the grand view vikings representing des moines iowa a perfect 14-0 and pumped up as the underdog coming in here to the naia national championship on the other side the high-powered morningside mustangs a perfect 13-0 and led by legendary head coach steve ryan it's morningside and it's grand view coming up next [Music] welcome everybody to durham county memorial stadium it is a championship saturday night the grand view vikings the morningside mustangs for an naia national championship we're absolutely thrilled you can join us drew felios alongside the former florida state national champion forest connelly and forest it is a championship night here in durham it is definitely a championship night but i tell you what drew don't tell grand view and their head coach joe woodley that they are underdogs they come into this game undefeated and he says they are coming to get that championship and take it back with them to iowa this is a high-powered morningside mustangs offense we're going to see tonight they've got the naia player of the year and what a group of receivers led by the big man reed jurgensmeyer look at all four of these receivers 240 receptions 3945 yards 35 touchdowns those are video game numbers what do you do how do you slow these guys down that's gonna be the big key does this grand view defense have enough to slow down morningside it was able to get them here to this championship game well they're very opportunistic 29 sacks so they get after the quarterback and then 22 interceptions 15 formal recoveries they will have to have one of those big nights to slow down this morning side offense because if they don't they're going to see balls flying all over the field and touchdowns being called an all iowa matchup here for an naia [Music] it's a grind to get through any typical fall football season but for this year in 2021 it's been nothing but football for both grandview and morningside because of covid the altered 2021 schedule held both spring and fall ball which put fatigue and players being at the top of both coaches heads now coach woodley for grand view says this is his ball club's 18th straight game he said he's starting to relate to those nfl coaches with those late december matchups trying to keep players healthy for morningside and coach ryan he told his players to have a full month off of rest during the summer he said they needed a break from the physicality of football but they also needed a break from just being coached by coach ryan day in and day out both coaches all season long have done a phenomenal job of giving players rest when needed making sure that his that their ball clubs are 100 for tonight's title game drew all right kristen thank you so much very long 2021 on the gridiron comes to an end tonight for both of these schools head coach steve ryan a resume unlike any other in naia football two decades of excellence 10 times a g pack of the year and back-to-back champs 2018 2019 his mustangs will kick it off here to start 66 degrees had some showers in the pregame see if that holds up as we are underway 2021 naia national football championship it'll be taken for a touch back here to start so we'll see grandview's offense on the field and a quarterback in johnny sullivan with something to prove tonight got the naia player of the year at quarterback on the other side fo but sullivan 13 is not to be overlooked well johnny sullivan has to have a big ball game he is the leader of this offense and it starts with the first play of the ball game you've got to set the tone and show this morningside ball club that you're here to win this championship sullivan tonight will take what the defense gives him and he goes play action on first down throwing it sideline near side and a caught football at the 40. well done and that's his big target gerald summer who has been a big play guy to get here to the championship and a good job by summer to get his feet down get the reception squeeze the football too often you see guys trying to make it look more dynamic than it has to be i like the fact that he was able to get that reception get his feet down and give his team the first down interesting to see how much grand view will run the football here tonight in their last game that semifinal big win over lindsey wilson did not have many opportunities on the ground first and 10 from the 40 and in motion was spry back to throw sullivan another rifle 20 yards on the reception and a first down at the 40. what's interesting right now what you see early from this grand view ball club is a lot of play action usually the play action does not work until you establish a running game so it's interesting that this play-action pass game has worked early on these first two plays that was anthony turner two-time all-american but did not get that honor this year missed a lot of action was injured and came back he's had a big impact so a couple first downs here good start for the vikings we'll toss this one out let bennett spry do his thing and loses the football incomplete remember that ball a little bit wet to here tonight and spry tried to make a play before he had possession of the football often you see receivers on the outside they know they have some room to dance and move and try and make a play in the open field but you've got to squeeze that football especially a wet football like you said drew that ball is a little bit heavy as well so you've got to make sure you've got possession of the ball before you try and make a play sullivan leading this offense they score 37 points per game kill five wide receivers here empty backfield and sullivan works out a shotgun so the senior looks throws another one caught this will pick up eight couple yards shy of a first down spry able to hang on to that and grand view's going with this fast paced offense they're lining up at the line of scrimmage they're not going super super fast but they're lining up and they're making the defense think they're keeping the defense from morningside on under heels one of the things about this morningside defense is you've got 278 tackles and 39 tackles for loss from the three starting linebackers but when you spread them out with that four and five five that we're seeing personnel wise it does not allow those guys to float downhill like they'd like to heavy package here on third and one sullivan gives second effort see where the ball is going to be marked got right to that spot had to get to the 30. could depend on the spot here and there you see the tackler as tyler winger came bearing down on him and lanael boyd had an opportunity to make a play in the backfield you've got to make that tackle you cannot allow for him to break that tackle and get the first down wrap him up hold on to him do whatever you can to allow pursuit to get there they will call the first down impressive drive here to start for grand view sullivan looking left little pump fake wants the end zone oh he's got his man touchdown vikings out of the gates it's anthony turner [Music] [Applause] and what else could grand view ask for the first drive every play positive yards nothing negative they just went right down the field on this morningside defense and number three jamal jones on the coverage the all-conference great plains player never turned around to locate the football [Applause] extra point is up and good so nathan hamilton kicks it through and at anthony turner with something to prove here tonight and watch number three jamal jones he never turns around he tries at the last minute but you've got to turn around and locate the football because when you locate the ball then you can make a play on it by the time he turned around the receiver had inside position and anthony turner did a good job of boxing him out and having that inside leverage where he had no way to play defense against him and he was able to squeeze the football and get the touchdown force this is an all-american receiver right here but again a little overlooked this season because he was injured the coveted year a lot of things not normal in 2020 and 2021. well it looked like a basketball player look at this anthony turner six foot four 221 pounds that is almost tight in size he's you know kind of tearing with being a tight end but he's fast he's got to the edge and what he did was he used his body so once again when jamal jones the defensive back finally turned around to try to make a play on the football what turner did was use his body to box him out like a basketball player and he had all of the inside leverage and there was no way for the defender to even try to knock the ball out they're going to be some match-up issues tonight for the mustangs and that's going to go both ways both of these offenses as good as it gets in naia football so hamilton to kick it off and this will be a touch back mustangs will have it on their first possession and they'll send on the naia player of the year quarterback joe dolan check and right now before we look at joe dolan check and this morningside offense you know it's interesting to see how they respond to what we just saw from grandview video game numbers well over 4 thousand yards through the air 42 touchdowns this offense scoring an incredible 56 points per game and here to finish it off in his senior season back to throw over the middle and this one short arm didn't complete took a bounce at the 40-yard line as he was looking for jurgensmeyer early on the defensive line the interior defensive lineman are getting pushed right in the middle of that offensive line and that is not what you want to see as a quarterback that is immediate pressure not allowing the quarterback to step into his throws some great quarterbacks mustangs have produced trent solsma the last and dolan check also jerkins meyer nothing but green grass ahead look at this man run as he's taken down inside the 30-yard line and the mustangs wake up and dolercheck saw his big-time big play receiver out there with man coverage they had zero coverage on the back end of the defense so david tolentino has to make this tackle you can't go flying up all willy-nilly you've got to break down and make the tackle because there's no one behind you there's zero safety coverage you cannot allow that to happen especially with the big time receiver jurgensmeyer and motion anthony sims dolan check steps up jerk inspire again we knew he'd be a handful i mean he has done damage here in this game in the past and force we have not seen a better receiver in all the years we've been doing this game at this level well he's a playmaker and he's been making plays since he's been on campus and it's just a culmination of who he is and who what he's become within this offense with these great quarterbacks remember before dolan check he had salzman so he's had great quarterbacks to deliver him to football fake it toss it out all dangerous paul nearly intercepted that time as zach norton was the intended target and if felix king has his eyes up he's running for six right now i mean all he has to do is pick his head up the ball was thrown right to him but he's trying to make the hit but you've got to look up and find that football one yard needed here on third down fat start on both sides grand view and morningside from durham [Applause] donald jack will hand this one off let his running back do his thing and it's anthony sims as he takes it inside the ten that'll move the chains will be first and goal what's interesting we talked so much about joe dolan checking about those four receivers all with 750 plus receiving yards but anthony sims comes into this ball game with almost 1500 yards rushing and 29 rushing touchdowns so they've got a triple threat here he is again he's got those quick feet and a little bit of power too touchdown mustangs and it's almost as if morningside said okay you look good doing what you do but we're going to come out here and show we can do it too we can do it a little bit faster and hopefully a little bit better [Music] could be a sign of things to come tonight i'm going to see some points here in durham [Music] so the kick is up and good chase carter puts it through both teams score and score quickly tied at seven just underway in durham [Music] the 2021 naia national championship is brought to you by baron rings big game usa box out sports bsn sports daktronics first down playbook and herff jones [Music] welcome back to durham now's that first start both teams go right down the field score touchdowns we're tied at seven drew felios forrest connolly kristen bedard with us down on the field a phenomenal crew also out here in durham the new site of the naia national championship we're in grambling louisiana last time out great to be here in the great state of north carolina absolutely what a start to this ball game it was interesting when we talked to both coaches you saw uh kind of this confidence you know in coach ryan because they've been here so many times and won so many of these championships but you also saw a coach in coach woodley that felt like they were coming in and they were going to change the narrative and they felt really good about what they brought to the table even against this high-powered offense yeah two great head coaches told you about coach ryan coach woodley in his third season as head coach as his quarterback johnny sullivan once again trots out he says he's a coach's dream as a signal caller he was recruited heavily by grandview out of high school went to northern iowa wasn't getting the playing time decided to come back to grand view i know what an addition he has been as the vikings trying to establish some ground game not much there hit hard in the hole it'll only pick up two and it's number nine tyler winger once again leading the way and the one thing that the defensive line does a really good job for a quarter side is covering up those offensive linemen when they do that they allow players like wenger to throw downhill and flow down and get in those seams and get to those ball carriers so they have to continue to do a good job of covering up those offensive linemen and allowing them to float downhill numbers on winger what he's done this year very active covers the field sideline to sideline as the mustangs crowd chance defense look out from behind ball is loose and there's the blitz coming into play [Applause] and on the outside you've got an offensive tackle and you've got a tight end they've got to do a better job of keeping their shoulders square to the line of scrimmage you saw the tight end try to come over and get the blitzing defensive back on the edge excuse me the blitzing outside linebacker but you've got to do a good job of keeping your shoulders square you can't go up there and give a short corner because this guy's already going up the film you get that short corner you give them an easy route and an easy path to the quarterback that was the loss of 10 yards so now the third and 20. tough situation here for the vikings early sullivan tosses it up up for grabs it's incomplete again well covered out there as number three with better position this time jamal jones and i think that sullivan did his receiver unjust on that play all you've got to do is throw the ball up you've got jamal jones at six foot one against a six foot four receiver throw the ball up and allow him to play basketball on the outside but a good job by jones locating the football that time turning around and enough time to see where the ball was coming and knock it down but when you get those opportunities drew you've got to take advantage of it you've got to throw it up and let him play basketball on the outside force them to double cover him on the outside which will open up seam routes in the middle of that defense caleb schweigert back to return this one he's got to drift back this is a great punt takes it at the 32. very shifty as this young man got it near midfield he'll be tackled right there a good return [Applause] and on that play if jamal jones holds his block he may still be running you see number three jones he's kind of mad at himself watching the end of this play you'll see number three jones if he maintains this block right there if he would have maintained that block he would have allowed the receiver to get across the field and get more north and south and possibly get to the end zone three wide outs now for morningside dull and check serve hand tosses it downfield incomplete nearly another interception as david tolentino was running free there jurgensmeyer again in the neighborhood well i thought dolan checked through that ball prematurely i think he needed to wait maybe one more second to allow his receiver to clear coverage and i think he would have been able to hit him down the seam on that route [Music] but once again when you've got pressure in the offensive line hadn't done a great job of keeping that pocket clean they've got to keep a clean pocket for dolan check run it on second down here getting through that line into the second level that's anthony sims again he's off to a good start and that is what makes this offense so deadly you have to worry about dolan until you have to worry about all four of those receivers and then you've got anthony sims coming through you know a 1400 almost 1500 yard rusher 29 touchdowns 124 yards per game you see his ability still not a hundred percent also coming back from an injury getting back to full speed good time to do it dull and check down the middle and another one overthrown looking for austin johnson that time so a couple