welcome back to the wizard shop and the day has arrived to reveal the really cool car the really cool old car that i just purchased let's get started [Music] so there's a new car back there yeah behind there is a really yeah there's the bumper oh there is a piece of it there guys yeah it's back there i haven't seen it yet you're gonna really like it it's so cool so let's play a game of guessing and see if you can guess what's behind the blanket here okay so what's his top speed maybe 80 80 90 90. that takes out the countach and the diablo no i would never buy that you would probably kill me that's true the bank account probably appreciates that a little more too okay um how many people can it sit four a four seater maybe five you're that's not helping me out here and you said it was old i mean like old like you old or old like grandma old uh old like i feel today i feel 83 years old and this thing is 83 years old oh my gosh well you do look like you've had a little bit of a yeah i've had some moles from had some moles removed guys you see little band-aids and things and i've got my orthopedic shoes on i feel like i'm 83 today i feel pretty beat up good thing i still like you there buddy yeah that's a good thing you shall come home with me that's good um do you give up yet 83 year old car is it american made yes you guys got any ideas on this it's all about america this thing is totally america it totally is guys totally america no no peeking okay okay well maybe we should just show them what it is are you ready yeah let's go ahead okay well that's a 38 oldsmobile yes it is a 1938 ultimobile l-38 with the straight-eight wow it is truly the epitome of what you hear about a barn find it it came out of a barn it literally has been sitting for a long time there's a very cool story to this car it needs some work but it runs it drives and the interior is almost already been done let's take a look around this really cool car so yes this is a really old car and it screams america it totally is the part this is like bonnie and clyde gangster tommy gun type stuff this is really really cool and like i said it is 83 years old me and hoovy tyler of hooves garage were actually kind of bantering back and forth he found an old chrysler or something and then this one came up and he i told him about it and he looked into it a little bit more and he was like wizard you have to go buy this it's a straight eight car these are so rare they're worth a lot and i did some checking and as you can see in this picture here this one is rusted all out completely clapped out does not run and who knows what else is wrong with it for six or seven thousand dollars if you look at the picture of this one it's mostly restored these easily can approach 30 grand or more all right wait wait so how much did you pay for this one i paid 11 000 for this one okay aren't you happy mrs wizard immensely i can tell that you are it seems like a lot of money to pay for a car that's out of a barn with bird poop on it but that is truly what this is probably worth more than that especially when we take a look at the interior and start looking around this car but you don't pick up these cars for cheaper than that i mean ones that don't even have wheels sitting up on cinder blocks and go for three or four thousand dollars so i think i got a pretty good deal on this one this has a 110 horsepower straight eight and a three speed manual transmission now you guys know i don't really care for manual transmissions too much but in these years there really wasn't much of an option they did have some semi-automated manual transmissions and those are really even much harder to find but really in the 30s that's what you get is a manual transmission so one thing you'll see as we check this thing over today it will correlate with the story of the the family that sold this car there was an old guy that owned this car and he was in the process of bringing it back to this former glory that the way that it was when it was new he got the interior most of the way done he got some of the breaks done some other things done and then he passed away he wasn't able to finish the car unfortunately so it's set for a long time the family just didn't want it anymore they didn't really want to mess with it they weren't mechanics or whatever so they just decided it's time to get rid of the car and that's how it found its way here today this was found about two hours away from where we're at had crazy dee's family going pick it up for me they do a lot of towing for me and even when uh crazyd's dad drove it up on the uh the trailer he was like this is so cool he said when this thing is done i want to drive it can i drive it and i said yeah i suppose you can the paint on this thing you can tell it's probably the original paint it's just rough we'll definitely get it washed we'll take a look at it but i can tell some of the paint it looks like orange peel really bad it looks someone tried to paint it in the past i'm not sure what happened but it doesn't look as good as it should there's a lot of door handles and things and trim pieces that are apart because like i said the old guy was in the process of fixing this thing up and his progress was halted by passing away unfortunately we all reached that point at some point so let's go ahead and take a look around this car then we'll look in the interior we'll look under the gold wing hood which is really cool then we'll put it on the lift so you can see up front these are not stock those are after market i may keep those i may not i may do something that looks more along the lines of being period correct that doesn't look