Exodus 1 beginning in verse number number 15 then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives one of whom was named Sephora and the other poor and he said when you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birth stone if it is a son then you shall put him to death but if it's a daughter then she shall live but the midwives feared God and did not do as the King asked or had commanded them but they let the boys live so the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them why have you done this thing and let the boys live the midwives said to Pharaoh because the Hebrew women are not as Egyptian women for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives can get to them so God was good to the midwives and the people multiplied and became very mighty now what was happening huh kill these sons because if you can kill the son you prevent them from continuing to multiply y'all a missing head if it's the son killed the son because the woman can't give birth unless there are men to plant seed so if I'm going to kill the future of the people then I want to kill the male child if I'm going to kill the future of the people then we prevent male leadership so and when we want to prevent male leadership we want to prevent them from multiplying so in order to slow down this multiplication and order to slow down their progress we want you to know if he will Midwife if that child is a son kill him now the Hebrew midwives said no we're not gonna do that we're not gonna do that because we fear God now which means the midwives took the position the Hebrew midwives took the position that we're gonna do everything we can to protect our sons because if we don't protect our sons it affects our forward movement stay with me here if we don't protect our sons it affects our forward movement there can be no progress if we allow our sons to be killed so the women the midwives took the posture and the disposition to protect the sons because they realize what the son meant to the overall development of the people if you're gonna kill a people kill the son because if you kill the son you will destroy the progress of a people let me say to you right now that I believe that within the tapestry of this country there has been from some a very intentional object of Wrath toward our black sons because they are viewed as a threat they are viewed as those that they don't want to see progress and they still treat the black child as if he's on the slave plantation and that they are the property of another race let me tell you something there is a very forward movement to attack the black son because the black son means something to the forward movement of this culture and I want to tell you that if you're not careful even as church members we will put our head in the sand and pretend like the social injustice is not happening within the context of our country now what are you saying brother Heywood I'm saying when you see a young man at 25 years old that is ostensibly jogging through a neighborhood and then when you see a brutal murder on recorded video of a young man unarmed at 25 years old and then there is a narrative that somehow someway he could have been involved in some burglary which then suggest license that two men armed with heavy firearms could now take the life of an unarmed black man at 25 years old with no threat to them with no witnessed felony yet they could take the posture that they had the right to use that kind of force against a young black man I've come today to tell you it is a time in a context where if we keep turning our head and act like it's not happening we are putting our sons in danger can you imagine the feeling of a black mother that gets a phone call that her son has been gunned down in the middle of the street in broad daylight unarmed not fret and now her mother's day hi Mother's Day is now without her son because he is victimized by a mentality that believes it is okay to devalue the black life of a son and that's the climate we live in so what happens this thing happens back in February and no arrests no charges happen for a period of time and only until this thing becomes absolutely public is there any type of repercussions attempted let me suggest to you that we're living in a time when I'm praying for our black mothers who needs a hole close to their black son's because they have become the object of some people's wrath and I'm not playing I'm not making a blanket statement I'm not being universal in my language I am saying there are still folk within the context of this country that devalue of black life and find it acceptable to make our sons the object of their wrath and the object of their prejudice and think that it is okay to take a black life I'm telling you that we need to be mindful the best way to kill a nation of people is you attack their sons because if you can kill the son you can kill the progress of that nation and I need you to understand that there are some that are bent and absolutely loyal to the notion of not allowing a black culture to have standing in this society and so what do they do that black life is completely devalued now I find it interesting and I'm gonna get back to my pets in a moment to show you what Moses mother did Jakub ed so to ensure the progress of her son listen I am absolutely offended when the President of the United States can get on national television and make the statement that perhaps there was something off of the recording that we did not see that gives some context to what's on the recording so the suggestion is that regardless