please ladies and gentlemen you're watching yes the Yankees entertainment and Sports Network [Music] [Music] it's a beautiful beautiful Monday evening here in Toronto so nice that they actually have the roof open at the Roger Center and it is time for baseball as the Yes Network presents the New York Yankees baseball it's the New York Yankees against the Toronto Blue Jays in the first game of a four-game set from Roger Center here in Toronto hi everybody and welcome to Yankees baseball along with David Cohn I'm Mike okay so we'll start with the pitching matchup because you can't start the game without a pitch and Alec Manoa is going to throw the first pitch he gets destroyed for the Blue Jays for the Yankees kind of a two-headed monster Cordero will get the start and then burrito is going to be the bulk guy so the Yankees taking a little bit of a chance do you like the gamble David well I do I think manolo's been so tough on the Yankees perennially that the Yankees are going to go with the strategy and the strategy is use Jimmy Cordero against the top of that order and then Jimmy Cordero so tough against right-handed batters and then Johnny Brito will come in and throw his change up and try to get the bulk out of him but certainly I think it's worth a shot probably Johnny Bruno might be making his last appearance with Luis Severino coming off the the IL well what hell's pitching is when you score a lot of runs and the Yankees have started to do that they're getting healthier still not all the way back but the bottom line is they've gone back to hitting home runs and that's when they click well they are the Bronx bombers I mean that this is how they do it and everything starts from there when they're hitting home runs especially at home and those left-handed bats are going over the short porch it means a lot to the Yankees and certainly when you get the kids coming through and Anthony Bowlby over the last eight games starting to really swing in and then Anthony Rizzo the longtime Chicago Cub certainly looks like he's born to wear those Pinstripes and certainly has a swing built for Yankee Stadium and then oh yeah the guy who hit 62 home runs last year is back and starting to feel it and he leads every so in the last 12 games the Yankees starting to click their record as the team is 8-4 averaging over six runs per game hitting 268. they have 25 home runs in 12 games slugging at 506 and they've scored four or more runs and 10 of those 12 games and that will in fact get it done so these two teams they are obviously AL East Rivals sometimes they don't even like each other this should be a fun series when we get back lineups first pitch baseball Yankees Blue Jays next right here on yes thank you Yankees baseball on yes has brought you in part by FanDuel make every moment more by Bigelow the official hot tea of the Yankees by NYU langone Health the number one Hospital in the U.S for neurology and neurosurgery and by the New York Lottery get out there and play please play responsibly must be 18 or over [Music] about to begin a four-game set between the Yankees and the Blue Jays pretty good Trio right there and look who's bringing out the line of Court the man most people ever played with him call Cap Tom Mattingly he is the bench coach for the Blue Jays and wearing his familiar number 23. not many people in baseball don't like Don Mattingly he just commands respect right you walk into a clubhouse and he's had an impact on these Blue Jays they all talk about his professionalism and that's what I saw when he was a teammate of mine I like Manoa making his way in from the bullpen in left field he will get the start against the Yankees Yankees just put four games against the Tampa Bay Rays and seven games in 10 days where they won three they lost four and in six of the games David the margin of victory was one run so you could say that the race could have taken all seven and the Yankees could have taken six out of seven because one game was 8-2 Tampa Bay yeah we're just really getting used to the new schedule this year more balanced schedules so you don't face these guys as much this year that makes these games all the more important those raised games are important these Blue Jays games are important this four game set in Toronto really in the month of May is as big as it gets now this uh brancher center field is a little bit different than it has been they've had a 300 million dollar makeover in the Outfield it's kind of a jagged edge offense with some weird uh caroms uh the bullpens have been elevated and that area is closer to the field but a higher wall to take away some of the home runs you played here a long time Dave it's a little interesting very interesting it's more hitter friendly it's more fan friendly the bullpens are much better just a better vantage point the fans get to see the pitchers warm up you're kind of buried in the bullpens before hard to see people both as a player and as a fan so yes so far so good everything looks really good from FAL pool to foul pole in the center field area all right we'll see how it plays over these four games let's take a look at the Yankees starting lineup brought to you by Tick Tock Jake Bowers gets to start in left field the right fielder is Aaron judge mad at second Anthony Rizzo just named American League player of the week he's at first base hitting third cleaning up second baseman flavor Torres Willie Calhoun and DH were back fifth addict six the shortstop Anthony Volpe Oswaldo Cabrera Third Base will about seventh batting eighth and catching Kyle hit gashioka and Aaron Hicks back in the lineup playing Centerfield he will bat ninth against the ready Manoa they're giving lemayu and Bader the day off although their players Off the Bench if need be and that's the uh the man that the lineup is gonna face yeah and the reason being is that Alec Benoit not only has pitched very well against the Yankees in his career but he's really tough on right-handed batter so earlier the Yankees trying an opener strategy they're starting they're trying to line up strategy as well and those are manoa's numbers on the year and eight Stars the eras elevated the walks are really the story 25 walks in 41 Innings that's not him and as we said before in the pitcher Scout report brought to you by Nissan think of when you think about Manoa he's been tough on the Yankees is around 1.93 career era that is the lowest minimum seven game started if anybody in modern history and the radar love that's that's in reference to the the control the command issues he's had he hasn't been able to kind of find the strike zone too many walks and it really comes down to a slider the slider woes this year slugging percentage over 700 off of his slider this year he's given up four home runs that's his best pitch and that's why the Yankees are choosing to go with all those left-handed hitters or at least the ones they have on the roster to try to neutralize that slider that he's had trouble with this year uh let's check out the defense behind Manoa is presented by Buick Dalton varsho is in love Kevin Kiermaier is in center and George Springer over and right in the infield you've got Chapman a platinum Glove winner at third Boba shett it short Whit Merrifield plays second Brandon Belt is at first behind the plate Alejandro Kirk and Alec Manoa is on the mound Vlad Guerrero Jr is the DH today all right it's time now to check out the keys to the game brought to you by your local Kia dealers well we'll find out early if the opener strategy Works trying to get through that tough top of the order with Cordero and then use your bulk guy and burrito and then on the other end of it can you can you wait out Manoa make him throw strikes kind of get him in trouble early in this game see if that works and finally break through and then of course it always comes down to especially with these two teams and now in this ballpark the Home Run differential who out homers each other and this four game set is going to go a long way to determine the winners all right so this should be fun Yankees 23 and 19. the Blue Jays are 24 and 16. Jake powers six for his last 14. he's ready Alec Manoa is ready and let's do it here in Toronto pitch outside we're underway Clint vondrak is the home plate on pirate James Hoy the crew chief is at first DJ Rayburn at second John lipka is over third [Applause] there's a strike one-on-one you cannot ask for a better opportunity if you're Jake Bowers right now opportunity's knocking let's check out vondrak the scattering Port has him as hit or friendly calls fewer High strikes fewer inside strikes on Lefty batters relatively new he's in his fourth Big League season two and two the roof is open here at Roger center it's been a beautiful day in Toronto they expect a fairly big crowd [Applause] Bowers one away but there's a reason they call it high and tight if you're a right-handed pitcher facing a left-handed batter that's where you want to try to throw it if you can especially with a little pimp on it 94 miles an hour right on by [Applause] so here's Aaron judge just a rock 'em sock'em series between the Yankees and the Rays and judge made the final out in the bottom of the ninth inning yesterday and just missed a game-tying home run against Jason Adam of the Tampa Bay Rays just missed it and the wind had something to do with it had an effect said it uh brought it in 28 feet but everybody at the Ballpark thought this was out including Jason Adams for 111 miles an hour up a judge's back how did that not leave [Applause] grounded foul you know we talk a lot about Yankee Stadium yeah it yields home runs everybody talks about the short porch but in a run as a run scoring environment it plays fairly neutral a lot of it is because of Death Valley where Aaron judge hit that ball [Applause] high drive right field going back Springer turning looking see ya a home run the other way for judge and it's one nothing Yankees foreign ballpark Michael is that particular part where the new bullpens are a little bit shorter Dimensions now that fences have been brought in a little bit Aaron judge takes advantage right away ninth home run of the year for judge that'll bring up Rizzo High Fly ball right field backing up his Springer he's there to make the play [Applause] look at this