[Music] CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by exceptionally smooth Michelob where you're going it's mikkel old vaanu chrysler corporation we don't want to be the biggest we just want to be the best and by DeBeers the name that stands for diamonds a diamond is forever welcome back to giant stadium second half about to get underway George Rogers the leading ball carrier 41 yards rushing 10 carries in the first half we did not see Earl Campbell you wonder what thumb Phillips is going to do next year with with these two guys he says things are going to change a little bit I had a nice visit with him once when its ranking and he says that what they plan to do is number one maybe even put the two guys in the same backfield get out of the I formation actually have two running backs not a tailback pullback type of coke to the offense and maybe then use he has four tight ends use a one back attack and rotate those two guys in there but I'll tell you for the amount of money it costs to have him sitting on the bench it's not a real good investment well maybe that's why he come figures that's it's time to get out yeah I don't know you wonder if maybe bums trying to send a message to somebody these two guys may have to fight for this job next year course mom says he feels they will compete the best guy a lineup to be the starter based on training camp performance next year you see kicking off for the New York - coming out a jitter feels short kickoff at the 18th of the 25 and jitter takes it out to the 28 yard line but to get back to the fact should you give up a number one pick for an earl campbell next year I really really have to question it well Frank that's again goes to a philosophy thing George Allen who was very successful one of the most successful coaches would do it at any time I would not do it now that doesn't make me right somebody else wrong or me wrong and somebody else right I would not do it because I really think those first-round pick people as I said early in the game have to contribute at least 10 years to your program and if you're only gonna get three or four years of service out of a guy that may not be a good investment Rogers philosophy Rogers told us yesterday he wants to carry the ball 25 times a game that would make him comfortable there's not going to be 25 carries for him and you know you need two balls well he he really doesn't by the philosophy well if you kick if you divide the time you'll get to play long races coach I'm not interested playing longer I want to play harder and more often Nate's leading by a score of seven to three first and ten at their 28 yard line Wilson was five out of nine for 59 yards in the first half and Dave Wilson comes out Troy so everybody covered so he simply threw that one away first half possessions for the New Orleans Saints very successful their first time they got their hands on the football driving 72 yards for the touchdown but that was it as far as the long offensive Drive is concerned it'll be second in 10 for the Saints again Dave Wilson one of two quarterbacks in the NFL who calls his own plays 26 out of 28 teams you gotta have a lot of guts as the coaches let your quarterback call the plays and of course that's a philosophy across the 30 to the 32 yard line that's one of the big reasons coach's gift for caught on the play so that everyone knows on their side of the ball what's upcoming each assistant coach can zero in in the position that he coaches and teachers all week in preparation for the game and he can then evaluate why the play broke down sometimes you'll eliminate a play from your game plan which only one little minor adjustment need to be made and will be a successful play the other thing is quarterbacks have strengths and weaknesses and they don't want to ever look bad so they'll call things that they feel stronger about be the best singer third and six for the shanks of their 32 Wilson on third and six gone the guys out he gets nothing that's an unusual call for 36 well that's a good to change up once in a while okay again Lawrence Taylor did a nice job all-pro job he's going to toss the ball deep moving to the right of the screen Leonard Marshall number 70 working inside out 55 Geary reason does a nice job Lawrence Taylor polishes him off right there good job of defense third and six and they come running right back horns Taylor who's killed him in the first half I wonder if the quarterback call that boy for some are sent in from the bench obviously Bryan Hansen getting the kick away and it's a good one Lionel Manuel the 32 the 32 yard maybe the 33 yard line moving tide so put it in play for the first time in the second half [Applause] 39 on the punt 3 on the return the Giants of the first half a pretty good field position but not much in the way of a result they did get the 37-yard field goal from Ozzie chic but then they had a touchdown nullified on the penalty they had a field goal of 48-yarder nullified on a penalty and that's the reason they're behind right now 7 to 3 in the first half 8 out of 15 Hill comes out throw a big blitz by Ricky Jackson sings run straight up the middle across the 40 to the 42 yard line Dennis Winston number 56 of the stop [Applause] Sims never gave up you know with all the problems he had with the injuries he's had two knee injuries the shoulder injury the thumb injury you talk Toby said I knew I was got to be an outstanding quarterback in this league and I never got discouraged even with all of the injuries while he stayed healthy this year is that Brent told you on the pregame show and that's made an awful big difference in this New York jives team second down one [Music] there are 42 yard line and Jackson is coming since gets it away from Manuel Weimer came down with the ball but they say it was out of bounds David Weimer number 44 the defensive back nice defensive play the ball was right on the money and babe Weimer playing corner about as well as it can be played see the ball going up to the top of your screen is coming down now Weimer number 44 goes in see him there right the middle east screen he reaches up they're both gone for the ball he has the ball one foot down good call good call he was out of bounds he didn't get both feet down and didn't have member that one game one hip one back one toe you know equals goofy something like that situation goodness the Saints have come with a blitz on just about every play this series [Applause] first down for the Giants that needed just a couple over the left side he got him at the 45 yard line look at the trench work here now lineman button heads defensive lineman taken on blockers linebacker safety Frank watt LED up in there 99 Tony Elliott moving in there boom bang he flipped over carpenter upside down and backwards [Applause] [Music] first in ten if they're 45 yard-line Sims completing the pass the manual again Ricky Jackson was coming in that time carpenter did a good job of blocking him up high it's better to stay high much better to stay high now watch Ricky Jackson number 57 sees Doggett inside now now we've got the tight end Zeke mullet working outside in the zone by gray now nice route there by Lionel Manuel nice go stick move to the inside then worked to the outside gets up catches the ball in its highest point gets knocked out of bounds good play only had one foot in bounds but he was knocked out by the defendant first intent for the Giants of the Saints 40 yard line to another first down at the 29-yard line at this ace Frank there is a change in tempo I feel it right now in the New York Giants [Applause] that's a very big pass for phil simms because it