noon north dakota state is used to seeing nearly 19 000 fans fill the fargo dome seats but there is nothing typical about this 2020 fall season the bison playing their lone only game against central arkansas here this afternoon thanks so much for being with us brian sean and lee timmerman ryan gellner will join us in a moment and for the bison the one opportunity this fall to try to get a game in try to build some excitement but they'll have to do it in front of no fans well they will but the one question brian that was asked to me multiple times leading up to this weekend is why would ndsu go through all of this just to play once well to me the biggest thing is in football you get better by practicing not by playing and by able and for the bison to be able to have this one game they can have a full practice week just like it was a regular fall so they get 20 hours with the coaches all the weight lifting everything so that's the main thing develop the bison hope to develop the younger guys while getting ready for this one opportunity opportunity to see trey lance and some seniors potentially for the last time as well the bison and bears coming up next [Applause] [Music] yeah you can hear the hurt coming baby like it or not we've been waiting while tailgating in the parking lot now that clock is ticking down and boys are ready to go the energy in here's a lecture let's get on with the show get your horns up clean and golden back in town up in the air bring the boys up [Music] a very unfamiliar sight on game day here in fargo an empty parking lot overcast day about 50 degrees with just player families only in attendance and scouts 20 nfl teams represented by 20 nfl scouts here today as well as they are separated throughout the building and about maybe 25 to 30 central arkansas fans as well brian sean lee timmerman back with you north dakota state has won the toss the buys to deferred and central arkansas will have the football first and braylon smith and company will get the first crack to see if uh they can maybe get this offense on a little bit better of a roll more of a role than it has through the first three games albeit two of those three games have been victories in the come from behind category special teams has been a little bit of a roller coaster ride so far for uca had a punt blocked for a touchdown but also returned a punt for a touchdown there was a 22-yard field goal missing an extra point missed last week against missouri state as well and you're looking at the second year head coach matt 16-0 in a national championship in his first season as the head man for the bison you mentioned special teams brian and i think the bison feel in this head-to-head matchup special teams they have a huge advantage today hope to take advantage of that by being basically the more disciplined team and execute better on special teams ndsu thinks it'll be really to its advantage in this contest against the bears jake reinholds will do the honors junior kicker played in the season opener and then missed pretty much the rest of the season peterson farm seed kickoff kickoff your planting season with peterson farm seed it's a touch off in an open man out of the backfield and positive first play as jack short makes the reception he is cut down by dawson weber after a pickup of eight well the bison saw pressure smith saw it coming from his left side his tight end just a little bit of a blocking release to the flat did a good job of finding him and this is an offense that will want to play quick they will show a lot of tempo especially on positive plays play action akira crossley tyler hudson the intended target both receivers in the same area and that is incomplete josh hayes on the coverage for the bison central career rushing yards the two receivers luann winningham and tyler hudson very dynamic combined for 105 catches and 20 touchdowns one year ago they have both made one hand grabs this year as well so yeah they can make the spectacular catch smith flushed out throws across the middle at high looking for hudson smith potentially could have run for that first down instead it's a three and out for central arkansas but smith is not a running quarterback when you see rpo this is a team that wants the rpo to pass not run pass option for the run so so he will not just take off in a designed quarterback run very often for head coach nathan brown central arkansas kind of a clunky offensive performance last week against missouri state 177 total yards lowest in the d1 era for the bears first punt from searing hughes forward and that one will bounce at about the 30 and go out of bounds at the 28 yard line our first look at trey lance the sophomore quarterback out of marshall coming off a record-breaking season 28 touchdown passes no interceptions and 287 pass attempts also ran for 1100 yards and 11 scores as well carson shooting port l volson very experienced line up front the new man is zach kubis receivers christian watson and phoenix sproles coming off tremendous campaigns as well play action for lance surveys and fires back the far side of the field and incomplete looking for christian watson good coverage that time by robert rochelle well his first look was to the left on a combination route with uh gindor gindorff rather and sproles they were covered he knows he has one-on-one coverage on the back side tried to go back over there but that's the one thing that trade lance did so well last year he read very very well and didn't put himself in poor positions very often with the football back to the i formation here on second and ten stretch play to the outside and kofi looking for roon to run tries to get around the edge but not able to do so j.w jones good pursuit will take him down for no game take a look at that central arkansas defense nathan brown head coach really likes his guys up front jvs brown 37th career game jw jones nathan grant austin norris very good up front robert rochelle being looked at by the nfl scouts that are here along with the kid j.w jones who made that first tackle he is on the has gotten caught the eye rather of the nfl will spread it out here with four wide and central arkansas showing some pressure and the bears will bring pressure that's when they try to make things happen here they come lance hangs in there fires a wide open man down the field and it's just overthrown phoenix sprole's defender had fallen down on the turf and it would have been a touchdown head of enable to be connected nodak insurance company replay sproles just on a sprint up the field and after his defender falls down lance is trying to stay in there as long as he could and he did and he took a shot got the ball down field but he couldn't quite get it you know if lance could have one more half a count that would have been a completed touchdown but hey the bears really brought pressure straight up the middle raja nelson was also running a deep cross where that pressure came from but also lance couldn't see him didn't have time to see it either here at wegner on for the punt kind of a low liner that will take a bison hop at the 25 and hudson who returned to punt for a touchdown is smothered on the play and taken down by cole jacob and central arkansas will have the football when he come back two minutes gone here in the first quarter no score [Music] both teams going through and out on their first offensive possessions uca back out there and starting this drive at the 25. smith to throw again flushed out and incomplete a little bit high for gear crossley good coverage on the play by jackson henke well the bison ran a little stunt there you see lane tucker number 92. he was one of the guys that came on the inside helps bring some pressure up this bison defense he'll have a lot of new names in it but they're very talented athletes smith a little shovel pass to crossley and he's got a little room took a big shot at the 30 after a pickup of five yards there's been bartholomew coming back to lay the wood i think tucker got a little bit piece