thank you [Music] [Music] Ed Boon and his incredible team at Midway had done the unthinkable taking a quickly sinking franchise and rejuvenating it with a new look a new dimension and a new fighting system that was well received two years later Deadly Alliance was followed up by the sixth Mainline Mortal Kombat installment Mortal Kombat deception Mortal Kombat deception also known as Mortal Kombat mystification in France released in Autumn of 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox getting a port of the GameCube later in March of 2005 and finally a port to the PSP in Fall of 2006 under a different title Mortal Kombat Unchained deception is a direct sequel to Deadly Alliance with the game's intro cinematic picking up exactly where the previous game left off the Earth realm Defenders had been defeated by the combined might of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi the only Survivor Thunder God Raiden stands against the two foes alone and despite putting up a great epic fight he too is defeated but despite their Victory the malicious greed of the two villains begins to bubble and they turn on each other to fight over shinnok's amulet which allows them to control the dragon King's Invincible Army Quan Chi defeats Shang Tsung however just as he gains Victory the rightful owner of the army Returns the former ruler of the realm of outworld the Dragon King o Naga Quan Chi does a boss move and stands his ground against this Mighty opponent as he does Shang Tsung and Raiden rise to form a new alliance and in an epic Last Stand of Bravery Raiden creates a blast strong enough that not only destroys the other two Sorcerers and the surrounding Temple but also himself but his sacrifice was in vain as it did nothing to Onaga who now possesses The Amulet he needs to control all of the Realms the combined forces of the last game survivors joined to combat Onaga and his army whilst new main character shojinko undergoes the task to bring down the Dragon King himself with Mortal Kombat deception Ed Boone who was once again in the director's chair wanted the game to be like a box of surprises for the player wanting lots to discover that you couldn't have imagined there were more modes more secrets and more characters including the return of many MK3 favorites that hadn't seen a reappearance in quite some time the game runs in the same engine as the previous game and plays almost identically having the same 3D fighting system and three weapon Styles per each character this time fighting styles were altered to give them all an uppercut which Deadly Alliance only used sparingly no longer could weapons be plunged into your opponent and the debuff power-ups were also discarded in response to deadly alliances long uninterruptible combos deception introduced the combo breaker in which up to three times in a match you can interrupt your opponent's combo below and stop it the combo breakers are identified by the lightning bolts under your health bar each character also now went back to having two fatalities along with a new special finisher called a Hara Kiri this was a sepaku move in which if you lose you can kill yourself before your opponent performs their fatality robbing them of their Victory animation this created a race between players after the match was over to see who could input their finisher first and aspects that saw heavy development in deception were the fighting Arenas with them now being just as important as the battle happening between the two players all the stages were now interactive allowing you to knock your opponent into another area of the stage or even into a death trap which would instantly make you the Victor you could be fighting on a steadily collapsing Cliff having the dread of falling to your death below if you take a wrong step or fighting on top of a tower to which one of you could be booted off down to the floor below and then again to become red slime on the ground the Arenas suddenly became just as influential to the outcome of the battle as the fighting was itself and it's a joy to find all the Death traps in the Arenas to which you could take down your opponent these layered stage interactions was deception's evolution of stage fatalities and Mortal Kombat 3's stage transitions some stages also feature unique weapons that either player can equip and use very similar to Mortal Kombat 4. you'll also notice these new traffic lights underneath your health bar which has been added to the game's heads-up display these are fight State indicators that change depending whether you're attacking in a combo or near a stage death trap these were added to make it a little easier to anticipate certain dangers for modes deception is once again exploding with content even more so than Deadly Alliance you've got your traditional fighting game staple versus mode which could for the first time be played online this was a heavily marketed feature of deception as it was still very new for console fighting games to be online in 2004. online was developed for the PS2 and Xbox versions whilst the GameCube Port lacked the online functionality in the game arcade mode returns dropping again to test your mic mini game but going back to