attack that score set up on the big hit from luke anthony to his wide receiver griffin a bear yeah look at a bear in the slot he's really come on this year he is going to do a little fade route from the slot man coverage great job by luke anthony navigating the safety and it's right there safety makes a good play on the ball but what beats great coverage is a better ball in hindsight you wish a bear could have stayed up maybe got an end zone that's being nitpicky great start by luke anthony early in this ball game credit to that uab defense for holding firm as well and not letting louisiana tech score td marshall is one of the return men deep for uab jacob barnes is the field kicker in the punter but he is not the kickoff specialist that would be number 53 gabe and that one is short picked up at the 25-yard line big collision at the 35 and good starting field position for uab not sure what that was all about look they just missed the ball well i hope you missed it i hope they weren't actually trying to do it's it's rare that a swim works out bryson lucero coming off his first loss as a starting quarterback since middle school he was 4-0 at img academy played behind a couple of uh greats calaman shea patterson had a 3-0 start here at uab as the starter after replacing tyler johnston the third but a heartbreaking loss last week at home to louisiana in his last three games he's thrown six interceptions and as you mentioned johnston is available today so he could play if the cerro gets hurt or struggles in this game and right there we are seeing spencer brown number four if you're a uab fan you know all about spencer brown if you're tuning in for the first time he is uab's all-time leading rusher an absolute stud they're gonna give him a full dose of carries today special player and it all starts with number four in the backfield averaging 100 yards a game this season will hand it to him on second down and he gets wrecked up by milton williams that to me right there is a key in this game milton williams is their only returning starter from a year ago they have to be great on the defensive line especially interior-wise against this very experienced offensive line for uab and a hard-nosed rushing attack from spencer brown and company and they have great linebackers unfortunately today without one of them ezekiel barnett just told that it's health reasons [Applause] third down and six for uab on their opening drive after a louisiana tech field goal to start this game trips bunch to the near side lucero looking this way and it's complete it's a first down in the louisiana tech territory at the 44-yard line and there is austin watkins jr that is our guy we called it before the game austin watkins i love what he's able to do third and seventh third and medium we should be looking at watkins the whole game he's physical enough to big boy any smaller receivers but fast enough to run with the best of them as well only two catches last week now they want to get him the ball a lot more today quickly again to the near side and another catch minimal yardage but a pickup of four on first down and all that is austin uh big department myron mitchell number five we're gonna see a lot of five and six if uab is gonna be successful on offense the two uh great wide receivers that they have but it combined three touches last week in the passing game already got two we talked to bill clark this week and he kind of shook his head saying yeah i know i got to get the ball to our special playmakers doing that early on [Applause] he's near the 35-yard line to be about a yard and a half two yards shy of a first down [Applause] is the nation's second active leading rusher behind clemson's travis atm right there they they look to sub brown out of the game i think they realized it was third down wait a sec we need our workhorse back there they bring spencer brown back onto the field if they're doing that i would expect a run here left-hand side and there you go mr romo one to the left i guess louisiana tech may have known it was coming as well because they stuff him short of the first down a pickup of one but decision time now on fourth and one fourth and one looks like there's pushing from shoving down there i go for it if your bread and butter's this run game you got spencer brown we're loving them up here in the booth let's give him the rock [Applause] i thought he got that at first glance from up here but obviously not we've talked about it this is spencer brown territory right here lean on that great running back an offensive line maybe get him to come offside they don't come offside they do get the first down and thanks to bryson lucero the quarterback how about that your quarterback out there shoving him like the bush push which is legal now for a first down there we go the bush push oh yeah good enough he needed that max he did momentum stopped and we live in this era now where a lot of offenses using multiple running backs two or three systems this uab team they're going to see different backs but they are going to give spencer brown 20 25 30 carries in this ball game [Applause] at 600 rushing yards coming into this game fifth in the nation and he's seen a handful of carries already that one's tossed out to jermaine brown jr no relation to spencer brown a shiftier back and it's a good pick up on first down of about five or six yards yeah the other brown jermaine brown very dynamic a one cut guy they like sprinkle them in there for the pass game kind of a different flavor offensively so far right on cue getting watkins involved getting the run game going now it's time to get lucero going as well ninth play of this drive for uab [Applause] [Music] [Applause] can [Applause] austin watkins running down and right here lucero is going to roll out when you do a flood concept it's an outside in reed the comeback he had open on the slide on on the outside excuse me his eyes get a little greedy that gets drawn back trying to find his playmaker poor read by lucero had a man open on the outside louisiana tech makes him pay and so close to the 13th pick six since 2017 louisiana tech already leads the country with a dozen of them since the start of the 2017 season they had won last week against utsa and now trying to turn this into an offensive touchdown and a two possession lead midway through the first quarter and it's a toss it's a catch it's a touchdown no it's incomplete did not hold on to it all the way through the catch adrian hardy thinks he had it [Applause] everyone in the building or maybe just me thought it was a touchdown anytime you get close to this pylon the fumble gets a little scary if it goes out hope he had that i don't know that might be a good call i'm not sure if he ever had full possession it was always kind of moving the previous complete pass is under review so rodney burnett and our officiating crew going to take another look at this and again the call in the field is incomplete do we see indisputable evidence i think the ball is always moving he puts his hand on it there but it's still not secure i like that cradle at the end but your your key word indisputable that might be the trump card here [Applause] and the official right there the head linesman lee bailey was two feet away and i give him credit he did not signal touchdown he waited to see if he came down with the football intact and when he saw it was still loose the ruling is incomplete so our conference usa crew will look at this i just i don't see any way that you overturn it and even if you do overturn it what would you over turn it to a touchdown or a fumble through the end zone [Applause] i like the call for touchdown if it is a catch because it does look like the knee hits the pylon before the ball comes out that final time right when his left hand catches the ball right there when we freeze it i like control and a touchdown right there i like that after review the ruling on the field is confirmed incomplete pass yeah i don't think it was indisputable i think if they originally max would have ruled that a touchdown that that you probably hold firm because it you're right it did look like in our producer andy kind of thought the same thing you did that the knee hit the pylon the ball was was was being cradled there in possession for a second you know the moment he hit the pylon but not enough for this i should have listened to you well i'm usually wrong so it'll be second in goal now from the three-yard line after the incomplete pass and anthony's got the big back next to him justin henderson as hardy goes in motion and he's looking hardy's way fade and he had no chance good coverage by bronte harris i wonder if skip holtz thought he was going to get manned there they got man coverage on first down defender ran with him that time they traded it off good coverage and this would be a huge stop if uab can force a field goal here after the interception run back to the three-yard line if they can get louisiana to louisiana tech to kick the field goal twice inside the ten those would be two big wins hardy again in motion again anderson the handoff trying to power his way to the goal line but he is turned back at the one and a half could he use that lucero push yes he could and now another decision here in this football game it's fourth and goal from about the two yard line early on momentum on your side you're not confident in your offensive line i would kick it skip holt says stand by uab take a couple of looks at it before we head to break in those shadows in the back of the end zone that close from a one-handed grab opportunity off a big pick they do not score they turn it over at the two yard line let's go back to the pick max yeah watch uh watkins in the slot he's gonna be open they're gonna work this over route from the tight end prince and if we play it here they're gonna play action roll out right from lacero and watch watkins out there on these on the sideline it's an outside in progression for exactly that reason take what take what the defense gives you watkins was there take the easy five-yard completion and he runs him down though that's the type of guy he is effort and workforce for uab not available stuffed at the two-yard line they went forward on fourth down and an incomplete pass in the back of the end zone that was intended for carson rider and if you're a quarterback in this situation just get yourself two first downs when you're backed up get those 20 yards get back into field position that's your mindset right here if you're lucero and up once again and brown busts out of a big hit and picks up a first down across the 18-yard line there he is watch that power run getting those knees driving rolls it back a little bit finds the crease runs over a defender and that's what's going to take louisiana tech three defenders on that play it took to to get spencer brown down he's just getting rolling right now now this season you see the rushing numbers he's number five in the country came in with 600 yards and he's got seven carries for 28 yards so far he's the workhorse and they go right back to him eighth carry already in this game that one good for four or five and he's one of a trio of fantastic running backs in this conference brendan knox the reigning mvp in conference for undefeated marshall sincere mccormick now with 921 rushing yards he leads at fbs but fau did a great job on he and the utsa road runner offense today looked at the big win in boca raton [Music] second down and five another handoff to brown tackle hit in the backfield by trey baldwin the reigning co-defensive player of the week had 18 tackles last week at utsa an alamodome record he is a tone setter it does not surprise me that he can single-handedly take crown down great tackle right there in space they're gonna need a big game from him tonight under four minutes to play here in the first uab's second drive of the game the first one ended in an interception the seventh in the last three plus games for bryce and lucero third and six this crowd of about seven thousand making some noise and lucero throws wide of the mark it was intended for hayden pittman his tight end and uab is going to have to pump it away he just missed him they had the leverage they had the middle linebacker tucked inside the box right place to go with the ball just got to paint it on him and that's where you see maybe that early interception getting in his head not as comfortable we've seen how comfortable luke anthony is now lucero's gonna get on that same page [Applause] smoke harris deep to try to return this punk from about at the open aaron allen getting a look here in the first quarter and a handoff to israel tucker first down yardage out to the 48-yard line having been myself uh in a rotating quarterback situation before interesting time that they're doing it right because luke anthony's rolling but they must have promised alan that on a specific drive he was going to get put in there interesting move i'm nervous about the timing but so far so good anthony had a chance to put a couple balls into the end zone twice inside the 10 unable to do it but now they're going to the ground game and israel tucker more first down yardage pickup of 12. this is one of the worst rushing teams in the country averaging just 99 yards a game tucker was the backup running back behind justin henderson for the entire season until last week and they like tucker great job in the last play by donovan campbell the left tackle stealing the deal [Music] back-to-back first down runs and aaron allen looks to the sideline uab fans remember him from last season played that game down in birmingham played pretty well probably his best game as a starting quarterback for louisiana tech couple of touchdowns in that close game uab able to pull it out and allen to the air down the sideline and incomplete over the head of adrian hardy double coverage and a penalty marker down near the line of scrimmage two minutes left in the first quarter but i absolutely love the game skip holtz is calling this thus far everything plays off each other we saw it in the red zone a lot of those motions making this uab defense think this drive so far an eligible player down field offense number 65 five yard penalty remains first down that's cody rusty the center of the preseason all-conference usa selection who is downfield it's a five-yard penalty they love rusty on this team this offensive line only has about 50 some odd starts as a unit rusty accounts for about 40 of those coach holtz toss we've talked about this week that they could put more on his plate it's a young offensive line and offensive lineman's had trouble protecting the quarterback they've given up the most sacks in conference usa play and that one batted down and incomplete a couple of white shirts coming through allen was trying to set up the screen but jerry and street [Applause] was having none of that i believe seven is tyler taylor may have switched his number yep taylor right there great job by the entire unit sniffing it out you can see the white jerseys right there they were all over that you can see the speed and activity of this uh uav defense coming to live here you're right tyler taylor used to be number 23. pulls the old switcheroo on the number seven this week second down and 15. [Music] more pressure off the edge allen stands in and throws it behind his receiver that's smoke harris that's their slot specialist without the last two weeks he's very dynamic the biggest biggest thing with him is just getting the ball in his hands right there you can see they're trying to do a little in interior slant route had the leverage just missed him and now in trouble third and 15 behind the sticks if you could pick up 10 or so maybe you go for it on fourth down [Applause] bunch to the near side allen rolling that way it's caught complete and it's first down yardage inside the 30-yard line to wayne tucson we're getting a lot of tucson early on in this game nice little 15 yard out right by him and once again i love the call when you call a flood route it allows it's an easy throw it's an easy read use it just a high low you're high low in one defender and if things break down you allow alan to use his feet and also throw the ball away if it's not there yeah i was thinking he was running out of time a lot of times you just see a quarterback throw it away not allen there found tucson for 16 yards and on first down back to the air screen pass wide side to sawn once again to the 25-yard line pick up before find yourself some completions aaron allen great job getting the ball out of his hands they bring the outside linebacker on that side spits it out to tucson and anytime you're getting completions you're staying on schedule second and six here good job by on so far skip holtz was they had a little bounce in his step this week he said that they are as healthy as they've been all season he was excited to see what a healthy team could do against uab here at home now they're not as healthy as he would like them to be as we told you about they're missing isaiah graham