of Cassius Clay the most beautiful fighter in the world today what should people tell their kids who Muhammad Ali was he was a tremendous Muhammad Ali struck us in the middle of America's darkest night in the heart of its most threatening Gathering Storm ladies and gentlemen mrs. Cassius Marcellus clay he's young he's handsome they know it he's apart and many people believe he'll be the next heavyweight champion of the world he was leaning back and away from punches matches play guy remembers the greatest fighter that ever lived in an out of the Ring when I'm Trustin it would be the toughest fighter that clay has been in with so far the nature of sin they're a fantastic combination of power and beauty and he combined that of velocity with the power of a heavy wood worid into the canvas again by a barrage of punches he predicted the round that he would knock somebody out he was the first available sugar spot he was funny he was beautiful he was the most perfect athlete you ever saw and those were his own work he saw the publicity had brought and what did the publicity equal a larger and larger presence on the American stage I watched him here in the gym a few months ago to certify how Hakeem and he can hit again the elbows and just about breakers on Liston was virtually invincible just a trip not a fighter blister was a great fighter I seen him knock out a guy's teeth but not it's the truth no baloney hit him so hard he dislodged the mouthpiece in the deep but with the mouth he had this very forbidding germinating utterly Hospital manner about it he was so powerful I was a god when he debuted the same as punching somebody I had no dreaming ID that he could win that fight I didn't give him a chance in hell I'm young I'm handsome I'm fat I'm pretty and can't possibly be beat it was a 22 year old by the name of Cassius Clay listed almost the first time he hits him could be one perhaps two I'll take one I look for listing the win in three rounds I like Justin and about one two three rounds he was perfect for television he was The provocateur which is what the TV wanted as we got near to the fight blue collar showed up not Lex Ali's interface with the counterculture and the beginnings of his huge political present if he were made to realize how black people really feel and how fed up we are without compromising as if he hadn't put enough pressure on himself Cash's play decided to announce that morning he had joined the Black Muslim religious an unpopular militant group 50 sales started dropping some husband's a Muslim they were thinking of possibly canceling the fight that was a polarizing one with it Cassius Marcellus clay was going to be Muhammad Ali and we've never seen anything like that you know how great am I don't have to tell you about my status I feel that my trainer pay Bodine and come here Bodine it Kevin what are we gonna do you don't throw like a butterfly and sting like a bee rumble young man Rumble by the tanley Liston way in big place in agreement with boxing people that we should get serious morning February 25th the day of the big fight now we'll say the craziest way at an all black thing happens you wanna make something that Sony's bad enough from his nightmare and I agreed to that all the way up and then he hit the door would have to be afraid of a crazy man it was all part of young plays master plan classes were small and he was clever and he he could get on the list and skin more so than anybody ever [Applause] be the world champ the world seems to be pretty like me well he told me to bet my life that you wouldn't go three-run well if you want to lose your money in battle and funny somebody who was whistling past the graveyard somebody who had been scared he was trying to you know keep his courage up before he was destroyed I felt that Sonny Liston was going in and squashed this boastful Bradley kid Oh world heavyweight boxing title I'm just anticipation my father thinking that our league was going to get killed literally by studying listen because that is what people thought but you know drama around this fight was whether this hysterical manchild was gonna lose his nerve whether he was gonna show up and whether he was better good kid by appropriate the greatest of all time greatest athlete ambassador human being of all time McCallum Gareth gaving played like a butterfly sting like a bee look at the videos or there's documentaries there's movies and it's hard to sum him up because you could do documentaries on different parts of his life [Applause] [Music] so I get him down I get the sponge and I pour the water into his eyes trying to cleanse whatever is there before I did that put my pinkie in his eye and I put it into my eye he burned my hair there was something caustic in both eyes Joe Pollino had used monsell solution on that cut and my kid sweating profusely went into both eyes what that was facing biggest fight of his life that he's blind he can't see Jared I divide they're bothering him ladies and gentlemen we don't know exactly what happens from cadiz plays corners nothing got in his right eye not lead 199 pounds was just not a full body heavyweight at that point will study a Liston was probably Sunday whispered for the horrible liquor Donald in that round the lesser die would have folks but then it was I started clear he started doing enough for a listen together leaf add good long left lane the six round will list the one back to this corner listener