it's already been a topsy-turvy opening weekend in the big 12. and tonight in lubbock it's the premiere of season two episode one of the matt wells era and the promise of success this year lies with new cast members and a returning quarterback [Music] you're watching the big 12 now on espn plus fearless champion taking the field texas tech to follow the first meeting between the red raiders out of the big 12 against houston baptist out of the southland from inside our charlotte studios denise shroff tom logan bill ian fitzsimmons will join us in just a moment luke's texas tech four and eight last year half of those losses by a field goal or less they were close and matt wells told us he's got a much improved roster from a year ago well and two of those four losses happened as time was running out listen this was a four and eight team a year ago niche but they're not a foreign eight roster in terms of talent this is a team that when you go into year 200 matt wells you feel really good about the returning components seven of the top nine pass catchers in fact pass catchers that caught 20 or more balls are back sir rodrik thompson the running back one of the most versatile players in the big 12 and of course alan bowman he's got to stay healthy but the red raiders six and three when he started their games in this conference if you have a quarterback you have a chance and texas tech has a chance with a healthy alan bowman for more on the texas tech qb we go to lubbock andy and fitzsimmons aneesh when you talked to defensive coordinators around the big 12 about red raider quarterback alan bowman you get a very similar answer when healthy he shows flashes of being the next great texas tech quarterback keywords when healthy let's go back two years ago against west virginia september 29th he gets rocked by the mountaineers suffers a partially collapsed lung he's down for three games comes back against kansas next thing you know closer 408 and three touchdowns plays well the next couple of weeks and then against oklahoma rocked again reoccurrence of that partially collapsed long fast forward to last year he's playing well early on and against arizona suffers a fractured collarbone in his non-throwing shoulder he sits the rest of the year they red shirt him and here he is back again getting ready to go at it and luke's i'm curious when you watch this young man when he's healthy what do you see when you watch him on film thank you very much and well i'll tell you what alan bowman anish this guy is a competitor and what competitors do is they strive to get better a couple of the things that he wants to work on this season is his pocket awareness and his pocket mobility not necessarily to take off and run you see the great numbers there when he's at the helm but that doesn't mean that he's been as good as he feels like he can be he wants to be able to step up while keeping his eyes downfield make accurate throws once he's out of the pocket but getting his feet square and throwing on platform more often than throwing off of his back foot he's missed 13 games the last two years when healthy he puts up tecmo bowl type numbers we'll get a look at bowman and this texas tech offense opening kickoff coming up with tom luginbill and niche schroth in our charlotte studios ian fitzsimmons in the 84 degree heat of lubbock texas light wind 36 humidity in the air and for texas tech they're about to open the season they will receive the opening kickoff houston baptist a game under its belt losing last week against north texas but putting up big offensive numbers like patterson sends it into the end zone the red raiders on offense first alan bowman back and healthy my name is alan bowman quarterback from grapevine texas it's special to play football this year just because nothing's been guaranteed we've prepared months for this uncertainties didn't know if we were gonna be able to play um just for the love of the sport just for love we could just get back out there you know it's that's what we wake up and do what we want to do it's what we love to do gotta love the passion for the game and this young man right here is the leader of an offense it's got an opportunity to be explosive and special look at the eye formation the triple t i have the old maryland eye to start things out and it's sir roderick thompson powering through this hbu defense all the way to the 40-yard line this year thompson the unquestioned lead back he morphed into that role sort of by default due to injuries last year but he's the back that never has to come off the field because he's so versatile you see him here out of the backfield [Applause] there's thompson out of the flat and that formation to start the game was a homage to tommy mcveigh 23 years on the texas tech sidelines a big part of this program mcvay passed away last month at the age of 76 calling that the t formation in honor of tommen mcvay a long time football operations uh administrator for four head coaches at texas tech going all the way back to spike dykes [Applause] good protection and bowman finds tj vasher a routine catch a first down for vasher who normally is a sports center top 10 in repose he is a big big play guy with a wide catch radius but the thing about alan bowman is he's so accurate he throws a catchable ball and i like that play choice to get into rhythm get some confidence early and move the sticks bowman in just his second career start threw for 605 yards two years ago that is a big 12 freshman record and he's one of just two freshmen in the history of the fbs with a 600 yard passing game he's going to take a shot downfield laying out eric who really emerged down the stretch last year another big target all six foot three 220 pounds now they're gonna hurry up get to the line of scrimmage but what a great throw over the shoulder along the sideline bowman end zone as who finishes it and what an opening drive for texas tech making it look easy early going here and again we we talked about the accuracy we talked about coming on air that you want to be on platform but you got to limit some of those off your back foot throws that time that looked like it was by design just a slight little shift to the left navigate the pocket make an accurate throw for the first boys of the season for the red raiders the red raiders a heavy favorite in this game but it had to have caught their attention what happened in ames earlier today what happened in manhattan earlier today that's why you want to play at night when you're having that opening weekend so your coaching staff can say hey guys pay attention to what just happened if you're not ready to play again just drifting out of the pocket a little bit and all by himself izukama back to back catches touchdown on the second one fast start and you're seeing the playmakers here aneesh for texas tech again ryan alan bowman excuse me he stays healthy this offense has a real chance yeah that's the trick to the season in this conference if you have a qb you got a chance and the red raiders know they have a good one if they can keep him on the field and in bowman's defense yeah these weren't little knicks he suffered a couple of serious injuries as a freshman a collapsed lung twice a broken collarbone last year go back to this catch and look along the sideline right here number one a tremendous effort not only leaving his feet but to secure the football get both hands under the ball so that when you come down and hit the ground the ball has no chance of hitting the ground azucar last year 15 for houston baptist is now wearing number 50. so that's christian gilroy wearing number 50. azukama last year as a freshman led texas tech in receiving yards the last freshman to do that in lubbock michael crabtree in 07. he's a pretty good one that's not bad yeah not bad just the biggest catch in school history first round pick we'll get to see this houston baptist offense in a moment and it's going to be very familiar to red raider fans there is a heavy cliff kingsbury influence on this staff and you'll see it play out on the field and houston baptist the huskies will take the field they've got one of the best quarterbacks in the fcs and bailey zappi is about to make the biggest start of his career and i'm really excited to be back on the field my brothers and coaches and we're all looking forward to these next two big games against fbs opponents dogs up he was a finalist for the walter payton award last year that goes to the best offensive player in the fcs and like alan bowman capable of video game numbers [Applause] zappy moving the pocket throws on the run nothing but black shirts in the direction of vernon harrell and these 62 pass attempts a week ago on the road versus north texas 480 yards texas tech knows they have their hands full with a wide open passing attack you're going to see as you look at the field these white jerseys are going to spread from sideline to sideline and they're going to try and get texas tech in space bailey's happy's just got to play pitch and catch a revamped texas tech defense they lose jordan brooks a first-round pick but they have used the transfer portal to bring in some impact former fbs former power five guys as ben ratzliff makes the catch a gain of a dozen rats left last year 1100 yards receiving and ratz left and jareth stearns houston baptist had the most productive receiving duo in the fcs yeah this is a dangerous tandem both downfield and also on some of the unique stuff behind the line of scrimmage like you see there on the jet suite tackled behind the line of scrimmage ian beak the junior out of katy texas luke's with houston baptist this is the first time they're playing a power five opponent in program history it's a relatively new program just their eighth season really their seventh season the first was a transitional year and they're only playing three games this year because the southland like many fcs conferences have postponed fall football zappy to the air incomplete flag down harold the target hoping to get a defensive hold here sure would be beneficial pass interference defense number 11 15-yard penalty automatic first down eric monroe the lsu transfer was in the secondary rotation for the reigning national champions last year see number 11 and he's locked in arm and arm of the foul correction he's locked arm in arm and i think really what you saw was the arm bar there impeding harrell's ability to get both hands up to try and track that football good call by the officials eric monroe brings a wealth of experience and i just think that winning mentality that championship mentality that head coach matt wells is craving with this program and now you bring a veteran guy that has that type of outlook a grad transfer he's already become a leader on that defense one of six grad transfers imported in the off season there is jared stearns who led the fcs in receptions last year with 105. well he's got some wiggle and i think if you can get him the ball in space as we saw right there he's going to at least make the first defender miss then he's going to have an opportunity in the open field and again you see bailey's happy in this houston baptist offense they're going to be in a hurry they're going to spread you horizontally and vertically and try and get you in space but bailey's happy's got to get the ball out quickly that's the key to deal with this texas tech pass rush zappy has played well in four previous career starts against fbs schools seven tds only one pick has time slings it to rat's left ball comes out at the end it's loose and the red raiders able to recover cosi eldridge falls on the fumble and if you're an mcs team trying to surprise folks but hang on ruling on the field is of a completed pass and the runner was down prior to losing possession of the ball first down houston baptist all right so they will rule rats left down was the knee down before it comes out ruling of a completed pass and no fumble is under further review that's going to be very very close again officials when they make the call they're not seeing this in slow motion initially officials will review big replay coming up we'll have the verdict on the other side so the last play will default to the ruling on the field which was that ben ratz left was down before the ball came out and the wording from the officials the play stands that means you had no conclusive evidence that the ball was out before rats left was down so you default to the ruling on the field and that's a break for houston baptist a huge break because this is a terrific drive for this offense and if you're going to go on the road you're outmanned you're the underdog you can't have a positive drive be taken away from a negative play so bailly zappy and company with a first down from the 25 of texas tech and it's ian beak i don't think you're going to see too much of the run game by houston baptist they like the throat in fact only one quarterback in all of college football threw the ball more than zappy last year that was washington state's anthony gordon well and this is a pretty active defensive front for texas tech and this is a rebuild offensive line much to the junior college ranks for houston baptist but they're probably not much of a match to be able to consistently run on texas tech tonight play clock down to three zappy over the middle incomplete a little behind his target and it sets up third down and you can see the command that zappy has of this offense he's got carte blanche to make all the calls at the line of scrimmage the play is going to come in he is going to decipher what he sees within the front within the back end you'll see him step up make some changes as he sees fit there's no wrong answer for him they're gonna leave it into his hands he's smart he's experienced and he is running the show red raiders last year struggled on third down let's see what they dial up [Applause] showing pressure four-man rush ball is tipped and it falls incomplete it'll bring up fourth down houston baptist kicker geno garcia has a strong leg but he missed three field goals last week and they left a lot of points on the board in that week one loss to north texas they really did but also he's been booming 57 58 60 yarders in pregame in lubbock prior to the game tonight so no questioning his leg strength the question is does it go straight up through the h the one make he had last week was from 50. [Applause] and a 39-yard attempt is good so a response by the huskies of houston baptist they marched down the field 53 yards in nine plays a garcia field goal and it's 7-3 see head coach vic shealy there for houston baptist he's got to be very very pleased what he has seen from his football team not intimidated answering the toll great drive this is exactly what you want to see out of your team sheila the only head coach in the program's brief history the red raiders volleyball season begins on thursday september 24th when they host west virginia they host west virginia on back-to-back nights before heading to iowa state the following week follow the red raiders all season long on big 12 now you can sign up at espn plus dot com slash big 12 now capacity at jones a t stadium about 15 000 it'll be limited to about 25 better than zero you want to have some atmosphere some enthusiasm the fans have an opportunity to enjoy it and they've done a good job of staying dispersed saying those staying socially distant so you can root your team on red raider ball to 25. i wonder how much of the crowd or lack thereof has impacted some of the games that we've watched iowa state for example home opener you can't feed off that crowd and then for the visiting team you don't have to worry about noise you don't have to worry about third downs it takes the home field advantage right out of the equation and then really what it comes down to is who can play their best without that fuel who doesn't need it who's going to take the field and make plays regardless of nobody being in the stadium roderick thompson on first down tunnels across the 25-yard line a gain of three well it didn't seem to affect this texas tech offense on the first drive bowman four for four showing what he can do when he's on the field make it five for five tj vasher with his second catch look how long tj vasher's arms are that is a wide catch radius so you have a big window if you're alan bowman to throw that ball into 6-6 vasher that one's intercepted picked off by houston baptist and we have the first turnover of the game isaiah cash the freshman out of georgetown texas alan bowman the texas tech quarterback has been commended for his accuracy it's consistent ball placement there he's