throws a little bit high a little bit soon well what dolan check you see right now kobe roost one of his offensive guards the one thing that quarterbacks don't like to see is the front of their offensive lineman's jerseys because that means that offensive lineman has gotten beat and he's turned around to see where the defender is that just beat him so they've got to do a better job of protecting and giving dolan check the time that he needs feet is running back again who's got the hot hand right now anthony sims so maybe a guy that was a little overlooked coming into this title game again another player kind of like anthony turner on the other side didn't play a full year foe you don't account for him yeah but when you come into the ball game with 1492 rushing guards it's kind of difficult to be overlooked but you've got so many weapons i can understand why that statement has some validity oh he can run it down to the 15. morningside on the move well what he's showing you is all of the intangibles that you look for from a running back speed change of direction patience watch him on his plate the patience then he sees the hole and he gets north and south and gets going and the speed and the shiftiness all of the little intangibles that you look for from a running back he's shown you early in this ball game see if they continue to give him the football here now they go to the big back instead straight forward tough running call it about four yards as it's taken to the 11 yard line bring up second down and on the carry that time first carry for matt strecker here tonight strecker the senior running back out of columbus nebraska dolan check off the fake field is open taking it forward spinning all the way down to the three and as an office offensive line when your quarterback decides to run the football and he doesn't slide he continues to push towards trying to get a touchdown get the ball to the end zone it kind of gets you pumped up it gets your blood flowing and it makes you want to go out and hit somebody look at how efficient coach ryan's team is inside the red zone trying to finish this one with the payoff that is close no signal just yet well what the offensive lineman have to do when you're down on the goal line in red zone offense you've got to basically get in a four-point stance this is why you push the sled in practice you've got to uproot those defensive linemen you've got to basically bear crawl you want to get beneath them and push them as they're trying to come forward you want to try and uproot them sim says give it to me one more time touchdown morningside [Applause] that was all 27 on that drive and it's almost like morningside said okay hey we're going to come out we're going to put our player up to here dolan check out here let him throw for a touchdown then we're going to come out and we're going to make you change what you're doing coverage wise because we're going to run it down your throat with our big time back sims [Music] blow this one dead so think about this drew you come out the first drive and you pitch and catch the ball down the field like morningside did so you go to the sideline as a defense and you make your adjustments you know okay we're gonna change our coverage you know we're gonna make sure that we cover up jurgen's mind we're not gonna let him beat us up like he did on that first drive so you change your coverage and you get deeper on the field you keep guys on the perimeter and then they come with this rushing attack and this big time back you know running it down your throats so now what is the adjustment on this third possession when morningside gets the ball back that'll be interesting to see what type of defense they come out and play chase carter makes it a 14-7 game 6 52 left to go first quarter here in durham the 2021 naia football national championship is brought to you by hometown ticketing huddle masters transportation presto sports by really short's travel management and signature championship rings footage from 2013 when grandview last won a national championship here in naia 14-7 your score morningside right now with the lead about midway through the first quarter how about this vikings want to bring it out tough situation here do the best they can with it to the 16-yard line mustang special teams unit covering it very well the crowd is really into it right now as well 22. caden oceandorf got in there on the stock and right now grandview has to come back and they have to answer because you know that morningside is going to be able to put more points on the board you've got to answer you've got to stay in this ball game you cannot allow them to get the score up two or three scores ahead of you [Applause] [Music] vikings go to the run pick up about five yards they go right up the middle 22 yard line stop made right there so trying to get that running game going and it's it's number 26 on the carry ali scott you know some fans would say as much success as they had early with that first drive passing it down the field why don't they continue to do that but you have to realize that morningside has made adjustments on the sideline defensively so you take what the defense gives you fake it this time here comes the rush tough throw to make and it's incomplete anthony turner covered very well again will be third down and he had two receivers on that route he wanted to go to either anthony turner or gerald sama on the outside but a good job by the morningside defenders not to be fooled with the misdirection and covering those guys up [Music] mention force grand view did not feel like the underdog coming in very confident football team this is sullivan's so impressive on the first drive but now mustangs starting to get after him here just a bit [Applause] four wide receivers here for the vikings sullivan lots of time he'll rifle it open man 40-yard line and he hits him right between the numbers nicely done gerald sama the big play trackster on the catch and a great job by the offensive line to give him the time that he needed to deliver a strike down the field and a better job by sama to hold on and squeeze that football knowing that he's going to get hit from a defender coming from his backside osama had a heck of a game against lindsay wilson as grandview jumped out to a 14-0 lead in that game they quieted the crowd before taking it punching their ticket here to durham first and ten now sullivan starting to get back into that groove hit his man in motion but he got absolutely smacked as lanelle boyd junior came up made the hit and lanell boyd red sullivan sized the entire play a good job of making the tackle in the open field then it's spry trying to break free and i think that's going to be key throughout this evening can the defenders make tackles in the open field field a little bit slick here tonight but the rain is held up so great conditions at the moment here in durham second and eight sullivan firing again incomplete got just enough of it jamal jones on the coverage it's been a fun matchup to watch thus far with anthony turner but sullivan has to put the ball put air under the football you're not allowing anthony turner to be a big receiver watch the coverage he's got tight coverage but if you throw the ball up you've got an advantage with anthony turner and his three-year height advantage over jones right now you're throwing the ball where jones can make a defensive play on it you've got to put the ball up and allow turner to high point that football big third down here for the vikings and sullivan makes the adjustment still first quarter here in durham sullivan hit as he throws and over everybody's head that one falls incomplete another punning situation coming up here for grand view dom right walton was the intended target and a good job by morningside not to allow sullivan to sit back there and find somewhere to go with the football you saw cooper von segren come in with the delayed blitz and put a hit on sullivan caleb schweigert so exciting every time he touches the football offensively for morningside to have a feeling at some point he's going to break one tonight crush whis crushed it last time for grandview another good punt just gonna go all the way down to the 10 yard line we'll spot it at the nine [Music] morningside football when we come back to durham the naia side leads grand view 14-7 well during that last scoring drive for morning for morningside matt schrecker finally accomplished agreement he's been waiting three championship title games to do and that's to contribute when he joined this mustang ball club he joined as a film utility guy he was able to travel to the championship game in 2018 but could only look at the players on the field wanting to join them in 2019's title shot he got the opportunity to suit up but saw no playing time and just as forrest mentioned because of injuries to running to their running back sims schrecker's had an opportunity all season long to get in the game and with that three-yard run we saw in that last scoring drive it was a position he's waited his whole career to be in and he said it's something that he's been ready for and is so blessed to be able to help his team try to win a title drew all right kristen thank you second and two dollar check hits jurgensmeyer over the middle that'll move the chains for the mustangs he got a lot of that at the naia level forest opportunities come up and you never know who is going to step in or you always want ankle sprain away from the opportunity but the big question always is are you prepared when the opportunity presents itself to be the best that you can be touchdown lead for the mustangs austin johnson splitting near side dolan check looks his way fires the quick passing game working for the mustangs and they are mixing it up little run here quick passing game pitch and catch sometimes long over the middle great balance here in the first quarter what you love about these receivers they're not only catching the football but they continue to fight for yards you see on this play austin johnson he's trying to get yards he's continuing to push up the field he won't just step out of bounds after getting the first down [Music] so first down 35 yard line morningside has scored on both of their possessions thus far dolan check surveying things down the middle dangerous throw looking for a pass interference call but i don't think they're going to get it here as that was gianni angulo the junior defensive back breaking it up i think angelo did a really good job he got there right when the ball got there but once again you've got dolan check the best player in naia football this season with all the time in the world to pick and choose where he wants to go at the football grand view has to find a way to get some pressure on dolan check run this one vikings had it sniffed out there momentarily and able to make the tackle that's a big one david tolentino came up made the hit he'll be third down and tolentino did a good job because no one kept the edge on that play defensively and if sims is able to plant that foot and get north and south there were no defenders left just get a sense grandview needs a stop here fo i know it's early in this football game but they cannot afford morningside to go up two and three scores you don't want to get behind a high-powered offense like this morningside ball float [Applause] dull and check under a four-man rush here it comes he unloads it first down and more it's swiger taking it to the 48. and once again dolan check he has all the time in the world they came with the four-man pass rush they tried to do a tackle and twist to try and see if they could confuse the offensive lineman the lyman did a good job of staying square on the defenders allowing dolan check to hit the crossing route so fresh set of downs here for the mustangs clinic so far on offensive football for morningside oh there comes the rush and out of nowhere able to plant the quarterback that's calvin bright the senior defensive end 6-4 255 pounds what the heck and dolan check you can't just stay back there that long i mean you've had time but you've got to see that company's right in your face a good job and you know calvin bright just said look i'm tired all this you know i'm gonna go in here and i'm gonna let joe donald check know hey we're here we're gonna make some plays every now and then but that's on dolan check right there dull and check gonna try and get some of that back does just that get about seven on that return and you see morningside goes to the quick pass game after you get your quarterback hit you can't just sit back there but a good job once again by grand view defensively now you've got them behind the sticks it's third down you know they've got to throw the football is this where you bring the blitz package they've yet to blitz stolen check which is surprising to me i understand he can get the ball up and down the field with those receivers but you've got to get some pressure on him keep an eye on jurgensmeyer as he lines up in the slot on third and twelfth dolan check looking his way now fires and this is intercepted big play by the vikings as the defense responds and it's to mario luck at the junior who came up with it and lekken played that perfect he played through the football not the receiver he played as if he was the receiver on this play going to get the football too often you see guys trying to play through the receiver watch lucky on this play he plays the football right there he didn't care about the receiver he was looking as if he was the receiver on display a great job to angle his body get his shoulder in there where the receiver austin johnson couldn't fight through great job on the outside toss it out wide now [Applause] and see if that's the play that gets the vikings going seth jewell just a freshman playing wide receiver tonight for grand view he has stepped up his game here in 2021 and the defense did their job they made some big plays when it looked like morningstar was going to drive it back down the field and they get the big turnover and we talked about this defense and we talked about them creating turnovers and you see it early in this ball game there were some plays where you thought they could have gotten a turnover it could have gotten their interception could have created a fumble but you see on that play they were able to create that turnover something i think they'll have to do a couple of times in this ball game to win it a wild first quarter comes to an end here in durham morningside a 14-7 lead but a little momentum here for grand view naia football national championship great [Music] start of the second quarter aaron durham 14-7 morningside over grand view drew felio's force connolly kristen bedard 2013 grand view team yeah what a squad it was derek fulton who was the quarterback on that squad now the offensive coordinator for the vikings they come out running the football want to get that ground game going taking it to the 40-yard line and good enough for a first down so ali scott the sophomore running back trying to get it going ollie scott going to be key here tonight started playing about midway through the year very strong very shifty as well very much like anthony sims there's penetration by the defensive line on that play so that was a good job by scott to make that jump cut and get to the outside if he had one defender on the back end of that defense or he'd still be running so a good job by the morningside defender to get that tackle as well sullivan feeds him again ollie scott powering his way forward and force you were surprised when you saw the rushing numbers from a couple weeks ago that lindsey wilson game they were shut out on the ground it's almost like these running backs got to answer the challenge here tonight well we talked to coach joe woodley about that he said look when you look at the defense uh that they faced last week against lindsey wilson it was like running up against a brick wall and if you can't run the football don't try and run against something that you can't run against take what the defense gives you now what i expect moving forward from this grand view offense is to for them to go over the top because they've established a rushing attack now and if you look one inside is bringing more players down in the box to try and stop that run here it is little misdirection time set up well it from behind but inside the 30-yard line that's seth jewell again the freshman getting a champs he has stepped up here in 2021 and grand view is continuing to establish the run what they're also doing is they're eating up time on the clock what that does is that keeps that high powered offense and joe dolan check on the sideline so i like what i see right now with their offensive philosophy they're allowing those big hogs down on the line of scrimmage to get a push at the point of attack and they're trying to beat them up from the inside out good looking drive here for grand view to start the second quarter sullivan well his receiver fell down that time and now a late flag comes out oh there's the official force right there in front of the play where bennett spry hit the deck but interesting to see if this is indeed called a penalty and i thought the grand view should have kept an alignment with the back and the backfield ran with the play action because of their success running the football [Applause] it's indeed a late call maybe it is an interference but that is a very late call and if i'm on the morningside side of