New Wine - Part 1

[Music] [Music] grab your Bible everybody turn over to the Book of Luke in the New Testament welcome to a brand new series that we are starting this weekend called new wine based on this amazing little story that Jesus told a parable in Luke chapter 5 we're gonna read it all together I'm reading from my brand new amplified bible smells good how many vino you got to give it the smell test genuine leatherr Luke chapter 5 and verse 36 he also told them a parable now the first part is about clothing and then we're gonna get to the parable about the new wine he says no one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old one otherwise he will both tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old and no one everybody say no one some translations say no man in other words this is a universal principle this is universal thought no one no one would even think to put new wine into old wineskins otherwise the new fermenting wine will expand and burst the skins and it will be spilled out and the skins will be ruined but new wine must be put into I want you to notice this word right here fresh wine skins everybody see it new wine must be put into fresh wine skins and no one verse 39 is a very interesting verse Luke of all of the Gospels where this story is mentioned Luke is the only one that adds this verse but it's an important one no one after drinking old wine wishes for new for he says the oldest fine the oldest fine now this little parable that Jesus is teaching is a part of his style this is Jesus style he taught in stories he used he used real life stories analogies to illustrate truth the word parable we get the word parallel from so Jesus gives a parallel truth from real life and he's teaching about he's teaching about wine and wine skins and this was common for Jesus because in Jerusalem in the day that Jesus walked the earth there were vineyards all around and wine was a part of the culture so he talked about wine presses and he talked about vineyards and he talked about new wine and he talked about wine skins and here is this little little parable that is packed with so much truth and there are two main principles that I want you to write down that this little story illustrates two of these parallel truths that we need to embrace and really the essence of the series boils down to these two thoughts number one God wants to do something new in your life God wants to do something new in your life Jesus was teaching the people that were around him he was speaking to them he was telling them that God wants to do something new in your life he's telling us today through the Living Word of God that he wants to do something new in our life second principle the new that God wants to do is going to require some change from you and change is not easy change is not easy we would come to realize as we study the life of Jesus that these people that Jesus spoke to many many many of them could not make the change and as a result Jesus was crucified on a cross he thankfully was raised from the dead three days later and paid the ultimate price with his life so you and I could have freedom all that happened because that particular group of leaders religious people could not make the change they could not transition from the old system from the old wineskin to the ooh wineskin they couldn't cross the bridge of faith and change they were so hung up in the old they could not make the change it's a lesson for all of us so this is what we're going to unpack throughout this series for the next several weeks so this little story has a few main characters the new wine the wine skins and then the the character that is not seen behind the scenes the master winemaker who makes the wine who also makes the wine skins and puts it all together so let's think about these these three characters everybody first of all we have the new wine everybody say new wine new wine all over the Bible this expression new wine here's here's what new wine represents I want you to write this down if you're taking notes jot this down if you're not taking notes write this down here we go new wine here's what it means blessing growth change progress new opportunities new seasons new relationships new assignments I can't write fast enough new levels new levels let me read it again new wine represents blessing growth change progress new opportunities new seasons new relationships new assignments new levels should I read it one more time okay let's do it blessing growth change progress new opportunities new seasons new relationships new assignments new levels come on how many of us want the new wine in our life we want God's blessing we want progress we want growth we want new seasons and new opportunities how about new relationships we want all those things it's the new wine it's the new wine and again all throughout the Bible as a matter of fact in the Old Testament the patriarchs of old when they laid hands on somebody and they spoke a blessing they spoke a blessing of new wine Genesis 27 verse 28 may God give you heavens dews and heavens do rather and Earth's richness and abundance of grain and new wine they spoke that as they laid hands on people may you be blessed with new wine growth progress blessing opportunity new seasons change when the people were about to go into the Promised Land the new land how many of you know they were delivered from Egypt they were slaves in Egypt they didn't have an identity they were completely delivered they were brought out of Egypt to go into the new land and Moses prophesied he said he will I love this I love this verse this is this was God's will he will love you and bless you and increase your numbers somebody say increase he will bless the fruit of your womb and also in the in the book of Proverbs the Bible says that God will bless us when we tithe new wine will flow into our life when we put God first honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your income everybody see it all your income then your barns will be abundantly filled and your vats will overflow with progress and change and momentum and blessing and new seasons and new opportunities and new relationships come on somebody new wine do you get the picture that God wants to do something new in your life that God wants to bring the new in your life and that's why the Lord says this forget the former things don't dwell on the past see I am doing a new thing come on can we thank God for the new thing that God is doing and wants to do in our life come on can we thank God for it everybody new wine well what about the second character the new