was a beating man what do you think is going on in Sonny's mind at this point well I think that baby on our back deck play have all the company lead they're born to beat the defeat how funny is clay she's peripheral vision sharp he's looking open I shall be looking out my shop to the Inca we win 1964 he became heavyweight champion of the world upsetting Sonny Liston the 71 favourite electrified and there he was right in front of me and a whole bunch of other newspaper men pointing down to us like this I told you I told you I told you exactly what I was gonna do nope nobody even the big sports writers had listened gotten by the powers that be never would have allowed Cassius Clay to fight again all of the odds were against him he upset the oddsmakers he won nothing in Cassius Clay's pass prepared him to become Muhammad Ali not my name no more that basically Muhammad Arlena cohannet I leave right Muhammad Ali my name white America won't stand for it which they did black people in many parts of this country weren't allowed to drink from the same water fountains as white people to eat in the same restaurant Cassius is in a better position than anyone else to restore of racial pride not only our people in this country but all over the world how do you feel about Malcolm I feel that it will touch up a why here in New York City between black Muslims and all I am I am the head of the world prostitution he was going to take Muhammad Ali's title away boys Muhammad Ali did not think like they wanted everything retiring does not belong to the type of Hollow the title belongs to the World Boxing Association a rematch with Liston despit before November of 1964 in Boston [Music] heavyweight title the big fight the big night here we go no that caches wants to stay out in the center of the weimar that happens to be the King Mohammed flu I don't know maybe for punches at post knocked out by a bunch he didn't see Mohammed was floating around and what happened he made an angle on a guy listen it's throwing a jab his head went down didn't see the punch you got it right on it down does your club I'm not Cassius you still calling me I can or Mohammad you're talking it I'm nothing anyhow to talk about you want to keep calling me a white man's name I'm not white I don't wanna be called up to your name no more I'm not no slave I'm Muhammad Ali [Music] when we think about the legacy of Muhammad Ali what he did in the ring is not what we think about because he was doing Gandhi outside of the ring and he could knock out anybody in the world that I could hold court and the poorest of the poor right up to the White House when he walked in he lit up the room I mean he literally moved faster and lighter on his feet than most welterweights damn who is fast yeah look at this but the movement the side-to-side it was like there's no heavyweights had ever moved like that no like in 67 he was [Applause] couple of guys got this thing about trying to get him steamed up calling them Cassius Clay no Cassius Clay is clay when Howard Cosell and everybody is calling me Mom and I'll leave then why you got to beat one of all people whose colors to keep saying Cassius Clay why don't you call me my name man well what's your name you told me your name was Cassius Clay yes I told you my name was Cassius Clay my name is Muhammad Ali and you did announce it right there in the center that right after the fight if you don't do it now so ladies and gentlemen as the two contestants prepare for battle right now who's the one that he's doing it what's my name what's my name you all know exactly who I am say my name that ad Humiliator and he was screaming at him what's my name what's my I say my name the director Selective Service is going to establish tonight a random selection she clinched the draft lottery a live report on tonight's picking of the birth dates for the draft it was the first lottery used to order men into military service since 1942 as you have just seen the heavyweight champion of the world is rejected induction into the military service more everybody was against it wrong wrong 1965-1966 95 percent were in favor of that ward nobody criticized the US if you were opposed to the war in Vietnam they thought you were patriotic and college Lee Brown Dodgers than half of all african-americans oppose the war in Vietnam blacks were disproportionately dying in Vietnam what about your unpatriotic remarks that you made you said you were the people's champion yes sir do you think that you're acting like a people's champion yes sir you don't have to pound a minute those who couple of miles and those who take a stance and when you take a span you have to be ready to pay for no matter what you think mr. Muhammad Ali's religion certainly have to admire his power Ali had the strength to speak in a time you could be silenced dr. Martin Luther King has been shot to death in Memphis Tennessee who was that a relate to when Vietnam exploded in our face that was a flash what really I mean everything that Holly had done before was asked nothing compared with his refusal to be inducted and Lee it didn't seem so Craven to be afraid to go into the army and fight the war for the draft for war that we didn't believe in all of us huddled on the conveyor belt feeding the war machine [Music] it took an all-white jury less than a half hour to find Muhammad Ali guilty of all charges this fella they call Kaleo Muhammad Ali whatever he want to call