four seamer up and out over the plate and Aaron judge goes up and gets it great shot right here Springer knows it that's not coming back classic spinning on the back leg from Aaron judge labor Torres wraps on the left center field it's a base hit bar show will field as Torres picks up a two-out single [Applause] [Music] aggressive first pitch running in Labor's ready for it the Yankees are starting to swing the bat much more aggressively the last 10 games or so here's Willie Calhoun pitch outside from Manoa it's that fine line Michael between getting good pitches to hit but also not letting a good one go by if it's the first one High Drive Right Center Field going back Kiermaier turning looking see ya a two-run home run for Calhoun it is three nothing Yankees [Applause] another left-handed batter doing damage on Alec Manoa this year [Applause] and once again right down the pipe here's Volpe outside 1-0 [Applause] third home run for Calhoun he now has eight ribbies 2-0 Volpe in his last five games three home runs in eight ribbies overall six and 17. [Applause] if you look under the hood at Anthony volpe's numbers they're all well above average in terms of exit velocity his Barrel rate quality of contact in other words hitting the ball hard consistently sooner or later that's going to pay off in the starting to [Applause] all the way into the seats two and two [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] and that'll do it but the Yankees get three runs on two hits and nobody left the two hits long balls first Aaron judge goes the other way for his ninth of the year then after a single by Torres Willie Calhoun comes up and the Lefty Slugger and Pitch one out for a two-run shot Yankees three blue jays coming to back oh follow with a two-run shot Yankees have more home runs than any team in the month of May let's take a look at the Blue Jays counter win their starting lineup brought to you by Tick Tock Springer bechette and Guerrero Jr at the top of the order Vlad is the DH bar show Chapman and Merrifield in the middle of the order and the bottom third has Brandon Belt at first Alejandro Kirk will catch Kevin Kiermaier plays Centerfield he's good about 90. [Music] it's going to be Jimmy Cordero really been solid for the Yankees out of the bullpen this year 17 strikeouts only three walks and here's Springer a strike let's check out our pitcher scouter report brought to you by Nissan and this first starts inch rookie ball 10 years ago when he's a member of the Blue Jays and the opposing pitcher was Luis Severino we ended up throwing five shutout Innings back in 2013 in June and he's tough on right-handed batters a 171 256 257 triple slash line that's why he's going to face the top of the order here and and after Jimmy Cordero it's going to be here's Johnny Brito gonna be the bulk guy following up Jimmy Cordero as the opener [Applause] chopped to third Cabrera there across the diamond one down let's check out the Yankee defense presented by Buick Bowers and left Hicks in center and judge over and right infield you've just seen Oswaldo in third Anthony bolby plays short clever tours at second Anthony Rizzo the first baseman August yoga behind the plane catching Jimmy Cordero [Music] so here is boba shett up and in as his helmet goes flying [Applause] Jimmy Cordero throws a running hard two seamer and when you get under it a little bit it could ride up and in you can see that spin introducing himself to Mr bechette [Applause] thought the other way the chef with 54 hits that's the most of any player in the American League East he's a hit machine 191 in 2021 won 89 last year also first with total bases 87 total bases [Applause] chopped up the middle right there is Volpe two down let's look at the game time weather presented by Bigelow the official hot tea of the Yankees It's a gorgeous day 72 and it feels just like that humidity is 29 the wind out of the West at 16 miles per hour the CN Tower perfect name for baseball so here's Vlad [Applause] High Fly ball left field Bowers on the run on the track he makes the play as the Blue Jays go down on order one two three against Cordero nine pitch inning [Music] all right so here's how they changed Rogers Center the dark blue numbers of what it is now and the white numbers are the old Dimensions you see the the wall Heights as well so by the bullpens they definitely pulled it in it's shorter but the wall is higher to make a little more difficult to hit the ball over Chuck doesn't have a problem neither did Calhoun Oswaldo Cabrera will lead off against Manoa and there's a strike you talked to Aaron Boone before the game the question was what if Cordero has a quick one two three inning will you run him back out there for the second I think that they were going to decide that right before the game you see Johnny Brito warming up in Earnest so if you get Cordero out now then he can pitch again tomorrow if you need him in that bullpen or do you try to get greedy and push another inning out of him just a nine pitch first inning while fouled away [Applause] [Applause] Oswaldo skips rope he's starting to come around after a real tough streak he's eight for his last 22 in his last seven games with eight runs batted in hitting 364. he had seven rubies and the first 29 games of the year [Applause] just feels like a better role for him moving around playing a little more infield you know him is the everyday starting left fielder was always a bit of a stretch [Applause] and he worked the wall lead off walk Cabrera goes to First let's take a look at manoa's Arsenal on statcast 3D by Google Cloud there's the comparison between this year and last year yeah I mean his sinker's still really good he threw probably more four seamers last year the slider is the story for me this year that's the one that he's had trouble with especially the left-handed batters did they get him yes they did he was lean and he was going and he got picked off well he's staying at first base as if he might be safe we'll see that the Yankees challenge [Applause] they will not challenge [Applause] so one down oh very close yes [Applause] the gashioka pops it up long run for belt toward the seats but it's about five rows back well Manoa his strikeout rate is down his walk rate is nearly double his era was 2.60 over his first two seasons 4.83 coming into this game so something is amiss they're just trying to find out what and strangely Davis the the the game that he faced the Yankees on April 22nd he was the old Manoa yes seven Innings two hits in the lower run he gets fired up for the Yankees [Applause] you know there's been some conjecture he is a big Burly guy that maybe the pitch clock is tiring him out but with that effect that just one pitch yeah I'm not sure I mean let's get through a little bigger sample size and talk about pictures and injuries and Recovery in between whether you can talk about the pitch clock being a factor or not [Applause] one thing about a slider Michael is over the last two years it's really breaking much less the quality on it as well 2021 he had 7.9 inches of break above average horizontally speaking that sweeping slider it's down to 3.8 this year he's lost like three almost four inches on that slider let's take a deep dive into Alec Monroe the indeed player resume 11th overall pick in 19 out of West Virginia All-Star last year finished third in the Cy Young voting and is here against the Yankees as David mentioned earlier 1.93 best since 1920 of any pitcher with a minimum of seven stars but that has gone up with the three runs he gave up in the first inning there's Hicks Wanna Know Hicks has been out since injuring his hip scoring from third not enough to put him on the IL but good enough to be in the lineup right now two and out [Applause] three nothing Yankees judge home run solo shot two run shot by Calhoun in the first [Applause] two and one and talk about the Yankees and taking a chance in their lineup Willie Calhoun paying big dividends for stamp bat the left-handed lineup Le Mayhew and Vader are probably going to be in this game before it's over especially on defense for Bader blind job it's a base hit over belt and into right field Springer Fields turns and fire so Hicks with a two out single [Applause] the numbers are pretty Stark can you see there that slider is just kind of sitting there and hanging exactly what we were talking about in terms of the break posing batters left-handers are hitting 353 off of that pitch this year the 753 sluggy percentage so that's why the Yankees went with this left-handed hitting lineup Jake Bowers takes inside 1-0 [Applause] and Aaron Boone it's talked about Bowers as a guy he really likes didn't quite see it in spring training but he feels like he's got a chance to really stick an obvious open pole in left field for the Yankees in their lineup and a left-handed bat with pop would be just what the doctor ordered [Applause] 3-0 on Bowers with judge on debt exactly the way it's played out for Manoa this year gets left-handed batter 17 walks and 17 strikeouts so far this year [Applause] [Applause] so three and one on Bowers [Applause] High Fly ball deep Center kiermeier back track wall leaps and he makes the play for the final out no run to hit no errors and one man left on base so close we go to the bottom of a second hybrid vehicles of the Yankees tonight's picture was submitted by Henry his mother taught him everything he knows about the Yankees and they still love going to the ballpark together good son Henry I like that and a late happy Mother's Day use the hashtag Toyota pinstrike Pride mention yes send pictures you posted social media to reflect your love for the bronze bombers we might Spotlight you in a future game bar show leads off and it's still Johnny Brito and he deals a strike or Cordero and yeah I'm sorry cordarius so yeah they chose to get a little greedy they like that quick one two three inning try to get a repeat of the first inning [Music] [Applause] the only problem with that is is that if he gets in trouble you got to bring burrito in in the middle of an inning so that's the gamble for Aaron Boone and Matt Blake you would prefer that burrito came in on a fresh inning with nobody on base and even if he works a one two three inning where he has to throw 25 pitches which happens