of him took him kind of out of his rhythm as a runner moved his feet around and then barty let him have it oku played the first four games last year had an injury and missed the rest of the season he's from well he's from africa originally but shiloh christian in bismarck is where he played his high school ball substitute after central arkansas changed out tailbacks [Applause] smith will roll out again and behind his intended target it is complete to mitchell perkinson but he's about a yard short of the first down perkins who just couldn't keep his feet he's a junior i mean there's nobody there to tackle him right away his body was just out of position and able to try to fall forward so we still do not have a first down yet in our game today perkinson originally from the state of arkansas started out his career at oklahoma state as a walk-on north dakota 46 players on the roster from the state of arkansas use four boy a booming punt down to the five and it takes a central arkansas hop and will be down at about the eight yard line well done by hughes ford a booming punt of almost 60 yards we'll step aside flies and have the football when we come back 11 21 to go in the first quarter [Music] a number of north dakota state players have gone on to play professionally you see carson wentz john crockett derek tusca [Applause] recently called up to the 53-man roster of the broncos ben ellison has one career start for the jacksonville jaguars as a free agent this season and we know for sure that list will grow with dylan raiden's what we don't know is if it'll grow with a guy calling the plays yet that was the first carry of the day for seth wilson who remains in the backfield and wilson has not played in a game since the national championship back in january of 2019. give to christian watson on the fly sweeping carries is what tyler roll mentioned to us this week lance hanging in there and now he lost the football it's still lose since central arkansas has it at the 14-yard line i think it was darren it comes out so it was davenport that caused the turnover this will be a real good look at how he reaches out with that left hand and gets it away from lance jabias brown the all southland second teamer from a year ago falls on it for the recovery and that is the 11th turnover forced already this season in just over three games by this bearish defense that is very aggressive up front it's a defense that has had a couple scored a couple of touchdowns rochelle had a scoop and score matt um yeah matthews had a scoop and score as well too gear crossley got a couple yards before he is wrapped up on the play costner ching in there along with james kaser it was interesting in talking with bison coaches this week about this central arkansas offense and every one of them said i don't know why they don't run the ball anymore don't tell them we said that but you know they're trying to establish some things on on the ground but yeah this is a team that when it has gone to the ground this year it has been somewhat successful most of the time it's braylon smith through the air smith designed to run this time bison bringing pressure smith able to get a couple more to the 11-yard line jackson hank another tackle thank you pre-season all-american the junior from parker river north dakota led the team and tackles last year from that middle linebacker spot and and uh the thing i like about jackson is he'll be the first to tell you hey i'm never gonna win a running contest on who's the fastest but you talk about a kid that knows defense knows how to play it and knows how to work angles he's hit third and seven here for the bears smith pocket collapses and he's buried back at the 15-yard line gigler was one of the guys there but you just can't live in the pocket i i know that smith wants to stay there but i just don't think he'll be able to live in the pocket today and there's some big pressure coming up front no dak insurance company replay another stunt beagle playing off his man but it was a cross on the right side that helped kind of create the confusion and then bieger bigler played off to get the tackle hayden ray on for the field goal and he's able to connect from 32 head coach played played quarterback at uca from 2006 to 2008. well he didn't play it he thrived as the quarterback owns all the he's a three-time all-american threw for well over 10 000 yards 100 touchdowns so when you talk about quarterbacks for this program their head coach is the man it's actually a payton award finalist back in 2008 was an invite to the senior bowl in 2009 had a couple of free agent tryouts in the nfl as well but i thought we saw the bison defense and the pressure that it can apply on that third down play really come into play hughes ford will angle this one towards finally thrive in that slot position another one as we mentioned him earlier is raja nelson wearing number 17 a couple of really young guys that the bison quite frankly you know with few exceptions over the years have kind of struggled to find a dominant player in that slot spot rolling on the field stands first down nothing there that you can overturn based on we looked at you talked about roger nelson minnesota mr football finalist out of lakeville north high school confident mature is how tyler roll described him and he played wide receiver running back db and his senior you had to play quarterback why not guy's done everything in his career 39-8 career record when he was at lakeville north so the bison pick up a first down up to the 46-yard line kobe johnson taken down immediately cameron godfrey crashing down from his safety position he's already starting pretty close to the line but yeah godfrey's listed as the free safety but if you don't think you can physically handle a gap power what how do you what do you need to do to beat it well you need to beat it with speed off the edge and that's what godfrey the sophomore was able to do on that particular play coming around on the right side again power is again is a play that the bison thought would work well today looking trying to set up a screen flag comes in behind his intended target there's a hole looking for adam colfield [Applause] if you want me to guess i'll guess snatch jensen this would back up the bison if nathan brown decided to accept the penalty back holding 36. offense number 67. penalty has been declined brings up third down brown decides to decline the penalty instead of insurance company replay check the bottom of your screen but the guy they're talking about is on the top of the screen that's where the hold comes from you just saw him kind of reach across maybe grab under the top of that jersey top of the shoulder pads nathan brown asked this week about how you match up with north dakota state's offensive line goes look the defensive line is the strength of our team i feel like we have a good game plan and our guys will be up for the challenge so far the bears have been on big plays this year look for the pressure nope no pressure coming it's max coverage lance fires looking for christian watson who went up high was a little bit out of his reach and incomplete malik wilson coming back to make a play on the football if eisen will have to punt it away i think watson will tell you that he jumped just a little bit early no he's kind of at the top of his top of his uh jump tried to high point that ball and just didn't bring it in but lance had plenty of time because there was no pressure on that particular play the bison front five held up well back into his linebacker position and then the safety rolled right down into man coverage so that was a whole bunch of stuff for smith to try to digest before the snap smith will drop back again and tight coverage jackson hanke right on top of it intended target with jared barnes transfer from the university of arkansas that's the third and long coming up for the bears let's take a look at the just not been able to get on track so far but again we talked about it 3 700 yards last year