a senior wide receiver and one of their great starting linebackers ezekiel barnett both out for health reasons today late scratches third down here in five i trust your quarterback i trust allen so far so good give me your best quick game concept right here the concept he's most comfortable with shotgun formation once again and it's a quarterback draw uab not fooled kelly sanders rips him down loss on the play and it will be a long field gold attempt great job by sanders that's a scouting report play right there you know they empty the backfield aaron allen is a mobile quarterback trying to get the qb draw activated there great job by the front seven for uab that's the end of the first quarter the last play of the quarter before a 46-yard field goal attempt will start the second skip holtz and the underdog bulldogs with a three-nothing lead themselves right now probably should be at least 10 nothing at this point look at the first quarter stats all louisiana tech uab had that turnover which was nearly a pick six a run down inside the five yard line and then they turn louisiana tech over on downs here we go barnes is seven for seven this year made one in the first quarter tries to make this one to start the second and it is his first miss of the season and max brown walk tech fans are not fans of me right now with the old kicker jinx welcome to the ball game you've got the announcer jinx under your wing first of many and louisiana tech that's three trips inside the 30 in just three points to show for it and that is uh bad news when you're facing a team as good as uab with a winning caliber team that just does not lose in conference usa play uab 17-2 against divisional opponents since the start of the 2017 season including 3-0 against louisiana tech viscero down and a flag flies as that one is complete trey shropshire but we'll have to check the marker which came from behind the line of scrimmage holding offense number 62 ten-yard penalty remains first down they get sydney wells for holding so wipe out what would have been a gain of 12. and shropshire holding that right hand me he's kind of their third receiver strop shire emerged this year but holding by wells an all-conference player they really like their offensive line but when you're trying to get lucero in in rhythm to start with first and 20. not ideal and that's been one of the few areas that uab needs to improve on in the intangibles category you are one of the most penalized teams in conference usa in the country averaging nine penalties for nearly 90 yards a game screen pass and that's raj johnson sanders making his first round of the season and right there a throw just to get lucero in rhythm a little bit right here second down trying to get half back right here that's your mindset if you're this offense try to get to third and manageable bryson lucero slow start had that interception in the first quarter told you that tyler johnston iii is available back at practice this week for the first time in six weeks and another penalty and that's going to go faster offense number 53 five yard penalty remains second down it's colby raglan who's playing left tackle kadeem telfort is normally over there at left tackle but he's kind of been banged up so we're not sure how much if at all we're going to see him in this game and raglan was an all-conference player as well last year played left tackle for uab a year ago moves inside because they got telford and looking ahead to the nfl raglan likes his prospects at guard but he's comfortable at left tackle he's got to eliminate those penalties picks up a big chunk of that yardage to set up a third and manageable back to the original line of scrimmage austin watkins jr with another grab three catches now in this first half taking what the defense gives him we talked about it get it to third and manageable even though third and ten is tough you at least give yourself a shot five for seven thirty nine yards and that interception we haven't seen myron mitchell yet that's a name we haven't seen he's in the bottom of your screen looks he's got single coverage over the head of the intended receiver some whistles after the throw but i don't see a penalty marker down it's fourth and ten and the punt unit is out again this louisiana tech defense doing a job early on and great coverage right there by zach hannibal he's the veteran of this group been with the program for a very long time he's played in 41 games in his career never really gotten to his starting role until this year great coverage there on the outside and uab putting to this latex offense once again smoke hair is deep setting up the return but that kick high spiral really good fair catch at the 24 yard line and let's take a look at how things look the rest of the way for both of these teams uab 2-0 in conference play they're the only team in the west without a loss everybody else has at least one including the louisiana tech at two and two but when you look at louisiana tech's remaining scheduled i mean you could make the argument that they'll be favored in every game the rest of the way ulm is not a conference game but if they can win this they're only a game back and they would have the tiebreaker they would have a legitimate chance yeah it's an advantageous schedule for both teams uab gets the by next week you can kind of gear up for the remainder of the schedule and chris we blink and this season's almost uh on on the home stretch like you said la tech this is kind of the game then the rest of the way have to win them obviously but it gets easier at least aaron allen getting another series here for the louisiana tech israel tucker shifty move that's why they elevated him from second string to starter a couple of weeks ago [Applause] and watch israel tucker right here cuts it back makes a guy miss in the hole and that's his job you get one-on-one win those match-ups kicking it outside right there to cj powell he's their slot guy we've talked about smoke harris well there's powell and he has a little something to say on the sideline uab wanted a penalty marker for taunting he kind of i think he spun the football in front of one of those uav players he's feeling himself in that new number zero the quad quad set i don't know if i've ever seen that formation on the bottom stagger again they throw the screen again zoo powell and he's into uab territory inside the 45 it's a pickup of nine and he'll spin that football again and then pick it up they must have told him if you do that again we're gonna throw the flag he did it and then he immediately said oh no i shouldn't have done it and it was too late after the play unsportsmanlike conduct office number zero [Applause] that's number zero's first unsportsmanlike conduct out of the game 15-yard penalty second down watch him reach for it he knows it right away he must have been told on that play before if you do it one more time we're gonna flag you what do you think does that warrant an unsportsman like max that's so tough because you can tell it's just something he naturally does it's just habitual it's not even taunting i don't like it but i understand what they're doing because if they allow that then what's next but man those are the penalties you just cannot have if you're lotec so instead of second and one in uab territory it's second and 16. and no gain on this play as they go back to tucker who is hit immediately and right away it's very interesting aaron ellen getting another series i wonder if something's up because luke anthony playing well early you liked his mojo that the fact they're going without we knew he allen was going to play but the timing feels a little interesting to me wonder if something's up well skip holtz was telling us this week that he kind of regretted going with aaron allen for that last drive against utsa because they were so backed up but that was the first time he had gotten him in that game and so he was thinking this week we're gonna put him in at least by the second quarter and they get him into the first and now playing into the second that wouldn't have been good enough for a first down anyway and the drive gets stomped out because of that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty coverage right there by bronte harris program raves about this guy great dude been on the team since 2016 a uav team that takes a lot of juco products he's battled through injuries had it had an acl i believe but finally getting the starting campaign in his senior year great coverage there from the 510 senior barnes boots it deep to myron mitchell fair catch inside the 20-yard line with 10 51 to go here in the second quarter louisiana tech has pretty much dominated but they're only up three ruston three-nothing louisiana tank but max it could be a lot more yeah and i said i wonder why they're they're going away from luke i think some of these throws not the most accurate of throws we were seeing two missed red zone opportunities and a longer field goal but jacob barnes first missed field goal of the year they're going to be kicking themselves they're dominating this football game but only up 3-0 gosh coach hasta has to want more at this point in this game and the big blow was going forward on fourth down at the two-yard line and not getting anything so uab's got it only down three and a good run on first down on this first play of the drive this uab offense trying to get going spencer brown with his tenth carry of the game he's over 40 yards and the first three possessions the first one they had something cooking until the interception but the last two they've been unable to get anything going and they go right back to brown there that that's the staple of their offense the past couple weeks not doing a whole lot in terms of scheme-wise leaning heavily on brown [Music] and again to the ground game and brown who powers his way across the 30 pickup of three and right there once again seeing milton williams in the middle leading that lot tech defensive line really a group effort though i like the way they're swarming around the field [Applause] a younger bunch getting a lot of experience early so far so good saros had a tough start five for eight 39 yards and an interception and you wonder if he's thinking boy if i throw another one i might get benched throws a good one this time it's first down and more to midfield as he once again goes to austin watkins his fourth catch of the first half watch this route by watkins just a simple curl but if they're gonna play off and be scared oh excuse me a little in-route five-yard end route but man he's tough to tackle that's the physicality he brings to the table you give him one-on-one with the corner his stiff arm stuffs him in the dirt picks up an extra five we're seeing a full showcase of austin watkins today [Applause] they mark him at the 49-yard line first and ten for the blazers and a handoff right side brown trying to get the edge and he's near another first down [Applause] round number two among active rushers behind only travis etienne 3700 rushing yards for spencer brown senior from kimberly louisiana revamped his body in the off season he was at 240 last year down under 220 now so that's given him the ability to not only stay fresher but break longer runs 14 karat 12 carries already for 54 yards four and a half a clip play fake lacero going deep has a man overshoots him off the fingertips of myron mitchell there is a flag down in the secondary where mitchell got behind a couple of bulldog may defenders [Applause] holding right here in the secondary as past interference defense number four 15-yard penalty automatic first down that's on bj williamson who had that interception in the first quarter yeah they put mitchell in the slot he's going to run a nice post corner route gets bj williamson mixed up with his hips and at that point only you can do is tug the jersey mitchell was open looking a great ball from lucero right through the hands it looked like here we are most it was oh boy you're right maybe a little alligator arm at first and then right through the palms it's a big time throw it would have been big for his confidence as well no question they do get the first down on the pass interference penalty at the 27 yard line of louisiana tech another handoff this time the louisiana tech defensive line able to stuff dwayne mcbride which is not something anybody's been able to do this season mcbride averaging 10 yards of carry the true freshman he's been so good and as we cr as we're in the red zone this is one of the keys to the game for me uab has been absolutely stellar in the red zone converting points and especially touchdowns if loftec can be ben but don't break defense it'll go a long way in this ball game now mcbride the running back is in the slot now coming back to the backfield to the right of lucero gets the handoff running left always tough to bring down always moving that pile forward here we go third and five playbooks open gonna have to probably lean on your quarterback here it's a similar rescue of both these offenses trying to protect your quarterback but also give him the answers and enough schemes for him to be successful with it being only three to zero do you hand the ball off take your chances that way trust your kicker where do you play the the quick pass game matt quinn's been pretty good he's made his last five six for seven kicking field goals this season lucero throws it away again it's williamson who later rolls it down [Applause] touchdown louisiana that is being a teammate [Applause] what a play he gives him the lateral that play is going to go on every team around the country's monday morning meeting in terms of heads up football right there and there you have it a baker's dozen we almost had one in the first quarter from b.j williams and he said you know what i almost got in last time let me give it up to ladler the transfer from virginia tech takes it all the way home what a heads he play that was bang bang too [Applause] well it is a school of pick six 13 now as you take a look at the flip heads up and lagler does the rest louisiana tech smelling up a logo can do more than identify your company it can connect in meaningful ways energize your team and inspire your customers we're for imprint and we know your logo on the right product can create moments that matter with 30 years pick six since 2017 leads the nation by far max show us how they did it yeah they're going to try to get the ball to trey shopshire on the bottom of your screen they're going to high low this corner on the bottom of the screen with a five yard end route and an inside fade from the slot shropshire doesn't run the great route he kind of lays off of it a little bit but moral of the story this ball should not be thrown both those guys are covered i want lucero to step up in the pocket and try to find his checkdown it's great coverage by this latex defense a headsy play and it's 10-0 bulldogs that's two interceptions now for lucero and now with tyler johnston available you wonder if bill clark is thinking about making a switch at quarterback that's eight interceptions now in the last three and a half games for bryce and lucero uab will start at the 25-yard line after the touchback and lucero still has the hat on we'll see if he puts the helmet on or if we are going to see tyler johnston for this drive seven minutes to go in the first half 10-0 louisiana tech in my experience the hat is not a good sign it is tyler johnston iii making his first appearance since the second game of the season against miami was out for six or seven weeks with a non-throwing shoulder injury didn't need surgery but needed it to heal he was the starting quarterback for most of last season mcbride the handoff first down and more mcbride down the sideline 75-yard touchdown [Applause] mcbride the youngster they love this guy came onto campus not too long ago and they're saying hey flash forward a few years this guy might be as good or i hate to say potentially even better than brown that reminds them a lot of a young spencer brown very athletic runs through guys and we're seeing the top end speed there from 22. and he can take it the distance too we saw him firsthand a few weeks ago in birmingham against western kentucky on a third and one broke attack that the line of scrimmage took it 60-plus yards for the score but that one his longest 75 yards and uab is on the board mcbride the true freshman came into the game averaging 10 yards to carry well that average is going up as mcbroth oh he's got a ton of action in the first half of this game it's 10-7 louisiana tech bryce and lucero has been benched after a couple of picks by bj williamson and that lateral to khalil ladler who took it into the house for a touchdown so he gets benched tyler johnston comes in one play turns and hands to his running back who takes it 75 yards for the score and you better believe those arrows on the sidelines saying man i couldn't have got that when i was in there just a little bump to the confidence bump to the offensive schemes uh production but uh