behind the mark and what a big play that is made there and listen again when you're on the road you're outmanned when you have a gift handed to you you got to take advantage of it and listen texas technician they struggled with this offense on that first drive i think you take a shot right here if your bailey's happy and here's that kit lee the offensive coordinator at houston baptist zappy crunched back at the 45-yard line rico jeffers led the charge and jeffers takes the mantle from dakota allen and jordan brooks as the linebacker in the heartbeat of this defense yeah and listen they wanted to take a shot they just couldn't handle the pressure up front there's zach hitley who i just mentioned uh 2014 graduated texas tech you see that worked for cliff kingsbury and and really kind of gnashed his teeth in in this air raid offense up tempo offense and has been really successful the last two years here as the offensive coordinator big kingsbury protege zappy incomplete he wanted rats left and broken up by zach mcpherson the transfer from penn state kentley had an opportunity to work with patrick mahomes and and really kind of sit and just devour the offense absorb everything that cliff kingsbury had to share with him for one day he would have this moment to be a play caller and he has done a wonderful job with bayley zappy and this offense at the scs level has been lighting up the scoreboard and the statistical charts yeah kitly at texas tech when they had mayfield webb and mahomes [Applause] and a delay of game false start offense number 14. five yard penalty remains third down now false start it's vernon harrell you know i was about to ask you third and 15 if you pick up a chunk you're houston baptist you're playing three games why not right four down territory there's no there's no doubt about it now we're told during warm-ups gino garcia hit from 62. so to give him a chance you got to pick up at least a few here three-man rush zappy stands in he's got stearns and jared stearns takes it to the 40 do you try it from 57. yeah it's 57 but you know what are you fourth and 10 here if you feel that confident about the leg you give it a shot the problem is the accuracy has been an issue um in in the kicking game for gino garcia let's see if uh i got to bring out the punting team instead number 17 is now number 54. it would not surprise me if houston baptist has a trick up its sleeve here are they will just punted away it takes a husky's bounce and it's downed at the five yard line [Applause] we've all been through a lot of adversity in our country today is a great day to see college football back out there playing i'm a huge college football fan i want to wish all the players and coaches the best of luck this season especially coach wells and our texas tech football team matt wells told us that chris beard always talks to him about positionless players well said hey that's great in basketball it doesn't really exist in football but he's cross-trained his offensive lineman the linebackers and safeties have taken reps at both positions because in this climate with the threat of covid and contact tracing you can lose a position unit or a big chunk of it in an instant well you can and there's been more players taking snaps at center for texas tech than they've ever had before because if you lose the center or you lose two centers you've got big problems so roderick thompson b buttons out of trouble and picks up a first down close to the 20-yard line this is an o-line that gets one big player back in jack anderson at right guard one of the best o-linemen in the conference screen pass incomplete foreign but they've got two new faces at both tackle positions a transfer and ethan card from the junior college ranks at left tackle josh berger at right tackle was a two-year starter at wofford he's a grad transfer yeah and ethan card at six foot eight i mean he's a four to play three guy which means he's got three years of eligibility out of the juco ranks goldman wisely slides down after picking up the first down that's a smart heady play when you see the defense and they're in man coverage and the backs are turned to you the backs of the defenders sometimes when you don't like what you see in your progression just take off and run there's nobody to account for the quarterback hey gotta move thompson again you get the sense the red raiders are going to be able to run the ball at will at this game and i think they should with with an offensive line that they're trying to gel a lot of new faces we referenced the the two offensive tackles jack anderson's the guard he's the leader the returning starter but i would run the ball as much as the defense will allow you to so you can get in a rhythm create some bounce take some pressure off of alan bowman segunda giera one of the d tackles comes off the field last week when houston baptist played in north texas and they gave up 360 yards on the ground yeah and really the bottom line is you're outmanned up front and that's the difference between the fcs and the fbs level of play whether it's a group of five program or a power five program like we have with texas tech and vic shelly the head coach there at houston baptist he knows that as well as anybody you got to do everything you can to hold up bowman gets rid of it quickly the freshman from he's one of the best wide outs to come from that area and you know who else is from lufkin dez bryant and kiki cutie yeah and listen this is the next great space player in this offense this is the you know a lot of texas tech wideouts are big physical guys this guy is one of those guys with some wiggle thompson ambushed in the backfield and caleb johnson number nine the linebacking core for houston baptist is their strength johnson and young were the top two tacklers in the southland season ago yeah you know i think caleb johnson's got a chance he he may get some looks because of his range and versatility he can rush off the edge he can play in space just a good overall athlete hbu had three players with a hundred plus tackles and you know a couple of ways to look at that statistic got to play a lot of defense to rack up those numbers bowman quick release threads the needle to vasher and he appears to be close to the first down gonna be just shy third down well now we're getting into vassar's area of the field where he really excels and that's the red area because of his size and thompson playing bully ball looks like he's got the first down so roderick thompson sophomore from irving texas personal finance major and certainly he's going to be helped defense number 49 five yard penalty results in a first down [Applause] golden mason you'll see sir roderick thompson have a big year the healthier alan bowman stays because they're going to have to somebody's going to have to pick their poison in big 12 conference when taking on this team you know you've got a player under center but if he stays healthy now you got to deal with sirajik thompson and he is dynamic vasher lined up at the bottom of your screen flag is down [Applause] and the swing pass to taj brooks freshman from manor texas flag is down [Applause] offside defense number 49 lined up in the neutral zone that penalty is declined the result of the play is a first down so mason who's come into the game already flagged a couple of times yeah you can't keep shooting yourself in the foot i mean you're you've got to make your own luck and you've got to limit mistakes if you hope to hold up versus texas tech in this offense brooks [Music] [Applause] [Music] it'll be interesting to see how the depth behind is sir roderick thompson develops in running back looks good now [Music] brooks again and the freshman ahead for about a yard third down these aren't small backs is sir rodrick thompson six foot two ten taj brooks 510 low to the ground 215 pounds these are not only guys with quickness and burst but they're pile pushers 11th play of the drive hbu nearly jumped off sides again that was patrick wolfe who got back well it's given alan bowman a tell they're have they're having to now check out of what their plan was defensively because now texas tech's made the call to adjust here comes wolfe thompson angles in for six [Applause] [Music] again hand the ball off work the run game get a lot of touches with all of your backs that time it's roderick thompson again not a small back he's a big physical back but these guys are big playmakers in the backfield this isn't just a pass happy offense anymore we've seen a sampling of what texas tech can do offense an outstanding quarterback two big wide receivers and some power in the backfield [Music] 14-3 texas tech on top of houston baptist out of the south linda conference last red raider touchdown drive 11 plays 95 yards and sir roderick thompson punched it in i didn't know something about it now taken at the one yep and beak across the 15 flag is down that was an accidental flag so houston baptist will start at the 18-yard line [Applause] zappy the preseason all-american spirals it down field incomplete for dj dormius and we check in with the infant simmons the offensive court interview houston baptist guy zach kently has come home to texas tech he was a ga here years ago under now arizona cardinals head coach cliff kingsbury but i reached out to cliff earlier this week to tell me anything about kindly he said quote really really sharp mind definitely one of the brightest young minds in the game and that was apparent early at texas tech he did a tremendous job for us i know he had a big impact on mahomes development it was critical to his game it's to the point now where you look at zach kittley guys kingsbury also told me it's great that he it's great for the game that we have bright young minds like his coming up in the coaching ranks and as far as his relationship with patrick mahomes your super bowl mvp and quarterback of the chiefs he said look you know they have a long-standing relationship and they still stay in touch to this day almost weekly communication it's a unique relationship between he and mahomes and kittly guys that's a name to remember zach kittley offensive quarter houston baptist a rising star in the coaching ranks third and two that screenshot of the kingsbury quote houston baptist has to use that in every recruiting pitch absolutely josh alfaro stretching forward and he's got a first down for hbu you know when you have an opportunity to become a young coordinator and run the show and be able to kind of have your own stamp on things you know what the foundation is you know what the air raid is but he's added some of his own wrinkles too he's done a really nice job i think knowing what the pieces of the puzzle are at houston baptist what's the caliber of athlete they can get what type of player do they have access to and then building the scheme around that a really impressive young coach that's a program that won five games last year doesn't seem like a lot but again just the eighth season of existence that was the high watermark beak across the 30. and you can see some of the talent they're not great in the trenches right but you got a quarterback you got two really good wide receivers they're top running back drashon miniweather i'm missing his second straight game he's a force when he's out on the field yeah there's enough components here listen it's a small program you've got a stadium that's got a 5 000 seat capacity you do have some academic standards that you've got to adhere to so your recruiting pool is fairly small in terms of what's available to you five and seven a year ago as you mentioned a great quarterback something to build upon in the infant stages of this young program zappy near sideline dormius and bailey zappy is someone who is on the radar of nfl scouts and this is his first game against a power five opponent so when scouts are evaluating him this is the game tape they'll throw on they're gonna throw this on they're gonna look for poise they're gonna look for mental and physical toughness and they're gonna look for accuracy when under duress because as we've seen tonight he has been under duress well i like that play call really well executed that time they caught texas tech on their heels off guard a little bit if you notice texas tech's front four they weren't even lined up they're looking to the sideline really really heady play that time by bailey zappy the quarterback after the first down zappy to the air he's got time good protection and threads one to rats left flag down pass interference defense number eight that penalty will be declined the result of the play is a completed pass mcpherson the guilty party what did keith patterson texas tex dc tell us about rats left he said he reminds you a little of cole beasley the former smu star who played in the nfl 22 in white went to san diego as a walk-on then junior college nobody really even took a shot on him the penalty will be taken it's an automatic first down so they will take the penalty even coming out of junior college he didn't have a ton of interest division two and houston baptist yet he's become one of the top receivers in the fcs yeah cole beasley with the buffalo bills now but the thing about ratzlaff is you can't explain it it doesn't always make sense yet he just gets open he's mr reliable particularly on third down he's the ultimate possession weapon i think he might have a future potentially as an undrafted free agent that could work the slot not so much on the outside timeout red raiders yeah it's like the kid in math class where the the the math actually the work doesn't add up but he gets the right answer there's no question and he's so productive catches everything thrown his way last year he was involved in the biggest win in program history when houston baptist beat south dakota part of a 4-1 start this was a trick play he threw the game-winning two-point conversion and there was a lot of optimism early in the year they won four of their first five they were scoring 50 plus a game and the only loss was to utep an fbs school by two ian this is this is a young man guys who has this this young man guys who has had you know a rough start in high school and then not didn't get a single offer coming out of juco outside of houston baptist i talked to one ase scout coming into this game he said 22 can play maybe even a late round draft pick if not at least a worst case an undrafted free agent and he has an attitude about it when i talked to him in pre-game he said all i need is a shot houston baptist gave me a shot give me one shot to get an nfl camp and i promise you i'll make that team the kid is a fighter and luke's these days it really doesn't matter who you play for it's not like before if you're good you'll get seen you'll get seen and then you've got to find yourself in the right place at the right time [Applause] zappy downfield it's hauled in by jareth stearns [Applause] no they'll say incomplete this is a really well thrown football down the sideline over the shoulder and stearns oh be interesting to see if they give this a second look that one's at least worth the second look stern's part of a football family twin brother caden a defensive back at texas yeah on what is going to be a really really impressive texas defensive football team caden was a star as a true freshman a year ago for the longhorns red raiders see texas in two weeks and now a whistle maybe they will be looking at that last play prior to the snap delay a game on the offense five yard penalty remains second down our penalties starting to add up on houston baptist that was a bit of an issue last year as well they've been able to sustain some consecutive plays get some first downs move the ball but it seems the closer they get to the plus 40 the plus 35 they seem to struggle with penalties and then they get backed up and now you get second and 15. those are difficult lines to gain [Applause] rats left again and close to the first down he just always seems to be open yeah he finds a way to get open catches everything now he gets yourself and your third one this is definitely four down territory if you're houston baptist on offense you see him hurrying up here jaylen woods tackled for a loss fourth down do you roll the dice yeah i think you roll the dice but more importantly i wouldn't have run up run the football right there you're not equipped to blow texas tech off the football you ran up to the line of scrimmage you are ready to snap it snap it get the ball off to the perimeter you see the two receivers to the top the two receivers to the bottom you're not good enough up front to just run short yardage against texas tech that'll take