period correct to me as you can see down here on the bumper it has the number eight that signifies that this is the straight eight which is a more expensive option in these years they had an f-38 with the straight six and an l-38 with the straight eight this one is the straight eight it has the nice white wall tires and i think they're fairly new they're not very old maybe a few years old if they look alright i'll just use them they need to be cleaned up the one thing i like is it's not all rusted out through here it's not all rotten the side steps are in good shape there may be some brackets underneath that need to be replaced but they're not all rotten and gone if you look on the door here you can see what i mean by the orange peel i don't know if that's just like a base coat that someone put on to try to keep it from rusting or someone tried to repaint it it didn't turn out very good i don't think they did a very good job on that but wait wait wait carbs did you did mention that the door handles are missing but those holes those aren't in the normal spot well yeah this is suicide doors this one opens this way and that one opens that way wow the old 1930s gangsters suicide doors on it it's a really cool car as we go along and look towards the back you can see again it's not caved in it's not dented in it's not rotted or rusted out that's a little floppy maybe there's a bracket that goes there or something but it's not rusted i think the back end looks really cool mrs wizards it looks like a face like an old man kind of like me an old man well i mean we could go back to the star wars it looks a little bit like darth vader yeah we'll go ahead and open the your hats you can see all the parts the old man had put in here before he passed there's all kinds of panels and parts and trim pieces and who knows what i'm going to have to go through all of that there's also a spare tire look at these really cool tail lights they're off the side like little wings pretty neat there's our fuel filler down there just kind of sticks up out of there that's stock i know that's the way those are there again the fender's not all beat up rusted out the glass is all intact and none of it is cracked that is really worth a lot on this car this side step is solid its brackets must be in place very well the rubber still there i'm really happy about that too the rubber coating on it or the layer and it looks like there was somebody had put an antenna or something there i guess i'm not sure what happened there someone probably was going to put an antenna i don't know i don't know what happened to that the roof is not dented and beat up and rusted it's also very nice and this fender is very nice they don't make them like this anymore mrs wizard no they don't really iconic american car let's take a look at the interior you guys are going to freak out so the dash on this was about halfway done it has an aftermarket heater and it'll be easy to add aftermarket ac the guy didn't make it so far as to get the dash completely done in the gauges that kind of that was a stopping point for the interior but if you look at the headliner and the seats the carpets all brand new that right there is worth at least two or three or maybe even four thousand dollars if you were to pay an upholsterer to do all this it's not going to happen for 300 bucks this is very expensive work these seats are comfortable aren't they mrs wizard no they really are there's the wipers or i don't know if those are vacuum wipers or what they are on these ears as you can see inside of there there is aftermarket heater with a blower and you can also see that the entire floor has been coated in that dynamat that silver layer of soundproofing that's back there i have checked under the carpet and it's all over the place so this has been done well it's been done right really really pleased to see that very happy just don't put anything in your glove box yeah the glove box is apart it's probably sitting in the trunk let's try this out wow there's the temperature it's got an actuator on it oh sweet guys watch right here i'm going to turn the temperature you can see it actually actuate it's almost like a modern car wow that's cool that is so cool and it has defrost you switch between defrost and floor wow that is pretty cool so before we put it up on the lift i wanted you guys to see the rear part of the interior is also just as nice and the really cool suicide doors look at that guys the carpets are nice and new the seats are very well done it all looks really really nice i can't complain at all i totally think it's worth what we what we paid for it so as we get this thing lifted up we're going to look underneath the car i fully expect to see lots of leaks and who knows it's a big surprise it's my first time seeing it it's you guys first time seeing it so let's get this thing up in the air and take a look what we got i wonder when the last thing this thing has been in the shop or been on a lift or maybe decade probably decades wow let's take a look at this thing so here's our here's our radiator it's nice and dry i see some kind of wiring that's been all those probably are some turn signal bulbs or something that was up there i will be going through and redoing any of this wiring that doesn't look very good so these have a suspension called a kingpin you can see it right here there's a solid pin that goes through here and the wheel pivots on that there's no ball joints so to speak so let's see if that's loose no but it seems like the wheel bearings might be a little loose i have to go through and pack those this arm right here is a control arm but it's also a