Natsuki: The Movie (Life in Japan Documentary)

six years ago and fresh out of university I pack my bags and move to Japan to work as an English teacher where I found myself randomly placed in the beautiful far-flung region of Yamagata along Japan's remote northwest coastline in the weeks that followed I began documenting life in my new bewildered surroundings through monthly videos that I would upload to YouTube however as much as I reveled in the adventurous lifestyle of living in rural Japan after one year I'd failed to forge any meaningful connections with the locals amidst the language barrier and a culture I struggled to comprehend then one day that all changed my bumped into an enthusiastic stranger in the street a guy who took me under his wing and became my way into Japan outspoken rebellious and often presumptuous what little English he knew he wasn't afraid to use masky and i quickly became close friends meeting every week to eat drink and attempt to communicate and not long after he began regularly appearing in the monthly YouTube videos where as down-to-earth charismatic personality quickly earned him something of a cult following and today five years later thanks to the power of the Internet a guy living in a remote corner of Japan has been viewed by around 20 million people in every corner of the world his face featured everywhere from news websites to t-shirts and notebooks health there's even an unofficial Nazi fan club and yet for all the entertainment he's brought viewers around the world who is now ski from his daily life in rural Japan to a once their lifetime journey to Europe I followed not ski over the course of several months in an attempt to uncover his story outside of sporadic YouTube appearances and to understand how in a culture where outspoken rebellious individuals are often ostracized how didn't ask you become the antithesis to so many traditional Japanese values you listen to absolute radio welcome I am Pete Donaldson if you have just tuned in there to me too [Music] [Music] about you my breakfast coffee sooner and to singer only breakfast easy mmm so good how many cigarettes don't smoke in one day on the 22 and 30 30 cigarettes artisan have you ever tried to stop yes that I'm stopped I was thought but two weeks I've gave up stores more stores oh no oh my god come on cigarettes okay I don't feel so good it's a urinal it's scheanette okay she took Yemenite ik [Music] so see austere Cara Nyanko you know not follow dr. enthusiast and self professed nazca fan and he's invited us on for a segment on national radio to talk about our experiences it's a fantastic twist of fate after a week of sprained necks and absent
