How to bring Sustainable Interior Design into your home! // Sustainable Living

hi guys it's anya from interior design hub back again today with another video and today we are talking about eco style i feel like we have been hearing about and talking about sustainable design and beautiful you know plants and biophilia and i feel like we really need to talk about like eco design style and i know there's like well isn't that just boho but i feel like boho is more of a look and more of like a trend but eco style is more of a way of being and i feel like i don't know if you've ever watched but there's this youtuber levi and he does these great i'll link it below these great videos on how to be sustainable and how to live in a sustainable way and he really did inspire this video because i feel like interior design is also a way to be really earth friendly but just because you're earth friendly doesn't mean you have no style so eco style is what i feel like is the design trend if you want to call it but it's not a trend it should be forever and it doesn't matter what style or what trend you are you know into you could incorporate eco style and today i want to go over how you can be an eco style connoisseur alright let's dive in so i feel like it's without saying and probably if you've watched any number of my videos you're gonna know the very first thing with ecostyle is plants and i feel like if you've watched even a minute of any of my you know videos you're probably gonna see that this is the theme plants are beautiful no matter what style you have they're good for you they make you feel good just seeing plants make you feel good if you're wondering what the heck i'm talking about jump over after this to my biophilia video and i will kind of explain why that is and what biophilia is and why plants really do impact our life but from a design standpoint i call this ecostyle because having plants versus not having plants can really change the whole look of a space and it doesn't really matter what your design trend or your design style is when you put plants in it i feel like it just makes the space that much better and it really does come with this eco style because plants do so much good but they're also aesthetically pleasing and you can have a theme even with your plants like say you want certain colors and certain blooms and certain shapes and certain way of like bringing plants into your space you know whether you have lots of plants and it's like a greenhouse or you have very curated plants in certain places it really is its own style to itself of just the use of plant another thing with ecostyle is bringing in lots of natural light i think that's a really big element for any eco style space because you probably have lots of plants so you're going to need lots of light but that light and airiness as much as i love i love the arts and crafts style i find that's a very heavy style i think when you're in an eco style you just know how valuable natural light is and how good it is for us as humans to be exposed to as much natural light as possible there are so many studies around how you know in the working environment when people have access to more natural light they actually work better and you have less sick days and you just feel better there's something about natural light that is inherently pleasing to the body in every aspect so eco style equals natural light and lots of it so another thing when you're trying to do a sustainable home or eco style is to avoid using products that emit vocs now this is in mostly like painting and i've talked about this i have a whole video on paint and eco-friendly paint sustainable paints and the reason why it's so important is that vocs are really harmful to your health so to have an eco-friendly home it really needs to be healthy for the people who live there and are spending a lot of time there because you're breathing you know vocs is something you breathe in and we don't want to breathe in bad stuff so limit your vocs and again there's no limitation on what you do for paint it's just choosing to use stuff that don't have vocs really help make sure that your environment is super environmentally friendly to you so when you're thinking about furniture materials for your space in an eco design style you really want to focus on natural materials so thinking about stuff like your flooring for example could be made out of you know an fsc wood or a reclaimed floor or a wool carpeting or you know adding in uh jute rugs or sizal rugs but everything that's really like a natural material that's sourced from nature from renewable resources you know or instead of using wood you use bamboo but on a more design decorating trend if you're just looking for finishes thinking about using furniture that is from natural materials as well so linens and you know cotton fillers and definitely looking at the construction of that piece of furniture if you're able to access that information and also looking at if possible sourcing if you're buying new you know with that cradle to cradle mentality and keeping it kind of you know as locally to where you're from as possible is always you know super awesome for the eco-friendly side but you know what if that's not really in the cards for you trying to find pieces that you can repurpose so if somebody is looking to sell something whether you're looking online or you're going to your local second-hand stores or you know antique store and finding pieces that you can you know bring into your home and use again that's awesome because it takes it from going into a landfill and it brings it and gives it another life so that's another way to really incorporate that eco style and again doesn't have to be a specific trend but you can plan any trend and still bring in eco style and with that natural materials and furniture also comes natural textiles and finishes as well so think again cottons and linens and using items that are derived from natural renewable resources into the fabrics and the finishes and accessories within your space and that's really how you achieve eco style and the best part the best part about doing an eco-friendly home is whatever trend you're gravitating towards or whatever you know if you just want to do a classic design style what's awesome about an eco style is it goes with every trend or non-trends so you can do this with
