[Music] hi there my name is alyssa and this is a story about when my life got turned upside down it all started when our neighbor and my mother's best friend betty stopped by our house one morning she had a brainstorm of an idea she had convinced my mum that they should do a neighbourhood spring cleaning sale and so my mum thought this was an awesome idea and decided to do some spring cleaning she asked me to help her with this project and told me she wanted to completely clear out the entire barn in our back property however i wanted no part of anything that had the word work involved we had a small argument about it and i told her that i already have plans to stay at my friend tiffany's this weekend to complete a summer project for back to school she was very upset with me i could tell by the way she stomped her foot and huffed at me and said whatever i thought to myself phew quick thinking summer school project what a joke it didn't matter to me i was off to tiffs for the weekend when the weekend was over and i returned home it was really strange as i pulled into the driveway our barn looked strange to me it stood out more than i remembered then as i walked closer i realized i could see the other side of the backyard through the windows and that the sun was completely shining through now i can't imagine how many truckloads or who she bribed to help her with this ludicrous idea that betty got her into but our gigantic barn that's just about the size of most people's small houses was now empty i went inside the house saw my mum having coffee with betty i said hi mum good morning how was your weekend how did your sale go she replied it was amazing i made over a few thousand dollars i asked her how on earth did you get everything out of the barn who went through all the stuff she said oh that was easy since we didn't have any help we told everyone that it was a blind barn auction so everyone bid on a box without seeing inside as we auctioned off the boxes when they won a box they took it really easy that's why they call it a blind auction so i said wow that's insane but hey glad you made out like a bandit mum well as it turns out my mother's blind auction turned out to be my biggest nightmare when school started that september my friend tiffany came running out of the front doors at me trying to stop me from going into the school as i entered i was never so humiliated in all my life someone had bought one of the boxes my mum auctioned and all of my bald childhood baby pics were posted all over the hallways i guess the joke was sure on me for not helping my mother that weekend [Music] hi everyone my name is jane it might be a hard thing to believe but i'm 34 and i have never once made a cake for every birthday or party i have ever thrown i would always purchase a cake from a store or ask if someone else would like to make it i could never tell the difference between a home-baked cake and a cake bought from the store it was not until i heard of this wonderful fluffy strawberry cake with whipped cream that i realized a problem stores only sell specific kinds of cakes none of them with fresh fruit if they ever did sell cake with fruit the fruit would always look about a week old and it smelled atrocious i wanted to try this cake so badly but there were no stores that sold what i was looking for that was the moment i decided that i would have to make it myself it sounds like an easy enough feat if you have ever baked before but i have not i could bake batches of burnt cookies but have never gotten them to the gooey perfection that i've always craved however i would not let this daunt me to the task i've chosen i set about purchasing the necessary products before starting the practice run of course the practice run turned out exactly how you would expect it to if it is being made by a novice baker who only ever burns cookies i almost went out to buy the products again but at that moment the screen in my computer lit up with an ad an ad for baking lessons i couldn't help myself from laughing out loud it seems so obvious now if i was ever going to be able to make this cake the way i wanted i would need professional help with that in mind i signed up for classes it was an eight-week program meeting twice a week and i was loving it i always loved the idea of baking in an adorable apron and getting flour everywhere baking with these other men and women was the highlight of every week the amount of baking accidents went from every single student in the 10 student class making a mistake every week to nearly everyone making perfect cakes brownies and cookies i can now bake my cookies to a golden gooey perfection as well as make a deliciously fluffy cake from scratch i remained friends with everyone from the class and invited them to a party where i would present to my friends and family my first cake they happily obliged and invited me to several parties of their own in which i happily obliged as well on the day of the party i was absolutely ecstatic i had purchased all of the ingredients needed choosing the freshest of strawberries and only the best of the other various ingredients with plenty of time until everyone got there i set off i was greasing pans whipping eggs and dicing strawberries with professional skill i set the cake in the oven and started the timer as i began working on the frosting my stomach growled as i continued creating what will soon be known as my masterpiece i popped a strawberry into my mouth and hummed lightly as i took the cake out and began frosting it and placing the strawberries on top i slipped the finished product into the fridge as i greeted my guests and when everyone arrived i announced for them all to be seated once they all settled down i produced my cake with a flourish there were gasps and claps as everyone celebrated with me although i was not very young this was my first cake ever and i got to share it with the people i loved i suspicious so i placed my ear to the door hearing a quiet voice i pressed my ear closer i hear my brother say yes i got all you asked for master my eyes widened but i kept listening i hear another deeper voice praise my brother calling him my pet i was going to keep listening until i heard my brother moan hearing that i quickly stood up and bolted i ran back to my room when i got a text from my brother he's asking me to pick him up two cucumbers and a bunch of bananas i know he hates bananas so i text back if he was sure his reply came several minutes after he saw it it simply said yes understanding what exactly these are going to be used for i do not respond and rush to the store anything to get me out of the house if they are doing freaky stuff driving to the store i blasted music in attempt to stop thinking about what i'm getting this for i browsed several aisles to pass time before getting around to actually buying what he requested picking two lengthy cucumbers and a bunch of ripe bananas i checked out and headed home before going back inside i asked him if i should just leave them on the counter within a minute he was calling me i answered and the deep voice that i