but his career completion percentage is still over 62 so they know what this guy can do bison going with just three down linemen here in third and long different look and they're bringing pressure smith is able to complete the pass to perkinson but well short of the first down and here comes the punting move yeah the three down look was certainly different but then you saw kazer come off the nearside edge short this one takes a hop at the 45 and unfortunately for central arkansas it rolls inside the he tripped because davis harrison one of the the nickel guys comes in you see harrison right there he goes for it and misses but there is a whole lot of wide open space that is not happening bison have been in third and long a lot here today [Music] [Applause] lance trying to step away trying to get away but it's terrain matthews again coming back to make the tackle and the bison go three and out [Applause] matthews comes on a sprint it's going to come right into your and miss him see lance steps up matthews overruns the play but when lance has to stop matthews has enough time to use his speed to come from behind and pull him down for another punt this one his best effort deep hunt tyler hudson has to retreat all the way to his only six yard line he gets what he can up to about the 36. well wagner's not on the watch list for punter of the year and he just showed why it's pretty good leg there expenses piling up this semester whether that's that new laptop college books or a much that'll move the sticks for the bears destin talbert on the stop for ndsu not sure if tony pierce was supposed to have the inside rush or if he tried to make an adjustment on his route pierce is the guy right here on the outside the defensive end he went in allowing the quarterback to go out central arkansas going quickly a couple yards on the pickup up to the 29-yard line for crosstalk that being said on the previous play a really nice adjustment there by the junior smith 44 career touchdown pass is now fifth all time but again last week he had career lows and yards and completion percentage smith running for his life again and this time has some room to the outside but closing quickly and making the stop is kazer very active here will bring up third and fourth well the bison are really trying to put the pressure on the offensive line with a number of stunts there there has been very few uh a plays where there has not been some type of a cross action that time the two defensive tackles were in there making a move garrett was one of them number 96 central arkansas or four on third down so far today [Applause] smith on the crosser caught by winningham but short of the first down another excellent tackle in space by kaiser well you're trying to get kaser out of position but he's not out of position very often nodak insurance company replay here's the shallow little drag you hand off to the middle and caser comes up gets the shoulder in there i was talking with grant olson his position coach talking about james and he said hey this kid knows how to play football if we put him at running back i promise you he'd be a really good running back talking about having to switch positions another good point sierra news ford sending this one down inside the nothing central arkansas nathan grant got in there to make that stop for the bears they've been pretty stout up front so far also you got to get a little shout out on that play to brandon myers he took on a couple of players sorry not myers make that nathan grant third and six here for the bison three receivers in the formation pressure coming on lance he hangs in there and looking for zach matheson overthrows the tall receiver out of tampa and lance again now just one of seven so far to start this game and when you're talking about targets that's the tallest one out there zach mathis at six foot six and zach could even make a play on the ball it was just way too high mathis had a brother jacob played ole miss in southern florida five receptions last year missed about three games in the regular season and did not play in the playoffs due to injury backed up deep in his own end zone we'll do what he can here as he angles this one towards the sideline and this is going to give central arkansas some pretty good field position 46-yard line with mathis wearing number zero that is a new rule in college football this year as well he was number 17 last year but the powers that be decided that players can wear zero now nathan brown said this week the head coach at central arkansas how much they were looking forward to this trip central arkansas piecing together this hodgepodge schedule they got a couple of home and homes against missouri state and eastern kentucky three fbs opponents and this game in fargo the bears will also return to fargo in 2023 with the bison returning a game to conway in 2025. smith pump fake now looking deep has a man open it is through the hands of his intended target and incomplete winning ham had a beat on it but could not haul it in destin talbert out there on coverage got beat a little bit on the double move no dak insurance company replay here's talbert trying to catch up if i tell you from what we've seen on tape of that young man this year you expect him to make this catch even though he was trying to stretch out and get it and make it here but he has made those types of catches he was held without any receptions last week against missouri state but had two receiving touchdowns in early september against uab had a great season going last year until he broke his arm smith stepping up in the pocket again gonna take off and run anki able to come off his block and take him down low after pick up a four nothing in the to run aspect of that play at all smith was just looking surveying downfield didn't see where he had any player open just got what he could after after that third and six coming up for the bears lies in bringing pressure again smith trying to step away stays on his feet and he's got a first down diving across the 30 down to the 29-yard line and now the bears will try to go quick but julian wood darcy was on kind of a little bit of a delayed blitz number 20 you'll see come in right there and then he loses his footing which allows the run for the first down room up the middle this time for cameron myers nice change of pace back for central arkansas much bigger 6-1 205. he and crossley have gotten the bulk of the handoffs this year hasn't been a very deep run back running back group this time not much for maya's turn back and taken down by costner ching at the line of scrimmage no gain ching earned his starting job at that nose guard position was recruited as a tight end out of a nine-man program and castlewood south dakota came up here switched positions said earlier this week i have come to the realization that i'm not going to catch the ball or hold it anymore i'm fine with that let's play some d [Applause] lies and bring four smith dumping it off boy good play up by jasir watson such a tremendous breakout sophomore campaign led the team with 34 receptions as hughes ford will put the toe to it and watson will call for the fair catch at the four yard line bobcats scoring recap seven plays 23 yards or central arkansas set up on the short field after the short punt from garrett wegner hayden ray has been able to connect on a couple of field goals here yeah the bison helped both of those scoring drives if you will the short punt on this one you remember the turnover on the first one that that was a minus one scoring drive but yet the fumble happened so deep and bison territory that's how the bears were able to get the first points quick throw out to watson got a couple of blocks on the edge and watson switched out of bounds by a trio bears after a gain of 5. bison thought some screens or bubbles or those types of plays might be effective today try to get a little two-on-two situation which is what they had right there pass out to watson with phoenix sproles in the blocking