the finish underworld of twanella clearly sparked the fancy of all you story seekers out there but as some of our friends from finland pointed out to me i may have missed a thing or two when it came to the uh crazy nature of the underworld and its melancholy characters for one we forgot to pay homage to the absolutely terrifying guard dog of tuanela that uh is the actual embodiment of violent and sudden death and we also forgot to pay homage to the maid of tony the fairy woman of the river of tuanella and you guys really really really wanted more on lauhee and lo the mother of the nine diseases and the hag of pogola so let's go back in to tuanella so you guys grab a seat grab a drink i've got another story for you [Music] so [Music] [Music] let us begin with the guard dog of tuanela the beast the demon who paroles the perimeter of the finnish underworld servant of kalmar goddess of the stench of corpses kalama meaning the smell of death and perhaps it is the guard dog's job to protect her from air fresheners or perhaps it is his job to keep her in check though in our version of the story here in the tavern surma the monstrous hound of tuanella is more like a long-term companion of kalma as it is one of the only creatures that can stand the smell of her as a matter of fact surma the word itself being akin to violent and sudden death it makes sense that he would in fact be friends with the goddess of the stench of corpses now surma himself is a terrifying envisionment this beast this hound is a high combination of cerberus and medusa with a snake-like tail and a thousand fangs a monstrous entity a hundred hands high an absolutely horrifying beast essentially if medusa cerberus and a manticore had all gotten together and had a much unwanted love child that is surma and he is both stout and resolute keeping the living out of the land of the dead when they don't belong there keeping the dead in the land of the dead even if they don't want to be there the other character that we neglected to mention in the previous tale which i'll link up here in the cards if you haven't seen it yet is tonin tutti who is the fairy woman of the river of tuanela the passive water of the swan of tuanela the guardian of the entrance of the mouth of the river she is who determines who will be allowed to be ferried deeper into the finnish underworld and who will not be allowed on her boat she's a very intelligent and dutiful individual but if she is tricked which we see in the instance of von emoyne in in the calivalla if she is tricked or annoyed she will take the living into the land of the dead but this instance is very rare and usually only happens with somebody particularly clever or someone who is particularly annoying now i did not bring her or shorma up in the initial video because that video was meant to be about the family of 20 and 2 and the way that our family tells the story tuan in tutti and suruma are not related but more like employees as tornintuti i believe translates roughly to made of tuani i'm going to read for you briefly the rune 16 of the calavala that references to on in tutti and can get an idea for what her character is and how she is speak the daughter of twenty mana's maiden thus replying thou art a stupid fellow foresight wanting judgment lacking having neither with nor wisdom coming here without a reason coming to tuoni's empire better far if thou should journey to thy distant home and kindred man they that visit mana few return from maria's kingdom in room 16 of the kalavala when vonnemoynin tries to get tuonin tutti the fairy woman of the river of tuanella or the river of tuoni to take him deeper into the land he tells her lies about how he got to the river and she doesn't believe him but after arguing some she finally agrees to ferryboine amoynin deeper in and doesn't forget to remind him how foolish his actions are vonnemorne and of course being the heroic bardic character of the calavala uh who with his friend lemoncoin and lyman coinen uh invade into pohola which is the land in which laohi rules the harsh winter of the north wrought with blood-sucking creatures cannibals and the worst of the worst kind of monsters speaking of laohi and love now i hope that i have said everything better this time i have had help from one of your actually many of your countrymen but one in particular mr frog jones has assisted me greatly in learning these things and will help me in the future as well to bring more of the richness of finnish culture to the broad stage of the world so lauhi is widely considered to be the villain of the calavala and her relationship with lavi arthur is complex because in some versions of the story they are the same character and in others they are completely separate now the older translations the early ones seem to place them together much in the way that frigg and freyja in norse mythology end up being conflated but later translations determined that they are in fact separated deities now in the way that our family tells the story laviata is the daughter of twoney and when she becomes impregnated by ikotoroso the east wind the god of war the great squid monster of the sea in our version of the story son of uco but that is not the common tale uco being god of storms and the elder god of the finnish pantheon and i do know that there is not a traditional finnish pantheon the way that finnish gods and spirits work is not the same as it is with other mythologies and there are no two mythologies that are exactly the like but i do use common language so that these things are relative so when i say pantheon i really just mean list now in our version of the tale la viater is the only character to begin with but when she becomes pregnant her mind splits in two and there are two ways that this happens one she becomes two entirely separate people the other is that she has a multiple personality that switches her appearance uh changes and takes away her blindness and many other things and in one version of the story where she's separated into two this is facilitated by the elder god uko now in that version of the story laviata is cast out of tuanella by her father throny when she becomes impregnated by the east wind because it is believed that she was impregnated by abominations even by the standard of tuanela so she is cast out to the north to manila or pohola where she is forced to give birth to these children alone but she is weakened and she calls out to uko to save her and uko then splits her into laohi being the the hag which though in our version of the story she's not widely considered to be a hag just more of a an an elderly woman and the idea of the hag is one that is very popular in many germanic as well as norse and european mythologies but laohi has been charged with helping laviate to deliver her children who then become the nine diseases those nine diseases being as follows colic pleurisy fever ulcer plague the dread consumption gout sterility and cancer now the ninth disease being up for debate as well as the tenth child of loviata which is her daughter who we spoke about in the last instance and i was misspoken when i said that the child was cast out to die but the child was cast out with the intent to have it die in the mythology she does not die she actually becomes strife and envy though in our version of the tale we more literally translate it as the embodiment of nightmares so loviatar's daughter becomes the living embodiment of nightmares while her other sons the nine sons become the great diseases and plagues of mankind and then laohi being separated from laviator goes on to rule in pahola as its sovereign leader and very much so does not exhibit many characteristics of being a villain she rules over a cold and hostile kingdom and like all great rulers seeks more power she has daughters and when it comes time for her daughters to be married off in exchange for other things this is where we get to one of the main plot points of the kalavala where we have to deal with the sampo and vona moynin and lyman koinen coming in and causing all kinds of chaos and mischief but that my friends is a story for another time if you have found your place here in my tavern in my study in my hall of stories i bid the join the clan by engaging the
