from the beginning of League's Inception back in 2009 all the way up to the present day players have consistently tried to uncover the most effective tactics available to win games however with almost 15 years of constant changes and new additions shaking things up these are some of the worst most frustrating metas that the game has ever experienced starting in no particular order with season 3's Infamous League of Cleavers now since the game's early stages all the way up until the modern day Black Cleaver has served as a staple item for many ad Champions particularly amongst the Juggernaut or Bruiser class for providing a solid booster to a range of important stats which these Champions thrive on and though there have been various iterations of the item over the years during 2013's first version of the item there was a higher emphasis on Armor shred as its stats looked like this for the cost of 3,000 gold Champions would receive 250 HP 50 ad 10% CDR and 15 armor penetration with a passive that for each attack on an enemy Champion would shred an additional 7.5% of armor up to four times capping out at a solid 30% additional armor shred if you manage to fully stack it so while this doesn't seem too absurdly broken at first there was one crucial oversight that was made that would eventually forever change the way that items were designed later on you see for a notable portion of the game's history Champions could buy as many of the same item as they wanted leading to funny builds or in cases like this season 3 meta devastatingly high damage as this meant that black Cleaver's variety of stats could be purchased over and over again however this lack of item diversity was the even the biggest problem with this stacking strategy as during this time no one had thought to make item passives unique and apply only once like they do now meaning that if you had four more Cleavers well this build was broken with the full build of five Cleavers and Boots players would have 75 armor penetration as well as an additional 40% CDR 250 ad and 1250 HP but instead of needing four attacks to get the additional 30% armor penetration players would just need to land one since each Cleaver granted one of these four stacks on their own so I really don't think I need to explain how strong this would make Champions such as old Pantheon or old Talon who could deal some absurd damage once they had just a few Cleaver to their name and though this definitely won't be the last we see of the Juggernaut class running through their competition in this list for a moment let's take a look at their frequent Top Lane counterparts in tank Champions and how their source of dominance was once so powerful that even turned some of the game's most iconic burst assassins into Top Lane bruisers now unsurprisingly tank metas have long been deemed unpopular by League's larger player base due to said time periods resulting in less exciting fights and longer game times both of which being expected results in cases where teams favor durability over damage and while these types of Champions will always of course find some value in most team compositions due to their utility or capacity to soak damage during seasons 5 through 7 tanks Rose from being just another class in the game to the optimal way to play league thanks largely in part to some crucial systems changes whether it was grasp of the undying being added for tank combat damage cinderhulk providing high value health for tank junglers or these components combined with the strong spike in damage that was iceborn Gauntlet plus Sunfire Cape tanks on top of already serving his durable fortresses for their teams now had actual damage to go alongside them damage that was in fact so good that Champions such as Ekko Fizz old theol and Italy even had viable build paths to use these items as instead of popping Champions as fast as they normally do they instead could trade some of this damage for the Boost in health which in some cases actually proved to be better than their intended regular build pads and unfortunately for those who found themselves on the wrong side of this Titanic wall of pain while nowadays options for anti-tank items are much more available at the time there weren't quite as many countermeasures though when poppies are Solo killing Fiora well it should have already been clear that something larger than just items was a Miss wow Hunter yeah I mean oh and he stops IT Das brutalizing hone right now again just shade stunning him dear Lord and though tank meta was significantly more prevent of an issue it's worth mentioning the also frustrating kleptomancy meta that took place throughout the course of season 8 which felt awful to play against for multiple reasons you see after the Rune reforged update heading into the season of 2018 which replaced the old system of runes and masteries with an overall revamp a new system of keystones and their respective Rune trees were introduced into the game with one of these crucial elements being the Rune kleptomancy which the way that it worked was after using an ability your next two on hit attacks would Grant five gold each if they hit a Champion or sometimes even drop a small consumable item instead if you were lucky so as you can probably imagine this Rune was great on Champions such as Ezreal who had easy to apply on hit effects which could also be used to farm gold whilst in some cases like Gangplank and kale they could also buy their time in Lane while prepping for their late game Power Spike and if this sounds like it was uninteractive and unfun for their opponents well then you would be correct as in addition to this on its release kleptomancy was insanely strong sometimes granting lucky players around 2,000 gold of value by around the 15minute mark not to mention the fact that these randomly spawning consumables could include Wards even more gold or in some cases a free level up which at the right time could be game-changing for an otherwise even laning phase and as a funny side note for a while there was a strategy using this Rune in combination with spell thieves to poke out your opponent while not farming yourself however when this was tried out in a professional LCS match it seemed that not everyone was aware that this new fangle tech was actually a thing so this is actually hilarious so the the reason we paused was bang thought there was a UI error because he saw no Farm on zillian that's the build bro that that's the pause but unsurprisingly with gold being