Tennessee available tomorrow probably not [Applause] grounded foul so he threw nine pitches in the first inning [Music] [Applause] two and two on bar show Empire Scouting Report was dead on the hitter's Umpire nice try by Kyle hagashioka back there just missed two and two Blue Jays have won three in a row they just swept the Braves an impressive sweep and they've won six of eight [Applause] and the pitch I'm making them work so seven pitches to this battery through nine to get three outs in the first and the at-bat continues Marshall kind of got off to a slow start this year but he's been much better as of late well Jay's really coveted him in the offseason really went after him thought he would fit this lineup so well all that right-headed pop they have they really needed a counterbalance and somebody could play defense still two and two we're all high quality pitches too from Cordero good pitches good foul-offs Line Drive Oh What A Catch by Volbeat he went up and came down with the line drive for out number one [Applause] [Music] can see he is pushing the limit as Volbeat great anticipation and athleticism he's just on the other side of the bag and then moves and jumps [Applause] about that reaction time [Applause] there's Travis Chapman he takes a strike Chapman was the player of the month in April where he hit 384. this month he's hitting 174. oh and two [Applause] let's take a look at the Genesis hitter scatter report on Chapman well you said it Michael the April fire he was a player of the month in the American League in April and then those May struggles those numbers you men mentioned but one thing that's constant with Chapman is his glove is gold at third base and overall the numbers are still solid gonna be a free agent at the end of the year [Applause] driven out to left field on the run as Bowers and he makes the play nice play by Bowers defense supported Cordero in this inning wasn't sure he was going to get there I'm not sure he thought he was going to get there as you see he's a little off balance almost jumped too soon but good coverage [Applause] and a pitch clock violation on Cordero so it's a one account [Applause] with Merrifield a really solid hitter hitting 281 home run 15 rubies versatile player play all over the diamond so that's 2-0 now because of the violation 3-0 Brandon Belt is on Deck not strike one three one Johnny Brito has had plenty of time to get loose so if you lose this guy you could bring in the change up throwing Brito for the Lefty hitting belt three and two [Applause] chop the third Cabrera gets Merrifield a perfect two innings for Jimmy Cordero as the opener six up six down [Music] the Audi electric moment experience a fully electric Audi vehicle at your local Tri-State Audi dealer today and this happened in the first inning with one out Aaron judge went the other way picked up his ninth home run of the year and oh he missed those 10 games he's starting to pick up the pace and Willie Calhoun later in the inning a two-run shot his third of the year he has eight ribbies and with those two swings he's have a three-nothing lead so judge will lead off here in the third [Applause] inside 1-0 [Applause] 2-0 on Judge good tank with this home plate umpire back there the early read we know we showed you he's more hitter friendly you've got to get Manoa in the strike zone [Applause] two and one Cordero gets some love and Cordero had some game face on before the game in the clubhouse the Yankee Clubhouse he had the look of a starter did his job Michael but you're right he's probably out for tomorrow but it is a big four game set here so maybe games three and four of the series he could be back [Applause] just missed the outside corner judge works the wall good at bat laying off that Manoa slider once again [Music] Miss Anthony Rizzo off to a great start Fly ball a right in the first inning 12-game on Bay Street and during that streak hitting 396. [Applause] they talk about how mentally it's Freedom up not looking at 15 guys on the right side of the infield obviously that's a hyperbolic but he just feels he has a chance if he pulls a ground ball [Applause] ET Shades but doesn't shift he's almost behind second that's about as legally as far as you could go David what beshette's doing and we saw Anthony Volpe make a great play in the previous inning a similar position now once the ball is released you can move just have to start on that side Fly ball Center Kiermaier there two up one out with judge heading back to First [Music] that brings up glamor Torres singles the left Center and the first camera on the score on Cal Calhoun's home run foreign [Applause] the whole idea of banning the ship Michael Theo Epstein talked about it Major League Baseball has talked about just trying to bring athleticism back into the game so it's more important than ever for those middle infielders to anticipate the flow of the game type of pitch that's coming that's why your middle infielders have pitchcom too they'll have it in their ear they know what the pitch is that's coming they're in sync with the pitcher and Catcher And you can kind of lean one way or the other and anticipate where the ball is going to be hit [Applause] two and one [Applause] inside three and one boy the Blue Jays really need Manoa to be the pitcher he was the last two years a lot of this team built around the fact that he's their Ace and so far one and three 4.83 coming into this this is not the picture he's been in 21 and 22. nub foul in front of the plate three and two [Music] you see a guy who was so dominant all of a sudden struggle you start to think about physical things and I was going to ask you about the precipitous drop in the movement on the slider what usually is a manifestation of that well it could be mechanical but you're right maybe the the workload has gotten to him over the last couple of years he's been a horse [Applause] he claims he's fine sometimes it becomes mental when you're struggling with a particular pitch 2021 that slider had over 15 inches of horizontal break overall 15.5 this year it's down to 12.7 almost three inches less sweep or horizontal movement on it this year we've seen it kind of inconsistent right kind of ones up when he leaves in one backs up when he throws this good one it's missing off the plate and that's the strategy when you face him get him on the dish get him on the plate especially with the slider don't chase if he can Fly ball center field Kiermaier is there two outs let's take a look at the Yankee leaders brought to you by citizens made ready we imagine the Yankees have the most home runs in May with 28 followed by the Braves and the Royals they're tied with 23. Dodgers and raising the Cardinals they have two tonight with judge in Calhoun and they're still waiting for one of their big home run hitters to get back in a lot of Sean Carlos Stanton yeah anxiously awaiting Meredith marakovitz's report I need some info here I've been gone a while that gets away as judge will move to Second David what do you want to know a lot of injuries everything well we'll start with Luis Severino he is getting very very close he's expected to throw a rehab start for the Somerset Patriots tomorrow the Yankees will then decide what they want to do with him thereafter there's a chance you could see him with the big league club as early as Sunday so that'd be great news for that rotation Tommy canely not eligible to come off of the IL until the end of the month because he's on the 60-day right now but he is expected to start his rehab assignment with the Tampa tarpons on Thursday Aaron Boone saying he'd like him to get four or five appearances they'll decide thereafter they're not sure how many he's going to need but it'll be based on how he feels and how he's throwing it and that was the injury report brought to you by Montefiore Einstein the official Hospital of the New York Yankees Calhoun flies out we go to the bottom of the Third [Music] done another quarter Zone injection scheduled for this week through Friday Saturday and today everything is gone according to plan what else you have Meredith well Aaron Booth said he may not need that second set of cortisone injections it was something that was scheduled when he had the first one they were going to see how the first one took and he may or may not have to get the second injection if he gets a second injection he'll have to stop throwing for a couple days before he starts throwing again but right now they are not sure if he needs it also Giancarlo stantoni asked about him he was doing some agility drills at Yankee Stadium before we left Aaron Boone said still a little ways away Josh Donaldson probably a little bit ahead of him but no rehab date set yet for Josh Donaldson David you're all caught up Giancarlo the Greek god of exit velocity need him back in the lineup and he's been doing some stuff in the cage Josh Donaldson has been hitting on the field so both those guys seem like they'll be here sooner rather than later 2-1 on Brandon Bell in his last eight games 11 hits and 24 bets [Applause] you know according to what player fan may like or not like every addition back to the pre-planned lineup means so much how much did Judge mean when he was out those 10 games look how different the lineup feels with Aaron judge there push button it's a beauty by belt it's gonna be a base hit and David I think the same thing goes for Giancarlo and for Josh Donaldson just makes the planning for pitcher different I agree completely the deeper the lineup it is and then if you're going to try a butt late enough and inning is probably the right time to do it nobody out try to get something started on a new pitcher so here is Kirk [Applause] did David mention this in the open this could be the last time we see burrito if in fact everything goes well with Severino and then he comes back on on Sunday [Applause] and the way the the villain starters have worked the guy who has done the best has been her mod then it would be Schmidt and then it would be burrito so in that order when people back you'll see those those pictures eliminated or sent down to go to the bullpen yeah you need to maintain your starter rotation depth and if you send burrito to AAA then you make you keep him stretched out don't you believe that Schmidt's