lucero i respect him he was being supportive at the end of that possession but you know he wants to play but here we are tyler johnson that the veteran gets his opportunity and his offense helps him out with a little spark play right there dwayne mcbride 75-yard touchdown run [Applause] and it's 10-7 and from four yards deep in the end zone wayne tucson not near the 25. mark him at the 24. interested to see who we get at quarterback right here looks like luke anthony and we are going to get a flag as well recipient team number nine penalties have to destroy the goal so louisiana tech's going to be backed up and they've gone they started with luke anthony a couple of drives inside the 10-yard line that did not result in touchdowns they went to aaron allen and it's kind of been a two quarterback show all season long and it does indeed look like they're going back to anthony on this drive but max they have to start at the seven yard line yeah and it gets back to what i said earlier just get yourself two first downs when you're backed up but you still got to play ball the quick passing game had success early for anthony i still think it's foot on the gas let's play ball it's trust in number nine give them some answers i like that they're staying in ten personnel with four receivers and one running back three receivers to the wide side of the field play fake anthony down the sideline over the head of adrian hardy [Applause] looked like double coverage that way a little bit thinking his eyes may have may have been towards the bottom of the screen towards the field first down pat pass though excuse me you know skip hold thinking the same thing you got to trust your quarterback got to get him in rhythm but right here in second and ten they like this bunch formation on the bottom of the screen with in breaking routes this time play fake and they've got smoke harris in the open field that's always a key for louisiana tech find him some space even just a sliver and he'll get you a first down number five is electric he's named smoke for a reason her nickname smoke for a reason got that name in youth football because of his speed and quickness we're seeing it right there a slot specialist you're going to see a lot of bubble screens out of them little hitches just get the ball in his hands and we saw him make one guy miss and get get ahead for a big game 14-yard pickup first and 10 at the 21-yard line anthony again going deep single coverage incomplete batted away by kell sanders but there's a flag down that's juwan johnson the wide receiver two flags in fact past interference defense number zero the automatic first down he's playing coach talked about it this week utsa a week ago really put an extra safety in the box they weren't able to really do anything with that offensively this week they have answers they're attacking down the field that's something they haven't done all year long is the vertical passing game we're seeing a steady dose of that today skipper's telling us that all season long when he calls in on the tackle you're not kidding chris he literally said i turn around close my eyes i'm not i'm not looking at that getting a little more confidence in his offensive line and quarterback today [Applause] second and 13 after the loss of three 5 20 to go here in the first half louisiana tech has led the whole way and that one he was hoping for his receiver to break down field but tucson [Applause] did not and it went over his head incomplete trying to hit that whole shot in the short side of the field but i love what louisiana tech's doing this week they're staying in a lot of ten personnel like i talked about which is four receivers and one running back no tight end no fullback and to me that's the strength of this offense last week we saw a lot of jacob adams their fullback but to me with their offensive line struggling a little bit spread them out use this the depth and receiver that lattek has to your advantage [Applause] now johnson the wide receiver leaves the back field and sets up in the bunch to the far side they'll go his way it's complete dragging a tackler to the 45-yard line just a yard short of the first down [Applause] yard short i like it we know skip holds he's not afraid to go for it on fourth down lottek has one of the best conversion rates on fourth down we already saw him go for it in their own red zone or up up against the the opposing red zone ah he doesn't go for it they're gonna punt it instead yeah they were nine for ten coming into the game they could not convert on fourth and goal from the two earlier on in this game and they'll to try to get a free five yards give themselves room to breathe got to be more disciplined up front if your lot tech so give them some room out to the seven yard line johnston hands it off more running room this time it's brown bulls over a tackler 40 45. flag down at the 21-yard line powerful run by spencer brown but it might be coming [Applause] back [Applause] personal foul hands to the face offense 15 penalties half the distance to the goal first down they give that yardage right back but check out that run spencer brown we've talked about how much of a workhorse he is but his madden truck stick rating is a good old 99 at that point he's looking for contact lowers the left shoulder makes a db pay and that's what he brings to the table we've talked all year long about how he's lost weight and 25 pounds but don't don't don't get him mixed up he'll still run you over and that was khalil ladler who got trucked and paid the price for uh running that uh lateral in for a touchdown earlier in the half spencer brown zeroed in on him [Applause] tyler johnson two run plays two big time uh yards so far he hasn't thrown it yet in his second possession now after the benching of bryce and lucero go back to the previous penalty for the hands to the face let's look at andrew smith right here a lot of experience at center getting their eye that's so tough he's trying to lock up on his on his on his chest plate but his hand slides up towards the face mask that's one of those one of those plays where just kind of the nature of playing into your offensive line tough call right there you give him the penalty yards right back [Applause] stanley into louisiana tech territory we do have an injured blazer back at the line of scrimmage it's an offensive lineman stanley his first carry of the game just his 12th carry of the season but these offensive linemen are opening up huge holes we're getting a look inside of this stable of backs at uab lucia stanley makes a big tom cut gets to the second and third level bj williamson tracks him down but this is what you got to worry about if your lot tech is just getting worn down as the game progresses with this experienced offensive line from uab and the amount of running backs that uab can roll out roll out at you yeah that's the first carry for stanley 46-yard pickup mcbride three carries 80 yards and spencer brown who's out there right now 14 carries 74 yards they're already at 200 yards rushing in this first half johnston to pass for the first time it's complete to the 10-yard line that's austin watkins jr once more fifth catch of the half and he and he's eaten you can see him give the hand motion to his staff give me the rock i'm eating watch that great eyes right there and he drifts it over a bang bang play right there but when you got a physical receiver like watkins you gotta love when he comes across the middle and give gives six the rock [Applause] now eighth all time at uab spencer brown the handoff and he's good for a couple you give him three down to the six yard line [Applause] with that last throw from johnson you wonder about just sheer practice time he hasn't had that many reps from being in the injury but being off off on an injury how does he adjust some of these schemes and concepts gets the ball out on time that last throw great sign for uab [Music] got spencer brown behind him again turns and hands and brown is oh he lost the ball at the goal line but they'll call it a touchdown [Applause] we'll take a look but the ruling on the field is a touchdown for spencer brown it would be his ninth of the season [Applause] [Music] spencer brown is wearing this defense out as the game goes on he's punishing defenders we'll take a look at it right here once again that truck stick two defenders three defenders looks like he crosses the plane i think he was over yeah i think he was too the the arms stretched over the hole the touchdown is under review certainly haven't seen anything to overturn it and i think he was i think he did break the plane before that ball was knocked free brown came in fourth in the country with eight rushing touchdowns he now has nine they call him the rushing king at uab we've talked about milt williams he runs over him khalil ladler in there as well and then trey baldwin trying to get in there to dislodge the ball but he crosses the plane yeah i don't see any way you overturn that [Applause] and uab is going to take the lead for the first time in this game there was trey baldwin who came in and dislodged it but there's uh certainly no evidence here where you can overturn it what a story spencer brown is i think when it's all said and done he might be the most influential part of this uab return i mean the fact they didn't have football five years ago spencer brown's a local kid comes in here the first freshman all-american of this kind of resumed program the ability to recruit attract talent in the area that's what spencer brown is all about and you look at that all-time conference usa running back list there's a lot of nfl names on there of guys you would recognize spencer brown is up there with the best of them yeah he needs to review the ruler of the field stand touchdown needs about 300 more yards to move into the top 10 all time in conference usa history 16 carries 84 yards in his 40th career rushing touchdown his 41st career touchdown he broke the all-time touchdown record at uab last week it was a record that had stood for over a quarter century we saw him right there on the sideline nodding his headset i'm just getting started coach well the way this offensive line is going i think he might be right 210 rushing yards now for this uab offense they haven't needed anything from the passing game and despite a couple of picks and run backs it's a four-point lead for the blazers there is a marker down after the p-a-t chris if you were on the sideline would you be a uh a sleeve guy a mass guy a shield guy or would you go boy i i don't want the shield fogging up on me i think i would pull the old skip holds there i think i would do the uh you know the bank robber look i like the uh the nick saban mesh uh a little little mass deal so you can still get on your players and they can read your lips but you get the protection as well i supposed unsportsmanlike honda kicking team number nine test on the kickoff [Applause] well it's a big penalty unsportsmanlike so they're going to be kicking off on the 20-yard line with 142 to go here in the first half and three time outs for louisiana tech [Applause] [Music] we talked about at the top of the show we might see four quarterbacks in this game and we've seen them all in this first half yeah it's tough for bryce and lucero especially the young young quarterback you don't want to pull him because that's detrimental for your confidence we'll see what they do moving forward but tyler johnson i mean you were seeing right there only one throw it's a great post throw but haven't seen much in on the latex side of things luke anthony i like what i'm seeing i mean the completion percentage isn't necessarily there but i love the way he's operating this offense and aaron allen did some good things as well to me if i'm skip holds with la tech you got to pick one and kind of stick with them in the second half so they can get a rhythm and they can get confidence uh but it's a good sign for the bulldogs that both quarterbacks are doing some good things and louisiana tech will certainly be looking for points before the half did he just have to use the timeout there i think the play clock might have been uh winding down and might want to have a talk with his team because they are kicking it from the 20. hey b yes yes it was a timeout uab i could uh i could make it out so they got to kick off from the 20-yard line here that's that's a big penalty so they're going to get already they have a couple good return men wayne tucson came into this game second in the nation in total kickoff return yards and he had a good one to start this game and with a minute 42 until half you're gonna get some good field position have all three of your time out timeouts excuse me let's just go play ball i know that's what louisiana tech would like to do but bill clark certainly has a question about something man there was a uh one sportsman like conduct kind of called on that p-a-t and that's something he he's been asking about i'm not sure what his argument is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] but the ball is marked at the 20-yard line ready for kickoff after the timeout [Applause] don't usually see all four refs [Applause] and now the team's back out on to the field [Music] [Applause] will be a kick from the 20. [Applause] here's the p-80 that uh resulted in that unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and it was kind of hard to hear who it was on and what it was about because the mic keeps breaking let me see if someone swings at another guy or i wonder what's going on well nonetheless right there uab with a short kick and a fair catch at the 42-yard line so great field position for louisiana tech and plenty of time and all their time outs that's a sign of respect to cj powell and wayne toussaint latex return man they don't want to give him a pitch to hit they're gonna cut their losses pooch it and it's a 45-yard line advantageous field position looks like they're going to get luke anthony in here at quarterback big possession here they're mocking that at the 47. [Applause] he's quite certain it was a fair catch at the 42 i'm sure those of you with dvrs can easily just rewind it and see but great starting field position for louisiana tech as they mark it at the 47-yard line and anthony to throw complete hardy spins inside the 30. hardy to the 22-yard line and that's his man this receiver group for lot tech a lot of guys that have equal production equal touchdowns but hardy's the man that can go and get his they give him a nice little slant route right there and luke anthony's playing point guard right now uab was mixing up the coverage trying to roll safety down maybe in that last play doesn't confuse anthony at all [Music] and now anthony just throws it into the dirt and our crew did go back and look at that fair catch on the kickoff it was at the 42-yard line they marked it at the 47. so louisiana tech got five extra yards for apparently no reason [Applause] yeah take a look at it again the fair catch i mean right at the 42 and again they marked it at the 47. so a little halloween treat right there i guess that's home cooking right here in rustin israel tucker the handoff and he's got nowhere to go nakia eason makes the stop clock ticking coming up on a minute to go louisiana tech doesn't really have to be in that much of a furry right now because it's third and long they still have all three of their timeouts and they may just have to kick a field goal after this play anyway yeah third and ten the worst thing you can do is turn the ball over but once again with your quarterback playing well i would trust him if you like one of your third and long plays let's go for it oh they had a defensive lineman jump anthony throws intercepted at the goal line now there is a flag might be for offside if it's not we might have a run back and we will it's going to be a run back for uab 100 yards for damon miller but there are all kinds of flags down and i think the first one's going to be offside and then i think there might have been a block in the back or holding on the return we are up here in the booth looking at four flags on the a field of laundry let's see what it is but yeah it looks like a free play that was the mindset that luke anthony had at least by throwing it up there that's one thing they've done well this year is getting defensive lines offsides does a good job kind of mixing up his cadence but that's the impression i got in terms of him throwing it up there because he knew this was going to come back no matter what because that flag did come early and we did see a defensive end jump into the neutral zone but max i thought he got back i didn't see what number that was who that was but i thought he got back on side before the snap of the football good point [Music] but yeah the timing of that when that flag was thrown definitely looked like enough sides and if you're a quarterback you probably see that one jumps in that flag and you say okay [Applause] [Applause] by the defense after the interception is declined third down yeah chris