the field i'm a little bit disappointed in that call but once again if i'm grand view i'm lining up with the back in the backfield i'm going with the ball fake and i'm trying to go over the top to my big receiver anthony turner [Music] [Applause] so play blown dead here as they spot the football morningside crowd unhappy and maybe rightfully so here as sullivan gathers everybody here first down and 10 vikings what i want you to watch is on the bottom of your screen if that receiver in the slot goes in motion and the safety shades with him now you've got man coverage on the outside and i think that's an opportunity to go turn it go to turner down to the 20. it's a gain of three again it's ollie scott granview trying to slow this game down try and keep pace remember morningside's offense averages 56 per game grand view's much less than that only per game so this cannot turn into a shootout if you're the vikings and once again watch that slot at the bottom of your screen if he goes in motion sullivan pressure sideline nice catch and it will be ruled inbounds right at that marker i'll tell you what he's got some options 28 carson rolling jurors another and a good job by sullivan escape in the pocket allowing his receivers to come back to the football and that's what you want to see from your receivers when the quarterback breaks contained and he gets outside the pocket you've got to come back to him give him a target to throw the football to once again i've been calling for it if you get man coverage on the outside with your big receiver turner you've got to go up top and let them play basketball and high point the football first down now will ali scott get his number called he will look at that defense coming after him again it's tyler winger at the senior line background of holstein iowa 21's been key had that big tackle on the blitz jalen portis morningside offense gets a lot of publicity but the defense can also bring it as well [Applause] that lost one second down and 11. sullivan quickly toss it out nothing there and another big hit and i don't like that play you're throwing the ball to your tight end tuning but he's going east and west he has to catch the ball try and position his body then get north and south you need to get the ball to your playmakers as they're going north and south there's too much speed on this morningside defense to try and get east and west then get north and south remember they're coming to this ball game with 122 tackles false 45 sacks 11 force fumbles and 13 interceptions so they know how to get to the football and how to take the football away once they get there sullivan on third down needs 12. fires over the middle incomplete tried to squeeze it in there but lanelle boyd made it really difficult and i just don't understand you've got anthony turner on the outside and you've never you never tried to go to him once again sullivan trying to fit the ball in a tight pocket great play by boyd to get that hand in there at the last minute but once again when you've got a match-up advantage on the outside with anthony turner throw it up top let him try and get it if he doesn't you're very likely going to get an interference call 32-yard field goal here on the way [Applause] and this is no good so the morning side defense comes up big once again as nathan hamilton's kick goes wide left and from the morning side defensive perspective that was one of those bend but don't break defensive series and that's all you can ask for you know once again as great as they've played throughout the season this is an undefeated football team that they're playing in grand view this is a team that drove the ball down the field very easily that first drive and this is a ball club that feels like they can win this football game so they're going to have some success but as a defense you just bend bend brain but you don't break morningside with 11 straight g-pack championships this team enjoys playing together great chemistry for the mustangs dull and check fires it got his man again austin johnson johnson breaking loose so the ball comes out and grandview's gonna get a break how about that clay freimuth is on top of it and there's so much to decipher in this play first of all austin johnson great pass by dolan check and austin johnson just showed you prior to losing that football i'm a better athlete than you but defensively this is why you pursue the football and you punch because just where you think they're going to make a big play here you come granby with the big blade getting it back to your offense let's play some football grand view comes up with the football off a fumble and now the vikings get it back here in the second quarter drew felios forest conley kristen bedard [Music] a little bit of a dry spell here for johnny sullivan and the grand view offense trying to keep it on the ground against these mustangs but right now they are fearsome 96 on the tackle that time that was big zach keller the senior out of wilbur nebraska and i'm going to continue to call for it you've got man coverage on the bottom of your screen you've got a height advantage with anthony turner out there trying to be covered by jamal jones try to take advantage of it when you see the safety shade over if that [Music] slot receiver goes in motion watch the safety on the back end lanell boyd number four he kind of shades when that guy goes in motion which allows for the quarterback to go over the top if sullivan wants it sullivan tons of time this one's going to go way high though and it goes incomplete he's looking towards the sideline there gerald sama was out there and right now sullivan just needs to settle down a little bit he's got some open receivers his offensive line is giving him time to step into his throws we know what he's capable of he's just got to settle in a little bit when you're playing championship football and the emotions are going and the adrenaline is going that happens sometimes sullivan huge tom brady fan says he really looks up to the current tampa bay buccaneer good guy to look up too vikings need 10 on third down standing in open man out there and he hits him in stride so fresh set of downs here for grand view much needed first down and again 28 making some plays here in this first half carson rollinger and carson rollins is the third down receiver he's been the guy on third downs that sullivan is going to and you see right there he's able to get down the field on what looks like you know a wheel route from the wide receiver but he's one of those guys that they have to keep an eye on on third downs because he's been sullivan's best and favorite receiver on third down running ali scott not much there they went morningside very deceptively big on that interior foe that was tyler winger right there 220 pounds he looks like he's 250 inside well he comes downhill and the one thing that he continues to be able to do is flow because those defensive linemen are doing a good job of covering up those interior offensive lineman the two guards in the center they want to get up to the second level they want to cover up those linebackers and give the running backs lanes but when you've got good play by your defensive tackles forcing them to stay down there in the trenches and fight it allows for those linebackers to flow downhill fake it to scott sullivan wants a lot more open man cuts it inside all the way down to the one yard line bennett spry the senior first and goal grand view in business isaac bingo the linebacker got caught looking in the backfield you cannot get caught looking at the quarterback you've got to play the receivers and bennett spry is able to get down the sideline nobody went with him in a good job by sullivan not to get too excited because as a quarterback when you see your guy wide open sometimes like that you tend to put a little bit too much mustard on the football so a good job delivering the ball a long spry to get possession and get down the field and it's your running back ali scott will score for the vikings so grand view it's been a pumpy ride here in this first half but they've hung in there they get a break foe on the fumble and they convert it into a touchdown and that is why you never quit on a play when it looked like morningside was getting ready to run away with this thing the grand view defender made a big play forcing the fumble and now they've driven the ball right down the field with a couple of big plays and tied this football game nathan hamilton on the field to tie this one up so the vikings have pulled even 14 all from durham the naia national football [Music] championship welcome back to the naia national football championship 14 all morningside in grandview this is the big play johnny sullivan hits bennett spry in stride bennett spry force one of those guys his college eligibility would have been up in normal times but in covid you get that extra year he went to his head coach said coach woodley i want to come back for one more year i want to win a national championship here he is here tonight and that play is evident of why he came back he is a big play waiting to happen in a good job by sullivan to get him the football and allow him to be the playmaker that he has the ability to be caleb schweigert we'll take it inside the five swiger electric on special teams does not go down easy but he's going backwards this time and they're gonna get him inside the five so poor field position here to start for the morning side mustangs jackson harrison made the tackle for us i got a question for you let's flash back to the mid 90s you're at florida state your college eligibility is up but you have the option to stay one more year imagine kovid was during those times do you take that extra year and come back to win another national championship or do you go off into the sunset or go to the nfl like you did well i actually take that extra year uh you've got a next year of education that you can get uh you try and get the most out of the experience uh so why not take that extra year you continue to get better as a football player as well you chase championships so i would have taken that extra year so i understand why these young men you know opted in to take that opportunity to not only further their education and their academics but also continue to chase an elusive championship you know that's why you play the game you play the game and be a winner you play the game you get a championship you play the game for that ring and for that opportunity so i enjoy and like the fact that these young men are taking you know these opportunities so morningside backed up here second down and five dolan check fakes it tosses it out ball caught there's swiger making it happen i like this man's game pitches in any way he can he is dangerous every time he touches the football well he's not the biggest guy in the world at 5 10 170 pounds but it reminds you of wes welker he's a tough guy he's probably got one of those square chins and that's what i call those guys that just like to play football and enjoy the contact and everything that comes with it nice cutback it sims again got 13. move the chains once more and what's interesting on the field you're seeing wide receivers knock out defensive backs everybody's into this ball game right now you see sims he's running tough in the gut of that defense and for our defense that is demoralizing when a guy could just run up the middle and continue to get positive yards six minutes to go here in this first half dull and check surveying things starting to get comfortable intercepted gianni angulo comes up with another one and the vikings second turnover in a row [Music] and the receiver austin johnson did not even make an attempt to catch that football as a receiver even when the ball is not perfectly thrown you've got to make an attempt to guess the football because when you don't a defender will and you see on that play austin johnson watch number one there was no attempt you've got to make an attempt on the football you cannot be angry and mad because it's not a perfectly thrown ball watch him you gotta dive if he dives he gets in the way of angulo and maybe he does not make that interception [Applause] market at midfield grandview with a chance to take the lead and here they come ali scott call it six on first down the momentum in this game completely has changed and one of the things you're seeing with this grand view offense is they've had some success running the football and it may have been fool's goal when you look at what they did offensively last week not being able to run the ball and you've got a morningside defense that probably said okay you know what we're going to do we're going to make them one-dimensional again we're going to look at the defensive sets that lindsey wilson played and we're going to do the same thing and make them one-sided but it has not worked this evening grand view has effectively run the football second down they'll keep it on the ground ollie scott's starting to get into a groove picks up a couple more be third down and short if you're just joining us grand view came down took the opening drive scored a touchdown went up seven nothing then morningside with two straight touchdowns grandview has even the score and here they are trying to go back up on top and right now grand view is playing some grown man football they're lining up and they're saying hey we're gonna run it right at you we're gonna run we're gonna hit you in the mouth and we're gonna see can you stop us that blue collar mentality that represents vikings football at play right now third and two [Applause] sullivan lofts it receiver there makes the catch makes the turn stays on his feet and he'll be knocked out carson rollinger his third catch of the game they're starting to utilize 28. once again that third down receiver he's the favorite receiver on third down and what was great about this play is sullivan released the football before rollinger came out of his break so that is great timing and that's quarterback receiver recognition knowing where his receiver is going to be and putting the football there for him to grab it and squeeze it and get that first down every third down conversion so far has been rolling together they came into the game knowing was the top third down receiver for this ball club sullivan has gone to the bag here in this first half ollie scott now runs into a wall at the 10-yard line and that wall well it's by the name of tyler winger he's flung down right there but once again because they're running the ball effectively they're forcing morningside to bring more players down into the box but a good job on this play to get up to the ball carrier and get him out of bounds and there's that man again tyler winger he's been making plays all season long so you expect him to make plays tonight but once again you've got four and a half yards on that plate what more can you ask for on a first down run second down at six key drive here for grand view another play action throw it out there and it is oh nearly caught ball went right through the hands of satchel you know when that ball was thrown by sullivan you're thinking it has no chance and somehow force it just finds its mark well he's deceptively precise on his passing and you see his receiver had a chance to make a play on it but keizhawn green did a good job in the last minute of getting his hand up there and shielding the receiver but watch when the ball comes out of sullivan stands you think there's no way it's going to get there it's right where it needs to be and seth joel had an opportunity to make a play but you see john green get that hand up and kind of shield his eyes a little bit not allowing jewel to squeeze that football so it's third and six have a shotgun sullivan same spot touchdown bennett spry scores for the vikings and grand view has retaken the lead [Music] and sultan got the match up that he wanted you've got bennett spry on the outside trying to be covered by the middle linebacker tyler wenger and every time he sees that matchup he's very likely going to go to it [Applause] i think on any level when you've got a middle linebacker trying to cover a receiver like a spry one of those guys that plays in the slot one of those smaller very quick receivers you know the quarterback's going to see that matchup and he's going to go to it 21-14 what a football game we've got here in the naia national championship [Music] so bennett spry who told us coach in the off season coach i want to come back use that covet year to win a championship big play after big play here in the first half 21-14 grand view back on top true fellio's force connolly kristen bedard great time of year as we approach the holidays foe bowls galore on espn and of course this great event we've had the privilege to be a part of over the past six years for me many more for you and it just keeps getting better year after year absolutely nine years calling this football game and they get better each and every year and it's very competitive and you love to see these ball clubs you know continue to chase that dream as they look to get this national championship see incredible players at this level like joe dolan check also have kind of a backyard feel to it as well a lot of guys also force that started at major d1 schools that transfer into naia football well guys want the opportunity to play and they want the opportunity to showcase their skill sets and that is what has happened throughout all these championship games that