us to the end of the first quarter alan bowman back and healthy after missing the final nine games last year for texas tech eight out of ten and a touchdown pass in that opening quarter texas tech pick to finish ninth in the big 12. there's much better talent on the roster than a ninth place team [Music] you're watching the big 12 now on espn plus opening weekend in the big 12 a few surprises early in the day with kansas state and iowa state both going down but texas tech they're aware of those outcomes off to a good start against houston baptist and a shroff top logan bill in our charlotte studios ian fitzsimmons down in the field in lubbock it's fourth and one for houston baptist plus territory they'll go for it and they should [Applause] zone reed zappy picks up the first down that was blaze benson i believe they're reserved yeah they're back up quarterback right who's a little bit more of a bowl in a china shop they're going to use him as a designated runner i like the design little misdirection with the jet sweep action watch the jet sweep you get some flow of the defense going with that then you get the action to the back and that tight crease right there and way to get north and south kid i like it now you convert bailey's happy comes back on the field and you're in business yeah benson a 6'5 redshirt freshman ian beak and that might be a horse caller eli howard brought him down at the 40 flag on play personal foul horse collar tackle defense number 53 15 yards added to the end of the run first down when you're just reaching and you're grabbing for anything you can get your mitts on if if he gets him by the shoulder he probably would have been all right but when you're on the back of the shoulder pad like that there is no other momentum or any other way that could have gone eli howard a sixth year senior came to lubbock as a walk-on transfer from north texas [Applause] stearns are you surprised how well this hbu offensive line is held up well if you've noticed you know texas tech defensively has been far more concerned about defending the past than they have having to defend the run so texas tech you'll notice a lot of black jerseys are not near the box they're rushing three dropping eight you've got five offensive lineman so they should be protecting well if you're not going to pressure the quarterback zappy to the outside he's got rats left but against a guy like zappy are you better off bringing pressure or dropping eight and maybe giving him a chance to pick you apart with more time [Music] personally i would come after him i'd come after him i'd overwhelm the offensive front and i would force these receivers to have to separate versus tight coverage tighter coverage than they're used to at the fcs southland conference level hbu two out of five on third down there's the pressure zappy gets away from howard got a block and fires to rats left who else for a first down how about that that's savvy that that subtle pocket movement you don't have to be a dynamic athlete of niche you have to be a good enough athlete to extend the play and buy yourself a second passing chance really impressed with this young man's poise and composure so far here through one quarter this is about to be the 16th play of the drive hey play keep away texas tech can't score if they don't have the ball he'll throw it's tipped and it's picked zach mcpherson comes up with the interception off the tip ball is that getting too cute at that end of the field i think so i don't know if you needed to do it you were actually having your way everything you dialed up was executed well by your football team and here's the issue when you run the double pass you're in practice all week long and you are stressing to stearns if it's not there throw it away if it's not there don't throw it if it's not there run and i'm telling you what every single time the guy's gonna throw it it doesn't matter if he's open and that usually means bad things are gonna happen now the red raiders will be backed up but they already had a 95 yard drive in this game this one starts from the one sir roderick thompson a little breathing room you go back to the interception the way zappy had been having his way a little bit with that red raider defense if you're throwing the ball that's the guy i want throwing the ball and look where the quarterback is at the top of your screen right there and this wasn't meant to be a throwback i think they thought they were going to catch them off guard into the boundary and the weapon would slip behind in the back of the end zone but that's not how it worked out that's jalen polk the freshman out of lufkin and a first down for texas tech the reality is houston baptist probably isn't going to stop texas tech in this game so you're going to have to go into your bag of tricks and play aggressively offensively but i also think you go into your bag of tricks if you have to they were executing moving the football throwing it that's a misdirection i just don't know if that point of the game there was a need to pull that trick out of the hat i'm with you after a three yard run by thompson second and seven [Music] [Applause] [Music] bowman checks down thompson on the screen and across the 25-yard line carter couch number 46. boy he's not going to want to watch that one back on tape he's caught no man's land out there in space somewhere that he did not belong gain of a yard for thompson second to nine see the challenge in east for houston baptist is they're not good enough in their front seven to not put an extra body in the box to try to defend the run yet at the same time when they do that now they're one on one on the outside and they're probably not talented enough to deal with this core of six or seven deep receivers at texas tech offensively so you're picking your poison on every down and forget the slot guys for a minute just the two outside receivers that are normally in there and azuka they're a challenge for anybody in the big 12. yeah there's no question and and so again very very difficult for houston baptist to make the choices they have to make on defense [Applause] plenty of time the fresh montage brooks he showed a little burst tonight see this is what i've been impressed with i was talking about the size you know this guy's 5 10 215 pounds so he can push the pile but he can do that too and you saw that we've seen the same thing as sir roderick thompson too basher juggled it and might have heard some footsteps with hargrove bearing down second and ten secure that ball before you look to make a move and get up field now for years in lubbock running the ball was uh it's just here for show well it was flare routes and flat routes and it was swing passes and it was it was an extension of the run game and instead of actually lining up and running the football and some run formations with personnel groupings that's what i like about this look of the texas tech offense 11 of 14 a touchdown and a pick make it 12 out of 15. no niece i think the one thing that if you're houston baptist you you actually got to feel pretty good defensive coordinator jeff mills he's had to have preached all week don't give up explosives make them earn it don't give up the 50-yard pass so they're forcing texas tech to dink and dunk here if they can continue to do that now all of a sudden you stay in this thing because it's not bomb's way over the top seth collins that last reception sixth year senior formerly an oregon state beaver third down that one land is incomplete and it brings up fourth and five intended for john holcomb the tight end you get a stop what does everybody talk about the big 12. all right tackles for loss three and outs and turnovers well houston baptist just played defensive big 12 football they got themselves they're gonna get themselves off the field here and right now texas tech hasn't had a huge answer for the houston baptist offense austin mcnamara to punt it away and jareth stearns to return fair catch made at the 11 yard line well look what we have here we've got ourselves a football game texas tech having to punt it houston baptist with the ball and they've moved it tonight the big 12 again takes center stage number one texas faces number seven texas tech still one timeout left here for texas tech eight seconds deep strike got the big mantras that is the greatest play in the history of texas tech football harold to crabtree and a stunner of number one texas it is the 25th anniversary of the big 12 this year as josh sterns makes the catch younger brother of jared the freshman well that's exactly what you've got to do that's the extension of the houston baptist run game we talked about that with the air raid and the mike leech version of it i don't think houston baptist can consistently run the football particularly between the tackles against texas tech but what they can do is get the ball in the perimeter quickly and let their best skill players make plays in space zappy in trouble throws it away third and six so you can live with that play though that's smart heady football with awareness of where you are as an offense you're backed up don't make a mistake with the football and give yourself a chance to play third down here [Music] jareth stearns who led the fcs and catches lined up in the slot to the top jalen johnson motions so trips to the field [Applause] and a whistle before the snap flag down prior to the snap false start offense number 22 five yard penalty remains third down so now it's third and 11 after the flag on rats left what a killer penalty because they had the look they had the play they wanted rats left on the slant route underneath perfect throw and he's off to the races i mean that's a foot race if that ball doesn't get blown dead due to that penalty again killer penalty when you're backed up you can't shoot yourself in the foot like that if you're used to baptists huskies need the 22. it did it again wow [Applause] offense number 22 five-yard penalty you get a little momentum your defense gets an unexpected stop right texas tech has to punt and all of a sudden third and somewhat reasonable becomes third and improbable yeah you're just going backwards this entire drive and it's it's been your own self-destructive mistakes [Applause] red raiders drop eight zappy has to throw it away and it's fourth down see this is where the momentum could change in a huge way for texas tech and vic sheely the head coach uh ed houston baptist knows it is you don't want to get backed up and have to punt out of your own end zone versus an offense like texas tex because another score goes on the board now this thing can get away from you blake patterson to punt an all-conference punter last year and the red raiders will have outstanding starting field position in plus territory up 14-3 games hundreds of olympic sport events original content press conferences and much more penalties took houston baptist back on its last drive they punt and the red raiders begin at the huskies 42. alan bowman 12 out of 16 coming back from injury he told us he could have played late last year as we get another penalty marker but elected to red shirts in instead false start offense number 70. five yard penalty first down sophomore left guard west and right tell you what everybody between both teams they're rep roaring and ready to go have multiple procedure penalties between both teams here in the first half how much of this is just not having the usual amount of live reps leading up to these games that and just yet knocking the rust off a little bit and you know first game jitters to some degree too a gain of about a yard tackled by caleb and johnson caleb johnson number nine as we mentioned the best player for this houston baptist defense you talk about stacking and shedding and plugging the hole that was a really nice job limiting the yards after the line of scrimmage keyshawn carter on the fly sweep and he picks up a big chunk back to set up third and manageable that's where this texas tech team can really spread your thin sideline to sideline because they've got speed to get to the perimeters you saw there now you rely on the other targets to block on the perimeter for you they did a really nice job putting them in third manageable brooks able to move the chains now that's kind of the dichotomy of this game houston baptist has a three-game season they're not leaving any money in the bank texas tech in two weeks begins conference play nine of their ten games in league you expect them to be a little vanilla in terms of how much they show there's no question that's a nice completion there carter once again had a huge game against texas to finish last season 11 catches 150 yards good accurate throw and you get the first down so quickly get to the line of scrimmage to snap the next play brooks got a couple and then driven back by bowel and wallace and see that's really what tempo offenses are all about because what you want to try and do is get the first down and then quickly get to the line of scrimmage so defenses can't substitute personnel and you might catch them with the wrong personnel on the field and have a big advantage in the red zone 6-6 tj vasher lined up at the top of your screen always a threat play clock at two bowman looked off basher and incomplete wanted a third down really nice play good play the p by pbu by kenneth kemp number 20 the corner timing it up knocking that ball an injured houston baptist player will step aside 6 41 to go first half you're watching the big 12 now on espn plus coming up at halftime we go all access with matt wells wait till you see what he has to say about applesauce plus highlights from the day in the big 12. a couple of upsets early oklahoma and texas taking care of business late and we preview the first week of conference play in the big 12 that is in two weeks texas will take on texas tech red raiders at the 15 yard line facing a third and eight here's the blitz bowman gets rid of it quickly he's got vasher reaching ball comes out it's picked up by houston baptist and trey fluellen but a vasher broke the plane it's a dead ball and a touchdown no question ruling on the field is a completed pass and the runner was down prior to losing control of the ball it'll be a first down texas tech oh there is a question too where he was down where was he down and where was the ball yeah they've got to review this remember on the field of a completed pass and the runner down is under further review if vasher is not down and the ball crosses the goal line the ball is dead and it's a touchdown correct how hard to tell from that angle i don't think that there's anything conclusive enough to overturn this this angle may say different i think he's down right about the one and a half yard line let's see he's down his hips down right between the one and two yard line luke's i couldn't pick up anything conclusive that's going to overturn the field [Applause] campaigning for the touchdown why not he's so dang long that he's figuring in his outstretched arms you see matt wells talking to him saying hey do me a favor and secure the football please they're checking to see did the ball already cross the plane when his stomach hit the ground so let's see if we can time this up get a real sharp look there's his stomach see that angle is difficult because that angle niche isn't down the line of the goal line we're at an angle right there so again is that indisputable video evidence to confirm that the ball crossed the line at that angle i don't think it is and replay officials are using the cameras that we give them correct after reviewing the play the ruling on the field stands as called first down texas tech and stands means there was nothing to change the initial ruling or to overturn it so you're in that gray area again you need indisputable video evidence to change a call either way it's a productive play a 14-yard catch and now four chances from the one-yard line well executed by texas tech and well-executed by the officials brooks the tailback and taj brooks the freshman in for a touchdown [Applause] really no other play call to be made one yard get the inside zone let's win up front which they did he sneaks through the crease on the back side again taj brooks just a freshman 5 10 215 pounds the tandem of him and rodrick thompson it's a one-two punch it's gonna be quite formidable i had a pete carroll joke ready to go you did you said there was no other play the one-yard line red zone touchdown scoring 55 last year three for three so far you really have three new starters on the offensive line a couple of new tackles and we wondered what the running back depth would look like behind