[Music] college football on cbs sports network is brought to you by geico welcome to the mountain west and the opener for wyoming and nevada in reno nevada jay norvell in his fourth year is building something here in reno the wolf pack opened their season coming off a bold loss last year but a season in which they were seven and six 19 of their 22 starters are back for nevada and on the other side what a run it's been for craig bowl six years this is his seventh and the last three years three bowl games and three eight win seasons they won the arizona bowl the last time they were on the field and ready to go rich waltz along with aaron murray amanda guerra is with us as well in reno nevada and the mountain west season begins with a kick that goes through the end zone wyoming gets the football first and they will get it at their own 25-yard line and aaron murray these are two really good teams and they have three very good quarterbacks between them two of them with wyoming sean chambers gets the call he didn't finish the season last year the knee injury is all gone and he's ready to go yeah i'm excited to see him obviously we saw what he was able to do running the football last year he's a powerful runner but his development this offseason throwing the football if he's able to incorporate that man oh man is he going to be dangerous this season and he has a terrific running back to work with xavier validate chambers will throw it that's a dart and it's caught there in traffic at the 31-yard line [Applause] gutter gentry the target and he holds on it's a gain of seven second down and three chambers can do it with his arm and he can do it with his legs he is a dangerous runner the offensive line is healthy this year and that's a good sign for wyoming well this offensive line knows that it's going to be a game that's going to carry this offense throughout the year they're ready to take on that responsibility as this pass game grows with chambers struck a season with some young receivers on the outside validates first carry and he sneaks through a hole to get to the 34. he's shy of the first down it'll be third down and about a yard validate ran and he ran a lot last year well over 1200 yards he led the mountain west conference in rushing he had a huge bowl game third one and chambers is swallowed up and dropped and nevada will take over ball is loose nevada says they have it i'm not sure i think it was blown down and that's not a good sign right there with chambers down boy this is a guy who two years ago had a fractured fibula last year a cartilage injury with his knee he's worked so hard aaron to get back and right now the trainers are down and this is an awful sight in reno it just looked like they were doing a little bit of an option out to the right and and just kind of awkwardly was tangled up and hopefully he's okay not looking great right now and obviously you see the emotion all you i mean you mentioned it rick all the hard work that he put in to get healthy for this season to get ready to go all the high expectations he literally was the only player on campus in the month of april he came back and was isolated while all the other students were gone from campus because he told craig bowl that he wanted to get back to a hundred percent he got there he had a really nice camp leading in and on the first series he is down and in plenty of pain right now the training staff of wyoming and it looks like they're going to bring a cart out for him as well levi williams is the backup but certainly everybody who's watching it whether you're a wyoming fan or a nevada fan hoping for the best for sean chambers will return to reno after this this was moments ago all of the hard work for sean chambers to get back from the knee injury last year and in the first series it appears to be a left lower leg injury they were looking at the ankle and he has left the field we'll get you a report as soon as we get any information nick noel will cut it away [Applause] for wyoming there's a flag down it was fourth down and three and this is romeo dubs on the return to the 40 dumps to the 30. breaks a tackle and dubs is gonna go romeo dubs into the end zone the flag though is down oh that's frustrating right there i mean that's a beautiful return but romeo but his buddies encroachment defensively this is going to give wyoming a first down to extend their drive [Applause] timothy davis is our referee here in the mountain west today dubs a terrific weapon one of the best in the mountain west conference but the flag was down and it appeared that nevada was offside and you're right that's why i noted was fourth down in three the penalty should give there were two offside number 11 defense five yards that'll be a first down the holding doing the return will be declined rich waltz along with aaron murray normally when you start a game you ease right into it but first the the injury to sean chambers that's an awful break for wyoming yeah it's tough i mean we've talked about how hard he's worked to get back and you feel bad for the kid and hopefully it's nothing too serious but they do have an experience back up in levi so you know he played well last year we got to cover him in the bowl game and he's had a lot of reps he's a more of a pure passer we'll see what he can do here in the football game and he was expected to get playing time they're going to use both quarterbacks this game just a lot more than i guess they're anticipating for wyoming yeah and williams got a lot of reps with the ones and a lot of reps with the two so he should be ready to roll and he was scheduled as you pointed out aaron he was scheduled to get a couple of series in the second quarter of this game he was dynamite in that arizona bowl he threw for 234 yards he ran for 53 as wyoming beat georgia state in tucson last year so the drive continues at the 39-yard line wyoming first possession of the game and williams in much earlier than he thought he would be fires it into the flat there xavier valida is an outstanding wide receiver as well he had 74 yards of receiving yards the last time these two teams met that was a big win for wyoming up in laramie they wiped out nevada 31-3 nevada's defense there's a lot of talent coming back here yeah and they just got to shut up the outside right now that was the big goal for this defense heading into the season eliminate the big plays down the field a lot of work with these corners and safeties obviously we know about the talent they have up front with peterson and hammond on the on the defensive tackle on end williams quick shot there and validate his hit hard and dropped and that sam hammond one of the captains of this nevada defense the senior came up and popped him and wyoming is going to have to punt again well these are two of the guys we just mentioned don peterson and sam hammond these are the guys with the defensive coordinator and head coach talked to us yesterday meetings these are the leaders of this football team especially on the defensive side of the football they're just they're going to flash this entire game great job jumping uh that route right there to get to fourth down now just gotta stay on side to get their offensive ball back well dubs took it to the house but it was called back on that first punt it's if they try to keep it away from him it's a wobbler and a fair catch called for and made and nevada has the football for the first time this season right around their own 22-yard line this is a nevada offense that is uh expected to really put up points and we'll get an introduction and a look at it when we return underway in the mountain west and scoreless in reno fighting to open the season but this has been a tough week for head coach jay norvell and with more on that here's our amanda guerra well a tough weekend it's going to be a tough game for coach norvell he found out earlier this week that his father merit norvell passed away he had to leave to go be with his family now mayor norvell is an icon in his own right he was one of the first black athletic directors in the big ten at michigan state not only that he was a huge advocate for minorities he actually planned events with martin luther king jr malcolm x coach nobel says he is just trying to live up to his father's dreams and that includes coaching this team thank you amanda moments of silence in three stadiums this week for uh merritt norvell obviously here a little toss to stovall trying to get out the outside of nevada and he's knocked out of bounds and of course michigan state and wisconsin also with moments of silence now our attention to the nevada offense they have a really good sophomore quarterback and carson strong the biggest jump for all quarterbacks and most players too is from the first year to their second year freshman a sophomore and the coaching staff is excited he's really learned a lot about this offense the protections the schemes on the outside feels more comfortable getting through his progressions that's what i want to see if this defense is going to drop in coverage i want to see him go from one to two and finding his check down it is an air raid offense with some big play receivers and a great play coming up by that wyoming defense it looked like fiance clinton actually it was this hey yes gandhi who made that stop okay the offensive line the union they call them they should be better this year there's big and talented receivers i mean there aren't too many smurfs on the field at wide receiver in this game they got some sides on the outside plus a tight end and cole turner converted from receiver and he's about six six two forty so lots of length lots of speed they just gotta shut up the offensive line this season [Applause] this is a good wyoming defense and devante lee gets that carrot so you're gonna see a lot more devante and maybe avery moro in this football game toa a very good weapon both as a runner and a receiver is not playing in this football game and elijah cooks one of the real weapons in the mountain west conference is not eligible to play in the first half the tall wide receiver who had 76 catches last year will be eligible in the second half you don't see this too often four receivers lined up to the right side of the formation true air raid they're gonna have a lot more 10 personnel this season quick toss there right at the 41 yard line caught in traffic and that's cole turner the tight end a converted wide receiver they expect big things this year from him well just the size the speed and this is where he's going to excel over the middle of the field against linebackers and safeties at 66 240 with some speed he is a match-up nightmare you see it all over the country you see it in the nfl tight ends that you can get matched up with with slower linebackers or someone in the secondary that's an advantage or a corner that's a little bit shorter carson strong fires to the sideline dubs with the catch and dubs is knocked out of bounds and the hit made by cj coldin i'm really loving this game planned right now by matt lemming offensive coordinator nice easy ball of the hand real quick you saw a stick around from colt turner you see a little bit of an omaha right there which is a quick speed out nice and easy if this wyoming team is going to play off and play coverage to try to slow down this air raid offense that's what you have to do as a quarterback take completions force them to come up and man the man and then take some shots down the field strong fires to the far side screen there and upend it is justin lockhart another tall wide receiver the 6-2 sophomore not of palmdale california there's matt mummy and yes he is the son of hal mummy who was kind of the architect of the air raid who had an offensive coordinator way long ago named mike leach and those guys certainly have refined that offense along the way mummy's done a nice job here at nevada well he's also adapted his offense which is a great thing to fit his personal you saw last year a little bit of movement at the quarterback position offensive line was it completely short up so they are running a little bit the ball a little bit more than what you would see with a traditional air raid offense so it's a mixture they want to get more to a past first offense this season with all the town on the outside this is avery morrow getting the carry now this is a freshman out of seattle's garfield high school and morrow's got the first down to the 37-yard line so aaron looks like they're going to do it by committee to replace a guy that's tough to replace and toward tower yeah they're going to miss toyotaro back their physical running back but they have depth of that position they feel good they also have a walk on running back we may see number 32. wesley comer number one running back out of oregon so they have three guys they feel very confident in it's all up to the offensive line this is really the position group that i want to watch tonight these guys must be better than they were last year to nope up the run lanes and give their quarterback some more time in the pocket first possession for nevada on the move for the wyoming 37 little dump off pattern there caught at the 32 well short of the first down and that's morrow 5 11 215 pounds well this is you know that mommy told us aaron this is really the first year he feels like he has the right personnel offensive line weapons for this air raid to really roll and then it starts with the quarterback when they're ready making the right decisions because this offense they want to spread you out they want to play in space and the quarterback is is a glorified point guard in basketball find the one-on-one find the space in the defense and then get the ball to your hand to your playmakers second down six little crossing pattern there stovall with the catch he's the smurf i was talking about he's five nine 185 pounds and he's got the first down to the 26 yard line mudder told us yesterday he is the welsh west welker of this offense slot receiver he's not afraid even with a smaller frame to play over the middle of the field to get around linebackers to get around safeties to get those option routes one on one and he's exciting but he's a true slot receiver that's built for this air raid offense [Applause] this has been an impressive drive carson strong has been accurate devante lee in the backfield now four-man rush for wyoming strong has lots of time end zone corner man there caught and touchdown with a catch in the corner and a gorgeous throw from carson strong absolutely beautiful throw in the corner route they did a great job they had a deep out round by the number one receiver that held down the cornerback and then the corner route on top of that and absolutely pretty you're told to throw it to the back corner let your receiver run there and catch it beautiful execution on the first drive for the touchdown [Applause] so nevada strikes first brandon talton for the point how good was carson strong on the first possession of the season he was in complete command his first possession taken and darkened dinking and dunking then he gets one-on-one with the safety beautiful ball seven nothing nevada college football on cbs sports network is sponsored by geico 15 minutes could save you 15 or more on car insurance by verizon the network more people rely on gives you more and by five hour energy it's road trip season get ready with five hour energy [Music] in reno university of nevada we've waited so long for this mountain west season to open we've had a terrific drive from the wolf pack and a seven nothing lead and a terrible injury for the wyoming cowboys as well sean chambers his dad will have more on that momentarily and the kick into the end zone aaron murray go to work on this touchdown well it's a beautiful design by matt mummy they're going to get quarters defense which turns into pretty much cover zero you'll get a corner route versus inside leverage and then a little bit of an out and stop to hold down that corner and all you're doing carson strong is he's gonna read the corner if he settles at all he knows he has inside leverage on the safety you throw the corner out beautifully throwing football and a touchdown to tory horton 26 yards on the touchdown now if you're just joining us wyoming starting quarterback sean chambers on the third play from scrimmage first possession went down on an awkward tackle and injured his left leg he was taken from the field on a cart levi williams who replaced him last year after a knee injury against this same nevada team has come out williams had a few plays a few throws before wyoming had to punt and give the ball to nevada and so right now it's the red shirt freshman levi williams which is odd i mean how many guys started and starred in a bowl game and come back the next year and are still a freshman but he did not play more than three games last year but it's also it's also tough to start a football game when you get thrown in the first possession so now he's got his feet wet a little bit this season had a few throws there there in the first possession now he feels pretty good went to the sideline got some snaps maybe a couple more throws now mentally you're hopefully into this ball game and see if you can execute to get this thing back to even 7-7 on this drive well nevada's offense certainly lived up to the billing that's timothy davis about to make an announcement both teams are headed back to the sideline they may re-kick this there may have been somebody offsides on the kick and i even if you could read lips you can't because obviously he's got the mask on and there's a look at chambers and amanda guerra is down there and let's go ahead amanda i'm standing right here next to chambers you mentioned they took him off the card he was gone for about 45 minutes came back with a boot on and those crutches he's now on this table getting his left ankle his foot taped up just trying to hold back the emotions when he left he was crying still trying to hold back tears you know he worked so hard to get to this point from injury last season to come back to this point he said when they thought they weren't going to play football it was the worst day of his life he was elated when he found out they were going to play and now for this to happen and his first game back is just heartbreaking thank you amanda he's terrific man they are 9-2 when he starts a football game this one held in the end zone and so wyoming and levi williams now are getting football at the 25-yard line so if you've just joined us chambers who had a broken leg two years ago the knee injury last year that was the tackle this is the emotion that spilled out [Applause] boy you just feel for this kid who's just a sophomore it's tough man we'll keep saying it but he has worked his tail off to get back to be the starting quarterback of this wyoming football team and on the very first possession just a very awkward play there on third and short but williams certainly is capable we saw that in the arizona bowl validate straight ahead and you get a sense now if you're if you're brent vegan and you're an offensive coordinator for wyoming nice to get this offensive line activated and give validation some touches here well they want to run the football there's no question about it especially with the inexperience on the outside of receiver they need to find their playmakers they feel good about what they've seen throughout camp by those wide outs but still a little bit inexperienced they know they have an experienced offensive line they got one of the best running backs in the mountain west you just got to rely on them a little bit early williams has a big arm and he fires it short that's dante crowe the senior out of sheridan wyoming who makes the catch he's short of the first down third down and three now these are nice easy throws for your quarterback get another one you see him go from one to two and then back to one that's your progression when you get on the move short to high and as those linebackers start to drop back then you come back to your number one receiver and once again third in in manageable here for this offense williams one of the bigger quarterbacks in the league