now it's time for the men's cobol final shouting in Moscow six years ago still going strong at the tender age of 30 Rafael whole-step of the German from Sweden the one of the favorites twice he's gone over 6 meters this year European champion mondo Duplantis pole-vaulting is in his blood 6:03 de sky produced in Rio to take the Olympic title back from injuries back with his own coach his old coach Thiago Braz desilva's in form to 602 this year piata leasing and he's just become a father as well busy few months 2nd Brazilian in the lineup pan american silver or gusto Dutra he has beaten his great rival and friend Tiago brass to silver this season China the 2016 Asian Indoor champion from China won their trials ba Chi Quang now Judy 20 rolled European under-23 champion folk and Alicia bear and Anita better he's a real character second German teammates and Raphael whole stepper of course on the USA 606 the favorite the outstanding man this year Sam Kendricks the defending champion Olympic bronze medalist he's barely put a pole wrong in 2099 years since Claudio Michel statue took his world junior silver 580 indoors this season two years ago he won the European under-23 title and as the world student games bronze medalist this year been Broder's sounds like the name of a film star we have representations from the French level any family not Renault he didn't make it but his little brother Valentin did [Applause] and what a breakthrough season in Spain but this has to be talented and charismatic American call Walsh never been on the Diamond League until this year third in Oslo third in Jurek second in the US champs behind Sam Kendricks and this could be one of the great field event finals of the week three men on top of their game and plenty of others who have what it takes to literally rise to the occasion when it's needed yeah this promises to be a great one has been so much build-up to this men's horrible event I think it may be a three-way battle between monday Duplantis PR liesecke and Sam Kendricks but it's so unpredictable this event of course we had a cracker in the women's equivalent a few evenings ago and it's Ralph Collins Etta to start off proceedings whole step has been around a while very easygoing character I once worked at an outdoor event with him and he was very gracious and very easy to work with and the tattoo from Beijing all the indication you need that he has been around for more than a decade certainly a man who can get himself in the mix if it all clicks for him well champion back in Moscow hot sticky conditions there in Russia and silver medalist in the London Olympic Games right then 555 for the German miles clear could have got a hippo between him and the bar [Applause] first jump perfect circle a nice early settler for whole step yeah it's about settling into these jumps seeing him start then he starts some real gusto sometimes some of the athletes really builds the momentum during the runway phase but not hulls effort he went in naught to 60 straightaway mando Duplantis has skipped 555 so we moved down to the reigning Olympic champion that final between here in Renault la villa knee was one of the all-time great moments nothing else was going on in the stadium at that time no he just took off a little too early and brushed it on the way up I think it was incredible everybody thought the villany was going to win I've never seen a better example of a crowd almost lifting someone in his case literally to new heights 603 to beat one of the all-time greats Renault la villainy I'm glad to see him coming back to some kind of forum this year but he'll have to go again it just got a little bit wrong there with his plant one early failure for the Olympic champion and this is one of the favorites leasetech please medal that last two World Championships really experienced competitor and he's gone out to her personal best there's six meters and two centimeters this year he's second on the 2019 world list without 602 he's had a great season Jenny he won Lausanne and Monaco the last 10 as a former world class after that you'll appreciate this step over the last 10 Championships he has contested by the geographically regional or global he's never finished lower than four in ten championships over the last five years well that's quite some statistic isn't it consistency and experience should really serve him well here he was in the stadium a couple of nights ago watching the women's pole vault final quite a few of these men were the real funs of the event and they really stick together I think there's a huge appreciation of the sort of training and commitment it takes to be successful in this event so we're just waiting for the adjustments yeah the reason we have a delay is because Thiago Braz da Silva knocked the bar off and it's just taking the officials a little while to get back in place so that Lisa can get his self get himself up and over an opening height so I'm just looking down at the scar card and I think it is just mando Duplantis who's decided not to commit in it is 555 unless I'm told otherwise I think all the competitors are going to take this first bar we're going to work our way up from five fifty five to five seventy-five eighty we're going to eighty seven then and then we'll go out in five centimeter segments this is just a little early one to loosen everything off we might not be getting to the business end of this final for quite some time that spot can hang and the bar is now being raised ah well it was that's Nando Duplantis [Music] while the equipment on the right hand side is not going up correctly which is why the bar keeps coming off would you put sap Kendricks as the favorite for this Jenny because we're watching Lisa Claire he's pacing up and down it's going to be a while so you have got plenty of time to contemplate this one Kendricks arguably the favorite because he's won in Doha Rome Oslo he won the US title and got the u.s. record with 606 and he won in Zurich but it can't afford to have an off night because Duplantis in the foreground here the 19 year old who was born and raised in the States but represents Sweden because of his mother's heritage Kendricks is there on the floor looking quite relaxed Duplantis for a teenager has incredible composure so Kendricks in the foreground here cannot afford an average day at the office to defend this title he knows he's got to be right on top of his game he does have to be on top of his game he was unbeaten in 2017 not quite had the same dominance this year but it's a championship you know anything can happen in a championship whether it be the pole vault it just goes to say for any of em really and we know mondo Duplantis has got championship experience I'm thinking back to the Berlin European champs he cleared five ninety five which was a World Junior record he didn't went on to clear six meters to increase that and then he went all the way to 605 and it really was an exhibition so we know that he's a championship performer as well but I think maybe the significance will be these really early opening Heights and it's just really important to get first-time