minecraft it's been done in 3d it's been done in 2d but it hasn't been done in 1d so that's what i'm doing the challenge is to make 1d minecraft but here's the question what does a one-dimensional game look like normal people make either 2d games or 3d games but not 1d games in a 3d game you have the x y and z axes to work with in a 2d game there's the x and y axes but in one dimension i think i only have the x axis to use here's another way to think about it when you convert 3d to 2d you basically flatten the object to show a single plane so to convert 2d to 1d you'd flatten the 2d image to a single row of pixels my plan is i'll make a game where the window is one pixel high and i don't know 64 pixels across so that's what i'm doing here when i launch it i notice it is quite unplayable i can't even see what's going on so to make gameplay easier and for your viewing experience i incorporated a full screen function to you guessed it make the game full screen in this prototype i have here a simple player that moves in only one dimension let's call him i don't know steven which is a totally original name and not copying but the game's pretty boring right now and it wouldn't be minecraft without randomly generated blocks to mine [Music] okay i'm done plus side is you don't have to be talented at art to make 1d graphics literally this is my grass block a toddler is good enough for this what am i doing okay there's now six different blocks and they spawn randomly next to the player the player can't go through these blocks nor can they go above or below them which should make for some pretty interesting gameplay never mind this is boring already maybe mining will help [Music] yay mining i think minecraft has an inventory though mining blocks doesn't drop items or add items to your inventory so let's make that really easily oh wait i can't draw text or images making an inventory in 1d seems impossible but i have an idea that might work it involves using the draw gui event to draw a little hud on the left side of the screen here i'll tell you how it works when it's done okay it's done that didn't take very long mining a block drops an item and when you pick it up an inventory shows up with a brown square and a red square the brown square tells you which type of block you have and the red square on the right is colored differently depending on how many of that block you have a red square means i have one of that block orange means two yellow means three and so on by using the right mouse button i can of course place the block now i'm trapped summary of what's done so far there's a 1d player in a randomly generated world filled with blocks you can mine you can mine these blocks and collect the items which show up in a very scuffed inventory who am i kidding this looks nothing like minecraft it doesn't have any crafting yet yeah this is quite the challenge how am i even going to make crafting one-dimensional i've got an idea maybe if you press e you can open up an entire scene where you craft things then you place items in three separate slots to make something which will show up on the right to collect this shouldn't take too long okay i finally did it in case you're wondering it didn't actually take three hours to make the crafting i actually went down a youtube rabbit hole for two hours and i made a sandwich back to the game there's the crafting menu you place the selected inventory item in the box with the left click and you can make a few exquisite luxuries such as pickaxe sword or even bow pickaxe helps you mine faster sword helps you beat up enemies wait there aren't any enemies yet [Music] enemies come see the vast array of creatures you'll encounter in 1d minecraft they include zombie skeleton spider enderman and creeper now they spawn randomly on the surface good thing they don't deal damage yet and speaking of damage we need the player to have hearts but to make hearts we would need a 2d plane because if we had only one pixel of height to use then we really couldn't make them well i guess we can't make hearts so we'll have to suffice for a health bar on the right instead [Music] that was easy now the enemies deal damage and if the player dies it goes to a game over screen now the game is done right just add a few finishing touches and there's 1d minecraft there's a problem though this game is boring like really boring you mine in either direction forever until you get iron and then you craft a better pickaxe so you can make a diamond sword and kill everything easily i don't even know why i made placeable blocks that was like the most useless thing i made i guess that makes it so you can block off the enemies really easily and forever what i liked about minecraft was exploration going and finding new things right so i scrapped the overworld i have now and made a much cooler one with better looking trees and caves you can enter yeah that's a tree going into a cave takes you to an entirely different scene where you'll find randomly generated blocks monsters and exits i also included randomly placed animals and when i say animals i mean pigs only pigs they give you pork chops which instantly heal you that's totally spectacular but this game is missing a key element and that's the ending that's right we need to add the ender dragon in 1d in the caverns i had an end portal that's guarded by some powerful enemies it takes you to the end where there's the ender dragon that's the ender dragon knock out the healing towers and beat them up and you win so that's the game it was a lot harder than i thought to make not because of the art or the programming but the game design restricting myself to 1d was indeed a game design challenge if you want to play this super scuffed game which i don't even know why you would there's a link to the ichio page in the description a word of warning this game is really confusing i can't display any controls or help in game obviously so i've made this graphic to explain the inner workings of the game anyways i hope you relished this video and perhaps you learned something or had some fun thank you so much for watching