puts him over the 4000 yard mark for the season those are the quarterbacks who have passed for 4000 yards in one season as you can see there's only 10 or 11 on there and three of the quarterbacks accomplished that this year though since now a member of that group first and ten at the 29-yard line down to the 25 and slides in the 23 for he is tank you know that really Frank the remarkable thing about all is passing yards for the young receivers this year of course Oh miss gray is back in he but he missed a number of games and and to be playing with the likes of Lionel Manuel and a seven round draft choice a rookie you know an inexperienced tied in and Zeke Mowatt Bobby Johnson a free agent these kinda guys has a tremendous job and you have to give credit to run here are at the quarterback coach and Pat Hodgson so we see the cook they did a great job second down to get outside and stumbles forward about the 21 yard line so he got a couple yards on the plate and the Giants got to be looking at a third and perhaps two needed for the first down take a look at the blocking on Ricky Jackson number 57 Zico jumps out he thinks he's got him hooked but Ricky just maintained a leverage working inside on the play look at carpenter gets a nice knock down on Russell Gary but Bach tell Ricky Jackson did a nice job on that look at the effort there of Joe Morris it pays to be shortened sometimes they spot the ball at the 22 so we'll make it third and three for the New York tax at the belongings 22 yard line Jack Alexander period hanging over the right fashion [Music] shotgun Sims wide open cutout juggle it come on it's a first down at the 8th and that almost sent Bill Parcells to an early grave Oh okay they came after him with all the linebackers up in there and for some reason they were trying to cover that back out in the backfield with a guy lined up inside he was too far away from him see the coverage was way too far behind him to cover him on the outside move beverage looks great concentration after he flipped it up in the air Chuck coverage going to dr. Jim Kovacs number 52 14-yard pickup on the Giants in a first and goal from the 8 Giants going for the lead carpenter to cut back and he's one of the best of cutting back but it tough to cut back when there's nothing there and there wasn't the thing really tough to cut back when you're cutting back to the right right back into the deepest again Bruce Clark and I noticed that on film it's tough to cut back on him now watch Bruce part number 75579 tame that backside leverage on the ball they do a real good job of that he picked up a yard it'll be second and goal from the seven this pulse tanks did a great job at the goal line defense line up with nothing Sims under pressure Jackson's back little high-low job Jackson on top and Bruce Clarke on the bottom and Richmond out for the loss back at the 12 and Joe Morris the little man Miska blocked that time but it cost the Josh dearly see it goes back to what we said in the first half if you cut block a quality athlete linebacker watch 20 as he crosses Joe Morris now watching tried to cut him down see what Jackson did he stepped right over the top of him too good an athlete to cut down you're better off button him right up underneath the chin and taken your licks but get the quarterback protecting first that's why Jackson's going to the Pro Bowl because he's such a great athlete he's if I say here's a personal duel going on with number 56 Laurens hair burdened oligos - it out back at their 14 sins looking in the endzone in trouble behind the ladder and caught again this time prank war numbers with a chorus of boos Frank you're holding on to the ball too long the coverage is taken away the patterns when you're in field goal range and Phil has enough experience to know this you should not hang on to the football get it in the end zone and shorten that field goal kick for your kicker that's all there is to it now two Saints by that graphic you can see upon the sack war so far having traffic Sims six times in Wilson has been virtually untouched ally Sheik hit one from 37 and had another from 48 nullified because of a penalty we'll pick this one from 40 yards away five for 11 this year come up with zero so credit the Saints defense with another great job as the Giants got near the goal I did a real good job they did and I think they're breaking down fundamentally is some of that pass protection technique willows running backs trying to cut those linebackers department store Santa Clauses this afternoon wait a couple hours he'll be there because right now he's enjoying the football game along with the rest of us [Applause] Rogers break the reverse tongue out of the football got a couple of yards out of it Gary reasons makin the stop he wasn't buying really good fundamental linebacker played by Gary reasons the rookie out of Northwest Louisiana State I set in the training room the other day and talked to him he had a nice bag on one shoulder and the ice bag on one knee in an ice bag on the ankle I mean he had enough ice to really post about sick cocktail parties over the Christmas holiday he says playing this inside linebacker and pro football's a little tougher than it will be and I'm really going to eat then it wasn't college and I'm really gonna need a good offseason wake program he picked up just a yard on the play got a second in mind for the Saints after on 24 yard line to cling into this set of the three lead [Applause] Dave Wilson to Wayne Wilson I think Wayne expected that thing to come at him with the velocity of did almost knocked him down there will screen pass out the backside of that formation I'd lineman out in front of but he actually slipped when he caught the football it is a little slippery we did have some rain overnight kind of a light gentle chilling room but it did stop early this morning but the field is wet and after turf I think more often than not is better a little wet and totally dry why is that I guess sometimes it shoes and attraction sometimes getting so good that can get to good attraction then you're getting injuries that occur without contact man five minutes remaining in the third period [Applause] showing blitz here they come they did a good job of blocking Taylor that time and kept him away from the quarterback Wilson Brenner the intended receiver I think though I think I think Wilson could hear him coming and almost felt him breathing you can see here junior Miller number 84 tied in the backside of a double tight information actually he's holding him what a good job that should be called you can't have your hands out there but he kept coming and I know Dave Wilson is conscious of that kind of pressure coming off the backside he told us that yesterday Manuel will be the defense to make the for a rookie and that will be the end of the line fishers are going to market at the 39-yard line one of the Saints shaken up on the play 42 yards on the punt five on the return we've got a timeout after the giant Saints game hook's DePaul and Georgetown number two battling number one at Landover Maryland at the Capitol Center most of you will see that basketball game those of you in the southwest will be watching Tulsa take on the Arkansas Razorbacks of Eddie Sutton so two outstanding basketball attractions right after this one he'll merkins towards the state shaken up on the play but he left the field under his own power seems to be alright he is he'll be taking care of herself because bum said he's one of those guys can do all first antenna to the product their own 39 fill since they're pressuring him he can't sit on the reception just short