tempting to put in the vulpa well yeah absolutely I mean the argument there is that if you put him in the bullpen and keep Johnny Brito here then you lose starting rotation depth because then and Clark Schmidt won't be stretched out you'll start using him more regularly as a multi-union reliever and then you lose that extra piece in the rotation [Applause] so you figure Severino comes back it would be burrito down to AAA and then if rodon comes back when he comes back then you would assume you'd move Schmidt into the bowl possibly yes at that point depending you make that decision when you have to you know the best late plans you know it get changed quickly in this game on this level he's done pretty well what do you think about it he's not supposed to be here he's supposed to be in Triple A still developing he's lost that development time but getting valuable experience up here but he needs work on that third pitch he needs work on his breaking ball especially against right-handed batters chop the third let's see the thing there's two glaber took his time knowing exactly who was running so it's an Around the Horn a double play [Music] first things first Oswaldo Cabrera is a really good infielder wherever he plays and Claver had a little trouble getting the handle there kind of juggled it just a bit I think we've lost sight you know with Oswaldo Cabrera playing The Outfield so much and moving around he's a really good infielder no matter where he plays Third Base outstanding a really good shortstop and second base as well so this role that Cabrera is in now suits him much better all in one on Kiermaier [Applause] Fly ball center field Hicks is there backing up reaching up and making the play no runs ahead no errors because of the DP nobody left three nothing eggs [Music] well let's check out the T-Mobile coverage Cam and it's on defense well that is as good as it gets from Anthony Volpe up the middle Jake Bowers chasing it down there's Volpe the lead off struck out in the first lined and it's a fair ball hit the line kicks off the side wall volpe's going for two the throw is not in time Alito double for Anthony Volpe [Applause] but fair or foul how about right on the chalk line and there's no guarantee he's going to get a double out of this you see him out of the box he smells it and you got to turn it on right here and this is where he gets it the burners come on and he outruns that throw super shot off the end of the bat but long through the zone and kept it fair here's Cabrera [Applause] Cabrera walked in the second then promptly got picked off at first [Applause] 2-0 [Applause] think if you're bulpey and you're thinking about stealing thirds you might want to wait for gashioka up there the right-handed swinger [Applause] he's got manoa's attention and that's what I love about the potential distraction that he brings and speaking from experience Michael that drove me nuts on the mound just another thing to worry about is this kid going to go next thing you know you fall down 3-0 because of that distraction the residual effect of speed and the potential of a stolen base [Applause] 58 pitches for Manoa 29 strikes so 50 50. 3-0 three and one [Applause] for Cabrera get something to pull they had a wall second walk of cabera first and second nobody out that'll bring up higashioka and that'll bring up Pete Walker the pitching coach [Applause] Luis Ross the verbal sign [Applause] when the pitcher that's been so good suddenly loses his command two things come to mind one is is this a precursor to him not being right physically somewhere somehow is he telling the truth is he okay that's the first thing that shows up when you start to get fatigued or broken down a little bit as you lose the radar the command of your pitches secondly you start thinking about confidence too you start guiding it you don't throw with us as much as much conviction stop trusting your stuff well the Blue Jays are expecting a bunt here from higashioka Hicks is on Deck first and second nobody out Yankees have a three-nothing lead cut [Applause] and when you look for like problem physically people automatically well the velocity is fine but that doesn't mean anything you can generate velocity absolutely the first thing to go is command you can still generate arm speed but to be able to hold onto the ball and throw it where you're trying to throw it is is the first piece of the puzzle that goes when you start to get fatigued or broken down [Applause] 0-2 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] now you don't deer make the first out of third but if there's one out you could see this duo with a double steal as Hicks is up now it'll be batting from the left side giving Kirk a clear throw to third but we'll see what they do call back it's there for the taking when when Volpe wants it and as you said Michael Cabrera will follow Manoa going to the changeup just to show you that against a right-handed batter and a strikeout situation he's not trusting the slider two straight change UPS to higashioka [Applause] way out in front just got a piece Now The Man Behind the plate Alejandro Kirk is throwing up four of 19 attempted base Steelers so that's 21.1 percent the Major League average this year is 21.6 so it was right about average Volpe has five steals of third base 13 overall and 13 tries grounded foul take a look at cuyahogashioka two pitches ago oh we got a little Splinter off the end of that bat [Applause] not enough to get a new bat he's yeah he doesn't even know [Applause] line drive it's a base hit to right field cutting it off his Springer they're going to wave home Volpe he will score moving to third is Oswaldo Cabrera it's an RBI single for her gashioka and it's four nothing Yanks [Applause] well just outstanding bad control from kyogashioka who inside outs that fastball first and second nobody out let me have a productive at-bat oh yeah I'll take a knock at an RBI as well got caught going back there wasn't sure if that was going to get caught on the line drive plenty of speed to recover and go ahead and score here's Aaron Hicks single this first time up he takes a strike six hits for the Yankees and three plus Innings against Manoa first and third nobody out here in the fourth you go for The Knockout Punch after the Yankees Aaron Hicks in the nine hole you ready to turn over the order again still nobody out [Applause] one on one [Applause] [Applause] two and one [Applause] you know Manoa has said that one of the promises here he's trying to hit Corners he said my stuff is good enough I should just throw strikes but he doesn't seem like he has the confidence to just throw the ball over the plate yeah that's an excellent point confidence is so fleeting now he's spraying the ball you could tell 3-1 [Applause] it's a lot of good at bats and a lot of good swings from the shanky lineup tonight top to bottom [Applause] and he walked him to load the bases [Applause] well there's action in the blue cheese ballpen [Applause] John Schneider will have to decide when he wants to take the ball from Manoa [Applause] you know at some point you have to protect your gun starter base is loaded nobody out you're already in the middle of a long inning the start is starting it's starting to unravel on him out there [Applause] but for for a manager you have to you have to get to the point where you have to protect him and not hang him out to dry even though you need some more more depth from him [Applause] Nate Pearson is throwing in the bullpen kaburra third hegacio gets second Hicks is it first Bowers at the plate [Applause] popped up Shallow Center buchette is there for the first out and now he has to face power and judge [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] judge with a home run in the first inning to Right Center then he walked in the third [Applause] Bases Loaded one out way outside [Applause] judges completely in the driver's seat right here make sure you get a good pitch to swing at [Applause] Texas strike [Applause] four run six hits for the Yankees no runs one hit a bunt single by the Blue Jays against the combination of burrito and Cordero [Applause] 1-1 there's a slider one thronewell effective one and two [Music] against Manoa two for 20. [Applause] but the two left the yard [Applause] fouled away oh good pitch to hit there just missed it tell judges but body language he knows it got a real hanger gyro slider sitting right there [Applause] all right and the 1-2 outside two and two [Applause] Anthony Rizzo is on Deck Bases Loaded one out one run in it's four nothing inks thank you and the pitch [Applause] three and two crowd wanted it Manoa wanted it well our scatter report was dead on right for our umpire back there hitter friendly [Applause] and now bondrak is telling the Blue Jays dug out enough urge enough [Applause] 3-2 checks the swing he does not go that'll force it a run judge picks up another ribby Yankees pick up another run it's five nothing [Applause] let's take a look at the pitching decisions presented by Sage well it's an excellent at-bat as he spits on that first slider away takes that one really good one there for Manoa that one hangs he wants that one back and now judge does what judge does best make him throw the ball over the plate and not Chase and the pitch outside to Rizzo as they continue to hang with Manoa 81 pitches still one out here in the fourth bases remain loaded [Applause] off the middle grabbed by bechet there's one on to first it's a double play but the Yankees get two runs on two hits three walks five nothing [Applause] [Music] game now available at a new low price starting at 119.99 blackout and other restrictions apply visit MLB.TV for details Cadillac scoreboard Yankees lead this five nothing big double play off the bat of Rizzo ended the threat without further damage from Manila Owen one count on Springer as we go to the bottom of the fourth inside one and one [Applause] upstairs two and one Yankee started with the opener if you just tuned in six up six down against Jimmy Cordero and then Brito started the Third gave up a bunt leading our single to Belt quickly erased on a double play off the bat of Kirk Kiermaier with a Fly ball to Center so nine up nine down minimum nine that's the numbers on Manoa so far 82 pitches doesn't like he's