[Music] high school was a hard time for me i used to lie awake at night stressing over deadlines walk through the halls of school like a zombie and stuff myself with junk food because i didn't feel like cooking or getting actual food the day after i graduated high school i packed my bags bought a plane ticket and left to travel for a few weeks a few weeks turned into a year because i fell in love with traveling and photography so i dreaded coming back home to the life i found so bleak when i finally came back life turned out to be way less bleak than i remembered oh and remember to hit to go see my mom i hadn't seen her in person in a year so i was hyped to see her again and have a home-cooked meal i arrived at my childhood home soon enough as i rang the doorbell i felt like i wasn't myself i felt like a stranger coming to deliver a package or something it didn't feel like home anymore the door swung open but behind it was a man my age instead of my mom it was my best friend josh i smiled instantly and we hugged i missed you bro why did you have to leave for so long josh said giving me a slap on the back you should have come man there's a whole world out there i said looking around for my mom i figured my mom had told josh i'd be coming for dinner so he came to see me my mom walked down the stairs and immediately jumped to my neck with a hug she's a small energetic woman she pinched my cheeks the way she knows i hate and asked about my trip hardly letting me get a word in though she seemed a bit nervous to me she was more talkative than usual and her eyes kept darting from me to josh andre darling are you hungry i'm willing to bet you've only been eating junk for the past year she said as she filled a large bowl with chicken alfredo she placed my bowl at my usual seat at the table and hers right across from mine where she always sat my favorite josh said to my mom when she got to his bowl which she had placed at the head of the table which i found odd that was where my dad sat so the seat had been empty since they got divorced josh gave her a smile i've never seen on his face before it felt like he was flirting with her but i dismissed that idea he's my best friend why would he be flirting with my mom after dinner my mom made us move to the back patio and she poured us some drinks josh and i talked lively about everything i saw the month i spent in greece while mom simply nodded and listened she was seated across from me and josh was next to her while i was telling them about the time i stepped on a sea urchin she tapped josh on the shoulder and gave him a very slight knot josh put his hand on my mom's thigh which made me stop talking out of confusion i looked at him angrily to let him know i didn't like him touching my mother like that but he only pressed his lips together and said andre we have something we need to tell you my mind raced i thought about all the possibilities of his next words as an overthinker i hated when people said stuff like that that and can we talk was one of my least favorite sentences andre my mom began hesitation clearly marking her face josh and i are married and so my mind went blank i sat in silence for about three minutes thinking of nothing but thinking of everything my mind raced and then stopped abruptly my eyes darted back and forth from josh to my mom concern on their faces and then i laughed i started laughing hysterically i laughed and slapped my chest trying to get some air into my lungs you guys really tricked me for a second i continued laughing when i finally stopped i looked down and saw josh's hand still on my mom's thigh i looked closer at his hand and noticed a wedding ring a matching ring was on my mom's hand you guys got rings and all for a prank i chuckled but they didn't laugh the awkwardness of the moment which i assumed was part of the prank drove me to change the topic and tell them about how i got lost in the german countryside i visited my mom often even when i started college but josh was always there i was impressed at the work they put into their prank but i was getting annoyed i was sick of seeing my friend's smiling face whenever i rang my mom's doorbell i was sick of bringing a cake or a pie to my mom's and seeing my friend stuffing himself with it part of me wanted to shout at him and flip his plate onto his shirt but i always wanted to remain calm so they knew that pranking me wouldn't get a reaction out of me one day i got so sick of josh that i decided to go to my mom's unannounced so that he wouldn't know he had to go pretend to be my stepdad by that time i had my key to the house back so i simply opened the door and walked in i heard something coming from the kitchen so i walked over there but i heard a man's voice it was josh i peeked around the corner at them and what i saw made my blood boil my mom was chopping vegetables and josh was hugging her from behind which was weird my best friend was kissing my mom i stalked into the kitchen grabbed josh by the back of his shirt and punched him right in the jaw he stumbled backwards and my mom shrieked i walked out of the house as calmly as i could but when i looked around i noticed the walls were covered with pictures of