you talked about it you definitely see that as a quarterback you know when you're going on a hard count going on two that you're doing it for a reason you're keeping the corner of your eyes open for flags so that's nikita eason who's flagged for offside maybe he didn't get back all the way he got backed a little bit maybe not all the way certainly not enough for the officials here and so the flag for offside and it's third down in five and a timeout is called by louisiana tech with 27 seconds left here in this first half [Applause] time out louisiana they're first 32nd it's really the kind of game that you'd expect on halloween under what will be a full moon a little bit of everything here no shortage no shortage of action for sure and this play is going to be big you go third and six 27 seconds left in the half they're calling the timeout making sure they're on the same page and find their best red zone beater right here to look like uav walked out in man coverage last time i'm sure skip holds he's talking with offensive coordinating making sure they get lined up skip holds talks to her he calls plays but he made a point this week to say hey it's a group decision out there in terms of all offensive coaches kind of giving their play call thoughts joe sloan the offensive coordinator he was a co-offensive coordinator last season with todd fitch who left it to become the oc at vandy you see what skip and joe dial up on third and five with 27 seconds to go louisiana tech down 14-10 tucker the running back hardy comes in motion anthony has an open receiver it's hardy it's a touchdown somersault [Music] we are seeing a lot of production out of the number six receivers today that one's adrian hardy he's their go-to guy i love what they did they motioned them down into the slot give them a nice little out route it's an easy throw to throw as a quarterback very clear picture and you make one guy miss hardy's a bigger receiver gets in there very physical guy what a huge touchdown right there assuming they get the extra point to go up the fourth half big time drive right there and assuming that he actually did get the ball across it was close at the goal line but he was wide open the defender bronte harris stumbled once then slipped and then hardy head over heels at the goal line and we won't see it right there in the picture but they they motion down hardy a little bit and what that does is that forces bronte harris to soften up a little bit and get his hips looking towards inside excuse me and they break towards the outside a great scheme right there by latex dialed it up for your go-to receiver to get open they are they are looking at this as they do and um i thought that maybe the elbow was down before he crossed the goal line but that does not appear to be the case they are gonna say it's good it's a touchdown not enough to overturn marty gets the touchdown that offside penalty ends up being huge and costing uab big time barnes the extra point and louisiana tech takes a 17-14 lead with 19 seconds to go how about the moves from hardy yeah watch this he makes he's on an island with this corner little juke right there puts his left foot in the ground gets up and gets into the end zone for the bulldogs bronte harris is not going to want to see that in film study that is not fun 18-yard touchdown reception for adrian hardy came in leading this team in catches and receiving yards and they're playing better louisiana tech looking looking as good as they they've had all season really um and i can't emphasize enough how much i love the offensive game skip holds his call last week he saw a ton of that fullback this week they're saying you know what the strength of our offense is that receiver position let's find ways to get the ball in their hands a lot of this quick passing game getting a lot of guys involved low kick that'll be scooped up at the five yard line and we've got a return barnes the [Music] [Applause] spencer brown 16 carries 84 yards for this rushing trio dwayne mcbride had that 75-yard touchdown run and lucy's stanley's only seen it once he went for 46 yards [Applause] and right here gets interesting you're at midfield 11 seconds you've got a timeout you've had an experienced quarterback you give them outbreaking routes to the bottom of the screen try to find an easy completion potentially make it interesting and get closer to field goal range and looks like bryce okay johnston has seen the ball the last couple of series and he's looked good one for one 27 yards i mean he's looked good in that one pass he's also looked good turning and handing the ball to his running backs but lucero is getting another crack here at the 47-yard line with 11 seconds left louisiana their second 32nd and right there they lined up with three receivers to the top of the screen i would expect them to try to get watkins the ball get up field get as much as you can and then take a timeout i think latex saw the same thing called a timeout want to discuss things big game in the west division around conference usa you had florida atlantic knocking off utsa 24-3 so willie taggerton company two and one on the season two and one in conference play everybody chasing marshall on that side marshall fiu postponed north texas utep postponed rice heartbreaking loss on that quadruple doink in overtime looking good on the road at southern miss [Applause] southern miss on their third coach of the season scotty walden leaving to take over austin peay who was the little head coach here we go lucero throwing complete timeout and the clock will stop it won't stop until three seconds they should put more on the whistle and when i was in this scenario quarterback to come back uab their third full timeout the cutoffs usually seven seconds in terms of if you do a five yard quick out can you complete it get out of bounds without going over the time slot obviously with three seconds left that makes it tough you either got to go hail mary and trust your receivers you got mitchell and watkins it's about the only thing you can do you're not kicking a field goal from this territory yeah i mean if they went back and looked at the clock i think you would put five or maybe six seconds but even then if that doesn't reach your seven point threshold there your seven second threshold five seconds on the game clock okay they're gonna add two seconds to five but does that change anything i don't think so like i said yes seven seconds was kind of the magic number of the bare minimum time you need to throw a quick out to the boundary get out of bounds before the clock runs out five seconds hail mary's your best option you know they've had a couple of interceptions already have the louisiana tech bulldogs bj williamson had both of them the second one he lateraled to khalil ladler who ran it in for a touchdown right here where's austin watkins yep they're going to put him in the three receiver side to the bottom [Applause] [Music] one play here before the half louisiana tech sends pressure lucero rolling out of it can he get it to the end zone he throws it down there he's hauled in touchdown [Applause] are you kidding me it looked like prince may have pushed off and got away with one right there but garrett prince they're natural tight end very athletic a former receiver in community college transfers to uab switches to tight end there's a reason he's out there he's their big physical presence let's see him on right here does he push off yeah i'm good with it what a play right there by uab he gets in there i don't know the football though max i i it kind of slid down between his thighs and i think when they look at this they might overturn it i gotta trust you on this time i'm not going to go 0 for 2 in the debut keep in mind the call in the field is a touchdown but you take a look at the footballs prince grabs it the football is not in control and is his foot it's close to being out of bounds there can't quite tell you certainly can't tell about the foot from that angle let's see what we got here watch and watch the ball as well and see if he ever really has control of it bj williams gets in the camera angle and they are going to overturn it the foot out of bounds the ball not in hand and louisiana dodges a bullet on the final play of the first half so wipe out what would have been a hail mary touchdown for garrett prince and a uab lead instead on this halloween it's a lead for lots hip going to the break it's time for some action [Music] 17 to 14 lead on uab the blazers are averaging over nine yards per play that's thanks in part to some big plays in the running game without a doubt we've seen many faces and they're led by spencer brown but we've also seen dwayne mcbride and jermaine brown as well here are the numbers 16 rushes spencer brown's been the workhorse but i would expect a heavy dose of this in the second half as this louisiana tech defense might wear down a little bit 20 carries for 210 yards and a couple touchdowns for those trio running backs on louisiana tech side luke anthony has done better at the quarterback position that we have seen aaron allman a couple of series anthony 7-14 did throw a touchdown to adrian hardy toward the end of the first half who leads the team in receiving yards for uab bryson lucero has those two big interceptions he was pinched for a couple of series uh tyler johnston the third came in but lucero did get the ball on the last drive of the half so it'll be interesting to see who uab goes with to start this second half they'll get the football down by three great to have you with us stadium's coverage of conference usa football with max brown i'm chris hassell and a returnable kick and uab gonna have great starting field position out near midfield and they've had a couple of good run backs by jermaine brown jr mostly a running back but boy he's he's taken a couple kicks his first of the year we are seeing some activity in the kick return game here gets out to the 50-yard line brown is explosive that's two in a row for him sets up uab with great field position market right at midfield it looks like we're gonna get tyler johnson i wonder if we got lucero towards the end of the half just because it was as it was a situational football play and scenario maybe they trust lucero's reps in that case now there were only 11 seconds left they were out near midfield maybe they trust uh his arm as well and johnston for the most part all he's done is turn and hand off he's only put the ball in the air once it was a 27-yard completion that led to their first touchdown of this game my second touchdown i should say but when you have a running game going this good why not keep it on the ground spencer brown gets the carry again big hole left side brown to the 30 brown to the 25 they are tearing apart the first line of defense for louisiana tech check out this offensive line looks like the right guard matthew treehearn gets to gets his man right there great job by this unit and like we talked about wearing down this defense spencer brown if he gets to the second and third level without a single hand on him that's going to be a long second half for this lot tech defense spencer brown heavy dose early and often fifth 100 yard game of the season 18th of his career and they go right back to him this time bj will beg your pardon trey baldwin was able to drill him into the turf after a pickup of just two we talked about it in the open the skill set is not that much different from lacero and johnston one's older one's younger they like the upside with lucero but obviously the two mistakes has forced tyler johnson into the game but in terms of how you're calling this game for uab not a lot changes with who's behind center spencer brown out dwayne mcbride in had a 75-yard touchdown run in the first half right back to mcbride big hole again inside the 10. nick bride all he does is score touchdowns 22 yarder and the blazers are back on top that's easy money for deuce deuce dwayne mcbride the youngster getting in again and once once again we're seeing the ability for uab to get to the second and third level in a hurry credit this offensive line for getting their combination blocks and mcbride gets into the end zone again this kid's incredible came in averaging 10 yards of carry had 26 carries for 263 and a couple touchdowns coming into this game in this one four carries 102 yards and two touchdowns one from 75 this one from 22. four deuce deuce 22 dwayne mcbride true freshman give her the blaze of the game and the blazers have a 21-17 lead here early in the third hey on offensive install was in at this point this season just because of no spring ball limited fall camp it's just hard to input that many concepts and plays but today it's noticeably different the amount of plays and answers they're given luke anthony had expected them to continue to dive into that in the second half anthony seven for 14 131 yards at a touchdown which came on the last drive of the first half for the louisiana tech penalty marker down and a delay of game right out of a touch back delay a game offense five-yard penalty first down i mean that just can't happen can't happen you're late out of the huddle from the sideline that's on the staff a little bit and it looked like luke anthony was trying to give a hand signal to his receivers on the bottom of the screen just unaware of the play you cannot have that penalty if you're in offense [Applause] [Music] so now backed up behind the chains to start their first drive of the second half after uab marks it right down the field on the ground louisiana tech has not had that same success on the ground israel tucker did have a couple of nice runs early but louisiana tech now 13 carries for 30 yards in this game [Applause] it's the only team in the conference averaging under 100 yards rushing it's very noticeable the change in who they're leaning on from last week to this week being outrushed by 230 right now it was jordan smith i mean he knew he was too far over he just needed to keep going defense number 22 unabated five yard penalty second down it's missed again we haven't really talked about that much great player but that's not why we want to be talking about him the transfer from florida i believe it was came over last year burst onto the scene hasn't had a ton of productivity this year but he's still a guy that every offense has to game plan because of his ability to set the edge on the outside yeah they feel like he could be the first uab player drafted in five or six years play fake anthony batted in the air and intercepted antonio moultrie batted it down on halloween no less and caught it in a spider web of sorts boy that was bad i shouldn't have said that defense alignment gets his big paw up there what a play no shortage of action today chris let's check it out here from the defensive tackle spot gets off uses both hands anthony tried to bat it down and couldn't we knew the strength of this defense was that defensive line very versatile very athletic as shown right there by moultrie big interception now sets up the offense with only 19 yards to go and a handoff to brown right side he bangs his way close to the 10. some shoving after the whistle this is huge right here if you're lot tech gotta only give up three chris we blink and it's the the second half's already under away already leaning towards uab uab's coming into this game more experience they like their team got championship on the mind right here is a drive for this defense let's get this linebacker unit going make some plays and let's get this up uab offense off the field and you got to expect every play is going to be a run play at this point the way that uab has been moving the football and gashing this latex defense on the ground i can't imagine that they would think about putting it in the air [Applause] there is no need to spencer brown gets the carry spencer brown to the end zone they are running all over the dogs one thing that goes underrated with spencer brown is his vision we've talked about the physicality but the ability to roll the running back or that run back finds the crease gets one-on-one with the safety outruns williamson gets into the zone yeah you were talking about that all week max about a lot of times you see brown start to run to the right and then cut back and end up left with a wide open lane and that's exactly what happened there [Applause] that's their scheme for uab that zone running scheme they get get going to one side they have no problem rolling it back but it starts with defense for uab coming up with a big interception from moultrie and man this third quarter started off fast for uab their experience is showing today and here on the touchdown a little bit different action not outside zone inside zone handed it off to four and like you said chris you don't need to reinvent the wheel just hand the ball off to number four and good things will happen already at 21 rushes and we're 11 minutes left in the third quarter i'd expect even more of a heavy dose from spencer brown boy he's had a workmanlike effort in