position two tight ends i formation here on second five and play action for lance throwing on the run and making the sliding reception as hunter loopkey has enough for a first couple of blocks where you see sproles and watson trying to line up on the outside lance is trying to get there he's a little bit tripped up the bison didn't think they'd use trey a bunch in the run dom jones in with this defense and a number of young kids who are have a lot of talent with the opportunity to play he's on the two deep at free safety and jones one of those few players they've been able to get out of georgia here recently and those guys are working out so far delayed hand off just your packs in on another tackle it's crossley excuse me cameron myers gets across the ten to the fourth the bears just 63 total yards of offense north dakota they've been able to get it going here in the second quarter up to 129 total yards smith to the air and it is complete and enough for a first down to the 25-yard line tyler hudson makes the reception and he was covered very well you talk about putting the ball in a spot in a catchable spot for your guys buys and bring four smith under pressure and he goes down back at the 12-yard line javier derricks and lane tucker able to put the pressure on a couple of youngsters before half so you talk about this bison team and you go back i'll just jump back to last summer when a bunch of people would ask you questions about ndsu and and all the especially on the offensive side all those guys that graduated and how they were going to be and my answer always was that you know these this team is super talented they're just guys you haven't heard of yet that was on the offense last year this year i think the very same thing can be said about this defense this is a very talented and a lot of them young group of athletes you just don't know them yet you haven't gotten a chance to to learn you know about you know the dawson webers and the destin talberts and the jazeera cox and those types of guys the bears will go with a running play game of a couple and another timeout quickly taken by north dakota state as myers gets another carry i know i mentioned a bunch of defensive backs but you can say the same about the defensive end group that's there's some solid talent on some young kids in that defensive end room time now for from the nfl but there will there is rather no shortage of watch parties uh for this particular game obviously this building is more or less empty so people are having their tail grady tailgating groups gathering in different places around the state and around the nation i know out in bismarck the civic center has a big watch party they're they're watching from the scoreboard on the inside rayleigh smith is going to keep it and he dives ahead to the 27 but did not get a first down so north dakota state will use its final timeout and force a punt with 107 to go until half well smith you talked about it not really known as a runner lt but he is the leading rusher for central arkansas today 33 rushing yards and the bears only 32 passing yards so far here today third down has also not been a good down it's 30 on the season for the bears just three of 15 last week at home against missouri state forward the excuse eisen brought a few extra bodies henderson will call for the fair catch and we'll make it at the 30-yard line with exactly one minute to go see how aggressive tyler roll wants to get here well you don't take the timeouts to kneel on it do you i wouldn't think so especially when it has not especially that first quarter a thing of offensive beauty at least in the second quarter the bison able to get some things done on the ground cody johnson in the backfield with lance in the gun robert rochelle back into the game for central arkansas certainly good news for the bears plants waiting now he's going to bomb it deep sproles could not haul it in as the ball hung up just a little bit and rochelle able to make a play on the football and break it up nice to see rochelle back in the game he did walk off with a little bit of a an injury of some type earlier nodak insurance company replay rochelle is able to close back on the ball and just take away a long potential pass play to phoenix sproles lance trying to set up a screen but central arkansas had that thing read all the way if katie brown was all over cofield and that'll bring up third and long yeah there was no fool in brown brown on that particular play he tried to get the defensive line to rush and put some false pressure on your quarterback boy but brown was covered him like a linebacker rebound lineman with jeremiah gray standing up on the end lance plenty of time behind his intended target watson and broken up by deandre lamont and the bison unable to take advantage of getting the football back here late in this half the long pass play broken up no chance for the screen to work then a long drag across the middle right at your first down sticks and as you mentioned brian the ball just a little bit behind him so the defender is able to make the play on central arkansas hanging in here they've done a nice job defensively and nathan brown said this week we think we might have the advantage we've been able to work out the kinks they have not and we've been battle tested hudson called for the fair catch and then drop it after you touch the football so central arkansas will have it at the 22. i'm surprised he put the hand up there because it was a low line drive kick and he does have the potential and has this year run the ball all the way back central arkansas down 13. it was a defensive touchdown and then a punt return by hudson for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the bears ahead receiver provided an invalid fair catch signal however the ball is dead when it's possessed first down arkansas state well the bears are not ahead on the scoreboard but you'd have on and made a nice adjustment to pick up the first down average is almost six yards a run smith will drop back and now just throwing it up nobody over there for central arkansas still within the confines of the tackle box i believe so even though there was no nobody there there shouldn't be grounding eagler putting the pressure on for ndsu this week i asked him about the schedule i said how did you handle the schedule it goes whenever dr t our athletic director said how about this game we just i just nodded my head and said yes well you figured there's only one team on a 10-game schedule that was on the original schedule and that was the first game of the year against austin pete otherwise yeah dr teague had to find nine other games he was able to do it he said together with three fps games and dr t even said this week we may even add an 11th game if we can get one down the road here what did have to have one game rescheduled supposed to play arkansas state last month cancelled that is being played next saturday instead but i was told though that one of the reasons they were able to do this was just the relationship they have with the regional hospital that is located right next to campus in terms of all the testing and protocols and making sure that players could play raylen smith is going to wind up and fire it deep into traffic and it is intercepted by dawson weber first career pick for the junior out of elk grove california and that will be the end of the first half [Music] [Applause] well that was certainly a free safety type of interception playing that deep center field job [Applause] at the tail end of it high point it take it away from the receiver tutsi also right there and good double coverage nice job dawson weber last play of the half let's go down offensively well yeah we gotta do a better job of making the routine plays we got to uh complete a couple footballs uh balls you know they're playing a whole bunch of man coverage a lot of back to the ball defense we can't be afraid to just take off and take some yards at the quarterback spot but i think we'll we'll get some