sir roderick thompson yeah so they brought in jadarius townsend from alabama as a transfer we haven't seen him yet right and right now it looks like brooks is the clear-cut number two there's no question they do not have xavier white in his services tonight but uh i i would imagine we're gonna see chad darius townsend uh later on if this thing keeps keeping pace the way it has so far i think it scores a round to the big 12. you know it's interesting because in the early games iowa state goes down kansas state goes down we were talking about this before we went on the air you hear coaches in the ncaa basketball tournament often say on those first couple of days you want to play late because if there are upsets earlier in the day you can tell your team hey look what happened to them because they overlooked an opponent oklahoma texas clearly not looking at the names of their opponents jerseys iowa state really just terrible special teams today and kansas state going down to arkansas state as well first and foremost both of those programs are so dang well coached 100 and i expect both of them to rebound and play good football this year but also common denominator with both of those teams iowa state up front in their offensive lines lost 144 career starts that they had to replace and kansas state did not replace a star did not have a returning starter in the offensive line so you're talking about the core of your your offense having to be rebuilt so they'll get better defenses were ahead of the offenses in the big 12 outside of what we've seen from oklahoma and texas and texas tech tonight flag is down that play wasn't going anywhere to begin with rico jeffers who's paying rent to the backfield ball start on the offense all 11 players were not set prior to the snap five yard penalty replay first down so that's on everybody we mentioned jeffers being the leader of this texas tech defense they added some pretty big imports to the linebacking corps for sean merriweather led all junior college players and tackles college schooler who is not playing today three-time all-pac-12 selection we were told he's out we weren't told why given what's going on around the world around the country i think you can read into that perhaps you'll hear a lot of teams i think this year tell you that a player is unavailable but won't give a reason don't ask um but that listen you're right they added some bulk they got bigger they got older even without colin schooler tonight and chris john merriweather this guy's a difference maker and i know they lost a first round in jordan brooks but matt wells said this kid is tough he's strong plays with great passion they they think in time he may be the next jordan bro they lose brooks but they've upgraded the entire unit pressure coming and howard got his mitch on it it sets up third and five and uh the pendulum is swung now in favor of texas tech after houston baptist on their last drive had all those penalties and you see the tweak now that keith patterson the defensive coordinator texas tech is making he's backing off defensive lineman to the field to hopefully get in those throwing lanes if bailey's happy to tip a ball and i was perfectly executed in that instance [Applause] over the middle and zappy finds an opening dj dormius sophomore from colleen first down that's a savvy player bailey's happy you see the shoulder shrug to the left to get him to jump the the the bubble route and throw the slant underneath and then he caught him sleeping dormius being chased from behind will anybody catch him no and houston baptist with a 65-yard touchdown pass zappy to dormius back within two scores listen you get the first down you get some yards after catching them what do you do you immediately run to the football and you take a shot you see the stacked receiver alignment up top and he just cut the defender just gets caught peeking in the backfield daedra on taylor demerson and that's what happens when you're looking at the quarterback and you're guessing and you're not playing your technique extra point by garcia is good 21 to 10. oh bailey zappy came in with a lot of hype pre-season all-american one of the top qb's in the fcs [Music] a 65-yard touchdown catch from dj dormius into just when it looked like texas tech had a chance to put some separation and maybe put houston baptist away the huskies find an answer the huskies find an answer because they were dictating tempo and caught texas tech off guard and on their heels following that big conversion for the first down really the key play in this game houston baptist within striking distance opted for a wide receiver pass that was intercepted in the end zone taking away a scoring chance otherwise it could have been closer well take a look at this aenation this is what going fast after the first down will do to you look at texas tech this safety is trying to get himself over here but he's late okay so you've got all these defenders lined up and there's nobody to the top of the field you've got two on one right here texas tech is so far out of alignment they've got no chance to recover you see the ball get snapped the safety is running over the top late the corners in the flat he actually was not wrong there after further review excellent execution and use of speed by houston baptist our first look at chadarria's townsend transfer from alabama where he was sparingly used as a running back and wide receiver and a big-time recruit coming out of high school [Music] bowman finds polk third and long see those are the types of tackles that you you've got to make if if trey flew ellen number 17 in white you make that now it's another three yards tacked on to that still nonetheless third and eight houston baptist jacked up on defense right now fluella one of three players with 100 plus tackles for this defense last year [Music] [Music] bowman looking long and he overshot his target dalton rigdon and it's fourth down and boy we talked about the pendulum shifting a few minutes ago it has shifted again houston baptists playing big 12 football get a stop they get another stop going to give them an opportunity to get the offense back this ball just needed a little bit more air for alan bowman if he throws this a bit over the top and leads across the middle of the field that's six running away austin mcnamara on to punt stearns the fair catch makes it inside the 30. 404 to go in this opening half and listen it's not out of the realm of possibility that houston baptist can move down the field and get a few points before halftime look at other players look at the hop in their step they've got enthusiasm they come running out to the ball they're sitting there going we're in this thing and now what they've got to do and listen everybody in the stadium the hot dog vendor the guy selling coca-cola everybody knows they're gonna throw it including texas tech so pick your spots and and and i think you dink and dunk texas tech here just move the ball and get the ball to the space in perimeter low snap and they run it beak and maybe that surprised them because everybody is expecting pass well again you got the three-man front you're dropping eight you haven't had to defend the run all night and you're right zach hitley the offensive coordinator telling his team hurry up and get the line of scrimmage zappy incomplete third down now this is a big third down in this game you move the chains you keep the ball you give it up and texas tech comes down and scores that takes the wind out of your sails yeah there's no question about it it was actually very fortunate that they didn't catch that ball right there probably would have been tackled for a loss [Music] [Applause] zappy to throw he's got stearns who gets the corner where did he step out of bounds he's got the first down right at the 40. i'm wiping my brow on that one and these i was like get up field get up field kid um i really like that bunch of set that we saw the three receivers clustered together and then all of a sudden you throw the ball into the flat you're able to make some picks there with the other two receivers create some open space similar look here three receivers bunched to the boundary beak and he's taken down by nelson and banasaur who had the best training camp of any texas tech d lineman coach matt wells uh couldn't say enough good things about him said he's in shape his motor's outstanding and listen we're talking about some defensive linemen within the big 12 and a few of them between eli howard and bannosaur jalen hutchings number 95 the big nose guard they're a pretty disruptive group up front low snap heads pressure from howard zappy throws on the run and able to complete a first down plus territory and it's the freshman tyson thompson there is something scrappy about this houston baptist team i tell you luke's yeah and the quarterback's got some moxie does a really good job keeping eyes down field when he's been flushed from the pocket going quickly again after the first down over the middle that's josh stearns up bended inside the 25. listen 225 left now you're in four down territory potentially and keep in mind houston baptist deferred so they get the ball to open the third quarter zappy wants six wants harrell and it's broken up a touchdown saving deflection by cosi eldridge this ball's up there that ball should have been caught i thought eldridge got his hand on it he did not should have caught he did not he had he had his hand in late but did not interfere with the ability to catch that football he just lets that get outside the left shoulder between the forearm and the elbow vernon harrell who got hurt early in the north texas game missed opportunity for houston baptist zappi under pressure and sacked howard and hutchins in the backfield and howard moves into the top ten now career sacks at texas tech was able to collapse the pocket there with just a three-man rush not expecting that up front is this four down territory i think potentially especially with this time left on the clock let's see how much they get it back here it might be a free play passes batted down [Applause] offside defense number six five yard penalty replay third down that's fantastic now you get the clock stoppage you get the the the five yards back and i i think bailey's happy trying to get a little greedy there sneaking one in and again you watch the the adjustment that texas tech has made in their defensive front dropping some of their defensive line to try and get into the way of some of those throwing lanes i don't think anybody expected this to be this close at this juncture of the first half absolutely not and houston baptist can make it even a little closer [Applause] a three-man rush zappy looking and complete it's rats left at the 10. first and goal hbu the riverboat gambler slinging it and again not a dynamic athlete just a good enough athlete to buy a second passing chance does a wonderful job of keeping his eyes downfield and a whistle a timeout by matt wells in texas tech one left prior to the snap texas tech calls their second time out of the half it'll it'll be 30 seconds why is this game the game clocked to one minute and 24 seconds luke's why is this game so close texas tech has not come up with a consistent answer to get this houston baptist offense off the field who's the team that's gotten the three and outs it's been houston tactus on defense so bailey zappy's been the reason why this makes to make that completion so he's got some nuance to his game as a passer we've seen him change arm angles we've seen him change ball speeds and we've seen him show real savvy pocket mobility this was a kid who only had one division one offer fcs nfbs that was houston baptist coaches loved his competitiveness they told us he's a kid that would cheat at checkers if he had to in order to win first and goal ian b taken down at the six yard line by chryshon merryweather the impact the junior college transfer yeah and that's where you wish speak as a as an upperclassman would have bounced that to the edge and gotten out of bounds instead of cutting it up inside i understand he's trying to get yards get downhill but they could have really used that clock stoppage right there huskies do have all three timeouts yeah they've managed the game well to this [Applause] point [Applause] another low snap zappy rolling right now changes direction they'll try to run zappy diving out of bounds the clock will stop with 34 seconds it'll bring up third and goal after a run of three you just love the toughness of this guy but here's the issue that they're going to run into the closer you get to the goal line the worse off they are because they flat can't run it and so they're going to have to get created how creative here i wouldn't be surprised if we see some of that bunch package where you've got the cluster of the receivers tight to the offensive and defensive line because running it between the tackles is going to be a tall order if they want to get the ball in the end zone here remember last time they were close they tried a variation of the philly special and it turned into an interception zappy nearly intercepted in the direction of stearns well i tell you if he would have been able to hold on to that ball for a split second more he had a receiver in the back of the end zone that would have come wide open as texas tech oh man and now a decision for vic shealy houston baptist their first of the half it'll be 30 seconds in length see the bunch set right here you're gonna see number five right there now he's gonna go to the back of the end zone and the defenders run into each other that's what the bunch set can do it can get you crossed up but listen if i'm vick shielding the head coach at houston baptist i've deferred no i'm kicking it i'm gonna kill i want points be 21 to 13 i'm getting the ball coming out of the third quarter if i don't if i don't get points here points are at a premium you're on the road you've got a chance to be in this football game and take the opening kickoff now a lot of people say well go for it go for it go for it i don't know if you can afford to give up these points the issue last week against north texas in what on paper looks like a lopsided defeat was all the times that houston baptist left points on the board right now they were stopped in a goal to go situation missed three field goals it kills you and i i think that's the thing that i would be worried about here and listen i admire this call but man i tell you what jared stearns is stopped i'm with you luke's your halftime message could easily be to your locker room look we can hang with these guys our defense has gotten stops right we can move the ball when you try a trick play late when you go for it on fourth and goal from this end where a field goal makes it a one score game and as you mentioned you get the ball it reeks of a little desperation which again might be fair given the mismatch between these teams but the first half has told us that houston baptist with a game under its belt can hang absolutely and again i admire the call i don't necessarily disagree with it i just think with the right tackles we've seen who who came up hobbling there we got 72 yeah nathan beveridge it was a reserve right tackle was in on that game has had an unbalanced line i think they had extra offensive lineman in the offensive set but again getting back to the call i i can understand it but if you're gonna give your team the best chance to win i think you've got to get you got to take the points right there and okay listen could you have the field goal blocked could you miss of course you could but are those percentages better than being able to run the football texas tech which you've shown no ability to do to this point looks like he's getting oh gets rolled up right there on the left ankle just 72 and good to see him pop up and get to the sideline now vic shilling's probably going to tell his team listen we left two touchdowns on the board out of the first half absolutely we tried to get cued on one of them and we also decided not to kick a field goal on the last bowman plunges forward [Applause] has some room to breathe vic shelly the only head coach in the history of hbu a program that's been around for less than 10 years [Applause] this is their first power five game they've given texas tech all they can handle in this first half well they have and they've got texas tech's attention and to your point they've played a game they've been through game conditioning texas tech this is their first time out and they're to have to make some adjustments on defense ah if if i'm keith patterson the defensive coordinator you might