of what's on the recording that perhaps there was something off the recording that gives license as to why this life was taken on the recording pray tell me what license does anybody had to take the life of an unarmed person that pose no threat in that context what I'm suggesting is mr. president there is no narrative that gives license to the notion of a young black man dying at the hands of these two men with these firearms who pose no threat and witness no felony but yet thought it was right to take the life of the young I don't even want to tell you what the video look like after the young man was shot and the disposition of these men was anything but fear it was anything but remorse it was anything but the notion and the idea that this was something they felt they had to do the dispossession was that of two men who took the life of this 25 year old young man who was moving through the neighborhood who ostensibly it was believed that he did a burglary and what I find interesting about this country this country will often find a way to make the life taken of a young black man acceptable by creating a narrative that gives people licence and believe it's okay and that to take place church folk don't be so religious that you become insensitive to the walls of social injustice don't be so buried in the proverbial church building that you pray to Jesus but act like you don't see malignant behavior let us be mindful that the Bible is not only about not being racist the Bible also teaches to be anti-racist now just I said it and I mean it just like I said it the Bible teaches anti racism and the Bible teaches that in Christ there's neither Jew nor Greek male nor female bond nor free we are all one in Christ in other words my mindset needs to be that that God loves everybody and is inclusive of every ethnicity let's stop pretending like the gospel is not relevant it's a social malignancy now that being the case I wanted to put that in some level of context because we got Christians that like to hide in church buildings and like to hide under Christianity and like to pray to God but that like nuns going on you can pretend like nuns going on because it's not your son but when it's your son when that trouble hits your life and when the malignancy knocks at your door all of a sudden you want God to be relevant to your social injustice I've come to tell the truth stop acting like God it's not concerned about that kind of injustice somebody asked me the other day as soon as I brought this up somebody asked me they said well are you as outraged when it's a black man killing another black man that this is interesting how people like to mix a narrative of course we are outraged over that but that does not listen to me an african-american murdering another african-american does not equal African American life don't matter he said it again an African American killing another African American does not equal African Americans life don't matter here's a narrative well if blacks are killing blacks then when a police officer does it or someone in society does it it should not be an outrage since black folk kill black folk that's a false narrative and it is not even logical thinking I want you to understand there is outrage on both sides but we do not turn our face so when this kind of social malignancy takes place and we should be as outraged no matter what race receives racist behavior so it doesn't matter what's a racist what's your racial legacy is whoever you are no matter what race you are no one should treat you as if your life is insignificant so I've come to the church and I know some church folk listening right now are uncomfortable because you'd rather hear me do an exegetical dissertation on the text and you'd rather have me do something on theology you rather have me do something in regards to our our journey to heaven but let me tell you on our way to heaven sometimes you got to address hell on earth because you cannot ignore what's happening in the fabric of our journey and let me tell you what I believe I believe if you're gonna be a Christian and be relevant here you've got to bring Christ to the crisis I'm gonna say that again you're gonna be relevant here then you gonna have to learn how to bring Christ to the crisis because if we're not bringing Christ to the crisis then we're trying to lock Christ in our proverbial religious experience and it's time for the church to start saying the crisis needs Christ now what's the Christian message a Christian message is not the notion of revenge it is not the idea of being or returning malignant behavior with malignant baby it is not rendering evil for evil it is saying we as Christians expose the idea of anyone's like being treated as if it doesn't matter to God every life matters to God black/white Spanish whatever whatever is your descriptive adjective every life matters and it just so happens that blacks whether you want to admit it or not the life is often viewed from a perspective of insignificance come here with the assumption that every african-american male particularly with any young context is somehow up to something that is outside of the scope of moral behavior and assumption so with the assumption comes the light doesn't matter listen what I'm suggesting to all of us right now is is Christians let's speak up when social malignancy happens and it knocks it out door speak up and don't be afraid to bring Christ to the crisis speak up and don't be afraid to say that Jesus matters in our current context speak up and bring your Bible out your car and bring it to the