of the first down he could have run a long way had the weimar under 40 fort not made that tackle secure dice have had their problems on first down as you can see Saints do him a lot better in that department Saints doing a lot more blitzing I think than they normally do they seem to be coming on just about every place at night wasn't Asian well it depends what you call it blitz they're bringing a linebacker all the time man I bought a set of blitz is when they would poke safety well that's a nice linebacker play right there by Jim Kovacs number 52 Morris the running back getting nothing is Kovac the good doctor comes in to make a house call you know you'd think being as academic as he is a Phi Beta Kappa doll he wouldn't like all this tough stuff he said coach I'd actually like it if we were more physical even on the practice field he sound like it didn't it yeah yeah he almost sounded like the Saints weren't working him enough hahaha I don't believe that but you've never heard of player say that though no no but he uses those big words he says every once a while to confuse those guys who line up around good effort great job by carpenter look like he was stopped behind the line of scrimmage kept driving kept driving and he got the first down at the 49 yard line in the Saints under the field first and ten Giants and you say do they want to win this football game it's meaningless look at this guy look at a second Derrick boom bang he's keep fighting for that first down nice job by Rob Cartman Bruce Clark was a little upset on that he thought he headed from the back he was jumping up and down home matter John's been over the football up and down the field Sims linebackers all over him delivers the football short of the intended receiver Zeke Moen number 84 who was covered by Jackson you can see why if Bruce Clark is an all-pro see him lined up here the three-point stance right inside the linebacker number 75 there he's on the rookie Carl Nelson 63 battle get your hands out Carl that's it pushing out in there and get some help that's it good job that's all illegal blocking now this push and shove game now you tried to make him a nose tackle yesterday when we talked to Bruce card he didn't like that he liked this his coach he said like play five years longer playing defensive and I don't want any part of that knows it anybody that suggests second and ten - Leigh Morris didn't fool Frank Warren big number 73 in the four year who is a third-round draft choice back in 1981 perhaps him off behind the line of scrimmage I tell you you have to give the New Orleans Saints some real credit here her coaching staff bun Phillips right on down to their assistant coaching staff these guys are ready to play and you know here they aren't not a playoff contender they're a team that at the beginning of the year when we did their first game prank they were considered a pie off contender the Giants were not now it's 360 degrees it's the other way around and here they are playing and bump told you and easy I have character people they will play hard 13 Saints go with five defensive backs against phil simms guiding the Giants out of the shotgun and far over the football drops the football as he said from the blindside by James gathers number 97 [Applause] [Music] that's James together six and that's a lot of sex for a look now you know why they drafted e number two like it coming around the right-hand side of your screen scene worked right around there boom he gets on him right there Carl Nelson getting beat on the sack time to recover Jenny gonna do the bunny they do for a big one growth is deep it feels it at the start of the game he found the devil you're handed Jeff growth is back there now fair catch signal on the 18 yard line 41 yards on the punt a minute 51 left to play in the third period scores the same the st. 7 the Giants three back in a minute and she doesn't have an S painted on his jersey but he's certainly a marked man watch him here Perry is here remember in the first half he did a great job of covering the punt look at these two guys there to it hey that's not legal guys that's not legal all right for bail what are you going to tell me they have to start throwing more flags [Applause] most of it George Rogers and again we have not seen Earl Campbell thus far this afternoon for whatever reason the bum figures and Rogers is going good and he's going to live in there that's the time left in the third quarter every once in a while Tanner gets blocked here he is watching working on the play the plays going away from a boom nice block there Oh pancake block oh oh I've been humiliated uh-huh nice job who was it that was fire open fire and he's going to talk about that all offseason you for the day that I leveled Lawrence they say Jordan tell me that guy's tough up buddy mother's been [Applause] second and seven from the 22 Dave Wilson goes over the Milka flips the pass for Wayne Wilson up to the 40 to the 45 yard line you talk about Neal Murchison a lot of other people being handy to have her out here is a handy man gross who can run the football for you he can catch it he's a fine athlete yes then he combined with Dave Wilson for 24 yards in a first out he really is handy and talented in the off season Frank he works as a substitute teacher [Applause] the business market at the Saints 45 yard line wide to the right side Larry Artie the sideline toss behind party the intended receiver takes us down to the 22 second mark here in the third period Saints leading it by a score of 7 to 3 Dave Wilson is upset he gave the tight end a pump movement even would turn up the sideline and he didn't turn up the sideline and it upset him he's going to have to undergo a shoulder operation probably this week got a rotator cuff problem he said it's just constant pain it's in pain if when he was playing backup quarterback he didn't throw enough on the practice field to bother him but once it became the starter for couple weeks ago really started coming back so they're gonna go ahead and get fixed they said they're 45 Wilson thought control down the sidelines of the play before the growth and Jeff both is out of bounds at the 38 yard line great hands yeah this guy is clever little guy he reminds me of Pat Tilley here he is in the top of your screen number 86 coming off on Kenny Daniel number 24 he kidding catch up with Kenny don't be that conservative too much room now they come up and go ahead and put him out better tackle better net nice job by Bill Courier good pass protection though given him all kinds of time you see Leonard Marshall being blocked right there did a nice job there comes Lawrence Taylor right at the end oh and a way to pull off of Arabia another first down for the Saints this time at the 38 yard line that's the first pass they've drawn in Kenny Daniel I think maybe they got the message in just seconds remaining in the third quarter here at the Medellin [Applause] gone to fit George Rogers the former Heisman Trophy winner takes it down to the 35 final seconds ticking away in the third period at the end of three the Saints maintain their Vantage that's the end of the third quarter with the score seven the New York Giants three we now pause for a word from your local station unlike the ball CBS Sports coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by Chevrolet who invite you to see drive and live today Chevrolet Michelob light super premium taste in a less filling beer and by RCA creators a video technology that excites the senses [Music] frankly / along with dick premier welcome back to the metal ass the way second and seven sinks Shyne 35 yard