we've been blessed to call so three minutes left to go in the first half dolan check we'll toss it to that far side good catch and run by austin johnson and if you're morningside right now fo what are you thinking you were sort of in control of this football game and then the turnover bug bit you if i'm on inside i'm thinking hey this is the championship football game and we've got to play four quarters we can't just feel like we're gonna win the football game because we had two very successful drives early in the first quarter dull and check again play action and jurgensmeyer big 81 makes the grab and once again when we talked to coach woodley and we asked him do you think you are the underdog he said look we're undefeated just like they are they put their shoes on just like we do we're coming out here to win a football game we're very confident that we can win this game first down let sims run anthony sims got those quick feed tell you what really impressed by him a running back like this you watch him run he's a senior out of fort lauderdale he's played against big time competition in the past i think maybe perhaps there's a pro tryout for him in the future absolutely once again he continues to possess and showcase those skill sets that you need from a running back patience the ability to block and protect the quarterback the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and the ability to shift and change directions and show that top end speed when it gets in the open field what do you think is the most important attribute because a lot of guys on this level foe have dreams of just getting a look somewhere what's that one thing the scouts are looking for well i think intelligence football intelligence football iq you know everybody has you know a speed or everybody has athletic ability but are you intelligent enough to make the right play at the right time and decipher what is going to happen foreshadowing is a big part of being a successful football player dolan check certainly has that as sims gets it again he'll be gang-tackled this time at the 44-yard line so keep an eye on the clock 155 and counting left in the first half and there does not seem to be a sense of urgency from the morningside offense which is surprising because the clock is continuing to tick and the clock is not their friend right now third down and medium got to get it to the 38 in motion is johnson here comes that rush four-man rush middle of the field it's dropped oh a big drop there zach norton the sophomore out of sioux falls ball goes in and out of his hands and i call that alligator arms you know zach norton had the football he should have caught that ball he could have body caught it but he was looking to get hit and he brought those arms down to see what was going on look at him looking around he shouldn't find out where the contact is coming you gotta give it up for your team on that play norton and squeeze that football fourth down mustangs want to go for it that established some momentum here before they head into the locker room saw the look of blitz from nate ewell and the vikings and little dissension right now for the mustangs offensively they call timeout the vikings crowd loving it [Music] well right now they've got morningside thinking and second guessing themselves uh and and once again you know you talk about that play by north if he squeezes that football game you're gonna take a big hit but you're in the championship football game right now and you've got to lay it all out on the line you know there's an offensive line when i come back to the hall of mine i see my guy do that you know i'm going to try and pep him up and talk to him positively i'm not going to beat a guy when he's down but i'm going to tell him also hey man you got to lay it on the line you know we're out here in the trenches and we're laying it down on the line i need you to do the same thing squeeze that football so now you know it's an offensive line i'm telling you you always want you know before this game is over you owe us a big play well we invite you to stick around at the half kristen bedard down on the field we'll have our annual meeting of school presidents love to meet the presidents of the naia schools grand view president kent henning in his final year for us he's going to retire after this year and he actually got his nba at duke so imagine coming back here to durham in duke country to play for a national championship really really cool moment absolutely you get your mba from duke you're pretty smart guys i would think i certainly don't have one of them it's absolutely not but i'll tell you what drew my mom has a graduate degree from duke there we go okay [Music] and now time out let's see i believe grandview calls this one they will 123 left to go in the first half and do you hear fans screaming go for it i think the morningside fans are kind of in shock right now because the way this thing looked early like they were going to run away with this ball game and then you know you saw grandview get back into it but then once again the defense set the tone for morningside and it looked like they were going to run away with it again but then the defender made the big play on that big long pass to get the ball back to the offense and it's been all grand view since so i got to ask you what do you do here if you're steve ryan do you punt the football away you try and take a shot with 123 here i think right now you've got fourth and a a a long four maybe five yards you've got playmakers all over the field uh with these receivers you've got anthony sims i think you go for it uh you've got a minute and 23 seconds left if your defense you know if you can't get the first down and your defense can't hold for a minute or 23 maybe you don't deserve to win a championship i mean i know that grand view has been able to drive the ball down the field but at the same time you've got to let your team know offensively and defensively we believe in you we were shocked to not see morningside at the national championship last year they were knocked out by northwestern had to play them two times this fall and beat them both times to get here to durham and they will go for it put the ball in the hands of the naia player of the year austin johnson bottom of your screen dolan check again plenty of time offensive line does their job it's tipped up and caught a break for the mustangs as caleb schweiger came up with it first down and you can't ask for anything better for your offensive lineman from a protection standpoint and you can't ask for anything better from your defensive lineman when they can't get to the quarterback you get your hands up to knock the ball down swagger just happened to be johnny on the spot and grab the football to get the first down now they'll hurry things up four wide receivers double check with new life again tipped so they're timing that ball perfectly right now for us on that defensive front but as an offensive lineman when you start to get tips what you're taught to do is take those two hands and get a two-hand punch in the midsection of the defender when they jump up catch them because they're exposing their whole body at that point you get that two-hand punch in that midsection they'll think twice about getting those hands up because they're going to feel you so you've got to make those guys feel you they know they're not getting you to the quarterback they know it's a quick pass game you got to make them feel you as an offensive lineman five whiteouts now for dolan check under a minute to go in the first half dolan check wide open to schweigert and he is down at the 22. [Applause] and that crossing route has been open all afternoon and dolan tech did a good job of getting the ball of swagger allowing him to get north and south as soon as he got possession since here morningside really wanting a score to take into the locker room [Applause] don't check hit again is jurgensmeyer well he took a shot that time from david tolentino hung on and i want to tell you something you asked me about playing at the next level that is a next level type play he high points the football squeezes it and takes to hit all hands on that catch he's able to hold on to the ball and take a hit a shot to the head i wonder if the officials may take a second look at that play because that seemed like it could be deemed as targeting but that is an nfl type play when you can squeeze the football hop on it squeeze it catch it with your hands know you're going to get hit get both feet down in bounds take the hit and hold on to the football double check tries to get everybody organized pump fakes looks left throws it corner of the end zone tied up down there and no flags oh wow well it looked like there was a fistful of jersey and maybe even a little bit more as it was fry moved the line back around the coverage but i think austin johnson initiated the contact and that's why the official did not throw the flag that was laid by dolan check to go over there but watch him he initiated the contact and then the defensive back reacted i think it's a good no call on that play he's actually lucky out there third and one dolan check looks like it was early movement that time instead sims will pick up the first down but they got to hurry up here clock will restart with 25 seconds they've got timeouts to use so you can't take them with you to the second half you got to use them so they will burn one of them mustangs will come talk things over here 25 and a half seconds left to go in the first half so what a 2021 it has been we touched on at the very top of the show we were actually in grambling louisiana back in may to crown a national champion to lindsay wilson here we are you gotta have some time in a year well think about it are we the only two people to ever call two national championships in a single calendar year i think so i think so just that kind of things are just wacky these days well it's great to see the fans be able to get out here and support these ball clubs and once again durham has been a great host city there's so much to do here with all of the universities everything that's going on whether it be north carolina duke nc state saint augustine's shaw university north carolina central there's so much to do and so much history and tradition in this whole research triangle area that loss by morningside to northwestern back in may ended a 39-game win streak that is the role that this mustangs program was on trying to reclaim a title here tonight dulincheck fires away touchdown austin johnson and now the extra point to tie [Applause] [Music] and austin johnson did what defensive lineman do to offensive lineman to number seven kyla plug he hit him with a dip and rip and was wide open and club is sitting there trying to find where he is great move great route by austin johnson on that play [Music] chase carter to make it 21-all grand view and morningside back and forth we go could not have asked for much more in this 2021 naia national football championship oh he was wide open we was wide open because he made a great move on the route he got to the defender and he hit him with the outside hand and swam over him and once he did that he had all the inside leverage that you know anybody could want and when he swam over him and he hit him with that outside hand what it did was it pushed the defender to the outside so as he's trying to recover austin is still going north and south up the field and going to the inside with that leverage and there's no one there to cover him sioux city iowa represented by morningside the mustangs back-to-back champs 2018-2019 mention that 39-game win streak that came to an end in may but you know again may football usually playing spring football during that time it all counted here they are back again let's take a look at the last four seasons what they have done they have been the best team in naia bar none what do you think about it you first you got the quarterback trent solzman you know with all the records that he broke and you got dolan check just sitting waiting to play and then you put him in and he becomes the best player in naia football and you add to that jurgensmeyer who seems like he's been there forever you know so i mean they've just got playmakers all over the field and coach ryan has continued to do a good job developing these players into championship caliber vikings now under 20 seconds left to go with spry on the return he'll take it up across the 20-yard line and grand view will come on the field for the last play or place here to take us to half time so entertaining first half both of these teams really putting on a show and i think the key is the way grand view was able to come back put it on their defense they forced those two turnovers foe and eventually they're back in this game so sullivan will take a knee and that will take us to the intermission [Applause] standing ovation for both teams as both faithfuls appreciate the effort an all iowa national championship game here tonight on espn morningside mustangs grandview vikings hope you're enjoying it from durham and should be an awesome second half as well morningside that high-powered offense grandview that stingy defense grand view is scheme they are ready for what morningside is bringing so far in this game mustangs though talking about individual players like dolan check and jurgensmeyer they're as good as it gets let's send it down on the field kristen bernard is with coach ryan hey coach you went for it on fourth down it paid off with the scoring drive what made you go for it uh you know they really haven't stopped us all day you know we made a decision we felt we had a play that could get it obviously you know fortune went our way the ball got tipped and swag came down with it was a good play so yeah i mean it went for us we just got to continue to make good decisions with the ball making those good decisions getting the momentum going heading into half it's been a back and forth ball game how do you separate in the second half we've got to create a couple turnovers and we cannot turn the ball over so we just got to hang on to the ball and just keep the offense going all right coach thank you so much thank you drew you heard it minimizing the mistakes all right kristen great stuff 21 all grandview and morningside halftime festivities coming up right after this on espn [Music] welcome back it is all square at 21 a piece here in the 2021 naia national championship game now joining me are two very special individuals i have both school presidents president reinders and president henny and typically we get an opportunity to have them brag about their school so i'm gonna let morningside go first talk to me about your school and your football program and what makes morningside full of tradition well it's just it's a really special place and one of the things i think that i share with kent we have such great student athletes at morningside they are young men in our football program and really all of our young men and women that are athletes across campus they care about their academics they care about the institution we're so proud that two iowa institutions are playing for the national championship in the nai this is just really special we get a lot of local kids if you look back up there in the crowd today there's an awful lot of parents and those are parents that care about their kids so education comes first to be sure and we love the opportunity to beat grandview today well you said it it's the first time in naia history that two schools from the same state have a chance to win national title so you know iowa's winning tonight the state is winning regardless now president hennings tell me a little bit more about grand view well we also are very proud to be here and it's great to match up against a great school like morningside another iowa institution i'm so proud of our guys they have fought hard this entire year coming off of that coveted year when all of us and all of our student athletes had to deal with so much adversity they just showed that you know we have hope and confidence in the future because what our students do and what they stand for and you're seeing it out here on the on the on the field tonight and we're so honored to be here there are a lot of people back in iowa wondering why we're coming to north carolina but i think this is a great atmosphere it's a great it's a great game two wonderful teams really talented teams great coaches knotted up at halftime we're going to have a great we're going to have a great second half and we're going to we're going to edge them out in the in the end you just watch it he says we're going to get fun no wait we turned it over three times in that half and and we're still 21-21 at the half so i i think we're sitting all right you know in in all fairness um i think both of us feel so strongly about how important intercollegiate athletics are to both of our institutions all the life skills that are taught out here in the football field and all of our athletic teams mean the world to these young people and that's why both teams send kids into the workforce that are really difference makers and that's what makes grand view and morningside really special places now what you need to know about my good friend john here is he really transformed athletics at morningside university i had the great honor of following him serving on the on the nai council of presidents with john he chaired the council of presidents i had