life of folk who are struggling with real social injustice because if your Bible is left in your car and it only comes out when you come to church at some point I need you to know that your whole Christian life is in the context of irrelevant if your voice does not speak up when trouble knocks it out door so in Georgia where we live be it far from the Christian to get silent now when we see this kind of malignancy now let me do this let me do this let me do this here's what happens in exodus chapter 2 watch this in Exodus chapter 2 that we know what happened in X is 1 the middle I the midwives protect the sons so we're not going to kill them because all Pharaoh is concerned with is that if we don't kill them sons these people gonna keep multiplying which they have time to deal with that these these people might make too much progress if we don't kill these sons if we don't stop what's going on with these sons these folk won't keep making progress they're gonna keep multiplying they're gonna keep expanding watch this watch this here's what you don't know you know what that matters because there is a Moses in Xhaka bedroom whose life is destined to make extreme impact let me tell you why you got a potential son you don't know what God is gonna do with your son because he might be a Moses that was in your womb and God needs you to do everything we can as a mother as a society to protect the Moses that you gave birth to I've come to tell you that you don't know who your son will be and you don't know how God has destined your son he might be a Moses that is in the womb of a soccer bag and you gotta do everything you can to protect that box it's not not just as the mother but watch this it wasn't just the mother the mother's protecting their sons but the midwives can I tell you my mama used to tell me it takes a village to raise a child listen the village has got to protect the sons because there are some Moses being born and Pharaoh wants to kill him the society wants to destroy him because sometimes if you don't kill that son he might make the people multiply come here watch this watch this watch it watch it watch it watch it you can chapter two with me thank you you're in Chapter two watch this oh god I want to run around the building right here now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi the woman conceived and bore a son and when she saw that he was beautiful she hit him three months I'd stay with the context why is she hiding him because she knows there was a decree set out that all the son should be killed by the way since the midwives didn't do it Pharaoh gave the command to all of his authorities and said if you see a son killer now the instruction was to throw them in the Nile stay with me boy kill him for everybody on the sons in the nile river so now Moses is born shaaka been taken for fear the son what are we gonna do I can hear his father saying they want us to kill him think they want us they want us to kill him they they want us to destroy him what what do we do can you imagine the sleepless nights I'm wondering whether or not your child's gonna live because if your child gets discovered then the role is for them to be killed or they to be thrown into the Nile River can you imagine being the kind of mother that every day every moment you're worried about who's gonna see your son and if they see your son they might put your son in a place where they're gonna be put to death what do you do when folk wants you to throw your trial in the Nile River and every day you gotta worry whether or not my child is gonna be all right let me tell you about a black mother she's gotta worry about every time her child goes outside of the door every time I Drive goes to the store up the block every time my child decides to go on a job every time my child decides to go to a party every time my child is sent off the college that black mother absolutely every day and every night whether or not that child is gonna be okay I've come today to tell you can you understand the feeling of a soccer bed when she knows that Farrell wants her child to be thrown into the Nile River now what if what if Moses dies no Moses no Exodus no Moses no Israel going to clean it no Moses no Israel making progress as a nation God raised up Moses to be the seed that would move Israel forward let me help you I'm almost sure that Barack Obama's mother had no idea that she was carrying a Moses in her womb I know that Martin Luther King Jr's mother had no idea she was carrying a Moses in her womb I've come to tell somebody sometimes you don't know what you're carrying in your womb and I need to tell you sometimes you gotta hide your Moses what what do you mean what do you mean how do you how do you hide Moses how do you hide Moses today teach your son how to get an education out of a system that don't like it teach your son how to take advantage of an education that was never meant for him teach your son how to be respectful so he's not viewed as a threat teach your son how to fit within the fabric of society to get where he's trying to go you got to learn how to hide him at a time when folk wanna kill him and the best way to hide is for him to be dedicating to excelling because when you understand the system that's not for you then you can be successful in the system that's trying to kill you you gotta teach your children there is a period of hiding what do you mean hide I don't mean blocking who you are I mean being a person that is taking advantage of every opportunity afforded to you so that you can prepare for the day come here that