have to make the decision start coming after bailly zappy a little bit 21 to 10 texas tech on top and it'll be houston baptist that receives the second half kickoff alan baumann 15 at 21 190 yards ian fitzsimmons with matt wells coach it's a very it's a very coachable first half you have a lead right now but a ton of mistakes as well assess what you saw in that first half yeah a few things on defense we hurt ourselves with ian um but a hell of a you know a goal line stand right there offensively it was kind of like we we hurt ourselves we moved it we had a ton of yards but there should be at least one more touchdown on the board on offense but we've been running the ball pretty good biggest thing going into the second half your message to the team to make sure you come away with a big win tonight yeah we got to just put a few series together on offense we got to have some stops on d okay don't have any turnovers yet we got to create some turnovers thank you coach okay thanks man in a game that is a lot closer than most people expected at halftime it's still a game in fact texas tech up 21-10 at halftime with tom logan bill and niche schroff in our charlotte studio ian fitzsimmons is in lubbock dj dormius running to el dorado houston baptist hanging with texas tech alan bowman back after missing the final nine games due to a broken collarbone last year injuries have plagued him in his two-year career with texas tech but boy when this guy is healthy as he's shown in the first half today and as he's shown in the past he can put up video game type numbers well he can and he also puts up wins six and three as a starter and that's what was what matters most in the first half today bowman 15 out of 21 190 yards and a touchdown pass we're back with the second half kick [Music] i can't wait to tell everyone about att's big 5g news att has nationwide 5g yep and that's faster faster but is it reliable uh-huh and secure you should consider making a big deal about it bigger i said bigger oh deal bigger than what i'm doing it's not complicated a 5g network needs a 5g device now well now on espn plus in a shroff tom lugenbill from our charlotte studios ian fitzsimmons is in lubbock halftime score texas tech 21 houston baptist 10. part of the big 12's opening weekend they didn't play last week as close as the game is which is a surprise it could have actually been closer well there's no question and really the difference in the first half has been red zone production texas tech's offense has been down there three times has come away with three touchdowns one through the air two on the ground the ground game has been productive and they've been able to run it it will every time they've decided to but it's been the miscues on behalf of houston baptist two trips to the red zone zero touchdowns that's the difference in the football game right now really nothing else to it bailey's zappy did find dj dormius on a big 65-yard touchdown 21-10 your score ian fitzsimmons uh caught up with vick sheeley what'd you find out of him wait the number one thing he said is when we get in the red zone we have to come away with points but he loved going forward on fourth down luke's i know you didn't like it there late in the first half you wanted points but i i personally like the opportunity of saying hey it's a shortened season we're on the road against a big 12 opponent let's go forward he said when it comes to that kind of attitude he said the second half we have a short season for our seniors for all of our players look there will not be anything left in the playbook everything is on the table for the second half when it comes to houston baptist guys and i i don't necessarily disagree with that if the score would have been 28 nothing 35-00 but they're in this thing and getting the ball coming out to take the opening kickoff to start the third quarter if this thing's 21-13 you don't know where this thing goes in the middle of the fourth quarter that three points may be the difference in the game who knows at the start of the game you would have said hey go forward on fourth down every time but houston baptist learned in the first half and maybe things change in the second half but in the first 30 minutes they found out they could hang with a big 12 team on the road yes and i'm very interested to see what the halftime adjustments have been made by keith patterson the defensive coordinator at texas tech he can no longer just rush three drop eight they have not responded well in that regard they've got to come after bailey zappy a little bit more in my opinion that'll be a touch back from trey wolfe and we get to see zappy and this offense bailey zappy from victoria texas really didn't have much interest coming out of high school houston baptist his only offer he's become one of the top quarterbacks in the fcs last year led the nation in touchdowns completions and attempts and was second in passing yards well and he runs the show once that play comes onto the field he's determining whether they got to get out of that play to get into a better place determining all the looks communicating up front communicating with his targets he is running it yeah it's a cliff kingsbury offense quite literally zach kitley the oc was with kingsbury at texas tech for a number of years and ian b got first down picks up about five they'll take that every every day of the week and they really have not even had much of a threat of a running game none and you know what they haven't really needed it they tried beak again he ran into a barricade got a couple third down if you're keith patterson now do you bring pressure i think you've got to choose to do that at some point this may not be the down to do it because you you know you can't afford to give up an explosive especially right out of the gate when the game's this close three-man rush zappy has time floats it downfield caught by harold and vernon harrell with a first down near midfield no i go back to our play breakdown in the first half of changing ball speeds the ability to add touch to a throw this was really impressive now again you get the first down what do you do you quickly get to the line of scrimmage force texas tech to get set changing speeds why is that such an attribute for a qb because you've got to be able to place the ball in certain spots and if you can't change the arc on the ball all right then you're not going to be able to make every throw on the field [Applause] that one had a little bit more zip and it's jared stearns one of the top receivers and all the fcs when you watch zappy is this a kid that can start for a power five i think depending on the program potentially yes group of five absolutely uh i do think this is a very very quarterback friendly scheme they've got good personnel around him and listen this isn't just bailey zappy and houston baptist coming out looking like this on the road against texas tech this is a young man that threw for 480 yards a week ago put up 31 points against a north texas team that was pretty good last year [Applause] and a flag down might be a delay of game here prior to the snap delay again offense five yard penalty remains first why does that happen when you're a tempo offense sometimes when you're a tempo offense it's not about running plays quickly it's about getting to the line quickly seeing how they line up maybe you can catch them off guard which we've seen houston baptists do and then it's about stepping away and then trying to get the perfect play which sometimes there isn't a perfect play and you lose track of the game clock and zappy into the embrace of big number 98 nick mccann his helmet comes off no flag so by rule he has to come out of the game for one play unless houston baptist burns a timeout and you don't want to do that here and again that's having that delay a game now you've got a sack bailey's zappy feels like hey they're tugging in my face mask and taking my helmet off he didn't get caught and so he's on the sideline second at 19 now and blaine benson into the game the redshirt freshman that completes to jared stearns see i told you it was quarterback friendly and played back in third and long that was the seventh catch for stearns [Music] see if tessa's tech takes a different approach here with their front and per ian's report to begin the half if everything's on the table from here this could very well be four down territory no question especially if you get half of it back steps up hit as he throws it incomplete for harrell and now fourth and 14. and what does vic shealy do here well we've talked all evening about their kicker and his powerful leg routinely making a 57-yarder 58-yard made a 62-yarder according to ian in pre-game warm-up and they're going to decide to punt it this is twice they've chosen not to do that i need to just pay in field position right here and i don't blame them at least make texas tech go the length of the field [Music] patterson to punt fair catch called for and made by mcpherson inside the five a long way to go for the red raider offense when we come back this tech backed up inside its own five five-yard line alan bowman coming out for his first drive of this second half 190 yards a touchdown a pick 15 of 21 in the first 30 minutes back up and take a shot here alan bowman and another penalty marker laundry day in lubbock fall start offense number 70. be half the distance to the goal still first down this has been the most troubling set of penalties for both teams because you should be past this by now i get it in the first quarter you got the first game jitters you're kind of working the rust off but this has been a a habitual thing for both teams throughout the course of the game these false starts sir roderick thompson got a yard second and long and down to end we're seeing all these penalties as you mentioned a laundry list this is something we've seen so far in college football and i've talked to texas tech head coach matt wells about a rust factor and a lack of reps as bowman goes to the right side there incomplete uh he said look it's going we have to avoid being frustrated as a staff because we haven't had the same amount of reps we didn't have the same reps in spring ball and in camp that we're normally used to so you're gonna see some sloppy play we saw it earlier today we saw it against byu navy we're seeing it right now here at texas tech and in houston baptist guys this is a huge third down early in this third quarter did you ever imagine we'd be in the third quarter and texas tech would be inside their own five with a third and 11. and and listen to to ian's point yes these have been challenging times for these teams in their preparation but at least it's not exclusive to this team or that team it's affected everybody the same [Applause] and a whistle and a flag [Applause] prior to the snap delay a game on the offense half the distance to the goal that remains third down it continues really the only constants in this season are the unknowns and when we talked to matt wells he said we have a better team we've recruited better we've gotten older but because of how the off-season unfolded he is still wondering if we will actually get to see a better team right there's no question he's confident in the group they have he knows this is a better version of texas tech football just wishes he had a full slate to show it pressure coming vasher makes the catch and is tackled well shy of the marker so you know we wondered okay houston baptist punting from plus territory that shows confidence in your defense which thanks to a couple of texas tech penalties comes up with a three and out again another three and out and again you know we talked about that with texas tech head coach matt wells you know how do you how do you win on defense in the big 12. great turnovers three and outs and tackles for loss well right now that's been the houston baptist recipe and that's why they're gonna get the ball back with great field position mcnamara to punt and stearns the fair catch inside the red raider 45 as bailly zappy gets back to work a terrific field position and really this is what i've been so impressed with is his ability to make accurate throws not only downfield but to all three levels but this right here using his feet keeping his eyes downfield buying a second passing chance he's been very very accurate texas tech has chosen on most occasions to rush three drop eight and he has picked the zone defense apart now remember houston baptist 0 for two today in red zone opportunities not even field goals they've come up empty right that's the difference in the ball game ian beak broke one tackle using the stiff arm and he can't get away adrian fry slowed him up his teammates finished him off frye number seven in black moving back to quarterback this year where he was an all-american and an all-conference selection two years ago because of depth they had to move him to safety last year positionless player right that's touched pressure flea flicker zappy steps up down field flag down incomplete for beak [Music] oh holding offense number 71 10 yard penalty replay second down see the issue that you have with a with a little razzle dazzle is that's a long developing play and you're asking an awful lot out of your offensive front versus a defensive front that is active and can overwhelm you i know they haven't been bringing forward five-man pressures virtually three-man pressures but that's a long developing play now they were confident in this o-line but again you're facing a big 12 defense and yes big 12 defenses may not hold up in conference play they usually do against fcs opponents zappy finds jared stearns now he is old reliable eight catches now and he picks up a big first down yeah bailey's happy on time in rhythm and now look it again quick look at texas tech's not even lined up they've got that bunch formation up top which worked on a touchdown yeah rather that stack formation up top which resulted in a touchdown earlier give us the big has a little bit of an opening that might have been the biggest opening he's had all game they've got texas tech frustrated right now you convert and then you get to the line immediately and you see all the black jerseys trying to move all over the field to get lined up and they're not lined up looking for stearns incomplete adam beck on the coverage third down if you're a texas tech player upstairs you probably thought this game was far over midway through the third quarter absolutely look we just showed total yards are you kidding me and listen total yards can be one of the most deceiving statistics in football but those total yards are reflecting why this game is being played the way it is right now why houston baptist is still in it and driving empty shed third and four play clock at five pressure coming zappy off his back foot looking for beacon [Applause] [Music] and completely the linebacker brandon boyer randall and we told you how they cross trained their linebackers and safeties that's exactly right and a really nice job by boyer randall timing this up late but bailey zappy let this ball hang up in the air just a little bit too long and in an effort to try and slow down gino garcia to make this a one score [Applause] game that had plenty of distance and it squeaks inside the upright it's a game in lubbock who would have thought you're watching big 12 now on espn plus and a one score game between houston baptist which is only playing a three-game schedule and is just in its eighth season of existence as a football program against texas tech in lubbock limited capacity due to covet restrictions so for the red raiders where do you find that juice if it's not from the crowd your upperclassmen on the sideline that are your vocal leaders you got to create some momentum through some energy on your sideline any shroff tom lugenbill here in our charlotte studios and ian fitzsimmons down on the field in lubbock texas not a lot of folks around the country probably heard of houston baptist or even knew they had a football team tell you what they put together another quarter and a half here that may be a familiar name sunday morning ian guys you're talking about motivation you know after that last texas tech offensive possession one offensive lineman came over slammed his helmet into the turf and alan bowman the quarterback came over and saw it and said guys we're good everybody just relax take a deep breath next drive next play just focus on the next rep next snap we're all good and one over two is wide receivers and running backs reiterated the exact same message and luke's uh curious you played the position how far does that