wine represents the things that God wants to do the new thing that God wants to do the second character it's the wineskins and that's you and me we're the ones that have to be able to hold and carry and possess the knew that God wants to do so in this little parable Jesus talks about the wine skin and its ability to carry the new wine skin was in Jesus day made of goat skin and again that master winemaker would prepare the wine skins take the skins of the goat sew them together like a bag sort of a vessel and flip flip it inside out and coat it with some sort of coating that would seal make it able to hold flip it back you know the other way and let it dry and then and then take the the wine that had just been pressed the new wine and pour it into that vessel and let it hang somewhere let it sit somewhere and the wine the new wine as we just read would ferment and would bring an expansion and so so the skin the skin was soft and and and and flexible and pliable and it would it would stretch and stretch and stretch as the wine fermented to the point where when it was completed when the when the wine was finished fermenting that skin had been stretched all the way and then they would let the wine age and as it did the skin would become hard become brittle it would become inflexible it would it would have been stretched to its almost its breaking point and when that wine that had aged was all used up and was completely poured out that skin that wine skin would then be a used wine skin a skin that had maybe completed its assignment we could say but the good news is the good news is that wineskin would not be tossed out would not be discarded the wineskin could actually go through a process of being made new again that's why Jesus used the word fresh new wine into a fresh wine skin the point that Jesus is making in this parable is the end of a season doesn't mean the end of an era the end of a powerful moment in your life doesn't mean the end of your life if you want the new thing or the next thing that God wants to do in your life you have to be willing to commit to a process of being made new again you've got to be willing to commit to a process of renewal and so often we're looking for the new thing on the outside and we're waiting for it to come from without but really the new comes from within because if you will commit to a process of being made new over and over again God will continue to bring the new into your life over and over again the problem is the problem is we sort of like the old it's why jesus closed with that verse no one who who drinks the old will say they want the new because we get set in our ways and we get used to certain things and so so maybe we're more resistant to change and that keeps us from stepping into something new because watch this the master the third character the Lord Himself in this parable so the new wine represents all the new that God wants to do the wine skins represent you but then there's the master the Lord who is responsible for the new wine and the wine skins and the Lord would never the Lord would never take something new and bring it into your life if you're not ready for it because all its gonna do is break you all its gonna do is keep you from really being able to be all that he wants you to be and the analogy here is the wine skin will crack and the new wine will be spilled out and both will be ruined and so we pray Lord bring in the new and the Lord says to us renew yourself so you're ready for the new Lord bring the new and the Lord says be renewed Lord bring the new be renewed be renewed commit to a process of continual renewal and it's not easy but it's the key to moving forward and stepping into everything that God has for us so that's why I say it this way and if you're taking notes you can write it down the new that God wants to do always starts in you the new that God wants to do always starts in you always it always starts in you it always starts on the inside so I want you to think about this this process that a a wineskin that had been used poured out everything that it had to to think about the process that that wine skin would go through to be made new again three steps that wonderful beautiful big-hearted wine master winemaker would take that skin that was hard and brittle inflexible the first thing that he would do is he would soak it in water take those skins and soak them in water sometimes for a long time however long it took after a season of soaking in the water that master would pull the skin out let it drip dry then he would coat it with oil coat it with oil after it was completely coated with oil the third step is the master himself would put his hands on that wine skin and rub that oil in so I want you to think about these three steps you believe in God for the new I'm believing God for the new I believe there's a new season for you I believe there's some new opportunities for you I totally believe it I'm in faith for it I'm believing it for me but I know that I'm gonna have to walk out the process with the Lord of stepping into the new so think about what these three represents if you want the new wine here's where we go number one number one soaked in water represents a new way of thinking a new way of thinking as a man thinks the Bible says so is he and I'm a firm believer but if we want to step into the new we've got to renew our minds and we've got to think differently about the same things that we've always that we've always seen or dealt with the same challenges right you know the definition of insanity is to do the same thing you've always done you always get what you've always had right or so the idea is let let yourself be soaked in God's Word soaked in an environment where you can be challenged and you're thinking so you can grow in your thoughts so you can think new thoughts so you can dream new dreams but it begins with your thinking the Bible talks about in Romans chapter 12 that our lives are renewed right transformed changed when our mind is changed I love what it says in Ephesians look look over the features chapter 4 with me I love this passage right here come on somebody say a new way of thinking that's that first step soaked in water sometimes we've got to soak a long time because we're stubborn it just we've just refused to change the way we think about something and so we're soaking it we're praying the Lord bring bring in the new and the Lord soaking us down in that water trying to help us change the way we think Ephesians chapter 4 listen to it and be continually renewed in the spirit of your mind having a fresh untarnished mental and