the honor the of of following him in that role and what john has done for athletics at morningside is absolutely incredible you need to research the story i'm i'm and and i and i have used him as a model but then what he did to contribute to athletics at the naia level is also really incredible so it's it's just such a joy to be here in this final game with such a good friend and somebody who's really kind of been a model for me and for us as i've tried to lead our athletic programs that means the world to me and we have been incredibly good friends and have worked very closely together and i have that same respect for what kent's enrollment at grandview and the image of the institution has been transformed all because of this guy so way to go well thank you too so much this was not only a unique but very special opportunity to not only interview two good friends but two people who are bringing up the collegiate institutions of the naia not only on the field but off the field so thank you both so very much we'll see who ends up walking away with the title but we know the state of iowa is winning tonight we'll be back in a little bit [Applause] morningside mustangs coming back on the field here in durham all tied at 21 grand view and morningside for an naia national championship with forest connelly i'm drew felios fun halftime segment hosted by kristen bedard highlights of the first half sullivan got it going early it is man gerald sama and got him into the groove as he hit anthony turner there spreading it around to several different receivers bennett spry also railing it in and forced i think a solid first half from the cubic well the one thing i like about sullivan he stays tall in the pocket even when pressure's coming he was able to get the ball down the field jurgensmeyer makes the grab he could have run for days absolutely but it seemed like jurgen smith hadn't done anything since that first drive they keyed in on him they are not allowing him to beat him but everybody else is stepping up to the plate you see sims power it over he's done a great job rushing the football this afternoon he has 81 yards right now at the half and then the defense finally stepped up for grand view and got on top of dolan check yeah grandview defense came up with three turnovers that's one of them right there tremendous interception made by demario luckett then off to the races austin johnson makes the catch and this is the big turnover right here i think this is the turning point in the ball game because morningside looked like they were getting ready to run away from him but then grandview makes the big play and they go right back down the field with a big play of their own that's bennett's spry he had several big plays huge sequence right here as grandview was able to tie up the game dolan check kept on firing that's also picked off though vikings had a chance to retake the lead they did just that it's spry on that fade route scoring grandview back on top 21-14 but then key sequence just before the half they go for it on fourth down get a little luck in the process and you see right there the catch on the tip and then dolan check delivers the ball down the field and that is the nfl catch once again squeezing the football and then he gets the ball to his big playmaker austin johnson all right let's send it down to kristen bedard with joe woodley coach you forced three turnovers in that first half how do you keep that mustang offense off balance yeah um thank goodness we did we're not doing very well right now defensively and uh gotta get some things squared away usually just alignment type things but uh that's correct to them we knew they're a great offense and um you know that's that that's what we fully expected but but you know we're a good defense and uh we got to get it figured out a little bit probably a little bit more so in the run game i thought we've done a pretty decent job of keeping their quarterback uh kind of off balance with his reads and things like that which is a little bit of the game plan to kind of junk it up on him and uh and it's worked you know in that regard we've you know we've got two interceptions right now and um you know uh if we don't start playing better defense we gotta we probably gotta rely on those turnovers and that's never a good thing but uh i got faith our guys will come back uh regroup uh make some adjustments here and uh we'll figure out a way to to slow them down a little bit better what were those adjustments or what can we expect to see from your offense as we move into the second half uh i think the offense has done a good job uh to this point a lot of big plays we're probably on the plus side of the ledger in that with our explosive plays and um you know i felt confident in that uh with who our quarterback is who our receivers are and offensive lines doing a good job protecting uh protecting johnny in the past game and uh i don't know what the rushing stats look like but i feel like we've effectively ran it a few times uh but uh you know it's a tie ball game national championship you know just uh you got 30 minutes for the rest of your life and you know that's kind of what we told those guys up there let's go make some history and we're right there on the doorstep got to get off to a good start here on this opening drive on defense all right coach thank you so much drew all right thank you kristen joe woodley grand view head coach third season as head coach and really become a figurehead in naia football and before he was named head coach at grand view he was the offensive coordinator the defensive coordinator as well forrest he understands both sides of the football and he says his quarterback johnny sullivan paid him the highest compliment said i got three daughters at home and i hope one day they marry somebody of the caliber and the character of my quarterback johnny sullivan some really really touching stuff from head coach to quarterback and quarterback was right there on the call listening to him say that so obviously these guys are very tight they've gotten here for a reason and you know how important team chemistry is in championship football well it's interesting when we asked coach whitley to talk about his quarterback and and what he meant to the team he almost didn't want to do it because he was sitting right next to him and he said you want me to kind of you know talk great about the guy and he's right here you know and they joked around with it so you can tell there's a different type of coach quarterback relationship and you love to see the respect that they have for one another caleb schweigert back to return it nathan hamilton puts it in the air for grand view second half underway from durham and if the second half is half of it's half as exciting as the first gonna have one heck of a finish it has been a wild ride here so far and when you go back and you look at that fourth down conversion and ultimate touchdown to tie the game that may be the biggest drive of this ball game if morningside is able to win because they come back out to get this football you know they could be down by a score getting the football trying to chase the tie right now they're trying to get ahead now spot this football at the 30. the naia player of the year takes over out of bellevue nebraska joe dolan check senior quarterback for morningside incredible numbers this season but a couple interceptions in that first half this one's also tipped tell you what the vikings have been getting their hands on it tonight that was number 43 rocky schoenfelder the sophomore defensive end who was all over the field and once again as an offensive lineman what defensive lineman are taught to do when they can't get to the quarterback and they see him release the football they're taught to get their hands up so you've got to get that two-hand punch in that midsection to stop them from reaching up to try and knock the football down austin johnson he is run down on that far side as kyle kluge made the stop it'll be a third down and long here to start for morningside and i don't like the east-west passing game i need to see more north south both of these teams are very fast sideline the sideline and you're not going to be able to plant that foot and get north and south the majority of the time passing it east and west you've got to have this passing game going north and south so third and long here to start half number two for the mustangs and again timeout by side talk things over here seen that often where they've kind of second guessed themselves have not seen that a lot from the mustangs throughout this 20-21 season well you heard coach woodley as he came out you know at the half when he talked to christian he said look we want to kind of jumble things up we want to make dolan check think what his pre-snap reads we want to confuse him and when you're doing that to the quarterback you're also doing that to the offensive lineman as an offensive lineman your pre-snap reads kind of tell you where you want to go and how you want to do your blocking schemes when you've got guys moving all around and you're trying to decipher who's doing what it confuses everybody on the offense what it also does drew it makes you go more vanilla with your offensive game plan in your offensive scheme and if i'm morningside i'm just going to look to try and get the ball to my big playmaker jurgen's mind as i said he kind of got quiet after that big first series he had a big catch on the sideline which once again i think is one of those catches that pro scouts will look at and say okay this guy is legitimate but you've got to get him the ball more jurgensmeyer in that bunch formation now he'll split out to the bottom of your screen let's see if dolan check looks his way and he will dull and check now under pressure the pocket collapses and he's going to be sacked big number 90 made the play that's kai mosely the junior defensive tackle in its fourth down and a defensive line is starting to get pressure they're getting up the field they're getting good fits you've got to play with violent hands if you're if you're an offensive lineman too much holding on the outside not enough punching too much catching by the offensive tackles you've got get that kick step back keep your shoulders square to the line of scrimmage and keep those shoulders back because what happens when you keep those shoulders back when those defensive linemen reach now they're overreaching and you can punch them and knock them off their course ball is deflected grandview's gonna have it on the five-yard line credit number 32 who was able to make that play that was seth adrian pushing the morningside player back into the punter and another big play this one on special teams for the vikings it's just like an offensive lineman you've got to sit down in your stance you can't be too high because if you are you have no leverage you see him get pushed back into the punter you've got to sit down hunker down and not allow yourself to get pushed backwards so the field just got a whole lot shorter for grand view five yards away now from taking the lead once again johnny sullivan comes back onto the field couple touchdowns no int's thus far [Applause] trips to the right sullivan looks that way throws and complete 28 has been the hot man so far in this game carson rollinger looked at him that time but went through his hands and grant you couldn't have asked for a better start to the second half you know get a stop you know get a sack now get the ball back on a block punt you know if they can get a score right here whoa that momentum changes [Applause] grandview crowd on their feet same can be said for morningside back and forth we go here in this national championship throw the fader out near side it's caught but i don't think the feet were in just needed one foot to come down anthony turner was that a bounce and it's interesting they throw the favor out to the boundary side of the field that's the short side of the field there's not a lot of room for turning to work you've got to throw that fade route to the wide side of the field the field side where you give turner a lot more room to work and use that size advantage foe you should be an offensive coordinator third down [Applause] would be a huge stop for the mustangs if they can come up with it sullivan in trouble sullivan stays on his feet gets a block sullivan towards the goal line did he get in he is down at the one and i'm telling you right now drew i'm going for it from coach woodley i'm challenging my offensive line right now i'm letting them know we came here to win a championship and this is where you win championships but a great job by sullivan he would not go down he continued to fight through would be tacklers and he put his head down trying to get to the end zone so it's an offensive lineman this is when you step up this is when you play grown man square 10 football you bear crawl you get underneath those defensive linemen you push them back and you allow your quarterback guy to get it in on a quarterback sleep or you allow the back to run up your backside for the touchdown biggest play of the game sullivan hands it off touchdown on the second effort [Applause] vikings back on top and it's ali scott the sophomore in an excellent job by scott putting his head down and keeping his feet churning he did not stop on contact he continued to fight fight fight until he got the ball over the goal line fo he was stop cold i mean he was not gonna get there it was that second effort that powered him through teammates congratulating him on that sideline and he deserves it what a play nathan hamilton to give the vikings a seven point lead so how about grand view the big play on special teams and then the touchdown by ali scott and a great job by the officers lyman getting that push and watch scott continue to grind grind brian turn to the side and fall forward for the touchdown [Music] the 2021 naia football national championship is brought to you by baron rings big game usa box out sports bsn sports daktronics first down playbook herf jones hometown ticketing huddle by masters transportation presto sports by really shorts travel management and signature championship ranks durham north carolina the site morningside mustangs trailing by seven grandview vikings on top true felios forest connelly kristen bedard and our phenomenal crew out here and durham beautiful night for football and a little bit of rain in the pre-game but it has subsided and now joe dolan check the niia player of the year has been contained just a bit by grandview here tonight trots back onto the field their offense and not a familiar spot trailing here in the second half remember this team blew out everybody throughout 20-21 [Music] start at the 25 first down and 10. [Applause] caleb swigert in motion dull in check hands it off and it sims anthony sims another good run they'll pick up seven stopped by nate weiland be about three yards shy of the first down and i like the idea of running anthony sims i think you need to well he's limping off the field right now we know he came into this game a little bit banged up so we need to watch that and you know see how that affects this offense and what they want to do but i think establishing a rushing attack will allow dolan check to get a little bit more comfortable right now he does not look comfortable back there throwing the football so second and three dolan check hands it off that's the big physical back they use in short yardage situations nicely done by matt strecker and a columbus nebraska the senior columbus nebraska small town in nebraska very familiar great sports fans in the state of nebraska as well as iowa toss this one out jurgensmeyer will take it to the 40. some guys like jurgensmeyer foe you wonder you know university of nebraska could probably use guys like number 81 in their offense scott frost well i know coach frost would love to have a dragons man i think anybody in college football would love to have a dragons meyer he's just a ball player he's a gamer now second and five schweigert in motion how about that just whips back around the quarterback and dolan check a little bit off trying to deliver it a little bit of frustration you also see right there fo well one of the things i think that's bothering dolan check is grandview is only rushing four down lyman they're dropping seven back into coverage so what they're doing they're not giving dolan check anywhere to go with the football so he has to hold it a little bit longer to allow his receivers to go through their route concepts and then try to come back to him for the football but with those four pass rushers they're getting to dolan check which if i'm a quarterback i'd be angry too you've got five to block four they need to do a better job of protecting him and giving him the time that he needs there comes that pressure dolan check unloads and it's tipped away dropping back and making that play clay freimuth the linebacker but once again he's got offensive lineman falling at his feet because they're getting pushed back into the pocket look at it you've got an offensive lineman and defensive lineman coming dead towards him right in the middle and that's the one place quarterbacks don't like to see pressure that's instant pressure when you get pressure between those guards so punny situation here colton earl beck the punter remember last one was blocked and that one was nearly blocked this is gonna be a flag though oh it's gotta be there was contact