line they've listened back to throw tried to set up a screen to Wilson birth was through there quickly Taylor would have been through there quickly but they about tackled him he reached out and grabbed him by the Jersey and then there is no call now you want what I guess what you coaches say you want consistency from the referee right well there's so many things go on in the football game is such a fast game that is getting to a point where it's really difficult for the officials they handled everything you know that at midseason the penalties were up 15% right now it's only frequency it is [Applause] thirty-five Wilson back to throat again goes for growth at the 25 and down to the 20-yard line and really Terry Canard had pretty good coverage on good coverage great concentration by Jeff broke the pattern receiver is Bob Phillips causing as we look at the quarterback you can see him now look to the right there he is you can throw right over the middle of screen look at the defense he back right there on it Terry canards fighting him he just gets him down nice job of concentration and catching that ball this guy is you know he's more important than the 4/4 guy when you catch the ball that consistently [Applause] [Music] ladies first intent for the sakes the giant 20-yard line formation this time Wilson going for six and overthrows Tyrone in the sky they call him because he's six feet six and a got a tremendous wingspan but even that was too tall for him Loren's traitor tried to get the heat on him but he was picked up nicely right here you see Chris Ward number 72 the big 280 pound tackle from Ohio State on to the New York Jets now playing of New York again but for the New Orleans Saints it brings up another interesting name speaking of playing in New York Richard Todd was the saint starting quarterback cost them a number one draft choice okay I believe he's working you don't have a back you can breathing started maybe plate he's gonna safety place second in ten Wilson six now playing in New York again but for the New Orleans Saints it brings up another interesting name speaking of playing in New York Wichita was the saint starting quarterback cost them a number one draft choice okay I believe he's working don't have a quarterback to complete starting then you played he's given safety clicks second and ten Wilson sees it coming but Hardy was slow coming out he was guarded by Byron hunts and the tight end was the intended wide receiver getting back to Richard Todd you know sometimes he goes from a quarterback that a few years ago said at the New York jet record for throwing the fewest interceptions in a single season to a frustrating there this year this year Franken sometimes that's because of a pass protection breakdowns injuries in the offensive line new systems everything else by hour I sincerely believe as a former coach that that guy is a winning quarterback you think that number one pick they gave for him is okay well you might give a number one for a quarterback and ten and now a Dave Wilson lost the call timeout I've never given number one for a quarterback if I thought I had one in my game but that one guy could make the difference and he's young enough to play four or five more years [Applause] rookies Christmas day good day to watch blue-gray game Montgomery Alabama annually that produces some of the outstanding players last year Louie lips came out of that game among others well men also are crystal clear for yes matter so on Christmas Day the Philadelphia 76ers take on the Detroit Pistons at 3:30 Eastern Time we're talking about Richard time playing in New York we know we are in New Jersey but I understand it's a rather tender issue came here to play we all saw her playing New York lead when you play third and ten big play for the Saints at the 20-yard line Giants coming on strong and Taylor this time was the one shot who stayed back and maybe should have intercepted the ball he thought he should here we go look at Perry Williams going to take away that slant the ball didn't get there he makes contact where the guy puts old Tyrone too young down on the ground that's the best place to put that six foot seven receiver is on the ground everybody's as tall as he is down there Marquis Anderson with a field goal effort from 37 yards away long enough and good anderson who spent a lot of the more consistent in the leave this year that's his 20th field goal in 26 fries and it builds the Saints margin once again back to seven points time out here in New Jersey [Applause] Marcel's team would be playing this game for a spot in the playoffs as it is now they have to wait see what happens tomorrow have to have Washington beat st. Louis and Dallas lose to Miami today have affected the Giants a little bit great kick this guy's a fine picker one of the better kickers in football I think right now there's a lot of the kickers but this ball might be ranked up there in the top three and going the fans are ready I'll kill you that if nothing else they trailed ten to three and the first in ten a third 25 [Applause] after near the 25-yard line we'll pick up a five on the play before Bruce Clark number 75 I wrapped him up and he's been in on a ton of tackle I'd rather run at him and away from him I really would because I think I could cut back better see him number 75 right in the middle screen trying to be cut off by Carl Nelson 63 it is tough to cut this guy off he's so strong good leverage he's not real tall but he has that good body strength and he good leverage on the offender he's always here front second down [Applause] Morris they could hand off from soon distributing for us you know they have a different left tackle in the game now William Roberts number 66 the young rookie number one pick on Ohio State's playing left tackle and starting left tackle Brad Benson has moved into left guard in place of Dave Jordan I think maybe they felt that that the Dave Jordan Brad Benson combination that guard tackle was given to a pass protection brat choices this year back there was the other for that's good for the first down but a while between fast completions but that time John misled on the receiving end of that throw and it's fans we're excited about that first down it doesn't take much to get him excited in these giant fans are wonderful wonderful trains I've been in the stadium a number of times and it's amazing how loyal they are a waiting line I guess a mile long just to buy a ticket to get into this place well you could say the same thing about your old Eagle fans no question about those Eagle fans bursting 10 at the 32-yard line since the propel the task after the 35 of the 37 yard line wins a ticket of 67 what do you think is gonna happen on that day and that whole Philadelphia situation here fairly close to some of those people or I'm close to those people but since I left as a football coach I haven't maintained kind of relationship and yet I know what's really going on friends with the players and coaches yes but I never really did know was going on financially they didn't want me to ever be involved with those kind of problems breaking concentration I kind of believe they're going to end up staying there if someone in Philadelphia will come in and back from financial I know mr. tose does not want to leave [Applause] for the first time - at their 37 yard line Sims with the sidelines will and ten for Joe Morris another case of bull repellent hands you know he caught that ball every time they threw it on the practice field Thursday and Friday here is a little out pattern as a deep corner going in behind him the same pattern that they threw that