spiritual attitude wow that's good how about if we read it all together can you put it on the screens at every location let's check it out let's read it together I loved how many of you know I'd love to read out loud I think something powerful about it let's read it all together and be continually let me hear you in the spirit of your mind having a fresh a fresh perspective a new way of thinking you know one of the things that has happened in the United States around the world is this in church is this concept of multi-sites one church can be in different locations I'm speaking live to Highland to our Highland campus and to our German town Park West Parkway campus and even to people watching online it's an interesting phenomena and one of my closest friends is the one that really would be one of the very early pioneers in starting the multi-site movement and it's because his church listen to me this is a this is a an interesting story his church was growing Seacoast Church in Charleston South Carolina one of the early early early innovators of this idea now there's hundreds thousands of churches that have this process and this program but early way back in the day they had grown so much they had no space and they had multiple services I think six or eight services in one location and they had this property and they wanted to they wanted to expand on this property and build a large beautiful facility and they even had architectural drawings done and and they went to their City Council and the City Council said no you can't build that on that property they went back again another year later and the City Council said no and it got to the point where where the the City Council members a few of them said this will happen over my dead body like that's how angry they were and how resistant they were and my friend Greg Surratt said it was one of the lowest days of his life and they thought what can we do and there was some there was some retail space right across the street from their church and they said well let's get that retail space and let's just let's build an auditorium as an overflow room and we'll just we'll just put a video on over there of the service and just what else can we do and and that first Sunday they did that if the place was completely packed now they have like 17 locations all over Charleston and what what was one of his darkest moments turned into a new innovation that really has changed the the outlook and has changed the program and changed the nature of the church in the United States and around the world it works it's powerful churches grow this way and can reach have a greater reach this way but it started with something negative it started with something difficult it started with a trial it started with an angry City Council person saying over my dead body by the way by the way can I tell you you should never say that because about 10 years later two council members died and they revote it and now they're building a brand new beautiful facility on that property the timing was off but you never want to resist what the Lord is doing let me just say let me just say but some of you are in a dark place there's a situation going on in your family or at work or there's some kind of trial and some kind of challenge and you just are discouraged over it but can I tell you that's the breeding ground for a miracle that's the breeding ground for God to do something new but you've got to think different you've got to be renewed in your thinking you got to look at it from a different perspective we pray prayers like this Lord grow me Lord use me Lord do something new and then here's what the Lord does he takes away something no that's not what I meant Lord but how can the Lord bring something new into your life if you don't set aside something old our hands are greedy little are greedy little fingers are holding on so tightly that Lord Kant the Lord can't do something new in our life because he wants to bring something new but we're holding on so tight why don't you loosen up a little bit open your hand he may he may be able to take something yes that's the risk but he might be able to put something brand-new something bigger and better and more effective come on come on somebody see the words shaking everybody say shaking the words shaking is all over the Bible God is a God who shakes he shakes things up he just does you know why because we get comfortable and we get used to a certain way and we get used to certain things and the status quo becomes that's the acceptable norm and God wants to lift you to another place and God wants to do something greater in your life so he shakes the tree and what happens when he shakes the tree all the dead fruit falls to the ground and it makes room for new fruit new growth new wine progress change new seasons new opportunities come on church come on so that the skin was drip dried after soaking in in the water and then the oil poured out all over the the skin well we've been talking about the oil haven't we the Holy Spirit and so not only do you need a new way of thinking here's number two you need a new anointing you need a new anointing for every new season new levels how many of you know you've probably heard this old saying new levels new Devils have you heard that before so we get excited about going to another level but we meet new opposition at the next level so the anointing you had that took you through the last season you need a new anointing for the new season that's why in the book of Acts you got still with me everybody's still checking with that's why in the book of Acts we saw them they were they were filled with the Holy Spirit again and then a few chapters later they were filled with the Holy Spirit again and then they were filled with the Holy Spirit again why because there was growth and there was expansion and there were new challenges and there were new strategies and there were new things that they needed to do and so they couldn't live and this was all throughout the Bible by the way when they wandered in the wilderness God provided manna for them every day and they couldn't store it up every day they had to start over and they had to get the manner they needed for that day in the New Testament Jesus said pray this way give us today our daily bread you need an anointing for today can I tell you you need an when tomorrow comes your gonna need an anointing for tomorrow and when you have that baby you're gonna need an anointing for that baby and then when you have a second baby you're gonna need another anointing for that baby when you start that new job you're