we're back with another trader joe's hall and we've got five plant-based items to show you or so there may be a couple bonuses here we go hey everybody this is dylan and this is reeves we eat a healthy whole food vegan oil-free diet so today we've picked out five items or so from trader joe's that don't have any added oil or animal products of course but some of these might have some added salt and sugar and i thought it'd be interesting if we kind of go over that as we go through each product do a little taste test and have some fun really all right let's do it the nice thing about these items and trader joe's in general is you can find some pretty healthy items they're not going to be totally sos free like the products we sell free of added salt oil and sugar but you can usually find them oil free which for me as a consumer is the most important out of the three is to find it without the oil okay i want to taste this our first item that we found is this organic split pea soup it's actually oil free i was very surprised yeah if i look at the ingredients it's got all nice healthy whole food items but then a lot of salt it looks like why don't you taste it and tell me what you think before i tell you how much salt in it oh okay it looks nice it looks like split pea soup i love split pea soup do you really do you make it never made it for me what that's false that is very salty they anna just call it split salt soup it's really salty the flavor is good seasoned not the way that i would want it to be since we're people that eat food without salt we like a lot of the seasoning to come from the whole food ingredients which there are a lot of them in here but in this entire can there are 1200 milligrams of sodium that's a lot if i was in a bind and you needed to take this for travel or something i would eat it i need the calories let's try something else all right it's good it's good to try medium the second thing i found was this jackfruit in barbecue sauce in pouch that you can cook in the pouch this is the microwave movement by the way i know you're not the biggest fan but i love barbecue pulled jackfruit do you want to look at the ingredients again it's pretty clean it's mostly you know real food there's some soy sauce give it some saltiness caramelized sugar powder whatever that is uh there's some corn starch and things but it you know it's not so bad but the sodium per container the whole container which you're obviously not going to eat is 810 milligrams so there's a third less salt in this whole container than that one can of soup that you are designed to eat the entire thing of really which was really salty jackfruit tacos it's way too sweet they don't even have to do it last week i would rather just rinse this really well and put it in a pan with some wild world barbecue sauce and it would take like a minute and a half well yeah but you still have to have a stove and this is convenient because it's in the microwave pack so this is not for me thank you trader joe's for the jackfruit the next product i picked up was gnocchi pretty clean i mean it's just potatoes wheat flour rice flour and that's pretty much it there's no added salt wow really that's great but what about like the dextrose and lactic acid like i don't even know what that means is it healthy or is it not you'd prefer not to have stuff with it because it says to preserve so they're preservatives you prefer things without preservatives but if it's a convenience food you're gonna have to settle for at least a little bit like for example in our products there's a little bit of citric acid in some of them not to preserve but it's not like a whole food ingredient so there are some things that you have to just be okay with um so i look forward to trying this i will say that i've never eaten gnocchi that i like it just tastes like you're chewing on nothing that's pretty much what gnocchi is so apparently i just have to drop this in water for two minutes i didn't buy an extra what can we make to sauce it up oh i got something just over there this here the well your world a marinara magnifica pasta sauce let's try it out garbage it's not whole wheat flour it's white flour and it's rice flour which makes it probably white rice flour so this is just enriched junk food i didn't realize i thought oh no salt maybe we've got like a real whole food product but it's just processed refined white flour in a dumpling with some potato flakes it tastes like paper and glue to me let's try something else let's do something we know is good well what do you think fourth time's the charm okay this is what i found it's a mango jicama slaw okay looks like it's mango jicama cabbage cilantro and then it comes with a vinaigrette do you want to talk about that so what's in the vinaigrette a bunch of sugar and canola oil okay so you bought this for the salad not the dressing yeah i like to do that a lot if you pay attention to the ingredients sometimes you can just toss the oil packet and use something different i thought a little chili lime seasoning would be good that on its own with chili lime this is our well your world chili lime would be really good just a little bit like that oh even just that is probably delicious you've got your chili and your lime now you've got a meal mango gives it so much sweetness that it really doesn't need a bunch of dressing no actually this is pretty good yeah that's good as is finally one we like yeah number four product number five rib sound is a dill pickle mustard i bought it because your name's in there that's why yeah let's have a taste this is probably much like any mustard but they've added some dill pickle pieces it's good it tastes like mustard with dill pickle in it so we did have a little bit of this mustard on our carrot dogs last night and it was good because it does taste like mustard it's like they just wanted to make a mustard with a relishy flavor it's still good though yeah it's fine what a dilly of a pickle do we have time for a couple bonus yeah i don't know if i can even call this one a bonus because i messed up on this one this is a vegan super spinach salad and i was gonna say what i used to do is throw the sauce away and just use trader joe's salsa or something like that instead but i just noticed that there's actually a little bit of oil on the cranberries uh well that's pretty common for cranberries it's really hard to find cranberries without the oil so if that's your biggest problem not so bad well let's try it okay looks pretty good we've got our well your world sweet heat dressing let's pour a little bit in shake rattle and roll yeah sure what's not to like it's all veggies very good i like a busy salad it's got lots going on i like the quinoa mm-hmm the seeds are nice it's delicious ooh that sweet heat has a kick it's really happy okay the last item i picked up this time is korean fermented gochujang if you don't know what this is it's a korean item that they use in bibimbap all the time take a look at this a red pepper paste i mean it's a spicy sweet usually taste what do we got in here tapioca syrups one of the first ingredients what is that like a sugar i think so salt is usually very salty because it's kind of like a miso paste would be it's up to you whether you eat things that are this salt concentrated we actually have a video where we made a version of this from scratch but it's interesting that trader joe's decided to make one why don't we put it on the mango salad since we didn't put dressing on it okay it's pretty thick and pasty so like if you were going to make a dressing out of it you'd probably want to add a little water it tastes just right but it is something you just use a little bit of i mean i would in this whole salad maybe use a tablespoon because it is really salty i love trader joe's i love shopping there for our whole food ingredients but i honestly would recommend just sticking to the whole food ingredients some of these things are convenience foods for great great for travel but for the most part i like the frozen items that are like single ingredient veggies that are really just time has been saved by having them all ready for you and i still need to go home and actually cook we just wanted to try something new today yeah it was fun thanks for picking out some