things fixed in the halftime and come back out ready to go defensively it to six right now at halftime for the offenses early on especially for the bison offense they you could tell that they hadn't played a game in over nine months basically for for uh this ndsu offense but they started to get some things going there and put together a pretty decent second quarter after a not so great first quarter let's get right into the highlights here between north dakota state and central arkansas trade a couple of possessions the bison backed up and trey lance in here fumbles the ball a little adversity early on good thing for code green though is that they were backed up against their own goal post and held central arkansas to just three yeah that's right central arkansas opening up their drive in the red zone but code green getting the job done holding them to that three nothing lead here now buys them back on the move trey lands his first completion of the day to braylon henderson his only completion in the first quarter there to braelyn henderson they looked at it but it was it was good and he gets another ball batted down bison turned the ball back over to central arkansas and here we see braelyn smith rushing using his legs something he didn't succeed with last week yeah not too much 12 rushing yards entering and then central arkansas is able to tack on another field goal what does chris climate always say field goals won't beat you absolutely second quarter now three nothing for central arkansas and uh trey lance here with another completion connects with hunter lubke this was where the offense really started to find some rhythm and then you see trey lance hit josh babich in the end zone bison taking the lead here a 7-6 lead over central arkansas as the bison start to kind of find their groove here again on the move trey lance now his first design run of the day yeah we we waited really until the second quarter for the quarterback run game to get going here with trey was really just being a pocket passer for the most part having to create a little bit but now we see they get the quarterback run game going and it gets ndsu into scoring territory trey lance again showing that physical running ability as he gets another first down ends up in another in a field goal for the bison as they make it a 10-6 lead ndsu good to see jake reinhold's get get some points on the board and then here at the end of the half central arkansas looking for that last little ditch effort a little momentum going into half uh but dawson webber there to play center field he comes away with the interception and that gets us to 10-6 here as we take a look at the north dakota certified seed producers that report here those numbers are not eye-popping but it's what you would expect for a team that hasn't played a football game in nine months yeah ndsu obviously not jumping off the stat sheet here but central arkansas hanging with them the problem is everything we're saying right now is central arkansas is hanging with the bison yeah and that makes it dangerous because that provides confidence for central arkansas coming out into the second half and what we've heard from central arkansas head coach is that if we're in it in the fourth quarter we're confident that we can we can make something happen so that's their their whole game plan is to just hang around until that fourth quarter and try to make something happen here in fargo got up there did he make the the hit the tackle no but he disrupted the play by getting in there and taking that kid have to jump out to get over him nathan brown is not too happy with that second quarter and now a 12-point deficit smith hanging in there firing deep man open downfield is winning now but he makes the catch in bison territory and gets down to the 35-yard line [Applause] well there was going to be no safety help because their michael tutsi comes on the delayed blitz there's the move from winningham hey you do not have anybody behind you you have to catch up but that is only the second grab of the day by the big two hudson had one catch in the first half that's the first catch from winningham so far the bison doing a pretty good job on those two smith flares it out for crossley and overshooting his man good coverage by michael tutsi will bring up second down that's all been thrown a little bit longer it might have been a touchdown for the bears i think he was trying to save himself because caesar was breathing on him pretty hard the bison came off the edge with a linebacker blitz let's take a look at braylon smith's look out in the flat here's here but gonna run some good blocking in front and lance lowers the shoulder and is close to a first down in central arkansas territory at the 46. well carson schuning just did something on that play that tanner volson was so good at that's the center number 59 snap and then pull to get out in front provide the one block that lance needs to put his shoulder down and pick up the first down but that even though it looks easy it is not carson schuning the senior from ralla [Applause] good pocket this time across the middle open man at the 30 and the reception is made by zach mathis [Applause] five receptions last year for the 6-6 sophomore out of tampa well what you don't see is christian watson on the right side running a deep play there's the little square it the safety has to honor watson on parents have done a really good job in their lateral pursuits davis harrison in on another tackle along with malik wilson i thought logan jessup did a nice job too the defensive end of not getting [Applause] lance keeps backside wide open hunter loopkey touchdown this style of play has been so effective the last couple of years with ndsu because you're showing the eyes of the defense off to the defense's right the offense is left and all of a sudden you sneak from the back you have them wide open in the flat loopkey is able to score this touchdown ryan holtz adds the extra points and north dakota state back in front again with 7 35 to go and the rochelle penalty a huge part of it don't go anywhere 7 35 to go here at the dome [Music] who has an update on an injured bison wide receiver [Music] scary situation on the bison sideline phoenix sproles one of ndsu's top receivers left the field in a wheelchair with his leg immobilized phoenix in tears as they left the sideline and obviously some concern right now on north dakota state sideline if we have an update we will update you guys as we know something it's the first international bank and trust sideline report back to you guys all right thank you so much ryan we certainly wish the best for phoenix sproles really good sophomore season here is the play we believe this happened on seth wilson's run take a look at number 11. so you have to block if you're if you're with ndsu and that's what spoles is doing on this play wilson comes in and the man behind him that is jones so that's a lot of momentum going against that right leg and that knee that gets planted down into the turf central arkansas back to work smith boy nice catch by camargo bringing it in one-handed and strong running by the big tight end michael sutzie makes the tackle after a gain of nine margot a touchdown reception against uab last month a little bit of a rollout from smith you know that's one thing though you can tell he's a veteran quarterback he is a guy that you can't rattle crossley oh he's in trouble [Applause] brennan cook [Applause] he was the guy that kind of uh smith read on that last particular play and this time cook makes up for it oh second and one now it's gonna be third and eight athletic young sophomore defensive end from illinois had a strange injury last year to play to delaware at three tackles of sack in a forced fumble and then had a weird elbow injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year smith designed run not gonna get there jackson henke making the stop after a gain of one [Applause] you know i think the i think pre-snapped the bison