clearances in case the bar does keep getting raised very similar to what we saw in the wibble women's equivalent so it looks like we're ready to go well I'd be frightened if he did that to me in a dark alley Lee SEC with his opener 555 miles clear showed all his experience there after a lengthy delay getting an early clearance on the board and it's funny isn't it because as Iago brows to silver is finding out if it gets tasty and tight towards the end that early failure assuming the Olympic champion does come back and get over 55 those early failures can be the difference between being tied for bronze and ending up in fourth or fifth yeah really is important to get your strategy together so we're just watching now this is a second Brazilian athlete to make this final this is a gusto Dutra this is his fourth appearance at our World Championships due to has been around a while he set quite a few national records the Brazilian and then found them all taken off him by Tiago brass the silver the younger man pan-american medallist this year no didn't like that so both Brazilians one failure at this opening height of 555 and he has gone five 82 on his lifetime there's 580 this season so he's close to his best form second in the Paris diamond he is his best performance so far in 2019 I think he might have beaten geographer as the silver in the Brazilian champs so this is high one he's a 2016 Asian Indoor champion he's gone out to 5 meter 75 both indoors and out this year so this is some 20 centimeters short of that well he was successful with night but he did veer over to the right-hand segment these conditions in this arena are very reminiscent of the indoor arena hardly a breath of Earth so they really do add some stability a lot of the athletes depend quite a lot on a windsock to see the direction of the wind you'll see them looking over at most championships but I was speaking to Holley Bradshaw she competed last night in that final she was fourth and she said you didn't even need to look at the windsock there's no wind in this arena whatsoever so I was the first time clearance for Lita bar the German compares to the European under-23 champion so he goes clear and he keeps that all-important clear card so far at 555 just seem again he's going off quite a short pole actually to start off this competition all these pole vaulters will come with an array of poles as the bar goes up they'll change poles they start off on softer poles and as the bar Heights go up they'll go to the harder the harder poles the longer ones but the harder to bend okay here we go straight into it some Kendricks please get in his world championship campaign in this final underway and the defending champion made light work of that didn't he even the way he bounced back straight up on to his feet after landing looked effortless he is such a nice guy his philosophy on life's pretty simple he says these guys are my buddies we walk a similar road we face similar hardships the test is between me and the obstacle not me and my fellow man the philosophy of a champion and a nice one at that audio Michel statue nine years since that world junior silver 580 indoors ah that's good stuff from the Italian 27 years of age now 572 outdoors and that will just settle him down a smidge yeah I think that was an important Bolton statue there settle the nerves he's not one of those athletes that we're talking about that we think is going to contend for those medals but he has made this final and he's cleared the bar on their first attempt and that will give him a lot of confidence [Music] so been Broder's from Belgium a 20-17 European under-23 champion he the next one to go at this opening height oh and he cleared it and he caught it with his arm on the way down I was actually just gonna say it was a really solid plant in that box and I thought technically that was really good well he cleared it but it was more a mistake just letting his arm dropped away from his center of gravity on the way down so it will go down as a first-time failure for Broder's he was over it wasn't he and you just see at this point in fact it was his chest that caught the bar you can see it hurtling down to the mat and you will have to go again so the Belgian having to come back again so far Sony Brodus and Neetu Brazilians browsed the silver and/or Cusco Dutra valency level Unni his brother oh no not making the final I think that tells us there's a changing of the guard a few people feel with Renault actually that he's really struggled to get back to his old form since what was it a motorbike crash where he had some injuries to his knee and he's never quite been the same here's this little brother Valentin well it was a bit untidy but good enough yeah volunteering is a great world-class athlete in his own right I'm sure Renault his older brother I'll be watching over in that segment of the crowd it was quite a large crowd gathered themselves over to watch this final of the men's pole vault and he's happy he knows is significant for that first time clearance count backs very very important in this event what an exciting find Cole Walsh has turned out to be 24 years of age maths and computer science graduate from the University of Oregon vasin form on the US circuit and all of a sudden he's a name and a face to be reckoned with oh he was miles clear there that's a real shame he had enough height but might need to adjust the positioning of his pole you might get a glimpse here he's gone out to 583 awn up to 583 plenty of height but he took off so far in front of the bar that his downward arc took it on so an early failure for him so Cole Walsh of the United States will go again so to Ben Broder's of Belgium Dutra the pan american silver medalist from brazil and Chicago brows to silver from Brazil the reigning Olympic champion for men coming back for a second attempt at 5:55 [Music] the Olympic champion he has gone over 592 this season hasn't done that for a while that's more like it [Applause] graphic illustrates Sir Guy Booker's world record that's better from the Olympic champion but how costly could that first-time failure be should he get in the shake-up for the medals later on it's actually incredible when you think bookers record is 25 years old that's insane it is insane is one of the longest standing world records before so these guys were even born my mom dodaf wanted certainly so here we go second attempt for Augusta Dutra can he follow his fellow Brazilian brass with a clearance here for the second time of asking any con [Applause] [Music] well sometimes you see athletes clear something when they felt the first time and you wonder how they failed that looked a really really good clearance just looking for a little bit of feedback you see him here we can't see from the angle but actually he really really bends that pole so again it shows that it's probably one of the softer poles you'll need to change up to a firmer one which of course you have to get more speed you have to work harder on those poles but they reward you with the greater heights so Broder's it is attempting 555 opening bar for the second