one of the most significant stats in all of League it shouldn't come as surprise that this wouldn't be the only meta to try and find new ways to essentially print this valuable Resource as in the middle of season 8 we saw rise to the now Infamous gold funling meta as with jungle experience receiving a nice boost while other it item classes were lowered in their power it was quickly realized that by placing a carry with Smite in the mid lane along with a composition to help enable this Champion's power even further by letting said Champion Farm across the map including jungle camps this carry would become an Unstoppable Beast who could essentially bully their way into priority over things like Scuttle camps or any other point of pressure simply because they were just too far ahead hyper carries such as Master ye kaisa and Lucian were especially good as being the quote unquote jungler as they could be exceptionally deadly when a lead with ye's now Infamous combination with tar being one of the most frustrating to deal with as having a Fed ye blitzing your backline with tar Q while also being immune to damage is about as fun as you may have guessed plus with professional players of course picking up this strategy on their own games became incredibly boring to watch as this play style discouraged interaction leading to teams passively building a perspective carries while their teammates were kind of just there to support them yeah it's just so boring sometimes when you're just sitting on stage and you're just like shielding people and like King minions and I honestly don't know how support players can play supports however at long last supporting Champions would finally get their turn for dominance this time on the international stage as during world's 2017 we saw the rise of one of the most hated metas in professional history all revolving around the support item Ed sensor despite originally being added in the middle of season 4 in 2014 for a long while its initial role as a more situational item led to it being incredibly underutilized largely due to supports often just not having enough gold to spend outside of their core build that is until a combination of a couple of things happened firstly the system surrounding support items were updated to allow supports a chance to further develop their build paths with more usable income a byproduct of changes that made Ward usage both more affordable and more streamlined however this next change while initially fine would serve as the Catalyst for the chaos to come as the item was tweaked to be a more meaningful selection for on hit Champions adding on hit magic damage in exchange for lessen attack speed and later on getting an effect that would also increase the power of heals and shields but with the item still not getting the usage desired on patch 6.22 Not only was AR sensor made cheaper but now Champions would also receive healing equal to the bonus on hit damage that was done essentially meaning the item now had a draining element to it a component that was buffed to nearly double its Effectiveness a couple of patches later due to Redemption being nerfed and with ardan's healing not being reliant on the actual damage the attack dealt the item became quite strong especially on classic enchanter Champions like Jana Lulu and saraka in fact it was so strong that bot Lan essentially led to just both teams farming as fast as they could to get this Jack of all traits item before their opponents granting them a huge advantage in the early game and ultimately allowing them to take over the match and with his strategy not being nerfed appropriately in time for worlds well watching the entire game being determined by who can Farm an item faster in the bot Lane was about as entertaining to watch as you may expect though I will say this unexpectedly high damage Leona cheese that was pulled off by Misfits against SKT was a nice breather amongst all the ardan enchanters with her now legendary play surprising the reigning world champions with all in feror Leona well they try to get to the front already ignite goes down immediately no flash forward but the heel comes out they turn to Wolf as bang feels like he can get back into the fight just Han Sama one more shot as wolf wants the glitter lands barri got one on to B fight in the jungle still going down two kills in the bot Lane as Misfit pull the trigger now while world's 2017's meta was already pretty rough to watch just two years prior during worlds 2015 Riot arguably destroyed League's biggest Tournament of the year in one of the most chaotic patches in the game's history with a now Infamous Juggernaut update you see on version 5.16 just two patches before the official worlds patch Riot dropped some massive changes onto the game's playing field as in addition to the regular list of small adjust ments they added new items reworked already existing items and revamped four Champions which understandably led to chaos with scarner Rew work initially releasing at an unheard of 65% win rate Mor Kaiser becoming a bot laner who could now possess dragon and champions such as gankplank and Fiora now just being broken it was an incredibly rough time for essentially anyone who wasn't playing top lanane as these changes wreaked havoc on the rift terrorizing adcs and ruining Pro play as unsurprisingly these changes entirely flip the meta on its head from what team's been playing on all year forcing players to learn new Champions and new strategies all while playing on a patch that still had a lot of work to be done in terms of it being balanced with teams only having three bands each at the time and the PRI pick of Gras being disabled in the quarterfinals due to a bug nearly the same Champions were picker Bann in every single game leading to an incredibly stagnant meta in which it felt as if fans were watching the same game over and over again with these games of course being steamrolled by the Unstoppable juggernauts amazing can jump over the wall who's going to win this fight it goes to the red team that goes to origin here's the battle Cara alone in front absorbing get dunk soaz is online down he's still going he doesn't get the third as zus comes across he gets some damage on his thing he he's on it's to save the game so gets a pill after Baron and if you're looking to Rel live some more hype moments of League's past and enjoyed this video you should check out our coverage of five times that League's Pros shattered the skill ceiling this has
