and how quickly you can get back into the fold second and six it's Acres again and Acres fights his way up the middle for a couple and Laura it was a pretty remarkable turnaround for cam Acres remember we had that game when Camp was sent home and reports said it was it Sean said that was a great illustration Sean we face out of why You Never Say Never and the importance of both sides saying I don't know how we got there but we're better than this they sat down and they acknowledged it can't hold him his responsibilities were and that they said what he could have done better he said cam is a great kid I'm so happy for him and for us with the job he's doing he's been a huge part of the Rams offense in the last month 33 Mayfield pressure comes Mayfield able to get away the first time but he cannot get away the second time for boyet mafe and the Seattle defense stands strong again in the field goal unit coming on for Los Angeles he's looking left first to Higby see that doesn't open up and I thought he would find the receiver right over the ball watch this he's looking left no and there goes van Jefferson slamming on the brakes it would have had to be a quick quick throw there's the out Abram all over that and just nothing there he wanted Hopkins tight end number 88. from 45 yards for Matt gay and the 100th made field goal in the career of Matt gay ties this game at six plenty of kicking early in Seattle [Music] Gino Smith beat all three of his former teams this season week seven beating the Chargers 37-23 took down the Giants the next week here in Seattle and finally Smith beat the New York Jets the team that drafted him on New Year's Day the first quarterback since Earl Moore in 1968 to beat at least three of his former teams in the same season second quarterback to make his first full goal in his 10th career here or later with Rich Gannon being the other 6-6 ball game Seattle and the Rams early second quarter here in Seattle [Music] [Applause] [Music] Smith the season in Seattle entering week 18 leads the NFL in completion percentage tied for fours in the NFL in touchdown passes selected to his first Pro Bowl and as mentioned beat all three of those former clubs yeah you would think so not so sleeveless in Seattle what is that invest It Wide Awake in Seattle probably staying at a Holiday Inn Express he must have it's down at 10 at the 25-yard line in movement again up front starts offense number 84 five-yard penalty first down come on go back to the beginning of the year when the trade occurred and a lot of folks thought it would be Drew lock who would be the starting quarterback on March 16th when Russell Wilson went to Denver but boy the quarterback comparison is really no comparison this year between Geno Smith and the guy he backed up a year ago nice run to the right side for Walker before he's tripped up at the 27-yard line by Ernest Jones I don't I don't know if anybody would have called that before the season right and it was interesting talking to coach Carroll that these last few years he's really shown some promise He's just never gotten the opportunity you know Russ Wilson just hadn't been hurt and uh there was no reason to get him in the game but he's shown it on Scout team and just steadily plugging away chipping away at it every single day coach Carol knew it foreign [Applause] and he's blasted by Ernest Jones really good play by the young linebacker from South Carolina he said he's learning from Bobby Wagner watch him diagnose here comes the motion and he stays steady and then fires right at the end right past Kenneth Walker Kenneth Walker has to get a better piece of him and protect the ball carrier right there to learn from that one and on that completion which was a negative completion Geno sets a new Seattle record passing Russell Wilson for completions I mean there's plenty of Records here to beat for Geno playing this whole season draw play to DJ Dallas and Dallas not going to be able to get anywhere close to the first down and Bobby wagon are going to Usher him all the way out of the stadium all over him [Applause] laughs probably just action Mayfield throws it short Powell tried to pull it in behind him and Tariq Woolen the rookie from UTSA knocked it free but Woolen was all over this just these slides trying to escape and out leverage the defense ball thrown behind them [Applause] that doesn't have a chance oh gonna move the little face mask there and the comparisons we hit between him and Richard Sherman have just been uncanny with all those interceptions switching from the wide receiver to defensive back just like Sherman Stanford another incredible Corner they've drafted here in Seattle igb picks up three and brings up third down Rams hustling up to the live at the 35. Seahawks changing out Defenders foreign fast guys Seattle barely gets the exchange in time you see all that communication between these two Barton and Abram having to talk everything out Abram's new to this system third and seven oh field almost intercepted there is a flag down tease Tabor nearly his first NFL interception I think they're going to get Jackson Jonathan Abram just talking about him a moment ago mark so here we go he just doesn't let him get outside and there's Abram come off the two I don't know I mean you gotta have a plan as a receiver you can just run into guys and expect a call now in at left tackle for the Rams off play action Mayfield checks it short this is Cam Acres acres in the Seattle territory and down near the 47th Tanner Muse on the tackle we check in downstairs with Laura it's January at Seattle let's talk about some rain you guys said earlier it was raining I would say pretty hard the three of us would but I was told by everyone in Seattle this it'll be Los Angeles football from the 25-yard line with the Touchback Laura open you had a chance to talk with both coaches what'd you find out I did well I talked to Sean 's touchdown drive and he's and he it was about that third version of a couple of big plays but he said really it was about the early down conversion and then it wants to make sure that early down efficiency keeps going right now I asked him it's the last half of this crazy 2022 season what was the message in the locker room and he said finish finish the right way and that's what they're hoping to do finish the right way as you feed him a little more more touches and then he just comes alive you see his legs churning on that last run he's finishing downhill see if they give him another shot at first and goal from the mishap for the Rams they've taken full advantage and Gino's been sharp on this drive see if they get him on the move on this play and then potentially slamming up in there on the fourth down if they there's a lot to work through this but again that's a tough one on Ramsay because Gino's going straight up the field and Geno Smith was still down but now back up again you can hear the crowd chanting Gino Gino Gino on the long run of the season for Gino 25 yards here's the other thing Gino Gino looked fast yeah I mean he took off and outran a couple Defenders to gain all that gain all those yards on the edge Drew lock almost coming in coming in for him [Applause] that whole series of events no timeouts and they two seconds to play I think if you're Ramsay the player right there is to try and Sean mcvay's team has battled his defense has been outstanding today they have continued to fight but Pete Carroll's Seattle Seahawks are in great position to win this game with any score and then they wait let's see if they try and Center it meaning Gino just kind of moved to his left or they hand it off and exchange it to Walker give him a chance to put it exactly where Myers wants to kick from cosplay Walker Walker will try to turn up field and down at the 14-yard line two-yard gain third down and here comes Myers they're not gonna wait he missed from 46 at the end of regulation he'll his level best to help eliminate his previous team the Lions a win by Seattle eliminates Detroit but then Seattle needs Detroit to go out and beat Green Bay so they can go to the playoffs as Laura
