today's video guys i'm going to spray a metal flake job it's on three parts uh pretty much a sporty type set small front fender uh aftermarket longer fender peanut tank so we'll be doing a metal flake job uh in a previous metal flake video be sure and check that out uh i took it from the point of after i sprayed the metal flake to clear coating it and i gave you some tips along the way this time i'm going to show you the mixing it and then taking it out there and spraying i'll be wearing a gopro so just to give you an idea what it's supposed to look like on each coat and how i mix the flake so today i will be spraying the f 22-2 house of color f-22 flake it's called uh royal blue and it does appear to be a newer version which i assume is what the dash 2 means so i compared it to the original and as you can see i didn't have enough of the original so i bought some new stuff and as you can see it's just a little more violet than the previous f-22 flake so be sure and check out that video uh it's of a red saddlebag set that i did so what i'm going to do i use color blender medallion mrt dash 500. i used to use sg-100 but it just got too costly this is fairly inexpensive to buy it by the gallons you can use whatever you want if you're just doing a single job you don't a pint would be plenty uh if you only get three parts if you do a complete or you might want to get a quart so and then i'm using fast reducer i always use fast reducer so that way i can just keep going coat after coat so like i said before i always spray my metal flake jobs outside and that way it just destroys a booth so i got in the habit of just praying outside but what i do is spray my base coat inside the booth and then i spray the metal flake outside bring it back in the spray booth and then i clear coat it so what i'm going to do is show you how to mix this or how i mix it put a good amount of flake in there i'm using a quart mixing cup okay now i take my color blender i don't use too much color blender what this basically does is hold the flake onto the part and gives it a little bit of body so let's go i'd say one to one pretty close to that now the reducer i use quite a bit you want to make sure you stir it up now when you're spraying and you run out and you come back for a new batch make sure you stir it up very good so if you don't this stuff settles very very quickly now the old days i used to use the bank seven to spray this i mean old days and then i switched to a uh jga the bilbus siphon fed gun siphon fed guns work great on metal flake with bigger tips you put a nut in the bottom you can shake it around hbo piece whole different animal once you put it in you have to be able to go i mean be ready have your parts all set up have them tacked off be ready to get spraying do not cite or do not filter this so some size flakes will not fit through a filter basically what you want to do as soon as you pour this grab the hose and get spraying so like i said no strainer i used a clean cup everything's clean there shouldn't be any any grime in here whatsoever so always wear your protective gear i got gloves i wear a jacket i wear a respirator i also wear a spray sock if you don't you're going to look like a christmas ornament after you spray metal flake so it's good to throw away your gloves good to throw away uh your jacket even if you do a lot of jobs like me like harley jobs and uh a black paint jobs you got a flake on your jacket and it comes off in that you're gonna have a nice little sparkle stand out and for some reason the customer always sees that so make sure you throw your gloves away the jacket away what i do is take a paint suit and then i just cut it and then i make it into a jacket so i like the elastic bands and the the heat uh you know it gets i get sweaty and you don't want it dripping all over your paint job so we're going to get going on this this should be plenty to do uh one set uh like i said i'll be wearing a gopro so bear with me i'll be wearing a respirator too so i've never done this as far as wearing a respirator and wearing the gopro so i hope you guys enjoy this again fast reducer is what i use mr185 you can use the reducer your choice mrt 500 great color blender this is house of color flake looks like it'd be uh very very nice doesn't look as big as it used to be the f flakes are supposed to be the biggest flakes of uh the house of color but they seem to be i would guess medium size so we're going to get going here i got the parts outside uh we're going to pour this in and we're going to get rolling so i hope you enjoy the video uh there'll be a couple segments i'll take one of me spraying with the uh gopro on and you pay attention to the coats i'm laying on and how heavy i'm putting them on which is not heavy at all and then i'll take another video after that showing you what it looked like uh you know after i'm completely done with the flake okay here we go get my pressure real low okay i'm gonna put my respirator on so you just have to watch you want to get this as a consistent as possible on all parts [Music] that's gonna be good enough for the [Music] bottom this is something you definitely don't want to run [Music] that isn't fair to fix get in the habit of doing your uh edges real good also keep in mind let me show you here okay when you go over the tank or a fender remember you can keep going like this or even like on the fender if you notice i went like this and then over and then i came back over here and started it again well you got to watch the top surfaces because you might be doubling up you probably will be so pay attention to that especially like the top of the tank okay we'll go back over here i like to use a black as a base because it gives the flake makes a flake pop more now if you don't have a lot of flake you can match a color that's close to it for a base coat i cover that but you won't have as much as you can see the sparkle it stands out real nice over black now also on the harley paint jobs they have a paint series called a hard candy if you notice it's real splotch not real splotchy but you could see black areas through here this customer wants mainly blue so we're going to apply probably about five coats on this dome let's see how close i'm holding the gun i don't have a lot of pressure you got a lot of pressure you're gonna be blowing flakes everywhere it's still messy enough at this lower pressure i really don't wait in between coats on this i got fast reducer plus like i said it's like 80 degrees out [Music] uh make sure you get your edges on your fenders if you're doing a small front front fender if you're doing a harley looking good so far may have to make up some more flake here a little bit so now if you stop with this flaking in the gun if you get a phone call to get or something like that really you shouldn't stop but if you have to you gotta turn the gun upside down that flake settles in the uh nozzle you're done it won't work out yeah i think we're done with this that definitely got a little brighter that's how we want it right there okay as you can see this is like a medium-sized flake now i don't know if that's why they put the two at the end because they downsized it because uh some some flakes you have to have a special gun i have an old school gun i bought about 15 years ago called flake buster i believe it was okay we just ran out we're gonna go back here see my suburban you're doing a frame off resto on this okay let's make up a little more also if you