six 6-5 240. shotgun and a throwing traffic incomplete there was contact but no flag and again dante crowe is the intended receiver good coverage by nevada and right now through the first two possessions for this offense it's been if they're gonna throw the football just quick hitters quick hitch you see a slant right there from your slot receiver nothing really vertical down the field so these dbs are not threatened until you can show that hey we have trusted our receivers to go vertically down the football field these guys are just going to set the six and be ready to drive when the ball comes out of the quarterback hand so at some point brett vegan's gonna have to take some shots vertically to loosen this defense up romeo dubs earlier in this game had a long punt return for a touchdown call back and they're not kicking it to him they've tried to keep it away from him on the last two punts this one's gonna roll dead right at the 25-yard line the mountain west season is underway and nevada has a 7-0 lead over wyoming [Applause] 7-0 nevada on top of wyoming lake tahoe is not far away from reno and speaking of water aaron murray tomorrow noon eastern dive on in cbs sports network some of the best swimmers in the world team up and hit the water in budapest international swing league on the 24-hour home of cbs sports yeah that's right swimmers getting paid now aaron murray here's your keys to the game [Applause] yeah i think this can be a great football game versus two very evenly teams but for a while i mean they got a mix in the past we talked about take some shots on the field defensively eliminate the big play we saw them get hurt there in the first possession for nevada and then for nevada run the football a little bit mix it up keep the defense on us and then dominate the line of scrimmage defensively you know wyoming's going to want to run the football downhill your big guys up front has to show up tonight and do their job seven of seven was carson strong on that first drive and on the ground this one starts devonte lee across the 25 to the 27 a gain of just two yeah so it's funny i mean first game this season as a quarterback there's always a little bit of jitters uncertainty but i thought mummy did a great job of scripting that ahead of time making sure that his quarterback knew what he was going to be doing and a lot of easy throws you saw just dinking and dunking dinking and dunking a couple screens to the outside omaha routes and then all of a sudden the safety comes up plays a little cover four and you take advantage of the corner route down the field strongest from vacaville california that's down the mountain northern california got a man open stovall out in front and the throw actually it was dubs the throw a little too strong for him and it's incomplete third down and eight wyoming's going to play man-to-man coverage on the outside he saw the communication pre-snap between carson strong and dubs it's a little bit of an elbow tap is there hey go ball grow me a go ball i trust you over number 21 cj colton on the outside just a little bit better ball a little bit more air and keep it outside give his receiver a chance next time they're down in eight lee makes the catch but he's lost the ball he may have been down wyoming has it and the officials say they do have it lee was on his way down possibly the knee hadn't touched and the ball popped right out [Applause] that's gonna be a big play if it is a fumble we'll see that's a fumble and that's you know sometimes you that you want to keep going you want to fight for the first down but when you start losing balance and you're spinning around and all of a sudden balls are going to get popped out these defenders you see it over and over again they're taught to just punch they're literally like a boxer coming in they see football and they're throwing fists at it great job to give their offense an opportunity here at about the 25-yard line to see if they can get this thing sparked up a little bit to put some points on there it was chad mumma who came in and forced the fumble and now levi williams in wyoming from the nevada 26 validate straight ahead nice carry there eight maybe nine yards for the junior out of madison illinois tyson williams with the stop had a pretty good year last year aaron murray and when you when you leave the conference in rushing not too bad 105 yards per game first team all mountain west he's a slasher one cut and he's up field the mark gave him the first down so on first and ten again he gets through to the next level and this is going to be six maybe seven more yards and he enters the verizon red zone so wyoming forcing the turnover this is last season not a great red zone team last year they were below the national average [Applause] second down four and validate hit first by zach mohanna and then finished off by joe jawon claiborne there's a look at claiborne the junior there's a lot of uh parts and late additions to that nevada secondary [Music] [Applause] right here if i'm defensively for nevada i'm playing this pretty tight all we've seen so far is either running the football or quick pass is coming out and nevada wants to get regrouped [Applause] timeout nevada so it's a third down yeah i think they weren't ready for the big personnel they're thinking third and medium maybe 21 maybe 11 personnel one tight end a few more receivers they came out in a big package looking like they're gonna run now the mountain west conference made their schedule announcement back in february everybody did had their media days postponed and then all fall sports were postponed on august 10th but on september 24th the board of directors approved football's return and the key there was rapid testing became available and so the schedule was announced august 1st here we are and here's the pre-season poll though they're not playing in divisions this year you can see that wyoming and nevada are highly thought of by everybody and these are two teams that can contend for a championship this year look right now a little bit covers here you see everyone lined up there defensively they're all out blitz comes williams in trouble gets rid of it and it's incomplete now field goal kicking for wyoming is an issue [Applause] and he had an opportunity he had his tight end tren welch wide open they went they sold out defensively bring cover zero at that point as a quarterback he just got a bail out of the play action i know you're taught hey ride it take your drop and throw it but when you see too many defenders and not enough blockers you abort you retreat and you throw it up to the lone receiver and you bet he would have had an opportunity for an easy touchdown this is a true freshman john hoyland his first field goal attempt is up and it's good he's only playing because luke classic another freshman injured his groin so the number two kicker [Applause] off the bench gets wyoming on the board [Applause] biggest little city in the world reno nevada home of the wolf pack nevada scored first wyoming is on the board rich waltz along with aaron murray amanda carra is with us as well craig ball hand on hips he wasn't quite sure defensively what he was going to have he lost a lot of talent but offensively he knew that he had two quarterbacks that were very very good defensive ranks last three seasons uh i mean this is really good and those ranks are national ranks that's not you know regional or anything like that they have been a terrific defense they lost both linebackers to the nfl logan wilson and cash malawia elijah halliburton was an all-conference safety he's gone and garrett crawl their best defensive lineman is out with a foot injury in this one and that return is out to the 25-yard line helmet comes off of jamal bell and here comes nevada's offense yeah we talk about this wyoming defense and these guys have been tough to move the ball against they've done a great job getting after the quarterback 31 sacks last year second in the mountain west you saw the graphic only given up 17.8 points per game and they've practiced well we talked about all the new faces here new defensive coordinator and he's excited to see some of these guys go out there and play chad mumma who made the huge play the last series what he said about these guys is hey they've practiced hard they've earned the right to start now it's time to go out there and execute have some fun and play some football jay savelle is the new defensive coordinator was it wake forest also at minnesota with jerry kill played a long time ago at uh that great small college mountain union was a national champion playing for larry karis it's a delay of game against nevada so this defense is there's a lot of uh living up to for some of these guys and to a very high standard four defensive linemen opted out for 2020. and as i told you crawl is out with a foot injury though he is not out for the season still got some good ones up front rovante holt victor jones especially first and 15. strong on play action fires to the sideline there's dubs and remember crooks is not eligible until the second half yeah just wait to eat number four out there elijah cook 76 receptions eight touchdowns last season to go along with stovall dubs turner i mean he just got speed and size on the outside and i go back to last possession when romero beat cj kolden one-on-one down the field ball was overthrown but he earned some respect from the db all of a sudden you see a little bit of cushion easy completion to get this to second and short strong dubs he was bracketed there good coverage cj coldin was the corner and some safety help from isaias gandhi you know for a lot of these quarterbacks too they think go balls have to be 40 50 yards down the field i mean go back to when peyton manning was at the end of his career he'd get the ball up and down in about 20 to 30 yards it was boom boom boom so you didn't allow that high safety to be able to make a play on the football if you're gonna play single high and you're gonna match up backside you don't have to throw the ball 40 yards down the field hit your back step get the ball up and down and don't allow that safety to either make a play on the football or have a kill shot on your receiver strong's throw oh boy had two receivers in the same spot cole turner couldn't hold it and he quickly turns to the other wolf pacman that was in the territory it's going to be an incompletion it's fourth down and three yeah it's a miscommunication charles ross on the outside he had a stick route by cole turner on the inside and it looked like charles ross was running a five yard in uh so pretty much running right into each other i think if anything based on where carson strong was going charles ross most likely should have been running an out route or a go ball on the outside to clear some space for his tight end a couple missed opportunities there offensively to move the football julian diaz is a really good punter and nevada has the advantage in the kicking game in this one dante crowe to his right trying to get outside and gets to the 31-yard line and that's where wyoming will put it in play [Applause] tonight's inside college football a recap of the games deliver the top headlines of the day right here on the 24-hour home of cbs sports 2 a.m eastern aaron murray we got another mountain west game right behind us with unlv in san diego state ram brings you the ap poll any big surprises jump out at you there obviously that penn state losing to indiana in overtime and that cincinnati smu game tonight is going to be excellent indiana is pretty darn good williams lobs it down the middle and a leaping catch there isaiah his first collegiate catch the red shirt freshman and he's trying to wrestle it there are three men that have the ball two of them are wolf pack defenders but it looked like nair clearly had it initially yeah ty goes to the runner right so it goes to go to the receiver on this one and that's the shot that i've been asking red vegan to do for wyoming these cornerbacks and safeties are just sitting on the run and sitting on the short balls and what a great job by nair going up he's the guy that flashed during this entire camp leading up to this first game you see the length you see the size you see the ability to go up there and high point it great job oh he almost lost possession in that tie up there but no review and a carry by trey smith his first of the game hit at the line of scrimmage tom peterson number 99 first team mountain west 15 tackles for last last season nine sacks he is the strength of this defense this offense has to find a way to double team him control him or he's going to be a havoc both in the run game and any kind of drop back pass throughout tonight again if you're just joining us sean chambers on the first possession for wyoming had an ankle injury he has left the game he was on the sideline getting treatment williams quick throw to the sidelines caught there and along the sidelines trey smith who was a running back for three years at louisville and now a graduate transfer in laramie they've struggled on these third and mediums anywhere from two to four to five yards [Music] they got to find a way maybe take a take a shot these dbs on these third in in mediums have been sitting on the sticks anticipating slants and hitches maybe a double move goal ball just take a shot validate in the backfield blitz comes williams flushed in trouble can't escape gets back to the 18-yard line short of the first down and we may see john hoyland come back out and that you know craig when we talked to him yesterday was concerned about his kicking game and once again too many guys coming not enough blockers and also a bunch of quick quick routes on the outside had two slants and then outside hitch and then it gets main coverage and these guys sitting on the sixth no one open down the field great job once again on third down by this nevada defense so decision time right now for craig ball we'll have the verdict when we return we're underway in the mountain west nevada and wyoming 7-3 wolfpack [Music] the last few years craig bowles had the luxury of one of the greatest kickers not only in wyoming history but one in mountain west lore cooper roth was terrific all-time leader in field goals and points so he starts this year with a red shirt freshman out of buffalo wyoming luke classic who hurts his groin this week and so walk on john hoyland who's out of broomfield colorado has called on there's classic this is hoyland hoyland has already hit a 26 yarder and now here he is again [Music] and this time this will be a 36 yarder he's got his lucky red shoe on how about that aaron murray how about that john hoyland how about a pick-me-up from a walk-on kicker so it's 7-6 nevada on time let's go down on the field now amanda guerra amanda yeah you guys know yesterday at the university of nevada and named their 2020 hall of fame inductees and headlining that of course would be colin kaepernick i spoke to coach norvell about kaepernick and he said he talked to him a couple weeks ago and the players took really seriously colin kaepernick and you know just his push they said they met over the summer they want to see his picture more on campus the university said that is something they are taking very seriously and they do intend to put more pictures of colin kaepernick back up on campus all right thank you amanda that second name on that list is significant vitala outstanding running back played in the league and his younger brother toetawa who's supposed to be the starter in this ball game is not available and not played jamal bell is deep for the wolf pack and that's the punter nick knull he does the kicking in terms of kicking off and also the punting bell is chased into his end zone and he's gonna bring it out and he's probably rethinking that boy he got popped on special teams there i tell you what rich if i'm a kickoff returner which i would never be in my life because i'm too slow but i'm not taking it if it's in the end zone i'm going to go with it but let's go back carson strong tremendous job on that first series dinking and duncan taking things you see the quick drag route took some momawa some hitches and then boom all sudden corner beautiful throw there to his receiver did a great job so far this ball game nine and 12 80 yards one touchdown strong last year had some really big games and some other games that were deemed as learning experiences for a freshman quarterback but he's got a better understanding of protections this year what's the biggest thing too i mean when you know when you're hot especially in these spread offenses if you know which way the line's going to go protecting it just makes you feel a little bit more comfortable you can settle in in the pocket and if your feet are calm most likely you're going to be able to deliver the ball more accurately down the football field and right now through this first quarter heading into the second we've seen a calm quarterback taking his shots on the football field from inside the ten has time little dump off there devonte lee across the 20 and lee is collared there and hauled down he went one to two he kept his feet calm and then boom find the check down and move the six if they want to play coverage nothing wrong with checking it down they find dubs on a screen he's gonna chew up six yards before he's brought down by chad mumma tub's been a favorite target already with carson strong [Music] and for those who have watched a lot of sec ball and seen mike leach against some of these defenses in the sec they're just playing coverage they're playing zone and just waiting waiting for the quarterback to throw them one and make a mistake and right now it looks like carson strong is in complete demand getting through his reads crossing pattern caught there and that's cole turner and he's got the first down that's a gain of five well these are the throws that coaches have wanted to see him make last year as a young kid you want to make the big plays you want to be the big man on campus throwing gold balls throwing post routes too many shots at times yes they're saying that's the maturity of a quarterback you know the more dinkin and duncan you do the more opportunities you're going to have eventually in this football game to get those throws down the football field play action strikes stroke is tipped and incomplete and it looked like ravante holt got a hand on it victor jones was there as well let's see who got it it was jones that's a great job understanding quick game offense line's going to set fast and if you can't get to the quarterback get your hands up knock that football down and those are the two guys holt and jones that they're really depending on especially with the opt-outs and the injury to crawl to shore up that defensive line they've got talented linebackers behind him good tacklers in the secondary as well second and ten little inside look there dubs has some room and he's out close to midfield got the first down to the 48-yard line it's a creative offense that's for sure and just the speed at which the ball is getting out of cars and strong saying you see one two three no hitch balls out doesn't give the defensive line any opportunity to make a play in the quarterback and right now you're putting these corners on a bike because we've seen some shots on the field so they're a little worried about the speed of this nevada offense you see the respect by the off coverage right now no answer from the secondary a fumble by nevada turned into three points for wyoming this is avery morrow and he'll get to the 50 right at midfield as a part of the offense i want to see continue to mature and get better as we've seen so far carson strong's look good throwing the football they got athletes on the outside but there's going to be games including this game where you're going to have to lean more on the run teams are going to be dropping in coverage against this air raid offense you got to run the football [Applause] from the 49 another quick throw far side of the field and just tripped up with what looked like might be a big play that's tony horton again horton had the touchdown catch that one he