i can honestly say that i feel like you can be a maximalist while still living in a minimalist mindset you're probably thinking whoa but here's my take on it i feel like a lot of us have heard about minimalism but did you know that there's another trend called maximalism today i'm gonna dive into minimalism and maximalism and really dive into the difference of the two styles hi guys it's annie from interior design hub back again today with another design video i'm so excited to go over this one with you guys because i feel like minimalism has been hot hot hot and one of my favorite youtubers matt devalia really goes into minimalism and embracing the minimalist life he's even done a netflix documentary on it and i feel like we all know about minimalism but i'm still gonna dive into what minimalism is but i'm gonna also dive into maximalism and i feel like you probably have this crazy idea of like hoarders it's not hoarders i swear to god it's not just being a hoarder maximalism is a design style and maximalism is not just hoarding all of the stuff but it's a very different look than minimalism so we're going to separate the two of them what is minimalism minimalism can also be known as like a modern design style i feel like you can probably visualize in your head but it's a very clean space bare essentials not a lot of clutter very clean you can really characterize this by you know the monochromatic color palette just simplicity in general and obviously clean lines and not a lot of ornate details the key with minimalism is less is more i think with the biggest confusion between minimalism and maximalism is that people have this sense of maximalism is just a lot of stuff although maximalism embraces some excess it's not hoarding and there is a very fine line and in order to truly embrace maximalism what you're really looking at is maximalism really promotes the use of repetition of pattern of bold color palettes use of graphic details and embracing one-of-a-kind possessions i would say while minimalism is really quiet maximalism is a lot louder a big part of maximalism is is actually using your space in a bold way and really making a statement with your space and actually really expressing yourself through design when designing with maximalism in mind is you're actually really trying to curate your space to fit your personality so instead of trying to tuck away the clutter what you're trying to do is curate a design style that speaks to you and who you are as a person from a design style that you might be familiar with you can think of the boho style or the traditional style or even the grand millennial style that really encompasses what maximalism is it's about realizing that as people we're not just one thing we're not simple we're creative we're outgoing we're inspiring we're we have very you know uh we have a broad variety of interests and hobbies and variants to our personality that make us who we are and i feel like maximalism the key to maximalism is highlighting that when you're designing for minimalism you're looking at you know an open floor plan lots of light and very minimal adornments in your space and it's very hard in a minimalist design style to really capture that personal touch and that's intentional for some people some people love that style and that's very much a difference between minimalism and maximalism is that with minimalism it's more quiet calm clean and and timeless absolutely very timeless and a a big part of minimalism that makes it beautiful is that you're finding substance in the simplicity of it you're really not over designing and i feel you know with minimalism we're really looking at form and function in the space and providing just what's needed whereas when you're looking at maximalism you're not just looking at form and function you're looking at form and function and design and layering and personality and the story and there's so much more to it i mean just explaining maximalism versus minimalism is a mouthful there's already so much more to it that it's like it takes a lot more to explain it so in a maximalist space some of the key characteristics when you're designing this way is you know you want to think about layering you want to think about bringing in patterns you want to bring in rich bold colors bring in statement pieces pieces that are from travels or that you found at an antique shop or just something really cool that you found online like you know young friends when they had that big dog like that's a statement piece joey's little dog sculpture if you haven't watched friends anyways moving on another thing is you know mixing and matching of textiles and colors where you know you would never do that in minimalism it just wouldn't really fit also the use of books now this is where i definitely fall into maximalism over minimalism because i love my books and my books are pretty much a big part of my design style and trust me maximalism and lover of books they they go hand in hand one of the things with minimalism from an architectural standpoint that i do love is how it really embraces the architectural beauty of the space and i feel like because you have less in your space when you have a really interesting or unique architectural detail it becomes highlighted in a minimalist design style which is absolutely beautiful and i definitely can appreciate that when you're looking at maximalism i definitely feel that the focus is more on the stuff versus the architecture that's not a negative it's just your attention that you're drawing to your space when it's minimalism versus maximalism in maxilla in maximalism you're looking more at the decor and of the feeling that's created within the space and in minimalism you're focusing more on the form and function and beauty