this game he is now up to 10 rushing touchdowns on the season he was already top 10 in the country in rushing touchdowns and there might be more coming his way here in the second half the way this uab offensive line is going and it's getting into danger time now for the louisiana tech two quick touchdowns for uab this louisiana tech offense is not a quick strike offense so a very important drive as wayne tucson stays in the end zone but come out to the 25 yard line coach switching up to the shield chris not worried about the fog first time we've seen that but he's more focused on not getting to delay a game here more than anything he's got the little mask down the [Applause] welder's mask on maybe that'll be some new juju for the bulldogs on offense they need it now 11 to go here in the third and uab has their largest lead of the game at 11. louisiana tech led this game 10 nothing [Applause] still not much success on the ground [Applause] once again staying in that 10 personnel leaving fullbacks off the field if latex is going to win this game it's going to be on the right arm of number nine i don't mind getting the run game involved especially with this much time left in the game it's got to be through there let's see what they do here in this punch formation only averaging 2.3 yards per carry on 14 carries screen pass to smoke harris and that was blown up by bronte harris seen harrison coverage right there we see his physicality in the run game right there comes up makes a play great job by number one and once again we're third and long here for la tech on their own side of the field you have to think they're going to look for hardy who's on the bottom of your screen they did an out route before maybe do a dig route here and third and long that's what i would go with tucker in motion out of the backfield anthony steps up anthony's still looking now throws it down the sideline tucker dropped it and they went with hardy on a dig route he was wide open if they had the protection he was right there but a great job getting out of the pockets barely missed him you can see his eyes hardy's going to come into your screen on the right right there you can see him a little bit but luke gets flushed out and just misses him that's a receiver maybe that's caught yeah dude absolutely hammered out oh my god wow chin right there i know for me i was a guy with the previous play is under review yeah i think they're going to look to see if that's targeting on chris mole [Applause] that was right up in under the chin under the face mask i hope he's okay i know for me i was a qb that's got a long long neck and a big adam's apple i would have got destroyed on that one that's crown of the helmet that's that's that's not fun well what do you think it's in the chest originally is what i'm thinking it's really not the head there's a reason i made the neck comment i'm thinking it's clean just a very violent football play but is he lunging with you there is no foul for target good call max and i like that because i feel like oftentimes we fall into the mold of right there potentially that being an injection just because of the state of the union and football these days but right there that's just a violent football play i like the no call there so chris mull gets to stay in the game and uab's going to get the ball back once again louisiana tech does nothing on offense a terrible start to this second half [Music] rugby style boots it good bounce and it's rolling down close to the 30-yard line [Applause] you know uab closing in on 300 yards on the ground they picked up right where they left off into the second half already a couple rushing touchdowns yeah the second half a week ago they got beat up lost a close one but today the second half is starting off good for the blazers so far going right to the rushing game seeing both running backs and right now walking out is their third running back so they're using the whole stable and i would bet chris they're going to continue to lean on this run game i don't know why you wouldn't at this point [Applause] well they don't they pass it over the top wide open i guess that's why you pass it austin watkins junior sixth catch of the game and he's up near 100 yards and that's exactly why you pass it you also pass it because number six has had a great day so far some big time plays i like what they did right there a little corner route keeping six involved in this game having watkins be an impact player he is special and it's so easy to focus on the run game for uab but they have receivers out there that can really make some plays now they go back to the ground and that again is jermaine brown jr [Applause] you saw the number for austin watkins jr his top 10 in receiving yards chris coming into this game tyler grubbs is a name that we had circled the whole week the true freshman for lottek was leading the country and tackles we haven't said his name once he's going to be right there in the middle trying to defend this run he's got to he's got to step it up his defense has got to step it up if they're going to stay in this ball game second down and one and they hand to number one it's a first down to the 35 yard line you brought up last week it was a heartbreaking defeat for both teams but for uab in particular they lost their 21 game home field winning streak in a huge game against louisiana and you know you hang on you win that game you might even be ranked this week it was a tough pill to swallow and it was really hard on the team bill clark was telling us that it was nice that they had that extra day it was a friday game they needed that extra day to just kind of reset kind of wallow feel sorry for yourself reflect on the long home winning streak and then get back to work right one incomplete intended for brown junior the second down and ten because that was a really important to this team that home field winning streak they hadn't lost since they they came back to the field after a couple of years out of college football and to lose in that fashion blowing a late lead not easy to swallow that's for sure and the beauty is at a conference game so everything they want is still ahead of them that helps when you have an important game on the schedule the very next week doesn't allow you to have any sort of lull and if they win this one if they can hang on here it's going to be hard for anybody to catch him because see right there louisiana tech goes a little safety blitz that's kind of the turning point in this game where you're saying hey we're getting safeties involved in the run defense forcing johnson to really beat you with his arm i would expect every single play from here on out have a one-high look bring your other safety inside the box and really help this defense align and linebacker unit in the run game third down and two [Applause] if uab can win this they basically have a two game two to three game lead on just about everybody there's only three conference games left on their schedule mcbride stacked up he's short it'll be fourth down in one you can look at the the west standings you see southern miss there only one loss and they still do have to play southern miss do the uab blazers but it looks like they're going to take their second loss of the season today they're losing the home 23-6 in the fourth quarter against rice so uab with head-to-head wins against utsa they would have one today against louisiana tech will pretty much wrap up this division for the victory today fourth and one they're gonna go for it or at least show that they're going for they'll keep it on the ground guess who mcbride first down i guess you may have guessed um spencer brown but both those guys are over 100 yards and bride picks up the big first and that feels like a statement play call right there by bill clark only six minutes left in the third quarter not trying to really set the tone for the rest of this game but right here runs into a wall great job initially by la tech but they get out leveraged allowing mcbride to get outside and we've talked about it before the ability for these running backs to cut back use their vision to find the open lane definitely evident right there another over 300 yards on the ground as a team 31 carries for 303 just about 10 yards per carry that one gonna be a loss of one you see some emotion there from milton williams i mean come on guys let's hold him into a field goal here stay in this game i mean right now they do have to show some emotion because i mean they're getting it run down their throats and he's their leader they talked about it the only starter returning from a year ago he's their guy he's the guy that up here in the booth i have one guy highlighted it's milton williams he's got to get him going second and ten defense is in a great spot right here let's see what they can do [Applause] without ezekiel barnett one of their top linebackers in this game pressure johnston throws it end zone over the head of a wide open hayden pittman i haven't talked about hayden pittman tonight so far he's their rugged old-school tight end but they're not afraid to get him out there in the route concept had him beat their high low in the true freshman corner cedric woods woods gets caught in the middle a little bit he's open there just got to put it on him johnston barely misses him right there third down and 10 now all uab in this third quarter louisiana tech led at halftime but they've been outscored 14 nothing big blitz was coming but uh flag at a false start some extracurriculars in the middle there [Applause] so it's definitely going to be a false start you wonder if there's anything else 55. [Applause] so that's andrew smith jr [Applause] and i'm sure they're chirping away at each other in the trenches you saw milton williams it was funny we were talking to coach skip holtz this week he doesn't like the extra chatter or maybe you need a little bit here to get your defense going third and 15. and nowhere to run trey baldwin [Applause] [Music] at least a somewhat difficult field goal here from the 27-yard line it'll be a 45-yard attempt [Applause] this is matt quinn he's made his last five six of seven on the season this would be his longest of the year [Music] [Applause] lead [Applause] and the interception and that's set up a touchdown for uab to take a two score lead for the first time in this game they lead it by 14 now in the third quarter and uh louisiana tech has to respond with something or this could get out of hand the way that uab is running the ball the credit latex defense you force them to a field goal you're only down 14. tons of game left louisiana tech offensively he's just got to get some some rhythm and once again get luke anthony involved this kick taken in three yards deep in the end zone and it will be returned out near the 25 yard line we'll step aside and see what the bulldogs can do on offense every product good afternoon luke anthony sitting this series out he's been sharing time with aaron allen 4 7 four yards this is the drive they need something and they need something now down by fourteen this thing's starting to slip away they had a lead at halftime allen tosses it to the fullback and that pass caught by jacob adams [Applause] you can tell skip holt's trying to go back to a concept that allen had success with early in the game the play action roll right flood concept uab defensive justin rallying to the ball and tackling the fullback no gain on the play second down and 10. they haven't gotten anything going offensively in the second half they've also turned the ball over israel tucker dragging antonio moultrie to the 30-yard line third down and five a great push right there by tucker the playbook's a lot different at third and five versus third and eight third and nine great job by 22 to push forward we saw last third down they had hardy on the bottom of the screen with a dig route he was open you have to wonder if holt sees that it's gonna go back to that display potentially in the same exact position [Applause] under three minutes to play in the third allen looking right for hardy it's caught but he's short of the first down two full yards short yikes that's the problem sometimes when you throw out routes your quarterback protects his receiver and kind of throws it downhill to protect it against the defender you're short on your deck they go back to the out route which they had success in the first half we saw that touchdown by hardy was an out route concept very similar action but he's got to get his depth got to make sure you're behind the sticks so if that throw happens you don't find yourself six feet short when the slide continues for louisiana tech here in the second half just nothing offensively myron mitchell feels it at the 21-yard line it is time for our midas touch moment of the game for tires brakes oil everything trust the midas touch and it's austin watkins jr getting it from tyler johnston the third i thought it was going to be bryce and lucero but tyler johnson gets thrown into the action in the first half great ball right there on a post route and we've talked about austin watkins the whole night he's going to find himself in the nfl one day physical receiver and it looks like right here they're going back to lucero found himself on the bench after throwing a couple interceptions in the first half but the quarterbacks haven't been asked to do much for uab it's been all run game milton williams in on that stop loss of one on the play so give williams another tfl led the team in that category coming into this game and having been in a quarterback carousel situation many times in my college career before i think when they're going back to lucero they know that long term he's their guy as the youngster so it's a huge hit to your confidence if he's benched and never sees the field again again but him going back in the game shows how much confidence they have in him long term and they want to make sure he stays involved in this game the redshirt freshman and johnston is a redshirt junior handoff in a stutter step again milton williams there to shut it down boy he's come to play the last six or seven snaps hasn't he i love williams i love 97. you can see him right now he's shaking his head he's staying on their side of the ball he's saying you're not moving me around i know you guys are up 14 but there's a whole quarter left 97's getting it down in the trenches and they're hoping the uav puts the ball in the air again because they have one pick six they almost had another taken down at the three yard line that might be their way back into this game if they could force uab to throw the football look out for number four already has himself too ah we loved him up chris well he was pointing at an offensive lineman as he ran by but i don't think i saw a movement on the line i was wrong penalty remains third down i should have known because a couple of bulldogs jumped at the same time william's one of them and he immediately pointed at one of those offensive linemen but i mean why wouldn't he yeah they do that all the time but he's telling the truth [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and yeah he did he did have the body language that he moved so cody raglan the left tackle definitely moved there head off to jermaine brown jr not nearly enough for a first down louisiana tech who will force a punt pending this flag in the backfield [Applause] looked like it was a hole on number 51 jacoby jones the guy getting to start at left guard as a result of telford being out and raglan moving outside that's always the concern when you have outside [Applause] defense keeping him in the game now if you're getting just run over you know williams play in the red zone last drive where he made a stop and then showed a ton of emotion it seemed to turn things around for this defense because they could not stop uab on the ground before that and that emotions carried over to the sideline you can see him barking just took his helmet off that's the juice you need at a turning point in this game [Applause] so they won't be able to take the clock all the way down to end the quarter and smoke harris deep to receive maybe he can make a play in the return game there's a lot of room to the top of the screen if he gets a pitch to hit looks like he does from the 37 harris makes a move harris bouncing down to the 46-yard line good starting field position for louisiana tech with 21 seconds to go in the third another look at the remaining games for both of these teams uab has a buy and then home against north texas at utep and home against southern miss now there is also a chance that they would have to play rice but if uab has the the championship in the division championship all done and said for and rice isn't in contention they probably wouldn't have to play that game louisiana tech they go on the road to denton in north texas next week [Applause] aaron allen again the quarterback and he guns it over the middle complete to the 30-yard line and that is johan johnson and finally some life from this louisiana tech offense