almost took the distance as well well that's a great play call by chad mummy wyoming was faking like they're gonna bring it all out blitz not enough numbers on the outside you throw a quick screen see all the defenders up there not enough guys you got two receivers to block two dbs first and ten into wyoming territory davonte lee and he's to the 29. they aren't missing a beat right now without toattawa that mummy's offense and you really could see aaron what he meant yesterday he told us this is the group finally got the weapons to run this air raid and i'm just excited to see when they have their full strength there in the second half and cooks his back cause if they need another weapon second down and two empty backfield strong hit plus the ball it's loose and it's recovered who got it it looks like wyoming is on it [Applause] revonte holt i believe has the football and he does great job on the outside you get one-on-one with the tackle that's cam smith number 85 and it looks like it's jordan bertinoli who got the recovery that's bertinoli 96. play made though cam smith the speed on the outside that's one thing if you're gonna run a spread offense you're gonna get one-on-one with the tackles another big stop by this wyoming defense i guess the story of this one nevada has moved the football better than wyoming has but wyoming has forced two fumbles and recovered them both and early on the season especially with limited time in camp and no spring football the team that plays the cleanest usually going to team that's going to have a chance to win these football games you see it touchdown fumble punt and then another fumble they're moving the ball they're doing a good job you just can't keep giving the ball up and luckily for them their defense has shown off so far in this football game only giving up two field goals right now so wyoming who has settled for field goals their last two drives and again for those of you that have just joined desean chambers injured his ankle on the first possession is out of the game levi williams at quarterback and validate a carry to the 42 where he has stood up and met don peterson is not a guy you want to meet in the middle of the line that's the last person you want to see you might feel good all of a sudden he will close a hole in two seconds his offensive line is going to have their hands full i don't care how good you are this is a very talented offensive line for wyoming a lot of experience coming back on that side headed up by keegan kreider second team mountain west there at the center when you're going against dom peterson you better bring your lunch pail [Applause] williams and that pass went in and out of the hands of aiden everhart one of the two returners at wide receiver now we are in nevada the state of nevada and all of the mountain west schools are working with their local authorities and state authorities for a plan for their stadiums 250 people the limit here families of players only masks are required we do have a very well distanced i might add band and cheerleaders for nevada they've taken up the entire end zone section to our right third down six high snap williams steps into the pocket little lob pass up and incomplete he was looking for treyton welch who had company i thought tyson williams was on the coverage and he was that's great job on the back end no one opened downfield they brought a little pressure a little double a pressure from two linebackers decided to man it up and that's when we see the inexperience of wyoming on the outside guys not able to win one-on-one battles on these third and long situations and that's gonna be an issue for this team as we go through this season they gotta find who's our third down guy who's our red zone guy who's that person we can rely on to create some separation in man-to-man coverage let's see if nick knoll can punt it away from dubs here phil's gonna let it bounce and since he took it uh the distance even though it was called back by a penalty they've kept it away from him nicely 7-6 [Music] we're in the second quarter in the mountain west in reno aaron murray turnovers have been an issue so far for the wolf pack 7-6 nevada leading wyoming well they've had 145 yards here in the game but the turnovers are really hurting you see chad mumma right here the linebacker really excited to see him play forcing that first fumble and then cam smith one alone the tackle beats him around the edge causes the fumble and right now nevada they're moving the football they're making plays they're running the ball decently they just gotta wrap it up take care of it and finish off some drives [Applause] see the takeaways craig bull always has had a great defense whether he was here at wyoming or winning national championships at north dakota state carson strong the sophomore who's been sharp in this ball game this is davonte lee and he's hit initially by cole goodbeau the sophomore out of hudson wisconsin [Music] [Applause] they want to run the ball versus light boxes you see a five-man box defensively and this is the opportunities offensive lineman to prove to their coaching staff that they're ready to take that next step forward in the run game but you gotta win those one-on-one match-ups and take care of the big four up front [Applause] second down 10. sideline shot dubs with the catch and he's got the first down and let's go to our new york studio for a papa john's update rich aaron elsewhere in the mountain west hank buckmeyer with a 52-yard touchdown strike over the middle to khalil shakir boise state in the second quarter leads utah state 14-nothing brockmire brent good to hear your voice in the mountain west here in reno boise state again expected to be one of the top teams very nice throw over the middle soft spot in the defense and it's caught there for a first down and that is justin lockhart the sophomore that's a great job to play action slowed down the linebackers just enough to get colt turner over top in the seam that's what happens if you start running the football even the threat of running it causes those linebackers to start their feet for just a split second when he got talented tied in like cole turner with that speed in size that's all you need to get around the linebackers to create some separation [Applause] and my bad on that it was cold turtle the junior [Music] [Applause] look at that 16 of 20 so far swing pass oh man that almost was a disaster because out early on that play was victor jones the junior out of sacramento it's a great job reading this just a little bit of a swing around by the running back and as a quarterback all you're looking at is the linebacker what's the linebacker doing you're not even thinking in my mind worrying about the defensive end you're anticipating him rushing great job great call defensively to drop out of the flat from victor jones so again nevada is moving the football [Applause] a pair of fumbles have derailed a couple of their possessions a couple times we've seen this all out blitz look they've thrown some screens get the ball of their quarterback's hands [Music] second down in 15 to the sideline [Applause] and it's caught just short of well you can see the spot is gonna give them the first down that's a 16-yard hookup and again romeo doves along the sideline has been deadly and just look at the timing on this throw the ball is out of his hands one two three hitch in the big receiver still running his route i mean that's just great stuff that's the development you want to see from a freshman to a sophomore get the ball out don't wait for your receiver to turn around especially on these deep balls going from left to right about 12 to 15 yards down the field hit that back foot quick hitch boom balls out only your receiver can make a play look like a generous spot it's a first down strong goes to the near sideline and this time it's justin lockhart i feel confident in saying that been impressed very impressed by carson strong so far in this football game obviously the fumble got to take care of it when you feel pressure as a quarterback two hands on the ball keep it tight to your chest i don't think he's been accurate taking care of it second down six strong flushed flings it and it's out of bounds [Music] let's go back to new york rents over what you got guys big ten opening weekend minnesota's tanner morgan gets crushed by michigan's michael barrett donovan jeter right there and he goes in for the touchdown first quarter wolverines lead 14-7 [Music] thank you brent good to see the big ten the mountain west starting up get the pac-12 coming online soon [Applause] [Music] third down six one point game midway through second quarter here nonetheless opener for nevada and wyoming this is lee who breaks inside the 10 down to the seven yard line [Applause] not only a third down conversion but a big game that's a great job you see the linebackers dropping in anticipation of a pass play and then the offensive line getting up to the state level an explosion from lee there to get this team inside the red zone [Applause] almost daniel jones i don't know if you saw the quarterback for the new york giants the other night it was running about 80 yards down the field stumbled and league i think was saying don't daniel jones it don't daniel jones that's staying up right there to get inside the 10-yard line come on that's not fair i know i can't hate on a another quarterback that's me to me that's not fair first and goal lee hit initially spun around it looked like good bow made the hits and the finish by isaias gandhi second down goal [Applause] and lee is the bruiser he's the biggest back this team has on this offense and this is when he thrives in the red zone finding ways to get him in a lighter box running the football he's on the sideline avery morrow is in there now leah's six or rather five nine 235 second goal watch out for cole turner this is his opportunity big tight end in the red zone strong end zone caught touchdown and it's lockhart almost looked like it was deflected [Music] 85 yards 10 plays and a five minute drive let's see if it was touched it was and it ends up in the arms of the sophomore justin lockhart wow that is skill [Applause] a personal foul is going to back this up and wipe out the touchdown and so a personal foul is going to erase the touchdown move it back out to the 24-yard line my goodness the two fumbles a penalty here remember that they punt return for a touchdown was called back nevada very easily could have 21 28 points right now strong caught oh tumbling catch cole turner and another flag is down and turner is down at the one-yard line let me get all 22. [Music] [Applause] here's a couple looks oh they're playing cover two on the back side and you get your tight end matched up so this penalty goes against wyoming the play stands and nevada's right back on the doorstep although remember because of the penalty it didn't reset the downs and so you're looking at third down and goal now they've changed it it is first down in goal direct snap lee straight ahead bounced out and he gets to the one the stick on the sideline had third down [Applause] but we had first down and so this is going to be second down and goal i think same thing this offensive line is their opportunity to show the coaching staff how physical they can be this year get devonte lee we'll see if they put him in the wildcat once again and just give him a couple more opportunities to see if they can punch it in 7-6 another long drive 84 yards 11. i don't think he's in lee again on a direct snap they're gonna need every one of these downs that was cole good bow right there one-on-one with the right guard and he just threw him aside and hit lee in the backfield i mean this was such a great opportunity to show the physicality of this team this is the penalty that wiped out the first touchdown that was a late jump by aaron frost the right tackle but nevada's overcome it to get right back on the doorstep it's third down in goal again lee in the wildcat and i don't think he's got it how about this three times devonte lee at 59 235 has been denied i mean this is incredible defense to be able to stand up three straight plays on on pretty much the the one inch line i mean they may have been just better off just getting in under center and just running a quarterback sneak i mean that's what i would kind of do right now just get under center run a quarterback sneak don't allow that time from the shotgun snap you know to allow this defensive line to win up front avery morrow is the tailback this is fourth and goal outside the goal line quick throw incomplete contact and no flag and wyoming holds unbelievable nevada had a touchdown call back because of a penalty then got to the one yard line and had first and goal from the one and they still don't get any points i tell you what this defense has showed up in this ball game azizi hearn one-on-one little slant not so much still 7-6 [Music] how about this wyoming defense they lose two linebackers to the nfl they have four defensive linemen opt out all they've done is forced two fumbles and they have a big goal line stand coming up halftime report brought to you by verizon the gang in new york gets you caught up on all of the day's college football action here in the mountain west the season starts for wyoming and nevada it's been an entertaining first half and nevada has at times dominated offensively but the two turnovers and the goal line stand have kept it a one-point game we're under three minutes left in this first half levi williams straight ahead we will give you an update probably after halftime on sean chambers look at the yardage advantage i mean just the turnovers it's just been missed opportunities for nevada and their offensive side of the football [Applause] nevada's going to call a timeout they want this ball they want another crack at that end zone aaron murray and so they're going to burn a timeout here on a second and nine now for wyoming these two teams craig bowles cowboys jay norvel's wolf pack many feel should be at the top remember there's no divisions this year the two teams that get to the mountain west championship will be the two teams with the best winning percentage after an eight-game schedule i like that i mean these are if you've seen so far in this first half two very good football teams and a little bit of strategy right now for wyoming you saw a shot down the field early on in this game really they're one shot they threw a post route to isaiah nair and he won the post round and i just think right now backed up you're a running football team you got some safeties and cornerbacks a little bit itchy to want to make some plays when you're backed up like this hard count from the quarterback see if he can sneak a quick five and also this is always a good opportunity to possibly take some shots down the field now we've talked about the two fumbles we talked about the goal line stand remember nevada had a pun return by romeo dubs for a touchdown called back because they lined up offside can't make a mistake here if you're levi williams and the cowboys validate just looking for some breathing room and you would expect nevada here will use a timeout [Applause] i mean the goal always when you're backed up is you just got to get one first down that's what you had to get give your punter some breathing room and then right now too you want to be able to to continue to burn the clock is going to be the key right now because if you don't get this first down you're going to give this nevada team an opportunity to put some points on the board before halftime if they're able to hold on to the football [Applause] tomorrow nfl on cbs doubleheader highlighted by two undefeated teams squaring off steelers and titans then he got a matchup between the 49ers and patriots metropol homes and the chiefs are in denver for a date with the broncos it all starts with nfl today noon eastern sunday the nfl is on cbs both these teams are well represented especially wyoming these are notable wolfpack you know offensive lineman has been a tradition here they call it the union that offensive line at nevada wyoming has 16 players aaron murray in the nfl 11 of them defensive players so that's impressive now third down at seven just hold on to the football [Applause] no timeouts left for nevada so they're gonna have to let the clock run down but they're going to have a good chunk of time once they get the football here are some notable cowboys led by josh allen who's just tearing it up as the quarterback of the bills brian hill talented running back hollister with the seahawks and you get into the good defenders i did not love that possession right there from wyoming would have loved to see them take a shot on the outside i mean you see this nevada team defensively they put 10 guys in the box 101 the outside with your receiver got to take some shots you got to trust your quarterback and your receivers to make some plays nick noel the punnett and a whistle is going to stop play [Applause] and wyoming called a timeout before the punt for the snap timeout wyoming it's the first time ever the mass gives a certain darth vader-like effect just a little bit right every time timothy davis makes his announcement which is you know it's not bad to be a little intimidating as the the referee both coaches talked to us about trying to simulate and equal game speed special teams coming in with just the three weeks to prepare and that's the one thing jay norvell there's a heavy emphasis and he said it's special teams early in this season is gonna make or break some football games that you just have to focus on and it's tough when you don't have a lot of practice time with limited fall camp and obviously no spring camp to really work out so you're gonna see some starters here for this nevada team on all special teams and as we've seen romeo dubs on punt return one of their best playmakers put him back there right now and and for wyoming you have to worry about protecting your punter so if he's able to catch this ball around the 40-50 yard line see if he can do some magic look at that alignment with this punt team [Applause] they don't come after it they'll try to kick it away from dubs he almost runs it down it rolls out of bounds right at midfield and so now the the nevada offense which has dominated in terms of total yardage is going to get the football with two minutes left in this first half when we return to the biggest little city in the world props to the nevada band they are distanced masked and entertaining as well 7-6 nevada on top [Applause] hey guys i'm gonna tell you a really neat story about uh carson strong here so he never thought he'd be playing football at this level back in high school he decided to tag along to a tournament with some friends didn't expect to mates it one of those teams was actually run by a former nfl running back maurice jones drew pulled carson aside and said hey man what's your plan i think you're really good he's like well i'm a zero star recruit i don't have any offers and jones drew said i think you could play division one football and carson strong says back then when he was a junior that's when he really started to believe in himself and in his potential yeah well maurice jones drew knew what he was talking about strong man wide open caught there along the sideline and into the end zone cole turner and nevada finally gets those points [Applause] and the perfect play for the perfect coverage little man on man and a what we like to call a rubber out pick round as defenders like to say it on the outside and cole turner just on a little bit of a wheel route dbs run into each other and he's one-on-one wide open you see right there the confusion who has who two guys going on the slant route no one is worried about the six six two forty tight end running down the c or down the outside and for carson strong that's one you're throwing like please just don't overthrow it it's nice and easy let him make the catch big play that's an enormous play after a frustrating first half moving the football at will jay norvell get their touchdown wyoming now has got a minute 46 and they've got a strong arm