Matty vs. the Filipino Feast

almost there what is don't look before eating good good I'm so sorry yeah you know the way that I have a farm smells that it's like this like a hot farm in your mouth [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] I'm Matty Matheson and I'm a Winnipeg Manitoba you don't want to Winnipeg a lot of Filipinos there's 60,000 bees all over Winnipeg I'm gonna hang out with two really cool ones Ron and hot Ron these guys make amazing underneath side sausages I'll see chose do you like sweet sausages soda Filipinos they have the amazing restaurants serving amazing Filipino food we're gonna go fishing for some Goldeneye what's a gold I fish no idea I'm gonna be going to a poodle fight what's a poodle fight I don't know it Filipinos do though I'm gonna hang out we're gonna eat some food Manitoba Filipinos I'm here in the West End of Winnipeg I'm here to meet my man Ron who's gonna take me around show me all the amazing things that Filipinos God I'm here at jeepney it's the best Filipino food and Winnipeg chef smoked bones Phaedrus I've never had Filipino food before and what I've been told it's a mixture of Malay Spanish Chinese and even American cuisines this is a lot of food this is the first time I'm about to eat real authentic Filipino food and it happens to be in Winnipeg with Ron and a bunch of really cool people over that one table and in the Philippines with Charton the Chinese called usually killing me softly just because of all the fat mmm you can probably do it for all the sugar that we're gonna be eating - what we got planned what are we doing I'm gonna take you to a poodle fight brutal fight poodle friend the Subura fight it's a lot of food lots of Filipino food I'm not gonna get beat up no all right I get jumped into a Filipino game Phillipa Filipino food game oh boy Winnipeg's home to over 60,000 Filipinos relaxed immigration laws a surplus of work a built-in community Filipinos they keep coming one of these transplants is Ron's dad ha Ron the log and he's a king who moved here in the 1970s sorry with Filipino restaurants back in the Philippines immigrated here and has been cooking for friends family if you can tell we've got for me I'm excited I've heard so much about hot rod resample how are you hi how are you welcome to Winnipeg yeah yeah hear what you have to try I heard you got some sausage oh yeah of course we have no preservatives no MSG just pure natural myth why would you put any msg no he doesn't healthy eating he's hustling yeah rod is a hustler non-stop bounced out the sausage hustler well a healthy living healthy cooking and healthy eating so is this this is a very traditional Filipino sausage right yes and this can be served at breakfast at lunch at dinner or you can have a all day long than you sir this is like the most perfect breakfast sausage Jack let's go okay hot rod is lad we're doing it check this out this is like LAN doom buggies we're out here dune buggying in a pedal bike at Winnipeg but it defines a brisket or zeef brisket absolutely mmm so the good homies just made us up a feast Filipino flavors heightened and elevated I'm about to hit outside sit down on this crazy Filipino mat need this what do you think it's really tasty man it's salty it's it's it's sweet its braised you know like it's like hitting all the marks you know I'm glad you're enjoying it because there's a lot more Filipino food yeah Filipino food so far so good I've never gone river fishing ever in my life and no better place than Winnipeg on the Red River with my new filipino brothers see so it's like 8:00 in the morning I'm here with hot rod and Ron we're down a Red River we're about to go fish and hopefully catch some gold I hopefully catch some catfish I'm not really sure off camera hot rod was known about this kind of fetish that I think he wanted to facilitate a website for what was that quarter gourd calm anybody can have a goiter here comes that boat that's the boat okay I don't know how fish oh yes this part it sucks and the guys on the shore hate us we're gonna go a little bit further on gold I not so much we struck out on our first spot for gold I we're gonna move down the river closer to the gates so we're here by the law and all the pelicans seem to be feeding in these corners right where the water's coming off and they guys all the fishes coming up there try to catch some fish man it's tough [Music] I can't catch no they fish go I can pull up my book of excuses here I can give you a dozen of them Oh groaning we're not really catching too much but we're fishing so I'm gonna ask for Aude some really personal questions why is there so many Filipinos in Winnipeg Winnipeg us the center of fashion industry in the West Montreal Indies so they would be needed more garment workers you're gonna love it I'm gonna love it I hope so yes Maddie oh you're back at