for the first time all quarter and it comes on what will likely be the final play of the quarter trying to get one more in they can't do it that's the end of the third quarter well the defense giving louisiana tech a chance good field position and a chance to get right back in this one on halloween [Music] five six seven eight boom bam get it get it bust it up boom this fall we're it was all uab in the third quarter 17-0 they outscored louisiana tech but louisiana tech does have some momentum here to start the fourth they're at the 30-yard line of uab first and 10. [Applause] and aaron allen trying to lead a touchdown drive to get him back in this football game it did lead 10-nothing but uab has outscored him 31-7 since [Applause] and allen looking deep it's caught touchdown louisiana [Music] [Applause] personal foul roughing the passer defense number 22. touchdown's good assist on the call so they'll get to kick off from the 50-yard line what a throw by aaron allen and it's a byproduct of the safety go up deep he's going over towards hardy opens up the slot receiver down the middle on a little post route one-on-one coverage with his man a great ball great catch and taking the hit with the roughing the passer call aaron allen hot start to the fourth quarter [Applause] and the extra point makes it a seven-point game [Applause] and you take one more look at the touchdown connection and watch this safety right here he's gonna work towards hardy who's right here on the bottom of your screen but that opens up the slot receiver in the middle and when we play it right here watch him break down the crease right in the middle that's where the green grass is it's a great throw great ball and a big time catch at an opportunistic time right there taking the hit and we're seeing the whole array of latex receivers juwan johnson hasn't done a ton this whole year to be honest but right there making a big time play and we got a ball game here in ruston louisiana that was jordan smith that hit him late and now from midfield i was saying last week on our broadcast i would kick an onside here a lot of times you'll see teams kick it through the back of the end zone you come out to the 25. you kick it onside worst case scenario you're giving up what 15 yards to the 40-yard line give it a shot and skip holds kind of reminds me of a guy that that's what he's about he would he would take that chance right here [Music] i kind of like that call you see what they they try to do gabe is the kickoff specialist uab knows that they're walking up right at the 10-yard mark they would at least try something but they're not going to so you're going to kick it all the way through the end zone you're going to come out to the 25 i just don't see any upside in doing that louisiana tech has the momentum right now defensively milton milton williams and those boys doing some good things but who's your quarterback for uab who do you start with in the fourth quarter they've been running all over louisiana tech until the last drive and a half or so this louisiana tech defensive front has finally stepped up it's going to be bryce and lucero once again who started this game seven for 12 66 yards with two interceptions one of them resulted in a touchdown a pick six the other one nearly a pick six it was a huge tackle by austin watkins inside the five-yard line it's the difference in this game really because you have to wonder how much of this decision is on the back of just sheer practice reps and johnson not being available that much a week leading up and johnston's been out since the second game of the season against miami where his non-throwing shoulder and has not been at practice at all the last six weeks returned this week and the way bill clark was talking is that i mean there's a chance you see him but probably only if if there's an injury to bryce and lucero but the ciro threw two bad pics in that first half and johnston came in he's only thrown four passes but he looked pretty good no doubt gain of two on first down second and eight as this louisiana tech defense tries to keep the momentum going play fake lucero gets hit as he throws and it'll be third down and long looks like his arm got hit right there trying to fit into a tight window and you can see this latex defense they have seven guys in the box seven and a half almost with the outside linebacker they are saying all right bryson you have to beat us we are not going to let this russian attack beat us and so far it's working here on this drive that was desean hall the sophomore from gonzales louisiana and now third and eight [Applause] about 7 000 fans allowed into joe ia stadium 25 capacity some confusion lining up and we get a timeout first big third down coming up next seven faced with a big third down and eight against the louisiana tech defense that suddenly found its footing the uav just one of eight on third downs in this game they go two tight ends take mitchell off the field macero slings it incomplete it was intended for the tight end pittman and it's a three and out and you knew something was up they took myron mitchell off the field one of their second best receiver elect to go both tight ends on the same side they must have saw something schematically that they knew that was their answer just some pressure and a missed throw right there interesting call and a great job by this stingy lotek defense smoke harris had a good punt return last time set louisiana tech up in uab territory this time won't get a chance fair catch at the 29. [Applause] looking around the country our saturday spotlight boston college darn near did it no trevor lawrence for clemson but they still were able to come back and win it cincinnati still perfect setting a school record with their 16th straight home victory and they blew out memphis how about the spartans stunning michigan i mean michigan looked really good last week against minnesota michigan state got blown out and we got the big ten showdown tonight you see how penn state can respond after losing last week last second to indiana that number seven next to cincinnati is very interested in the year where yeah not many less less weeks to play this feels like if any year a guy a non-power five team could squeak in it would be 20 20. aaron allen threw the touchdown pass last time louisiana tech had the football this time it's a handoff to justin henderson who gets met in the backfield and it's a loss of five he had no chance with 13 48 left in this game you can see uab's defense going to lean on this defensive line only at three down lime in that play and they still get penetration that's the group they trust they really trust their entire defense they're going to give some assistance in the secondary with allen making some big-time throws as of late anderson was a pre-season all-conference usa d at over a thousand yards last season but [Applause] tough year for them so far three carries minus six yards in this game they go right back to him and what'd you think about that call on second and 15. yeah it's tough if your skip holds you're saying man uab's only got three down linemen they have the ability to drop eight that's the scenario you should be able to run the ball but this offensive line has been struggling to get the rushing game going all year long it's kind of the the tale of two tapes right there right there on that on that run put yourself in a tough position third and 12 30 13. got to look for hardy though looks like he's single singled up on the top of your screen and a bunch to the wide side uab only sends three allen completes it but well short of the first down smoke harris to the 33 and it's fourth down and six still a one possession game gotta punt it we fast forward a couple possessions might be a different story once again they utilize rolling out they like allen's ability to use his legs if things break down [Applause] also when you roll out it makes a clearer picture for this quarterback everything's right in front of his vision he doesn't have to scan the entire field condenses the playbook a little bit but big time stop right there by uab and if i'm uab i'm i'm watching for the fake right now there will be a punt they went after it and a fair catch at the 30 dangerous myron mitchell stumbled and barely hung on what a break that would have been stumbling juggling and hanging up 31-24 in a pivotal matchup for the west division at conference usa we told you we were going to see four quarterbacks and we we've seen all four in many reps throughout this entire game very impressed with the louisiana tech quarterbacks i mean luke anthony done some great things but aaron allen the one play that sticks out for me is that touchdown that he threw taking the shot deep down the field and uab is elected to stick with lucero and as i say that looks like that might be johnston still going back and forth in the fourth quarter tyler johnson will hand it off to spencer brown and louisiana tech's done a good job the last couple of possessions a great job in fact yeah stuffing this uab attack i mean this game looked all but over late in the third uab had the ball marching down the field in the red zone ready to go up three scores and something something clicked for this louisiana tech front four they held him to a field goal and we've been able to stay in this football game i think it was the shield switch up by coach the mojo had that mask for the entire first half johnston incomplete it's dropped by myron mitchell whoa that doesn't happen very often number five replace the blitz with the throw louisiana tech brings linebacker pressure from the top of the screen johnson replaces the thro replaces the blitz right there with the throw but it's just a drop right there by mitchell we haven't really talked about mitchell much in today's game unfortunate drop right there puts uab in third and long third down and 11. a uab win pretty much wraps up the division for a third straight year louisiana tech win and it's up for grabs that one is short of the intended receiver it was intended once again for mitchell and it's three and out that's one of the first times we've seen defensive line games you could see the defensive tackles wrapping around the edge creating pressure just mixing up the looks for this uab offense great job there three and out for la tech [Applause] smoke harris deep to receive the kick he's standing at his own 30-yard line kyle greenwell gets it away end over in harris has a chance great move but can't get past the second defender [Applause] td marshall able to make the stop and that is not easy on smoke made the first dude miss the rest the gang is right behind him [Applause] we're going to say it again who's going to be the quarterback looks like they're going to anthony this drive [Music] he really hasn't seemed to faze either of the quarterbacks having been in that situation before it is awfully tough when you're in you're out to get in a rhythm but credit both these quarterbacks staying in rhythm anthony and allen but we talked to coach holtz this week they feel like when it's crunch time luke anthony gives them the best chance to win ball games five wide they're spread anthony finds the open man close to first down yardage that's cj powell and they do mark him out well before the sticks only a pickup of six and that to me is the recipe for success for this lot tech offense with 10 30 left in this game stay in this empty formation spread them out use all the receivers you have you're not gonna win up front in the trenches you win by using all eight receivers that you're comfortable playing with [Applause] the run game has been stuffed again today 17 carries 35 yards only team in the conference not averaging 100 per game anthony he loses one rusher and now throws it deep and that's going to be interference two flags fly that's really hard for a defender you're running around like that you're back to the quarterback and the ball is under thrown the receiver has to work his way back to the football but it's a good job by i think it was griffin a bear the intended receiver who worked his way back and made that contact and made the officials throw that flag both guys were wide open down there i know anthony had some some pressure and wasn't able to flip his hip hips at all it was for this clip they were uh they were open downfield but a bear getting there putting ua being a tough spot a individual player downfield off [Applause] personal foul roughing the passer defense number 44. pass interference defense number zero those fouls all set second down see that drives me crazy two fouls on the defense only one on the offense how do they offset you know it's two versus one so they the uav blazers get lucky because they committed pass interference and roughing the passer two 15-yard penalties but there was an ineligible receiver downfield an eligible man downfield off that offensive line and that means no play and that can't happen usually when you see an eligible offensive lineman downfield it's with the rpo game the latex in empty formation that's not a threat right now that should not happen if you're the offensive line even if he does break the pocket because when you break the pocket that's where plays can be made so back to second and four once again uab with some pressure off the edge that pass complete to johnson just shy of a first down it'll be third and one and now skip holt has a tough decision does he stick with this pass game in third and one or does he run it when most teams would run it third and one you should be able to get three feet but that hasn't been loftec strength this whole night and they did bring in the full back jacob adams lined up in the slot near side and the running back israel tucker and now under center [Applause] [Music] tucker pounding his a defender jump into the neutral zone they didn't snap it so they didn't get the penalty but they got enough of a push to pick up that first down you credit this offense there's a lot of moving pieces there to manage that the different cadences going under center haven't gone under center this whole night as a as a former quarterback that's something that's a lot harder than you would think used to being in shotgun and go under center for one play getting that exchange and getting forward for the first down great job by the unit [Applause] halfway through this fourth quarter lot down seven anthony tucks it and picks up four or five we talk about allen maybe being the more mobile of the two quarterbacks but really anthony's got enough mobility to do exactly that you drop into coverage leave a crease you can go pick up five and this offense is staying on schedule you got second and six here keep it rolling stadiums coverage of conference usa football live from ruston louisiana big battle in the cusa west anthony stays in the pocket and goes down at the line of scrimmage great coverage by the uab secondary we haven't really highlighted them that much this game but that's a unit that they really like a lot of experience haven't really given up that much passing yards throughout the season but watch this coverage nowhere really to go [Applause] maybe hardy on the bottom of the screen but that safety is right there credit this uab defense third down and five probably four down territory uab only sends three it's complete but short of the first down fourth and two [Applause] they just went for it on fourth and one gotta believe they'll go forward on fourth and two from midfield but you're not going to be able to quarterback sneak this one out and i'm wrong they're sending the punt team out wow this decision to me is more of a trust in your defense and the uneasiness with uab's offense that's what they're banking on and i think it's also that they can't run the ball they do have a different look on the formation here and try to pin him deep they would have hoped for better than that 16 yard line is where uab will start with 605 to play in a seven point at the 16 yard line but they have not done very well the last three drives and i think i put that lightly all three and outs this louisiana tech defense which was getting crushed on the ground has really stood up strong late in this game which is a rarity usually it's the opposite you stand up strong early then you get run all over late but dwayne mcbride with a nice run on first down i'm still surprised tech elected that pump the ball at midfield on fourth and two but when you can't run the ball at all the playbook really shrinks and right there they're running at milton williams and he kind of he handled the right tackle i would expect as the game moves forward and they start maybe getting in four minutes situation to run away from 97. willing to bleed the clock here see all the guys close to the line and this will be first down yardage for mcbride one of those two rushers over 100 yards he's now 130 yards on 10 carries had the 75-yard touchdown run in the first half and a 22-yard touchdown run in the second and it shows how much trust they have in dwayne mcbride going to the true freshman with 