Nice to see actually useful makeup tutorials. I always think of my lip shape as resembling a flying saucer because of this.

Love this technique by Lisa! This is a problem I didn't even know I had, I assumed my mouth just looks that way when wearing more vibrant lipsticks. Bonus: it's a truly Mulan moment when she uses the brush to apply lipstick πŸ₯°

Her techniques are so subtle but makes such huge differences. I feel like this is what instagram makeup wants to do but just overdoes everything and ends up looking tad clownish.

Thanks for sharing! I have shied away from bold lip colors because of my downturned mouth. Can’t wait to try this!

I dig! Will have to remember for whenever a non-boyfriend human sees my mouth again lol. Even though I do my makeup pretty regularly I haven’t worn lipstick in 9 months. 😭

hi everyone today i'm going to do a tutorial addressing an issue that i think quite a lot of people have i've had so many lip related questions recently and this one does come up time and time again and that is that i've been asked i'd like to wear strong lip colors or i'd like to wear lipstick but i feel like my lips naturally go down when i wear lipstick it really emphasizes the shape of the downturned lip so obviously if we're feeling very happy and we put our lipstick on and it makes us look like we look sad that's not great so i'm going to show you different ways that you can address that and make it go away so a naturally downturned mouth can be something which is just genetically that's the way your mouth is or it can be obviously a sign of gravity or gravity taking its toll which can start to pull your mouth down a little bit i'm going to show you on me i have i'll show you what i've got not a massively down turn mouth but i do have the potential if i was to paint my lips in a certain way to have a very downturned mouth because it's hard to say this and keep talking but when i relax my lips you'll see um at the edges where the lip sort of finishes i then have some lines almost it's it's the sides of my mouth actually go quite down although the lips start a little bit further in if that makes sense so here you can see the line finishes sort of here i'm going to do this quite like over the top to start with so that's where my sort of the lines where the where my mouth sort of finishes so if i was to go all the way along the top lip and the bottom lip to that point i would end up with a very downturned mouth so i'm just going to show you if i was to do that what it would look like if i was to respect the natural edges of my lip okay we're just gonna clean that up okay so the bottom of the of my mouth is sort of there if i was to go all the way there along i'm not over drawing obviously i know you know i usually overdraw my lips but so that's taking the lip line to the genuine corners the real edge of my lips another thing that can do it i'm going to fill this in then you'll see the shape another thing that can really emphasize that is if you go very full on the outer corners of your top lip almost like that 1940 shape you know this sort of bet davis where they used to really over draw those edges which can make the lip very heavy so if i was to also starting at the genuine corners if i was to go more of a round shape you know it's not that far off my natural lip shape it's only a small movement but you can start to see when i fill this in i'm just going to fill it in with pencil just so you can see the shape actually right into those corners and then just finishing off painting those outer corners so that's me tracing exactly the shape of my genuine lip my lower lip so the shape of my mouth from corner to corner on the lower lip and going a little bit heavier at the outer corners of my top lip and you can see these two things combined when i stop talking result in more of a downturn mouth so i think as well if you've got more of a pronounce naturally downturned mouth doing both or one of these things really doesn't help so i'm going to take this off now and then show how i can address both of those things so how to not look sad wearing lipstick and these tips apply even if you don't have a downtown mouth because you can actually give yourself a downturn mouth just with lipstick so here's how to avoid that so what i'm gonna do is where my lip naturally goes all the way to there which is the downturn bit at the end i'm going to use concealer i'm going to kind of cut off those edges so kind of make them out of bounds so it means that my lips going to come up and it's going to finish before that crease there's a crease of this shape at the end of my lip there so i'm cancelling that out and do this a bit brighter this concealer than i would choose normally just so it shows up so i'm going to draw a line in fact just for the purpose of communication so we're going to cut off those corners both sides so that's this bit we're going to take out of bounds now i'm going to put lipstick on just following my natural lip line to start with but i'm also going to really be careful when i'm changing the shape in the way that i like to to give my lips the look that i like i'm not going to over draw the top of the outer edge of the lipstick so starting with my lower lip i am going to come inside but i'm going to be on the inside i'm not going to follow the edge of the lip so i'm sort of cheating those corners so i'm not involving them i'll blend all this concealer later i just want to kind of show you what i'm trying to over emphasize almost one i am going to do some over drawing on my lower lip as normal but i'm just going to start by following my natural lip line apart from those corners and then on the top i'm going to start on the inside here so all the way to the edge of the lip so we are still doing the edge of the lips but we're not good on the outside of that do so i'm going to look in the mirror now straight on already i can see i went slightly too far this side into the inner corner i'm just slimming that down a touch so what we've got now is that my i haven't done my shape yet but we've got my lower lip filled in with lipstick but it's finishing before my down turn things there my creases i'm going to blend this concealer in then i'm going to do my shape so i can still over draw my mouth and i can still do all the things that i like to do but i'm just being very mindful of those corners so on my lower lip now as i like to do i'm going to smile and i'm going to over draw in the center this is one of the reasons why when i'm doing a very strong mouth a red mouth a dark black currant mouth whatever whether it's on clients or on myself i always put the lipstick on first just a thin layer all over that way i can stand back look at the shape of the lips and think actually i want to make this tweak or that tweak or when i see the the natural lip shape painted in i'm very much more aware of any imbalances so i'm able to kind of step back and then create from scratch so i'm not going any more into the corner and then for top lip again i'm not going right into that lower corner and then coming up immediately i'm sort of scooping up so it's a little bit more smiley a little bit more friendly still over drawing but so that's my shape done so you can see the inner corners of my mouth now i've just got concealer or nothing else in here and there's the downturn crease which we haven't entertained so lipstick i'm just going to put on some blush as well i'm going to use my lipstick someone's asking me also about this using it yes you can use it as blush sometimes i like to use it with a tiny bit of liquid highlighter so i put a little bit of liquid highlighter on the brush which also had the remnants of a little tiny bit of foundation as well and i'm going to use that just to blend onto my cheeks just because sometimes with darker colors red it's nice to have a matching blush reds etc so i didn't finish my sentence so that's the finished look it's they're quite simple steps that can help you either if you don't naturally have a down term mouth avoid creating that or if you do naturally have quite a downturn mouth just almost cutting off the corners on the lower lip and not going really heavy from the out the top corners in so not creating that that extra weight and that extra heaviness the lip just those two simple things can really help as an added touch since i've got my lip color in a great place nice shape just gonna add some gloss once again though i'm not going to take it into the inner corner because especially with gloss it can seep and you can end up emphasizing those downturn corners and we don't want to do that so i hope that was helpful and i'll see you soon bye