quarterback as well i mean you said it rich i mean it's been a frustrating offense or first half for this offense and just a sense of they're moving the football they've been pretty successful getting into the red zone and then you see the mistakes you see the inability to score from pretty much the inch yard line on three consecutive runs or two runs and then a pass they should be up 21-6 possibly more and you know just great play design great throw and i'm really excited to see this cole turner throughout this season his size his strength is catching ability he's gonna be tough you see right there two guys jumping on the slant route a little bit of drag for the number one receiver safety's anticipating a switch where the corner stays outside stays on cole turner he thought he was staying with the receiver the number one guy miscommunication you expect that with a new defense and limited practice time look at about 300 yards of total offense for nevada in this first half crow fields a bad hop gets to the sideline gets out to the 28 yard line it's a nice return and we'll see now if the redshirt freshman levi williams can move wyoming into scoring position with a minute 40 left and two timeouts you had to trust them i think this is the point right now offensively they've had little success especially on third down oh for seven in this ball game only 96 yards here in the first half and and you just got to we saw the one shot in the post ball great catch by nair two minutes to go plenty of time have a couple timeouts in your pocket they have a pair of red shirt freshmen isaiah nair who made that catch and alex brown who are the guys that can stretch the field for this team [Applause] williams trying to avoid the rush he does fires it down the middle again and he had two receivers converging and it's incomplete [Applause] second attempt you said it he has the arm williams we saw it last year in the bowl game that you and i both covered and you see him in pre-game warm-up the ball just pops out of his hands you know these wyoming quarterbacks ever since you know really josh shawn have been known to have these big strong arms to throw the ball vertically down the field and they feel like they have the length at receiving right now guys there six two to six four that have the height on the on these cornerbacks just gotta give an opportunity nair in motion validate and validate is across the 30. if you're wyoming do you it's third down so if you use a timeout here and you don't get the third down then all of a sudden nevada gets the ball back with some clock listen every time you get on the field it's opportunity to get better and this is a two-minute drill you're gonna need a two-piece to win a football game at some point this season and right now by the just lack of energy and and trying to get going a little bit right now it's just you're losing an opportunity it's great to do it in practice but live game reps are simulating and going after two minute drill i wish they would kind of go a little bit harder right now third down at seven and that's gonna be the first down and that's validate who helicopters down to the 43-yard line they're going to move the chains the clock has stopped and wyoming still has the two timeouts in their back pocket well let's get going now you got the first down you got to play to kind of ignite you get to the line of scrimmage let's get a call going and see if you can move the ball into field goal range now first and ten four-man rush williams is flushed fires it incomplete was caught but out of bounds was nate weinman and heading into this game we thought the more physical team when it came to line of scrimmage may be this wyoming offensive line a lot of experience a lot of really good players but right now especially in the past game this defensive line for nevada with only russian four guys has been able to make williams a little bit uncomfortable in the pocket so if you're able to rush four and make the quarterback move around and drop seven into protection you're gonna you're gonna swarm these receivers as we've seen so far in the first half the ruling on the field [Music] the officials were pretty adamant about calling it incomplete let's see if we can take a look we see that just 27 seconds left [Applause] let's see if he gets a foot in it looks like that left foot yeah he's out of bounds good call by the ref right there should be a quick review and ball is bounced off the turf there as well so double whammy for the incompletion and that's a double confirm yes [Music] confirm squared [Applause] take one more look but right now right foot's off left foot's out of bounds and then [Music] [Applause] we documented the kicking issues for wyoming the fact that the redshirt freshman kicker luke classic is out with a groin injury we've seen john hoyland hit from 26 and 36. craig told us that that's probably the limit that 35 to 38 years six was a nice kick though he hit it right through the middle with some of it maybe he could have gone from about 45 to 50 but maybe just a mental block once he gets farther back maybe he's earned a shot at 46 and see if they can get him there the second down and ten williams again into rest and he stopped him sacked and dropped once again just four guys he's seven guys in rush and you see a little conversion from tumor number seven mohanna these guys are getting a great jump off the ball as we head into the second half and it's been a great performance by this defense in nevada overall as a football team this has been a dominant performance by nevada except for the turnovers and then not being able to get it in on first and goal for the one this very easily could be a 28-6 half-time lead as it is nevada on top of wyoming and the mount west opener 14-6 verizon halftime report is coming up after this [Music] don't yeah nights falling in the sierras lake tahoe over the mountain pass you find yourself in reno and nevada finds themselves up 14-6 as we get ready to start the second half here rich walt along with aaron murray uh look this very easily could be a 28-6 ball game right now nevada dominated that first half statistically well wyoming defensively they're making some plays to keep them in this ball game a couple turnovers goal line stand i mean i agree with you rich this game should be out of hand right now they got to find a way offensively to get the ball moving and unfortunately sean chambers first series gets injured we'll get some more from amanda after the kickoff about the injury but defensively they've done a great job with these turnovers that that has moved the ball and they mama right there with a great job and then 101 the outside of the spread offense these tackles are on an island right there as well creating turnovers keeping them in the game but carson strong has looked really good to me deacon and duncan they're taking his shots down the field great job there on the first drive and then finding his big tight end here for the touchdown before halftime this is the exciting offense a lot of playmakers they just got to continue to get the ball in space but carson strong was 21 of 27 in that first half five hour energy brings you first half stats look at the the numbers that jump right out in red golly and then the third downs two only one of eight for wyoming their first completion on the third down was on that last possession right there but only 106 yards they gotta start taking some shots down the field trusting their receivers trusting their quarterback [Music] would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall with craig bull at halftime for wyoming and this kid you know matt mummy told us yesterday the improvement that he's made from his freshman to his sophomore year has been enormous and it really shows he looks calm and cool look at the numbers aaron murray 21 of 27 253 yards already and remember he had a touchdown throw that was uh called back because of a penalty at the same time and this is one of the more enjoyable coordinators that you're going to meet in college football matt mommy is terrific we love our meetings with him he's so honest and open and of course the creative he comes from that tree where his dad howl and howl's offensive coordinator at the time mike leach devised this air raid offense and he really feels that this is the year with the offensive line the way it is with the wide receivers the way they are and with this quarterback carson strong that this air raid can really take off for nevada and it sure did in the first half out of the end zone and crowded at the 13-yard line is jamal bell [Applause] and good special teams worked there by wyoming amanda guerra what's up at halftime yeah i just spoke to coach bowl and got an update on sean chambers he said it is not looking good he says he believes he may have a broken fibula and of course that would be season ending for him so not only for this game for potentially the rest of the season it will be levi williams as for the rest of the cowboys he said they need to stay on the field more on third down as for the other side nevada i spoke to jay norvell he says hey we just got to clean up our mistakes he talked about the turnovers there he said if we can clean up our mistakes they can have a better second half thank you amanda that's just heartbreaking to hear from the news about sean chambers he had a broken fibula his freshman year the cartilage injury last year limited him to just the eight games and on the third play this year that injury that we just showed it's tough i had that same injury my senior year of high school broken fibula midway through the year and still got a plate and three screws in my left ankle and it's a pain in the butt but i'm sure things are better what 15 years from when that happened to me and you know thoughts and prayers for him and hopefully a speedy recovery because we we've talked about all the first half and he worked his tail off to get to tonight to be the starting quarterback he's a tremendous leader guys on the team respect him and hopefully he'll be back soon a little toss romeo dubs and dubs on the left side now remember elijah cooks number four and you can see him right there on your screen bottom of your picture there he is cooks is now eligible to play at the end of last year there was a real dust up between unlv and nevada after their rivalry game and cooks was suspended two games he sat out the bowl game famous potato bowl and they appealed his second of the two game suspension leading into this season and it was reduced to one half so now you've got another weapon who caught 76 balls and eight touchdowns last year and they're going to throw down the sideline looking for melchor stovall and stovall who had two men on him hauls it in right at midfield absolutely beautiful one-on-one i love these inside fade routes we're seeing more and more teams executed but look at his eyes one first step down the football field control the safety in the middle and then a beautiful throw but even better catch out there by stovall well he was interfered with as well made the catch and held the ball from midfield first and ten little pump fake strong fires it to the flat and not much going out there that's gonna lose about three yards this guy is just a sophomore vacaville california is home and he drove his coaches nuts in august and september because with with covet and once the mountain west said that they were going to stop the season and not start it yet every day he called his head coach jay norvell and then his offensive coordinator are we going to play are we going to play when are we going to play when do we get to play are we going to practice every day multiple phone calls and finally they were able to tell them yep sees it on october 24th and here we are and strong oh what a catch look at that that's cooks welcome to 2020 elijah cooks oh it's nice to be 6'4 and have that on the outside ball was overthrown like i said with his size and length at 6'4 and a little bit more energized if they're sitting out that first half to go up in one hand catch it like that and then they get both feet down look at that you said it welcome to 2020 non-west football these guys have a lot of talent on the outside i wonder if they're going to review this one to see if he had possession [Applause] the ruling on the field of a completed poor pass is under review i i just keep going back to what matt mummy told us that this year man the weapons are here the quarterback is here the line is here let me just go back to the first half with the play stovall was with making that cole turner on the outside romeo dubs and then now all of a sudden you throw cooks in there too and we'll get some good looks at this from our camera crew but you know the feet are down and you know it just that looks pretty good to me i know the ball is moving maybe a little bit as he goes down but there's a completed ball feet are clearly in bounds you don't have a clear look there with ball hits turf i think they just wanted i don't think the ball ever hit the turf but it does seem to move a little bit once he starts to go down so maybe the thought of losing possession but now it stays it stays in the arm it stays that left forearm is yeah it's a catch i think the officials just wanted to review it so they could see the catch again it was so good i'm with it i'll take a few more views of that one i mean carson strong has been feeling pretty good about obviously his first half performance i thought he did a tremendous job taking what the defense gave him taking his shots downfield at times and then you know now all of a sudden making some plays with with his newfound receiver here in the second half [Music] every view from right there looks to be the announcement could sound like the the call is confirmed and it was glorious it was even better than we thought we went back and watched it on replay about five or six times well they're taking a good look at this i thought this would be pretty easy for them to make a decision let's remember like it says on there call on the field was a reception so i just don't see anything that is going to overturn this based on the camera angles we've seen i mean and you talked about the size 6'4 is cook's 215. dubs is 6-2 200. that's all for cole turner the tight end former receiver 6-6 240. he had that touchdown catch right before halftime i'm excited to see this offense in the red zone now where do you get some six four and six six guys there you can kind of move around and create some match-ups and you know as a quarterback you just say all right where's my who's the shortest guy on defense the ruling on the field the ruling on the field of a completely forward catch stands as call you could hear and we can see looking at flags that the wind has picked up here in reno and right now nevada is going right into that wind which probably about 10 maybe at times 15 miles an hour strong now and nevada at the 38 of wyoming they are well over 300 total yards in this game 309 little swing pass nice catch out of the backfield by lee he's tough to bring down i mean he's still on his feet five nine 235. tough to get leverage he's a bruiser and he's done a great job out of the backfield in this game and let's not forget too we talk about the athletes on the outside and they're missing their star running back toetawa has been out and then hopefully back soon but i mean you throw him into the mix with a deep running back crew and all these receivers and tight end on the outside i mean that's just another weapon for carson strong in this offense and and matt mummy to have some fun with throughout the season second down four that was a gain of six blitz comes boy the ball's out of his hand quickly caught there by dumps and he's out of bounds at the 21-yard line and once again it's not just completing balls but the anticipation right now throwing it before the receiver even breaks out of the cut right there it's just a deep out route we call it an okie six steps and just watch one two three balls out and romeo still has two more steps before he breaks on the out route that's just complete trust anticipation and it's amazing to see because we we've talked about i mean there's limited reps in fall camp and no spring and to see that timing in week one is really impressive from still a very young quarterback on first and ten lee lost his footing and gets back to the original line of scrimmage second down and 10. the story here if you're just joining us a disastrous injury for sean chambers the quarterback for wyoming a dominant first half by nevada offensively but two turnovers a punt return that was nullified it was a touchdown there's a look at chambers that left ankle in a boot and a goal line stand by wyoming kept this one at 14-6 it very easily could be 28 or 35 to 6. second down at 10. strong on target there's that tight end cole turner this is a guy that many people are going to say middle of the season has come out of nowhere because he was a wide receiver had six career receptions but he kept growing to six six to forty and now he's a tight end and now nevada's in the red zone brought to you by verizon and went back mommy tell us i mean he showed up cole turner on campus was six six and 190 just uh just a string you know plain receiver then he's been working really hard and on his bryson the chamber diet just pounding protein shakes and now he's six six 240 and you know playing well and you know a tight end with that skill set is is a fun weapon for all quarterbacks avery morrow's got the first down to the five and he's in touchdown nevada moro the freshman that's a great job offense i want you to focus on the offensive line especially tyler orsini number 55 the center does a great job and what's in this defense is expecting pass pass pass everyone's dropping back the offensive line is able to get to the second level and spring their running back morrow for the touchdown and that's a great possession they're mixing up the pass and run carson's strong doing a great job very accurate on time and it's good to see them complete a drive here to start the half zach welch also with a nice block next to orsini and the kick is good and now if you're wyoming you need an answer right now nevada has been terrific offensively in the end zone to start the second half the wolf pack in the mountain west opener a 21-6 lead with the injury to sean chambers levi williams on the left has been the guy for wyoming and we've seen carson strong just have an incredible night so far 29 of 35 for 329 and two touchdowns and here's the offensive comparison there really is no comparison right now no it's been a struggle and until they can find someone on the outside to win some one-on-one match-ups and trust those guys it just defenses are gonna stack the box which nevada has done so far in this game and saying listen we're gonna take away validate and we're going to force you to win on the outside and at some point they're gonna have to in this game especially down 21-6 start throwing the ball down the field a little bit more high tackle there on dante crowe but we know that you know levi williams can get it done you and i were were there to call this game against georgia state he was terrific this throw is incredible the arm strength is there there's no question about it i mean you stand there and watch him throw in pregame warm ups and watching him last season big kid strong arm he's physical he's put a lot of weight on here in the offseason to be able to run the ball maybe not as dynamic as sean chambers is but you know he can do everything and i just think there's some you know he needs some help on the outside and and you know until he said so they can find that number one guy they're gonna struggle a little bit well maybe establishing this guy validate who is stuffed and hit and stopped that was lawson hall the middle linebacker the captain who made the initial hit valedia 47 yards in the in the first half here's your sonic quarterback comparison and just like with the the stats of the team no comparison right now strong having a heck of a first game looks like he's in mid-season form and you know not all on williams