took away what smith really wanted to do on that play they motioned a man out josh hayes first went to the wide side guy to try to open up one of their best receivers and then tutsi i think it was motion there in the bottom of your screen that was the match-up i thought initially might be a pass play to try to get a safety on your one of your white outs it didn't work braylon henderson with the fair catch at the 33 and the defense gets a three and out from the bears with 5 42 to go north dakota state up to 237 rushing yards today 144 of those belong to trey lance that was not necessarily in the game plan to have lance be required to run the ball that many times today lance is going to run again not as much room this time ask jensen trying to set the edge but again it's jeremy matthews coming in to make the tackle yeah matthews actually beat the play before lance could get to the block you were talking about jensen was in pretty good position but matthews nobody got the second level guy or slowed him down he made a beautiful read and had a really good angle to the ball dream matthews with 10 tackles eight of those solo stops today for the bears lance to gindorff in the flat steps around one man and gindorff is across the 45-yard line and has a first down and there's another bear down that's rochelle he's getting up but just slowly gindorff last year 10 receptions six of those touchdowns that tight end room in general lt 37 catches overall 16 touchdowns just among the tight end group last year well ben allison in that uh in that room ellison making the jacksonville jaguars practice squad actually made a start in week two for the jags oh room to run to the outside wilson trying to sneak away with a little bit of a stiff arm but instead of tj campbell making the tackle after a pickup of eight there's that first down production the bison in the second half are used to having throughout the course of their long run here wilson pops through but he but he does a fine job at just keeping that space that first initial hit yeah the tackle was made by campbell but it wasn't until it was eight yards later well it's a formation lance gonna keep it nothing there plugged up in the middle that was the big man austin norris the 6'5 senior out of conway coming up to turn him back now third and about four coming up from the 49. offense this afternoon lance's numbers 15 of 30 for 149 yards two scores and the one interception he's also run 15 times for 143 yards and two scores as well well when you consider he started i think what one of six so the 15 to 30 actually looks a little better than that when you consider the start that last pass that he threw that out over to henderson now that was nice credit to the uca defense they've been tough up front and off to the outside room to run for kobe johnson and he is out of bounds at the 23-yard line but that'll be enough for a first [Applause] down i think you're right though brian about the defensive line here the bears today because how many of these runs have been power type a-gap powers not very many of them bison have had a lot of success in plays like that trying to get to the edge north dakota state celebrating another national championship eight in the last nine years for this program yeah the line is there because the ones on top are the d2 championships the ones in the bottom of the fcs championships wilson bouncing off a tackler wilson showing a nice burst through the line and he's going to be close to another first down at the 13. kaden brown was thinking there for a minute hey i'm going to make a play in the backfield here but well i tell you seth wilson bounced right off of him and helped force central arkansas into a second timeout no dac insurance company replay well we said it in the first half when he had a couple of carries really nice to see that young man back out here playing and being productive just that freshman season was not going to play was going to red shirt and then late in the season ndsu got really thin at tail back they pulled his red shirt and he was so productive we had talked about the nearly 200 yards he rushed against sam houston state but then the next year had significant hamstring issue he could never get right decided to only play in the four games so he could preserve his red shirt and then in spring ball last year poor as acl missed all of last season so he really has only played in four games in the last two and a half years it's been a long time for this guy and the give will go to loopkey great blocking he's got a touchdown on the ground and that should put it away here in fargo [Music] [Applause] well it took a while but this was the type of offensive line play i thought we were going to see all day but the bison oh just a fine job loopkey used to being the lead blocker this time he gets the touchdown extra point added by reynolds a loopy guy that's used to carrying the football 3 000 all-purpose yards in high school was a two-time state wrestling champion three-time all-conference in baseball about wilson with the block yep wilson was the lead blocker in that particular place are they the case so they switch roles yeah raiden's with a nice block a downfield there uh block you're going to get from cole jacob here's a good look from the end zone nash jensen at the point of attack a little bit of a kick out there from uh cordell bolson you know when you make the x's and o's on the wet board and you design the play it looks just like that [Applause] return to the 25 under two minutes to go tell you the bears have done some really good things today though they've got a they're not going to win or it doesn't appear so at this point unless something really crazy happens but they have a lot to be a lot to be proud of if this ends up being a loss it's still the best game that these guys have played this year offensively and they have a lot to build off braylon smith by far his best performance of the season [Applause] pressure coming on smith gets it out to hudson he's taken down immediately at the 30-yard line through the first three games and the people i talked with down in conway they were like this just isn't has it been smith well today he has been if he was missing he's back smithfire's on the run and it's intercepted guess who michael tutsi led the missouri valley i thought it was price was it oh it was 23. jayden price was his first career pick [Applause] he's 25 it's 23 and it's jaden price the sophomore coming up with the pick the bison erupt off the bench i'm assuming that that may be what the penalty is after price picks the pass from smith well jaden that'll help you forget that one though that one drive where you were called with the penalty got beat for the time during the return sideline interference north dakota state penalties 15 yards from the end of the run north dakota state keeps the football first down david braun telling us this week lt jayden price has just been super productive in fall camp he just finishes on the football he's had a number of interceptions in practice and there he is making a big play here at the end of this game well i think you asked coach brown the question uh name an athlete who is most improved from august to now that's the guy he picked right there number 23. i feel good for that guy mercadel over there the senior he said in practice he's he's just been picking off passes and he's been finishing at the ball and north dakota state hasn't been the cleanest game in the world but we'll walk out of here with an 11 point win shut it down for a while and then get ready for the spring season they hope which is set to start on february 21st in the history of college football only two programs have longer winning streaks than what the bison have right now because yale along with ndsu had 237 gamers this is number 38. washington back in 08 to 2014 had 40 in oklahoma back in the 50s has the record with 47th straight lance will take one more knee and that'll be the end of the road here for dylan rayden he's played