Myst Explained | Part Two | The Stranger of Myst

once said all that i know about my life it seems i have learned in books i suppose the same could be said for me albeit in a context far from one's understanding even as i am still in my youth i have learned more than most men have in a lifetime so it is with great relief that i commit these words to paper in the hopes that others can learn the same the start of my journey is surrounded in a haze i cannot remember the exact details and events which led to that moment all i can see in my memory is that book it was a normal looking book although its appearance was old and faded i opened it unsuspecting and was shocked when i saw a picture but it was far from any ordinary picture as this one was moving [Music] in it i saw an island surrounded by water as far as the eye could see i was amazed at what i saw large cogs rose from a platform a ship lays sunken next to a dock a clock tower stood off to the side close to shore i was in awe by what i was experiencing and without thinking i touched the moving pain darkness surrounded me and swallowed me whole the world spun and disappeared around me i felt sick to my stomach and i fell to my knees before i knew what happened i found myself on the dock the very picture i had been looking at a place i will come to call [Music] missed hello and welcome everyone to part two of mist explained if you have not watched the previous video i encourage you to do that first as the story will pick up right after the events in the book of atreus of course in this video we will be discussing spoilers so fair warning there also for the sake of being complete i will be using real mist masterpiece edition for reference as it is the most canon with that let us turn the page and get started in mist you play as the stranger a strange looking book has fallen in front of you and upon opening it you view another world through the moving image on the page curiosity takes advantage of you as you touch the image immediately pulling you in and dropping you for the first time on the island of mist with no understanding of what happened or any conceivable way of return you are left to explore the small island as you walk around you come across a note left on the ground a note left for catherine from atris detailing a secret message and instructions on how to access it when viewed we learn that not all is as it seems the message tells us what has happened i have to live quickly something terrible happened it's hard for me to believe most of my books have been destroyed catherine is one of our sons i suspect agony but i shouldn't reach the conclusion because i'll find him and cirrus as well oh i should have known better than i've left my library unchecked for so long well i've removed the remaining undamaged books from the library and placed them in their places of protection you shouldn't have to use the books until i return but if you've forgotten the access keys remember the towel temptation oh and don't worry cathy and everything will be fine i'll see you shortly oh and erase this message after you viewed it just to be safe it is here we begin our investigation to piece together the events that took place and to determine who is guilty of this heinous act unfortunately our suspects are also our only witnesses and the central focus of the story the brothers cyrus and achenar we meet them for the first time in the library trapped in the red and blue books also known as spire and haven next to each of these books is a corresponding colored page which when added to the books bring life back to its dead link a haze of heavy static hinders any meaningful communication but in the brief moments of clarity the brothers plead that we bring them more pages of the corresponding color before the link goes dark once more just a side note in the original game the trap books were thought to be just void ages where the person trapped was stuck in an endless black later when other games come out we learned that the books were actually ages and the void the brothers were stuck in was somewhat of a limbo due to the editing atrous had done to the books because of that editing the ages still existed and the linking panels would appear to be normal however when someone went to link there it would instead deposit them in an inner age void thus trapping them i want to thank some reddit users for helping me understand this those users are exile riven lime warrior adenis luigi han mousey magic blind gallon thank you for helping me understand and find this explanation anyways back to the brothers procuring the missing pages as well as understanding the scope of what happened and the timeline of events begins as you explore the remaining ages that atres has hidden around the island there are five ages that remain unscathed celentic mechanical stoneship channel wood and rhyme these journals give addresses account of the age and provide more lore to the history of them i might have another video come out later for an in-depth look at each of them let me know if that interests you but for now i'm only going to talk about channelwood since it directly relates to the story of how the brothers learned of ages to help understand how the fall of the brothers may have started we need to understand channel woods history before atres ever linked to channel wood the age was much different than what we see now it consisted of a large island with tall trees two groups of humanoids lived together one on the surface below the trees and the other high above in the canopies both groups were aware of the other however they had little to no contact even though the age was stable it suffered from frequent tremors and on one day the tremors grew to such a level that the island started to sink into the surrounding waters the humanoids who lived on the island knew what had to be done and sacrificed themselves in order to save the collapse it is unknown how they did this there were very few survivors and since there was nowhere else to go they moved to the canopies with the tree dwellers the tree dwellers saw these humans as gods due to their sacrifice and worship them as such it is some time later when aegis first links the channel would when the tree dwellers first encounter him they fall to their knees and worship him they bring him back to the treetop village and introduce them to their leader sitting with the leader is the last survivor of the humans to atrous surprise the human speaks the same language as him aegis realizes that the human is treated as a god and his worship much like he was