tied in early in the game that Mohawk caught going on the 3 yard line should have caught that football maybe one of his contact lenses got a little blurry that time sure the down he caught it real well on the practice field they're practice players their gameplay he's a game player Helius he dropped the past so easy to be to say that up here for for the tabs at their 37 try to keep the drive going with 11 minutes left to play in the game they're down by seven sighs oh that's complete for a first down - Ernest Brett know the plate questionnaire that might have been a con job by the bench let's say mr. Fishman will give us a shot on this one shotgun formation nice snap hit him write the number he's pedaling back looking off to his left he lays it out there in the L pattern here it goes right to the sidelines follow the ball catches it one foot - oh he's in all the way official better donate his this cheque to charity on that call put that in huh it looked pretty good for me now come on back me no you're the analyst your opinion a chance to look at it after the fun ice man almost got away from Jennings 22:25 and out of bounds of the 29 yard line grilled out of bounds by Carl banks sometimes an official get spawned under the pressure of a sideline being ranked for the bench they say they don't but I always believed as a coach they did here's the ball is down there's one foot down there now watch the right foot drag it kicked up hurt that's in that's a gimme and that's not even a close call [Applause] for me we'll back at the Meadowlands in New Jersey first intense situation for the New Orleans Saints as Phil Simms on the telephone trying to get some advice from upstairs he's 12 out of 23 for a total of a hundred and twenty seven yards names I'm Dave Wilson has been out of 24 a hundred and fourteen yards Wilson going with the shortstop for the most part today hits Larry Hardy the tight end for eight yards bill Courier number 29 is there to make the stop in talking today yesterday Frankie said coach if you see us in the I formation on first down we're probably going to run the toss or run some kind of play-action pass out of that there was the I formation with a play-action pass he also told us he says he is conscious of getting the ball to George Rogers and the Earl Campbell you quarterback birdie shouldn't have to worry about in archaic be still human being you're still a person - you're still a guy who's with those guys also anything it's impossible for them [Applause] not much at all therefore when Wilson was he stopped at the line of scrimmage Jim Burke number 64 the nose tackle in the middle of this one watch the nose tackle right there number 64 being turned there by Courtland he jump act into the play nice squatty guy he's built lower the grounds got he is a tough tough component he likes to play that position please walk that blue spot he likes it when stuff third down a yard made it for the first half and that was Campbell I believe whatever Gamble in for the first time this afternoon picks up the first down on his first carry what's in those guard here again at Jim Burt number 64 on steamed pork to center-right pneumonia screen watching but the center straighten him up right there did his job now he needs help from other people but you also saw that somebody else block team as well that's nosy people don't like the play desk my nose tackle they say is like a fire hydrant at a dog show oh that's a lot of attention first and ten at the 42 yard line Wilson trying to hit growth he hit him and he hung on to it this guy he is a very impressive receiver he catches that ball watches coming right at you now coming to west side of your screen Guinea Daniel number 24 starts to peddle out he sees the short pass he's charging the ball fright from riding a screen moon contact mate but he kept that ball saying you can catch the football even though you're being hit if you really concentrate and realize that the ball or the reception is more important than your health he's got a brother that is not standing baseball player so he's a much better athlete much more disciplined [Music] second down for the getting the call and Earl out of the 45 yard line on his second carry the afternoon Jim Burke 64 and Curtis McGriff for 76 on the stop let me throw a stat you crank you know this guy Earl Campbell he's a great back has carried the ball for four point eight miles in his career how do you like that's pretty good impressed you think we'll ever see both of those guys in the same backfield Campbell and Rodgers - so who's a black thing I don't think you can justify having those two guys unless you get him in the back feeling bummed to tell us well bumps going to have to make that decision and he indicated to us he you may see some of that next year and both in their home Phillips knows what he's doing so he's got a block first and ten from the 45 yard line Wilson going down to about the 42 yard line Josh come up with it but the officials say no it had been whistled dead at one time in a conversation with John wouldn't it be CLA when I was a coach there he told me if he ever have two great players at one position don't try to make them both happy make sure one is happy because if you try to make both happy neither will be happy and neither will play up to their ability make sense well that's the job that mr. Phillips's got apparently he can handle he's got more experience six minutes forty seconds left to play in the game ladies they also have to speculate well suppose it to careful forty inside 235 and it takes four times to bring him down at the 33 yard line well if one doesn't get you the other one will obviously well-rested last week wellit's alternated the two running backs by quarters nice eye formation watch them wing back number 87 right the cornea screen II hook box right there by 104 mr. Campbell look at the power in that guy look at him again the five guys run to bulldogging down and they finally get in there he's warned the entire side secondary on top of were there first down at the dan Campbell over the right side inside the 30 to the 29 yard line there's a man thinking about his future no doubt Ali chic Jenny's had had a good day Ali is upset he's a nice long field goal that he did kick successfully penalized no good here he is on the downside right now and hooked the last one rather badly after that great year he had last year it has to be a let go enjoy but Bill Parcells told us both of those guys are doing everything we have to do as a player to be good it's the left side that is not about the 25-yard line ten years left in him but he's got a few I think boy what horsepower let's see what the marker was all about [Applause] over 1300 yards a year in his career [Applause] pretty awesome numbers against the Giants and the critical penalties have come against the Giants all day if you missed the first half did cost him touchdown in a field goal both plays they were penalized and they got neither score back and time will soon become a factor with the clock reading four minutes 53 seconds Byron Hunt was offside and Taylor may have been a little shaken up on that last play he's trying to get it back again coming up tomorrow the NFL on CBS and we got the big one for a lot of people st. Louis in Washington with the NFC Eastern Division title at stake and those of you in other parts of the country will see Chicago and Detroit Green Bay Minnesota and Philadelphia closing out against Atlanta that's the advantage of doing a Saturday game I got the locked up lack of their playoff handle on second and one looking for enough space to pick up the first down