get a paint bench like mine you gotta make sure you change the paper once you're done too you want destroy pretty much any evidence of flake i do a lot of black jobs here since that's pretty much a most popular harley color a little more okay i gotta hurry because i got there's nothing in there but i'm sure there's a few flakes just laying in the nozzle there okay we gotta finish the tank don't forget where you are when you're doing this and if you run out of flake okay we're good give it one shot before you actually spray it on make sure it's not clogged or anything we're good while you're spraying you know just pay attention to make sure you got everything covered make sure you get corners bottoms lips okay i'm gonna put see this still looks good that's how we want it i'm gonna put one more coat on that should do it [Music] so okay i'm going to switch over to my phone and i'll give you a couple more tips on this i switched over to my phone here we'll go over each part once you're completely done doing the flake make sure you completely clean out your gun real good throw that jacket away if you wore a jacket your gloves of course i still got my gloves you can see if you didn't wear protective gear you would uh like i said before you look like a christmas ornament and that's not uh very cool if you got customers coming in and they're looking at you like uh you're sparkling uh one tip for you guys this one's just going this blue flake so let's say you're doing a candy job uh you plan on uh clear coating sanding and then uh putting the candy on what you can do to make it sparkle even more is use a couple different color flakes like on this one let's say i was going to put candy blue over it i'd use probably maybe 50 50 blue and silver that way you got light sparkle you got medium sparkle that will uh yeah like i said just make it more sparkle we'll take this out in the sun it's not clear coated but you can see how it looks how rough it is before it's clear coated so don't be uh alarmed if your paint job looks like this so as in the previous video i mentioned uh the every flake job i do i clear coat sand and either candy or re-clear it again so this one's just getting uh we'll clear it twice so it makes it nice and also as much you saw how much build up i just put on here it's just base coat there's no hardener in there excuse me so what you want to do is let this sit good i'm probably going to let this sit like an hour so like i said i do all my flake jobs outside here doesn't create a lot of overspray i keep my i keep my uh pressure down now what i'll do i sprayed the black in the booth and then i came out here sprayed the flake only it's early morning it's about 7 30. and then i will pull it back in the booth i'll do my clear coat we'll re-sand it tomorrow probably tomorrow and uh it's good to let it completely uh dry for sure set it out in the sun that helps speed up the process then i'll re-clear it again west santa buffett and we'll be good to go so hopefully you're liking this video i'll probably do one more segment showing the complete finished product after i clear coat it twice if you haven't already be sure and check out my other flake video it shows pretty much from the time i clear coat or i think i just did it after i flaked it and then i clear coated it so it's a red red metal flake job so be sure and check that out i did put a little bit of candy over that but the flake was already red so that helps speed up the process too so hope you like this video so thumbs up and please subscribe and more videos to come soon and probably one more segment on this one thanks for watching okay guys i just got done spraying the uh clear coat on all these parts so as you can see they came out awesome you can also see i could probably get away with wet sandal buffing these but what i'm going to do is uh like i mentioned 600 thousand grit width and then we're going to clear coating so no candy in between the clear and the sand job so but you can see how good they came out so a couple of things to mention this will be actually my last segment so i told you i'd show you at the very end i'll show this part a couple more tips for you uh let's say when you re-sand in these we aren't going to candy these so let's say the next clear is going to be our last clear so let's say you're a prep guy or you sand through an edge or something those flakes are going to start turning silver on you don't go ahead and spray some more flake on there what you want to do is grab the color that's close to it and candy like in my case would be like oriental blue and just dust a little in that area and that will turn that blue so kind of blend that candy out don't concentrate on that one area you actually want to catch it up and then blend bigger and bigger so if it changes the color too much you're gonna have to re-coat all three parts so keep an eye on your sanding you don't have to sand it completely flat but you do want to knock all the nibs down all the flakes that are standing up and get it nice and flat so and also in the previous segment i mentioned that you could candy over the uh if you wanted more sparkly to do might look like a darker flake so for those who have never sprayed candy let's say i sprayed this with blue and silver flake and sanded it flat now i'm ready for the candy once i can do that the silver flakes will become brighter blue and then the darker flakes will become a medium blue that's how you're going to achieve those different flakes or different sparkles so it's a real nice effect to mix those when you can't hit so i just want to further uh detail tell you how i explained to you for those who have a candy before of how that would work with the two different flakes on it so and also let's say on one of these parts on this particular job let's say you get a big white speck in there for one you can pick it out if you want to but let's say a bug flies in there or something like that or you get a big white speck what you can do is i mix up some some of the clear and i put a lot of flake in there and then stir that up real good because the flake will settle real quick take a corner or you could use a touch-up brush and let me show you what this does come over here let's say you got a big white speck or you sand through the very very corner of like the tank let's say like right here you sand through you don't want to you don't have the candy or whatever what you could do mix up your special clear and dab it like this just you want probably 70 percent flake and just keep building it up now this works great this is the regular clear top coat it works even better with base coat clear because it dries so quick you can build it up real quick so and also i mentioned in the previous segment to watch my other video the red metal plate be sure to watch that because that has a lot of tips too between this video and that video you should learn quite a bit there's different uh different steps that i show and you know both of them have pretty much all the steps that it would take to do yourself a nice sparkling metal plate job so anyway this is it for this video i hope you guys liked it and learned some more metal flake tips so i've done a ton of these metal flick uh jobs uh that both candy bigger blades smaller flakes brighter big faces black faces most of the time i use the black face like i mentioned it's fun to do it looks dazzling i hope you guys enjoyed this video thumbs up subscribe and more videos coming thank you