himself he's a disgrace that in a fighting imprisonment for his stand Ali was also stripped of his title the mightiest in the world had receded and the man who became Muhammad Ali had transcended live out the true meaning they were the police jury and execution and you want me to go somewhere and fight but you want you to stand up for me how he wanted whether or not he would ever fight again and it was this title was stripped from him he was a pariah in America's ban was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court ollie here today of the Supreme Court exonerated for refusing military induction this was Ali's return to the ring after a three and a half year exile time he was out would have been great that would have been a watching a master at work because he had reached his fill proportions full maturity the world never got to see the best of Ali what you got was plenty but you didn't see the best of the crowd screaming the first knockdown there was fighting [Music] so you didn't spend those three years lifting weights and running hills and hitting the heavy bag he wasn't doing anything to undefeated champions two champions of the first rank an alley coming back to reclaim in many people's minds what was rightly hit but not against some Patsy against Joe Fuji [Applause] and white robe here comes Joe Frazier Joe Frazier will be here we have two undefeated Fraser is one all 26 of us boat with 23 knockouts and Muhammad Ali has won all 31 of his bouts with 25 knockouts the young Muhammad Ali would have run circles around John Frazier look at Ali go I mean he doesn't look anything like he used today and he's is bouncing around a little bit in the beginning but he's just not the same guy how he didn't have his feet that would question but you learned they could stand and fight [Music] [Applause] I don't know how he survived that round Joe just relentlessly keeps going he has more stamina and power than anybody I think I've ever seen don't you watch each hurry up I'm as important here you felt like the world wanted him to stay down to lose many wanted to watch this liberal black draft-dodger get his ass kicked he wouldn't give him the comfortable stand down simply because he knew that that's what they wanted and to every elder statesman in the black community that I've ever known every one of them remember that story [Applause] the question on everyone's mind was whether Ally could ever be the fighter he once was and when I do come back if I ever do I'll have a more of a hunger determination which is something you lose an intoxication of so-called greatness it has got Chiron ollie and I heard all a prank rustic 7-point snorting fire [Applause] [Music] he has a broken jaw he is a beaten man and he is a broken fighter and so all of the millions of dollars that loom before him with a foreman match or a brazier rematch are suddenly gone what was once a very great fighter becomes now part of fistic history and all probability [Music] George Foreman had annihilated everyone there step in the ring with me I had beaten everybody that Mohammad Ali had lost faith calendar for the heavyweight title big George Foreman the undefeated heavyweight so I thought I was a toughest thing ever invented and George was a big strong young impervious to pain heavyweight if he puts you you know if he puts you six feet deep ultimately George Foreman didn't have a problem of that he was that vicious one punch of mine was was equal to 20 of any other hip whatever he's got Joe Frazier would drop Muhammad Ali's the most menacing heavyweight of all time it would be George Foreman out gonna be the best heavyweight that ever existed he is with Ken Norton and the reason for that of course is that he doesn't like George Foreman one bit do you really believe I'll leave that here man yeah the man went 24 hours early broke my jaw the first mile I was in shape cycle plant in those days he was a bully the people around him were afraid of him Foreman had really brutalized the people who trained him and they were terrified of him he gave me as fast as I'm as awkward as I am I couldn't walk in on I had beaten the best in Joe Frazier no doubt about it I had beaten the best people had something to say about that I said you know what I'm gonna kill one of these fellow then they'll shut up performance was a guy who destroyed Frazer destroyed Kenny noise whipped by Kenny not not not kidding on out easily once again Muhammad Ali found himself in great demand the WBC and the WBA mandated the fight the public certainly wanted it and the media clamored for it I think George Foreman will knock Muhammad Ali out little in Muhammad Ali's career the boxes were scared handlers were scared the only person that didn't appear scared of Foreman was Ali everybody was scared but Muhammad Ali himself [Applause] have you fought many guys who were talking they're ringing no enough [ __ ] talking with time you didn't know it fell in Volvo as for the fight itself discussion centered not on who would win but on how much punishment Foreman would dish out time may have come to say goodbye to Muhammad Ali George Foreman is about to make his way through the ring because very honestly I don't think he can beat George Foreman Cosell was convinced that all these washed-up [Applause] this guy is the closest thing to a human monster I ever seen before he was certainly the scariest boxer look at this now as they stare Muhammad Ali beginning to talk