450 left in this game not going to spencer brown impressive uh showing from 22. clock now under five minutes louisiana tech has all three of those timeouts not using them yet another handoff spinning out of a tackle is mcbride but was barely able to negotiate the line of scrimmage they are daring uab to throw the ball they have seven guys in the box trying to roll in an eighth guy they do not want to get beat late in this game by the russian attack and here we are that game over if not the bulldogs are going to have an opportunity socially distanced fans making some noise on third and six play fake justin throwing it down incomplete they went back to mitchell and that was a very similar concept that bj williamson saw before that he got his pick six on he almost does the exact same thing and passes it off luckily he watkins is a special player so his eyes are there but it's a bang bang play it's ultimately a drop by mitchell right there that should have been completed but man that makes you nervous if you're uab but here we go about to have a two minute drill high kick smoke harris late fair catch inside the 10 yard line who's going to lead this two-minute drill for the louisiana tech very similar decision to a wheat from a week ago right they had a two-minute drill late [Applause] i guess not excuse me two-minute drill was on uab side of things but they had a decision to make late in terms of which quarterback they're gonna go with last week they went with allen we talked with coach holtz he regretted that decision said he probably should have stuck with his starter luke anthony but as i'm saying that and looking at the huddle it looks like they're gonna go with aaron allen who's was about to say the hotter hand but really both quarterbacks have been solid they're trusting number three here though [Applause] got the ball late in that game against utsa through an interception that sealed the deal he also had a chance last meeting at uab with two and a half minutes to go couldn't get the job done that's gotta hurt if you're luke anthony two weeks in a row you don't get the final drive i know he's a transfer but you want that opportunity to lead your team let's see what alan can do here smoke harris in motion one time out preserved by louisiana tech allen has room to run launches it incomplete and no flags that play right there is why allen's in the game he has room to run when you break up the pocket go get the first down now he had all kinds of room and his receiver was turned around threw it to the shoulder that kyle maxwell wasn't looking for allen wanted the flag but that pass was really nowhere near maxwell it's so important two minute drives just find the first completion you don't have to get it all in one pass allen oh he had harris and that would have been first down yardage he's right there love the call once again by skip holtz they've seen slants all night long go with the slant and then he sticks his right foot in the ground smoke harris breaks out if that's an accurate throw and he catches that ball he'll catch that and roll forward 15 20 yard gain honestly back-to-back plays where you're kicking yourself if you're low-tech and now you're up against it third down and 10. 155 to go allen stepping up now throws it complete first down to the 25-yard line adrian hardy [Music] great job by this unit jordan smith uab's elite pass rusher number 22. he's on the bottom of your screen against donovan campbell he gets up field allen steps up takes his eyes from left to right finds this dig route great pickup right there and uab calls its final timeout with 139 to go [Applause] take a look at the route by hardy for this big first down and we've talked about it all night this third down situation look for those dig routes from hardy he's a big physical receiver and you can see allen getting rushed to his left gets out of the pocket but he keeps his eyes downfield almost tipped right there but a very accurate catchable throw and in these two minute situations when you have two deep safeties dropping way back in coverage that's when dig routes can win for you now that they completed one would not be surprised if they go back to it still a long way to go they are 75 yards away from the end zone there's a minute 39 left they need a touchdown uab led by as many as 14. you know they're telling allen right now don't be afraid to use your legs the pocket breaks down [Applause] but you're also as a coach saying you don't want to put too much in his brain just go out and let him play trust him this is why you you train all off season situational football to be prepared for these uh these scenarios [Applause] israel tucker the running back runs out of the backfield again alan pump fakes steps up running and tripped up before he could get to the sideline by jordan smith big play clot moving shoe string tackle by jordan smith and that he's showcasing his athletic ability at six seven 250 plus he's running toe to toe with aaron allen the quarterback that's a big time play right there second nine the snap with 114 quickly to the sideline smoke harris out of bounds that was close [Applause] louisiana tech thankful for that in this two-minute situation with one timeout and a minute left if you catch the ball outside of the numbers these receivers are taught to get as much as you can and get out of bounds if you catch the ball in the middle of the field it's not worth trying to run for the sideline just get up and get as much as you can with one timeout you can still you still have a little bit of a buffer third and three and smoke again has it and that might be a late hit no flag wow that's stunning fierce down i have a feeling if we were not at 25 capacity this stadium would be going nutso i mean that seemed pretty clear and it was right on the louisiana tech bench and jalen key knows it too you can see his eyes going right to the line judge i mean nine times out of ten that's called first and ten for the 36. allen over the middle complete to harris into uab territory first and ten the clock stops with a minute look for them to go tempo right here he really had both receivers on the bottom of the screen that's three catches in and hardy and you kind of get the slot specialist where these linebackers don't know what smoke harris is gonna give them i would expect them to keep going to that side let's take another look i haven't seen anything to overturn the call in the field which was a catch sometimes it helps being 5'6 it can go down a little bit easier well they really missed smoke in that marshall lost at home and then on the road at utsa [Music] [Applause] and i'm surprised he's taken this long they were very quick with the call the hail mary call it half interesting they're taking a long time here i mean clock should start at the whistle for play and there we go so louisiana tech picks up some extra time down the seam almost intercepted it would have been a great game clincher for will bowler [Applause] i don't know that he ever saw hardy and i said that safety started leaking over his way right after i said that they're going two-man and that's the impact of pressure right there makes it tough to deliver that throw had to throw it a lot earlier than he would have hoped right here second and ten 52 seconds left alan zings it incomplete and once again credit this pass rush from uab that receiver's open aaron allen wants to hang on just a little bit longer but he's forced to throw it early because he's got people crawling on his feet it's not easy to operate right there but you're in four down territory 48 seconds left in the game just give me your best concept and to me that's on the bottom of your screen with smoke harris and adrian hardy let's work a two-man concept with those guys [Applause] on third and ten allen looks that way he's got smoke he's got a first down clock stops with 42 seconds left what did we see the first play of this possession we saw in breaking slam that he cut it out right right out the five yard line this time he crosses the face gives him a slant good cat and mouse game great great call right there by skip holt and remember they still have one timeout left allen grows to the sideline maxwell makes a critical mistake could have stepped out of bounds did not they'll have to burn their final timeout that's a redshirt freshman for you kyle maxwell a young mistake louisiana tick there's their third full-time out you have to step out even if you're a young receiver got to know the situation he's so close to the to the sideline but he gets those knees in tough tough situation for lot tech forced to burn that timeout you're still fine luckily you had that timeout but man that's exactly why you call that play you have a hitch towards the sideline you know that worst case scenario if you have pressure allen can get the ball out of his hands to the right sideline he can pick up five pick up six critical mistake though by a young louisiana tech receiver danny knew it you saw him my bad got to live with those mistakes when you have to play red shirt freshman and underclassman kyle maxwell chris at the beginning of the game we talked about isaiah graham being out there one of their starting receivers and i'm looking at my depth chart here literally all seven other guys have made impact plays today or at least got catches it's a great job by this unit smoke harris leads the way with seven catches 54 yards adrian hardy has six catches what are you drawing up right now if your skip holds on a second down and five 25 seconds left no timeouts and you need a touchdown i'm going back to smoke harris baby he's your playmaker i like that they're putting i guess now as i say that there no smoke harris on the field they're going to go with powell instead but i like hardy's matchup on the top of the screen tucker in motion allen picks up the first down clock will stop momentarily he does find powell 20 seconds early in that drive going to the sideline he's just baiting that corner baiting that corner knowing he's got his playmaker adrian hardy on the outside and the one time that corner jumps for the five yard out aaron allen pump fix it and smokes a whole shot right in there it's a great play it is great play calling by this entire staff great execution by this offensive unit and jacob barnes to tie it at 31. he got it and we're tied with 10 seconds left what a drive by aaron allen 90 yards in 13 plays and this was the capper and right here see you see that cut that cover two corner jumping up on that five yard out you throw a whole shot right in there before the safety can get there and when you get the ball out on time it allows a playmaker like hardy to do something with it and that he does he's in for six and allen is stoked what a two-minute drive credit aaron allen that is so tough to come off the bench as a backup you know a week ago you probably heard your coach saying hey man i should have stuck with luke anthony but it's a no flinch mentality from number three he's excited has every right to be what a drive right there not easy to do but aaron allen does it in great fashion and especially after having that opportunity last week against utsa throwing a game clinching interception having the opportunity last year against uab in birmingham not getting the job done backed up at your own 10-yard line with two minutes to go aaron allen made some huge plays to get this game tied and now with 10 seconds left we'll see if they send it deep we've seen a couple great returns from jermaine brown jr number one this kick is short it bounces brown picks it up at the 15. he'll try to reverse field and he's taken down at the 22 with four seconds left i would expect just to run and go to overtime not being totally trustworthy in your quarterbacks tyler johnston is the quarterback coming out and yeah i wouldn't i wouldn't even expect to run i'd expect to kneel down to send us to overtime and that looks like we're going to get [Applause] four quarters not enough we are going to overtime louisiana tech and uab tied at 31. bill clark trying to keep that emotion up big game for both teams on 31. [Applause] defense first all right so louisiana tech's going to get the football first uab alexa defense selected to go on defense all right this is how we got here aaron allen took the ball at the 10-yard line 90 yards away and marched the bulldogs down the field some huge third down conversions along the way and a lot of number five smoke harris got a slant route gotten out route got the go route this is the big one feature playmaker adrian hardy gets into the end zone for six and it looks like they're gonna stick with aaron allen as they should when looking at overtime rules decision initially is easy gotta go on defense but from there it's time to play some ball if i'm aaron allen i'm pumped up get that ball right back to me [Music] did not start this game came in in the first quarter and he and luke anthony kind of went back and forth for most of the game but allen got the late call in the final drive and came through so he's going to get the ball in overtime and to me i would stick with a lot of what you did during the two-minute drill [Applause] that's all game whether your quarterback is alan or your quarterback's anthony that's what's given this team the most success they have not been able to run the ball at all all season and in this game they run the option on first down smoke harris taken down in the backfield [Applause] don't like the call chris that's tough smoke harris you're trying to get allen's legs on the edge get the ball in the hands of a playmaker but to me that's that's very off script they're gonna get a shot here i mean right here second and ten you can still do the same thing you did on first and ten if uh with whatever quick game you liked 23 carries for just 42 yards for the louisiana tech it's a loss of one second and 11. and it's another run israel tucker good run inside the 20. and sets him up for third down in short i guess that's why skip holds his calling plays and i'm not catching the defense off guard credit him with the call getting the ball to izzy tucker third and four here we go [Applause] gotta get it to the 15. look into the sideline for the call and you wonder if they get stopped if they would try to go for this if it's close or if they would take the field goal and take their chances louisiana tech defense has been stout the last quarter plus allen rolls right throws it incomplete wouldn't have been enough for the first down anyway [Applause] and the field goal unit is coming out when your kicker's nickname is money i guess you trust him in this overtime situation but man it looked like he could have hung on in the pocket just a tad bit longer and he had a corner out going to the front pylon the credit this uab defense for buckling up barnes has made one and missed one this one from 36. and he got it buckets [Applause] so on money first overtime series louisiana tech gets three for uab a touchdown wins it at the very least they need a field goal and back to this louisiana tech defense quite frankly they looked dead midway through the third quarter they were getting run all over 300 plus rushing yards for uab they couldn't stop anything and then all of a sudden something clicked milton williams the leader of this defense said we aren't giving up any more yards and they really haven't since really credited this entire unit you mentioned note williams we've talked about him the whole night rightfully so but it's been a group effort and they're going to need more of that here just in the quarterback spencer brown mccarry picks his way for six and right now i'm giving i'm giving the rock to number four he's your senior leader he's your bell cow one of the best backs in conference usa history best back in uab history let's ride number four to this victory [Music] and give him the rock 26 carries 131 yards for brown two touchdowns as well and here he comes first down inside the 15. his 27th carry of the game if you're louisiana tech you got to sell out bring that safety into the box bring seven or eight if the if the scheme allows eight guys into the box force tyler johnson to beat you with his arm pack the line of scrimmage can't let four beat you but a lot easier said than done [Applause] send a couple tight ends to the left side of the formation [Music] [Applause] [Music] don't allow 97 to fire up your defense but there he is getting off that block trying to get to edge but can't hold him that's tough now you're behind the sick stick second and ten you might be forced to use johnson's right arm this 25 capacity crowd making noise handoff to mcbride he's taken down at the 21. it'll be third and long they need to get it down to the three-yard line for a first down i'm gonna sound like a broken record but watch 97 once again just beats that left side of the line and that was the one area where you look at this uab offensive line saying it's a strong group but the one area you might have a mismatch is 97. he is putting this defense on his back in overtime touchdown to win