which makes him very uneasy the next day the old human tells atris the history of channel wood and says that they had expected aetrus would have come a lot sooner as if it were some prophecy upon finishing his tales the old human stands and blesses the tree dwellers he then turns around and throws himself off the platform falling to his death after the tree dwellers retrieved the body they set up a funeral pyre during the ceremony as they were burning the body the waters below begin to change color to dull green since that time the waters have not changed back atria spent the next three months in channel wood while there he spent a lot of time learning the native's language atris eventually left channel wood and later came back with cirrus and agunar who were still very young the boys spent time learning of the age and were able to pick up the tree dweller's language very quickly at some point atrous had to leave and cirrus insisted on letting them both stay atress reluctantly agreed and warned the boys not to take advantage of the hospitality the tree dwellers gave over the next three days the boys along with the natives built a boat and explored the surrounding waters agers eventually returned and per catherine's suggestion the boys returned to their own age this plays a very important role in their development as we can speculate that cirrus felt god-like power and superiority with the inhabitants of channel wood and so begins the fall with aganar his brother following in his footsteps alright it's time to fast forward a bit and get back to mist and where we actually met cirrus and agnar if you couldn't tell by your first interactions with them they are complete opposites cirrus is very regal well kept and articulate where on the other hand agonar is more primitive prone to outbursts and insane as you gain access to each of the remaining ages we can see the brothers personalities at work you see each of the ages contains bedrooms for the brothers as they were prone to living there for periods of time well three of the five ages have bedrooms celentic does it and i speculate it's because it wasn't inhabited so the brothers had no care to stay there rime did have a bedroom but it appears to be aetrace's bedroom due to all of his writings left there there are also no inhabitants on rhyme so again i don't think the brothers had reason to stay there since they have lived in the three ages for some time each brother has accrued articles and items that reflect who they are for cirrus we can confirm his regal appetite and see much more things like modern plumbing posh furniture electricity and other luxuries in the channel would age fine fabrics coins and silver and ornate maps in the stone stoneship age finally we see a throne fit for a king beautiful tapestries and paintings depicting cirrus as a monarch in the mechanical age as well as a secret room containing gold bars treasure chests and a note from akhenar talking about sirius's greed on the opposite side of the coin no pun intended we have akinar exploring his bedrooms shows us his cruel nature and insanity we find the common theme of death in each of his rooms things like a sacrificial altar and channel wood that displays a projection with aganar chanting in a ritualistic manner a lamp made of what appears to be a human spine and rib cage and stoneship along with a small holograph projector that shows a beautiful rose that changes into a skull when the slider is moved lastly we see the true horror of what aganar is about in the mechanical age with his hidden torture room containing an electric cage various poisons and a box with what appears to be the severed head of someone or something in each of the ages except rime you find the additional pages that each brother begs you to retrieve as you continue to add more pages to the red and blue books the once static link between you and your brother of choice becomes much clearer in their plead for release both brothers accuse the other of murdering their father as well as the potential of harming you if released once all the pages are added from the remaining ages the brothers tell you of one final page the final page needed to release them from their prison they tell you it is behind the fireplace and only accessible with a special code but be careful as there is another book there which if you open it you will become trapped like them as it stands no matter which brother you follow if you deliver the final page you end up swapping places with them and become trapped yourself come to find out both brothers are guilty of burning the books and destroying the other ages the only true good ending is to open the green book in the fireplace doing so will reveal that aetrus was not murdered instead he was trapped by his sons and unable to return as they have removed a single page from his book to prevent him from linking back he doesn't know where it is however if you explored enough of the ages you will know how to find it i will pick this back up later but for now i think we should talk about the timeline of events that led us here in order to know what happened we have to go back just a bit both cirrus and agonard spent time with their father exploring the ages he had created aedras was very proud of his sons and their education eventually he wanted to teach them the art he went as far as creating lesson ages for them and employed a man named savedro from the age of narayan to teach the boys about interdependence and how by their society's labor and care towards the lattice tree brought balance to his age more on that in another video according to the information available it was agonar who started to stray first over time he started to feel pressed by their father and while they were staying in the mechanical age working on small projects without atress akanar decided to ignore his father's warning and sailed away with cirrus in a stolen boat from the fortress atres had warned the boys about leaving the safety of the fortress to go even further into the lore the fortress you see in the mechanical age was built by atreus and the few inhabitants of the age who were survivors of the attack of the black ships a pirate armada that ravaged the people of that age so the brothers leave the safety of the fortress and sail towards the black ship territory of course in doing so they were captured by the black ships and brought before the ebony cardinal who was the spiritual leader of the armada the ebony cardinal was interested that the captives were sons of his enemy atreus and seeing an opportunity akanar made a