like the battery reasons that you get up in the morning and you want to live like why do you want to live what what's the point what what inspires you what what do you love about the future and if we're not out there if the future is not include being out there among the stars and being a multi-planet species I find out that it's incredibly depressing if that's not the future that we're gonna have look at the future from a standpoint of the probabilities it's like it's like a branching stream of probabilities and there are actions that we can take that affect those probabilities becoming a multipath species in space prank civilization this is not inevitable it's very important to appreciate this is not inevitable [Music] if you look at the at the progress and space in 1969 we were able to send somebody to the moon [Music] [Music] 1969 [Music] then we had this the space shuttle the space shuttle could only take people to low-earth orbit then Space Shuttle retired and the United States could take no one to opens so that's the trend the trend is like down to nothing [Music] I mistaken what when they think that technology just automatically improves it does not automatically improve that it only improves if a lot of people work very hard to make it better by itself degrade actually you look at great civilizations like ancient Egypt and they're able to make the permits and they forgot how to do that and in the Romans they build these incredible aqueducts they forgot how to do it [Music] I think I think that the value of beauty and inspiration is very much underrated no question but I want to be clear I like I'm not trying to be anyone's Savior that is not the the I just try to think about the future and not be sad Rock verify range go range green first stage tank pressing up a wealth a well-thought-out critique of whatever you're doing is as valuable as gold that third failure in a row did you think I need to pack this in though why not I don't ever give up I mean I'd have to be dead or living faster eight weeks later must bet the company on another flight this time around everything worked perfect that poor force hadn't worked that would have been it we would have not had the resources to not successful entrepreneurs probably come in all sizes shapes flavors some of the things that describe already in my heart are very important I think really an obsessive nature with respect to the quality of China we're really really liking what you do what whatever area that you get into given that you're even if you do the best the best the joys of Trance available so I think it's important that you really like whatever you do you don't like it Blackman's before when my brother and I were starting our first company instead of getting an apartment we just rented a small autistic and we slept on the couch we had just one in computer so the website was up during the day and I was coding it back seven days a week all the time you just keep going put ninety billion dollars by fifty years worth it breaks into into solar and wind into something Solyndra and Fisker and Tesla enter one we had a friend who say don't just pick the winners and losers you pick the losers unavailable 24/7 herself to help solve issues like hold me three a min of Sunday morning I care but his bets we didn't just repay the principal we actually prepaid it with interest and anniversary and so ultimately the US taxpayer actually made a profit over to pump over twenty million dollars on this work like how I mean you just have to put in you know eighty hour and you don't hurt our weeks every week if other people are putting in forty hour work weeks and you're putting in 100 hour work weeks you will achieve in four months what it takes them a year to achieve it natural human tendency is wishful thinking so a challenge for entrepreneurs is to say well what's the difference between really believing in new ideals and sticking sticking to them versus pursuing some unrealistic dream that doesn't actually have merit your product or service needs to be much better can't be a little bit better though all those things improve the odds of success I think might might sort of drive to get a done is somewhat disconnected from hope enthusiasm or anything else I just I actually just don't care about hope or enthusiasm motivation I just give it give it everything I've got irrespective of what the circumstances may be [Music] it's been 15 years to get to this point taking us a long time a lot a lot of difficult steps along the way creating a company is almost like having a child so it's sort of like how do you say your child should not have food even if it ruins you yeah I remember waking up the Sunday before Christmas on in 2008 and thinking myself and I never thought I'd someone who could ever be capable as a nervous breakdown and but I felt this was the closest I've ever covered so many people try to talk me out of starting her art company it was it was crazy one good friend of mine collected a whole series of videos of rockets blowing up and maybe watch those you just didn't want me to lose all my money and in the end I had to invest everything and as I was borrowing money from friends to pay the rent [Music] what we'd like to do is to establish a city of Mars and and help make humanity of multi-planet species and a true spacefaring civilization that's the ultimate goal I'm not saying we will do it I'm just saying we're gonna try you had that third failure in a row did you think I need to pack this in ever I don't ever give up NASA called and told us that we'd won a one and a half billion dollar contract if you need inspiring words don't do it I think wishful thinking is a mate in the human brain having civilization and life as we know it extend beyond Earth to the rest of the solar system and ultimately to other star systems but that's that's the future that's exciting and inspiring any kind of any things like that to make intuitive to be glad to wake up in the morning we're doing these things that seem unlikely to succeed and if we've been fortunate and at least as far they have succeeded that life can't be just about solving problems like they have a few things that are inspiring and exciting that make you glad to be alive ultimately be out there among the stars that's actually been a very difficult journey I have to say here's a path to do it even if that path has a lot of danger associated with at risk and maybe it won't succeed why it's important and even if the odds are that it wouldn't succeed it's worth trying to do it I just incredibly proud of the SpaceX team for able to achieve this incredible milestone in the history of space [Music] the SpaceX has got five five thousand people and I get a lot of attention but it's their really did the work so awesome team [Music] 20 seconds and counting t-minus 15 seconds guidance is internal 12 11 10 9 ignition [Music] I think we're at the dawn of a new era and it spits I think it's gonna be very exciting what we're hoping to do with SpaceX is to push the envelope and provide a reason for people to be excited and aspire to be human you can manage through three launches but they they failed and I actually only have the money for the three launches but we managed to that was the original client the world after three if we haven't succeeded will you know maybe that defense would be that that's it we managed to scramble and put together the parts for one one final launch and it worked every now and again most graphic company wins and I think this will be one of those times [Music] three two one zero engine running liftoff we have a liftoff 32 minutes past the hour liftoff on Apollo 11 I think it's important that humanity become a multi-planet species I think most people would agree that a future where we're a spacefaring civilization is inspiring and exciting compared with one where we have forever confined to earth until some potential extinction event yeah that that's really why I started SpaceX what I'm planning to do is to make a significant difference in in spaceflight end and and help make space life accessible to to almost anyone [Music] when something is important enough you do it even though flogs not in your favor you know there are American heroes who don't like this idea I was brace that to see that because those guys are yeah you know but those guys are heroes of mine so it's really tough no I wish they would come and visit and and see the hardware that we're doing here and I think that would change their mind the rules today incent people to create carbon and that this is madness and whatever you incent will happen it's very important that we take action today to recognize that we are making a very significant change to the chemical constituency of the atmosphere and the oceans and one that is almost impossible to reverse you know when we look back on on these days in the future we want to be able to say that we we did the actions that were were right look and don't worry about what other countries are doing just do the right thing