his final snap in a bison uniform before he looks ahead to his professional career there are some others that may not put it on that helmet on again for the bison as well as north dakota state will walk out of here with an 11-point win over a central arkansas team that came in here and gave him everything they could handle arkansas ndsu and the north dakota department of transportation ask you to please drive safely on your way home be a week when asked in his weekly media availability and he and his family have some very important life decisions to make ryan gelner is now standing by with north dakota state head coach matt ents matt it certainly wasn't the cleanest game you've played since your time at head coach but a win is a win you're exactly right and uh i'm appreciative to our kids uh everything that they've had to go through uh going all the way back to march 13th which was our last normal day we had here i couldn't be more excited yeah of course we can continue to get better we will get better but excited for the win especially for our seniors talk about tomorrow you'll wake up and there won't be a football game to prepare for how weird is this for you and for these kids moving forward that this is it for this year well i don't i don't know if it really sunk in yet i think we've been so focused on this one opportunity uh i know we're going to treat the the remainder of the month kind of like the month of may so we're going to already start our ramp up for the spring you'll address a group of seniors in the locker room that played their final game for north dakota state yeah yeah there's a there's a a couple or a fair number of guys who played their last game and i appreciate them sticking with me sticking with us helping lead this team you know part of the reason why we're as good as we are is a match-up with arkansas state next saturday afternoon brian shawn lee timmerman back with you thank you for joining us here this afternoon on the kbly kfyr bison television network and lt we came into this game we had no idea what to expect how this was going to go it's been very unique they were going to be fans there weren't a lot of fans and yes it was not the cleanest performance maddens kind of alluded to that in his post game interview with ryan but at the same time they got it done it's a win and now it's time to try to find out what the schedule looks like for the spring well i think what coach enz was talking about their work you know we'll treat later like may and really even though this is the fall because of the way 2020 has played out the bison have viewed it and have treated it like it is the spring so instead of a green gold scrimmage to finish things off they had a real football game that counts against a real good opponent as uh central arkansas comes in here plays and you accomplish some things along that goal but it's it's it's odd to have to try to think of it as the spring instead of the fall because the fall is going to happen in february to continue this whole strange world in which we live right now it's been unique to say the least we can take a look at some of your final stats from today's contest from the north dakota certified seed producers the rushing yards for north dakota state picked up a lot in the second half south wilson had some productive runs trey lance did most of the damage on the ground well i don't think and we talked about it while it was happening the bison did not want to have to rely on trey lance to be able to run the ball but he needed to run the ball in the context of the way the game was being played out because things didn't open for lukey and wilson and all that until after the bison with lance established things i think he had 143 uh of those 265 rushing yards and uh you know the the time of possession makes that a little bit odd as well but to be honest um it doesn't seem like the bison had 414 total yards today but they did yeah it's true it's right there in front of you it's on your tv but uh but a lot of that has to do with the way the the first half played out as well but the second half you saw a lot of powerful things from ndsu up front and they were able to get it rolling and braylon smith a couple of long touchdown passes and credits with their receivers they made some tough catches in traffic as well as central arkansas had this thing looking a little dicey once we went to the third and fourth quarter you can take a look at some of those first half highlights from today and nothing easy about the first half for either team offensively trey lance getting stripped there by darren davenport yeah that opened up the first scoring of the game but what the bison did do it was actually a minus one yard scoring drive because the field goal attempt so ndsu's defense as they've been known to do at times kept the team out of the end zone gave up the field goals braylon henderson making a nice adjustment here to get a foot down it was reviewed and upheld j.w jones was an active guy today got his hands on that pass he was all over the place in the first half yeah i think number 50 had a solid day and here's smith thinking he's going to get sacked and all of a sudden it opens up and he's able to to pick up some yards on the ground and it was a uh a short punt that helped set up the second score of the game as well for central arkansas both of those scores though field goals peyton ray able to connect again he was a busy guy handling the football today and blocking his next sliding catch and then josh babich open in the end zone as lance connected with him from 13 yards out that was his best pass of the first half he really hit the top of the drop well was in rhythm delivered a nice and really tight ball whereas the play before he showed where lukey had to slide down trey would even say that wasn't a very good pass but this we know he can do he can run track down from behind finally on the play but trey lance was effective running the football today and had most of the big explosive plays in the running game this is on a second and long picks up a first down so the bison when they were backed up needed lance to come through on the ground and they did jake reinhold's able to connect on the short field goal from 27 yards out put ndsu up 10-6 and then braylon smith the heave deep was picked off by dawson weber his first career interception and that took us to the end of the first half north dakota state leading 10-7 i think all of us and everybody watching too was probably going oh that's all the points in the first half i honestly thought the offense would be able to establish the run central's uh defensive line didn't allow that to happen so uh that didn't get roll until later in the game that was one of those things 2lt where you just kept waiting for things to kind of get rolling and it just didn't really happen in that first half for either team no it didn't uh and you don't know why first game a lot of that stuff but uh it did happen and it made things interesting there a little bit in the second half yeah a lot more points and a lot more explosive plays in that second half we'll have those highlights coming up a little hunter it took a little bit for this offense but eventually got things going coach always goes on it he says these four yard two yard runs are going to open up eventually we just got to keep going just had to keep improving our tech techniques throughout the game and sooner or later those our offense will start rolling we'll start scoring points and keep keep the dub it probably didn't feel like it 265 team rushing yards 414 total yards that's a pretty good day's work it was it started out a little slow but in the second half we really got it going so yeah pretty exciting talk about this football team such a weird game where it's the first game but it's also the last game as well yeah it's first game it was senior night we wanted to end in the seniors career on a good note so this game was dedicated to them and can't thank those guys enough for teaching