had heard earlier was speaking asking if i could bring it into his room and telling me that my brother wanted to tell me thanks in person i stuttered out a response before hanging up standing outside his door i shifted from foot to foot what the heck am i doing my brother is doing some freaky stuff in there what am i going to see i'm not mentally prepared for this i knock on the door but don't enter until i hear an invitation slowly opening the door i walk in with the food requested i blink in shock when i see my brother sitting next to an older looking boy a tea party is set up in front of them with graham crackers whipped cream and lemonade to drink a tea party i question my brother and his friend grin innocently in response and thank me for the food how did you like this story let us know child so cruelly as opposed to the other one even my sister knows she's their beloved she uses it to pin them against me as well if we ever were playing together in the house and she broke something she would blame it on me my parents never once believed me over her it hurt to know that even though i was innocent i would suffer the consequences of getting paddled with a wooden spoon or even been carrying for so long it's about me and my younger sister anna anna was born when i was four years old she was really cute and for me she was a new mate to play with i loved her tickled her and played with her all the time as soon as i got home after school i would sit with anna and tell her story after story about my entire day everything was good back then as anna grew up though we all started noticing abnormalities in anna yes during my mom's pregnancy the gynecologist had informed my parents that anna would be different and not like other babies my mom was against abortion and so she decided to deliver anna on anna's third birthday we were all busy with the party preparations i was blowing balloons and my father was putting them up on the walls my mom was looking after anna when my granny arrived mom got so excited when she saw granny that in her rush to greet her she ran down the stairs forgetting she was carrying anna then mom slipped on the staircase and fell badly on the floor mom and anna were both injured and immediately admitted to the hospital my dad was a wreck and granny tried to console him i just prayed to god to make the situation better we all waited for the doctor outside the emergency room he eventually came out and said that my mom and anna was safe but that anna's abnormality put her in danger the doctor informed my parents that they had to be very careful on how they raised anna any further injury could result in her death or falling into a coma her senses and nerves had become weaker from then on everyone in the house was preoccupied with looking after anna my parents had no time to talk to me even though somehow i got space from them anna never kept quiet i felt that everyone was forgetting me there was a time when only one voice was heard chloe chloe chloe chloe but now it was anna anna anna anna anna she was the cherry of their cupcake now before i got what i wanted without question but now my wishes had become an unnecessary demand and burden all my friends had three wheel bikes they used to ride to the park whenever i visited the park with granny they teased me because i always came on foot walking my granny was not financially stable so my useless ones were difficult for her to fulfill so i asked my parents for a three-wheel bike but as usual the answer was a big fat no i got upset i stopped eating food i stopped talking to everyone seeing me so upset my mom and dad felt bad and decided to buy a three-wheel bike for me the following month but my bad luck persisted and anna went through mental trauma she was not behaving normally just kept on shaking and banging her head and so she was admitted to the hospital again and this time she was there for a fortnight and my dad got a huge bill as a result buying a three-wheel bike was not important anymore days passed by and then it was my 10th birthday and my parents refused any kind of party i remembered my fifth birthday i had wanted to celebrate it with family and friends at home and my parents actually organized it anna was just a year old when my fifth birthday was celebrated my birthday party was full of entertainment and acts it was a magic show dancing juggling even a comedy show and that's not all because it was my fifth birthday i received five gifts each from mom dad and granny what an amazing birthday it was but after anna's third birthday tragedy no celebration ever took place at home and now even my 10th birthday would be an ordinary day i wanted my 10th birthday to be celebrated in a grand way but my parents refused i was very sad i cried i shouted i started throwing tantrums but as usual my parents were more interested in their younger daughter and they just scolded me i had always resented anna for stealing the happiness i had with my parents but that day i actually hated her on the day of my birthday unexpectedly my parents didn't buy me a cake nor did they give me a present they didn't even wish me i was red with anger and just left home without informing anyone and surprisingly my parents didn't bother calling me nor did anyone wait for me or shouted me for coming home at such a late hour i planned to move out for further studies i went to oxford leaving everyone behind my parents often called me sometimes i called them back but we never met on my 18th birthday i saw my parents standing outside my university i was happy to see them but my happiness turned into sadness when i saw anna with them my so-called sister who was 12 years old they wished me and asked me to come home with them but i couldn't make up my mind then anna came and she insisted a lot although i hated her i don't know why i eventually agreed and went back home with them all the way i was silent i had no words to say no that's not it i just didn't want to say anything finally we reached home and as i came out of the car i saw granny granny welcomed me wish me happy birthday and we all went inside together as i entered i saw the house had been nicely decorated and there were people there including some of my school friends i was clueless and trying to figure out what was happening and then i heard a loud chorus happy birthday oh yes that was a grand birthday party thrown and all organized by my younger sister anna when i left home and went to oxford anna always asked about me when she was 11 years old granny told her the whole story though anna was not normal and used to behave as a kid much younger than her actual age she understood that i left home because of her and because the grand party i had wanted so badly was never thrown so with the help of granny she planned and organized a grand party to get me back i feel like such a stupid girl for never trying to understand my parents problems and for not realizing that my sister needs me i was so selfish and i truly regret it i apologize to my parents and now we all live happily together and i don't hate my sister anymore i just love her and