having a tower-like animation between matches the new sub boss is dual character Noob smoke and the final boss is the new villain oh Naga character endings were once again static images with narrated text like in Deadly Alliance however new character shojinko is the one who narrates each ending besides raidens the other big marketed mode of deception was the return of Conquest mode it was really built upon in deception no longer a simple string of tutorials instead taking on the guise of an open world action adventure game with six huge maps to explore fetch quest to complete and a narrative to enjoy that includes almost all of the characters relevant to the game you take control of new protagonist shojinko a young martial arts student under the training of master ball raicho the conquest mode takes place over the Hall of jejinko's Life starting decades before even the first Mortal Kombat game You'll Play Through shijinko's entire life watching him age and grow older as you progress within the mode shujinko is met by a floating orb called damashi when he is Young dimashi claims to be an emissary of the Elder gods and they have chosen to for an important quest to retrieve the kamidogu a powerful artifact from each of these six main Realms taking them to an observatory between the Realms called the Nexus you begin in Earth realm and travel to the nether realm chaos realm outworld Sado the realm of order and finally edenia collecting the kamidogu from each realm which will unlock the next one when you interact with characters you'll still have to complete tutorial challenges like the conquest mode from Deadly Alliance but the adventure gameplay between really relinquishes any fatigue or unsatisfaction you'd get from playing The Deadly Alliance version of Conquest there's a lot of secrets to find in this mode from unlocking chests that appear at certain times yeah you heard me right deception even includes a day and night cycle there's also cameos from other Mortal Kombat characters just even exploring the six Realms of the immortal combat universe is incredibly gratifying from the stern prowl pyramid structures in the order realm to the hellish scenery of the netherrealm to the purple Hues of outworld there's a lot to see and discover in what is more or less a secondary mode throughout Conquest you will have interacted with many Mainline MK characters and see that shujinko's Quest happened before and alongside the events of Mortal Kombat 1 through 5. many times where shujinko could have aided Earth realm in previous threats against Shao Khan Shinnok and The Deadly Alliance he had to be called Away by one thing or another usually damashi who kept him on his quest to retrieve the kamidogu eventually after years of serving damashi as shojinko the floating orb reveals himself to have been Onaga all along who has been resurrected thanks to reptiles imbecility in Deadly Alliance dimashi was merely an extension of onaga's Consciousness and had deceived shujinko his whole life to collect the six kamidogu now that he has all of the kamidogu Onaga only needs shinnok's amulet before he can complete his goals of controlling all of the Realms this is how the conquest mode ends and it leads straight into the opening of the game to which Onaga claims his prize the other returning modes include practice to test out each character's move sets the Crypt this time saw a lot less coffins than Deadly Alliance the only other difference is some coffins also now need a key to unlock them which can be found in the conquest mode so it gave even more incentive to explore the six Realms options again features lots of the game's elements to Tinker around with from difficulty levels match lengths blood levels and the ability to remap some of the game's controls to your own preferences for new mode deception had two really creative ones first there was chess combat which is a spin on the classic board game in this mode you choose which characters of the roster will be the leader which is essentially your king who will be the Champions the sorcerers the shifters and the grunts as like in regular chess the quantity and movement options of each class is different essentially it plays like a more arcade-like version of Chess your pieces have more movement options than regular chess and you don't just take over pieces that you'll land on instead you have to battle for the space on the board which will initiate a traditional Mortal Kombat match but it only have one round as all of your characters keep their single health bar the whole match you can only get extra Health by occupying one or both of the green squares on the board so your grunts have the least Health but you get a lot more of them so if it's a character you're really good with then you'll be a force to be reckoned with shifters become your opponent's character when they battle unless it's another shifter Sorcerers gets a list of spells they can cast once during the match which range from supporting spells like healing or teleporting a teammate to offensive spells like taking an enemy off the board or trapping an enemy so they can't move for so many turns Champions are the like the equivalent to a queen but the teams in