obviously i think the big thing too watching this game wyoming wanted to be more physical and on the offensive line right now they've been dominated by this nevada defense validate again and this time he gets up and over the 25 to the 27 yard line you need to get to the 29 for a first down it's a third down and two and this down and distance is when they miss shawn chambers because this is an issue for defenses when you have a quarterback that you can run the zone read almost like that triple option type feel with the hands of the running back quarterback pull maybe pitch to another receiver running back that's something that shark chambers brings and you know we said williams has the size and the speed so we'll see if they can incorporate a little bit of that's the offense validate looking for a hole and i don't think he's going to get there this nevada front is experienced and talented they call it a fumble [Applause] i think they did hold on the officials the ruling on the field forward progress will stop there you go fourth down i'm telling you this defensive line right now for nevada with hammond and peterson and mohanna tumor they're getting the job done i mean they're not blitzing linebackers they're not blitzing safeties i mean they're low in the box because there's been no threat to throw the ball deep besides one poster out there in the first half but those four guys up front have dominated this football game and it's a little bit surprising honestly i mean wyoming offensively they've been known to have a great offensive line they got a great crew back a lot of experience a lot of talent and they're going to lean on those five guys this entire season it has not been a good start here for the first two and a half quarters dubs with a fair catch makes it and the nevada offense gets the football back impressive stuff here in reno tonight for the wolfpack or early in the second half [Music] college football on cbs sports network is sponsored by the junior garlic butter bacon burger only at sonic ram built to serve and by geico 15 minutes could save you 15 or more on car insurance [Music] last year 31-3 wyoming in laramie dominated nevada the coin has turned here right now nevada is on top let's go down to amanda guerra amanda yeah you guys said before the break that wyoming needs to make something happen uh they need some coffee they need to wake up they're absolutely despondent on this bench they're just standing around just kind of staring into dead air coach bowles trying to pump him up now sean chambers hobbling around on his crutches trying to do the same thing thank you amanda and on first and ten on the ground amanda do you think that the chambers injury took the wind out of wyoming remember it happened on on the third play of the game yeah and that's really frustrating because it did happen so early and i'm a little surprised that it did because it absolutely did i mean they just stopped after that but given the faith this team had in levi williams you think that they would have a little bit more energy but that's just not what we've seen at all right and i agree with that last statement right there because they knew both quarterbacks were going to play in this football game so i mean he almost had a 1a1b quarterback situation i just think the lack of big plays is really hurting this team i mean you look at this took that offense and it's big play after big play after big play moving the ball then look at your offense and it's just been just trying to grind it out two three yards at a time and it's just been a struggle for them and once again just the timing of these routes as you see right there and just you can tell carson's strong and romeo doves have worked really hard pre-practice post practice whenever they can because i'm telling you they look like they're in mid-season form right now by the way the ball's coming out the anticipation the timing they're down in two lee has the corner has the first down and has midfields on that carry once again tyler orsini pulling around the center doing a great job getting to the second level this is an offense that we talk about the passing game as you see right there look at the big guy the big center getting out there and taking on the linebacker but if they can continue to run the football maybe talk about the air raid and mummy and where he's come from and that tree it's all past past pass but he's a little bit different he released go back and watch the film last year and they want to throw the football obviously but they do run the ball more than most air raid attacks and it really keeps his defense honest on first down right near midfield carson strong another deep shot another man open caught [Music] and the ball is loose and incomplete dubs who has 10 catches wyoming says that's a pick you could hear azizi hearn yelling at the official that that's a pick let's take a look at it it's reviewable he beat him deep and had the opportunity oh that may be a pick aaron murray i think that's a pick that's interference i think it's a pi first off that should be called uh just not allowing dubs to go up there and make the catch but there's no flag so that's not gonna be called and that's a pick that's an int that is a pick aziz hearn you are right and he told the official that's a pick and they're gonna look at this and and from everything we've seen that is a pick and carson's showing just a little late on that we talk about the timing that he's demonstrated so far in this ball game and just took one too many hitches it's 101 the outside he lets that ball go a second earlier and that's an easy touchdown for dubs he just absolutely beat azzy on the outside but since the ball was light gave the corner an opportunity to catch back up and you still would hope that dubs can just go out there and out muscle and win this jump ball but great overall effort by his easy catching up right here but definitely a pi should have been called in the first place but got away with one and most likely he's gonna get an interception and and once again another huge play by this defense to keep this team in the ball game yeah that's the part of replay that we've not arrived yet yet when you're looking at one thing and you see another like you see the past interference obviously that can't be called but this looks like it will be an interception because it didn't even look like the ball hit the ground it looked like hearn's arm was underneath the ball when he rolled over here's another question aaron murray in this review is there possession yeah there's definitely positions no i mean does does he get in the end zone while he still has a piece of the ball i don't think dubs ever had possession now yeah but dubs doesn't have possession of a football right there is it there in his left arm all right so it's you know they're taking every look at it possible but i think this is once again just like the catch we saw earlier from elijah cooks the one-handed this is to me pretty clear-cut of of interception and and give wyoming the football and they're hoping it is they need you know we talk about and amanda's told us a lack of energy on that sideline what do you need you need a big play whether it's offense or defense something to get some juice and energy over there and maybe this is the spark they needed here in the second half to rev up those engines a little bit and from that lower angle it looked like by the time the ball got to the end zone this is that lower angle let's see when possession changes from dubs to her it looks like right there as they enter the end zone there's a lot of that's a lot to think about in this replay a ruling on the field of an incomplete forward pass stands this call whoa how do you call that an incomplete pass you knocked all that into reception how could that be an incomplete paradigm bulls is like are you kidding me right now i mean that i'm a little shocked right now um obviously the receiver did not catch it so it's not a complete forward pass but the ball has to hit the ground for it to be incomplete right wow that's a break for nevada and and if you're wyoming that's a big play you were hoping for so after all of that it's second down and 10. and carson strong's beautiful night still going strong right now after you know pretty much i would think it's his worst pass tonight which still wasn't a bad pass he gave this guy an opportunity to make him play just a hair bit late but they uh they definitely got lucky with that call right there nice 30 of 37 this one is caught he loves the height of these receivers and that's the smallest guy and even he went up and got it that's mel juan stovall [Applause] and that's another first down you just love to see a slot receiver at his height who's not afraid to go up there and catch and understand that hey there's linebackers and safeties coming down converging on me and i'm willing to go up there and sacrifice my body at you know 5758 the report from the replay official is they felt the views they had were blocked and they could not determine whether the ball hit the ground or not they had the same views we had right i'm just with i'm the messenger yeah i'm sorry i'm getting mad at you but i don't know what more they wanted that ball did not touch the ground anywhere so uh someone needs to talk into after this game because that's just that's unfortunate for that defense and we talk about the need for momentum and that was a huge momentum play for that team to get some energy and and once again look at the sideline and it just seems like it was sucked right after right out of them after that call yeah avery morrow with eight yards there second down and two well the drive continues and you can see they've eaten up a pretty good chunk of clock here getting into wyoming territory from the 33. strong avoids one hit and he's sandwiched by three cowboys and goes down at the 38-yard line jordan bertinoli who recovered a fumble in the first half part of this set do they give i know they give half sacks what about a third of a sack when you've got three guys yeah everyone gets a third and just great job i mean that's a that's a covered sack you look down the field everyone man-to-man coverage pretty good but he did have cole turner one-on-one matched up with a cornerback that looks to be about half his size so when you do get man coverage and you have a height advantage i think that's the next step for carson strong when guys aren't open but you know they got six or seven inches throw it up and see what the big guy can do third down in eight they'll fire it to dubs romeo dubs with his 11th catch and he's often racing inside the 20 caught by the shoot tops hauled down there by easton gibbs but not before another first down and another catch on a big night for romeo doves [Applause] let's get matt mummy tell us yesterday when he catches the ball he's like a cheetah that's what he wears the exact word he is he is a cheetah the kind of speed that he has and you saw it right there the ability to catch one two and boom hit it right now 22 to four in first downs just absolutely dominant performance on both sides of the football for this team right now strong's throw on the money lockhart in the middle inside the ten he may be short of the first down it's a gain of nine [Music] this is when you can start to really have fun when you've got a bunch of six four six six six two receivers you know it's kind of pick your match up who do you feel has the best chance to win some one-on-one balls here as you get in the red zone it's it's a quarterback heaven have this height here and this advantage [Applause] second down is short blitz comes strong has time there's the lob ball there's the catch for the touchdown turner falling down holds on flag is down it looks like it's going to be defensive pass interference i mean that's what you do when you have receivers that are that big throw it up let him go catch a rebound that's all you got to do six six man just give him a chance he's gonna body these guys out pass interference number 26 defense that penalties decline result of the play is a touchdown right now cole turner is still down there on the turf so hopefully nothing too serious with him heck of a catch heck of a body control [Applause] well you think about that call in the end zone that looked to us like an interception it was an interception it doesn't look like it was an interception i don't get the camera angles but i mean great throw and you know that's this is it i'm gonna keep saying six six man just throw it up at the rim and let these guys go up and get it dubs cooks turner even lockhart is 6-2 she's and he's had a nice night as well if i'm mummy calling plays right now i'm just licking my chops this i just don't know pick your poison and and once again they're missing their starting running back tonight in this ball ballgame and i've been really impressed honestly with this offensive line i think to me that's been the biggest surprise we knew they had skill in the outside but they've been proving to us over and over again that they can protect up front that they can run the football and right now carson strong is dealing complete control this offense doing his thing and giving his playmakers opportunities down the football field his team's rolling right now 28-6 they've added up in the third quarter [Music] after eight reno was all lit up and and saw the wolf pack quite honestly tonight 28-6 here in the third quarter tums brings you top 25 scoreboard that indiana finish was a wild one indiana's pretty good this year and that's a nice win for them taking down number eight penn state oklahoma state survives iowa state and marshall you and i have seen marshall twice they're into the top 25 that's a really good team and you know what that the hard part for them is their schedule they've got so many cancellations right now they've got eight maybe nine games on their schedule and remember they started back in early september [Applause] that one out of bounds we're telling you about dubs and his big night he's got 11 catches for 108. now cole turner [Applause] free kick out of bounds kicking team the ball will be placed at the 35-yard line first down who we sold to you early on as a guy to watch cole turner is not disappointed tonight seven catches two touchdowns he's made some big plays and it's just been a match-up nightmare for this defense they just really don't know who to put on him they've tried safeties nickels linebackers and he's a great mismatch for matt mummy in this offense now the challenge for levi williams is get some first downs and get some points good throw there caught by isaiah nair that's the second nice catch by the redshirt freshman out of fort worth texas you see the arms trains right there i mean that was an absolute bullet down the field on the corner route from there and then that that you know to me right now it appears to me that nary is the go-to guy he has lane he's demonstrated some speed he's obviously showing us that he could go up there and win those 50-50 balls and you know as this offense gets going here in the you know end of this third quarter to the fourth i want to see him keep taking shots down the field you know learn to see what you have and what you don't have as the season goes on blitz comes williams is flushed flag goes down it's caught there on the sidelines and out of bounds is alex brown but you suspect holding with the area of the flag [Music] [Applause] [Music] and levi williams was about 35 pounds heavier this year than he was last year he's got the frame he's six five and he's came in at 245 and they say now he's down to about 2-4 they're filed by both teams on the play holding number 75 offense hands to the face number 10 defense those fouls offset replay first down that's a that's a good exchange for wyoming because point of foul on a hold would have been a big loss [Applause] timeout for edward jayden deadman the one of the corners for nevada went down before that ball was snapped as impressive as the offense has been the defense has had a nice night brian ward is the defensive coordinator in his first year spent the last four years as the syracuse defensive coordinator and he's got to be pretty pleased with his defense [Applause] and now nevada doesn't have the right personnel on timeout nevada it's the first time out at half and so nevada's going to call a timeout well let's just go to new york and get an update from brent rich aaron big one in prime time in the american tonight desmond ritter calling his own number 12 yard touchdown run 14-0 late first quarter number nine cincinnati the lead at 16th ranked smu all right thank you brent thank you nice update on a team that you and i saw a lot of last year and there's no surprise that they're number nine in the country cincinnati is a really really good program it's a great stadium and we were fortunate enough to see them three times last year great campus too their athletic facility which is i think fairly new too right there in the heart of the yep the campus is is just everything is around that football team and they have done a great job with fickle there as a head coach this is the play that couldn't get off the ground right it's just it's unfortunate for this team and when you talk about what amanda's told us it's the lack of energy on the sideline you get a big play then all of a sudden you go into this low of three minutes of penalties and you know god just they can't get consistent energy and excitement and any kind of juice going on the outside of the football first and 15 williams a bullet over the oh hard hit everhart took it and flags rain down and certainly this one will be reviewed as eberhard gets to his feet yeah i think everyone in the stadium knows that there's going to be a ton of flags on this one and we'll see i mean the lunging right there i mean that's what they want to get rid of defensive players in the see the defender leave his feet that's a no-no right there leave your feet go with the head of a defenseless player and that's going to be targeting every time resulting in play is an incomplete pass personal foul targeting number six of the defense that player is under review you can't launch at them rich you just can't do it i mean it's i know it's tough on these defenders but you know anytime you leave your feet off the ground and launch at a defenseless receiver especially anywhere above the neck or excuse me above the shoulder pads really flags are out and regardless of whether it's helmet or shoulder i mean right there you can you can easily aim and keep your feet at the ground and put your shoulder right in his sternum right in his chest and make the hit but as soon as i said you launch those two feet off the ground [Music] [Applause] it's a dangerous play that's one that we got to get rid of and it's been it's been working but you still see it out now and then i think what you're getting now is you're getting a whole generation of players that are in college football and some that have gone to the nfl that have been through high school and youth football taught the different after review the ruling on the field is confirmed number number six is disqualified and you can see right there number one is uh you can check number one right there the launch and leaving the feet [Applause] so wyoming now has the football at the 21 yard line of nevada this i mean i know how this is a lopsided game if wyoming sticks it in the end zone here yep far from over if you're down only two scores if you're able to put this in the end zone with you know still here and late in the third quarter levi williams pretty good runner and williams is going to bust into the end zone and wyoming has the touchdown [Applause] and let's see if they go for two or they kick the point here i think you kicked the point here but that's a great job i mean we talked about you know maybe he's not sean chambers but he still has the speed and you see the big guys getting out front number 69 erica beauje and his size that's a 240 pound quarterback yeah that is i don't want to if i'm a db i might go thank you you go for legs maybe but when he gets a full steam going downhill like that