you get thrown into the mountain come here there's gonna come a time when you gonna get thrown in the Nile River well what is October didn't stay with me watch this before he gets thrown in the Nile she builds a pitch but she builds a boat a small object and she insulates it with tar and pitch watch this because there came a moment when she could no longer hide him so now she's forced to throw him in the Nile which is what was the instructions of Pharaoh but watch this before she oh please don't miss this point before she threw him in the Nile she gave him something to float on don't just throw him and make sure when you throw him in he's got something he can float on what do you want to say to the black mother and even the father at this point make sure that one is time for you to throw that child into the Nile make sure you throw him in with something fake and photon you got to teach your travel use they can float home you got to give them skillsets they can float all you got afford them in education they can float on you got to so to get a trade that they can float on because the time will come when they got to go into the nile river but don't throw a man without giving them something they can float on how well are we preparing our children to float in the nile because watch this you're not ready for me what's this when you put that child in the nile and nothing left for you to do you gotta step back and pray and depend on the Providence of God to protect him in the Nile what's this do whatever you have to do to prepare your child but there will come a time when you gotta let them experience the Nile River and the parent that doesn't prepare the trial for the Nile will experience the drowning of that child what I am suggesting is we need to prepare our children to float when they get in that now River because in that now there's something that wants to kill you there are creatures in that now there are some things that will devour you in that night and you need to be careful because there will come a Nile River experience and black mother there will come a point when all you can do let's back away and pray that he'll float on what you prepared and at that moment the only thing you can do is pray to God to protect him in the Nile what are you suggesting my aim with young men I'm gonna experience the Nile River but give them something they can float on and then pray to God for their protection because sometimes and I'm worried about this do you not know sometimes our young men don't realize how important it is for them to get prepared for the Nile River and I wish that time to talk to my young men if they were here I would invite every young man on this stage right now there are young men right now playing with life you are playing with your you're playing with your future you're playing with your destiny you're not taking it seriously you know no use you don't realize at some point you going in the Nile and you better pay attention to what your mother is trying to build and what your father is trying to build because at some point you will be in a context where mom and dad can't reach you and that moment is gonna come when all mom and dad can do is pray when that black mother looks at the Nile River and she says God protect my baby cuz I did everything I could to teach him to float on something I tried to give him something to float on when he would get in his nile river experience i'm thinking about my own mother now that she knew she always told me they'll come a day when you gonna have to learn how to survive and my mother would do everything she could to make sure that when I got in the Nile River I had something to float on and she gave me every opportunity to learn how to be disciplined she gave me every opportunity to learn how to defend myself physically she gave me every opportunity to get educated she gave me every opportunity to learn ethics my mother had me listen let me tell my mama my mother had me in every conceivable extracurricular activity that had to do with self-development and forward movement I never had a summer where I could sit at home and do nothing you know what my mama was doing she was trying to give me something I could I could float on she wasn't I didn't want to go I didn't want to be a part of it I was trying to be lazy I said mom ain't got time for it mama says you're gonna get up out of that bad you gonna go down to that program you're gonna learn some skills you're gonna learn some talents you're gonna get educated I don't care school's out you're not gonna sit in the bed you know my son because at some point he's going in that Nile River and you gonna need something you can my mother said no tell you what you gonna do this summer you gonna be part of the National Guard I ain't trying to go to no military what'd you say about that you know what I need you to learn down there leadership Oh God I'm thinking back and it's amazing you know what I need you to learn when you go down there how to be a leader how to learn how to be disciplined enough to garner influence so people will want to follow you go down to the National Guard cadet program and I went down there learning somebody want to learn standing at attention right face that face but then what I didn't realize is the longer I was there my mother was putting me in a context to learn how to lead because at that national cadet program they put you over groups of people to see how well you can lead them through navigating situations I was only 16 years old in a navigating program and I'm in a program now where I'm trying to