chess combat get two of them and the first player to defeat their opponent's leader wins the match this really is a solid strategic game that it seriously blows my mind that no other Mortal Kombat game or other fighting game has brought this back in some way or another because it's a perfect blend of action and strategy that is very addictive the second new mode is puzzle combat it's a falling blocks puzzle game similar to capcom's super puzzle fighter two blocks of four different colors will fall from the top of your grid and you can turn them but you want to assemble them by their colors as when a Mortal Kombat logo falls down with a block you can use it to destroy some of the blocks of the same color as the logo if they are touching when you destroy blocks you also give your opponent the same amount as you took off the player whose grid fills up first loses chibi versions of your character's battle along the bottom of the screen and each character has a special move unique to them when your meter is full which adds some additional depth to the game selectable characters include Scorpion Sub-Zero Raiden Katana Molina Baraka Nightwolf sindel cabal Ermac bullright show and kenshi surprisingly no new deception character is playable in this mode depending on who wins they'll automatically perform a fatality on the loser and it's just another really cool mode to include let's now go to the deception roster there's 25 playable characters across arcade versus and chess combat with 27 in the GameCube version what I'm going to do when I talk about each character's fighting styles is list on screen if they were used by a different character in the previous game Deadly Alliance as some styles are actually recycled in deception this way we get to compare how the Styles have been shared throughout the 3D era of Mortal Kombat between different characters there are 17 returning characters they are scorpion who is back once more this time to Aid the Earth realm Warriors to destroy Onaga his styles are hapkido muy-fi and he wields the mugai Ryu the other side of the coin Grand Master Sub-Zero returns with his now iconic shredder look his styles are the same as he had in Deadly Alliance shorter dragon and the Corey blade Raiden is back now Reborn the enraged dark Raiden after sacrificing himself in the game's intro he has a darker attitude and finally his flying launch special move has also returned his styles again are the same as Deadly Alliance and he has Nam Chuan Jujitsu and he once again wields his staff Liu Kang is back but this time as a reanimated zombie who AIDS irmac in restoring the heroes killed by The Deadly Alliance in the previous game his styles are June fan power chill and he wields the nunchaku Molina comes back since MK gold she is aligned with the takatons her styles are Yin Yong Myan Chuan and she wields the sigh Baraka makes his return leading the tarkatan Army his styles are Salat hungar and for his weapon style he unsheaths his iconic blades very Epic queen of adenia sindel makes her return this time battling Onaga alongside Jade to free Princess Kitana her styles are jar Chuan fujao POI and cuando cabal comes back since MK Trilogy having been rescued and appointed the new leader of the reformed black dragon Clan his styles are sunbian goju Rio and he wields his classic Hawk swords Native American warrior night wolf is back since MK Trilogy to Aid the Earth realm Champions his styles are valtudo Taekwondo and he wields dual tomahawks Jade also makes her return since MK Trilogy and adenian loyal to Queen cindel Jade aims to see Tanya brought to justice for dooming adenia her styles are fansy Kyosho and bujutsu Ermac is back again since MK trilogy there is a lot of classic MK3 characters here A mysterious Warrior made up of many fused Souls he's got a great new mummified like design in the game he assists zombie Liu Kang to free the resurrected Earth realm Heroes have been captured by Onaga his styles are huachuan Choi Lee foot and he wields an ax here's an interesting one Noob smoke who is also the sub boss of this game this is basically a dual character combining the former Brotherhood of Shadow member Noob with the Cyber linkway ninja smoke Noob is revealed in this game to be classic Sub-Zero bihan from mythology Sub-Zero and the original Mortal Kombat and also current Sub-Zero's elder brother bihan was killed by scorpion in the original Mortal Kombat game all those years ago and this is his form when he came back to life Noob uses the monkey fighting style while smoke uses Mizu and there is no weapon Style with Noob smoke Tanya makes her return from MK4 she now serves Onaga her styles are ziram men your tran and kobu Jutsu ball raicho comes back from Deadly Alliance he is now leading adenia's Army alongside Lee may his styles are sumo which replaces his previous style of mijong he still has the drunken fist style and the Jujutsu Style Lee May comes back as well having been saved by ball right show and now AIDS him and the army of adenia to battle the takatan forces her styles are Liu hey Zhong and she now wields the conlon Dao with her side weapons in Daily Alliance gone back to their original owner Molina and lastly after much positive