shock absorber you can see right here this unit is filled with oil and it dampens any kind of movement it's very simple control arms just bars basically as a sway bar in 1938 that's pretty cool check over here if anything's loose amazingly the kingpin is good not very much playing the steering either wow that's amazing here's our big straight eight look at that thing it's just like four feet long mrs wizard wow it's just huge it's a little shiny though yeah it's got an oily going on here it looks like it's coming from over here you can see up through here there's the the tap it access there's like a plate on the side of the engine that you can get to the the lifters i guess you call it the tappets that cork gaskets leaking it looks like this washer here is leaking oil a little bit i'll take that any day of the week that's not too bad our little baby transmission a little three speed the gm i think it's called a light duty three speed there's a little slimy yes probably there's a little pan up top it's like sheet metal the gasket's probably bad it's leaking down the side and here's our speedometer check this u-joint this is pretty neat even back in 1938 that it has an open drive shaft that has u-joints so many of the cars of these years have a torque tube it's a solid tube all the way back kind of like that maserati we looked at the other day wow the floors look nice this is like off of a 1970s 80s truck nice i mean it's it's really nice well you know what i see some batteries it has less rust than that yeah it does you joints are good uh oh i do see some rust in the trunk right there we'll have to cut that and patch that but that's that's it so many of these the whole trunk is gone that's just a small hole i'll get that repaired i'll fix it and take care of that it's got quite a bit of play in the differential but we'll take a look and see what we can do with that got leaf springs in the back we've got sway bars even in the back pretty cool our single exhaust it looks fairly new probably in the last 10 or 20 years has been replaced i'll probably just leave that alone it sounds good nothing loose there nothing loose there it's got covers over the leaf springs to keep debris out that's pretty neat here's our gas tank being held on with straps i don't like that we'll have to make that right and it looks like it's leaking yeah i'll probably just get a new gas tank if i can get one in fact i don't think that's the original gas tank that's supposed to go to this car it looks like they comp job the gas tank the gas tank looks too small as well it looks really little i don't know what that gas tank came from but it's going to be coming off and being replaced i fully expected i'd have to go through and do some things on this car so it looks like the trunk needs to be replaced we need to figure out this gas tank situation this is a very strange way to do the leaf springs it's just a little shackle a u-shaped shackle these tires look nice for use on cars manufactured prior to 1948. well it definitely is that probably bias ply tires i don't see a date code on it so i don't see any cracks in them i'm going to use the tires unless they're way out of round which they don't look out around i'll probably just use them we need to get the trunk fix the gas tank fixed finish up the interior go through the brakes there are some things that need to be done for this but luckily i don't the interior is a big thing for me that would take a lot of time and money to do and it's already been done i can weld in a new trunk floor and fix the rest it's not going to be that big of a deal so really really excited about this car let's get it on the ground so now we got this thing on the ground let's take a look at this really cool straight eight doesn't look like they have any uh hootstrikes no they didn't have hood struts back then i imagine it probably had a hood prop but maybe it's missing or something maybe just lays over but it's been converted to 12 volts i think the old guy started doing that that's probably why the gauges aren't hooked up i will be adding a resistor so to make the original gauges work again the thing runs like a top i'll go ahead and start it for you guys here in a minute but it's been i can tell by these two wires down here and it's soft silicone that it probably has a protronics ignition in it it's already been converted to electronic ignition so here's our distributor with the steel vacuum line that goes for the vacuum advance this is a flat head as you can see that the spark plugs go directly into the head there's no valves up up here they're all down in the block there's an alternator there's our water pump fan radiator and there's the carburetor it's a carter looks like someone duct taped the lid on we'll have to fix that i'll get it and start it up real quick for you guys it runs guys it runs very very well amazing very pleased about that it's not locked up it's not damaged it runs perfectly fine i'll go turn it off so there it is guys in all its glory it runs it drives it does need some work i'm kind of disappointed about the trunk being rotted out but get it replaced get it fixed and get it right luckily i don't have to just pull this whole thing apart and as you're seeing the interior is really really nice it's been converted to 12 volts the engine runs really good i'm very pleased with it for what i got like i showed you in the picture for six or seven thousand dollars you basically get a piece of crap this one is ready to be fixed to the next level ready to be brought to the next level so if you're curious what kind of tools you're going to use to work on this check my amazon