it a field goal to tie at the 21. third and 18. johnston was parking out the signals and bill clark calls his overtime timeout yeah coach clark sitting there saying i got a quarterback that doesn't have that much practice reps as of late he's going up the line of scrimmage looking like he was audible in or some confusion he's cutting his losses and calls the timeout what are you thinking right now if you're bill clark and offensive coordinator bryant vincent when you know that look sure if we get a touchdown we win but a field goal still gets us to a second overtime and to me six yards of spencer brown or they've been keep going to dwayne mcbride six yards of them rushing i like that i think that matters as a kicker in this territory i would call your best run play i would not run towards 97 i would ideally go to the right side of your line you got an all-conference player at right tackle in sydney wells matthew treehurn at right guard i'd run towards his side put the ball in the middle of the field for your kicking game and i would play for second overtime [Applause] and vice versa i might put mill williams to the field now they're going to keep him in the boundary right here there's mild williams johnston quarterback draw taken down and guess who oh wrong number but 93 nonetheless deshawn hall making the play [Applause] gutsy performance by this defensive line and here we go that makes the field goal a little bit tougher they were down at the 13-yard line but they've gone backwards they're now at the 24 and the field goal good to double overtime we go great job matt quinn that cannot be easy you see two go through the uprights inside you've got to be telling yourself man i wish one of those was legit steps up third ice me coach hulks [Applause] skip hold saying matt props and we got a good one here chris [Applause] going into this game the two keys for a lot tech victory were going to be or were getting the quick passing game going they did that and it was the defensive line led by milt williams and they did that in the second half giving them this giving themselves a chance to win this ball game now we're gonna switch sides of the field now and uab is once again gonna be on offense [Music] they have that hail mary at the end of the first half that was originally called a uab touchdown and then reviewed and overturned and there have been a lot of plays on both sides that they're going to go back when they re-watch this game and they're gonna say my goodness it's gonna be a very long film session for sure a lot of learning lessons in this game too a lot of situational football well tyler johnston again the quarterback for uab second overtime watkins in motion play fake johnston launches deep oh that hung up there forever and it's caught [Applause] i can't believe that wasn't picked off that ball hung in the air forever cedric woods was in coverage that's the true freshman hangs in there forever he has watkins to the flat to his right oh it's an absolute duck city a wounded duck and trey shropshire i guess he was the only one actually looking at the ball i mean louisiana tech defenders had plenty of time but i guess they weren't looking at it first in goal what a break for uab [Applause] paul is out no signal yet and another wild play on this night it was close to a touchdown the pile was moving and then all of a sudden the ball came out and louisiana tech got it so a lot to sort out here on the first possession of double overtime someone's still down in the end zone two [Applause] is a fumble recovered by louisiana tech let's see if brown was down or in i'm trying to count jersey numbers brown might be the guy still down on the field zach hannibal came out of there with it [Applause] just straight ahead trusting the size of brown he's going pushing forward raglan's in there pushing it's just a entire pile can't really see what's going on down there but this is where it's so important the call on the field was a fumble so it's gonna have to take indisputable video evidence to overturn that call and in my opinion there's none of that right now unless we can see a knee go down before the ball comes out but i don't see it and you can't tell if the ball is over the goal line either you can't tell either way that's why that call is so important right there if i defend i bet his knee is down just based on momentum but credit guess who once again b.j williamson he's in there with his right arm scratching and clawing away creates that fumble had those two interceptions in the first half [Music] awaiting the call in this critical review that we don't think is going to be able to be overturned you need a camera angle almost done from that side but i don't know if they're gonna get it and if it is upheld louisiana tech will get the football at the 25-yard line any scorer the bulldogs 13 point underdogs coming into this game not many people give it a chance couldn't get the offense going got blown out at home by marshall a couple of weeks ago lost a heartbreaker on the road to utsa last time out and it looked like it was heading for a uab win midway through the third they were cruising and old milton williams the defensive tackle said that's not happening on my watch not on my watch for this defense offense got it done late too really a whole entire team effort can't emphasize how important the call on the field was a fumble that might be the difference when it's all said and done still under review here and once again the ruling on the field is that spencer brown fumbled before going in the end zone before going down in louisiana tech recovery and the referee is heading all the way to the other end of the field to have a chat why'd it take so long to do that interesting take a look again number four with the football the pile starts moving the whistle never never blew for forward progress anything like that and then all of a sudden late the ball comes out you see uav players saying that's a touchdown and then all of a sudden the ball is out yes cindy wells his body language the right tackle looks like he said hey why was that a touchdown what are we doing but they just don't have that angle [Music] agonizing moments for bill clark i mean it's taking a long time and that that's that's fine i mean this is this is the call of the game here you got to take as much time as you need on this i know that going into the season they were looking at you know putting on the amount of time you could take to look at something unless it is a late game altering call and there's a look we haven't seen yet where's his right elbow we could back that up a little bit guys or when the ball comes out you just have no perspective of where that goal line is and if that knee is down and the ball comes out from there it looks like but once again b.j williamson when they look back what a game from him if this call stands two picks [Music] i'm also wondering uh you know we've had some mic issues with the official game i hope it works so we can at least hear what he what he calls or that's going to be what we're going to have to lift him giving a lot of these coordinators too time to prep for what they're doing moving forward especially if uab's defense is going to be called upon right here how do you defend allen all those thoughts i'm sure the mics are hot right now with both coordinators and they won't be just keeping them out of the end zone we'll be making sure that they don't get an easy field goal here comes the call after louisiana the rolling stands is the call the ruling stands it's a fumble recovered by louisiana and the bulldogs will have the football second possession of double overtime any score wins a field goal a touchdown either one wins it for louisiana tech what a dejected feeling for spencer brown that is ninth and tenth rushing touchdowns of the season today 29 carries 140 yards he thought he was in bill clark thought he was in his offensive lineman standing over him thought he was in [Applause] but the ball came out and it's ruled a fumbled in recovery by louisiana tech but an opportunity for this uab defense right here to say enough is enough it's a unit they love a lot of experience at all three levels they're gonna rely on them [Music] [Applause] 11. and here is the kicker jacob barnes offense would just like to punch it in and end it that way [Applause] this is the fine line of do you trust what has worked which is the right arm of aaron allen or do you say let's play conservative and put it on the right leg of barnes i still think you gotta play football yeah and the way that they haven't been able to run the football all season long 24 carries today for 50 yards they just haven't been able to do it and i mean are you are you confident enough from jacob barnes to kick a 42-yarder just one miss all season it came today another handoff to tucker once again right into the middle of that line and chris mull was there to turn him back and there's your answer chris they are confident in their kicker they're going to put the game on his shoulders two run plays in a row right there third and long i would expect a third run play right here but we've said that before and skip holtz has pulled a trick out of his bag but i would expect to run here and line up for three third down and nine the ball marked at the 24 yard line from here it would be a 41-yard attempt important with aaron allen's legs for this uab defense to stay gap sound know your responsibility don't allow three to pull the ball and run for it um a timeout called they were just trying to draw uab offside you wonder if now on third down skip is going to kick the field goal here in case there's an issue with the snap [Applause] you've seen this backfire on coaches sometimes when you know all you needs a field goal and you just kind of sit on it it doesn't always work out but when you've got a kicker and a kicking family like jacob barnes and his older brother jonathan who's the all-time leader in field goals here at louisiana tech i think you're pretty confident that he's going to be able to get the job done he's still on the sideline though looks like they might run a third down play here he's all by himself on the other side of the field getting his reps in i said right leg earlier forgot he was a lefty so what do you do if you skip holes third down and nine you've been very conservative on first and second then thank you you stay with that you did that first and second down i think you gotta double down on third down see if you can get a little crease maybe push forward for a five yard gain help out your kicker but if you ran it on second down like you did expect a similar thing on third tucker again is the running back allen rolling to his right [Applause] and completes it so they'll pick up a few yards as johnson slides down at the 20-yard line and it'll be a 37 or so yard attempt for jacob barnes to try to win this football game uab does have a timeout got there five yards that was wrong with the run call but here we go right hash for jacob money barnes louisiana tech was down by 14 in the second half bill clark i'm out [Applause] officially it'll be the 38-yard attempt i'm sure somewhere older brother jonathan is watching with that program record of 81 career field goals made from 2014 to 2017 barnes came into the day seven for seven he has missed one today two for three this one will officially be from 38 yards this is from right center earlier in the game pushes it to the left just barely this time he'll be on the right half so even more further to the outside let's see if we can get it here if louisiana tech can pull this off they'll be right in the division race jacob barnes from 38 to win it in overtime it is no good wide right we'll play a third in a late flag barnes hit the deck and a flag comes out [Applause] and look at bill clark incensed [Applause] barnes he might be selling it looks like he's walking to the sideline just fine he sold that hit [Applause] right on [Applause] the issue that uav fans are going to have is that it came out so late you're going to make that call you got to do it on the spot especially in a game like this that's gotta be tough for uab fans but i see what the reps are seeing run into the kicker it's right there just a tough tough call two in a row for uab on back-to-back drives so a five-yard penalty brings the ball to the 15-yard line and that's a first down so now the question becomes do you run the field goal team back out there kick it on first down or do you play conservative again but send the offense out he will send the offense back out interesting to me right now you are getting the whatever hash jacob barnes prefers right hash middle left get the ball there alan being a right-handed quarterback very rarely you roll to the left if that's the case expect a run here it is a run tucker down to the 10. [Applause] with a play like that on first down second down let's keep at it no reason to put the kicker on the field if you can punch it in would not be that surprising they call something very similar right here again any score for louisiana tech wins it after uab fumbled at the goal line in the first possession of double overtime tucker wrapped up and it'll be a loss of one i am a little bit surprised barnes has missed two from the right right hash or right middle i would expect unless it's his favorite spot but it hasn't been today i'd expect him to get to the middle at least tyree turner ripped the ball out of tucker's hands real late and credit to this officiating crew for not throwing a flag there cannot be losing your cool here just get to the next play [Applause] it's third down and closer to seven they mark it back at the 12-yard line so that was a loss of two and that hand motion that that aaron allen just gave looked like a center it motion which means let's snap the ball and run to the middle of the field yep that's exactly what he does slides down at the 17-yard line and on fourth down jacob barnes is going to get another chance [Applause] [Music] you can tell how much they trust him i don't think there was a single guy that went over there and talked to him oftentimes when guys were struggling you usually see teammates kind of he's trying to pick him up they trust him let's see if he can get it done 35 yards middle of the field to win it for the bulldogs and it is right down broadway and a halloween winner for louisiana [Applause] buckets from barnes great job by him way to respond very impressive win by this lot tech team pulling the upset today [Applause] really impressive comeback victory for skip holtz and company as barnes gets the ride a little late show right now as they carry barnes off the field credit this lottek the entire team we talked about the coaches and the play calling the response from aaron allen in this offense and we're seeing right there barnes knew it right away happy for him as he responds and seals the deal for his team and skip holds we're talking to him all week he said finally we're finally healthy let's see what we can do bill clark boy another heartbreaker after blowing it last week against louisiana at home losing the 21 game home field winning streak not happy with the officials after the controversial call at the goal line in the first possession of doubled overtime what looked like it could have been a touchdown was ruled a fumble and there's a lot of players on the uab side still milling around on the field yelling toward the louisiana tech players and vice versa a lot of emotion in this game double overtime divisional rivalry but now this division's up for grabs uab had a chance to pretty much end it but they lose for the first time in conference play this season and it all changes now because louisiana tech is only a game back and they would have the tiebreaker they would have the tiebreaker things got a lot more interesting on in the west division even with this loss uab can still respond and they have a lot of control moving forward but latex made things a lot more interesting very intrigued to see who their quarterback's going to be moving forward after this performance by aaron out i would expect it to be him what a great uh great turning point win for lot tech and we're seeing it right here this two-minute drive from aaron allen the drive of the game got smoke harris involved hammered a whole shot in there absolute masterful job at the quarterback position utilizing his legs getting the ball out of his hands and we came into this game thinking that their offensive line was going to be the weakness and the one way to combat that weakness is find your quick passing game early it's a great job by aaron allen i don't want to discredit what luke anthony did as well he did some great things but late in this game aaron allen got got it done would you expect anything less on halloween under a full moon louisiana tech is your winner from max brown and our entire crew i'm chris hassell saying so long from roston for more great college football coverage along with daily studio programming and the latest news and information visit watch stadium