time this evening oh and I thought he had it well not to be so far he's the only athlete we'll have to go to the third time at this and in the women's pole vault final every athlete cleared a bar which was quite unusual well speaking of the women's final Don O'Brien the former Decathlon World and Olympic champion is down on the infield with a Katarina Stephanie who didn't quite manage to defend her title but she was on the podium and she knows more than a fing or two about this most difficult impressive score katarina think thanks for joining us here you'd pick up a bronze medal to go with your gold medal tell us about the competition where you were you pleased with where you where you finished yeah I mean I going to ever meet to win but once the meat is all very I think you have to appreciate what you did and what you got and I go to see some bats that go to bronze medal I would have liked to win and successfully defend my title but Sandi and Angelica chimed really good so I'm just happy that it really the best competition of women's polo that has ever happened I was on the podium you gave me some insight here on the situation on the runway and the box and you said it was a very shallow boxer so how important is it for those guys to make those adjustments and get these get and have no misses early on in the competition certain people more than others base in the way they don't I don't want to make predictions because I don't want to have a favorite on the website in with whoever wins but I think you might get as exciting as the women's competition you know we're talking a little bit about the schedule and usually this is a time of rest for a lot of these athletes so when you go home from here how much time do you take off and when do you get back into the program you know every year we date about four weeks off I think we will do the same this year but what flaming - maybe no - Ingo I don't like to skip I see that I think everything [Applause] I think doing so will take it easy with it your obliques show up and start programming now for July we always talk about how close the pole vaulting community is and you know the men came out to support the women you guys are coming out to support the men but you look around and there's past champions and and and former world record a former former champions as well you know take us you know tell us what is it like to be part of this cobalt Club you know I feel like it has changed over the years I think we're much closer now we'll speak to each other we're happy for each other I think is maybe even changing in other events as well I think they are getting closer as well but you know and you know really the sports and track and field is so difficult you have only such few good days and I think you need to find a way to be happy for other people and I think we do this I think we try to do our best and when we do we get to be happy for other people because otherwise it's a very hard career well thank you for your time and congratulations again and thank you for avoiding that that's election on who you felt might win thank you all right back to you guys thanks very much Dan great to get the thoughts of Katerina Stephanie D she's won just about everything available to her and wasn't far away from adding another goal to her collection hole stepper 570 not quite he heard what the Greek Olympic champion was saying there that the the planting area is quite shallow here in Doha how the stepper will have to come back now the blue-eyed boy of American and Swedish pole vault everybody in the Athletics community I think understands why the teenager chose to represent his mother's nation proud of his heritage for both countries he's the European champion he's one of three men to have gone over six meters this year he's done it twice yes the crowd loved him it wasn't his cleanest successful vault but the only man in the field who skipped 555 has sailed straight over 570 yeah that wasn't the grace to attempt but he's up and running and he does a little oversee the focus that you can see there he's looking down at the box and then straight away he moves his attention to the pole he's celebrated when he was still in the air didn't he such a calm and composed young man so this is brass he's already done more jumps than most of the competitors so far took him his second attempt at the 555 opening bar but he went clear and this is 570 and he made that one look as easy as his second attempt at 55 so maybe he's made those adjustments that Katerina Stephanie D explained to us really great insights it's great to have Dan O'Brien on the ground they're giving us a bird's-eye view and really good to bring that information back to us up here in their commentary box and to all the views at home so please SEC polish athlete he's one of the favorites but his title of course and he really gets himself up for it doesn't [Applause] and the crowd goes wild sorry busy over there in the arena quite a couple of hundred people gathered to watch this men's pole vault promised to be one of the events of the championship so we've been saying this about every event haven't we as the World Championships of course and the women's equivalent was a cracker a couple of evenings ago and this one promises to be the same before the championship I would have put this on the top of my field event hit lists along with the men's shot foot because so many men have gone over 22 and probably the men's discus with this style against takers possibilities a whole load of men in fantastic form now Tiago browse the silver failed once at 55 and went straight over 17 let's see if two to his teammate can do the same no didn't like it he's annoyed with himself there an American silver medalist and South American champion finding things a little tough here in the early stages yeah we can see the bottom actually just came off off is polliver yet to actually pick it up and force it back on so he's just having a feel his placing his pole again in the plant box and he's just having a feel and again I think Katerina Stephanie Diaz comments really make a lot of sense for us watching those pictures well we have had great analysis from Don O'Brien and it is of course the penultimate event in the decathlon and Dan how long did it take you to get to grips with this most technical of events before you fell - so you mastered it and it was one of your best well it was interesting I pull malted when I was 12 and 13 years old but when I took up decathlon at age 16 17 it was almost like I had forgotten everything that I learned I was not a very good pole vaulter through college only about 1213 feet but it wasn't until I got a really good coach I'd say five or six years until I I really was able to master it but I failed many many times like the 1992 Olympic Trials I was not a good pole vaulter although I had jumped high at the time I was not a good jumper and I let the pressure get to me so you know it was certainly in my mid-20s 26 27 years old before I was a 5 metre 520 vaulter and the things that hold pote Walters back a little bit is his is the fear to get on a bigger pole the