go when it comes to that message from a quarterback well somebody's got to say it and if he's not saying it you've got problems so i like the confidence and now it's up to those players to listen to me man you get the first uh shot to to get a completed pass now you're in second and one all right you've got a little rhythm you've got a little momentum but alan bowman let's see if the players respond to those words because if they do that tells you what they think of it handoff thompson after the completion of the tight end koontz it's a first down keep in mind too and it's hard to do it's easy to say and it's hard to do worry about the next play because it's the only thing you can control now little allegro thompson started stopped and then stopped in his tracks [Music] when we talked to alan bowman this week he was telling us during the pandemic he would face time regularly with his teammates help them stay on routine offer words of encouragement bowman with a strike to ezukama who's been quiet since the opening drive and this is what alan bowman wanted to do he wanted to be able to be more on platform and balance in the pockets standing there and deliver the throw which he did right there really accurate accurate throw in a throw that they needed injury timeout that is segun iguera remember he was helped off the field earlier in this game as well uh alan balman was honest with us he said coming into this game his team and himself mentally yes they were ready a lot of zoom calls yeah you and i have been through a lot of zoomed out in the last few weeks but not a ton of live reps sure and listen we saw the impact negatively that had on navy last week on labor day and their blowout loss to byu and navy head coach kendia montelolo who that man right there matt wells worked for and worked with he came out the next day and said i screwed this up i took the wrong approach we were tackling bags we were tackling donuts and we didn't go live and it and it hurt us and so i think that matt wells and texas tech they've tried to come up with a happy medium there but you still don't know what the right recipe is until you get out and it becomes live for the first time no blueprint for navigating a pandemic and matt wells shared some of his frustration with that during our call with him this week thompson is tackled for a loss there's caleb johnson again in the backfield one of the top tacklers in the south wind a year ago the tables have turned a little bit aneesh in the first quarter and a half texas tech ran the football it will when they handed it off it was plus four plus five plus six now they've had some tackles for loss you can hear from matt wells after the game post game press conference on big 12 now bowman had to throw that away and that injury stoppage really seemed to halt the momentum of this texas tech drive it has and on two consecutive series we have found texas tech's offense in third and long situations didn't convert backed up onto their own five yard line let's see what they take on here [Music] on third down bowman deep down field and he overshot carter and it's fourth down and houston baptist comes up with another stop he's just off and it's the second time we've seen him do that on the deep ball not enough air and not enough lead across the field in order to give him a chance to run underneath it that keyshawn carter he's got two yards at least two and a half steps and alan bowman knows it a little more air lead him across to the middle of the field and you've got six you brought the point up early quarterback has to change speeds on his throws austin mcnamara to punt and it bounces into the end zone houston baptist has the ball down just one score with 6 39 to go that is for real southland conference postponed all fall sports with the intent to explore the possibility of playing in the spring houston baptist kept its non-conference commitments in football women's soccer and volleyball their football schedule consists of three games they're all payday games they get paid four hundred thousand dollars for coming to lubbock that louisiana tech game maybe it could be up in the air because latex canceled or rather postponed this weekend's game with baylor due to covid but it's a three-game season ian b running the wrong way a lot of flags down yeah we're going to have a block in the back which is really going to put this houston baptist offense in a hole to start off this series illegal block in the back offense number 71 a penalty is decline brings up second down william brewer the right tackle to finish the point those three payday games you saw from houston baptist critical to the finances and the coffers of that athletic department absolutely because it's not just football it trickles down to all of your other sports and and it's a big dent and that's why it's so important to get these games in for some of these programs low snap sterns is open and on first and 15 houston baptist converts again bailly zappy now north of 300 yards passing this is a really really nicely thrown football raid over a pursuing defender and listen that's been the difference between bailey zappy and alan bowman alan bowman's missed that guy twice although it's been over the middle of the field and zappy's been on point to this point so far 324 yards and what 59 60 plays now for this offense wow big to midfield another penalty marker holding offense number 55 10-yard penalty replay first down that's the center christian hood i mentioned 60 plays that would have been the 60th play that had been run a week ago houston baptist against north texas 97 plays in every offensive lineman that started the game played every single one of those plays so texas tech on defense knew what they were getting into they knew they were probably going to be on the field a lot if they didn't force three and outs what they've struggled to do tonight three-man rush zappy flushed down field josh sterns inside the 20. speeding for six [Applause] and houston baptist a two-point conversion from tying this game once again as we see the huskies celebrating off of what is another sneaky navigation of the pocket from quarterback bailey zappy he has just found ways to extend plays keep his eyes downfield and find the open target [Applause] they will attempt the point after so they won't go for two the p-a-t is good and folks our graphics people didn't get that wrong it's 21-20 this is happening this is happening and it's happening because of the savvy and the mobility of quarterback bayley zappi now he's made a variety of throws but that subtle move to the left where texas tech has chosen to rush to the inside has been a hallmark of his tonight he seems to find a way to just suddenly move away from pressure but keep his eyes downfield and make accurate throws and texas tech being in zone defense what have they done they've caught themselves peeking at the quarterback next thing you know stearns gets behind the coverage and you've got yourself a touchdown and we've got ourselves a ball game the two stearns brothers have been big in the receiving game 12 catches combined more than 220 yards together that touchdown they're two of six brothers five who have played college football and of course the big name of that group kaiden who's a db at texas they had another brother who played defensive back at oklahoma state dad was a basketball player at baylor athletic family very athletic family how come how come there's no like tuba players or drummers or we got a bunch of bunch of dudes on the field ballers yeah ballers 21 20 5 40 to go in the third quarter and the red raiders will take it out at the 25. those are the receiving leaders jareth the elder brother josh the younger a freshman and dj dormius had a long touchdown as well listen the reality of this game is if you're on the houston baptist sideline you're thinking we should be winning this game there's there's no question because the reason you're not is simply the red zone errors you haven't capitalized with points particularly touchdowns when you've gotten the red zone but what you've done is you've compensated with explosive plays that have resulted in points bowman is hit incomplete foreign second and ten flewelen helping as ukama up good samaritan i think the biggest surprise too as this game has progressed is how well houston baptist has played defensively across the 30 first down they have not given up the big explosive play the way texas tech has and that's been the difference and the reason why houston baptist is still in this ball game is they're making texas tech earn every yard sir roderick thompson to about the 42-yard line a gain of four sir thompson in the early going of this football game and he took the ball and he didn't dance he got downhill fit through a crease and they were gashing houston baptist now he's dancing a little bit because those holes have closed up here in the second half now thompson last year turned into the number one back with injuries to armand shine and taejon henry no doubt about it rb1 to begin the season rigdon former walk-on hash midfield and another first down and this is how texas tech can get a thin houston baptist defense tired wear them out get them running sideline to sideline force them to make tackles in space kind of like this shift tournament extension of the run game bowman moves the pocket pumps and out of bounds we saw this on the last drive texas tank had rhythm had momentum then there was an injury then they hit pause and then they punted and now instead of having an injury you got a penalty you hit pause what are they going to do this time holding offense number 73 10 yard penalty replay first down dawson deaton a reliable sensor one of the best centers in the big 12. offensive line a question mark entering the season transfers plugging holes at right tackle into left tackle jack anderson though did return at right guard he's one of the best in the league low throw it's rigden who hangs on interesting to see if alan bowman takes another shot down field hasn't been able to connect but he's had open players once they get past the 50-yard line wouldn't be surprised to see them take another shot there's jalen polk the freshman and it brings up third down near the 40-yard line of the huskies smart play call into the boundary there because you had to get at least half of that back to have a manageable third down opportunity which they now have four catches for polk taj brooks the freshman in it running back brooks and he's got a first down and he's brought a little bit of thunder as a change of pace back and i feel like we haven't seen taj books since really the end of the second quarter where he was carrying most of the run game load in the second quarter whether it should um shirajik thompson in the first quarter see if they can get him hot again bowman with time there's the shot he wants basher vasher holds onto it was he in bounds he is ruled out of bounds no catch [Music] this is on quarterback and wide receiver you've got it you've got to give your quarterback at least four yards from the sideline to have a chance to drop that ball in over the shoulder he got ran to the sideline that didn't leave alan bowman much place to put that football [Applause] bowman completes [Applause] a first down catch [Music] trey cleveland brooks now inside the nine seconded goal that's kind of the mo the difference between texas tech and houston baptist when they get a first down and they go tempo tech has been prone to run the football on that down that's nancy bowman allen's mom allen says if you show her have a counter because usually she can't watch she doesn't look very comfortable he says oftentimes when the play is happening she'll look down and you see the eyes going down the eyes are closed and she'll catch the play off the jumbotron rodrik thompson powers in you can lift this moment you can look miss bowman [Applause] i tell you what though for a large part of this game i don't blame nancy bowman for looking away oh it's got to be exhausting for her up in the stands this isn't how this game was supposed to be played out p-a-t is good still a one-score game 28-20 nancy bowman couldn't watch live you could you get to watch it again here well she heard the cheer of the crowd and the band play figured i'll open my eyes see sir roger thompson across the goal line and finally texas tech back in the positive column sustained to drive had some positive things happen worked some balance back into the offense with the run game four for four in the red zone now for the red raiders and that's the difference in the game and you know you say hey why doesn't nancy bowman watch the field watch your son there's a history to that and remember alan bowman's injury history as a freshman he suffered a collapsed lung twice twice a rare injury it occurred two times and last year game three against arizona broken left collarbone he could have come back late in the season but he and the coaches made the decision to redshirt you know and again when we asked him about injuries you know it's really easy to assume gosh this guy is he's injury prone is he going to be injured all the time and he explained to us he said until he got to lubbock he'd never been injured not as a freshman not as a sophomore not as junior and certainly not as a senior in high school so it's been as frustrating for him as it has been for anybody and he's a tough kid when he had a collapsed lung after a game against west virginia he came back and only missed one game for 400 yards against kansas last year in the arizona game had a broken collarbone it wasn't diagnosed as broken he re-entered the game well if you don't have a diagnosis just got on back out wasn't diagnosed until the following day a little diagnosis of the big 12 that was not positive for iowa state and k-state but oklahoma and texas both taking care of business i'll be honest i'm not really surprised by coastal carolina kansas hey the shot to clear jayhawks last year i know they did they seem to have their number kansas got to get them off the schedule kansas is a young team although they're running back puka williams oh yeah special player if you haven't seen him boy now special got to watch one he's not very big but he's shot out of a cannon now and he is explosive les miles in year two a lot of freshmen there there's jared stearns his tenth catch stearns has 21 catches now in less than two games gotta love the offense right i mean if you're recruiting the state of texas at the scs level and you've got zach kitly the offensive coordinator there and they've got this offense that is just putting up numbers and you are a skill player at that level great recruiting tool [Music] sappy off his back foot rats laugh covered well but it's going to be a penalty against mcpherson zach hitley with a homecoming a lubbock native dad is the track coach at texas tech won the national championship last year defense number eight 15 yards from the previous spot automatic first down so this is a smart heady senior quarterback this is one of the few times that texas tech decided to bring some more pressure get away from the three-man rush they see one-on-one on the outside immediately and he takes a shot i like the call recognizing what the defense is giving you you've got one-on-one that's your best target you get a penalty first down ian beak he's got to fight for those yards and to the 48. big slippery isn't he he looks like he's going to get tackled at the first point of contact next thing you know four yards down the field he's still running hutchins is the injured red raider hutchings last year as a freshman started the last 10 games and expected to be a significant contributor on that defensive line he's really disruptive on the nose plays directly over the center he's built like a refrigerator he's a load to handle there have been so many results from the last couple of weekends that don't make a lot of sense has anything made sense of 2020 no nothing has and i was going to ask you given that all these teams have had really uneven offseasons yeah and a lot of it's been virtual yeah how much stock do you put into what we're seeing tonight how much stock do you put into iowa state and k-state going down and some of these other results that don't seem to make much sense i feel like we've got to remind fans and viewers sometimes that this isn't exclusive to now this happens every year we see this in week one every year and most coaches will tell you you're gonna have your probably your greatest improvement better execution cleaner play in terms of penalties between week one and week two but nothing is normal about the start