at the 30-yard line the only reason they didn't throw a flag is if he tipped the football that's the big question did he tip the football i'm not understanding why there's not a flag on that play wow crowd is up in arms really interested to see the replay yeah did he tip the football and i think maybe he did you saw the assistant coach come out there let's take one more look [Applause] oh man can't tell if he did it was by a fingernail from the 45 grandview takes over vikings getting some breaks here in this game not gonna be much mustangs defense up to the task and again number nine all over the field tyler winger senior out of holstein iowa and what has to happen is the defensive line need to play with violent hands continue to fight these offensive linemen to allow wenger pingle and portis to flow downhill they came into this game 278 combined tackles 39 tackles for loss they need to continue to be able to flow downhill and that depends on what the defensive line is able to do with those violent hands and keeping those offensive linemen occupied and not able to get to the second level sullivan again stepping in trying to go for the home run oh lots of grabbing going on on that play no flag can be called that one not catchable but again wide receiver all tied up and it was gerald sama who was the intended target and right now i think this is one of the most important third downs of this ball game and watch again for number 28 carson rollinger that is his favorite third down receiver morningside has to be very aware where number 28 is third and long situation here mustangs crowd comes alive there's 28. rollinger has been clutch [Applause] look down the middle tipped up in the air caught a little bit of luck never hurts [Applause] and number 12 bennett spry has made plays all night long that's another catch for a first down and i guess morningside had their tip-up luck play you know on the fourth down now grandview gets their tip-up luck play on the third down i mean what more can you ask for the defender to do on that play a good job by lanell boyd to try and knock it down but a better job by bennett spry to keep his eyes on the football and be able to grab it and get that first down lots of tip balls we've seen tonight on both sides vikings run it stopped that'll be a two-yard loss weston schultz came out of nowhere the senior defensive line out of mason city and western shows just made a grown man tackle on that play you just hit somebody right that's called a slobber knocker you know you see him you hit him and you boom that is a great play by the defensive lineman that's what you want to do that's when you're telling somebody hey i'm tired of you guys trying to run the football my way don't come over here or you're going to get knocked back that was casey hill the ball carrier he's only had a few touches tonight [Applause] second down you can see why grantview likes to stick to the pass once again it has been working under the lights sullivan just throws it away crowd wants a grounding call and that should be a grounded because there is no receiver in the vicinity he is within the tackle box the ball did not get past the line of scrimmage i don't know why the officials are not throwing the flag on that play [Music] two questionable non-calls right now in the last couple of plays that have went the way of grandview first on that punt where he ran into the punter and now on what was obviously intentional grounding third and 13. mustangs trying to come up with another big play defensively sullivan throws a fastball it's caught up in the air and coming down with it is seth jewell the freshman and watch chef jewel just go up and grab this ball out of the sky great job he wasn't worried about getting hit he understands their defenders flying up the field his job is to squeeze the football and get the first down and lay it all on the line for his ball club and that is just what he did seth jewell was committed to illinois state switches up starring in naia football they have got some athletes do the vikings first down now from the 33. sullivan and the flag will come down blow this play dead hey they do have flags and the crowd sarcastically goes nuts i understand so these fan bases are great for we pulled up in the parking lot the fun that they were having there's just something special about naia competition absolutely these kids lay it on the line and you'd love to see them continue to chase that dream first down brennan bring an extra man up fake the reverse trying to run it forward ali scott ganged up on this time that's carter anderson leading the way the senior out of blair nebraska and a good job by the morningside defense to have smart eyes on that play there was a lot of misdirection going on they wanted to try and get them flowing one way but they did a good job playing their keys keeping smart eyes not going for the eye candy but staying in position to be able to make the big defensive play anderson goes 255 pounds he's got some guns and now second and 15. granby's had it good portion of time here clock continues to run under seven minutes now in this third quarter sama goes in motion for the vikings sullivan trying to throw this one again fake the throw throw it up into no man's land and it's intercepted no ball comes out and that's just a bad play by johnny sullivan they act like they were throwing it to the outside you saw anthony turner jump up as if the ball went over his head i think they thought that was going to get the defenders looking into the back field fo i've i've never seen that faking like the receiver caught the ball that that threw everybody didn't it well he faked like the ball went over his head which would allow for the defensive backs to get caught looking but he did not look down the field and i'm when i say he i mean jonathan's jonathan johnny sullivan to see that there was no receiver in the vicinity of where he threw the football third and 14. [Applause] look at the long routes being run putting a lot on sullivan's plate here and that's going to be intercepted yes the ball was caught and they'll mark it just outside the 25-yard line and quarterbacks are taught when you don't have what the play calls for throw it away you cannot try and make something that is not there there was nowhere to go at the football he should not have thrown that ball you live to fight another day but right here he throws the ball into no man saying look at all of the defenders over there three defenders one offensive player bad play by johnny sutherland on that play [Music] so after the turnover morningside with the football back from the 18-yard line sims has gotten the bulk of the carries here tonight for the mustangs gets five on first down morningside trying to tie this game up after grandview took the lead coming out of the locker room remember anthony sims came off the field he was limping on that last series good side 27 back on the field looks like he's okay and they're feeding him he's got that great vision that great cut ability and some breakaway speed to go with it got to that second level before he was tackled by clay freymouth but again a little bit gimpy and he's just playing all on heart right now he's giving it everything he's got and once again as an offensive lineman when you see a guy out there giving his his all like that it motivates you to do more and you have to start to wonder if the coaching staff starts to look and say are we hurting this young man more than we're helping him we know he's one of our big players our big time players but at the same time you want to make sure that he's healthy after this football game is over and you want to make sure you know that he can do other things that he may be wanting to do like maybe chase a professional opportunity or continue to play ball at the next level in another league you want to be careful with your players and take care of them i know they want to win the championship and i know he's probably fighting the coaching staff to continue to get back in there but after a while you have to start to take a look at that and make sure he's not hurting himself and hurting the team yeah you see both sidelines see calvin right there senior defensive end being helped off to the training table as well for grand view so anthony sims who is still trying to get back to 100 shaken up for the mustangs and they'll go to their big running back a little bit different look he brings and matt strecker short gained to the 40. [Music] and one of the things i think the coaching staff from morningside needs to look at is sprinting joe dolan check outside of the pocket he's been getting those balls knocked down because they've been able to get those hands up the defensive lineman spread them outside a little bit give him more time to look down the field give the receivers more time to get through the routes schweiger now in motion look his way sullivan hits him on his numbers and schweigert is not able to get the edge nicely done gianni angulo he's played a good game over there for grand view number three right now grand view defenders are staying home they're playing their keys and they're doing a good job of making the tackle once the ball carriers get the ball in their hands third down tonight has been an adventure for both teams [Applause] [Music] [Applause] mustangs need about six here [Music] dolan check surveying delivers jerkinsmeyer the right man at the right time [Applause] [Music] and sometimes you just gotta do what you do and feed your guy and you see right now getting the ball to reed jurgensmeyer one thing he does a really good job of is yards after the catch he knows where the defender is on his back and he turns the opposite way to be able to get up the field numbers tonight on third down five of nine for the mustangs back to business and it's sims tell you what this guy man he had a hard time getting up a few minutes ago right back on the field doing his thing i mean there is no tomorrow it's a national championship at stake well it's like he gets hurt and then he goes to the sideline for a player two shakes it off and he comes back out and he looks great and healthy and then he runs the ball two or three times he gets a lot of positive yards and then he goes down again this guy is as tough as they come over 100 yards two touchdowns [Music] for anthony sims second and seven dolan check stands in again underneath and schweiger always makes that first guy miss and then takes it to the 31. and this is when these guys are most dangerous when they get the ball in the open field and they're able to be playmakers that's what you want to do watch you get the ball of swagger he's able to get north and south that's why i like the north and south passing game the crossing routes because they're up the field they're already able to plant that foot and get positive yards so another first down here for morningside best drive here in this third quarter dolan check gets out of trouble or at least tries to eventually the pocket will cave in and they'll take him down at the 33. and once again there is no excuse for grandview to be able to get pressure on the quarterback rushing four against five offensive linemen they've got seven back into coverage and that's why dolan check is not able to get the ball down the field that's also why dolan check has thrown so many interceptions because there's so many defenders back there waiting that's cam maxfield who is down he is shaken up here for grand view so while the trainers look at him we'll step aside 28-21 mustangs on the move [Music] welcome back to durham county memorial stadium grandview leads morningside 28-21 now we're seeing some incredible athletes on the field but helping make this game run smoothly is a very incredible all female crew serving as the ball people for this game now not only are they doing it for the championship game they did it for the senior bowl last night these ladies are part of a local carolina phoenix women's tackle football team drew and forrest it's serious so whether you're playing the game or helping out we've got some serious players down here well without question naia doing it right great to see them down on the field everybody has a part and the biggest event of the year for the naia this football national national championship 28-21 morningside again moving it anthony sims showing the toughness did the ball come out there towards the end it may have i think morningside was able to jump back on top of it here it's gonna be second down so morningside critical drive they trail by seven as we round the corner here on the third quarter here's one more look let's see if that ball comes out and it does definitely right at the end and i'm trying to figure out how grandview didn't recover that football [Applause] dolan check on second at 8. sims still running hard boy they have a lot of faith in number 27. gets about four that time so a third down very manageable here coming up and you see the rain has started again now how will that affect them holding on to the football how will it affect the quarterbacks being able to spin it and get it down the field like they have in this ballgame up to this point turnovers have been a big story tonight morningside has committed three of them two interceptions one fumble dolan check looking end zone incomplete threw a little bit too far that time you see how it's a little bit more slick down on that surface and then also the ball gets heavy when it gets wet so you feel like you have to put a little bit more on it and that may have been what it happened on that play because dolan check had his receiver he was behind both defenders going towards the corner of the end zone and as opposed to the rain we saw earlier in the ball game this is more consistent rain you're seeing the wind blow the rain is going towards the side so it's going to be interesting to see how this affects both ball clubs heading into the fourth quarter and it's fourth down at dolan check big play here for the mustangs big wide open hole he'll rush right through it and pick up the first down first and goal morningside and a great job by dolan check as the defender came towards him to pull the ball up like he was getting ready to release it it stopped the defender long enough for him to cut it back to the inside watch on this play he's getting ready to get tiger see the defender but he puts the ball up which fakes the defender route and allows him to cut it back to get the first down heads-up play by the senior the naia player of the year putting it on his shoulders here team trailing by seven sims once again the running back jack sievert moves to that right tackle spot and they're going to get a couple yards here take it inside the five spotted at the four more hard running there from sims so morningside 13-0 considered the favorite coming in here to this championship grand view though said during the week we don't feel like underdogs and tell you what it looked very even so far in this game [Applause] keep an eye on jurgensmeyer again he's in the slot middle of your screen number 81. instead they go to sims sims with that quick cut back and he scores [Applause] [Music] and even a 70 sims is better than most backs in naia football once again he came into this ball game at 1492 yards rushing 29 touchdowns and you see his effect when he gets the ball out of the backfield chase carter's extra point is up and good so many ties so many lead changes here thus far for the fourth time tonight we're tied anthony sims got the shiftiness got the determination got the desire shaken off what looked like a sore ankle there came off the field a couple times but tell you what he's trying to stuff right there it looks pretty good to me [Music] 125 yards a game for this young man forest fed lot of big time moments throughout college football this year foe i know you've been traveling the country calling games as you normally do also watching them on tv as well your favorite spot on the couch anytime you can just you know biggest inspiration or biggest theme you think in this college football season that's kind of had an impact on you i think it starts to become a why not us football season uh you know you look at cincinnati why not us you know you look at jackson state university uh getting the number two and number one in some case uh overall recruit why not us michigan you look at michigan finally jim harbaugh you know finally getting over that hump and beating ohio state and beating them soundly why not us and so i see that going on right now with grand view everyone thought that morningside with this high-powered offense who's going to come in here and run away with it and grandview has come out here and said why not us so i think that has been the theme for this year in college football johnny sullivan getting ready to take his offense back on the field had that one poor throw where he threw it into no man's land here in the third quarter this will be one and done here we'll take it to the fourth quarter here on espn so vikings surging forward they'll pick up three and that will do it for quarter number three so 28 all grand view and morningside in all iowa naia football championship night here in durham fourth and final quarter hold up those four fingers we're coming back in a moment [Music] joe woodley's father mike woodley started this grand view football program 15 years ago and led grandview to a national championship in 2013. three years ago the son joe takes over and here he is one quarter