fear to go from a longer run these guys out here the gentlemen that we're seeing in the World Championships our Daredevils this is the X Games the in the sport of athletics and these guys are willing to scale those high heights and it's interesting when you come down from 17 or 18 feet it's a long drop down and it can it can really shake some people up so the pull belt is something that I always had to deal with from a fear standpoint these guys are absolutely fearless they are and you know one of the best modern versions of athletics that I really like and I suspect you might do as well a great clearance there by the German he loved it there're bowls tenders missed one at 5:17 you Dan I love it when pole-vault goes to a city center because for precisely the bravery you're referring to for members of the public in a shopping center or or a street seem to be standing on the ground right next to a bar it gives them a much better impression as to just how brave and how high five meters is because when you're watching on TV five meters it's just a number but when you're standing on the ground looking up you cannot believe that somebody can get their body over there with a look with it with it with a fiberglass pole and you know Rob you talk about five meters Sam Kendricks pole is five meters and he he is the one thing I'd say about safe giving his run is so dialed in and that's why he's having so much success this year these guys around enormous polls I think the biggest poll I ever jumped on was a 490 16 feet one inches these guys are 5 meters 505 and the mandles are so big that they can almost that they can almost not put their fingers clear around and touch that's how big these pulls these polls absolutely get but that's when pole-vaulting gets fun rough when they're in a shopping mall when they're on the street sandy Morris puts on an annual Street vault every single year she's done it for the last five years I remember winning a beach vault one time in Tacoma Washington I've altered 17 feet five inches and it was really exciting but the people get a chance to get right up there when I go to the when I go to the when I went to the talents deca star meet and let the people come down from the stands Circle the pit and really see what these athletes are going through so just as I'm standing here guys I've seen a couple of adjustments mondo Duplantis has moved his start mark back about six different inches which tells us that he was just a little bit too close on his step down there at the box and if things go according to what Katarina Stephanie said these guys are going to be reaching into their bags for some of the biggest polls because the poll is able to move so quickly sometimes you get you get a big bend in the pole and touches the back of the box and it can take that it can take the jumper straight up and down this is allowing your pole to bin very freely given you've given the athlete more depth into the pit brilliant analysis this game may I ask what's your take on the fact that mondo Duplantis was the only falter not to have an opening height at 5:55 is it just that he's so confident he didn't feel as though he needed a nice easy opener well you know I think it varies for each different person I was down there watching the high jump earlier and I think when you don't get a lot of warm-ups you want to take your jumps at those early bars and it looked like mondo Duplantis came down the runway enough times he had a lot of discussions with his father and athletes want to do it they're very very comfortable with Sam Kendricks came over to the bench three or four times and changed his starting height and that's based on how do your warm-ups go mondo Duplantis must have loved his warmups he must have got enough of them and said you know what I'm gonna let everybody else jump it at that first height I'm gonna sit and wait because I just because I feel a little bit better great stuff thank you Dan we will hear more from you as this fascinating men's poll more final edges towards a conclusion I suspect we will be going but quite some time to come LASIK Duplantis Sam Kendricks all over 578 the first time of asking a Gaston Duke sir we'll have to come back so to Wang of China statute and Broder's also falling foul at their first attempt at this second height let's see how Valentin la Villa need progresses here under 23 bronze a few years ago when you see that haircut you know it's called Walsh a breakthrough season for this 24 year old who needed a second crack at 55 he's you know he he's only been on a couple of Diamond League meets Jen he's quite a character this guy I like him yeah is pretty unmistakable that his appearance and he's just one of those athletes who kind of just shows you what he's thinking inside he wears his heart on his sleeve doesn't he and he's so emotional when he clears those bars we can see how much he's having to focus on this one so this is his first attempt at 5:17 no he didn't up the height he veered off towards the right-hand side so he did have a failure first time at 5:55 so he continues in that form at 5:17 he'll have to take a second attempt at that one Raphael whole step up the former world champion feels like he's been around for an eternity they the German team 11 years ago when he was still a teenager this the former world champions second attempt at 5:17 yeah nicely done by the German he's a small powerful man when you stand next to him he doesn't cut initially as immediately a striking figure but he's extremely athletic and has incredible flexibility safely over at five seventy six men now over the second height this is Dutra with his second attempt can he match Holst effort no now definite problems here for the plan American silver medalist he bailed on his first attempt before he had a proper go at the bar and all of a sudden he along with ben brode as the belgian who was on last chance saloon at 555 so it's the case for the Brazilian at 5:17 yeah there could be numerous reasons for that it could be some technical issue but also don't forget the whole essence of this event here's quite a dangerous event sometimes people you know they just lose the confidence it doesn't feel right and if it doesn't feel right a lot of jump has just abour the jump it can lunge funny things might not go right so it's quite happens quite frequently it's just a shame that it happened into Dutra there in this World Championship final but let's see what he comes back with on his third attempt as we've pickup live here with hung he goes to five reaches 17 so the red flag goes off as the bar comes down you didn't look comfortable very the did he wank so that's his second time failure of 5:17 he'll take a third attempt at that one here we can see again these athletes really have to put their hand right to the top of that pole push it away and hope that anything trijet themselves over that bar but how's he does the bar comes down at the same time as he does they'll have to go at that fighting for a third time this is tajci he's going at 574 second time as well and I know people are listen to us all over the world I've just been