gonna need a new anointing for that job and when 2019 comes we're gonna need another anointing for 2019 come on can I get an amen from somebody and it's too often it's too often we're living we're trying to live on yesterday's manna and it's spoiled and it's rotten and it's never meant to carry us forward you need the new anointing you need a new experience with the Holy Spirit you can't depend on 1988 hello that was 20 years ago sorry 30 years ago [Laughter] come on trying to stir you up a little bit let's wake up to a new let's wake up to a new let's wake up to a new anointing a new anointing the church needs a new anointing because there's a new wave of culture and there's new challenges we're facing and our city's gonna face new challenges and our country is gonna face new challenges and we need to be anointed for the new instead of being stuck in the old unable to progress and unable to move forward because we love the old come on we got to love the new more than we love the old we got to be more loyal to the future than we are to the past we need a new anointing Isaiah chapter 10 verse 27 the yoke or the difficulty or the obstacle or the challenge will be destroyed because of the anointing and I'm here to say and it might sound negative but there's some new challenges and there's some new yokes there there's some new obstacles there's some new mountains and and that mountain isn't gonna move with yesterday's faith it's not gonna happen you do be made new in the attitude of your mind and your thinking and number two in your anointing and can I tell you the third step was wasn't just enough to be soaked in water and wasn't just enough to be anointed with oil but that master had to get his hands on that that wineskin Rob that oil down into that dry inflexible brittle wine skin the wonderful touch of the master mmm massaging that wine skin getting that of oil all down into all parts of that wine skin that's the hand of God you know what that represents a new relationship with God a new relationship with God a new relationship with God and we need it we need it there's a reason why you feel empty there's a reason why you feel bored there's a reason why you just feel indifferent it's a reason why maybe you feel like you're at the end of a season and you wonder is there anything is there anything more that God has for me all that is meant to create in you a hunger to press into God like you've never pressed into God before there's a reason there's a challenge in your life there's a reason why your business is plateaued there's a reason why there's a reason why one of your children are struggling now I'm not saying the Lord brought it but there's a reason because it's created in you a desire to seek God like you've never sought God before because it's created in you a hunger to find out what is God doing in my life what does God want to do what's next and no Peter I love Peter in the Bible Peter the disciple he was always how many of you know who's always the one that said what everybody else was thinking he's the only one that had the boldness to say it so they were fishing fished all night Jesus said I got something more for you in Peters like we're done we have gone all night and Jesus said launch out into the deep and you know what I want to encourage some of you today with your relationship with God launch out into the deep the shallow wind is fine it's fine it's you can get refreshed and you can have fun it's fine if that's where you want to stay God will love you and everything's great but there's more there's more there's more for you there's more than just do in church there's more there's more than just religion there's there's something about a living breathing relationship with God where you you have to trust him every day with your life and it brings such a freshness in your soul because you don't have anything else people ask all the time and you lived in Africa you know you saw these miracles I mean we would see astounding miracles why because they don't have anything else they didn't have what you have that's all they had it God was their first resort and their last resort and everything in between and if God didn't do a miracle it was over and so we saw these amazing miracles and you know I think sometimes we pray for the new and then God tries to shake the tree and we run for safety instead of just being in the wonderful hands of the master and letting him get his hands on us let him get his hands on your marriage let him get his hands on your money watch what he can do watch what he can do see there's some of you are you're here today you don't have a relationship with God you don't maybe you go to church or maybe a friend invited you and you're kind of checking out that's your step take that step and surrender your life to Jesus today there's there's others of you that you know you you're a Christian but you know you really don't prioritize your time with God so maybe for you here's a step here's an encouraging step why don't you make a decision that every day you're gonna spend time with God whether you're a morning person or you're a knight you stay up late whatever it find time every day and give it to God and read your Bible and pray that will change your life it'll change your life for some of you it's like a it's like a church thing like you're a Christian and you read your Bible and but you're not you're not connected into a community of believers and I'm just gonna tell you right off the bat all right in the New Testament a Christian without a church is an oxymoron can't find you in the New Testament can't be wandering from church to church you've got to find a place you've got to find a community of people it has to be a place that you you like the vision and you you know you kind of see kind of see yourself there and you've got to start putting together weekends where you're there weekend after weekend after we start making it a habit of coming to church on the weekend one church where you can be known and where you can know other people that's an important step to take your spiritual life we'll go to a whole nother level if you make that decision to make weekend's a habit if so many other things that I could mention what is it that the Lord is dealing with you about he's trying to get his hands on you he's trying to bring you into a new level in your relationship with him because your life will go to a whole nother level come on everybody say new wine come on a new way of thinking a new anointing a new relationship with God you receive that today can we thank God for the word everybody every location