of the actual space if that makes sense one of the other core differences between minimalism and maximalism is the use of color in a minimalistic space you're gonna use less color it's more tone on tone monochromatic and a much more neutral color palette with maybe a small splash of color in there just to add that little pop but typically you don't use a ton of color in that space whereas maximalism although lots of bold colors can be part of it it can still be more of a quiet backdrop with added layers and textures of color it doesn't necessarily have to be like big bold crazy wall color but it definitely is adding in more color throughout there's definitely a lot more layering of colors and patterns versus the minimalist style which will try to keep everything within that kind of core neutral feel so there's a very big juxtaposition with how you use color what's interesting though is with minimalism and maximalism you could actually start with the same kind of neutral backdrop like let's say you did your walls in avalon which is a really great neutral by benjamin moore i've used it a lot but you could have that exact same room designed two completely different ways and feel completely different just with the use of colors and accents and furniture and throws and decor and artwork and all of that stuff that make it go from minimalism to maximalism and just look nothing the same even with the exact same wall color and the exact same room it's one of those things where it really is what you layer into the space that really define the look of the space and like i said with minimalism you're obviously not going to be bringing in a ton of stuff because that goes against what minimalism is at its core it doesn't mean you don't have anything it just means that it's more curated it's more clean it's more simple it's really supposed to be more about function and maximalism is more about creativity and design and storytelling the most interesting thing with minimalism and maximalism is just that they're so different but i feel like maximalism has really come out of the need to get away from minimalism and there is i can honestly say that i feel like you can be a maximalist while still living in a minimalist mindset you're probably thinking whoa but here's my take on it i haven't purchased a new item for my house in a very long time i mean i have bought a few things like curtains i think which are needed because i bought a new house and i absolutely needed curtains that actually like covered my windows bigger windows bigger curtains but from a i feel like just because you have items in your home and it's not pared down to a minimalist standard aesthetically doesn't mean you don't have to live a minimalist in i i would say um belief system and why why i want to highlight that before we close out this video i feel like if you've collected things over the years and you every item is something that's been whether it's handed down or given to you or repurposed you can have a space that has a lot more stuff in it without being somebody that's going out and buying stuff all the time i feel like minimalism has gone a little bit far for some people in the feeling that they that they want to live with that mindset of like less and more authentically in life and not spending money on frivolous things but i don't think that means you can't have a home that is more falling into that maximalist style and i feel like if you've curated items over time if you've had your home for a long time if you've built a family if you've inherited pieces from family you can end up having a lot of stuff one of my favorite things are books i buy books i still as much as i love my the audible i do use audible i think it's great i also you know love podcasts and all these things but nothing beats for me personally a good book and i have hundreds of books like my dream is to have a library like i just love a book i love a book i love opening the book i'm gonna i'm getting too much into my love of books i love books that being said i feel like that doesn't make me any less of like a minimalist minimalist on the inside i just don't live in a minimalist house do you know what i mean so i feel like i want to take away some of that myth that you have to live with nothing in order to be a minimalist or you have to have you know if you have a lot of stuff you can't also have minimalist mindset or vice versa i mean you don't have to have either of them this is just me kind of like going between the two design styles and being that there's a blend of thought process on both of them and it really does have to tailor to what you like and i know a lot of people that just hate stuff they don't like the look of it they don't want it anywhere they just want everything clean and maybe their cupboards are full of things i don't know but they definitely have an aesthetic that they lean towards it's more modern or minimalist and i love it i think it's beautiful if that's who you are but i also feel like we've gone so far that way that we don't talk about maximalism in this right way which is not hoarding which is just embracing the beautiful things that you've curated about your personality and that you can express yourself boldly and vibrantly and love everything that you have and display it in a beautiful way that doesn't take away from a design sense and that you can still have a beautiful curated design even with a maximalist style so that's my take on minimalism versus maximalism i don't think one is better than the other it's really a personal preference i personally am a maximalist and i love it and i'm proud all right i am proud to be a maximalist all right guys if you're enjoying this content please consider subscribing to my channel hit that thumbs up button i