checking on social media it's got a nice message guys we want to check your social media later people who listen to an India saying that we're helping them fall in love with a sport so that's fantastic to see this World Championships of course how can you not fall in love with it every events these are the best athletes in the world instead she was close there wasn't he on his second attempt so 5 meter 17 was fine did a few of these competitors out the web underneath this is his second attempt at 517 he brought the bar down on his first and he goes clear and is so thrilled with that of course well that's a look of relief isn't it he stays in the competition I'm sure has been speaking to his older brother and this is Dutra this is the Brazilian he struggled on his first two attempts of course how will he go on his third and it is better but it's not enough so that will be the end of Dutra 's World Championship campaign he's done well to make this final just looking up there even though his competitions finished he still wants to know what adjustments should he have made and this is wrong this is the Chinese competitor this is his third attempt and it was a better one wasn't it we signaled to the crowd [Applause] and he too we'll see the end to his World Championship campaign this is statue the Italian athletes world junior silver medalist nine years ago now he can make it absolutely fantastic for sketchy 5-meter 70 for the third time of asking so call Walsh what can he do the runner-up in the US national champs first World Championship final [Applause] and the celebration that half began hadn't a well I'm sure there'll be plenty of world tranship in this young man future he's had a great year of coal Walsh just not to be here in his first World Championships that was such a shame because he had it on hide he just brushed it with his chest and he knows he knows he was capable of more here tonight the Swedish flag on the spikes tells you it's mondo Duplantis yeah this is Duplantis first attempt to 580 [Applause] the bar goes up he doesn't look convinced himself well the fun's like this but Monday two twenties didn't of course these athletes can sense things they know exactly what they're looking for from an individual perspective it can we see his gaze shift after his planted the pole as he makes his way up towards the bar I don't know how he does that well multi-talented clearly that must be is a party trick and we now see Elise neck the polish athlete again - this is his first attempt at 5 meters 18 well that was a great clearance wasn't it these that was more impressed than Duplantis was with his attempt and the action come in thick and fast some Kendricks this is his first attempt it has seen 580 bar and that was a great clearance looks like he really enjoys it and some kind ryx and that's sometimes because you know you're in great form you enjoy in your sports it feels easy what's not to like about it well I don't think you can get much more relaxed than that he's got a big personality Kendricks but he seems so genuine when he says he cares about how everybody gets on because they're all in the same boat statue showed great character Jen making that third time clearance at 5:17 and now his John has just got a little bit harder ten centimetres higher so far the big boys are delivering here it's beginning to warm up nicely this final it is warming up nicely get you of course has had more votes than those that have got first-time clearances and he just knew that felt wrong from the beginning well it does take a lot of effort as these athletes go through the different phases of the vault if it doesn't feel right during the first phase well there's no point proceeding with the rest of it let's save the energy let's get you can go back try to get it right on his next attempt so there we see the arms leaves the Valentine lovin II this is his first attempt at that 580 bar it took him two attempts Tencent Twitter's less at 5:17 he has got listen him he's jumped a personal best of 5 meters 82 this season so it is right up there towards the top of his capacity but it is a height that is achieved successfully before so here we go come here some of the program in him and he starts his way down the runway [Applause] and that was a decent attempt got two more attempts of course so is taken 4/10 thus far in this competition the likes of Sam Kendricks LASIK mando Duplantis they've taken two or three so they've still got lots in reserve for those greater heights than when they come and no failures yet for any of the three favorites which is crucial now we see Laval lead on his second attempt at 580 but with the same outcome unfortunately so I wonder what's going through his head now at this stage nervous no moments no doubts you've got one last attempt to stay in this competition we just see him there on takeoff all happened so quickly didn't there but he knocked it off actually on his way up so he didn't stand much of a chance this is right at the top of his capacity remember he's got a personal best at 5 meters 82 this is just 2 centimeters below that so it would take one of the best performances of his career to clear this bar and continue so have Stefan the German athlete who won this world champion title six years ago now in Moscow very experienced athletes can he clear 580 these are just a few final moments of composure he'll be just running through the process in his head the individual things he's looking for he's just working out that grip on the bar what the vault has got tape there to give him a good grip as well as tack so they can hold it here he goes no not to be well that was his third attack so Hobbs Decker will exit a competition Tiago brass the silver last chance 580 he knows he's capable of this not to be for the Olympic champion it has been a better season he's back with his old coach and he's overcome his injuries now his thoughts immediately turn to the defense of his Olympic title in Tokyo in ten months time stead she is talented Italian he needed three four five seventeen [Applause] he needs three four five eighty he has gone higher indoors let's see if the crowd can roll the Italian over no didn't like it great effort to make the final well jr. this takes no further part his third time permits at 5:17 we'll give him some pride heading into the long winter months of training ahead [Applause] Nabila knee retired in sixth his brother will be watching somewhere we have looked for him but we've got a decent smattering of supporters over there we haven't spotted him just yet but I'm sure he'll be there willing his younger brother on and he wants to crowd support now and pole vault competition is getting interesting we've lost the Olympic champion lost ecchi Cole Walsh the talented American has gone one by one now down low villainy joined no big names over 580 no it wasn't to be aspiration the world championship glory comes to an end here for approaching half-past nine in the evenings a lovely atmospheric night it has cooled just a touch you've got the lightest hint of a breeze up in our commentary box it hasn't been a bad season for