Lawrence Taylor hit on the middle of the stop eat it only a couple of feet there's bomb tent here in the National Football League fourth year as head coach of the New Orleans Saints Percy was with Houston six years made the playoffs three times [Applause] bumm say he wasn't going to Jacksonville even if they were whatever it is somebody else is not going to control my future I'm staying where I am if they stay there and want me to coach that's fine and if not that's fine too and he has a lot of pride that old line he had about a defeat loss was like a death in the family said you never forget it sooner or later you get over he's had like nine deaths to the family content sakes at the 23-yard busting is right out of about the 21 so power football you know Sid Gillman have a heart attack watch nice do I know if he's watching this at home he never hired I formation Oh football you can't do that Rogers coming back into the game number 38 let's see Campbell sing me you want me out of there you want me to stay in [Applause] Rainn Wilson is out let's look at the size of this guy I believe with one running back in that of course would be Rogers on 2nd and 8th [Music] guys working on the guys the clock as well [Applause] looking for some place to go is to turn the corner Trey Kinard de canard was over there number 43 very good safety play Frank he really came up and put the pads to him really a good job [Applause] virtually nothing on that play former number one draft choice a year ago and a replaced the Beasley Reis at that position I came walking in the locker room by Thursday morning early and they said house time it's said Timex you know the time next to zoo that they called Wilbert Montgomery yeah takes a lickin and keeps on tickin and that's what they call them all this time we've got a timeout looks like the drink is going to do low picking for us he'll pick the winner of Lee to fall Georgetown game which is next on CBS as well as the big game between Seattle and Denver later on this afternoon and Brent we'll have an interview with Gary Carter the newest of the New York Mets in a preview of tomorrow's big game between st. Louis and Washington he wants that ball don't like a Sims warming up getting hit think he needs better protection and I'll tell you this so you've got to give credit to the New Orleans Saints coverage they have taken cuttings away down here Saints have the ball right now they have a third and ten at the time Cyril young and Moshe Campbell on the third and ten play gets maybe a yard at most and that's it but that will bring on the usually reliable Morten Andersen and a field goal here means obviously that the Giants would have to score twice in the last three minutes and 15 seconds and when you haven't scored at all in 57 minutes that's going to be tough that is a load more from the young man who played at Michigan State while AG sheikh was play speaking for michigan this guy speaks six different languages sort of like you and me right yeah he's going back to going to Austria originally from Denmark came over here as a high school exchange student and then someone saw him kick and offered in the scholarship at Michigan State and he eventually replaced Tony fritsch is the kicker of the Sates rather unusual shoe apparel therefore a kicker two different color shoes there Owen if that makes a difference I know this he wears those fancy leather pants not many guys wear leather slacks that I have 41 yards on the field goal the same [Applause] but no girl he looks up gonna have two black shoes on or to lectures tremendous power and accurate names of the diets need a touchdown and an extra point to tie with three minutes and 11 seconds to go one of those finishes the plans are on their peak they want your defense has really played the performance this year when you stop to look at the scoreboard think they've given up three points when they've been giving up for the year almost twenty four points a game a great job of coaching and playing organization you know who that inference of coordinators to New Orleans and Wade Phillips bump Phillips his son [Applause] throw the ball effectively since he's been sacked 6-times gets rid of this one mine is leveled as he caught the football he was decked by Terry hope the former Georgia all-american boy he hit him that one he had a reason to drop that because he didn't have time to get it put away it's a seam passed down the hole you'll see 24 coming like that and milling the screen boom right up underneath the chin Norway to catch that football a heck of a job done by a straight-a student boy was that a vicious hit okay goosebumps right hobo's was Carla finest defensive back but then still they never coach to Georgia second and ten Spanish made the pressure does a good job he noticed that time hook slide he said the game is almost over no way am i hook slide and I'm going to be a running back right now that's why the players and why the coaches in New York like this guy so much because he is a top senator game fight with anybody some of his best friends are defensive players that tells you something about it here's a good quarterback this position 10 Giants at their 41 touchdown of course in extra form could send us to overtime Sims over the middle it's up for grabs and picked off big interception by Bobby Johnson & Johnson carries it back to the 48 well credit the block in the middle because that thing went up for grads and Johnson a free agent last year went to camp with the Dallas Cowboys and was released and later picked up by the Saints comes up with what could be the biggest defensive player the game you'll see that the quarterback is dropping back same right the milling screen now you're going to see some heat come around from the left of your screen now he tucked up inside and I think that is tony elliot number 99 batted the ball up in the air there is the interception Bobby Johnson has it now here he goes I'm a running back he's going to try to get as many yards as he can without fumbling that football here's the Saints pet you can see that Bob is excited he's had three balls defenses here possessions first interception for the year Wade Phillips the defensive coordinator has to be very proud of this because today [Music] yeah look on the clock with the sample and with big George Rogers and by the way they're both in there at the same time right now these they're wearing that play great well Phil Simms has a little lower drip delivery than a lot of quarterbacks and I think you're going to see him through his career get more balls batted around and tipped into the air like that meaning that the ball leaves his hand a little lower than then say like the name of classic style and say my quarterback Ron Jaworski Philadelphia add that ball up there pretty high a little tougher to tip that kind of ball Frank well you saw the time remaining of the football game two minutes and five seconds and the Saints looking at a second and 10 and Bill Parcells to Phil and Harry Carson and the defense you got a hold him we got to get it back it'll be second down and ten [Applause] - keep in mind no matter what happens today still have a shot at the playoffs but what has to happen is at Washington Asda beats st. Louis and Dallas has to lose to Miami for the Giants to get in what backwards on the sideline bench they're the sidelines with pom Philips science by the way are out of timeouts you know you go all the way back Frank that ball that was caught in bounds called out of bounds at this time really becomes a big play several you go back to the mistakes the Penley serve at Garcia the Giants a touchdown