the bakery look at this I'm so good right here bakeries and look at this and see only from from Filipino bakery you can find a purple cake so it is a natural flavoring in the Philippines it's a purple root crop and it's used amongst a lot of desserts in Philippine food I like hmm oh my sweet move to the Book of Pi so this is yam and coconut might as well start using your hands are gonna be using it tonight yeah right that's our traditional way of eating mm-hmm you can find it only at jamel's oh yeah Jamel hmm that's perfect bye you guys peeping on this let's see what's happening here yeah Jimmy you're not a good you got a good ticket here we have a sweet dog it seems yeah your sausages are sweet your desserts are sweet these guys just like sleep though the bread is supposed to be our sweet you are three people this thing is crazy oh my god this thing's crazy this is like diabetes kind of meringue meringue cake weed not my knots and isn't it like you know like in a French restaurant or something like that for me this would be like a meal for you yeah oh yeah right yeah so this is like a meal for you but it's a Filipino meal for yes I love creme caramel like so does mal yeah get that drip get that drip shot yes TV loves Wow oh my dear yummy yummy isn't it that's crazy I want to come home I'll take well can we take him up I think I'll take them all I want to show off I want to show off to all my Filipino friends might as well bring the best Filipino pastries Mel's Mel's a babe Mel's hot I'm more excited about Mel than the pastries [Laughter] [Music] they're not ready me and now Jimmy's oh we got that new team [Music] so we're here in the north side of Winnipeg where a lot of the Filipinos live we're here at Ron's fiancees family's house is soon to be in-laws I came here early because I got to get my fire ready to cook a pie a outside we got some ginger it's a garlic we picked up some clams and some shrimps so I'm gonna find out exactly what a boodle fight is there's gonna be like 30 Filipino dudes here and women and families and people all together this table set up we're putting out banana leaves and we're gonna put all the food on the leaves and then everyone just kind of picks out with their hands already there's pork belly going there's some sautes they're roasting up some eggplants I'm really excited the whole house it's full of the women they're getting a lot of stuff going they just poured a bunch of 7up all over some shrimps nobody what not you what are you good doing right now what am i doing right now so I got the fish I took on the meat off the bones okay I got some nice beautiful catfish Wow olive oil some garlic some ginger so broad okay what's going on everyone's got the pot marinade what's what's up with that it didn't arrive system it yeah it helps also to balance the acidity yeah in this witness I love it okay hook it up real coconut coconut yeah yeah uncle a young coconut oh I heard it's finger Filipino where a young coconut got you you guys love sweet stuff everything's dessert you got sweet shrimps putting everything in pop Filipino food there's just different levels of desserts I quit desserts hard so I Filipinos real hard yeah we're good we're good I'm making like a sofrito so I'm gonna cook all these veggies down a lot and then I'll put my meat in and Brown my meat Wow look at that along with longer more long Ganesa I don't know if this is Filipino I'm using Filipino stuff doing Spanish by air but it's a brutal battle some real-life fusion back well this is gonna look epic a you put everything out on the table so that the world that do we will be on that side late lane by late the boodle file started with the military people it is a military way of earring and a special events when the President of the Philippines would visit the camp the military will have that model file so we're making circles of suit or food so that everybody that's gonna be standing at the table is within reach of every single dish that's being served all the food tonight already smells delicious and I just got a quick a pee outside so my life ain't too bad right now looks amazing [Music] look at that [Music] son [Music] [Applause] your vegetables or fish sauce or yep crispy shrimp paste and then obviously your paella [Music] so I came to lovely Winnipeg to hang out with Ron and see what the Filipino culture is in in Canada this is by far one of the most interesting dining experiences I've ever had and been a part of it was an amazing time here in Winnipeg shred it to all the filipinos worldwide I love you guys [Applause] [Music] you

Disappointed they spent so much time fishing and playing basketball and spending next to no time actually describing the dishes in detail/describing their tastes and textures. Especially the boodle fight, the last big shared meal although the climax, felt entirely glossed over.