Balanchine la villainy only three left in it to plant it's the first to attempt 587 oh so close will that prove costly Duplantis now has one cross next to his name to clean jumps up to and over 580 same for Kendricks and Lee sake so the three men have gone over six meters this season will share the medals the only question is which color first mark against Duplantis they're scheduled to go up in increments of 587 592 597 and then to be confirmed this is building up beautifully between the three main protagonists the men who have delivered time and time again this season Duplantis won in Stanford Lee set one in Lausanne and Monaco Kendricks one Doha Stockholm Oslo Paris and Zurich release sec keep his clean card going and take an early advantage over mondo Duplantis first time over 555 first on over 5:17 first time over 580 [Applause] first little stumble from him and all of a sudden little mistake from the Swede and the poll gives the defending champion an opportunity to move ahead those early failures could prove very costly for lis SEC and for mondo Duplantis he's like a wild man about to go on the hunt for his evenings quarry Lisa a man a huge passion a man of huge ability this vault becomes very very important [Applause] the defending champion his father Scott is his coach the man who constantly says the test has been between me and the obstacle not me and my fellow man he is a great fan of pole vault he's a great student of the sport and he will be well aware that his two great rivals have both failed their first attempt at 587 this would give him the psychological edge [Applause] Wow and still there's nothing to choose between these three men Kendricks to plantus and Li SEC all square with one failure each at 587 and a clean card up to that height fascinating I was sure Jenny that he was going to get that knowing that the other two had failed but maybe that added to the pressure yeah he would have been aware of that I know he's been quoted say is not against his competitors is against the object but he would have known for sure huge amount of noise and Swedish support for mando Duplantis on the far side of stadium 587 this time [Applause] and the teenager delivers again as he did at the European Championships last year multiple world junior record holder a trailblazer of his sport and he is the first man clear at 587 and all of a sudden the psychological advantage goes towards the Swede rather than away from him and towards his two great rivals in this battle for what would be his first world senior title that was class it's like a penalty shootout isn't it at the moment just 19 years of age his mondo Duplantis but he's the first to put it in the back of the net five meters 87 for the second time I've asked him so Lisa how can he respond this is his second attempt he would carry the same card is Duplantis if he's successful on this second attempt really have to get himself up for it doesn't he [Applause] and he does follow in the same form as de content so evenly matched of course the number one is coming up beside my computer here Duplantis one least set one Kendricks has a number three at the side of his name currently sang Kendricks will have the opportunity to turn that back into a one and tie for the lead again now we've come all having had one that failure so far de Tartus and Lisette there who's going to burst a blood-vessel with that celebration there he shouts before and when he clears these shouts afterwards even louder unbridled joy and a bit of relief I'm sure in there but feel to the second his Kendricks with his second attempt looking to tie the lead once more he's the defending champion he's the season's outstanding performer no not this time and Kendricks has got some thinking to do here Cole Walsh's great friend is helping him out nothing to separate Duplantis and Li sick but even if Sam Kendricks gets over 587 at the third time of asking he is still behind on count back I thought he would go over at the first time of asking because he knew the importance of that with Duplantis and Lisa volting before him but he's coming under pressure now we'll find out what he's got mentally we really will this is some Kendricks this is a crucial crucial vault for him he needs this in a competition and he gets it [Applause] so thrilled for him his American teammate and I was actually wondering whether some Kendricks is going to take that attempt or whether I was going to just go for five ninety-two and try and get it at the first for the got 587 and has a fantastic clearance that took such such part he had a tiny little moment of deceleration before he planted the pole he got over that by a whisker he's not tied with deep lunges and Lisa Kenney more because he took two attempts rather than three but all three men over 587 what a competition on the far side of the arena fondo Duplantis no 592 and this is at the first time of asking but remember we're talking about a young man who has scaled six meters not once but twice this season on the college circuit and in the annual sweden against Finland fixture Lisa can the poll be the first of the three men over 592 this would put him into the lead No and absolutely dead identical card so far to that of mondo Duplantis Kendricks the defending champion will finish third if none of these men go higher than 587 but they've all gone six meters this season so I would be very surprised if we don't see some successful clearances at least in the low five 90s three Giants of the sport and it's every bit as good as we hoped it would be so he is going for 592 well if the other two don't get over it would be good enough for gold Kendricks is the defending champion only Sergey Bubka has ever successfully won this title back to back he did six that might be pushing it I'm sure his focus is on a second he wants the crowd I'm sure he'll get it because he cheers all the other competitors he was willing his countryman Cole Walsh on when he found out at 5:17 this will turn the initiative back in the favor of the defending champion 592 he's turning oh my goodness me tell us the hour cometh tonight and all of a sudden it's the Americans giving it the big fist pumps and the high fives Kendricks has laid down the gauntlet and said okay I needed three to get over 587 but I've just smashed 592 first time of asking if you want this title come and go higher mondo Dook Lantis he knows Sam Kendricks has got clear at 592 can him rise to the occasion one chance left he can't believe that he's failed at 592 such as the confidence and arrogance of youth and such as the size of his talent there wasn't a doubt in his mind that he was going clear Kendricks cool as a cucumber now that he's got that all-important circle next to his name at 592 li SEC has opted to pass with his second attempt so the next installment of drama is two and a quarter minutes away yeah when we get down to the last few competitors they're given three minutes in which to take their next vault of course there's only three men left in this competition at this point so Duplantis will try and use his time wisely well we knew it would be a thrill I didn't