all of us in our classroom the rain so i want you to talk about some of those seniors that offensive line has been good for years some of the best we've seen they paved a lot of holes today they've done that all through their careers yeah dylan raiden's cordell volson nash carson schoening and kubis plus another a bunch of guys that circle in during the game they all do a great job in film study and i mean they open up huge holes for the running backs and they protect awesome for trey so we're really thankful to have those guys you go through a game where there's what 300 people in the crowd when you're used to 18 000 yeah it really makes you appreciate bizarre nation doesn't it it is it was a lot different today and uh i can't wait for spring when uh we get all those fans back so really appreciate it hunter lubke the sophomore fullback two touchdowns today congratulations hunter thank you we will bring in james kaser the nodak insurance player of the game and james with 11 tackles six solos today things kind of out of sorts both offensively and defensively at times during this football game but then again we forget it was your first football game and their third yeah first of all i'd just like to thank my lord and savior jesus christ but yeah it was it was tough right away a little out of groove but once the game got going we started playing well playing fast and playing together you're normally uh not getting your name on the offensive side of the football but a two-point conversion today take us through that yeah someone had to replace uh jimmy football out there james hendricks one of my best friends shout out to you yeah i got the opportunity to run one today got the look that we wanted and got it in same question that i asked hunter about the crowd especially on defense when you only have 300 people in the fargo dome compared to a regular 18 or 19 000 really makes you appreciate what the bison fans bring doesn't it yeah we love our fans here and without them on defense it's tough because they bring the noise and we know that but we had to adapt and adjust and we're thankful we could have our families and friends here to watch today before i let you go i gotta ask you about the flow it's looking good today i appreciate that uh mom if you're watching this i know you don't love it but i'll cut it sometime soon i promise sometimes congratulations on the win the only win of the season now you get some time off before we do it again congratulations no dac player of the game making that transition successfully today to linebacker i was talking with grant olson a little bit about just how and one of the reasons that kaiser is able to move from safety to linebacker is the way that football has changed a little bit we're a lot more pass happy than smash mouth and he said but the point that i thought he'd make this here's the two points that ryan was talking about with uh with caser is that yes our linebacking crew might not be big caser's not jazeers cox is not but there isn't an offense in the country to get better against physically than our offense in practice every day because of what the bison can do on the ground and historically have been such a strong running team so yeah they might not be big but they know how to be physical james kaser is that and uh in the uh the the pressure this week through zoom and all that stuff that we have to do now to to talk with players uh they spent quite a bit of time talking about keiser's hair too so james is like hey i'm in college this is the only time i'm gonna have to be able to do this i might as well do it now because sometimes i need to be in the real world and the real world doesn't like hair like this has a bunch of brothers that play in the ivy league and saint cloud state a very big family very big football family as well not on that same cloud area we'll step aside be back to wrap things up after this 39-28 the final back to wrap things up from here at the fargo dome for our only broadcast of this 2020 fall season north dakota state picking up a victory which will qualify and help them should there be any question marks in playoff discussions yeah following in the spring only 16 teams get in there are 11 automatic qualifiers which means they're only five at large bids and the committee did say that fall games would be factored into that selection process so you never know if this could help them down the road well a win will always help you won't it and that's what the bison got today let's take a look at some of the second half highlights far more big plays in this contest getting it out to josh babich this is the first play to start the second half offensively for the bison babish also the touchdown catch in the first half that's such a beautiful run just that little power move between the two big guys and then the speed the stiff arm and the end zone trey lance dashing 54 yards and then some miscommunication here as destin talbert got lost in coverage and winning ham made a couple of big plays and then again this time tyler hudson was left all along but when this i think it was third and long on this particular play too so what the bison needed it they went back to the ground with their leading rusher from last year leading rusher today ralph's able to get it out across the 30-yard line and then his first career interception took over 300 pass attempts and nick nakwas is going to hang on to that football i am sure raylan smith a little slant out to winningham as a real quick response from the bears this is where the game really got fun there was some back and forth both teams scoring attack there sack there if i should say from tj campbell lance guns this one into zach mathis for a first down back to the ground and down inside getting in the red zone some red zone yardage and this is where lance can just make magic happen getting away from the rush stepping out of some tackles and take it in for a second rushing touchdown of the day getting away from the rush with that physicality that he has really nice catching traffic hudson pulls that down getting hit by price here's a little fade that results in a score and then lance setting this up and lookie left alone on the back side and easy little pitch and catch there and then luke doing it again this time on the ground great blocking up front wilson springs him and almost untouched into the end zone now we've talked about this kind of being like a spring but in store instead of the scrimmage to finish it you uh you have this contest what's one thing we always say during spring ball they don't want to see any injuries well i we saw one today that uh is a little bit of a sad situation or potentially if you will for the bison seth wilson trying to finish a run phoenix sproles making a block and then a mass of people coming and hitting the back of phoenix sproles and then unfortunately sproles left the field on two wheels instead of on two feet he did get up under his own power and just kind of hobbled off but certainly a concern and again we don't know may not end up being anything too terribly serious we certainly hope it isn't for phoenix but certainly not the way he wanted to leave the field today no the optics of the whole thing aren't good so for north dakota state now they we talked to the coaches okay how are you going to do this what are you going to do and they kind of shrug their shoulders like we'll do some more self scout we'll start digging into youngstown a little bit they have a new coaching staff the players they'll get a little bit of time but then they're going to get right back in the weight room and have to get going just like it's an off season like a regular fall camp is going to happen in january sometime in january to get ready for the end of february to go through the gauntlet of what the valley always is a gauntlet yes and it starts with youngstown in february on a sunday yes no less on the 21st because the state wrestling tournament is here so it's unavailable yeah so there you go well we