learn how to lead and my mother sent me there for six months six months what you're doing learn how to lead then another summer comes my mother said now go down to the YMCA and volunteer and let your presence be known so that you can gain some skills for work I don't know why I'm here are you going and you're not gonna get paid you're gonna volunteer you gonna find something around here that you can do as a matter of fact it's the summertime so I want you to be a volunteer counselor I don't wanna do that yeah but you're gonna do it what you're trying to teach me mama I'm trying to teach you that will come days when you got to get off the bed I'm trying to teach you I'm not gonna drive you I'm not driving your no I'm not driving my I need a ride to work no no no no get their figure out to get there there's a queue for bus at the corner it shows up at 6:45 a.m. jump on the queue for bus it'll take you down the hillside happen get off the bus and walk down to the YMCA and make sure you get there on time what you doing mama I'm trying to teach you how to float on something you all need some values and some ethics in your life I want you to go learn martial arts what you want me to learn martial arts for well if you want me to learn how to fight that's cool no it ain't about learning how to fight I want you to learn some about self-control and discipline hate about you learn how to hurt nobody I'll put you in there because I need you to learn something about self-control discipline I need you to know how to be disciplined enough to meet your destiny go to the martial art class my mother put me in something wet when I when she wanted me to learn some of my black history she put me in the African poetry theater now I'm gonna write African poetry theatre cuz she wants me to know something about my black history what I need to know that for because if you don't know where your people came from then you will value where I'm trying to take you what you doing mama I'm trying to give you something you can uh you can float on black mother I celebrate you today because many of your mother's many of you mothers listening right now we're like my mother you've done everything for your child to make sure that they can float in that not river and if that son is listening I want you to know something you better start taking life seriously because momma has tried her best to prepare you from what she can't always protect you from and you know what she's saying up like say what she staying up life at night thinking about momma is often thinking about did she do enough for you to survive did she do enough to invest in your future and mom was worried about you because she's hoping you have a direction because she's done everything she could to give you something and now you're the not River that mama has to stand back and all she can do is pray for God's providence and she gonna be all right so what I want you to do young man remember what mama taught you so you can float so you can float on what other folks around in mama wants you to learn how to float on what other folk ground and so she's trying to prepare you so that she can rest at night and saying my son is all right and for those of us in the churches I'll get rid of the clothes black mothers in the church church mothers as a village let's protect our sons like the midwives let's protect our sons because we're living in a time where the object of some people's wrath is your son they don't value his life they've already assumed he is up to something evil or something that is outside of the scope of moral behavior they have already assumed that he has a criminal disposition in DNA they've already assumed that his people are of that lineage of those who have historically done wrong they've already made assumptions about your son and those narratives are to give them license to take his life so I want you to know we need to prepare them Church what is my message to you my message to you is speak up and stop pretending like this stuff ain't happening because it can easily be your child and what am I saying to you black mothers and you black women that are coming along you young black women that are wanting to get married wonderful when you have a child could through this there might be a Moses in your womb there might be a Moses that you're about to give birth to you what I want you to do do with Jacque Abed dad I want you to protect your son and I want you to give him something he can float on because there will come a time when you gotta put him in the Nile River and when he's in that Nile oh you can do a step back pray and trust God's providence what's the strategy black mom all mothers for that matter plan for his future number one trust in God's providence protect him in his development three things black mom it is plan for his future protect him during his development trust it does Providence almost say it again plan for his future protect him in his development trust God's providence it is every black mom right now plan for his future son did you two do protect them during his development and trust God's providence and then gently back up and let him experience the Nile because at that point all you can do is trust God's providence that's my message for you I know that wasn't a traditional Mother's Day message but I'm concerned I'm concerned about where we are as a country I'm concerned about where we are as a church I'm concerned about Christians putting their head in the sand I'm concerned about social injustice and I'm concerned that we have not been bringing Christ to the crisis