away from winning it all coach woodley inspired he inspires everyone on this team and he says he's inspired by his quarterback who's played a whale of a game here thus far johnny sullivan will be put in a lot of key situations here for grand view can he deliver third down make it second and seven and this one is caught dangerous spot but again bennett's spry his sixth catch of the night and he's approaching 100 yards so that ball will be spotted about a yard and a half shy of a first down it's gonna be third down and short and this is where if your grand view what do you do do you try and run it the running game has not been there all night well you be smart i think you run a quarterback sneak i mean right now there's a play they haven't run all night you want to continue to keep this drive extend this drive it's the safest play put the quarterback under center and run it [Music] well johnny sullivan said he loves tom brady now's a chance to to be like him with that qb sneak flag will come down there as holly scott should have the first down and that probably was a free play there for grand view yeah he went with the heart count you saw the defender jump in that's something the coaching staffs get very angry about you're right there you're looking at the football you want to make a big play but you cannot go until the ball is moved you cannot go off sound [Music] what you've done right now is you've extended this drive if they can put a score on the board you talked about it earlier drew morningside has not had many tough ball games this year but grand view they had a tough one last week when they beat defending champion lindsey wilson they had to have four stops at the end of that game to win that football game so they're more you know comfortable in these types of situations and let's see how that plays out quick snap to sullivan all perfectly delivered on the quick slam and again it's spry what a game he has had over a hundred yards now first down vikings well he continues to make himself a big target for his quarterback um once again you're seeing these kids from iowa you know start to have to feel the effects of playing down here uh and and some guys are cramping up now we've got another player down for granville it looks like it's a cramp but you know once again spry is doing a really really good job of making himself available for his quarterback and sullivan is doing a good job of not leading his receivers on these crossing routes into the defenders jason weiland came off the field the freshman offensive lineman for grandview and a look at spry's numbers over 100 yards seven catches over 15 o'clock and a touchdown first down ollie scott once again driven back and it's big number 17 weston schultz once again [Applause] you know every time western schultz makes a tackle it's a violent i wouldn't want i would not want to run at that guy right there if i see 17 fo i'm going the other way let me tell you as an offensive tackle when you see a guy uh when you're game planning for the follow for the next week and he's six foot three 240. those are the guys that give you concern because those are speed rushes those are fast guys he's a long guy six three long arms and you see the effects he knows what to do when he gets to the ball carrier mustangs crowd come alive here on second attempt four wide outs in the game for the vikings sullivan just throws it up and throws it out of bounds i think he knew he had nothing so may have been one of the better throws of the night but just like we've seen on the other side you've got three pass rushers from morningside eight guys back into coverage sullivan should still be able to look and find a receiver you've got five blocking three they've got to do a better job on the offensive line protecting the quarterback and giving him time to look down the field and find somebody open saw the third down story have to wonder could this possibly be four down territory for the vikings absolutely not and a flag will come down here let's see who moved i think it's gonna be a false start [Applause] and these are mental errors that you cannot have at this point of the ball game you're already at third and ten now you put yourself behind the sticks third and fifteen you're predictable right now on offense they know you're going to throw the football they're rushing three they're dropping eight back into coverage you know when you look at a situation like this i think a screen pass is a good play because you get lyman able to get down the field and block these guys you get the ball to a receiver or back and they've got a convoy sullivan lets it go intercepted at the 33-yard line mustangs have got it back and once again you've got eight back into coverage there will be nowhere to go at the football you've got to get the ball to a playmaker i thought a screen pass would have been great on that play you know those three pass wrestlers were coming up the field trying to get pressure i thought they should have run the screen i think they will still be running the football right now and had the ball going down the field drew bessie comes up with the big play as morningside defense once again turns the tide when we come back mustangs football all tied here in durham big play made by drew bessie the senior defensive back at a palmyra nebraska the throw by sullivan force what would you have liked to see here i would have liked to have seen the screen pass because you've got three aggressive guys coming up the field you got eight back into coverage that means you've got smaller defenders and you would had a convoy of offensive lineman to block those guys and clear away for the back or the receiver to get the first down hand it off to anthony sims gonna pick up about three so it looked like grandview was in control of that turnover battle which is so key in this game both coaches said they got to win the turnover ratio and but see grandview's had two big turnovers here and this second half so coach ryan's team starting to make a statement sims again not going to get anything this time maybe a yard before he was hit and dropped nick weiland made the play number 15. then his third down well as great as sims has played tonight you have to wonder if he has enough torque and explosion left to get positive yards you know this defense is coming up the field and every possession is the most important possession of the ball game right now for both ball clubs they have to put points on the board third down at six dolan check trying to settle in quick screen and there's the play you've been wanting fo morningside runs it to perfection caleb schweiger takes it across midfield first down and it's been there all afternoon both defenses are playing uber aggressive they're trying to get up the field especially when you've got three pass rushers you're dropping eight back you know you know what they're doing they're coming hard they're trying to get to the quarterback they're trying to put pressure on him and once again swagger does a good job of getting up in the air squeezing that football not worried about where any defenders are coming from but more so about getting that possession of the ball and getting the first down now setting up sims pick up seven here on first down grand views defense again they're not the biggest they're not very deep i think warning sides defense a little bit more stout than grand views although grand views keep in mind huge defensive stop last game against lindsey wilson to get them to this point but can they do something like that again here tonight yeah because you think about these receivers and the running back sims there's a lot of moving parts on this morningside offense so i think it'll be a much more difficult task no disrespect to lindsey wilson because we know they're the reigning champs and they are a great program but this is a whole different beast out here we've got jurgensmeyer to deal with he'll have a first down he knew exactly where that marker was catch the ball go down right there move the chains and i really hope this kid gets into a camp i think he has the size and the ability to play at the next level i would love to see someone give him an opportunity throw it out here schweiger squeezes it take him down at the 34. yeah jurgensmeyer interesting story foe he's married seems like he's been on campus forever even his teammates said that this guy's been here 10 years it seems like just keeps coming back for more there hasn't been a more important player to morningside football over the past five years than 81 reed jurgensmeyer he's a grown man three consecutive seasons with 1300 plus receiving yards i mean he's not flashy he just gets the job done every saturday afternoon look his way now look long go for the home run down the sideline it's caught reed jerk inspire touchdown [Applause] and i'll tell you what coach ryan and reid jurgensmeyer's ears must have been burning because we said it all night get the guy to your big time play maker he has been doing it for four years you see his ability when you've got man coverage and you throw it out there to jurgensmeyer 95 of the time he's gonna come down with the football carter's extra point up and good 35-28 another lead change mourning side with the advantage 9 22 to go and another magical moment in the college career of reed jurgensmeyer and i like what dolan check did he allow for jurgensmeyer to get up the field he climbed the pocket he felt the pressure and he delivered the ball where only jurgen smile can make a play on it and jurgensmeyer once again able to squeeze that football and get look what looked like both feet down what's once again is one of those sunday tight plays i'm gonna continue to say it this kid has ability i really hope one of these pro scouts give this young man an opportunity you know who he kind of reminds me of remember a player wide receiver for the tampa bay bucks a long time ago joe jarrer vicious yes yes he does he's got the same type of size uh the same type of catch catch radius and he looks like zero vicious a little bit out there um but once again when you've got three consecutive seasons with over 1300 yards receiving that lets people know that you're a special and different type of player and then he has the intangible that you can't teach which is size six foot three 210 pounds i don't know how fast this 40 is but i tell you what this young man can play football he is an naia legend and it has been a joy watching him play over the past four years mustangs to kick it off and can the vikings answer it's one of those heavyweight fights fo we're in round 14 here back in the old days remember haggler hearns hagler leonard 14 15 rounds that's what we're dealing with in grand view do they have something left i don't know if this is a heckler here's this is more of an aaron alexis arguelle we're going to stand toe to toe in the middle of the ring and we're just going to throw blows and whoever gets hit last is going to lose the game or lose the fight i mean these guys are going at it and giving it everything that they've got now i tell you what for grandview you've got to score on this drive i don't think you can give the ball back to morning side and think you're going to get it back sullivan releases got his man off the fingertips though great coverage out there jamal jones was covering step four step looking for that big wide out anthony turner and morningside needs to be careful they're playing zero coverage a lot on the back end of that defense or they're playing cover one you've got to keep safeties behind you cannot let anything get behind you because right here if he's able to squeeze that football turner there's no one else he's running to the end zone [Applause] fake it to scott come near side caught right there toes down for seth jewell the freshman good recognition he knew exactly where that sideline was now what you have to look for they're keeping both safeties back they kept both safeties back on that plate look for these defensive backs to possibly try and jump some of those short routes like that because they've got safety help over the top the third down and one once again if you're grand view remember the running game has not been your strength all night passing game has short yardage situation what do you do heavy package in for the vikings ali scott 26 as the running back we'll call his number he's hit in the backfield but the second effort again still going to come up short and it's still going to be fourth down and one and i think johnny sullivan went the wrong way on that play i think he turned the wrong way you saw him had to find scott when he turned around to hand him the football off watch this play look you see he turned the wrong way on that play and he had to find scott at the last moment the quarterback cannot have those types of plays he's played very well this afternoon and i know he's kind of you know hitting himself like you know i cannot do that you know you don't want to beat a guy up when he's down because he's giving it all he has this afternoon but you cannot make plays like that you've got on a big third down when you're down this late in the ball game you've got to know where to go and what to do so a critical three and out there and this punt gonna take a vikings bounce what the punters done a good job all night long setting up grand view so crush wits nicely done they'll down at just outside the 20. when we come back morningside football 7 45 between the mustangs and a national championship so there's the score line through four quarters grand view and morningside here tonight great to have you with us drew felio's force connolly and kristen bedard down on the field post game celebration will follow this game question is what team will be celebrating dolan check wide open once again and it's that man reed jurgensmeyer starting to take over this game well you got to think for dollar check and for jordan schmeyer this is their last opportunity to play football together and they're going to make sure they go out swinging so first down to 10. in the 43. and if you notice morningside is taking your time you want to run as much clock as possible you of course you want to put another score on the board but run as much clock as possible fake it to sims jergens meyer going long dolan check gonna throw it long his way there it is another big one jurgensmeyer once again and they had two people over there covering him and you saw james meyer just kind of put his hand up and wave hit your thumb and check like hey throw it over here i'm open i'm open and if you're the safety you've got to get over there you cannot allow him to get behind the defensive back and not have a safety over the top you've got to bracket him that's some kind of chemistry right there dolan check has with jerk inspired those two just kind of looked at each other and one knew exactly where the other was [Music] gonna push him back five here you know i wanna mention something as well that i've seen throughout the afternoon there's been a lot of sportsmanship by both ball clubs i've seen guys help other guys up you know off the field off the turf uh you know from opposite teams and you don't see that often especially in a championship ball game in a championship atmosphere and that's a reflection of both of these programs of the presidents of these universities the coaching staffs and the character for both of these ball clubs dolan check again jurgensmeyer has his number called it as soon as he caught the football so well covered that time david tolentino made the play substitutions now along the defensive front garrett gilliland will come in for grand view and if you notice you're starting to see guys with their hands on their hips for the grandview defensive line that means fatigue is starting to set in this is when you start to run the football you know you're going to run clock you're going to beat them up and pound them up a little bit on the inside [Applause] to afua in the game for morningside number 35 in motion for the mustangs dolan jack fires and that's schweiger schweigert had a big night they're just chipping away right now and i mean swagger he just reminds me so much of wes welker i mean he catches the football and he's just a tough guy to bring down he jumps over people he runs through people he pulls himself out of arm tackles he's done a really good job when he's got possession of the football not going down and i think yards after the catch have been very key for this morningside offense all afternoon these guys have been able to catch the football and break tackles throughout the afternoon into the evening [Music] third down call it four so after that illegal motion mustangs trying to convert a first down or perhaps a touchdown here dolan check quick throw and that one's incomplete on the coverage that was tornado again and dolan check says how is that not pass interference and then some tough breaks tonight by the officials but if the mustangs can make it a two score game here they certainly like their chances with under five minutes and what do i always say kickers matter people always talk about kickers they really matter this kick could possibly put them in a position to claim another championship if they get that two-score lead helps two in your kickers a second team all-american chase carter remember the field is wet from the right hash and it's good no good oh it looked like it did get inside the up right there but the official there to make the call and it is no good