josh and my mom i ran out of that house as fast as i could my phone ringing made me jolt awake in the middle of the night not again i thought i looked at it lighting up my room with its blue light and my former best friend's face was right there on my screen it had been two weeks since i punched him and ran out of my mom's house but he made it feel like it was just yesterday as his incessant pestering kept my anger alive he showed up on campus almost every day trying to talk to me but he couldn't understand that seeing him sad outside my lecture hall wouldn't make me forgive him the guy i had seen flirt with countless girls was suddenly married to my mother was i overreacting no there's no way i had to turn my phone off most of the day because otherwise the sound of buzzing or ringing would get me kicked out of class as it had done already after what felt like months of avoiding josh having him follow me around ringing my doorbell enough to have my roommates throw buckets of water onto him and rendering my phone useless as he always found new ways of spamming me i decided that it was time to drive down to my moms again everything seemed the way it was last time i was there but there was a slight difference josh was wearing my dad's old clothes when my dad left he left about half his wardrobe in his old closet and josh found it he seemed like he had aged 20 years at least in clothes and personality can you believe he had the nerve to ask me a grown man a few months older than him to play catch in the backyard and then when i refused he wanted to send me to my room my mom had to stand between us because i was already squaring up to him how could you marry this clown have you lost your mind i questioned my mother to which josh intervened saying don't you talk to your mother that way after that day i knew i had to do something i didn't care about my relationship with josh anymore he could bag all he wanted for my forgiveness but i simply couldn't get over the fact that he married my mother my relationship with my mother however was something i wanted to salvage but i couldn't go back to the way things were with josh buzzing around like a pesky mosquito i could only really think of one way to get my mom and josh to separate while brainstorming ways to get josh and my mom to break up i remembered the one girl josh said he would never lose feelings for i dropped my friend sandra off at a restaurant i asked her you sure you're okay with this to which she replied of course josh did you dirty and a bit of extra cash never hurt anyone and winked at me she sauntered into the restaurant giving me one last look and walked over to the booth where josh was sitting impatiently when he saw her his face lit up and he engulfed her in a hug he lifted sandra off the ground and spun her around like they were at the final scene of a fairy tale i watched from my parked car my face covered by the shade of a baseball cap as sandra shamelessly flirted with josh josh had basically had a crush on sandra since kindergarten so he obviously didn't mind her finally flirting back it didn't take long for him to lunge forward and interrupt her with a kiss i snapped as many pictures as my phone storage would allow me to and got out of my car josh looked up when the little bell over the door rang announcing my entrance and his face just dropped i slid sandra 50 bucks took her hand and led her out of the restaurant as soon as i had hard copies of the pictures which i needed for gravitas and dramatic effect i raced towards my mom's house i bolted out of my car and in through the door only to be greeted by none other than josh give me those he said trying to swipe the pictures out of my hands but i swerved him and went looking for my mom whom i found reading a book on the back patio after showing my mom the pictures i felt kind of bad she was tearing up i had never seen my mom sad before she said how could you slightly under her breath while still looking down at the photographs she looked up from them towards me and repeated how could you she threw the pictures at my chest and started screaming at me like i'd never heard anyone scream before she looked furious but at me not at josh who actually deserved it how could you do this to my husband you tricked him she shouted at me get out of my house andre now she threw the book she was reading at my head so i ran out of there i drove out of the driveway quickly and parked again a few streets away i was in shock had my mom just chosen her cheating husband over me her own son was she really so delusional sitting in my car i realized i had basically just lost my mom i had nowhere to go except his place across town in a quiet neighborhood i parked my car in front of a condo i had to admit my fingers trembled a little as i climbed up the stairs and went to ring that doorbell that i had never wanted to ring but i reached out and pressed it until i heard the typical ding dong andre what are you doing here son my dad said when he opened the door i explained everything that had happened with my mom and josh after my rant dad said man i knew that woman was nuts he then opened the door wider and suddenly we were in each other's lives again