boiling the young kicker knocks it through so a bright spot here for wyoming that's what they needed man they got some big throws from their quarterback levi wings and then hey let the big man finish it off with a great run and they got some energy making this a ball game here 28-13 [Music] third play of the game sean chambers suffered an injury to his left ankle and levi williams took over and it's taken williams a while to get hot but he's hot now ball control you know even though this is lopsided on time of possession aaron i think it's important for wyoming the time of that last drive gave their defense at least a chance to get off the field seriously man they've been on the field a lot this football game and richie brought a good point up there during the commercial break if that was an interception by azizi before then the last possession this is a game that's all of a sudden 21-13 and it was an interception i'm still going to go down when i put my hand on the pillow tonight i'm going to be saying that was an interception and a missed call by the guys up in the booth but uh it's know it could be 21-13 it's 28-13 but we still got a ball game and there's plenty of opportunities for this team to hopefully rally and get some energy and see if they can be on the defensive side of the football now jamal bell boy special teams especially kickoff team is pretty good for a while he's bringing it out just fair catch it put it to the 25 they're having no success on the return right now that's miles williams with that hit let's do a little dirty work brought to you by coyote and this man there's nothing dirty about this guy no this is super clean and efficient right now uh for carson strong you see his offensive line's giving plenty time in the pocket he's getting the ball out of his hands on time very accurate uh and just giving these guys between big plays that's that is your job as a quarterback give your playmakers an opportunity to go out there and make plays and he knows he has skill he knows he has size on the outside and he's just like i said he's put in in places to let those guys go out there and be superstars let's see if any of that momentum rubs off on the defense that's cooks with the catch and he's gonna chew up about eight yards before he's hauled down by chad mumma and a couple other cowboys second down and two cooks a spectacular catch remember he was ineligible to play in the first half but he's been a weapon here in the second half [Applause] two receivers already are over a hundred yards cole turner and romeo dubs stovall is at 70 yards strong racing for the sideline richard i love how you say cole as a receiver and as you watch this football game i mean he's listed as a tight end but they don't line him up as a tight end i mean he's split out every single time so really you can call him a titan all you want he's a receiver right now in this you know maybe if he has a chance to play the next level you know he could be like a travis kelsey because he has that similar build to move him inside and outside but the majority of the time he's flexed out in the slot or 101 the outside so third down in two [Applause] devante lee in the backfield and that did not look like a clean lift off there [Applause] call start number 54 offense five-yard penalty third down it's the leader of the union which is the long-held nickname of this offensive line at nevada jermaine led better [Applause] this is a big play right here for both teams i mean for for nevada they want to get the momentum back on their side and for wyoming if you're able to get out of this right now and get some good field position and see if your offense can capitalize on what the momentum may create on that last last position for themselves i mean this is i think there's a critical down for both teams right here we saw cole turner on the bench for this snap which is now third down and seven and strong is going to air it out down the sideline incomplete and no flags remember azizi hearn and how vociferous he was that that was an interception well that's an incompletion i'm sure he's saying if there's one thing that i would critique from carson strong tonight and there's not a lot to critique because he's been pretty pinpoint with his throw is is the deep ball right now i think he's just allowing it to just develop too far down the field i think it just needs to be a little bit faster you see it's been under thrown a couple times allowing the defenders to go out there and make a play to catch up just get the ball out i talked about payne manning in his last few years i mean that ball was completed around 25 30 yards it doesn't have to be a 50-yard ball boy that's a line drive kick and a really good one by julian diaz and it rolls all the way down inside the 40 to the 35 yard line so we'll see i mean the momentum of wyoming's touchdown drive rubbed off on the defense and we'll see now if the redshirt freshman levi williams and the rest of the cowboys can keep it rolling i just want to see him throw the ball some more continue to throw it and then continue to use levi williams in this run game i mean that was one of the big things about this offense was sean chambers and the threat of a running back or quarterback running the football and i think they need to utilize that more along with letting him throw the football he had a nice carry for a game the last time out now aaron you saw we saw him in the arizona bowl and levi williams had some big moments there what's the difference from the end of last year to the start of this year for this guy i just think they're still trying to find guys the outside that they trust i think that's the biggest thing right now this you know brett vegan i don't know if he has complete trust in the receivers i mean he talked about how well they've looked in practice but you know there's a big difference between practice trusting these guys and then game day going out there and doing their thing and this is a secondary bit for nevada who struggled last year so i was expecting to give their guys some more opportunities one-on-one down the field and see what they can do second down eight on play action blitz comes he's in trouble he's dropped boy that was a delayed blitz by lawson hall the junior linebacker and he had his he had his star receiver on the outside to the right open you see him look at him for a split second had him on the out round but great job defensively to create this third and long situation this is third law this is third down in 17 final seconds of the third quarter opener in the mountain west for wyoming and nevada williams little screen pass let's see if it develops validate has the skills and validate gets close but not quite to the first down i mean i think it's a perfect opportunity going to the fourth quarter that you may consider going for this right now you know you want to keep the momentum on your side you had a great touchdown drive your defense is able to get off the field i think the last thing you want to do is give the ball right back to nevada offensively so take this take this quarter right here think about it but i would not be surprised if they go for it on fourth down and manageable well craig bowles got the uh the break here between the third the fourth to think it over looked like a blowout for nevada with some big plays wyoming has rallied back faces fourth and short when we return to reno [Music] it's fourth quarter and it's fourth down and aaron this distance in converting has been an issue for wyoming well they've struggled on third down i know this is fourth down but similar situation they're one for 10 on the ball game and the big issue has been on this down and distance they've been trying short passes little dig and dunk slams hitches and this nevada team is just sitting on the sticks so first thing i would do is i would try to hard cadence and see if you just get a free five yards and get the first down without having to run a play um and then second i mean don't be afraid to throw the ball downfield a little bit like i said these guys have been just sitting on the sticks it's williams and he's got the first down and he's inside nevada territory there's a lot of football left here in reno tonight and wyoming is showing signs of life that's a great job by this offensive line once again look at the big boy again out front erica beauje just like he did on the touchdown run and this is the part of the offense that they were missing with sean chambers now we're starting to see levi getting a little bit more involved in this run game you said it richard if they're able to score here this game is far from over here at the beginning of the fourth quarter williams have 32 yards on the six carries look out finds some distance there and a man and it's caught by treyton welch the tight end welch at the 22-yard line and it's a first down wyoming that's a great job by levi and the pucker they're moving around his eyes drop for a second because he's just trying to find a path to get up in the pocket get away from the defenders and be able to get up understand where his receivers were down the field but just watch this i mean he had pressure right there pressure in the face he's moving and grooving and then finds his tight end all the way on the left side great throw that just shows you his arm strength to be able to accurately throw the football away there in the left half from the 23 now of nevada wyoming on the move and now validate hops over a tackler and we'll get maybe a yard i mean the big difference of this offense these past two possessions is obviously the running ability of levi i think it's been really good two two big runs the touchdown and the fourth one and then him throwing the football and i thought that we were weird clamoring about the entire first half let's let this thing rip a little bit and i think emotion as well and amanda's report on on the chambers injury early in that first half and what it did to the emotion on the sideline maybe they have some of that fire back with him second down nine nevada's coming hard williams off his back foot and it's incomplete broken up there by imani johnson and he had gentry just that he saw the hesitation and and just unsure about throwing it right there he wants to throw it he wants to throw it and he's like and then that just allowed the db to get in there and make the play in the back end and had an opportunity right there but great play by johnson staying alive and then making the defensive play validate of course a force last year in laramie against nevada 58 yards on 15 carries this is third down and nine williams lobs it ends on caught touchdown gunner gentry here comes the cowboys and there's the shot right there these dbs they want to play a little bit of man-to-man and a great job by gentry you step on the defender he's sitting at the sticks and he runs right by him and we talked about on third down what are these big dbs been doing they've been literally sitting on the sticks saying you aren't going to throw behind us and his foot his feet got stuck in quicksand generally got right behind him and a great throwing catch to put them right back in this ball game extra point is good this looked like a blowout and wyoming is off the canvas with two straight touchdowns this levi williams to gunner gentry and it's an eight point game in reno college football on cbs sports network is sponsored by coyote we dig dirt by tubs goes to work in seconds for fast heartburn relief and by true listening [Music] this is really turned into a good football game remember jay norvell and nevada were stopped on a goal line stand in the first half they had a punt return touchdown call back in the first half they had two fumbles on drives they could easily have 45 48 points in this game and wyoming who was dominated statistically the second half adjustments offensively and defensively have flipped this game back almost even down a score 28 to 20 are the cowboys and their emotions is high right now as well this is bell weaving his way out across the 20 to the 23-yard line now let's see if nevada's offense has an answer and we're gonna see culture turner was a little banged up after his last touchdown catch and see he's back out there right now that's a huge addition to get him on the field and just get back to nice easy throw something that was happening all to start that football game i mean look at the first downs 23 to 10. they've been able to move the football so continue to do what you've been doing take completions take completions and then they want to come up and press you in man take some shots down the field attention mountain west coaches that guy is going to be a headache for you for the next couple years and that's cole turner turner almost held it ball looked like it might have been behind him a bit turner's on his way out and he's not moving real well right now no ever since the uh the touchdown catch he's been a little bit gimpy and he's had a tremendous game but listen they got plenty of other guys out there who are capable plenty capable of making big explosive plays and you know dubs one on one down at the bottom he's been a fan favorite of his quarterback and he's gonna have some one-on-one coverage right now from the 23 second and 10. davonte lee and wyoming's defense is fired up cole goodball who's been in a lot a sophomore out of hudson wisconsin and also in there cam smith who's made some big plays yeah good bose had a tremendous game and this is once again just like the last time this offense was on the field another big third down momentum type play offense has been pretty staggering here the last last couple series so they got to get on the field stay in the field keep their defense off and for wyoming energy they finally some excitement on that sideline let's see if they can continue to to make some plays on the demon side of the football third down 10. strong's been brilliant tonight 35 of 45. he is seven yards shy of 400 yards on the night has time short dump and caught there at the 22. what a play easton gibbs a red shirt freshman linebacker now that's a tackle that a cowboy would make [Applause] it's a great job coverage i mean they understand it's third in long situation we're just gonna drop back keep everything in front of us and then raleigh make the tackle and all of a sudden the three and out gonna get the ball great field position only down eight and i mean how how how things change so fast in football it's just absolutely amazing i mean you come out at halftime nevada's rolling they score in their first possession you're like holy smokes this game is going to get out of hand all of a sudden you string string together a couple of good possessions and you have opportunity to tie this thing up pretty fast get out of the way of that one 41-yard line this is going to be excellent field position the logo on the helmet if the logo on the helmet could make a tackle for the cowboys it would be just like that tonight's geico difference makers aaron we're staying with quarterbacks you'll like this yeah carson strong just shy of 400 yards most likely gonna pass that but he's been he's been tremendous 36-46 i mean looks like he's in mid-season form and has really taken that step from his freshman year to now his sophomore year and matt mummy has to be pretty happy with what he's seen from his quarterback so far and then levi williams really has stepped it up here in the second half got his legs involved big touchdown run a huge fourth down conversion and finally allowing him to use that arm strength to take some shots down the field tremendous throw on the last touchdown [Applause] in a much better second half for the wyoming offense and the wyoming defense first and ten williams is gonna pitch validate gets outside he races for the stick has the first down thrown out of bounds after 13 yards tell you what levi has been great i mean look at the throws down here we talk about his arm strength his size the strength and then running the football he's not sean chambers but he can do his thing and then on third down and long taking his one-on-one match up on the outside of gentry as we just saw this last play too you start throwing the ball down the field all of a sudden nevada jumped into cover two great opportunity to run the football and back into nevada territory almost lost the football williams stumbled around took a hit it's a good thing he's 6'5 240. that's just a little bit bigger than brent stover we're heading back to new york brad oh indeed hey i got a couple updates for you michigan and minnesota this is uh joe milton on the rushing touchdown michigan extends their lead in the third quarter to 42-24 and shane bouchelle to rasheed rice on this touchdown throw mustangs cut the deficit to 14-7 against cincinnati all right thank you brent this game has really turned interesting here 10 minutes left in the mountain west opener wyoming has rallied to draw within eight levi williams after the sean chambers injury has been leading this team validate to the 35. aaron you've been talking about the adjustments of the offense for this wyoming bunch and brent vegan in his six years and offensive coordinators done a really nice job in the second half he's done a great job of just opening up a little bit i think too early on there in the first half it was pretty predictable but obviously it's it takes some adjustment when your starting quarterback goes out in the first possession of the game but they started to open up take some shots move their quarterback around the pocket use him in the run game and all of a sudden everything else seems to start to work in as you become less predictable as a play caller validate for that first down boy williams really had to be mobile in the pocket throws a dart caught there at the 15 and down to the 12. another strong throw under duress from levi williams and it's the second time we've seen the two drives his ability to step up in the pocket and then calm feet afterwards it's so hard to do so many guys want to move and then they take off running but the ability to dip that right shoulder elude the defensive end and then just stay calm in the pocket keep your eyes up and throw an accurate ball down the football field it was isaiah nair with the catch it's his third valid day bounces outside gets tacked look out frank crum at 6-7 314 was ready to assist if he got tied up and needed an extra push [Applause] look at this last two touches eight plays 65 yards and here they are inside the 10-yard line of nevada lawson hall they've had more yardage and i believe in these last two possessions they did all the first half and then most of the third quarter i mean these guys have have found the secret sauce and really keeping this nevada team defensively on the field and and wearing them out a little bit now all of a sudden you're starting to see this offensive line moving guys again to the second level now that's lawson hall and this brings up a good point you just touched on uh wearing guys out remember this is the first game and they really didn't have the traditional fall camp lead up they had and in the fall camp remember you're not really going good on good or ones on ones as much as you usually do because you're trying to keep people healthy from injury you're trying to keep people healthy from kovit what and one way that norvell coach novell told us they were working against that is they would do a lot of extended drives during practice and they really want to see could guys handle eight nine ten play drives stay focused have the energy and and and they really even had been challenged throughout the most the first half and into the third quarter and now the sudden they're having to stay on the field for seven eight nine ten plays and and like i said all of a sudden now you're starting to see this wyoming off its line that was going to be the strength of their offense really starting to move guys and wear on this defensive front seven no touchdowns in the red zone tonight [Applause] williams quarterback draw this was a josh allen favorite play and he's into the end zone touchdown wyoming where do they mark him one official says touchdown and he