of this season so i think it could be expected to some degree zappy on the slant he's got rats left for a first down well they're in four down territory now i can guarantee you that fresh set of downs they look at this area of the field when they get into that plus 40 they are four down territory and feel like hey we've got it we've got a chance against any coverage they give us because we know we've got an extra down [Music] how about this we go to the fourth quarter in lubbock it's a one score game bailey zappi putting up monster numbers 405 yards two touchdowns sir roderick thompson a big score for the red raiders alan bowman's mom i know if you're a red raider fan it's tough to watch texas tech a 43-point favorite espn's football power index gave the red raiders a 99.3 percent chance houston baptist came into this game basically the equivalent of lloyd christmas trying to get a date with mary swanson and i'm telling you there's a chance they're down by one score to begin the fourth quarter win the ball and driving well they have confidence they've proven they can move the ball they've proven they can score they've proven they can create some explosive plays they've even shown someone to run game in this particular drive and there hasn't been an answer for quarterback bailey zappy who is approaching almost 900 yards passing in the first two weeks of the season a little pressure now zappy has to get rid of it and does third down 405 yards passing for the senior from victoria texas it was a smart heady play right there just getting rid of it live to play the next down you can't have third 12 there instead of third and six after keith patterson do you dial up pressure again doesn't look like it got another penalty another false start penalty offense number 14. five yard penalty third down that's harold and that is by my count the fourth or fifth penalty like that against a receiver hats left had two of them and harold's got two now guys got to get set they got look inside look at that ball you don't move you don't need to hear anything you're watching the ball so now third and 11. got to get half of this back [Applause] zappy to the air on the slant it's dropped by the freshman josh stearns if he catches that a first down listen he's caught everything else it's a shame to see that because he has caught everything thrown his way he's one of the smaller targets amongst their other receivers watch watch bailey's happy standing there and pressure throws an accurate ball you gotta have that catch especially after you've had a penalty and you put yourself in third and long he was still running right now fourth and 11. zappy will talk it over with his oc zach kidly and it appears they're going to take a delay of game so that tells you they're going to punt it away and try to play field position which has worked today it absolutely has worked they've been able to have a terrific punting game that's put the ball multiple times on the offense a penalty is declined fourth down within the five yard line and even on one occasion had texas tech field a fair catch inside the five yard line [Applause] [Music] blake patterson to punt it away he began his career at north texas and this one is down inside the 20. [Applause] texas tech strung together a scoring drive last time dalton rigdon had a few catches on that drive yeah the little quick screen off of the the action in the backfield that that's kind of the go-to on the last drive got houston baptists a little bit worn out on defense and they were able to get back to their run game as a result [Music] bowman over the middle keyshawn carter nearly broke free he's got track speed they won't take their foot off the gas carter again and he amtrak his defender devion hargrove second and one after a pickup of nine do you take a shot downfield high snap thompson there's a flag down i was just going to say you're going to have to call holding there on the right side of that offensive line holding offense number 56 10 yard second down a lot of jerseys coming away from uh shoulder pads look at the right side of the offensive line and really to be honest with you number 54. agera just stands up the offensive lineman and then he starts grabbing cloth jack anderson best offensive lineman on this football team one of the best in the country certainly the big 12. so second and one now turns into second and 11. quick release says ukama and now a big third down [Music] trying to get a free one there see if they can get houston back just to jump [Music] bowman over the middle and it is a catch it's a first down dalton rigdon again and bowman has looked his way quite a bit in this second half that might be the most important play that texas tech has had on offense tonight because if that goes to fourth down and they punt bow man over the middle dangerous throw nearly intercepted by flew ellen trey flewell and undercuts this throw and what a great effort on the pass breakup again alan bowman wants to do a better job of throwing on platform not off balance that time too much off the back foot lost a lot of steam on that ball [Music] there's keyshawn carter [Applause] he brings size and also a little bit of oof yeah he's got some juice you see him he's big and then when he gets the ball in his hands he can go he's done a nice job of tackling him he's done a nice job of tackling him towns into the alabama transfer lunges ahead for a first down one of the few carries that he's had tonight it does appear though texas tech has texas tech has three really solid backs got fresh legs right now in the fourth quarter bowman keyshawn carter making catch after catch he's got five receptions all in this second half [Music] injury timeout isaiah cash is down you never want to speculate but we have seen again these stoppages whatever you want to call it right listen and it's worked well it gets the offense out of rhythm right yeah and what we've seen tonight from texas tech is when they've gotten hot and they've dictated tempo they've been really really good when they've gotten off rhythm and the game has slowed down or they've had a stoppage between down the delay they seem to be off rhythm townsend burst of speed there at the end and it sets up second and two texas tech has cashed in on every red zone opportunity i snap bowman recovers and throws it away third and three [Music] smart play by the veteran signal caller there got to understand the moment where you're at on the field don't make any catastrophic mistakes with the football what what is mom nancy going through right now [Applause] bowman gets rid of it carter has a first down breaking tackles touchdown and mom is smiling well this time mom did not close her eyes she watched the play and a big smile as wide as the texas panhandle for nancy and alan bowman as the red raiders finally put a little separation between themselves and the huskies of houston baptist [Applause] nice reception here in the good run after catch to put the points on the board and when you're happy mama's happy everybody's happy red raiders pulling away mom nancy could watch alan bowman throw a touchdown pass moments ago and bowman's done some work 370 plus yards two tds today when we talked to him during the week he said make sure you have a camera on my mom so i'm sure nancy's getting texts and people are letting her know and we've been tipped off that even though she normally looks down and doesn't watch she might have been tipped off that we had a camera on her and so that is better altered her behavior now she's watching but nancy if you get the message this was not the idea of our production crew this was the idea of your son oh he threw you right under the bus what did he say he said i want a counter of all the time my mom [Music] the texas tech women's soccer team playing a conference-only schedule several matches will be featured exclusively on big 12 now including three straight weeks in october against west virginia tcu and iowa state to get big 12 now sign up at espn plus dot com slash big 12 now as good as alan bowman has been tonight first game back after missing the final nine with an injury bailly zappy has nailed his audition no questions [Music] still plenty of time and zappy lofts it downfield he's got josh stearns makes the catching stride sterns his gun his second the long touchdown and this houston baptist team refuses to die that's been the difference between bailey zappy and alan bowman tonight the deep ball has been accurate for zappy now listen look at up front when houston baptist all cut blocks every single one of the defensive front members at texas tech got chopped down like trees easy pitching catch nice touch over the top and they're right back in it some texas tech fans might be wondering how many sterns are on this huskies team two enough to keep them in the game josh and jareth and both have put up big numbers josh has been the big play guy four catches a buck 64. two tds a 75-yard touchdown catch a 65-yard touchdown catch jareth 10 catches for 115 yards look at the offensive line they got the cut blocks across the board might have an illegal chop block in there too but that's a state nobody saw it but it's the the poise you have the one-on-one down the field and what a terrific throw and catch and execution on the default down to ian fitzsimmons zach kently had his hand in the air with a number one before the ball left zappy's hand he knew that was six if it was going to be an accurate ball he knew it was a touchdown and he showed zero emotion just put his head down the number one in the air and then a fist pump boys we got one score game and houston baptist isn't going away we got a ball game no and you kind of felt after that last touchdown drive from texas tech two score game is this when talent rises to the surface is this the regression to the mean or progression to the mean yeah what does houston baptist do kick off first play boom touchdown answers listen they've got no quit they're not gonna leave anything uh on the field they're gonna they're gonna give it their all they've only got three opportunities to play this great game all right against three fbs opponents and they're giving it everything they've got tonight and they've looked good [Music] we told you about zappy perhaps having an audition as a senior for nfl scouts but with the ncaa's new eligibility rule he can come back for another season now maybe that's houston baptist don't say it don't you say it the hbu fans the hbu fans may not want to hear it but there are going to be teams in the group of five and maybe even power five trying to poach him away look what he's done in two games both against fbs competition he's been nothing short of spectacular that's townsend to the 30 for a gain of five one understand too his quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator zach kitley he's been on display too his resume has been bolstered tonight with the plan they came in obviously the quarterback play has made a huge difference but wow he has really done a nice job play calling and having these kids ready fifth catch for rigden it's a first down rigdon's been kind of the the go-to underneath get the ball in his hands type guy here in the second half for texas tech didn't hear much from him in the first half rigged in a former walk-on was actually a long jumper on the texas tech track team as a true freshman his coach there wes kittley who is the father of houston baptist offensive coordinator zach kidley t.j vasher so many options so many weapons we talked about the skill at texas tech a lot of returning experience vasher ball comes out but basher was already out to midfield there's a lot of talent and fallon bowman stays healthy again i don't know how much you make of this game you do have to win if your texas tag but talent wise it's better than a team pick to finish ninth in the league it is and as we said coming on our air tonight a four and eight team a year ago this isn't a four and eight roster but defensively they better come up with a plan for the big 12 because the plan versus houston baptist isn't cutting it tonight offense number 70. five yard penalty still first down that's the third penalty tonight on west and right sophomore mechanical engineering major who did start eight games last year [Applause] here we go again false start offense number 87 five yard penalty first down tight end to john holcomb i've never seen this many false starts in one game i don't know if i've ever seen this many combined false starts in two consecutive games let's get lined up guys [Applause] and zukama could not hold on second down you got to make that catch i mean you've got to get half of that back right there now all of a sudden you get a little confidence a few houston badges on defense they brought a fifth man in pressure right there maybe try to get after alan bowman a little bit now they've just got to keep the ball in front of them again they've done a great job of not giving up explosive plays on defense the main reason why texas tech doesn't have as many points as you thought they'd have tonight this defense has kept everything in front for the most part that's the hardest thing to do you want to keep it in front then you got to come up and tackle tackling on defense in today's game of football is darn near impossible a four-man twist by the huskies townsend he's seen the bulk of the action in the backfield and across midfield gets past the original line of scrimmage third and eighth bowman going quickly under pressure gets away bowman will run and let's see where they spot him i think he's got the first down he does well done alan bowman the previous play ruling of a first down on the field is under further review so the spot will be looked at is there indisputable video evidence to overturn the call we'll step aside big replay review on the other side the last spot under review so first you're looking at whether alan bowman slid because then the ball is spotted where he began a slide but it appears that he's tripped up from behind so where's the ball where the knee goes down we do not have the reverse angle so there's nothing there that you see that would overturn the call and the call stood absolutely not good good call by the officials but i also like them taking a look at it it's a critical part of the game you got to make sure you're right first down and 10 now from the 40. the difference in this game when texas tech has been close they've capitalized there's townsend and he gives you a little change of pace from what you see with brooks and thompson yeah he's not the physical maybe power runner of the other two but he's got some juice in his own right and you see that noticeable second gear when he puts his foot and plants into the ground high school quarterback four-star recruit azuka hauls it in actually that's jalen polk the freshman from lufkin texas big little league town [Music] cleveland his first two career catches have come tonight redshirt freshman from arlington yeah you'd like to see that freshman learn to make that pivot and get outside when you go inside that's where all the bad guys live texas tech flawless in the red zone five of five and five tds that's really the only reason why they're winning this game and another first down townsend does it on the ground did you really think we'd see the starters and alan bowman in at this point in the game oh absolutely not i would have been surprised if we would have seen him start off the second half but listen there's a positive to this as well bowman checks down sir roderick thompson great tackle in space trey flew ellen who was a finalist for the jerry rice award last year that goes to the top freshman in the fcs well he's had an outstanding night tonight as well he's been involved in past breakups tackles for loss but the positive that can be gleaned from this is this is a great teaching moment and you get yourself valuable reps in the heat of the moment where you know the game's not put away you're having to make plays to win this game texas tech off next week and then big 12 play starts two saturdays from now against texas thompson pinballing off defenders and finally subdued by caleb johnson third down [Applause] do you stay with the ground game here absolutely right now houston baptist running out of gas unexpectedly so keep grinding away thompson churning and turned back fourth down a field goal of course makes it a two possession game yeah you've got to at least come away with three here [Applause] he's been banged up tonight a few times fourth down and one is this really a decision it it appears to be [Music] i think they're going to run the football