so let me pray right now I want to pray for every every black mother I'm playing for I'm praying for all mothers but I certainly want to pray for every black mom right now I want to pray for you right now I want to pray for every black son right now I want to pray about the Nile River right now I want to pray about what you are preparing your child to float on right now oh my god I tell you when I think back to my youth I didn't know what my mother was doing I just get it now I get it I get it I get it like I look back at mom like I get it like I just I didn't understand when I was growing up everything to me seemed like a fruitless exercise what I'm doing that for ain't got time for that for what no I don't want to do that I don't want to do this mom was trying to tell me son it's coming it's coming I'm trying to give you something to float on I want you right now to pray with me Father God in heaven we love you and what a great God you are father I've decided to preach this message because I'm concerned about every black mother I'm concerned about her mental stability I'm concerned about her resolve or strength and father we've come to celebrate her he celebrates all mothers but this morning we're focusing on her because we realize that she has such a difficult and father we actually give her strength they actually give her power they actually give her everything she needs as she tries to give her child something to float on Don we praying for that black son right now that young man who was getting ready or is in his Nile River we're praying God that she'll continue to take care of him because all we can do is trust your providence and father God we ask you for a special blessing upon these young men coming up that they will realize that they gotta learn how to survive and that mom and dad is doing everything they possibly can to teach them how to survive the Nile River father we pray that the values we teach them we pray that the lessons they learn will be sufficient for them to float on and then God we ask you to give us all peace in the midst of this crisis we pray we pray for all of the struggles that we're going through but we're praying for the our berry family that the mother will be comforted that the entire family will experience some level of comfort Madonn we also asks that you provide justice in a situation that has been so malignant we know how narratives get painted we we know how things go but father we actually to step in again for this is not our first time as a people down this road we know this will not be the last situation but father we ask you to show up in this context and we're praying that all of us will run with our very family that we will not just be non racist but we will be anti-racist which is such a part of your gospel message and we promise to give you all the honor and all of the glory in Jesus name Amen young son hug your mother today thank her for everything she's done for your life all the young children in the family wherever you are if you still have your mother you think of the day you let her know that her investment is much appreciated if you hear you want to be baptized for the remission of your sins and you're online please make that known we've had several baptisms during this pandemic and we think put it down for that so if you want to be baptized we want you to make that known and we will make arrangements for you to be here on this morning I'm gonna ask the song leaders to come forward at this time and we're gonna sing a song that hopefully will minister to your spirit and we'll close with this I don't know what y'all plan to sing but I almost want to tell you what the saying but I'm gonna I'm gonna trust the Providence of God in the Nile River as you sing what minister the people's pains today let's uh let's go ahead and get it yeah yeah yeah yeah praise Jesus [Music] yeah yeah show me [Music] yeah praise the mighty name of Jesus yeah [Music] down here down here Lord and we need yeah yeah show me show me the first person you called was mom cuz you know that not only does he have a listening ear but my mother will respond when I'm in trouble don't you remember you remember when you got in that trouble and you didn't know how he was going to get out but you knew mama was gonna figure it out for you mom has a way of disciplining you and not judging you she has a way of making sure that you learned the lesson but she always gave you hope that you can move forward beyond it Thank You black mom thank you do you know that your mother she saw the best in you when everybody saw the worst in you when folk thought you would never make nothing out of your life you know mama never gave up she kept praying about it she kept investing in you she kept saying it's gonna get better because I know there's something my son there's something my daughter there's something there and maybe nobody else can see it but I know God was something in him some of you remember in your younger years you was going down the wrong path my mama was patient enough to wait for you to make that turn folk gave up my mama said he gonna make that turn if my mother's watching right now she saw me have some of the worst grades in the world she didn't even know if I would graduate but she's good too got a son now that God is doctorate didn't know what would happen to him she waited for me to make the turn when everybody else thought I was gonna stay where I was thank you black mom thank you thank you for being that person that was the balance in the house you know how to kick the ballast while while daddy