and a field goal both call back and that could be the difference in the game well Tom Phillips trying to end the season a disappointing year his most disappointing on a plus note [Applause] [Music] second down now from the 48 yard line Wilson gone with the short throw to Earl Campbell in the rule an incomplete forward pass is hurled a little juggling if that girl was going to smile he was going to smile two-minute warning going to both two minutes left to play in the game and the Saints in command 10 to 3 we better get it back to play from their own 49-yard line and the timeout situation looks this way thanks have a pair and the Giants are out New York on the short end of the scoreboard 10 to 3 [Applause] Dave Wilson 11 out of 23 for a hundred and 31 yards this is a young man once threw for 625 yards in a gamete was there one season at Illinois Ohio State for the NCAA record [Applause] and the Saints keep the drive going [Applause] good protection Wilson goes over the metal hits more Nelson but short idiotic needed for the first down Giants have had some problems getting ahold of the football and then hanging on to it once they got home through as interceptions and fumbles will kill you and that's bum Phillips type of football hang onto the ball grind it out fourth down no way now the Giants can stop the clock I met it in 20 seconds Lionel Manuel is the way he'd come up with a big play this guy's an electrifying type guy he makes big plays and every time you talk to the coaches about him they always say this guy made so always now his longest return this year is 22 yards so he needs a real long run right now Saints took all the time they were allotted and the 30-second clock is run out so they'll take the five-yard penalty the clock is now stopped with a minute and fourteen to go [Applause] read Wyatt the referee in on the discussion there with Vito merkins and with Jim Kovac it'll move the ball into the Saints enter the field at the 49 yard line [Applause] see what kind of pressure they put on the rookie has today the Giants have got 10 that up at the line of scrimmage [Applause] we're coming after it [Applause] Hansen went down but no flag very short kick goes out of bounds at the 38 yard line of the Giants Oh obviously at big rush affected the concentration of the putter Brian Hanson and he got off a very very short kick of only 11 yards timeout today postgame show the Greek with his fix Brent talking to Gary Carter and Carter answering the charges of the heroes of he's somewhat of a hot dog and a preview of the st. Louis Washington game I remember a couple of weeks ago here in Foxborough you said st. Louis gonna win the division that means do you think they're going to be the Redskins ma well I thought that because I'd clear every game I give a for st. Louis they played so well but watching their defense play last week I don't know first lieutenant 62 yards away from tying it off Simms over the men to close the door right the waffle at number 14 just going to hang poor judgment making it call and he shouldn't have tried to force that ball you know he had a minute to go [Applause] sometimes you start thinking you got to win the ballgame in one play and that's what happens to you so the Giants will not get that tenth victory of the year instead they'll wind up nine and six the nine victories will tie their total in 1981 last time they were in the playoffs but Bill Parcells wanted very badly to get number ten which would have been the first time since 1963 a Giants team had won that many ballgames and of course Eve if you make the playoffs you don't want to get it on right now but two straight losses yeah I know you lose momentum and a team see by the expression on Bill Parcells face that he's upset disappointed it and very few people can appreciate what a coach goes through and experiencing a loss because thought people have a hard time believing and care that where's that clap on Giants can't stop the clock they're out of time so they're off to do it one more time and that goofy yet Dave Wilson and you just can't say enough about the job that New Orleans Saints did because you know a lot of teams that are coming off a disappointing season playing the last game on the road they it they have their bags packed really all the way before that you know before they get here and they don't play well this is a real credit to pump Phillips and his coaching staff into his squad to come in here and play this well today well you wind up on a plus note at least for the season despite all the disappointments they've had this year they do have the one positive thing to look back on and to build from the 1985 season there should do it [Applause] they're still alive in the playoffs but now they have the Redskins beat st. Louis tomorrow and Dallas lose to Miami on Monday if that happens Bill Parcells team would be in the playoffs otherwise it's a case of wait till next year very much of defensive ball going but I know if I say this on behalf of the Giants if they would have started season knowing if they'd end up the season nine and seven later really been excited looking for the year and you know people predicted them not to win very many games and be last league and here they are a playoff contending football team the season OA forum you have to give them credit for doing a great job probably should be the NFC coach of the year and he may very well be as the Giants wind up nine and seven stay tuned I'll watch for upcoming on the postgame show with Brent Musburger and Brent we'll be back with you in just a moment it's strange as it sounds Jimmy nothing has changed for the Giants Washington still has to beat the Cardinals Miami has to beat the Dallas Cowboys on Monday to get the Giants into the playoffs but what happens now to the odds and every gemacht it's not bad to have going for you Washington is a two-to-one favorite over st. Louis Miami's a two-to-one favorite over Dallas to two to one shots figure five to four so the Giants are ten days favorite to still be in the playoffs alright we've got a lot more coming up your way the Greek is just warming up he's gonna be telling you about that ki basketball game that's coming your way here on CBS number one like Georgetown against second ranked DePaul who will win that game Jimmy's got a strong opinion how about the showdown for the championship of the AFC West the Denver Broncos go into Seattle can they handle the Seahawks and all that noise we'll find out and earlier today I talked to Gary Carter the newest member of the New York Mets we'll find out about his problems with the Montreal Expos some feelings of jealousy within that franchise and we will preview the cards and the skins and of course still ahead of us here on CBS this afternoon college basketball most of you are going to be seen that appalled Blue Demons against the Georgetown Hoyas and the rest of you will see the Razorbacks of Arkansas they will be in action against the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa we will continue with our postgame activities here on CBS in just a moment [Music] let me run quickly through the playoff picture for everybody as I've pointed out that Giants playoff hopes depend entirely on what happens in other games this weekend the Cardinals must lose in Washington tomorrow Dallas must lose to the Miami Dolphins Monday night if that happens then the Giants make the playoffs as a wild-card team and they would play the Rams next Sunday in Anaheim now as for the rest of the NFC the 49ers and bears are already in as champs of their respective divisions now the Eastern Division title will be decided