and they're going to tell their offensive line hey listen you've gotten us down here with the run game now finish this thing off so we can go home and the downside is you don't get it houston baptist has the ball down one score right you kick a field goal texas tech they're first of the half it'll be 30 seconds length if you kick a field goal it's a two possession game correct and it's a chip shot that's right big decision coming up conference with matt wells after the game on big 12 now on espn plus it's fourth and one the offense is out on the field instead of kicking a field goal to make it a two score game so that may be a question if this play does not work yeah that might be a question there's gonna be a lot of questions for coach wells you know what that's what you buy into when you become a head coach and not everything is going to be rainbows and unicorns and nancy bowman who's been a lot of fun to watch tonight she's being shown by somebody that she's on tv she can't look texas tech pushing forward did they get it judging from the initial spot this could be short texas tax kicker trey wolf was perfect inside 40 last year remember the yellow line is not an accurate indicator necessarily of exactly where the yard to gain is they're going to measure remember a spot is a reviewable play yes we've already seen it once tonight in fact i'm surprised it's not more reviewed it's one that is usually not overturned very often correct houston baptist football see the problem with the replay official if you choose to review that are you going to find something did you find anything in that pile of black and white jerseys personally i think he clearly got the first down but that might be difficult to review upstairs and if houston baptist is smart they're going to snap this ball immediately so the huskies get it back down by one score 5 25 to go now they're backed up at their own three yard line but it's a one score game [Applause] empty look zappy on the slant and it's jared stearns his 11th catch and they are going bailly zappy closing in on 500 yards passing and the beneficiary of a bad spot right there out of trouble first down across the 15. oh keep that ball tight to your rib cage young man now what's going through the minds now of texas tech this is now a fourth quarter maybe a final possession game against a team that you were a 43 point favorite against zappy and broke it up by mcpherson but a flag is down that's gonna have to be a flag because you're gonna see macpherson number eight on the perimeter here he arm bars the left arm of the intended target impeding his ability to get both hands on the football it's a really well thrown ball actually tack on another 15 right here holding defense number eight will be 10 yards from the previous spot and an automatic first down [Applause] numbers that speak in the imperative he's thrown the ball 45 times which is actually below his average [Music] three-man rush zappy steps up hasn't opened josh stearns the freshman has made big play after big play tonight big play after big play because the quarterback's ability to navigate the pockets step up but not look to run step up with the with the wherewithal of what's going on downfield what a terrific throw but that doesn't happen if the quarterback's eyes come down and he just takes off and runs texas tech 23-1 all-time against the fcs this is houston baptist's eighth year of existence it's their first game against a power five and they're still in it zappy under pressure and throws it away toward his own sideline [Music] 534 yards passing for the senior from victoria texas been as advertised and prepared for this game as we watched them versus north texas i sent a text to you i said houston baptist quarterbacks a dude 572 yards now they put up 529 against north texas they made more errors against north texas than they did here tonight versus texas tech that's for sure the younger stearns in motion zappy lobs one downfield there's rats left makes the catch he's inside the five oh they ran the sluggo the slant and go and bailey zappy look at how fast they're getting to the line of scrimmage better lineup texas tech now they were not lined up they give it to big who's turned back at the five yard line and this has been the problem area for houston baptist it has been because they cannot effectively run the ball in short yardage situations and i don't like that call right there if you're gonna run to the line of scrimmage run it and throw a 50 50 shot at the back of the end zone but you cannot effectively run the football here it's four down territory second and goal ball now back at the six [Music] [Applause] zappy enzo touchdown jareth sterns and the huskies can tie it with a two-point conversion what a fantastic play call and execution of the call as well again multiple occasions texas tech defenders have peaked in the backfield they think the quarterback is coming up to run the football and you just leaked the intended target right behind there and jareth stearns [Applause] they beat south dakota on a two-point conversion last year that was the biggest win in program history for the tie zappy rolling out wants rats left too high [Applause] houston baptist still has all three timeouts they've managed their timeouts really really well they've gotten themselves back in huge touchdown to remain in this contest texas tech better come up with some answers to avoid a loss at home [Music] back in lubbock tech success 35 33 over houston baptist here's the two-point play now this is a one-man route the tight end here is going to arch and he's going to block we're going to roll the quarterback and we're going to try and get the ball to brett ratlaugh ratzlaff the best player they just don't execute it well he's high on the throw if he throws this low into the outside he gives his intended target a chance what i do like about houston baptist with that call there was no hesitation they got right to the line of scrimmage they knew the call that they wanted isolate their best player they just didn't execute it very well and hbu has all three timeouts texas tech ball to 25. there were moments in this game when it looked like it was about to go sideways and what's the great roger conline your glory in a team triumphant you fall in love with a team in defeat you fall in love with houston baptist because as big of an underdog they are they had an answer every time it looked they were on the verge of folding and generally that's exactly what happens when you know you're out man you're hanging around and the longer you hang around then you get that double digit discrepancy in the score and that's when you choose to kind of fold up your suitcase and get on the bus and they never once did that tonight that's a sign of a well-coached team with a lot of pride sir roderick thompson picks up five here we go here we go timeout houston houston baptist took a time out there do you like the timeout at that spot luke's they seem to have been concerned about a personnel mismatch potentially didn't like who they had on the field and you get concerned when the offense is in some type of a hurry up mode that if you try to substitute you're going to get caught with 12 men on the field you bring up a good point because when texas tech has been at its best they've had the foot on the gas absolutely now when you're playing the clock as well obviously houston baptist can mix things up with timeouts but do you still go fast if you're the red raiders yes because you can't play not to lose that's what you can't allow texas tech to do if you're head coach matt wells play your offense they run the football effectively go go go but i will give a lot of credit tonight to jeff mills and we haven't talked enough about the job he's done with his plan the defensive coordinator at houston baptist the whole goal was to not give up explosive plays and for the most part they did that tonight there's thompson and he just got back to the line of scrimmage a big third down coming up houston baptist calls their second time out of the half it'll be 30 seconds in length now when you're using these timeouts here if you're houston baptist on defense what they're saying is you know what texas tech hasn't stopped us all night we can manage the clock by the plays that we call and because our quarterback's a good decision maker so they're rolling the dice and saying we're going to give our offense as much time if we can get a stop here to let them do it and manage the clock on their own and through their play and a lot of times too fcs teams the kicking game is a bit of a struggle their kicker who was one for four last week has a strong leg yes he hit from 62 in pre-game warm-ups hit from 54 last year his range comfortably beyond 50. i listen the question isn't about the distance the the questions about the right and left kind of like a golf shot bowman to the air hasbasher and a big first down for texas tech it just kind of got the sense of it was going to be some form of an outside quick screen get the ball into the hands of your playmakers you only needed a couple of yards eight catches for vasher he's been targeted 12 times [Applause] and now alan bowman and company will bleed clock well they really needed houston baptist did to to get that stop on that play right there after choosing to use two timeouts but again that's how you roll the dice if you choose to manage the clock that way because you have confidence in your offense thompson to the outside and did he stay in bounds well it doesn't quite matter now 2 24 to go i don't know why texas tech seems to be in such a hurry to get to the line of scrimmage you got 20 seconds on the play clock winding down take every second of it there we go back off a little bit hurry up and wait [Applause] short gain by thompson hbu out of timeouts our time oklahoma state football a behind the scenes look at the cowboys premieres a new episode each thursday on big 12 now all season long the first five episodes must watch tv available on big 12 now on espn plus cowboys are one of these teams they arguably have the best running back and best wide receiver in the country certainly two that are on the short list quarterback with starting experience and experience defense and with what happened in the offseason with mike gundy and his players that's the big question mark and that's something that could potentially hold them back but talent wise they got a team that can win the big 12. well it's players over plays and if their locker rooms healthy they're going to be just fine regardless of anything that's happened within that program during the off season i truly truly believe that you see that last graphic we showed there closed as a 41 point underdog heading into tonight as houston baptist is just shown such heart and resiliency and you know what execution they've executed really well they're outmanned physically i think we know that but boy they have really showed up tonight a quarterback in zappy who threw for 566 yards thompson pushing the pile and a little bully ball at the end to put the ribbon and wrapping paper on this one first down texas tech the red raiders will survive in lubbock but if you're houston baptist you go home and think about it not only was this a fourth quarter game you were in many ways one play away if you got a stop on third down earlier on this drive you were one play away from getting the ball back on the road in lubbock with a chance to win and had they kicked the field goal at the end of the second quarter it'd be 36-35 fallacy of the predetermined outcome but you're right exactly right there were two empty red zone trips yep and that was a hotly debated topic for us in the first half as we were closing out the second quarter huh well matt wells told us he feels his team is much better than the one that won four games a year ago there's more talent given the unevenness of the off-season and a pandemic outbreak within the team a covet outbreak last month 20 players impacted they had to cancel scrimmages sure he was worried about their readiness he told us he hopes that we'll get to see a product out on the field that matches the talent level that he has in the locker room and eventually they will get there he's a program builder he is and he's a developer of talent and personnel they will get there and you know what the remaining teams on their schedule with the nine plus one schedule will get their attention their approach their focus and their attitude going against big 12 opponents will be a lot different than it was here tonight there is alan bowman's mom nancy she can watch she can take a deep sigh of relief as can red raider nation for now texas tech holds off houston baptist i don't think we expected this game to come down to the final drive but it did give a lot of credit to hbu yeah eighth year program first power five game they're only playing a three-game schedule boy they did empty the kitchen sink well and it's a shame too you know they had back to back one in ten seasons they hired zach kittley the offensive coordinator all of a sudden um that man right there uh bailey zappy starts coming into his own underneath under that offense over the last year and now two games and it's a shame they're not getting a full slate of games because this team might have been a force to contend with in the southland conference at the fcs level and that man right there zach kidley the offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach sorry vick shealy the head coach you might not be here you might not be holding on to him for very long yeah there were a lot of people probably watching this game who said i might want to get that guy he's a cliff kingsbury protege allen bowman recruited by the kingsbury staff to lubbock 400 plus yards today bowman has started 12 games in his career he's thrown for 400 or more yards four times now yeah and now he's seven and three and again i keep going back to that number because we can throw for all the yards that we want to but the wins are how you build a program and just look at these numbers bailey's happy we've talked about him throughout the evening at times it didn't look like alan bowman was having that type of a night and keep in mind he missed two no three big deep balls to wide open receivers so a lot of the plays in the yardage coming from alan bowman were because those experienced targets that he has back this year made a lot of plays after the catch and i think you have to give him a little bit of leeway too he missed the last nine games of last year so it's been a while since he's taken the field didn't have as many live reps in the offseason as you normally get either brushing the rust off a little bit and you know what the most important thing about tonight for alan bowman he finished the game staying healthy and that's got to make him internally mentally psychologically that's important for him that's what we said at the top of the broadcast in the big 12 if you have a quarterback you have a chance and for texas tech they know they have a quarterback and if alan bowman stays healthy we may look at this game as an outlier when the season comes to its conclusion down to ian fitzsimmons thanks anish coach describe what you saw tonight well it was a good effort right at the end i'm glad the o-line be able to finish it off for us obviously uh we need to tighten up the secondary didn't play well there tonight they got a good quarterback they got good white outs we knew it coming in not enough pressure and not enough coverage in the back end to be honest with you and it was close they're good they did a nice job on offense elaborate a little bit more on what you saw from houston baptist especially the quarterback and bailey zappi yeah zappy's he's a good player he's got savvy he can buy himself time he's very very accurate as far as your squad going forward now now you're going into conference play the number one thing that you guys have to get corrected going into big 12 play probably tighten it up on the back end just to be honest with you right out of the gate good to see you thanks fitz denise matt wells two-time coach of the year in the mountain west second season as the head coach at texas tech season two episode one we thought we would just ease into the season no we got a pilot with a lot of plot twists it was a beauty tonight and you know what that's what makes the game so great is you never know what you're going to get it doesn't matter who the favorite is our final score texas tech 35 houston baptist 33 in just a few minutes the texas tech post game news conference will stream live on big 12 now here on espn plus
