i just got back yesterday from the rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony in cleveland hello cleveland and on my way back i had an uber driver this was a girl late 20s or so and she was listening to some 90s hip-hop she had her iphone up there and i said can i ask you a question she said yeah i said you ever hear of dave broll she said no i said how about foo fighters he's like no did you ever hear paul mccartney nope the beatles no what about ll cool j oh absolutely i love ella cool j i said what about jay-z of course and i said um how do you listen to music do you spotify or apple music she said i use apple music that's what i'm listening to right now i said well you're listening to 90s why is it do you not like current music or is this just something you happen to be listening to she says you know i don't like a lot of the contemporary music because i don't like the lyrics i feel like everything is just made for tick-tock and i was like what do you mean she said well it's just all it's just beats for people to dance to to make tac videos too and she said i really like lyrics to me that's the most important thing i'm thinking to myself you know here i am going to this rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony these people have to be out for 25 years just to be considered to be inducted and there's people out there that don't know who any of these people are i mean there's plenty of people that don't know ll cool j and jay-z but if you think about it when i was a kid late 60s early 70s you know in 1971 50 years ago 50 years ago there's been 50 years of music since then i was 9 years old stuff i was listening to i mean there's really a limited amount of music to check out rock and roll had only been invented in the 50s you had that you had jazz i mean you had blues and then you had classical music that had been around but since then we've had 50 more years worth of music for people to listen to to check out and it's become this mountain of things that of unknowable things right there's a great veritasium youtube video where he talks about all you see is the tip of the tip of the tip of the tip of the tip of the iceberg right and that's all through recommendations just things getting recommended to you well that's pretty much how you hear about anything whether it's the dj from your local radio station in the past when i was growing up or mtv when i was in college people watch mtv and they learn about new groups that way but most music now is unknowable you've got these phones that you can carry around that you have access to just about anything recorded on earth right at the tip of your fingers that you can play and it's not just music from the united states or england this is stuff from all over the world right think about what's the biggest show out there right now squid games this korean tv show doesn't even have to be in the language the same language when i did my viral video thing you know the world's the top viral videos in the world when i whenever i did it last month a lot of things were not in english of course right they're in all different languages so it got me thinking here's paul mccartney on stage he's been around since the early 60s making music he's one of the beatles [Applause] and you think oh everybody knows the beatles when i was a kid everybody knew the beatles but nowadays like people don't know the beatles plenty of people don't know the beatles never heard of them you know i was talking to a friend of mine the other day about this exact topic like what happens in the future are there going to be any other rock bands to induct in the rock and roll hall of fame what happens if it's just there just aren't any bands that really qualify for this or they're not even famous long enough and one of the things that i really believe is that because there are definitive recordings of groups now jay-z american gangster right if you want to listen to that you just put it on or the beatles abbey road just play that there's a definitive recording of it there are definitive recordings of carol king tapestry right i'm thinking about the people that that were at the rock and roll hall of famer the color in the shape by the foo fighters definitive recordings the one recording of it that exists back 300 years ago when bach was writing music well there was no definitive recording because they had an invented recording all we had was box thoughts written down on paper and people perform them and interpret them themselves you know glenn gould was a great interpreter of bach on the piano there are classical musicians that specialize in certain composers music right you're a chopin specialist you're a box specialist you're a coffee have specialist well maybe in 100 years you're gonna be a person that is a specialist in the beatles or the rolling stones and you may specialize oh this person specializes in rubber soul his band and rubber soul and revolver they're you know you do exact recreations of these things you dress up it's like beatle mania or something right or you you are an expert in jay-z's catalog or an ll cool j or maybe a few different artists and and you just go out and perform those things or maybe people are going to write completely different kind of music using new instruments that we can't even comprehend but i i don't think that's going to happen one of the reasons why i do my top 10 spotify countdowns is to stay in touch with music that's happening today and i also do my what makes this song great videos and talk about music theory and ear training and things like that so that musicians can build their skill sets that'll help them create music in the future so love to know your thoughts leave them in the comments tell me what you envision the future of music being will any of these groups that just got inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame even be relevant in 30 years and 50 years and 100 years or in 10 years