proposition in exchange for safe passage through black ship territory the brothers would give him a means to extend his dominance seeing warriors within the brothers the cardinal not only agreed but offered them to join the black ships the brothers kept their end of the bargain and provided the armada with technology that was unknown to the age things like steam driven harpoons forging of steel and the creation of new weapons with these the ebony cardinal consecrated the bond of initiation and accepted them as his sons after several days he then allowed them to leave during the days aboard the black ships akana had thought that if the brothers could come to possess their father's books they could trap atrs forever and then lead the black ships to other ages becoming their masters in time as well as gaining untold wealth and power over everywhere they went so they devised a plan and set it in motion and it started with narayan it had been about five years since the brothers had been to narayan they came with a promise to fix an orion with the art which they didn't actually know so that the inhabitants would no longer have to tend the lattice tree to balance the age with this promise the brothers were able to destabilize the age and a civil war broke out the brothers plundered the age in the chaos and then left it to die we will dive deeper into what happened when we talk about mist 3 exile since atreus was buried in his work he was too busy to see what his sons were doing behind his back cirrus and agona once done with an orion then set their sights on other ages that atrius had created plundering and pillaging to their heart's content channel wood mechanical and stoneship all saw the godlike tyrannical duel's wrath they continued their destruction and actually destroyed the books in the library of mist this could have been done to help with their plans or it could have been just to cover up their crimes who knows eventually the brothers decided to rid themselves of their parents they convinced catherine their mother that atreus had gone back to riven in where genn was still in exile atris had forbid anyone to link to riven she believes their lies and links to riven through kavir since that is where the riven book is stored when atres came around they told him that catherine was waiting for him in caveir i speculate that they told him this to make it more believable since atreus would not believe that catherine went to riven against his instruction it also could have been to make aegis question if genn was behind the destruction of his books leading his suspicion away from the brothers anyways atres leaves a note and message in case his suspicion about catherine not going to caveir were true cirrus and agonard knew that their father would take a linking book with so that he could return to miss after investigating before setting the plan in motion of course they removed a single page from his return linking book thus trapping aedras and kavir with no way back to his library on mist of course atres thought his return book on mist was hidden so he had no reason to even suspect that it had been tampered with the next part i owe a lot of thanks to user colby re from reddit the series of events are unclear of how the brothers became trapped and the pages for the books became scattered but kobe re's understanding really fits the missing pieces into place he says they cirrus and agonar had found the hidden missed linking book atres kept on the isle of mist for return trips they stole a page from it then burnt their father's library except for a handful of ages they spared it's possible they thought their father wouldn't suspect them and likely blame genn again had previously been trapped on riven but atres had always feared his return and cirrus and agonard used that fear to manipulate aetrus the thing is atreus was smarter than his sons gave him credit for when he arrived on mist to use the kavir linking book hidden in the fireplace he found his library destroyed and suspected his sons right away well at least one of them if not both he took some of the ages he had been working on and tore out several pages making them so broken that the person entering them would be trapped he knew his sons would be intrigued with these new worlds and left them displayed in the library knowing their greed would overshadow any sense of caution before leaving for kavir to search for catherine atress gathered the remaining ages they had not destroyed and placed them in the places of protection around mist as he placed the surviving books in the places of protection he hid the pages torn from the trap books amongst the worlds before going to kavir he recorded a message for catherine explaining the situation because at this point he even doubted if she was actually on cave of course when the brothers saw the new books and saw the ages within they linked their thus becoming trapped which is how we find them again at the beginning of the game that was a lot of backstory just to get to the final ending of the first game in the series once you recover the page that atres is missing from his linking book you then link to kavir adrius is very grateful for this and must now make a very tough decision he links back to mist for a few minutes before returning to kavir and says it is done he thanks you again for your work and as a reward he gives you full access to his library back on mist aegis mentions that he is unable to leave his writings and even a short break could have led a catastrophic impact on the world in which catherine is being held hostage but we will have to talk about that in the next video lastly he mentions that he is fighting a greater foe than his sons could ever be and that he may require your help in the near future until then you are free to explore mist when you return to the library you see that both of the trap books have been destroyed only scorch marks remain atreus has left one last journal in the library before he returned to kavir it allows you to access the final age of rhyme where atr's had been experimenting with a viewer to observe ages [Music] remotely [Music] it's here i must pause and gather my thoughts looking back the trials i endured on a small island and the ages i visited were absolutely dwarfed in comparison by what was to come not knowing what my future held i rested excited to see what wonders and places awaited me with the mere turn of a page i hope you have enjoyed the story explanation it has taken me months to compile and countless hours of research to better understand it myself from here i plan