we lie seconds using the tactical cart who knows at this point even if he goes clear of 592 it would not be enough to take that gold medal some Kendricks of course cleared that on his first attempt so many twists and turns in this tale of course Kendricks was on his third attempt a 587 and nearly exiting the competition not long ago and now he's back in the driving seats without all-important number one next to his name The Apprentice is asking the crowd for their support [Applause] the attempt five ninety-two for the third time here we go honey does a just to quiet he believed he could do it Disney we kept this composure is unbelievable for 19 years that's why people love him he can take you to the edge of your seat and then just keep on giving more what composure from a teenager incredible mental strength and self belief Kendricks needed a last chance saloon at 587 and so too did two planchas for 592 the right index finger went out I'm not finished yet [Applause] mando Duplantis right back in the game here 597 no well we are absolutely enthralled by this Beaumont competition all three six meter men still in the hunt for the gold and Dan O'Brien your good friend Sam Kendricks at the moment has one hand on a successful title defense in a 2nd world gold medal and he's been nice enough to come stand with me from time to time when some of the other Baltar's are jumping and you know what guys the pole vault is just a game of adjustments making the right adjustments at the right time little things in the and the athletes always can't see those adjustments it takes those coaches off to the side so Sam Kendricks dad is coaching him Greg Duplantis mando Duplantis his father is coaching him and getting those step checks whether it's a step check or a pull change they could see much better from the side but Sam Kendrick told me everybody today has their a game he's not surprised that these are the last three men's standing and I asked him why did Lysa pass and he said a pass doesn't win him the gold he said lie sick his finished second his finished third he wants a gold medal and the only way he was going to get a gold medal was to jump higher than Sam Kendrick and he had the pass to do that so really exciting stuff Sam Kendrick even called mando's make he said Mama's going to make the adjustments he's going to come down and boom a real nice effort there by Lysa cat 597 and this guy really brings it down the runway he is big and strong you stand next to him and you realize you have small arms and small shoulders but this guy really brings brings it down the runway he's much faster than the other two has a little bit longer run but my sick I think if they were to run a hope 100 meters lie sick would would beat both of these guys but Kendricks run is on question he said that su that he said that after he made the 592 his run was dialed in Jan one of the things that is so impressive about mondo Duplantis is his mental composure at such a tender age I mean that third side clearance of 592 he had the entire stadium in the palm of his hand he knew he needed that I just don't know where he gets that self belief on that straight frog because he's so young well that comes with vault experience this guy has been around the world at such a young age he's been around the world he competed in a lot of big meats you know young guys like that don't get the opportunity to get that experience and that's going to carry him a long ways and I think we all agree that mondo Duplantis is the future of pole vaulting internationally he's Sam Kendrick is is probably going to move out after another Olympic cycle so who knows but mondo Duplantis already it's all that experience I saw concern in his face but to see him have ice in his veins on that third attempt was was really really absolutely told me a lot about him not to be there McKendrick Duplantis 597 not to be one chance left we're rocking them rolling between the German and the men's Palmer because we have to world class thoroughly absorbing field events taking center stage here at this 2019 I double AF World Championships and here we are still wondering and still waiting and still watching the three best pole vaulters of the year are laying on quite a show here on a farm ee ving in doha wait for the raw [Applause] here comes Lisa last chance has to go over and doesn't so yatra Lisa who has become a father in August gives it the big backflip on our daily Thompson style he's here somewhere commentating I'm Sean Daly would have been impressed with that bronze for lis sec to replicate his third-place finish in Beijing and after his silver from two years ago his hunt for global glory continues a fine season and he will be back in the shake-up for Tokyo of that you can be certain he deserves a few weeks off with his new young family well we can really feel a tension now it's a two-way battle for that gold medal between some Kendricks at the United States of America and mando Duplantis of Sweden Dan O'Brien Sam Kendricks has seen two plantus fail 597 at the second time here he goes another miss for Sam right before he win he got a note from his father he's got big cards that he holds up where he watch Sam to put the standards and based on his last jump he had 60 up there so Sam moved his standards up quite a bit almost doesn't look like Sam has enough pole for this for this height but a second miss for him we'll see what kind of adjustments he can make Kendricks has the edge courtesy of clearing 592 and the first time of asking remember he needed three to stay in the hunt for gold at 587 the teenager Duplantis needed three attempts to get over 592 so at the moment it would be silver for this precocious young talent who soared to 605 to take the European title last year he has set nine World Junior Records his first age group world best came at the age of seven his father jumped 580 in 1983 his brother was tenth in the world juniors a few years ago his mum was a brilliant junior hepped athlete the sport has run in his blood since he was holding up to war and it's for these moments that is family coach Tim it's for these moments that he first picked up a pole and jumped and landed on a sponge mattress in the back garden mighty oaks out of acorns grow and now we get to see what did plant is has got must clear to stay in the hunt for gold oh it's unbelievable it is absolutely incredible the teenager has just done it again right when you thought it was over just when we thought he would settle for silver English the goal to the defending champion he has pulled the metaphorical rabbit out of the hat and Kendricks it's the first to congratulate him you cannot take your eyes off this kid for one single second Rob you said the word kid he is but he has just grown in capacity again Charlotte Duplantis take that world championship gold medal Sam Kendricks had one finger on it and Kendricks will have to clear 597 if he is to retain his world championship title 19 years of age mundo de Casas well it looks relaxed doesn't a some Kendricks he's saying 17 we heard those insights from Dan O'Brien say that his father said he needed 60 