coming out five walks six hits [Applause] grounded to Volpe one away [Music] as as volpe's defense surprise you this year based on the reports that we heard well the one report you always heard he didn't have the arm for sure and I have not seen the the arm being short at all and he makes the place I I think he's surprised some people in terms of some of the scouting reports we got not that we didn't expect him to be good but he's better than advertised at shortly [Applause] and boona said he projects as a short side but a lot of people say well eventually he'll move to Second Yankees don't think that they think he's a short stop yeah lying to right field it's a base hit in front of Judge so buchette picks up the one out single uh Dynamic swing of Beau buchette the coiling leg kick fighting that pitch off [Music] [Applause] Guerrero over one pitch inside this is the part of the lineup that the opener strategy is based on [Applause] Johnny Brito trying to get through the tough part maybe twice tonight that's all not three times [Applause] grounded foul David did you call your buddy George Brett 70th birthday today wow I know that's it's remarkable because you know when he broke in in the mid the late 70s I was a teenager you know worshiping him and I got a chance to be a teammate [Applause] one and two he was larger than life in in Kansas City kind of felt like he put Kansas City on the map him and Hal McRae and those Royals teams of the 70s 70s [Applause] to this day every time I see Keith Hernandez see you he calls you George because he used to always tell George birthstones told George Brett stories and I hit like him too I was a left-handed Banner Charlie Lau School of hitting the legendary hitting coach for the Royals lean back [Music] [Applause] let's see if they can turn two there's one and there's two minimum 12 batters faced by Yankee pitching as we go to the fifth inning five nothing Yanks hey Yankee fans is there a hero in your life who hits it out of the park well Hyundai wants to award a hero with a 2023 Hyundai Tucson to nominate your hero use the QR code right there on the screen or visit Hyundai salute the heroes.com tell us why they should win we go to the fifth inning five nothing Yankees first game of this four-game set and Torres swings and misses [Applause] one-on-one [Applause] [Applause] two and one tight at the bottom of the zone for pitchers tonight [Applause] labor one for two with a run scored popped it up belt giving it a look but it's in the seats jacked up to sound system here with the roof open they really have a lot of fun during the radio show today [Applause] three and two house music going on here earlier in the day for BP [Applause] upstairs so a walk to gleber Torres and his problem with walks continue Josh Allen was here Buffalo Bills great quarterback taking BP pretty nice swing right yeah representative big dude and Michael he actually hit it up into the second deck which was impressive but he wasn't the only one that was here Matt Barkley was here as well he hit five out during that little session and Matt Barkley and Garrett Cole actually grew up in the same area they played for a rival high schools obviously Garrett a baseball player Matt Barkley a big time football player Garrett said that he had gone to games watched him play football in the past both in high school and college and ever since high school everyone had always told Garrett Cole that they were born not only on the same day same year but in the same hospital now today he met Matt Barkley for the first time and he asked him about that he said no that's not true I wasn't born at that hospital but still pretty cool they showed the same birthday and they now live just a few minutes away from each other in Newport now Barkley the backup quarterback for the bills behind Josh Allen [Applause] pitch outside 3-0 there's Barkley and Cole talking no I wasn't born in the hospital what are you talking about nope but the facts get in the way of a good story Just Go With It [Applause] Cole's big enough to be a quarterback has the arm another walk [Applause] seven walks tonight and that is a career high yeah I mean I I would be worried if I'm in the Blue Jays Dugout I cannot let this go on much much longer right this guy's too important to your rotation when you see somebody out there not finishing his pitches like that to me that's a real red flag on the flip side David you think okay it's five nothing let him work through this and and figure it out or is it too dangerous I think you're past that point for tonight with 92 pitches and seven walks that's enough so Nate Pearson is ready and John Schneider will probably well now going to take the ball from Alec Manoa now for the last two years been one of the best pitchers in baseball and he has struggled this season seven walks of career high tonight gave up a couple of home runs five runs and the two Runners on base are his responsibility so Manoa departs Pearson comes on to face Volpe Yankees lead five nothing [Applause] well the yes half is more more ways to watching experience live Yankees Nets and Liberty games more ways to interact with family and friends with yes watch party more ways to win big cash prizes with yes pick and play games for the best seat in the house download the yes app now remember direct the consumer is now available tough line for Alec Manoa he's giving up five runs the runners on base are his responsibility here's Nate Pearson against Volpe on strike Nate Pearson at one point Big Time Prospect big dude Big Arm he can bring it [Applause] tripping down the left field line but it hooked foul [Applause] in 2020 he was considered the seventh best Prospect on baseball America's top 100 prospects list [Applause] [Music] High Fly ball deep left going back vorshow he's on the track and I'll make the play banging up against the wall both Runners tag and they will advance [Applause] oh really carries almost fools of our show got it he's got to keep backpedaling bracing for the impact it's a different ballpark up here especially in the gaps well down five nothing the Blue Jays have to bring the infield in we're on the sun second and third Oswaldo cabera swings and misses [Applause] Pearson a former first round draft pick in 2017 out of Central Florida Community College 28th pick overall but he has never reached what the Blue Jays hoped for him with his arm it's hard to be a major league starter hard to be a starter anywhere a lot of guys with big arms that were once big time starting prospects end up in the bullpen [Applause] and find success looks like he talks to himself on the mountain [Applause] you're right good pickup not exactly like the bird Mark fidrich but you start talking to the ball that's when that's a whole different level vidricher talked right to the ball tell her where to go well pitchers used to talk to the mound too yeah talk to everything line drive right field Springer's there tagging is Torres he's not going to come home the throw is cut off Yankees have hit two balls well nothing to show for it now second and third two outs the glamor gets a bad read on this is he getting right back to tag up although we're springing right I'm not sure he would have gone anyway [Applause] so here is higashioka [Applause] grounded to third Chapman field steps into the throw and that'll do it Pearson does a good job leaves two Runners on we're halfway through five nothing eggs [Applause] [Music] well here's a look at what the pregame run total was for our game when it started courtesy of FanDuel the numbers can change with every pitch so now let's see what the live total is at this very moment same thing right now new customers get 150 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first five dollar bet download the Pandora app now and start making every moment more now we go to the bottom of the fifth inning Yankees up five nothing Dalton varsho leads off Dalton's dad was a big leader and a teammate of Darren Dalton and he's named after Karen Dalton but they didn't go with Darren they went with Dalton ground ball to Second Torres plays it to the side one down Gary varshall I face Gary Marshall when he was with the Cubs way back in the 1980s [Music] it's back when Don Zimmer was managing the Cubs hit runs with the bases loaded yes I was there I saw him do it was Travis Chapman check that Matt Chapman I'm sorry not only did them do that there were two or three foul-offs he kept putting the sign on Bases Loaded one out hit and run everybody's gone [Applause] one and one Zimmer would walk up and down the Dugout too with his chest out talking smack to his team he was a beauty he loved managing in Chicago think about he managed the Red Sox he managed the Cubs when Joe was Ill he managed the Yankees for a while great baseball guy you know he lived in a high-rise right behind Wrigley Field so he'd wake up in the morning and look at the flagpoles to see which way the wind was blowing make out his lineup based on that [Applause] three and two one thing Zimmer was the best at Michael I know you've seen him do it was arguing with umpires his eyes popping out head bobbin grounded right to volpeak it's a nice Hawk two-way now a word from Duncan Duncan rewards are a hit save them stack them use them how you want not a member join on the app today [Music] so two away here in the fifth and that'll bring up Whit Merrifield Johnny Britto adapting well to this opener strategy he's been very sharp is that a strike [Applause] timed his warm-up very well in the first inning and then shut it down and then followed along in the second inning so he had plenty of time but handled it all very well I really feel you and I have talked about this a month ago I believe on air and I think the back of the Yankees rotation is a candidate for the opener strategy both Clark Schmidt and Johnny Brito while he's here are candidates for that especially with somebody like a Jimmy Cordero and a right-handed hitting lineup one and two on Merrifield now obviously if you get Carlos rodon back and Luis Severino back then that changes things [Applause] so far so good tonight strike three Merrifield down looking five innings minimum 15 batters faced hey this is not the time to go for a sandwich no no no no no coming up in the sixth inning Aaron judge