[Music] Welcome! In today's episode we'll talk about how to connect your midi controllers and midi keyboards to Logic Pro. There's obviously a sea of different models and different price ranges but for the sake of this tutorial we're going to use one of the more commonly used midi controllers, and that is the Arturia KeyStep 37. This episode is part of the Logic Pro for beginners course. If you're serious about learning Logic Pro in depth I highly recommend you to enroll my course at the store.morningdewmedia.com. Let's continue! If you're connecting the MIDI controller to MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air it's a big chance it's going to feature the Thunderbolt ports. And the MIDI controller and midi keyboards you buy probably comes with this USB type-A connector, and you need some kind of adapter to connect these two together. To connect these we can use the simple USB type A to USB C adapter. While this setup works just fine, I do recommend that you grab a USB hub with much more ports. In my studio, with the M1 Max MacBook Pro, I'm using two different USB hubs that gives me up to 8 different USB type-A ports. Right, so when you connect new midi controllers and new midi keyboards I do recommend that you open the launch pad and open the "others" folder and run the Audio Midi Setup application. If you go up to the window menu you can select "Show Midi Studio", and in this application you can actually see if Mac OS finds your midi gear. So if I turn on the Keystep 37 we can clearly see that Mac OS has found Arturia Key Step 37 because it lights up. If you for some reason can't find your MIDI controller in the midi Studio, it might be a faulty USB cable, it might be a faulty USB port... or maybe just a faulty product. Then you should consider contacting the support for your specific product. Right, so when you're troubleshooting your midi gear it's very important to first check this Audio Midi Setup Application to see if your midi gear appears, because if they don't appear in this Midi Studio page, they won't appear in any other OS X applications, like Logic Pro or other music applications. So first check with the MIDI Studio here. The same thing goes for your audio interface. You can actually press the window tab up here and show all your devices. And in the audio devices page we can actually see all the audio interfaces and virtual audio devices connected in MacOS. Right, we've successfully verified that our Mac found our MIDI controller. Now we can open Logic Pro and if we start a new project, this shows "choose a track type" and for this sample we will select the Sampler , a stereo multi-sample sampler. And press CREATE to create a new track. We get a new project with a new track with the sampler. At the leftmost side we have the library tab with all the sounds that's installed with Logic Pro. We can expand the factory headline and go into the acoustic pianos and select the Steinway piano too. [Mellow Piano music] So as you can see Logic Pro is now receiving MIDI data from our MIDI controller. And if you press a few keys on your MIDI controller you can see a small dot appear, which shows that logic pro is receiving MIDI data. And as we talked about in an earlier episode you should press this little arrow and choose the custom toolbar, which gives you a little bit more information. So now we can clearly see the midi input. By default all the midi tracks in Logic Pro receives from all your midi gear. So if you have a big studio with multiple keyboards it's a good idea to go into the inspector panel of the track. The Track Inspector panel, and expand the track inspection. the Track Inspector And if we look at the midi import headline we can see it says "all", that means it's receiving metadata from all your devices. But here we can also specify "specifically" to only receive midi from the Arturia KeyStep 37. But as I mentioned by default this is set to "all", and that's basically just a good idea so you don't have to do this selection specifically for all your midi tracks. So we create another instrument track. We select "new software instrument track" and on this track let's select the "Chinese traditional" the Guzheng instrument [Music] Press the piano track. It's also possible to record arm multiple tracks, just activate the red recording button for all the tracks that you want to record at the same time. And they will all receive MIDI data from your MIDI controller. [Piano + Guzheng layered sound.]