if that's no good foe that is very very close because from that angle it looked like a field goal [Applause] and i hope i didn't jinx them let's see right here i think that's just a little bit right yeah i don't know man that look like it may be good to me i mean if it goes directly over the bar that is considered good player down after the play and it is dylan miller being looked at so miller will get up slowly here and his teammate tristan johnson will help him off to a round of applause slick surface well you hope the big fella is going to be okay and what happens a lot of times on plays like that as an offensive lineman or a protector on field goal extra point you get rolled up on the back of your legs so you just have to hope this young man is going to be okay [Applause] so another chance here for sullivan johnny sullivan got the break he was looking for after going three and out last time on the field so this could be the last chance here for grand view got to make something happen offensively fake the handoff pump fake gets hit as he throws and the ball is out of bounds and that is a long developing play you see sullivan getting up off the turf he got hit by the defensive lineman dominic barrett but that was a long developing play that was a double move and sullivan did not have time and sullivan's kind of gimpy right now we got to keep an eye on that he got hit pretty hard on that play by bear let's see if that affects his ability to get the ball down the field but i didn't think i would see a long development play like that because you put your quarterback in harm's way when you do that because you force the offensive lineman to block a little bit longer [Applause] sullivan second down delivers this one man that's nicely done carson rollinger makes the grab gets out of bounds just shy of the 30. had to get to the 30 for a first down so another third and short here see that offensive line foe haven't talked a lot about them all night in the center number 60 clayton mitchell right there middle of the pack really holds things down 78 also left part of your screen mitchell smith he is a rock and that's where you want to run the football if you want to try and get the first down on third and short you run it behind those two guys those are the guys coach woodley identified as his best performers on the offensive line this is where they've struggled though third and short ali scott i don't think he's going to get there it's going to be really close i don't think he got there and once again what morningside has done a really good job on these third and fourth and shorts is get penetration up the field [Applause] [Music] and they may bring the chain gang on the field here to try and measure this see the coaches you have to go for it i mean if you don't get it you got to go for it coach joe woodley out there johnny sullivan have not seen the quarterback sneak tonight at all and i mentioned loves tom brady well now it's a now's a good time to take that qb sneak out of number 12's playbook absolutely because i don't think this is going to make it i think it's going to be a chain short i may be wrong [Applause] about six inches so right now if you're morningside and you're the defensive coaches you're telling them you guys are a chain link away from winning the championship what you gonna do that's the challenge i'll miss you into the defense right now i may even call a timeout and say hey guys we talked about it everything that we've done can you stop them from getting a chain link [Applause] biggest play of the game grown man football right here square chin whoever has the squares chin is going to win this place ali scott again not going to get there the morning side mustangs with the biggest defensive stand of the game [Applause] and if you watched on that play the quarterback sleek was open if they would have did a quick snap but you saw the linebacker come flying up at the last minute i don't like to play handing the ball off to a back when you need one inch and you've got a guy that's four yards behind the line of scrimmage and he's trying to go at an angle you gotta come downhill square chin football lanell boyd made the hit here's one more look you see right there he's handing the ball off five yards behind where they need to get to i don't like that play at all and once again you see the penetration you see everybody flying up and flying towards the line of scrimmage out they've been better off trying to throw the ball on that play so now dolan check tosses to the outside playing free reed jurgensmeyer lowers the shoulder and he is hit out of bounds a little chirping after that he is pumped up here because they can see the national championship in sight and they are not calling off the dogs i would think they would be running the football being safe with the football but they are continuing to run their offense and that is the confidence that the coaching staff has and joe dolan check in his decision making although he's turned the ball over a couple of times he's looked a little bit careless with the football he is the best player in naia football and the coaching staff is showing a reflection of that with them allowing him to throw the ball this late in a game when they've got the lead and they're in a position to win another championship anthony sims this time he'll take it near the 15. and keeping my grand views got three timeouts so interesting to see when they start burning some of those i have not called a timeout just yet a little surprised well that was first down because jergens meyer got the first down on the previous play so i think they're trying to save those timeouts but once again i mean what else can you what can you say about dolan check 405 yards and have those two interceptions but continue to show confidence and throw the ball down the field i mean that is why he's been celebrated as the best player in naia football this season hand it to sims again anthony sims look at those feet continue to churn just grinding out the yardage this is somebody that has limped off the field maybe three times today and you thought that he possibly would not be able to come back into this ball game he is playing on true 1 800 heart and adrenaline and you've got to love how he's landed all on the line for his ball club this afternoon 140 and counting [Music] so grandview just trying to get a stop here but there's not going to be much time especially if morningside's able to kick a field goal make it a two score game you know i don't understand you've got three timeouts you you can't take them with you you got to use them anthony sims see he's gonna stumble just in front of that first down marker and now a timeout will be called so 35-28 just over a minute to play here in durham north carolina morningside mustangs in the driver's seat we'll be right back [Music] look at the morning side faithful looking up at the clock and score knowing this could be their moment is a championship celebration in hand well here comes second chance for chase carter he missed his last field goal try this one from 26 yards out to basically put this game away no questions asked about this one and did you see the crowd everyone was silent until the officials put the signal up for a good field goal and they just erupted what a great feeling for this morningside fan base how about dolan check their words for his kicker that's what this game is all about though you have a tough moment but you keep your head in the game you deliver late for your teammates and now you're 110 away from celebrating let's take a look at the really play of the game brought to you by really own your moments tonight's really play of the game is this one dolan jack to jergens meyer for a huge touchdown and once again dolan check does what he's been doing since he's gotten on campus catch footballs make big plays and come up in big situations and he has continued to dominate when he's on the football field so that is the really play of the game brought to you by really own your moments proud sponsor of naia athletics what a great event once again here at these naia football championships drew felios with forest connelly kristen bedard down on the field she'll be waiting for the post-game celebration so we invite you to stay tuned for that vikings will get the football one more time watch this one sail over so trailing by 10 70 seconds remain for grandview grand view in this football game the entire way they led for much of it but in the second half just key moments they could not convert critical fourth downs and some critical turnovers as well well the defensive line for morningside made some big plays getting penetration getting up the field on some of those third and fourth in shorts and being able to make key tackles to stop drives so first down 25 yard line sullivan does he have something left gets out of the pocket long way to run there he'll step out of bounds at the 32 [Applause] so final game in the college career of johnny sullivan what a ride it has been for him from northern iowa back to grand view the school that recruited him heavily this young man is a football junkie threw it almost 50 times against lindsey wilson came back tonight he competed from start to the now finish and the country staff said him touching the ball every play gave them confidence throughout this season and you see why he's a gamer he's the guy that comes to play [Music] second and three trying to get out of trouble here and just throws it away so tough force when you're in a situation like this you know your team's probably not gonna win and you're a senior you know it's your last game no chance to redeem yourself next season but one thing you can take solace in is you got here to a championship sure you know a lot of teams don't get the opportunity to experience championship week which is a great opportunity you know for these guys to be rewarded for all of their hard work uh so you know for this grand view ball club they've got to experience championship week they're seniors some of their freshmen and this will leave a lasting you know taste in those freshman smiles about what they want to do what they can do to get back to this again and get back to another opportunity to chase the championship [Music] so early movement there from the vikings will push him back five once again stay tuned to our post-game show kristen bedard down on the field it's always a wild celebration after this great event after the game great to see the schools the athletes coaches taking a national title just moments away [Applause] [Music] sullivan hit as he throws and this one's incomplete so was trying to get it to bennett's spry well defended that time and it was isaac pingle getting in there to make the play [Music] fourth down now for johnny sullivan and the vikings i want to mention ken henning the school president of grandview final year as the president for grandview vikings coming back here to durham big moment for him tonight his team now with a fourth down in a big moment for tyler wingert from holstein iowa big game big season great career also and we would be remiss not to mention that as well that's just gonna about do it see steve ryan on that sideline now the fans getting into it and always those big cardboard cutouts mustangs faithful never hesitate to be eccentric we love him for it 38-28 steve ryan he is this consistent and is solid you talk about the the pete carroll the bill belichick of naia football you were looking at him right there [Music] [Applause] [Music] and think about this this makes 195 wins [Applause] 20 seasons i mean think about that [Music] victory formation now darling check the greatest formation in offensive football history and right there sportsmanship has been great granby didn't appreciate donald check took a little extra time to take a knee yeah well i understand you know you you've put it all on the line championship game and you know something like you said some of these guys this is going to be the last time they ever put on the football helmet put on football pads and there's a brotherhood out there and when you and your brothers aren't going to be able to compete and play with one another again it starts to set in and you feel some type of way [Applause] for the third time in four years the morning side mustangs the best in naia football national champions for 20-21 [Music] and the legend of reed jerkinsmeyer lives on [Music] there are a couple of legends on this morningside ball club tyler winger once again out of holstein iowa let's set it down on the field kristen bedard is with the winning coach coach ryan coach ryan the morningside mustangs are champions once again in a very tight ball game how did you get this one done man it was it was uh tough but the guys kept playing we struggled with turnovers in the first half and our defense came out and played lights out in the second half it was fan hey proud of them i mean it was that i mean two years going through that kovid year those guys coming back really i'm proud of them now as a coach when you have the consistency of joe to read how at ease does that make a head coach unbelievable i'm gonna lose reid obviously but he always plays big in big games he did today made critical catches his last touchdown was phenomenal your team is national champions for the third time in four seasons what does it mean now for the powerhouse program that you've created i haven't ever thought of it that way but it says a lot about the players the assistant coaches i have god is just good to me and that's in the end that's what it is god is good to me it's giving me great people to be around it's awesome thank you well coach go congratulate celebrate with your team you guys are champions again gold mustangs tram oh what a great moment for coach ryan and morningside and christian i am impressed with her cat quick ability to get out of the way of the water dump that was awesome well it's time for our first down playbook player of the game reed jurgensmeyer was incredible tonight 13 catches 216 yards putting an exclamation on just an amazing career in naia football and somebody on sunday give this young man an opportunity he has the skill sets to play at the next level i hope someone sees the talent in this young man also want to announce our offensive player of the game anthony sims defensive player of the game jalen portis those two shining on both sides of the football tonight for morningside and that is a picture that is worth priceless i should say coach ryan and jergens meyer embracing anthony sims what toughness he showed tonight and you listen to coach ryan fo what what i love about him he's just so humble you know it just yeah it's just it's awesome to watch this whole uh team is awesome to watch both ball clubs i think both coaching staffs did a great job i think you know one team has to win one has to lose and that's what you hate about championship football it's great that both teams got here but i want to give you know my hats off to coach woodley and the ball club from grandview i thought they did a great job all right let's send it down to kristen bedard who is with reed jurgensmeyer well reid national champions you did it on the back you and your quarterback made it happen what is it like uh it's it's an incredible feeling to be able to see your career it's something that we every player dreams of it feels amazing i can't even put it into words right now you had a couple of huge snags in that fourth quarter what was going through your mind as you were helping lead your team to this victory you know joe joe just puts the ball in the right spot every play that's what we've been doing all year and we just coach roadie caught some great plays out there put us in the right spots and um so you finished 2020 just a little short and finished the job here in 2021 it's been a whirlwind of a year but what does it mean not only for you but for this entire program to come play with that victory yeah it's huge for our program one tenth grade and then losing in the semifinals i mean to get to get that win in the semifinals against northwestern again it was amongst the shoulders coming into this game um it's huge for our program crazy momentum to have three out of four years not a lot of people can say they did that no they cannot so go enjoy that with your teammates congratulations thank you forest all right kristen thanks so much joe dolan check what a night for him had some moments in the first half where he was certainly tested this vikings defense certainly made him work but in the big moments that's what the best players do and he was mvp caliber when it mattered most in that third and fourth quarter well like champions do he continued to fight through it uh he continued to push and he continued to be the great player that he's been all season and that is why they're national champions and what's interesting is the grand view team is still out here on the field and as a coaching staff i like keeping your team on the field when you lose a big game like this because one they need to continue to be appreciated for getting this far and getting to the championship game and they competed their butts off but it also gives them fire for next season to watch the championship presentation and hope that they can be in the position to be getting the trophy all right stand by now for the trophy ceremony as the mustangs will be coordinated lots going on right now down on the field fans chance to walk on the field here in this post