tomorrow in that Cardinal game if the Cardinals lose they are eliminated all together now even if the Redskins lose they're going to be in as a wild-card unless somehow they lose that by 46 points which does not seem likely but in the event that the Dallas Cowboys would be the other wildcard if they beat Miami Monday night okay but if the Dolphins win that game then the Rams would play the Redskins who would have qualified as a wild-card even though they lose to st. Louis now over in the AFC four teams are in the playoffs Miami Denver Seattle and the Raiders now the remaining slot the Central Division race between the Bengals and Steelers will be decided tomorrow but even though the Seahawks and Broncos have clinched playoff berths the AFC West title and a bye in the wild-card round is going to be up for grabs when those two teams go at each other in Seattle later this afternoon because if Denver can somehow come through and upset the Seahawks in Seattle and the Raiders beat Pittsburgh tomorrow in the Coliseum then the Raiders will host the wild-card game next weekend so it becomes extremely important and if the Raiders beat the Steelers all the Bengals would have to do to win the AFC Central that would be to handle the Buffalo Bills in Cincinnati so right now let's send you out to Landover Maryland and a preview of the big basketball game as the teams are coming on the floor here is Gary bender now with Billy Packer Jay bill made you get that all down I wonder what happens Brenda somebody has a tie game tomorrow that's all I know Billy we really feel this game was the rookie coach joy Meyer the 13-year veteran John Thompson facing each other really comes down to a coach's game well it really does for Joey this is the first real test of what he does in this kind of pressure but also for both coaches I think that they both that moves that they've got to make today depending on how their team is react to the other team's pressure so we're gonna see some great coaching strategy in this ballgame and we'll see it early joy Meyer says you got to overcome the fear of Georgetown well one of the good things for his club it's a very experienced team and they beat Georgetown last year basically were the same cast of characters so I think that's one hurdle his team has it is advantage some of the you will be seeing that Tulsa and Arkansas game from Little Rock let's go there now enjoying Bern Lundqvist okay Gary I'm here with Steve grody and we've got another sellout crowd and we're still trying to figure out the NFL playoff picture as well my ankles will be there my bangles will be there count on it interesting Steve that Gary and Billy were talking about a coaching battle with a young coach in DePaul and me a veteran in John Thompson in Tulsa in Arkansas Eddie Sutton and all the Richardson we got two of the more accomplished coaches here as well yeah and I think these are the two more attractive teams to play for they both come out and play basketball of course Sutton's teams are known for their that strong overplay man-to-man defense which just creates all kinds of action it also plays that full-court pressure defense and multiple type defenses they let its nation in scoring last year we have just got a great great ballgame in store for us first time that Nolan Richardson and Eddie Sutton had ever met it ought to be interesting now let's go back to Brent Musburger in New York all right Bern Thank You Jimmy let's turn our attention back to that Georgetown to Paul confrontation the Hoyas have won 17 in a row dating back to last year joy Meyer comes in here ranked second what about that game well they're both 6 and they'll brentner 1 2 in the rankings of course no question about a Georgetown is number one when you've got that Ewing guy going for you you've got everything but the thing about Georgetown is they got 11 players and every one of them is a great athlete and a great basketball player now DePaul to beat Georgetown will have to hit from the outside and hold that pressure down I tell you something Brent I think it's a Georgetown win by 10 Oh giman ask you a bit later about the confrontation between Seattle and Denver but I want to go back out to the Meadowlands because our cross is standing by live with an offensive lineman for the giant Brad Benson nerve then one of the men who of course is a very seldom seen close up like this versus an offensive lineman Brad Benson but you know Brad this is the first time this season the Giants haven't scored a touchdown yes and it was very frustrating to be down that close so many times and and not be able to take advantage of it that's got to be one of the most frustrating things for an offensive lineman because that's really where we get our personal gratification is by putting the ball across the goal line and you're missing those third and ones and third and twos on the Saints four and five I mean that really hurts would you lost it ain't really a reflection of a team maybe coming into the game a little too relaxed maybe overconfident feeling you you should you should have beaten this agent it'll beat him easily I don't really think that was a case going into the game I think that maybe for some reason or another we seem flat I don't think we played like like we were capable of playing we gave the Saints an opportunity to play I think the kind of football that they would like to play and that's just grind it out eat up the clock and unfortunately our offense didn't stay on the field like it should have and keep it keep the ball away from those two big backs of theirs because that's basically what what they want to do and they did it in our pregame show Brad we said to one of the primary reasons that Giants have been winning this year has been the improvement of the offensive line and just offensive line come together are you still feeling each other out we've come together that doesn't mean we're going to always be perfect I'm sure we're going to still have some more games where we're going to learn a lot hopefully it won't be at the expense of losing any longer I think that that basically with our super young line learning process that we have to go through but I think that we are capable of winning as we go through that and I think this year basically was a reflection of that Brad a few weeks ago the Giants had their destiny in their own hands now you're in a position we have to sit and let somebody else knock off a bonus to get you into their playoff so your reaction to tomorrow's game against the st. Louis and Washington in the question Monday night Miami in Dallas I think basically we've all been so surprised by this loss I really don't understand the total picture from a losing point of today and that's basically shows you where my thoughts were coming into today I'm sure somebody will be glad to tell me when I get into the locker room but really that playoff picture is pretty confusing I know what you have to wait to have other people beat the other foot so we can slip it its legs again congratulations to you thank you Brett alright thank you very much and again for the Giants to be in Washington must handle the Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins must beat the Dallas Cowboys still ahead of us we're gonna be taking a closer look at that Cardinal game Jimmy will still handicap Seattle against Denver and I will talk to the new med catcher Gary Carter and we will continue with the NFL today in just a moment Stallman of NFL 84 we may have a better handle on how things will turn out in the NFC coming up next Steve Largent with a mod Rashad as we catch our breath and NFL 84 continues