fan feedback kenshi also returns from Deadly Alliance the blind telekinetic swordsman who was rescued by Sub-Zero his styles are Tai Chi Judo and he's back with his katana now for the eight new playable characters introduced in deception my favorite new character is Havoc he is the cleric of chaos and aims to destroy Onaga so that Shao Khan can reclaim the outward throne and continuous chaotic rule which fuels havoc's realm he is able to crack snap and contort his body having really unique animations and attacks his styles are snake Tang Soo door and he is equipped with the Morning Star shojinko is an old martial arts master deceived by Onaga but was gifted a special ability to mimic other combatants Moves In The Conquest mode he actually doesn't feature a lot of his own moves which is unfortunate his styles are the Mantis form Shaolin Fist and he wields the Dan Tian Dal the whole taru is one of the many new characters created for the plotline concerning Sado the realm of order hotaru is Captain of the Satan Guardsman the Realms military and he serves Onaga in hopes of forcibly restoring order to all of the Realms he has a great Design coming with insect-like exoskeleton armor and decorative Flags his styles are ban Shan fun pigua and he wields the naganata there's ashra a demon from the nether realm that by using a magical blade to kill other demons she aims to purify her soul irmac and Noob are her top targets to kill to attain full purification her fighting styles are Cho Zhao bagua and she wields the magical Chris blade Darius is the leader of the resistance in the realm of Sado fighting back against hotaru and the oppressive regime in the realm his design is very much inspired by Wesley Snipes and legendary martial artist Jim Kelly darius's styles are shintorio the leopard form and he wields gauntlets dairo was once a member of the Satan Guardsman he left them to take up hired mercenary work Darius has since hired diro to assassinate his former subordinate hotaru dairu's styles are Wing Chun a screamer and he wields the Autumn Dow sword the final two new characters are created for cabal's newly reformed black dragon Clan Cobra and Kira are new recruits Cobra is a spin on the karate kid character Johnny Lawrence and his styles are sure in Ryu kickboxing and he wields Carly sticks Kira on the other hand is a mixture of Kano and Sonia's characters her styles are shinyi Kempo and she wields the Dragon Teeth blades the GameCube version includes two extra characters to supplement the absence of the online functionality they are the showcan prince Goro whose styles are show Khan kwatan and he wields the dragon fangs he is an epic character to play in this game and the second character is Shao Khan who returns after his defeat by The Deadly Alliance to help bring down Onaga and reclaim the outward Throne his styles are taizu Liu hey and he is equipped with the Wrath hammer now in the Canon ending of the game shujinko is victorious in defeating Onaga and bringing an end to the dragon King's deception just games interactive handled the port to the PSP under the new name of Mortal Kombat Unchained which released in Fall of 2006. Unchained on the PSP includes Goro and Shao Khan from the GameCube version along with four more characters ported over from Deadly Alliance bringing the roster to a total of 31 characters the extra characters included are Katana Jax Frost and Blaze with all four of them retaining the same fighting styles from Deadly Alliance they also have no harakiri moves and Katana Jackson Frost each only have their one fatality with blaze having neither these characters are just straight ports from Deadly Alliance Unchained also contains a new endurance mode which has you fight against a constant wave of opponents similar to a survival mode it also retained the online functionality by using the PSP's Wireless ad hoc network Mortal Kombat deception was another major hit for Midway and the Mortal Kombat franchise in just its first week alone deception shipped over 1 million units becoming not only the fastest selling Mortal Kombat game at the time but also the fastest selling game in midway's history it was gamespot's best fighting game of 2004 and won the fighting game of the year award at the eighth annual dice Awards praise was given to the interaction with the stages giving the combat a new layer of strategy the returning classic Mortal Kombat characters with great new designs and fighting styles the addition of Breakers was also complemented for adding a new angle to the combat and the conquest modes saw good feedback from players that enjoyed that it allowed them to explore the Mortal Kombat Realms interact with various characters find secrets and have an Avenue to consume a Mortal Kombat story outside of simple endings and character bios the Mortal Kombat franchise was at last back in a great spot it had completely turned its Destiny around with two very well received new entries where could you go from here exactly we've battled an alliance between two classic deadly foes and we've defeated the ancient dragon king but what we haven't done yet is held back the looming dread of Armageddon itself here I'm 36 24 36 and I'm a Scorpio got it