that was on their uprights so now he's going he's making those adjustments he's going 70 this time John O'Brien have you ever seen anything quite like that Wow guys it is so exciting down here but it's just it's unreal this is reality TV at its finest I look over mondo de plana says every pull and his bag pulled out he's making last-minute decisions the adjustments have just been fantastic but he's just cool as a cucumber to come down the runway on a third attempt and get a make right there is just I mean seriously guys ice in your veins but I know that Sam Kendrick you know he he's cool like that as well and you look at him and he doesn't show a lot of stress and he told me is this thing got going he said you know what all you want to do is put yourself in a place where you can battle for the medals and he's in that place right now and he's fighting hard he knows he knows what's at stake and he says he's won the gold he just wants to be in the mix and he's right where he said he wanted to be right now [Applause] Kendricks the one last chance to keep his dream of Goldeneye and he's done it [Applause] till it the man come up the defending champion this is absolutely breathtaking [Applause] he's beside himself as well he think ICO Walsh over there right away and they embraced immediately and there's mando Duplantis and the battle continues this is too heavyweight fighters guys just throwing haymakers at one another and you can't help but see Daniels tall the biggest man in yellow they're up in the cheering section is mando Duplantis went over but you know guys now everybody in the crowd is rooting for each one of these guys it's not just the Swedish the Swedish contingent rooting for Duplantis everybody is on both of these athletes side because they know that something special could really come out of tonight that bar will move up over 6 meters we could see two potentially two guys over six meters in this competition tonight well really interesting you can cook the atmosphere with a knife and the crowd really broad when Kendricks went over them on our scorecard we've only got up to 5 meters 97 we have no idea what's coming next and I guess it'd be up to those guys to decide just looking now I think they're going to go up in five centimeters 602 will be the next bolt that they look to achieve Wow two guys battling it out six meters and Beyond now for that World Championship title so we've already heard Montoya Duplantis of every poll out of his bag and they tried to each other are they this is so different than a lot of events Hendrix and de fondo de Francis best of friends disrespect that all these vultures have for each other I'm really nice to see so many of them cheering both of the guys on this is what they work hard for this is what drives them on to have that opportunity to battle it out for these major medals at global championships not since 2001 as the world title been taken with a vault of six meters or over Daniel Stone the star of the show last night is a mere spectator this evening and he is loving every single second of this unbelievable from Duplantis and Sam Kendricks and a little reminder here the blue-eyed baby-faced assassin took the European title last year 6:05 Wow are willing him on once more as they were when he soared to 597 surely he can't go 602 coming well maybe but not this time at the moment he is still in second place on count back they both needed three at 597 but Kendricks went over 592 at the first time of asking Duplantis needed three so if neither man gets over the six feet of barrier it will be the silver for Duplantis and if it's the silver my goodness me he will have made Kendricks worked so so hard for this I will never forget that 597 that was absolutely mind-blowing and the crowd were willing him on every single step of the way Palmer can really help create an atmosphere in a way that some other sports just can't because the sense of anticipation is almost as good as the moment of realization that they've done it it's like Christmas Day the Christmas presents are as good before they're unwrapped because she's so excited about what's going to happen and what a Christmas present an early Christmas present these two world-class sportsmen are laying on here in Doha setting the stadium alight here on the fifth night of action in Doha well these are great seeds aren't they we can see DuPont is just getting information office father and a store another board go up that was the Sam Kendricks it was 70 we know that's what he used at the last attempt so he's keeping the uprights at that same position I need so much information all this strategy behind it what poll to use what position to have those uprights set up so the game continues [Applause] and Kendra to dusk in the crowds come on guys get behind me I'm gonna need this this extra support for this one 6:02 Kendricks the world's greatest performer this year he has established a new u.s. record this year of 606 both these men know they are capable of 602 but unlike Duplantis lodged in the back of his mind somewhere in the darkest recesses of his subconscious Kendricks knows if they both miss he saw the gold and we return our attention to a brilliant climax at Apollo Duplantis second at 10 602 he's done this before oh he's getting closer remember he's guaranteed the silver but the reason it's silver and not gold despite the fact that they both needed three attempts at 597 he needed three attempts at 592 Kendricks he did this at the US champs no one last chance to see if we can finish with the first six meter vault in World Championships since 2001 Don O'Brien he must clear this if it's to be gold [Applause] well the 602 just is not to be for this young superstar it's yeah I say without a doubt this is the future of pole vaulting as Sam Kendrick goes up and they're the metals the gold medalists and the silver medalists and it's just interesting guys how the crowd just is drawn to mondo to plan as he just draws you in and there's a lot of people from Sweden here but here comes Liza Caswell joining them on the mat but he is just somebody who you want to stand up in route for because he he is fearless he puts you on the edge of your seat and he delivers time and time again and Robin jenia it's been such a pleasure calling this pole vaulter you guys did a wonderful job up and just building the suspense building the drama and I said the only thing that could probably hurt this bull walk competition is the final on the track but it didn't seem to this this pole walk competition was just dramatic all the way through and it was third attempt makes by both of these guys you love to see in the pole vault these guys coming through in the clutch time and time again well so much drama we've loved calling it up here really jealous that you're down there of course dad you're really enjoying it down there but all your insights just really made it all part of it thank you so much the three stars of the year delivered a wonderful final Kendricks successfully defending the crown the only man to do it since sergei booker Duplantis takes the silver lee sec the bronze this time