he's walked twice and Ernie Homer why would you want to be anywhere else [Applause] [Applause] thank you Bob Montefiore Einstein scoreboard five nothing Yankees right here in Toronto first game of a four-game set and Pearson deals out of the strikes onto Hicks one of those hits with a single and a walk tonight [Applause] want them on I think ohtani's mad the judge got the MVP last year looks like he wants it this year coming back with a vengeance while judge did it in the last year of his deal ohtani maybe he does it in the last deal but I don't think judge is going to give it away easily no he's got a big run in him definitely judges home run in the first really knocked Manoa off his kilter a little bit I know what that feels like first inning trying to get through it and then you give up a big home run and that next thing you know your confidence is shaking a little bit so I think he scored three in the first but he started it that guy three and two on hicks [Applause] powers on Deck swing and a miss tipped into the glove of Kirk one away let's go around the major see what's going on Michael Brantley suffer a setback in his return from right shoulder surgery Astros could use him he's out indefinitely Luis Robert Jr last 12 games has been on fire Mitch Keller he is a gem for the Pirates three in one one era and his last four starts yeah he's flat out dealing is Mitch Keller 13ks in his last start Pirates have started to come down to earth the last couple weeks but he remains Elite the way he's pitching 2-0 to Bowers Bowers is over three two and two [Applause] now it's two and two hours just missed a home run to dead center earlier in the game 399 feet away Full Count [Applause] Pearson on in relief of Manoa and the payoff a little bit high so Bowers Works a walk and that'll bring up judge [Applause] [Music] first inning zero to zero judge goes up and gets it shoots it the other way makes it one to nothing and Manoa from that point on kind of got chased out of the strike zone his control problems kind of started right there water goes and Bowers steals second without a throw [Applause] good scouting report on Pearson who's really slow to home not wasting any time they're going to give it then you got to take it now what you just did was you got judge walked so you took the bat out of his hand and set up the double play with Rizzo coming up and they'll go to the bullpen so that's always the Gamble you get some traffic on the bases but you took the bat out of the hand of your best hitter and Snyder will go to the bullpen so an intentional walk up judge mariso's coming up they're bringing on the Lefty Mesa when we return [Applause] now five men have won an MVP and manager of the Year award who are they tweet your answer using the hashtag Yes Network trivia I can think it too right off the bat [Music] one of them's in the ballpark [Music] so Tim Meza will come on this will be his 18th game good 13 strikeouts 12 and 2 30 I think it's just one walk so first and second for Rizzo one man out [Applause] [Applause] pitch inside 1-0 Yankees lead five nothing we're in the sixth Bowers at second judges it first [Applause] line drive a base hit to right center field scoring easily is Bowers cut off nicely by Kiermaier that'll hold judge at third it's an RBI double for Rizzo and it's six nothing Yanks [Applause] lefties just don't stop him no he's so smart he got off the plate just a little bit normally Rizzo gets right into pitchings more on top of Home Plate he backed off ever so subtly and just laced that pitch on the inner half right into the gap [Applause] it's a really smart hitter with a great approach every single at-bat infield in glamor Torres at the plate fouls It Off very quiet important play by Kiermaier somehow he cut that ball off it goes fast on the artificial turf and that saved judge from scoring and also kept Rizzo from getting a triple [Applause] one and one [Applause] all Yankees so far in game one of this four game set one and two Sometimes the best laid plans are the best laid plans and for the Yankees all the strategies have worked well tonight [Applause] strike three Torres now looking and I was looking at bondrak didn't like the call another look one of the few calls off the plate that we've seen go the pitcher's way tonight [Applause] so here is Willie Calhoun infield backs up now with two outs missed outside 1-0 [Applause] soft ground ball to First Fair ball has belt will step on the bag and Meza allows a one run to score but they lead two five men have won an MVP and manager of the Year award who are they so Mattingly and Tori right finally Tori Frank Robinson let's see Yogi yeah Yogi's a good I don't know if you want to manage every year Robinson Don Baylor and Kirk Gibson wow okay wow good question Montefiore Einstein scoreboard we go to the bottom of the sixth Brandon Bell leads off against Johnny Brito first pitch popped up [Applause] Cabrera and foul territory makes the play one picks one out check out and follow YES Network on Tick Tock for more content Yogi got fired 18 games into the season one year 16. 16 games and [Music] yeah I said see you later for almost two decades have you seen the movie I heard it's great I've not seen it yet I haven't yet either I can't wait to see it great job by the by his family to get that done high five [Applause] kill make the play to retire Kirk two down and guys there was actually a screening during spring training down in Tampa where his granddaughter Lindsey Vera invited me to watch it I went with Susan Waldman as we know Susan played such an integral role of getting George and Yogi back together again and you just learned so much more about Yogi throughout the course of the documentary highly recommend very well done and very enjoyable pitch inside want to know okay take a look on baseballreference.com at Yogi Bear's numbers how good he was I think that that's part of the story from what I gather [Applause] yeah it kind of gets lost maybe with the yogiism but boy could he play one of the best ever grip to right field going back Judd still back he's going to turn play one hop up against the wall and Kiermaier with a double thank you Myers played well here in Toronto put a good signing for them we know about his defense in center field but he's throwing the bat fairly well for them and it continues on here the line drive double so here is George Springer jumps on the first pitch and grounds it to Volpe and that'll do it here in the six no runs a hit one man left on day six in the books we go to the seventh Yankees six nothing on Friday May 26 when the Yankees play the Padres the first 18 000 guests 21 and older are going to receive a Yankee short sleeve hoodie courtesy of Budweiser get your tickets today at yankees.com six nothing Yankees over the Blue Jays the Anthony Rizzo Mandalorian bobblehead was so popular and I'm sure the uh the hoodie is going to be just popular I know my house it will be it's a big deal [Applause] there's a strike to volpeat Rizzo's line was great it's like are you a Mandalorian fan you know I am now we had a big day that day you think a k-con like broadcasting bobblehead would have any traction yeah probably not lined right at Chapman how about if we throw O'Neil in there and Meredith O'Neill's yeah and Meredith definitely I mean that that'll that'll bring her profile up [Applause] O'Neill can do no wrong I know I've seen look it's a little different but the John and Susan bobblehead last year I mean people were lined up for that thing they were trying to get it in the worst way and you know not everybody could get one of those so maybe for you guys they'll be equally excited I don't think we're big enough right David John and Susan they are we're not they're Legends Hall of Famers [Applause] one and one that's pretty cool that's one of the better ones I've seen and David they actually opened the gates early that day and it wasn't even an hour until the gates being open there were already 18 000 people in the ballpark they started lining up at about 2 30. and poor Ryan Ruka we don't know if he got one or not I didn't get him one I told him I would wow one two swing and a miss Cabrera down on strikes [Applause] the ball over the rim I gave you the alley oop and you didn't take it no because you could say well Michael you'd never ever Bobble it they don't have enough plaster for the head well there's a thousand different ways I could have gone with that that's for sure it's gonna break out my John Sterling voice what well Michael grabbed it the third and bobbled the throw to first and they get hagash yoga as the Yankees go down in order one two three time for the seventh inning stretch in Toronto all Yankees six nothing [Music] thank you you know for the Blue Jays Cordero was the opener two innings Aaron judge started things off with a home run and three walks Alec Manoa struggled blue jay offense oh for one with runners in scoring position burrito four Innings three hits and did not allow a run so far still on the mound count on one [Music] [Applause] one [Applause] crowd of 28 810 here at Roger Center now we told you about what they've done in the Outfield that cost 300 million dollars and now they're going to work foul line to foul line [Applause] toward home plate and that's going to cost 500 million and take place over the next two years and they're going to redo the clubhouses and everything you know there was some thought about maybe building a new ballpark but they decided to stay with this so an 800 million dollar facelift [Applause] chopped to second the shot is out bought his breed don't look comfortable [Music] I've been throwing a lot of strikes could not have worked out more perfectly for the Yankees and their strategy now just the second time he's going to have to go through this part of the lineup already here in the seventh inning [Applause] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Applause] two and one on Vlad he's over two with a Fly ball to left then he wrapped into a double play [Music] when you know Johnny Brito has got his good change out but he throws it down and into right-handed batters and they bang it up their foot [Music] out in front and straight down [Applause] 2-1 [Applause] -2 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] swing and