is in touchdown and wyoming is within two i mean how fast do games change unbelievable i mean this is why you never give up you continue to fight in this running game really headed by levi i mean look at the big guys up front 79 logan harris leading the way in the gap pool when you got a quarterback that tips the scales at 240 and can move like this kid and and i can remember many games especially a snowy night in the win over boise state which was a hallmark win for josh allen of him taking that quarterback draw on a snow chamber chambers as well it's been a staple in this offense i mean have these big guys as another running back pretty much and you know they're going to take a look to see if he did cross the line but that's yeah that's a touchdown right there not so fast aaron murray that's a touchdown i'm one for two but i'm going to tap two for two tonight still gonna say that was an interception for wyoming nevada's obviously trying to pry the ball out at that point it doesn't look like his knees hit until after the lunge when we were gone between the third and the fourth quarter that guy craig bull was out of his mind with a motion on the sidelines surrounded by his offense remember they were faced with fourth down and three he looked ready it was it was pretty very much the offensive line i mean he looked at the offensive lineman in the huddle and then and challenged those guys he's like it's your time to step up it's fourth quarter let's go and on that fourth and medium they obviously had the huge run led by the offensive line and levi and then once again these guys have been paved in the way we've seen a couple good runs by validate levi's been running the ball well but this offensive line is finally showing us how dominant that that they can be right if this is a touchdown and they are going for two let's start the strategy talk because we we were talking about the uh third down and four was has been a problematic distance and this is essentially a short yardage snap here listen nevada has had no answer for for levi running the football in any of these gap schemes i mean go back to both touchdowns you're seeing offensive lineman wrapping around getting to the second level and levi using his his size to break tackles and get in the end zone so you know they've converted on the the long touchdown a fourth down this past touchdown i would do it again right now all right we didn't get an announcement but it is a touchdown and here comes the two-point conversion with williams in the shotgun validate is next to him for nevada they just need to load the box and see if they can stop the run but i'm giving it to your quarterback and letting him run this thing in hopefully to tie this one up two tight ends to the right side for two and a tie little jump pass and it's caught and it's tied treyton welch the ghost of tim tebow is alive and well in reno nevada i was gonna say minnie tim tebow but i think william is a little bit bigger than even team tibo is but they've had that one hidden away for this special moment right here but great job i mean everyone in the building i think was expecting run from from levi williams and defense sucked up he saw his opportunity to get to this tight end over the top and great jump pass there for the touchdown we're not touchdown but two-point conversion to tie this game up amazing all the points that nevada left on the table in the first half jump pass two-point conversion and a tie ball game in the mountain west don't be all right i dropped the name and look how quickly the crack staff comes up with this there's your tebow look at that thing the lefty making it happen for the gators and fast forward i don't know how many years since that occurred but and then tonight levi with the big two-point conversion i mean that's unbelievable i mean this team the lack of energy we talked with amanda about it midway through the third quarter and then all of a sudden just a couple big plays a couple big stops on the defense side of the football and we got ourselves a ball game you see the score by quarter nevada seven in the first seven in the second it very easily could have been 14 in the first 14 in the second they had a punt return touchdown called back they had first and goal in the one and wyoming had a goal line stand and they didn't get any points out of that that looks like a fair catch now you can hear yelling and whooping and hollering that's the first time i think i've heard some screaming and yelling from that sideline this entire football game so this defense has really come to play here in the fourth quarter and you know for nevada and this offense and strong and we talk about all the skill guys cooks and stovall and dubs and cole turner a great first probably two and a half quarters and have been pretty quiet here end of the third and into the fourth but this is a type of offense that can strike at any moment so defensively just don't sleep on them don't get too confident continue to play your positions well williams numbers looking better and better by the quarter now carson strong the sophomore who's been brilliant at times tonight fires boy cooks clobbered and he couldn't hold on and now cooks is coming off the field holding his hand it's just been coverage you've looked at this defense past couple drives they've been just dropping back cover two cover three less man the man and just keeping everything in front of him and then rallying to the tackle that's not a good sign you can see cooks heading to the bench holding that left hand second down and ten [Applause] avery morrow and the phil is coming a little sooner now isaiah's candy up from his safety position to make the stop almost uh in fact they were over 300 yards in their first half total offense for an event it was such a dominant performance the guy that's been a little bit quiet here the past few possessions who really has had a tremendous football game since romeo dubs we haven't seen him much here he's been an effective playmaker and they've kind of found a way to shut him down leaves in motion this is third and four and this is a flag [Applause] false start offense number 55 five yard penalty third down this is credit to the officials because we were able to do an early game in september and the handheld whistles were a little bit problematic i think almost all the officials that i've seen throughout the conferences have been able to adjust to that and there really hasn't been much discussion over it the last three weeks no it's been fine it was a lot of issues there in the first week but really like you said i've not heard too much complaining about it since then third down nine dubs has been a favorite target bottom of your screen strong in trouble and he's caught in drops victor jones the junior out of sacramento look at chambers in the middle of him don't step on my foot but great stop that's a great job by victor jones i mean he's the play maker right now on this defensive line coming around the defensive end using his speed and then once again this defense has continued to show up over and over again here just pretty much throughout this ballgame and they've kept the minute with turnovers with stopping at the goal line go back to that that fourth down stop you know they had three opportunities to vet a team from the pretty much inch yard line diaz kick crow oh crow let it bounce and now he's trying to run it down and he can't do it this is a mammoth punt all the way down to the 10 yard line [Applause] what a clutch hit from the senior julian diaz out of lincoln california wyoming lost about 30 yards right there by not fielding that that punt and not only does it affect your drive you know we'll see what happens but right now wyoming feeling pretty good has some confidence offense has been moving it see if they can continue the momentum [Applause] what an opener we have here in the mountain west wyoming has rallied to tie this game at 28 apiece we've got unlv in san diego state that is coming up shortly right after this one as the aztecs and the rebels open their mountain west season parker blackburn aaron taylor jenny dell standing by aztecs last season their defense always so good that's in all the football they give up just 75 yards a game on the ground it's tough to score against them as well for those of you tuning in for that game you'll be able to find it online at cbsports.com cbssn as soon as it kicks off and of course we'll get you out there immediately after the conclusion of this game right now wyoming after a 76-yard punt by julian diaz is backed up near their end zone that is a clutch kick it's a huge kick because now the sun if wyoming doesn't get a first down here is not able to move the football then turns around and gives nevada an opportunity with a short field late here in the fourth quarter to maybe put some points on the board to possibly win this game here late so for wyoming continue take some shots man don't be afraid to throw the football wyoming is taking care of the football offensively validate not much there i just don't we lost two play calls you know just a little bit too conservative i mean you've been doing well moving the football by spreading this defense out taking some shots and then running your quarterback i mean you have struggled running between the tackles with your running back day for most of this football game so now the sudden you're in a third and longer situation they're down 11 from the nine [Applause] williams has lots of time and a big arm fires it short oh it's picked off and intercepted [Applause] birds my goodness and just laid on the throw indecision there from levi williams you see him i want to throw it i want to throw it and then at that point it is too late and then what a juggling acrobatic catch there to reel it in from robins let's see on the replay the juggle keeps it alive still alive wow what a play and it's first and goal from the nine yard line for nevada still five minutes left here in reno we're missing some of his big targets right now on the field you know elijah cooks a hand or arm injury and he will not return it was on that last possession by nevada and cole turner's been banged up the tight end as well ray is hit stays on his feet and then he's overwhelmed and that's going to be a significant loss of yardage a loss of about six they mark it just outside the 15. it's a completely different defense than we saw in the first half yeah they've done a great job just keeping everything in front of them but it's been really the key preventing the big play down the field slowing down this run game but you know for nevada they're hurting right now they're missing two of their big-time players cole turner's out there like you said so is elijah cook so i still want to see dubs find a way to get dubs the football stove all in motion this is turned into second and goal strong lots of time finds a man in traffic caught at the eights marked at the six and that's romeo does that game in with unlv and san diego state is underway now available at cbsports.com we'll get you out there as soon as this one is over san diego state by the way is playing their home games this year in carson california which was the former home of the chargers for a couple of years while they build that beautiful new stadium for the aztecs down in san diego he was really good last year man and that 56-yarder was the game-winner against purdue here right now a quarterback understand third and long red zone just make sure you walk away from this series with at least an opportunity to kick a field goal strong has a man it's caught there ika he he full with the catch but he's short of the end zone which means it's fourth and goal man you got to kick the ball here and then you guys got to trust your defense even with wyoming playing well in the office of the football here in the fourth quarter kick it get the lead and hope your defense can pull out one more stop here talton of course made the game-winner hit his first 13 21-25 that is a all-mountain west pre-season pick and he's just a sophomore he didn't really know he was going to start that purdue game until the morning of the game and he knocks that one through so nevada is back on top but it's a three-point lead with three and a half left in reno in the mountain west 31-28 nevada on top 326 left come back by wyoming tied it at 28 wolf pack carson strong leading that drive they'll settle for three a couple things to think about here obviously wyoming's been moving the football pretty darn well here in the second half but their kicking game is not as strong as nevada even though their young kicker who was a walk-on freshman the number two kicker john hoyland has hit a couple from 26 and 36. and as aaron noted that 36-yarder had a lot of good leg on it yeah just something to keep in mind if this gets down tight and wyoming needs a field goal to get to overtime keys to the game let's revisit some of these and see what we're looking like and farming they started mixing up there here in the second half and they've had some success offensively and then defensively they've done a great job as of late eliminating the deep pass most of that was in the first half and then for nevada offensively run the football be a little bit more balanced i think they've done a great job 138 yards rushing and then defensively i thought they'd done a great job dominating the line of scrimmage if really eliminated for the most part the run game for this wyoming team levi's obviously had his his chances to run he's done a great job but you know i've done a great job really corralling validate and slowing him down and now they're gonna have a big challenge to see if they can hold one more possession here defensively now remember hoyland is the backup kicker luke classic the redshirt freshman out with a groin injury and they're all trying to replace cooper roth who is only the all-time leader in field goals and points and graduated after last year and hoping for a shot in the nfl next year williams fires one in and out of the hands of his receiver isaiah nair and there had company and once again just a little late i mean he had him on the the corner out there uh it's called a deep bench route a little bit of an instep in stem from the receiver then he's going to break it out about 18 yards on the sideline and just a little bit indecision uncertainty and that can go to just obviously first game he wasn't getting all the reps in camp and just understand the timing with his receivers and that will get better and better the more reps he gets with these guys especially the starting unit second down 10. williams fakes the pitch keeps it himself and puts his head down and he's got a gain of about six this is gonna bring up third down and four and this is interesting time too as we get lower into this fourth quarter and in under three minutes possible four down territory they've had success on third and medium running williams so i would not be afraid here to run them and if you make this a fourth in the manual situation to then go for it so defensively you got to be prepared and right now they're playing too deep it's a great time to run the football williams is going to run it and this one is going nowhere boy nevada was all over that there there's the big guy dom peterson haven't said his name too much here in the second half but making a big play right there and if you're wyoming you're going for it even though they've got all three of their ah now all of a sudden the punt team is racing onto the field they have three timeouts so they're going to need to stop nevada on downs burn the timeouts to get the ball back it's fourth and four [Music] fair catch called for and dubs makes it at the 24. so it all comes down to this can wyoming's defense get the football back we're headed to new york for this update guys unlv san diego state is underway in streaming live at cbsports.com cbssn they are three minutes into the game carter blackburn aaron taylor jenny dell are standing by with the call it's nothing nothing when you guys are done they're in reno [Music] thank you brent we're we're doing the best that we can we're trying to get you down there but there's a minute 54 left nevada has the lead in the ball wyoming has all three timeouts left so it's gonna be a while you expect unless nevada's able to rip off a couple of quick first downs here it's something you don't see much from this nevada team at quarterback under center i formation the rarity here for the airaid offense with a fullback as well this is lee trying to get outside there's the timeout you see craig bold top of the screen getting a quick timeout step aside it's a gain of seven second and three for nevada when we get back three-point game nevada on top but the correct down and distance on that was a three-yard gain so this is going to be second down and seven you know one thing they've had success with i know you want to obviously run the ball and and force wyoming to burn some timeouts but if you don't get the first down here they've done a great job on some of these receiver screens to the outside so that is a possibility easy throw easy completion and a chance to get a first timer right here in the eye formation looks like we're gonna get another run from out out of this offense remember elias five nine 235 pounds and look at that he is hit early and dropped [Applause] revonte holt in the middle of that defense and another timeout will return for third down at six after this [Music] well it's down to this wyoming needs the football their defense needs a stop nevada has third down and six nevada at their own 28-yard line jay norvell who had such a difficult week losing his father merritt norvell who was such a pioneer in college football and college athletics spent most of the week back at the services i i expect i mean be alert defensively for some type of receiver screen something easy completion strong on third and six it is a screen oh balls loose i'm not sure it was caught and it's incomplete and wyoming had the same scouting report you did they were looking screen but this one came from the backfield all right it's a huge play right there with the incompletion great job coming up to knock that ball out because now you know now these are a minute 40 to go but you save a timeout as well so that's huge play knocking that football out and and you got to feel pretty good right now and if i'm telling my punt returner just make sure you come up and catch this one we can't afford something to balance like the last punt and all of a sudden go 70 yards down the field and we're backed up even further not enough time or a football play for that to be a fumble no not enough time at all that was bang bang well diaz uncorked a 76-yarder two returners here for wyoming just in case there is a shorter punt most likely to be able to catch it this is a boomer oh no and it bounces by crow and it rolls unbelievable [Applause] i mean that's the second time crow's done this you gotta tell him you gotta catch the football i mean that's your job as a punt returner the ball's in the air there's your catch the ball there's your mvp catch the ball let's go the first one was 76 yards and again wyoming doesn't catch the ball and it rolls out of bounds at like the one or the two that's 71 yards i mean that's two plays back to back for this punt return team for for wyoming that has cost them a ton of field position i mean that's probably 60 yards of field position that has been lost these last two possessions um and all of a sudden it makes it a lot more difficult you talk about starting to drive it on the 25 yard line now starting up the drive at the one yard line so back-to-back punts of over 70 yards and now wyoming has one timeout levi williams is standing in his end zone and try to get it out of there validate busts one out across the ten has the first down it'll stop the clock that's a great first play to get some yardage to stop the clock it has a great run rich but i mean get out of bounds i mean those two extra yards that he saved doesn't mean anything but the time that they possibly could lose just gotta get out of bounds if you can williams gets rid of it it's