to George Foreman they're really putting a stare on each other I looked him in the eye to stare down at this Oh George you in school when I was beating in the past four years beyond two rounds in any fight the one weakness in this monster was thought of as unbeatable was his stamina the first round all of us yelled ah get off to work and he would just say shut up an autumn day he told me got into the guys head and he didn't even realize it it was when I was fertile mind created the rope was going second or third when he went to the ropes he was both just like a few initial bombs just lay on the rope and take a whipping this time he did it with character they say I've got a weapon install the role for dose was something was invented by Muhammad Ali that night shows you the power of intellect and intelligence and how that can compete against anything maybe I was a big powerful giant in the ring with more tablet I mean the knockout so young so strong so fearless I had him beat I really did and we did thought I had him beat up in the body head I'm tired continues to talking against George Foreman he does away with his opponents one after another in less than three minutes George not going that type of this was a long time you just treading water you know missing the shots that he missed it drained imam ali he was man lana love disliked Archie said grabbing him and he emptied the guy's tank I was afraid he was going to get killed by a George Foreman that many of our young viewers don't know perfect timing [Applause] I thought he was hurt I thought his body was hurt he came back you know the guy really was the People's Choice and he was the People's Choice because he loved I hate to predict in any fight with mindfulness those people who said Foreman would win in a flash I've certainly been proved wrong then about this someone's around he asked me that all you got George that was like a night after a while even the dumbest of us looked up they said you know what [Applause] [Applause] [Music] was in fact the greatest heavyweight who ever lived I he loved people and he loved the adulation of the crowd all of us but it's gonna be a nice easy fight well he comes out dances around the heat them but they've but I'm in Nice 2007 a lot of people say chill Frazier always wash stuff no we got something for you you have you better believe it is most described as the world's most famous man and indeed is difficult to think of even a contender you know there's been a lot of speculation about your conditioner there was a suggestion for instance that there was brain now I mean you know yourself cause in here a couple times would have never been knocked out this time never gathered strange ring oh he must have got well I mean I saw you just find Joe crazy he was the greatest because he was a fighter in every system Muhammad Ali was not worshipped he was actually vilified he was a rebel with a cause his Parkinson's others due to repeated blows on his head repeating the ball in his head and you've seen what can happen to fighters you've seen those shambling reps that go around you see them at every boxing occasion and what people are frightened always they don't want that to happen to you times he landed very bad punches on how he was about he was gone to the grades okay going at it nearly killed each other between rounds before the pimp I heard Ali say something to you that I never heard him say before what was that man he said this is the closest that I've ever been to dying really and I said well now I got to separate the men from the boys courage that he had in the ring to take life-threatening punishment as we saw him take from Joe Frazier in Manila most dominant athletes in the history of sports comes up and look to Frasier gonna be over they took a beating from Frasor they took a beating from each other oh those were horrendous fights those are horrendous and then I want to retire is the too painful there's too much work might have a heart attack of something I want to get up as well I'm on top there's no explaining why a guy comes back they knew it's tough tough take away the glamour do your lord to light we'll have won back the heavyweight championship years old with Muhammad Ali retirement was a dirty word Muhammad Ali now in the ring awaiting the arrival of Larry Houghton's he was really suffering from Parkinson's already yeah I was already kicked in evidence and speech problems it was a finality never should have taken he was a shell of himself as a box at that particular moment in time and it actually broke Larry Holmes heart like halo moving heavy bang momily story is a triumphant story cuz cuz he did triumph and he didn't change his own life and change the lives of so many other things it was kind of a skinny like kid the first fight I put him in anyway 289 pounds impossible is just a big word thrown around by a small man who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the world they have to change he was somebody that had principles he stole a truck ulah ulah mean it's good I'm their ally forced us to take a look at ourselves this brash young man who thrilled us angered us confused and challenged us ultimately became a silent messenger was one of the most influential people of the 20th century athletes in the history of and he whispered in my ear you made my life better than a lie and the greatest but didn't he make all of our lives a little bit better than they were [Music]