a miss Guerrero down on strikes [Music] excellent breaking ball from Johnny Brito which is his third best pitch but he's throwing some good ones tonight looks like he limped after finding that ball off his knee didn't feel good putting pressure on it yes indeed he is walking gingerly back to the dugout was outside [Applause] one and one [Applause] I think he's trying to break the Blue Jays three-game winning streak they won six of their last eight as well [Applause] hi Papa who's going to get it flavor Torres makes a play and an easy one two three inning for Johnny Brito and the Yankees Blue Jays go down in order we go to the eighth [Music] news calls the New York Liberty the wnba's new super team and yes is your home for all the action opening weekend coverage begins this Friday at 7 on my nine and the home opener is Sunday at 1 30 on yes both games can be streamed live on the yes app it's a great name right the Liberty this is perfect fit for New York and it's going to be a great team three Superstars Hyundai scoreboard six nothing and Yankees lead as we go to the top of the eighth inning I think he scored three runs in the top of the first inning they've never looked back so Jay Jackson comes on third pitcher this will be his third game Hicks Bowers and judge [Applause] and a strike Jay Jackson's 35 years old fifth Big League season signed a minor league deal with the Jason march called up May 5th when Zach pop one on the IL with a right hamstring strain [Applause] here's some of the uh the Journey of Jay Jackson Cubs Marlins Pirates Brewers Padres Hiroshima carp in Japan back to the Brewers back to Japan with the Chiba latte Marines Reds Giants Braves and now the Blue Jays Hicks down on strikes [Music] he's definitely multilingual then right probably three languages [Music] one of you has every uniform from every team because they don't give you the uniform right all the time they used to not give them to you nowadays it's a little more lenient I still shake my head at the story the Mets gave you one and then you left it in an apartment somebody has it now I had to buy it back from the guy [Applause] you have a Yankee 36 somewhere in the house yes okay good [Applause] do you have the perfect game uniforms I gave that to the Hall of Fame cool don't say no to them they want it they got it [Applause] so I went to David wells's birthday party the other night in New York 60th birthday and he told me his perfect game glove from 1998 25 years ago is worth 300 Grand who has it he still has it really he had a priced I don't know how or he had it appraised [Applause] baseball memorabilia it's kind of like artwork is what are you willing to pay you know but do you have your gloves I'm just uh I'm pulling my hair out so I saw David at the Yankee welcome home dinner the night after you went out with him for his birthday and he was he was feeling it yes he said I know I'm 60 years old he said because I did more the night before I threw the perfect game than I did last night but I feel much worse today I believe it I was there I saw it [Applause] three and two were you there the night before the perfect game I was not okay David with the blue jays and then right when he pitched the perfect game [Applause] three two Chapman gives it a look out of play and there you are with both uniforms you won one World Series at the uh the Jays and then four with the X 1992 here in Toronto in this ballpark was the place to be [Applause] swing and a miss Jackson wins that battle this copyrighted telecast presented by authority of the New York Yankees it may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent off the New York Yankees [Applause] here's judge perfect night home run three walks two RBIs one of walks intentional and there's a strike [Applause] you mentioned Jackson's Journey this has got to be a great feeling for him to face Aaron judge right here and perseverance paying off [Applause] one and one [Applause] [Applause] and two [Applause] he's 35 years old with that resume that you read you're not gonna be scared and all of a sudden this has been building up [Applause] he's saying the ball is that low and you're calling it a strike us so Clint bondrak hearing it from Aaron Boone [Applause] he certainly let him have a say got his money's worth and the crew chief James Hoy is trying to walk him back fires the gum [Applause] now this is the pits that he got thrown out on you can see judge wasn't happy with it and you can see why [Applause] some umpires have a quicker hook than others some of them you can chirp at a little bit and they'll let you go a little bit but Von drock is not one of those guys you say one thing to him we've seen him on both sides looking to Dugout quickly [Applause] didn't you tell us that Boone and uh and Phil Nevin have a bet on who's going to get thrown out more when I spoke to them both for That interview for the VP takeover show I you know I asked him what's something you don't know about each other and Aaron Boone said he may not seem like it but he's a bit of a softy and Aaron said I'll probably wind up getting thrown out more than than he does it might be right 2-2 three and two let's see the gum form what do you think about the delivery sidearm yeah yeah good spin rate [Applause] can't wait to ask him about that after the game David deep Drive center field there it goes a monster shot oh the batter's eye a solo home run for judge and the Yankees lead seven nothing foreign goodness gracious [Music] [Applause] I admire Jackson he was going to go after judge he's not going to walk him he's 35 years old he's been around the block left the breaking ball up there's a strike Rizzo doesn't like that call it's hard to describe how far this really is you can see care Meyer and Centerfield just looking up where that landed up there that guy did not expect to get a ball 462 feet 30th career multi-home Run game second and three games oh and two oh he's starting to feel it sometimes you just watch him hit a baseball and you're just awestruck right where it ends up where it lands [Applause] back [Applause] he's good almost 115 miles an hour off the bat 462 feet well there's the ballpark we're in his 61st home run last year he has two tonight numbers nine and ten we'll see if Chapman can get there he's in foul territory and makes the play and that'll do it but the Yankees get a run one hit nobody left the one hit was really hit 462-foot flight into the second deck seven nothing Yanks [Applause] [Music] Matt Chapman takes inside from Johnny burrito Yankees lead seven nothing a 462-foot home run by Aaron judge in the top of the eighth inning grounded Fair shot the side wall praying it out there as Bowers and Chapman with a lead-off double well from up here that did not look Fair let's see from this angle [Music] I don't think that was fair wow complete judgment call that it went over the bag or caught just a sliver of the bag when it went over John lipka is the third base up [Applause] 1-0 to Merrifield [Applause] 18th double of the year for Matt Chapman that leads all a Major League Baseball that one is looped into left center field it's a base hit Chapman will score Merrifield with an RBI single the Blue Jays on the board at 7-1 [Music] [Applause] I see that fastball running in on with Maryfield he just fights It Off gets enough of it to get it to the Outfield to get an RBI [Music] that gets a trip from Anthony Rizzo and the rest of the infield and Hamilton beginning to throw [Music] Johnny burritos pitch counts in good shape here with just 16 pitches thrown but [Music] he and Hamilton's gonna back him up if needed Brandon Belt takes High [Applause] see if they turn two they don't get any labor didn't handle it so it'll be an E4 he's trying to shovel it with the glove to Volpe didn't work out [Music] another look you can see he tries to go with his hand and just does not get the handle [Music] bumpy tries to save it but no time left yeah he didn't do it with it I thought he was trying with the glove but it was with the hand and they lost control never got the handle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's a good visit here just to kind of settle burrito down but also give Hamilton time to get loose foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] ball down the line double a jam shot for the base hit and a double play ball that should have been right there so the stuff is still good so here's Kirk as the Blue Jays trying to lead rally [Applause] and there's the strike ground ball and grab there by Taurus from his knees fires to First and they get Kirk beautiful play by Torres as the runners move up [Applause] [Music] Redeemer play for Claver bobbled the potential double play and makes a Dandy play there with the slow running Kirk [Applause] second and third one out here's kiermeyer and a strike seven eight and one for the Yanks one five and oh for the Blue Jays [Applause] [Music] and the pitch jumped up and hit him foul one and two on Kiermaier [Applause] [Music] the first adversity that Brito has faced tonight reacting very well still throwing good pitches foul back still one and two [Music] more has always been a plus plus plus Defender hasn't been the best hitter but he's doing a good job this year came in hitting 311 he's one for two tonight [Applause] foul back the good one-two punch here for Johnny burrito in terms of the left-handed approach four seamers up up and in and change UPS down you get a change up down and out of the Zone see if you can get a swing and a miss here nice block there by hit gashioka foreign [Applause] good thought just a little too low and five of the third Innings tonight is a career high coming in on top of Cordero as the opener tap slowly in front of the plate Merrifield holds the throw not in time good pick there by Rizzo saved a run and the bases are loaded [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you good pitch but you got to come get it just bobbles it can't get the handle on it Kiermaier can fly but you can see right there it just never gonna get us a good handle on it at that point you got your whole hand on the ball [Music] it's gonna do it for burrito Carlos Mendoza takes the ball will signal for Hamilton the dangerous Springer coming up with the bases loaded [Applause] [Music] Yankee Stadium