incomplete second down and 10. you know there's an injured player back at midfield it is verdal robbins just got to his feet and is coming off slowly [Music] that's it it's a walk-on freshman who's a second string kicker who i wasn't really expecting to play today groin injury to the redshirt freshman they're replacing the legend that is cooper roth he's made his first two kicks as a college kicker red shoe and all and there's a long way to go aaron murray to get into field goal range but they still have that timeout and they're out from their own end zone if i'm defensive i've got it safety over the top but number five nair making sure that he's not the one making plays williams a dart and it's caught at the 30 that's a first down in traffic everhart holds on chains move 112 left right now they're gonna be playing two high safety so the middle of the field is going to be open so with the clock stop and don't be afraid to throw it over the middle williams time another dart did he catch it no incomplete that was trey and welch the tight end second and ten still a minute left plenty of time with one timeout to at least get in the field goal range maybe a little bit more difficult without some big chunk plays to score a touchdown but continue to hit the middle of the field they're playing a tampa two mike linebacker dropper in the middle i mean you can take eight nine ten yards of pop just have someone run right at the mic linebacker and sit and continue to take it down the field second down 10. nevada brings four out of the backfield valley is a good receiver and he darts out of bounds let's see where they mark him it's going to be short of the first down but it does stop the clock third down and three here as hoylan continues to keep the leg loose [Applause] third down three williams time over the middle caught there that's a first down that's nate weinman the tight end clock stops it's close to midfield they're getting closer 51 seconds left that's a soft spot right now they're playing a either a tampa two or a soft three insert with the safety coming down and just pretty much vacating the middle of the field and the flats at the moment that's a great throw and that's a late flag so that's going to be a game to the 40 and they're going to put 15 more yards and that's going to get wyoming right on the edge of field goal range i just love chambers right now just taking completion you know so many times young quarterbacks think they have to take all these big chunk plays to move the ball down the field but when defense is dropping like this they're clearly out of bounds after the play personal foul number 25 defense 15 yard penalty automatic first down that is aj king just keep taking completions keep taking completions all of a sudden we've moved from what the one yard line uh to the 25-yard line and remember craig ball told us with his young kicker he wasn't real confident from 35 yards out they need another seven or eight yards to give their coach some confidence williams may be going to the end zone he's hit throws it balls loose is it a fumble or a throw well wyoming has recovered it if it's a fumble that's a positive play for wyoming the clock needs to be running for some reason there we go now the clock's running and they call it a fumble and a recovery there you go all the time has got to call a timeout here i don't that looks like an incompletion looks like the arm went full yeah they could call this an incompletion and put time back on the clock get some more views of this to see yeah that's another thing too with with the quarterback you have to understand you cannot take sex in this situation i think anytime the arm is going forward it's uh the the famous tom brady roll the ball is going forward the ball is going for arm and ball going forward incomplete pass was the ball loose and then the arm pushed it forward though did he have control of it when the arm went forward yes yes that's a incompletion so you're going to get some time back on the clock as well but there needs to be internal clock inside william's head saying okay one hitch two hitch three hitch balls out of my hand now cannot take a sack in a two minute drive and you'll see right here they're going under the review to check to look at this thing right now this is gonna be i mean from this point on the field if they had to kick it now you're looking at about a 42-yard attempt there's still plenty of time though yeah and we'll see i mean would they get the timeout back to as well if incompletion you would think so yeah save them the time out and and some time well remember that they the replay review in the end zone that we thought was an interception that was ruled and incompletion did not go wyoming's way nevada turned that into a subsequent touchdown here wyoming is hoping for incompletion and the early indication we have our exit polls are telling us aaron murray incompletion and completion early early early voting has come in and uh it's looking like it's going to be an incompletion rich you know who's feeling a lot better right now is dante crow just breathing on the sideline like thank goodness we've been able to move the ball to uh to somewhat field goal range after you know allowing it to bounce to the one yard line on the punt return but we'll take another look at this but i mean from everything we've seen i've heard from our our great people in the in the trucks is this is going to be an incomplete pass so i'm sure they're just getting the time right now how much time is going to be on the clock and where the ball is going to be placed so look i mean plenty of time 37 seconds to go 36 seconds to go gonna be second down and 10. so they've reset the clock to 35 which is an early clue that yes indeed incompletion after review it was an incomplete full pass clock operator please reset the game clock to 37 seconds it will be second down and 10. he didn't answer the question at the 25 as to whether wyoming gets the wyoming will not be charged with timing yeah there we go here we go timothy davis way to go timothy davis he's been busy and this officiating crew on the field's had a pretty good night and and look first games of the year especially starting right out in the conference are not easy for coaches and certainly for officials because teams haven't had that game situation there's the kicker for wyoming he was not supposed to start and kick in this game he's a true freshman out of broomfield colorado john hoyland but he's made his two kicks his coach said i'm not real confident past 35 yards he did have plenty of distance on the 36 yarder clocks at 37 time out return wyoming on the move down by three williams steps up williams delivers endzone incomplete [Applause] third down and ten and now aaron tricky call here yeah this is tricky i mean you want to go for the first down and risk having a longer field goal or do you want to uh take a nice short completion and move this into more manageable field goal range and i don't know maybe i'm a gunslinger mentality but i'm going for the first down here i mean five yards i don't know how much that's gonna save you on the field goal you know try to go for the first down see if you can win this ball game then they can stay in the middle of the field they have a timeout can't take a sack williams throws middle of the field short and incomplete and now you're going to call upon john hoyland [Applause] he had him right there wide open just was able to step into his throw to put enough velocity on that one you got to kick the field goal here you definitely a 100 percent chance of making this thing last year cooper roth was their kicker his senior year the greatest kicker in wyoming history luke classic was supposed to kick tonight out with a grain injury so john hoyland the true freshman hey kid you're in and he's hit two but this is a bit of a stretch at 42 yards and it's it's time to ice the young kicker right here so a couple time outs make him think about it [Applause] they are reviewing this [Applause] jane orville and nevada had a big lead it looked like they were gonna blow wyoming out here's our first look from behind and that's incomplete [Music] [Applause] [Music] so they can still ice him even more the replay is essentially another ice he's looking up at the the clock right now saying ma'am get iced by this replay nevada has two timeouts to go you know if i'm him i'm going over the sideline i'm gonna go kick some more balls into the net just to calm myself down a little bit the ruling number the ruling on the field of an incomplete pass is confirmed all right well that takes the mystery out of it it's going to come down to a true freshman kicker who has made the first two kicks of his college career from 26 and 36. this is going to be 42 yards he is a walk-on why not give him a a little practice run that's a smart move by wyoming you heard the whistles well before the snap give the kid a you know a mulligan oh he has the distance i mean we've seen from his previous kicks that i mean he can kick it that far it's just obviously accuracy control and missed that one a little bit left but jay norvell and nevada last year won seven games lost a entertaining game against ohio in their bowl game in boise the last two years they finished second and third in the west and gone to two goals wyoming last year won their ball game both of these teams have been picked to finish near the top of the mountain west nevada has one more time out [Applause] coylan lines up 42 yards the snap hit the holder in the helmet after the whistle [Applause] so at least he knows he's not gonna sometimes i always wonder too if a kicker knows that you have a timeout to go if you just don't use it because they're anticipating yeah it's it's a mind game because he's anticipating okay they have one more he's going to call it so i mean how focused is he really do you just let him roll at that point i think for the kicker it's better now that all the timeouts exactly he knows this is it i thought my coach i honestly i if i had two i would use the first one and then make him think about the second one and not call it because like you said you said it best right there i mean now he knows okay listen there's no more timeouts i can just line up and kick the ball at the moment so i don't know it's all it's all mind games again we're going to get you down to carson california for unlv and san diego state as soon as we can 28 seconds left here craig bull jogs to the sideline his walk-on freshman kicker who wasn't supposed to be kicking today from 42 to tire snap kick is up and he hit it and it's tied oh my goodness [Applause] they're going to be people wearing one red shoe on their right foot around laramie this week 31 apiece moment for john hoyland and wyoming there's 23 seconds left hoyland the walk-on kicker and that lucky red shoe aaron murray is three of three in his debut he may be earning himself the starting kicking position after this game i mean he came in number two guy maybe he gets a scholarship as well it's a big night for the guy the right shoe is going to go in the wyoming hall of fame if they win this one tonight well when wyoming plays colorado state they play for the bronze boot maybe they can start calling this match up the battle of the red kicking shoe 31 apiece don't sleep on the return nick nola is the punter he does the kicking on kickoffs jamal bell flag is down and bell is out of bounds so it looked like a what a peel back block or whatever you want to turn it back at the 20-yard line and it did run a pretty good amount of time off the clock that's 15 seconds left during the return hold it number 22 return team 10-yard penalty first down all right the penalty is a hold but it certainly will bring the return back and it's a point of foul walk off all the way back to the 10-yard line so if you're in nevada obviously you don't want to do anything silly yeah at this point just just you know neil let's go to overtime and see what happens but what an absolute comeback i mean this these guys were no energy dead and and just not a lot of excitement on the wyoming sidelines and all of a sudden defense woke up offense started making some plays and i mean look at that fourth quarter numbers right there this team completely turned it around on both sides of the football it was just as much lopsided the other way in the first half [Applause] lee brought to the ground [Applause] and that's going to do it for regulation look i know that you fans couldn't be here you nevada fans that wanted to come out and the wyoming fans that wanted to travel and watch this game live i hope you're having a good time watching it tonight it's a whale of a football game we are going to overtime in the mountain west opener [Music] guys [Applause] it's a great bit of symmetry here sean chambers who injured that left leg third play from scrimmage captain has stayed on the sideline and comes out and there he is talking with carson strong the starting quarterback all right guys y'all play overtime all right in overtime each team gets one timeout for overtime after the second overtime you have to go for two and after the fourth overtime we go in the sudden death y'all have any questions all right all right you're gonna call it again yes what do you call it he said tails [Applause] has won the toss and we'll have defense we'll go on this end that almost went sideways didn't it did what what what nfl game was it that there was some confusion on uh yeah the detroit gaming thanksgiving yeah all right overtime rules ball plays to the 25 you you really want to defer so you want to know what you need for that second possession but then the the sequence of possession flips remember third and fourth overtime you gotta go for two and starting in the fifth overtime each team gets the ball at the three yard line and attempts a two-point conversion instead of a possession and uh don't put it past these two that we don't get there to the fifth overtime the way this game has gone and again if you're just joining us nevada was dominant in the first half but they left points uh on the field they had a first and goal from the one and they were stuffed they tried fourth and goal from the one it didn't get in they lost seven there they had a punt return touchdown called back they left seven there they had two fumbles on possessions one was a long one and they were in field goal range that's 17 points they literally left on the table all right here we go wyoming first possession levi williams has been good this is validate hit early and dropped good penetration there that's sam hammond the senior of yarrington nevada they really have gobbled up i mean you just you look at wyoming in this football game and when they had success they've had success when they spread it out they're not in the i formation and either levi williams is running the football or passing the football and just every time they keep going back to the side formation it's been unsuccessful so as you see right here getting back to 11 personnel three receivers on the field and see what they can do second down and two pros in motion williams peels out flips it validates hit stays on his feet but a good wrap up there by e.j muhammad that's a nice tackle by the senior safety out of bakersfield [Music] yeah i know your kicker's feeling pretty confident but i still feel like you gotta attempt here to try and get the first down and coming onto the field right now is isaiah nair number five he's been making some big plays down the field so gonna be interesting where do they put him right now if he gets single matched up down at the bottom of your screen i'm gonna take a chance on him he's big he's six three two ten this is third down in 12 four-man rush flushed running flips it validate gonna be short and nevada's defense is gonna force a field goal opportunity yeah that's all done by don peterson right there great job getting out for the quarterback making him escape out of the pocket and red chews back up again let's see if he can make it uh four for four in the night he isn't confident the last kick he made was from the left hash so he knows what he needs to do this is about a 38-yarder 26 36-42 3-3 walk-on true freshman look at this guy look at this guy ice in the veins give it to him a little he said this is too easy four for four he said i heard my coach said i'm not so sure if he can kick it from 35 plus or 40 plus and i'm telling you these kicks i mean not only are they accurate but he's got the the depth to put it a little bit deeper as well they may want to give them the scholarship between the first and second overtime if they win this game if they get there yes no no continue to make him earn it until they win the football game that's right you know if he gets a scholarship he may relax a little bit make it would make a nice post-game moment just saying yeah if they're celebrating the win uh you know that better be the first question amanda asked craig bowles so is your kicker getting a scholarship after tonight all right now obviously nevada sticks in the end zone they win and that's a guy that can get into the end zone he has two touchdown catches tonight cole turner has been on the bench almost for the entire fourth quarter he was favoring that lower back but he's back and it's first and ten and him and dubs are on the same side on the right side right now so i'm looking on that side to see if one of them can win carson strong looks he was looking for turner who's not open fires over the middle caught at the 18-yard line that's justin lockhart that's a gain of seven second down and three that's a great job getting through his read great protection up front and then find some time with his legs and then lockhart just getting big over the middle field wide open just waving his hands right here right here [Applause] cole turner's in that slot on the left side number 19. dubs dangerous at the bottom of your screen second and three lee has the first down hit hard there stays on his feet turns to the 14. as we've told you nevada has a terrific field goal kicker brandon talton may be the best in the mountain west even though he's a sophomore they're looking for six points here yeah they're not playing for field goal this is why this is why you want the second possession in overtime you know what you need you need three you feel pretty good with your field goal kicker now it's like all right let's let's let's just go out there and try to put seven points on the board or six points and end it right now of course a turnover ends it in wyoming's favor the touchdown ends it with a nevada win lee hand off little bobble there and lead to the 10 and he's inside the 10 down to the nine right now this defense is continuing to play cover two so take advantage of it run the football and see if he can continue to pop off four or five six yard gains and then if they're gonna want to play single high that's where you take advantage of some of the big guys on the outside second down and five the four yard line brings a first down the end zone brings a win gold turner right here big tight end he's gonna be match up with a linebacker you gotta take advantage of it in motion on second to five strong for the end zone it's a touchdown it's over romeo dubs and nevada wins it [Applause] romeo dell's been a little bit quiet we've been waiting for him to make a play and did he ever right there getting the gameway touchdown great design a lot of attention on colt turner he runs the inside post route grabs the safety grabs the linebackers and then romeo with the big post over top right behind him great job getting inside of the defender and then beautiful throw beautiful catch to win the ball game carson strong another touchdown throw and nevada who had this game in hand it felt like rallies gets that momentum back that young quarterback has a really bright future this was a fun ball game a great way to start the mountain west conference here cbs sports network for amanda guerra for aaron murray i'm rich waltz let's send it to carter blackburn aaron taylor jenny dale for unlv at san diego state thanks for being patient with us folks great one here and nevada wins in overtime