on Friday May 26th when the Yankees play the Padres the first 18 000 guests 21 and over are going to receive a Yankee short sleeve hoodie courtesy of Budweiser gets your tickets today yankees.com [Music] the Johnny brino did a pretty good job now it's up to Hamilton to get out of trouble with the bases loaded and one man out it's 7-1 Yankees bottom of the eighth inning oh Ian Hamilton's been a great story for the Yankees this year clearly in the circle of trust now Springer takes low 1-0 Bases Loaded one out there's a strike gets the call on the pitch might have been out the side just a bit one-on-one perfectly thrown right there on the edge bottom left corner pushes the envelope misses two and one [Applause] three and one there's no place to put Springer and buchettes on Deck ground ball is short there's one on to First not in time run scores so Springer beat the return thrill he'll get an RBI and now the Yankee lead is five runs seven to two [Music] I didn't think there's any chance but a really good turn to make this representative this ringer runs fairly well wasn't hit that hard vulping with a great feed to Claver and glaber turns it Springer beats it now first and third two outs and here's bichette one for three tonight we're in the bottom of the eighth inning Yankees seven to two [Applause] Rizzo was playing behind Springer then rushed in to hold him on can't just give him second base [Applause] Owen Juan [Applause] waves at that one oh and two Wicked pitches back to back got a phone booth swing here for buchette shows you the quality of the stuff punched out toward right field on the runners judge it's going to dunk in there for Bay City one run score Springer's going to third he's going to stop there the shed stops at first with an RBI single and it's 7-3 the Yankees [Music] same pitch he threw the first two this one stays up The Shed off the end of the bat flares it in just fair [Music] well in the game where the eggs didn't seem like they were going to break a sweat well they're sweating right now they're once ring away the Blue Jays off for making this a one-run game first and third two men out and here's Guerrero at the plate against Hamilton line drive it is a base hit to left field Springer scores going to third the throw to third now in time and that allows Guerrero to go to second that was not the throw to make oh you're exactly right first and foremost the fastball in I mean what an incredible swing on a pitch that's way inside on the super shot breaks his Bat but that shows you the type of skill set that Guerrero Jr has to be able to get a knock out of that and you're exactly right on the back end Bowers has got to throw to second base there keep Guerrero Jr at first well that's gonna do it for Hamilton Mendoza goes to the bullpen second and third two men out Kings coming on Yankees up by three drives in a run and he hit the ball twice if you watch on super shot just incredible I mean breaks his Bat and then off the end of the bat for the second time the pitch was on his belt buckle he wiped it clean [Music] ends up on second base [Music] and now the tongue runs at the plate Dalton varsho against Michael King [Applause] and a strike seven nothing going into the bottom of the eighth now it's seven four second and third two outs foreign grounded to First Rizzo's there and King allows the Yankees to breed the sigh of relief the Blue Jays leave two they score four and seven four as we go to the ninth [Music] Blue Jays here at Roger Center coverage begins at six with Audi batting practice in the pregame then we're back with a call on yes and streaming live on the yes app so the Blue Jays with four runs there in the bottom of the eighth and now to make excuses for anybody because the Blue Jays got their hits but that error by Clay for Torres Loom very very large that's a double playground ball that he booted and kind of opened the gates a little bit more that's Jimmy Garcia will take over for Toronto Johnny burrito is a little unlucky there some soft contact they fell in and defense let him down [Applause] so Garcia takes over fourth pitcher used by John Schneider and labor Torres leads off and a strike on the outside corner all in one [Applause] check swing 1-1 [Applause] you know the way a game unfolds all the games are interconnected so this looked like it was going to be a cakewalk maybe Johnny burrito pitches the final seven Innings but now you viewed Hamilton and you've used king and the Yankee Bullpen has really been stretched to its limit because they are not getting a lot of length out of most of their starters so you know even if they win this game now you've used two of your high-end relievers in this one how available will they be for the next three games it's an excellent point I mean the Yankees had visions of Johnny Brito finishing this game out when it was seven to nothing and he was cruising with 60 pitches in the eighth inning [Applause] right back up the middle and it's grabbed there by Merrifield to throw the first they get clever Torres one away [Music] here's Willie Calhoun big blow in the first inning a two-run home run off of Alec Manoa Manoa pitched into the six and had a career-high seven walks in this game strike from Garcia [Applause] rip foul you want to look ahead to the bottom of the night it'll be king on the mound and it'll be Chapman Merrifield and belt five six and seven in the Blue Jays order [Applause] one and two [Applause] swing and a miss Calhoun down on strikes two down [Music] this is how you throw a slider down and into a lefty the back foot slider if you try to get a swing and a miss perfectly executed by Garcia that'll bring up Volpe a Volpe with a double in four bats last time up lined out sharply to Chapman at third [Applause] and a strike on one [Applause] he goes around Owen two [Applause] missed outside one and two on Volbeat [Applause] and the pitch up the middle field Fields fires High not in time belt off the bag and by the time he got back to the back Volpe had reached we'll see how they score that ball hit off the mound took some of the steam out of it you can see Maryfield kind of slipped on his back leg there trying to plant and throw Volpe hustling the whole way and murfield's given an error [Music] obviously Volpe is a threat to run [Applause] 13 for 13 in stolen bases most stolen bases in The Bigs without being thrown out [Applause] 1-0 [Applause] chasing Volpe back everything's about Instinct and timing with Anthony Volpe and his base running particularly from first base trying to steal second well he was leaning a little distract because belt does not hold on right on the bag he's leading with Volpe that's two throws over so Volpe now has a little bit more leverage yeah he had that one timed if Garcia went home and he did not so a nice recovery from Anthony Volpe to get back [Applause] will Garcia go over three times and take a chance 2-0 [Applause] 3-0 you could see that Volpe at first distracts the pitcher and that might impact the way you pitch to the batter it's no doubt about it every time he's on base he's a distraction [Applause] and there's a walk enough of a distraction that he walked Cabrera who's walked three times tonight [Applause] all four runs scored in the eighth inning are charts to Brito two of them are earned so good performance vibrito yeah he was solid against a really good hitting club as well here's higashioka give the Yankees some breathing room for the ninth inning and a strike from Garcia now pitching in this ballpark against this lineup is a really significant test for any pitcher [Applause] way outside 1-1 [Applause] Volpe at second cabrer at first [Applause] lined down one hop to Merrifield he gets the force at second and that will do it no runs no hits one error and two men left on base bottom of the ninth coming up Yankees lead by three [Music] a lot for tonight's WB Mason Yankees post game and get highlights analysis and player reaction from the clubhouse plus Aaron Boone on the manager's report that's all coming up next on yes and the yes [Music] so Aaron Hicks moves to left taking over for Bowers and Bader comes in in center field for the final three outs you know now with a three-run lead Vader is needed Pittsford Chapman is outside 1-0 [Applause] grounded to Volpe one away [Applause] [Music] so one down that brings up Merrifield [Music] merfield RBI his last time up also scored a run he's one for three [Applause] and there's a sweeper that Whispers across the outside corner for a strike [Applause] outside 101. each team with eight hits each team with an arrow the Yankees lead seven four Yankees have left 10 men on base the Blue Jays three Volpe gets another ground ball gets a nice hop gets Merrifield and the Blue Jays are down to their final out [Music] so there's Brandon Belt a bunt single push punt toward third in the third fouled out to Third and then reached on the E4 that was a tailor-made double play but labor could not get the throwout that was in the eighth inning kind of opened the gates a bit pitch up and away 1-0 from King came on to get the final out got varsho to ground to First with Runners on second and third he'll get the save if he gets this final out [Applause] 2-0 [Applause] strike on the outside corner two and one on varsho it's still a lot of quality pitches from the Yankees pitcher staff pitching staff tonight check that belt count two and one top to bottom really now two and two even the eighth inning where they gave up four runs there were still good pitches of that inning just a little bit of unfortunate play and self-contact have found holes two balls two strikes two outs started off with Cordero who got him off to a good start with the opener strategy king deals grounded to First this should do it flips the king and the Yankees win seven to four so they're open to strategy Works two home runs by that guy one 462 feet and the Yankees take the first game of this four game set 7-4 yeah on both ends obviously the opener strategy Cordero was great for two innings burrito was fantastic following him up and offensively the left-handed lineup worked as well Willie Calhoun a big two-run home run in the first inning burrito got the win Michael King got to save Alec Manoa his fourth loss two more home runs for judge we'll come back [Music]
